Inktober 2019
I don’t know how many people got to know about it, but the arson attack at Kyoto Animation claimed its 36th victim this October, thus I decided to use KyoAni’s main titles for my very first time taking part in Inktober. Here’s to hoping that this will serve as a small homage to whoever it was, whose passing won’t be as widely regarded as the previous ones.
All 31 illustrations in full size and their descriptions under the cut.
Basically a collection of very simple ink sketches made in a hurry. Some were drawn with KyoAni’s style, some with my own style and some were a blending of both. I don’t particularly like how grainy the scans turned out after being diminished because it makes them look like digital art instead of ink art, but it’s a fact that they were too big to fit in one post otherwise. Anyway, here goes nothing...
Tumblr media
Day 1: Ring Kuriyama Mirai (Kyoukai no Kanata) Pretty self-explanatory, and also the picshot that started this mini-project (yes, I took it with my phone). The others are all proper scans, though.
Tumblr media
Day 2: Mindless Akiyama Mio (K-On!) From the movie’s ending clip.
Tumblr media
Day 3: Bait Shinonome Nano and Hakase (Nichijou) Rock, paper, shark.
Tumblr media
Day 4: Freeze Asakura Ryouko (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu/Shoushitsu) “I will nullify your data link.”
Tumblr media
Day 5: Build Hidaka Yumemi (Munto) Connecting two worlds to create another.
Tumblr media
Day 6: Husky Matsuoka Rin (Free!) When your throat is screwed and you’re straight-up not having a good time.
Tumblr media
Day 7: Enchanted Kamio Misuzu and “Sora” (Air) Just your average dying girl and her bird not-boyfriend.
Tumblr media
Day 8: Frail Okazaki Nagisa and Okazaki Ushio (Clannad) “When winter arrives, she won’t be able to move anymore.”
Tumblr media
Day 9: Swing Tsukimiya Ayu and Misaka Shiori (Kanon) Based on official art.
Tumblr media
Day 10: Pattern Izumi Konata (Lucky Star) Cheer uniform, revisited. I was motivated to draw proper stars at first, but kinda got lazy halfway, lol.
Tumblr media
Day 11: Snow Nagato Yuki (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu/Shoushitsu) and Minase Nayuki (Kanon) From the movie and episode 23.
Tumblr media
Day 12: Dragon Tooru (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon) I mean, come on.
Tumblr media
Day 13: Ash Sagara Sousuke (Full Metal Panic) Always ready to blow shit up and watch the world burn. Me, a fool: What if I try to draw him in FMP’s old-school style? My utterly cursed hands: what are eyes
Tumblr media
Day 14: Overgrown Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu/Shoushitsu) Long hair version but without all the brooding.
Tumblr media
Day 15: Legend Okazaki Tomoya (Clannad) “Have you ever heard about the legend of this city? Whenever something fortunate happens, a glow of light appears.”
Tumblr media
Day 16: Wild Shindou Ayaka, Shindou Ai, Yakiimo (Kyoukai no Kanata) and “Sawatari Makoto” (Kanon) Two foxes, one cat and one ball of floof.
Tumblr media
Day 17: Ornament Chintanda Eru (Hyouka) “I’m here to show off.”
Tumblr media
Day 18: Misfit Ishida Shouya and Nishimiya Shouko (Koe no Katachi) “Ishida-kun is a bully, so you’re better off not getting involved with him.”
Tumblr media
Day 19: Sling Togashi Yuuta (Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!) “I don’t know anything about that.”
Tumblr media
Day 20: Tread Gilbert Bougainvillea (Violet Evergarden) “He had a charm that drew people to him, but he himself didn’t have much interest in others. He was a man who only ever thought about how he’d tread the pure-white path towards his own future that had been laid out to him.”
Tumblr media
Day 21: Treasure Violet Evergarden (Violet Evergarden) “It is the same color as Major’s eyes. I have always thought that they were ‘beautiful’. I did not know the word, which is why I had never said it. But Major’s eyes, from the moment we first met, were ‘beautiful’ to me.”
Tumblr media
Day 22: Ghost Nakahara Komugi (Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte) “So when you die, it’s like, ‘Okay, that’s all folks’, huh?”
Tumblr media
Day 23: Ancient Narumiya Minato and Takigawa Masaki (Tsurune) Yawatashi no Gi.
Tumblr media
Day 24: Dizzy Oumae Kumiko (Hibike! Euphonium) “You hadn’t been drinking anything at all, had you?”
Tumblr media
Day 25: Tasty Hazuki Nagisa (Free!) “It’s delicious. It’s filled with strawberry jam and marmalade, coated with chocolate and only costs 480 yen! So cheap!”
Tumblr media
Day 26: Dark Edward Jones (Violet Evergarden) “It’s not like I killed without thinking. I have lots of reasons. You got time to listen to all of them?”
Tumblr media
Day 27: Coat Enigma (Musaigen no Phantom World) Quite literal.
Tumblr media
Day 28: Ride Kunisaki Yukito (Air) “Where I’m going, you ask? Who knows? I wonder where. That’s right, you should try to ask Misuzu. She’ll be tagging along with me for a while.”
Tumblr media
Day 29: Injured Kanie Seiya (Amagi Brilliant Park) Having a rifle thrust at your face must hurt like a bitch and leave marks, and I just love that this isn’t addressed, like, ever.
Tumblr media
Day 30: Catch Kitashirakawa Tamako (Tamako Market) “Ah! My mistake! Throw one back!”
Tumblr media
Day 31: Ripe Momokawa Inako (Nijuu Seiki Denki Mokuroku) The next work in line, ready to receive the baton. I can’t wait to see you.

