Hi hi 🤩 (not on anon so I can say hi properly lol 💕) but - if you had to rank mass effect romances in order of least to most fave?
OOoog this is a fun one, but also hard because I've only had one full playthrough, and I romanced Kaidan then Garrus so it's hard to do it any other way lol. BUT I'll give my opinions based on what i've seen.
For the purpose of this i'm not including the one time flings or shorter relationships (like James' creepy hookup with femshep or Diana Allers because she's annoying asdjkan)
Garrus - nothing can top this man
Liara - i'm actually planning on romancing her in my current playthrough i'm starting, she seems like a good one
Tali - I love her so much it's a crime femshep can't date her.
Jack - i'm so mad at bioware for not making her bi, might have to play male shep for her
Thane - it's so tragic but god it seems good
Kaidan - I think he has a really good arc, if you romance him in all three it seems like a very sweet option
Garrus x Tali - Had to throw this in here because it seems so cute. might let it happen in the round where I don't romance garrus
Miranda - I think her relationship shows a lot of growth in her
Samantha Traynor - she's just so sweet I love her sm
Steve - he seems like such a good option!!
Ashley - ok we suddenly have a huge droppoff. I idk she just annoys me.
Jacob - the first time I played I was like 'damn he's hot' and posted the screencap here and I could tell by peoples reactions that was not a good idea. It sucks, because I think he had a lot of potential.
Kelly Chambers - idk she always annoyed me when I talked to her, haven't ever gotten the option for her to feed my fish

Mass Effect Tag
Tagged by @commander-krios & @actualanxiousswampwitch! 💕
I am a fan since: ...Um... Oh god I can’t remember when I first heard about Mass Effect and decided I want to play it. It was a while after the trilogy had been out though. Like Andromeda was the first Mass Effect game I was there for the launch of. 2016 I think is when I first started ME1.
Favorite game of the series: If we’re only going with the trilogy, then ME3. If we’re going off of the Mass Effect franchise, then Andromeda is my favorite hands down.
MShep or FShep: My main Shepard is a male Shepard but he’s actually genderqueer, using he/him pronouns. So technically mShep but also technically neither as majority of my Sheps are nonbinary iirc.
Earthborn, Colonist, or Spacer: Colonist
Biotics or Tech: I’m a sucker for magic and biotics are the closest we get to magic in ME so while I have characters that don’t have any biotics, biotics and their classes are my faves.
Paragon or renegade: Paragade! : D Why pick one when you can have both? LOL.
Favorite Class: In the trilogy it’s adept, though I excitedly can’t wait for either of my vanguards. If we’re counting Andromeda, then my favorite is the explorer profile because of the biotic blink effect it gives you asdfghjkl;
Favorite Companion: I uh - I’m very basic in the fact that I love and adore them all and who I pick is more based off of the Shepard I’m playing and who they’re drawn to. With my main Shepard, Duncan, I had a variety of different squads I’d take with me ‘cause his main romance was Steve so I didn’t have a love interest to take around. I did take Samara a lot iirc in ME2 ‘cause I did her “fling” with Dunc.
Least Favorite Companion: I don’t have any LOL. I love them all. :’D It’s actually very rare for me to dislike a companion in a game (tho I can def think of two, they’re not from Mass Effect LOL).
My Squad Selection: Depends on the Shepard and who I feel like bringing along. Like stated above, the most consistent I took with me I think was Samara a lot in ME2. In ME3, I took Garrus, James, and Kaidan with Dunc a lot for reasons specific to Duncan. It’d def vary from my other Shepards, who are lucky enough to date squadmates and bring their LIs are mission dates. :’)
Favorite in-game romance: My favorite for ME in general would be in Andromeda. I’ve only completed Steve’s romance - and Samara’s “fling” - in the trilogy so far and while both are very nice imo and I adore them (the pacing in Steve’s could’ve been written better but I can admit that and still enjoy it) I wouldn’t say either are my favorites. /:
Other pairings I like: I like any pairings so long as they’re not like Steve/femShep or Traynor/mShep. All the romances in the trilogy are nice and I think quite a few are underappreciated. Jacob/Shep (regardless of gender) could use more love imo. I know how his romance ends in ME3, but his romance in ME2 seems quite nice still to me and Dunc would’ve romanced him so fast if he’d been bi, gdi the chemistry. -clears throat- Don’t mind me, I’m just crying in a corner LOL.
