i spent so many years. perhaps even decades. dodging the weeb allegations. only to go to a japanese cuisine - centric culinary school. and to be taught the names of tools and ingredients in almost exclusively japanese. i’m going to have to go home and ask the person next to me to pass me my shamoji and nori and sumeshi so i can make kappamaki on my makisu. i’m fucking ruined

dear internet stop throwing pictures of beautifully toasted bagels slathered in cream cheese at me i don't have a toaster i don't have room in my teeny kitchenette for a toaster a toaster is a luxury here in japan as are bagels as is cream cheese
bagel places here that ask me "do you want that heated up" make me want to cry tears of joy even though all they mean is they're gonna stick the bagel in the microwave for ten seconds so it's slightly warm-ish but not enough to crisp up or melt the cream cheese a little

The amount of history I'm having to go back and check on for this story is getting wild
Like it's Mononoke, of course you're going to want to go and find the historical and cultural context of what's going on in a given story, but it's also like that stuff's usually more implied than explicit, without a fixed point to really say more than "this probably happened in this era here"
I'm not mad about it, one of the best parts of this series is how much stuff I've had an opportunity to learn about over the course of trying to make sense of it, it's more just that this one's a lot more grounded in a specific time and place and that's different
(I guess it would kinda have to be if it's drawing off the Kamehime myth, but even still the specificity is different)

I love the Dungeon Meshi anime so far but the english dub's Laios bothers me so much. The english VA on his own is good, but the interpretation of Laios as cool headed and nonchalant as opposed to serious and matter-of-fact really doesn't sit right with me...

i know it's probably because they wanted to keep the motif of (truth and) lies throughout and wanted to keep the wording consistent but i really feel kokichis "it was a lie" would've better translated with "just kidding" "i'm joking" in most cases. it sounds more natural and closer to his intentions imo.

it genuinely upsets me how much cant be translated from jp to eng. like pronouns specifically are soooo much more simplistic in english so theres so much nuance in how characters refer to themselves that gets lost bc we just say I

Speaking Of English In Japanese Media I was a little disappointed the Infinite Wealth trailer didn't have any characters speaking it </3 apparently there'll be stuff on having to navigate communication in America though it's fair enough that a number of major characters the gang has to interact with in Hawaii speak Japanese because It's Hawaii... but the English scripts and direction are always so goofy... I wanna see...
they're saving all the good english for the full game watch.... i know richardson gonna speak exclusively in english i know in my heart..
