SCENE ONE
Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, 7:32 am, April 8th, 2021
“I am very disappointed in most of you.” A middle aged woman, maybe 52 (no one really knows), stood at her desk at the front of the class, a frown creating more wrinkles on her already wrinkly face. “You guys are an English class, you should know that—“ The door was slammed open, a familiar short blonde girl at the doorway, putting the door back on its hinges. “Ms. Jazzarye, I am so glad you came when you did, I just got done with scolding your classmates.”
“Oh, uh,“ Poor Madaline had spent hours reading the entries to the journal and wrote positive notes on them. Hence why she was late to Ms. Fran’s class. “I think Gwendolyn’s entry was more focused on the way animals were treated and the physiological reason, and Hunter’s was masculinity and the toxicity of it.”
“Really?” Ms. Fran started to relax, taking the notes from Madaline’s outstretched hand. “Fine, I will review these later on.” The class sighed in relief. “And as I promised, today is Study Hall, use your time wisely.”
Madaline sat at her desk, immediately getting bombarded with her classmates.
“Thanks, Jazzarye-san! You’re a lifesaver.”
“We are so lucky to have you!”
“Man, we almost got in trouble!”
“Don’t worry about it guys, I knew she would be scolding you guys because she didn’t post last night.” Madaline smiled nervously, waving off their kind comments.
“Alright, guys, stop crowding her.” Akaashi, a friend in her class, pushed them away, giving her her breathing room.
“Thank you, Akaashi.” The blonde sighed in relief, getting her Calculus work out.
“You were uncomfortable.” The calm male smiled softly, sitting in his seat next to her. “Do you need any help with math?”
“Yeah.” Madaline looked defeated as she pointed at the last few questions.
“Well, you had the right idea.” Akaashi chuckled at the excited look she got. “But, you have to remember the steps.”
“Right.” She nodded along as he explained, the amused, calculating, and interested looks he sent her going unnoticed. “Ohhh! The numbers go on the other side!”
“There you go.” It’s moments like these I forget she’s an ex-detective.
“Hey, where’s Yaku?” Her green eyes scanned for the light brunette.
“He got a headache again.” The black haired male sighed, shaking his head.
“Ah, jeez, I told him to go to sleep early.” She puffed her cheeks out in a pout.
“You know him, always working.”
“Still, he should know his limits.”
“I’ll tell him you said that.” The duo laughed.
Before they could say anything else, the principal’s voice came over the intercom. “All students and staff please report to the auditorium, now. I repeat, all students and staff to the auditorium.”
A confused and concerned aura washed over the class, maybe even the whole school as everyone packed up and left. The halls were swarmed by fellow peers and a few adults passing by, and there was no indication that they would be stopping at any time soon. Madaline stepped closer to Akaashi, considering she doesn’t like crowds, and held his hand with both of her own. He noticed her unease, and squeezed her hands softly as they got into the auditorium, only to squeeze harder when seeing she got even more nervous upon seeing who was on the stage. The head detective of the Miyagi Detective Agency, Terrence.
“For those of you who don’t know me, I am Detective Terrence Falcon of the Miyagi Detective Agency.” The old man spoke once he was given the go ahead. “As many of you may know, a dumpster with human ashes was set on fire, we are currently trying to find the culprit and advise you to stay inside or travel in pairs or more.” He bowed. “On behalf of the agency, I would like to thank you for your time and patience, everyone will be dismissed from class early.”
As everyone filed out, two people remained, one looking at an absolutely livid girl next to him. Her usually light green eyes with amber rims were a dark forest green and a deep frown was on her usually happy face.
Letting go of Akaashi’s hand, Madaline strode down towards the man with her head held high. “The hell are you doing here?”
“Protecting the prefecture? What else?” Terrence raised a grey eyebrow.
“You know the rules, your boss said not to meddle with schools or anything of the sort unless absolutely necessary.” The blonde hissed.
“Well, that rule was changed a while ago. Now, no one is allowed to kill without a license and a reason, thus this is a problem.” His apathetic eyes looked away and he walked off.
“Madaline, come on.” Akaashi tugged on her hand, worried.
“I hate detectives.” She grumbled as they walked to the cafe. “Pompous assholes.”
“They’re doing their job.” The black haired male smiled.
“They don’t have to act like they’re on top of the world though.” Annoyance floated in her eyes, a scowl on her face. That until she was poked in the side, making her giggle.
“I hate it when you’re mad, you’re so pretty, don’t waste all that beauty on being petty.” He smiled, opening the door for her. It took a minute to realize what he said, and she was on the ground, blushing like a madwoman.
“There she goes, what did you say?” Jupiter laughed.
“The truth.” Akaashi said simply, shrugging.
“That doesn’t answer my--. You know what, nevermind.” They shook their head, helping Madaline up. To their shock, and amusement, she puffed out her cheeks to calm down, and it surprisingly worked. She speed walked into the kitchen to start making an apple, lavender, and ginger tea, pouting as she did so. Soon, the trio were chilling out together as she whisked around chefs to make the tea for Yaku.
“I’m just saying, if Ian wanted to, he could light his house on fire just by walking into the kitchen.” Jupiter took a sip of their beer like they were sipping tea.
“Okay, I think it’s time for us to go.” Madaline laughed, leaving with a hug, handing Akaashi a thermos once they were outside. “Tell, Yaku if it’s too cold, to warm it up in a pot, not the microwave.”
“Got it.” And with the tea in his hand and a goodbye hug, the duo separated, the gunmetal blue eyed pretty boy going left, and the short girl going right, towards the college.