Favorite NPC: Oh no I love so many. ;-;
Favorite Antagonist: As a character I actually quite like Kai Leng and the Illusive Man. As people, I don’t like them LOL but as characters they’re very fascinating and interesting to me.
Favorite Mission: I really liked the Leviathan mission, the one at the end in that ocean. Maybe it’s ‘cause Steve was actually in it quite a bit and Dunc had some new/feelsy scenes with his boyfriend LOL. I’m desperate for Shortez content, okay? ;-;
Favorite DLC: Citadel. I am bASIC LOL. I like how almost everyone shows up again (I say “almost everyone” ‘cause obvs Chakwas isn’t there and Kelly doesn’t make an appearance again) and it’s funny and goofy and parts of it were some of the few times I actually felt like I related to my Shepard more or he felt more real to me during that DLC? Idk how to explain it tbh.
Favorite Loyalty Mission: It’s been a while since I played ME2... I think Tali’s maybe???
Control, Synthesis, or Destroy: Destroy! The other options don’t really appeal to me however I find it fascinating that there are players they appeal to and I find that really cool. :3
Favorite Weapon: Sniper rifle. Unless I can count biotics LOL. I got Dunc’s weapon weight down so low in ME3 that his biotic powers’ cooldown was 100% lolol.
Favorite Place: ...A bad thing about Andromeda being the most recent game I’ve played, I only remember the locations in that one LOL. ^^”” The quarian (sp?) homeworld was nice iirc!
A quote I like:
“They rebuilt Mindoir... It wasn’t the same.” - Colonist!Shepard
“Someone needs my boot up their ass.” - Shepard
“Never do that again! ...Sir.” - Steve Cortez
“50,000 years and I still don’t get picked.” - Javik
And honestly any dialogue line from the Citadel DLC or the final mission in ME3 LOL.
Tagging: @bxtgrl and anyone else who wants to ‘cause I’m realizing idk how many of my mutuals play ME. o-o;;

A Land Not Mine - theprosefool, AO3
Link: Here!!
Rating: Explicit
Favorite Quote(s): I just, love this part so much???
Kaidan didn’t take his hand, but he smiled a relieved, worn sort of smile that added a crinkle to his eyes. “I’m glad to hear that, Shepard. I was....” He trailed off, cleared his throat.
“What?”
“I was worried you might feel like you... owe them. For bringing you back.” He looked down as he said it but his voice was firm.
"No," Shepard said easily. "I'm glad to be alive, I am--especially right now--but I didn't ask for this. Any of this. I don't owe them a damn thing."
This is how adults work children, they figure out “Oh, this person won’t back down on this subject that I also won’t back down on” and figure out a compromise or they move on until a later date. Some of y’all don’t know this and it shows.
And that was that. Shepard could tell he hadn’t entirely won Kaidan over to the idea of working with Cerberus, but Kaidan didn’t seem to have anything else to argue with. Neither of them was going to get what they wanted, so they put it away and moved on, finding no lack for conversation.
Gods how this must feel, the energy this must carry for two people to experience
Kaidan moaned against his mouth and thrust upward just a bit, but then he put his hands on Shepard’s hips to steady them both and tilted his head back to sever the kiss and look at him, eyes following the lines of scars once again. No words, just a look, his brow furrowed and his mouth a tight line despite the flush of arousal coloring his cheeks. He released his hold on one hip to touch the glow at his jaw with trembling fingers, and Shepard couldn't bare that look, not directed at him, so he closed his eyes and focussed on his touch instead. Kaidan traced that scar before moving on to another, and the trembling didn’t stop so Shepard made to distract them both, pressing forward and capturing Kaidan's lips again.