Tsurune Book 2 Afterword
Me before Tsurune: I will never translate those cliched isekais and otaku pandering web novels! I will only translate novels with originality!
Me after Tsurune: Mayhaps I should go check out Narou…
…Haha jk. But seriously translating Tsurune was a lot more trouble than I thought. I remember being lured in by those cute light novel images and foolishly thinking that it would be light and easy work…lmao past me was a dumbass. I don’t regret it though, though sometimes I did feel like giving up.
Personally, I thought the author improved a lot in the second novel. There was more focus on characterization and motivation and less on all the kyudo stuff. And of course my salty boy Nikaidou, who I thought was the senpai with target panic Minato mentioned in book 1 for the longest time. Though the ending still relied on that whole “random revelation from nowhere to make a heartwarming ending” from the first book. Second book was a lot more enjoyable for me to translate than the first one.
Even though I think more novels are unlikely, you never know. Personally I would love to see a Masa-san prequel, mostly because I just want to know what his old last name was and what happened to his biological father haha. A Kirisaki Middle School prequel would be cool too (with special appearance from Nikaidou-senpai please). Or Tsujimine prequel with Nikaidou. Just more Nikaidou. And of course, a sequel where a sixth boy joins and adds drama to the club, or even a spinoff with the girls who are so underused!
Anyways, thanks to everyone who liked, replied, and reblogged my translations. I know I don’t really answer people a lot on here but it makes me happy to see people’s comments. And thanks to Kyoto Animation for making the novels possible and creating the anime. With all that has happened in the summer, it really shows the importance of supporting creators and the power of art. If you can, please support them by buying merchandise from their online shop or even just streaming their anime on a legal platform.

Translation Notes
1. In the first edition of the novel, which I have, it was April 2018, but according to this announcement from the website, it’s March 2018. I did some searching around and discovered this magazine (高校弓道マガジン) is a free magazine distributed to kyudo clubs in Japan by the kyudo division of the National High School Athletic Federation, which means I probably will never find it. Unless one of you guys happen to know someone… (please hmu if you ever manage to get your hands on one)

A mail-in interview with Ayano Kotoko is set to be published in the eighth issue of High School Kyudo Magazine for March 2018. (1) If you have the chance, please take a look at it.
Now, every year I draw a fortune at my New Year’s shrine visit, and I got “excellent luck” for three years in a row. The fortune I had ever drawn was terrible luck and that had a big impact on me, so I feel like it all evened out with this. And so, I share this happy news with you. Tsurune is being adapted into an anime.
For Book 2, I wrote to link the emotions of the characters with the theme of “Run, yagoe. Today’s a day of beginnings” and the teachings of “one shot and expire” and ikiai. Tsurune is a story about teachers and students as well as bow friends, and also, as I was aware that it would be animated, there are many depictions of movements and actions that are not written about much in a regular novel. I am looking forward to people saying, “Oh, so that’s what they do in kyudo” when seeing footage of scenes that are hard to understand with only written words, so I hope you will wait for the day it debuts with me.
To those who cooperated with the interviews, thank you all very much for allowing me to receive valuable experience. I am much obliged to my editor T-sama. I really loved the rough sketches drawn by the character designer, Morimoto Chinatsu-sama, and so the scene with Kaito being followed about by cats was born. To everyone at Kyoto Animation and Animation Do who were responsible for the insert illustrations, thank you all for the wonderful illustrations. To those who used Kyoto Animation’s email form to send their thoughts on Book 1 and wishes for an anime adaptation, it was especially I who was cheered up. To my beloved teachers and senpai at the dojo, my precious friends, my supportive family, thank you all very much.
Finally, I would like to give the biggest thanks to the readers who read to all the way here.
I pray for the day when the beautiful tsurune of archers will sound.