It’s almost painful in the best way possible
And that was another lie, really; as desperate as he was to stay at Kaidan’s side, he was headed back in the morning, back to his ship and his fight and his responsibilities. But it was the truth, too, somehow. Some part of him--every part of him that wasn’t Commander Shepard, Spectre, the parts that were just John, those parts would stay with Kaidan.
Smiles during sex are always a win, always, smiling and laughing is just, the best part of being With somebody else.
Kaidan must have felt his smile because now Shepard could feel his, and it left him light-headed and more than a little hard.
To know someone loves you as much as you love them, must truly be the greatest treasure in all the worlds
And maybe Kaidan wanted it just as bad as he did, for as long as he had. It felt like it, the way he touched him, greedy hands rolling hard over the muscles in Shepard’s back from the hem of his pants to the nape of his neck, the way he kept their bodies pressed close, never allowing Shepard more than an inch of distance. Not that he wanted even that.
CONSENT IS SEXY AND IT IS EASY. PERIOD. END OF STORY. NO ARGUMENTS ALOUD. (Except for the BDSM people in the back, cause y’all are better at consent even when it’s r*** play and honestly, it shows.)
He was desperate for more friction, but he wasn’t going to make the next push. He would eagerly receive and return with enthusiasm anything Kaidan offered him, but he would stop the second Kaidan hesitated. Tonight, it was Kaidan’s call.
I wonder if you can sense my gay longing the more I type
But before he could get a taste Kaidan leant down, capturing his mouth, and now all he could see was brown eyes, and that was good too, maybe better, because Kaidan was straddling his hips as they kissed,
Humor during any form of intimacy (fun fact, intimacy is My English Word that I cannot spell even though it’s my first language, we all have one, that, language and farenhehe) is important, and so is hoping for the absolute best (whatever that may be)
“I don’t, uh....” Kaidan lifted his head to look at him, a nervous smile creasing the skin around his eyes in a way that had Shepard’s heart in a clinch. “I don’t have....”
It took him a moment to grasp what Kaidan was talking about, distracted as he was by everything he could see and feel, but when comprehension dawned he had a nervous smile of his own. “M--my bag.”
Kaidan arched an eyebrow, that devilish smirk Shepard had seen so little of, and somehow it worked to calm his nerves--though not as much as the light kiss that followed. “High expectations, huh, John?” he chuckled when he pulled back.
“No. Just hopeful.”
DO YOU FEEL THE FUCKING LOVE RIGHT HERE???? BECAUSE I DO, AND NOW i’M SUFFERING FROM GAY LONGING 2.0
Shepard would never know, because Kaidan opted for taking his mouth rather than finishing the thought, but it was slow and sweet and so Kaidan that maybe Shepard knew exactly what he meant, because kissing like this felt a little like dying and a little like starting anew.
SAFE SEX IS IMPORTANT AND EASY FFS IT’S 2020
It took him longer than it should have but he found what he was looking for, a pack of condoms and a bottle of lube.
Words & Chapter(s): 30,443 words and 8 chapters
Pairing(s): Kaidan Alenko/Male Shepard (Whose name is John btw)
Summary: After being dead for two years, there’s only one person Shepard wants to see. So he writes a letter.
My summary: If I could tell you what this fic is about I’d say it is about Kaiden Alenko and John Sheppard falling so completely and irreversibly in love that it’s nearly painful to watch, or in this case, I suppose, to read
Score: 13 (I read it twice guys, me) ((Three times cause I lost half of this in an edit))  You have already left kudos here. :)
Warning(s): Shepard, and thus Kaiden, aren’t 100% sure Shep is Shep, which is fair.
Also, ME2 settings.
Mentions of Shepard dying, or rather, “dying”.
Really good lemon, you can tell when it’s going to start, basically a little after they start full-on making out. Also, I don’t mean really good as in “This got me really hot” but like “This made me Feel Emotions but In A Good Way”
Also, hope you don’t mind mid-coitus interruptions ;)
The collectors still arrive there
And so does the angst but not too much, like, Just the Right amount of angst
Minor OC character that you probably liked death
Mentions of painful injuries not gruesomely described though
Also, mentions of PTSD and Sheppard has a nightmare
Pros: This is actually my second read through, so obviously it’s good. Honestly, even if you don’t like this ship I’d still recommend it just for the story of it all.
I think my favorite part of this fic is that while there’s angst and “how do I know you’re you?” moments, it’s not needlessly dragged out to create a painful heaping pile of woeful angst. It’s a very realistic and accurate both to the characters themselves and real-life response, it’s very organic and every moment between them has this feeling of like, “Of course that happened next what else could you possibly have done there?” realism, like is Shep and Kaiden were actually real live people what else could you expect to happen but what you’re reading, if that makes any sense.
Also, I love how in love with each other they feel, how magnetic they are, how inevitable it seems, ya’know?
I just love this story and its author so freaking much, honestly, it’s just too sweet and calm and honest, even during the angsty moments it still feels good, ya’know?
But seriously, I love how close to the edge they are throughout this whole fic, how close to just, tipping over at the beginning there, it’s so, satisfying to watch and experience, and it’s amazing and filling and fulfilling and just. So. Fucking. Good.
I don’t know man, I just, really love the little ways that theprosefool gets across them being in love, or being close to it, or falling into it, like, the way this is written is just so perfectly good that I don’t even want to skip the lemon scene which is, kinda rare for me normally just for overall various reasons.
Cut from the part of the favorite lines because it grew too long to go there imo
“Smiles during sex are always a win, always, smiling and laughing is just, the best part of being With somebody else, even if it’s not sex, it’s so nice to have an intimate moment with someone and to see or feel or hear their smile, their laughs, and giggles, and chuckles, and snorts, and to just, feel how in love you are with them and in return how in love they are with you. Because, much like the song (and unlike the story, I promise they don’t break up no worries) even if you break up permanently and forever, it’s important to remember the good if at all possible. It’s important to remember that, even if y’all ain’t now, you were.
And that means something. “
Gods I’m so glad op didn’t use warmth or heat or something like that, it always jars me from the story, however they do use shaft
Tumblr media
But they also say dick instead of throbbing erection, member, manhood, etc. so it’s okay!
Aesthetic: But in all seriousness, the realism and humanity flowing like a gentle river through your hand in the form of words is just, so fucking refreshing. It’s like drinking lemonade in a Vegas summer, like playing with your friends the first day of fourth-grade recess, like holding hands with your girlfriend, like remembering your first kiss as a preteen, like being hugged by your friend during a panic attack, like laughing so hard you snort AND cry and lose your breath, it feels like looking at him and just, falling, it feels like jumping into the pool and making the biggest splash, like playing in the neighborhood streets, like being a kid, like remembering that homework you swore was the hardest and thinking back and realizing that just wasn't true, but also how proud you were to finish it.
Food Aesthetic: Vanilla ice cream cones during the summer, French hot chocolate during the winter, cheesy fries during fall, and fresh sweet plums during spring all while still holding their hand, and kissing their cheeks and nose and lips, and making a mess and laughing about it. Just, silly food moments that make you fall in love a little bit more.
Word Aesthetic because I can: Longing. (Obviously.)
Song Aesthetic: Wolf Alice - Don't Delete the Kisses (And the video and possibly the whole fucking playlist too) but the ending feels like this one Alanis Morissette - Hand In My Pocket oddly enough and maybe also, the innocent unwavering love of this song, and it’s music video Heartless Bastards - Only For You
Gif Aesthetic: Their relationship feel like this (disclaimer, they’re not girls, sadly... I should look for that👀)
Tumblr media
And this
Tumblr media
And this too
Tumblr media
But also, meanwhile, Sheppard and Kaiden @ Cerberus immediately and without hesitation at all times 25/∞

tbh when it comes to male characters the mass effect series always sort of disappointed about bi or gay representation considering they cut the option with kaidan and mshep in me1 and considering the mess andromeda was, too. (they should have known people will notice that sara ryder can date both male and female characters from the main squad whereas scott ryder first couldn't... until they "patched" it after being called out.)
see, my brother argued to hell and back with me about this very subject.  technically, we don’t really know if they simply ‘took it out’.  i want to point out that yes, the mechanics were there, but so were a lot of other unfinished things, as this was bio/ware’s first attempt into a shooter rpg.  and yes, the main voice files were there;  except, for the first game, meer had stated that at first, he was merely the placeholder voice for shepard.  it was only later in production that bio/ware hired him for the role, which explains why he’d read through the entire script.  as production continued, they had added hale.  playing the counterpart of m!shep, it was only natural she recorded the same lines as meer.
from this, one could argue that all of the main voice files were never meant to be there, as the other games do not have meer or hale reading all of what m/f!shep says.  i guess we’ll never truly know.  however, i do know this was before dr/agonage, the game that had made waves with m/m relationships in games.
as for andromeda… i can’t help but cradle my face when it comes to andromeda.  seeing my brother play his pre-ordered edition was saddening, to say the least.  the game needed dozens of patches, but that isn’t quite the point, you know?  it’s the industry and the community and the general bias towards f/f, because — haha — their consumers are usually of the male variety, so why not please the general straight male audience with fanservice, yes?  this is shit i see everywhere, shit i’ve seen all my life— and not just in games, either.  still, i wish it weren’t so.  even the thought of getting clumped together with everyone else just pisses me off.

Look, i don't want to cause any discourse but at the same time i'm really just tired of all this roundabout way of people telling anyone that their opinion is not valid. Bottom point is: wlw are tired of being always the last choice in absolutely everything, there's no such thing as using the 'So much for not labeling people by their sexuality' when used to discredit any complaint you don't agree on. [1]
Most game devs have this whole scripted thing where they code characters in a way to appeal to the broader public (coding them in a way that signalizes for poc and lgbt+ people that they've found someone like them, which is an actual useful skill in real life that keeps us safe) but when it comes to the time of executing it, they always backpedal real quick on the excuse of 'oh we don't want to be stereotypical' [2]which is a just semi-polite way of saying 'we don't actually care about you or any representation you may want but want to take your money anyway'. Right? that's bad. Jack was canonically in a poly relationship, but she was only ever available to M Shep to romance. By ME3 Kaidan could be romanced by M Shep, but Ashley couldn't be romanced by F Shep. And true: it's not on only one series of games, but it's a pattern none-the-less. [3]So the problem in no way was ever actually if Cora Harper was a Bi or Pan. it's the common exclusionary tactics that the media promotes that show that actual diversity in gender/sexual identity didn't ever factor in the actual making of the game. If Cora's Bi/Pan, we could (as we did in a large amount of all games to date) fall on the same problem: the devs declare that a character is Bi or Pan, they can never be romanced by anyone but the male protagonist. [4]And /that/ is the actual problem. Cora Harper could be Bi or Pan, and don't get me wrong, the large ammount of people posting about Cora('s hair in particular), are doing it in jest, but don't let it distract you from the fact that the way she talks/presents herself queercoded, and in the end the developers could decide to scrap it all. like they did with the Tali/F Shep romance, or the Jack/F Shep romance, or the Miranda/F Shep Romance, or the Ashley/F Shep Romance... [5]So! endpoint: Queer people are actually afraid to identify with Cora Harper (even being Queercoded and all), because we know that never stopped straight man making games. Also somewhat displeased that they made a whole show of saying the Ryder siblings would have the same screetime but they released the first long trailer with the the M Ryder, and had him kiss the only other human woman. It's quite simple in the end, we want to be equal, just that. From a longtime Bi follower [6]
I am biased and hurt and angry about the biphobia I see. It clouds my judgement. It makes me focus on the more extreme reactions in the fandom. But what you said - I understand that perfectly. I do. It has never been about doubting the fact that Bioware should be called out for this. I’m going to stop talking about it. It was a mistake to start discussing this again - I’ll make this about myself and my feelings, and it wouldn’t be right. But thank you for your messages.

Top five underrated NPCs!
I’m terribly sorry for this taking so long! I literally did not see this until like yesterday. O_o
Also, I ended up focusing on Obsidian/BioWare, because if I’d started thinking about every NPC ever in existence, you would never get an answer. :p
Anyway, here goes:
1. Bao-Dur (Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords)
I suppose I could name any KotOR 2 character that isn’t Atton or HK-47 when it comes to being underrated. But man. Bao-Dur.
You crash land on Telos and after gaining consciousness you immediately run into this kind of weird engineer guy who seems to know you and calls you ‘General’. General, you think. Yes, I was a General… And it all starts coming back to you.
I try not to spoil too much, but out of all the tragic, broken characters of KotOR 2 (and they all are, one way or another), Bao-Dur’s story and how it connects to the Exile’s is possibly the most fascinating and harrowing one. There is a weight on their shoulders only they can truly know and share and it creates a love and loyalty, a bond that is beautiful in its utter, profound twistedness. It’s not a romance. It’s not even a tragedy. It’s something more abstract, like… a dirge, perhaps.
That got weird and pretentiously poetic, but I can’t explain it better.
2. Haer’Dalis (Baldur’s Gate II: The Shadows of Amn)
I understand why he’s not more popular, in a way. The BG games had a metric fuckton of characters to choose from, and you could only have five at a time (not as your chosen team of the moment, but basically at all) in your party, and stuff like alignment and stats and general usefulness held more weight in choosing the party members.
And since Haer’Dalis is a) Chaotic Neutral, which is tricky unless you’re playing the same alignment b) a bard, which as a class is kind of like a useless combination of sorcerer and thief c) a so-called Glass Cannon -  terrific fighter who’s however out cold after a couple of punches d) kind of difficult to obtain - you have to save his pretty, pompous ass twice. Yeah. I understand.
But as a character? I frequently wonder who the hell even came up with him.A charming, blue-haired, entropy-loving hellspawn on a tournee with his plane-hopping theater group. Talks in riddles and rhymes, bestows avian-themed nicknames on his comrades, is confused by trees and literally laughs in the face of danger. Imagine Zevran from Dragon Age, but like 75% weirder (yes, both are also dual-wielding bi/pansexuals with pointy ears and facial markings, who will flirt with anything). He’s just… endlessly entertaining.
3. Ashley Williams (Mass Effect)
Ahh, Ash. I don’t actually know how unpopular she is in the fandom at large, but in the female-dominant Tumblr circles at least it’s exactly as you’d expect, and it’s not exactly helped by the fact the game literally forces you to choose between her and Kaidan (the sole male LI in ME1).
She’s not a perfect person or even a character, obviously, but don’t even try to tell me the flack she gets is not affected by the usual internalized misogyny running rampant in fandom. Or that things wouldn’t be very different if she and Kaidan were gender-swapped (I kind of think part of the problem is that they already exist in roles that are traditionally gendered differently, actually).
4. James Vega (Mass Effect)
This is partially on EA/BioWare for having so much of his background and characterization exist only in extended canon (for example, it gets barely more than a mention that he guarded Shepard for the six months of their incarceration, if even that?), but weirdly many just write him off as ‘human Krogan’, or ‘random generic tank with no personality’.
And I find that sad because I think Vega is one of the most interesting, layered and real characters in the entire series, and such a hoot as a part of the team if you take him along on the missions. I guess some have a problem with him calling femShep ‘Lola’- but if you tell him to stop that he 100% does, so I don’t even know. Also the friendship he can develop with Shep is nothing short of epic.
5. Wynne (Dragon Age)
I absolutely know why: she’s an older female character and therefore not a love interest or eye candy - and she even tells you she’s apprehensive about your relationship with your chosen LI.
A huge pity because she’s amazing, but what can you expect from a fandom that treats the games largely as a dating simulation - I mean, people game for their own reasons etc. but I’m always sorry for the writers for trying to do something interesting and different when it barely gets any attention or appreciation. Oh well.
