Breath testing is a non-invasive way of diagnosing a number of metabolic disorders by just analyzing the presence of various gases in a patient’s breath. Hydrogen breath tests are quite commonly used to investigate the pathophysiology of metabolic gastrointestinal (GI) ailments. Major disorders that can be detected through hydrogen breath tests are small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and carbohydrate malabsorption.

Mystic Messenger
Jumin Han x Reader
tw: suicidal thoughts
Tumblr media
You stare at the hand holding a glass of bourbon. There's no feeling—not in your knuckles, not in your fingertips, not on your skin. A resounding crack comes from the glass as it shatters in your unforgiving grip. Liquor, shards, blood, it all seeps through your fist and onto your pants.
"Darling, is everything alright?" Jumin's voice lilts like a godsend from the hallway. It falls on ears that can't really hear.
Jumin's footsteps enter the room at a steady pace, not aware of the situation yet.
You can't feel the air in your lungs. It's hard to breathe.
"I thought I heard a..." He petters off as his eyes search you quickly—you can see his thoughts kicking into high speed, analyzing everything.
Words form at the back of your throat but your voice catches and lumps in a mottled swell. There's nothing to say. You tightly clench what remains of your glass.
And then suddenly Jumin is there, kneeling before you, face stern and eyes furious. He unwinds the tension in your hand, scolding you for your carelessness. His grasp is tender though, and as he carefully removes sharp splinter after splinter, you can't help but smile.
Ah.
When you're gone will he find someone else to scold, to mother hen over? There are so many others to fall in love with during the span of eleven days. You were no one special. The faint taste of burning alcohol runs down the back of your throat. You can feel a sob tearing a hole through your chest.
"Where does it hurt, my love?" He's oh so gentle and any bite that had been in his tone is all but gone.
It hurts everywhere, you want to say. It hurts knowing that it'll be okay without me.
Instead, you must've started crying.
Jumin looks absolutely devastated. He runs quickly to the restroom only to return with a first aid kit. Cautious and worried, he runs iodine and hydrogen peroxide over the wounds. The blood and skin fizz. He neatly wraps gauze around your hand, his care as light as if you are the finest china.
"We're just going to patch you up then we'll get you to the hospital." Jumin says softly. "You're going to be okay, darling."
You don't hold your breath. The treatment that you know should be a blazing staunch pain feels like nothing more than a pinch. You still can't breathe.
"Just wait here." Jumin kisses your forehead and it feels like the softest touch on Earth. You envy whoever will hold his heart next. "I'm going to call Saeyoung or Zen. Either of them will be faster than Driver Kim at this point."
He leaves the room in a flurry. It's rare to see him this flustered or out of sorts. You did that to him.
Once he's gone you stare down at the floor. All it would take is one little scoop, and then you could swallow whatever remained of the broken glass. It'd be over then.
But for some reason, you think of Jumin.
He'd be fine without you. Really. A man with the world available at his fingers, he wouldn't be hard pressed to find another partner. And yet, it is Jumin who came in at the slightest sound, it is Jumin who scolded you, and it is Jumin who disinfected and bandaged your wound. It is all Jumin.
You don't reach down to eat the glass.
"Jumin?" You cry out, your voice raw and tired and scared. The air comes rushing into your lungs all at once and you find yourself gasping at the ring of his name.

A Pudgy Planetary Pitstop
When a motley crew of heros from the vastness of space land on a new planet that seems to be made of edible earth, they might a bite off more (or in their case, much MUCH more) than they can chew.
CW Weight Gain, Unintentional growth, Feederism, belching
In the inky void of space, we come across our crew in a shabby state. Jax lazily bats the navigation, eager for a change on the screen, his tail flicking from side to side in annoyance and disappointment. BB sighs heavily "Do you have eyes on the planet?" "Negative captain," the feline replies, his paw yet again tapping against the screen. Their third crew member is in the vents, moving from place to place to keep an eye that all of their tanks are filled and the wires are in the right place. He takes a wrench and tightens a nut and bolt or two but reluctantly joins the others. "Everything seems to be in tip top shape, Cap. If you don't mind me asking, how much longer til we reach our destination?" Captain BB does not respond, gazing into the emptiness, wishing on the comet that passes by the ship that the answer will be soon.
As if by coincidence, a blip goes off the ships scanners. The idle eyes of Jax flip towards the screen in excitement. "50,000 kilometers and counting, captian. We're almost there!" And lo, the planet begins to grow in their vision, as their auto thrusters engage, readying them for a landing. By 40,000 all the crew are out of their seats and by 30 they're working on their suits. At 20 they finish putting them on and by 10 they gather their materials. The ships computer enters auto pilot and gradually slows the ship to the ground which lands with a thud.
The door hatch opens with a hiss and the crew steps out onto their strange new world. Captain BB takes a fearless foot forward leaving a boot print in the alien soil. "Well boys," he says, a grin in his voice "we made it to Ad1-pr0-53!" The crew gives a slight cheer at the accomplishment of their task and split up to begin setting up their trackers and mobiles. Jax gathers some soil samples while Douglas readies the probes and BB goes inside the ship to ready some food (because after such a long flight, he was huuuuungry). Time flies quickly and the crew manages to make it back inside. Chewing on some space cream, the crew watch as the computer begins to analyze the samples. With bated breath all are silent as it speaks.
"The soil contains 89% carbon, 7% oxygen, 3% hydrogen, and 1% nitrogen. This soil is: suitable for consumption." Jax frowns, puzzled for a second. "I set it to detecting if we could put seeds here, not if it was EDIBLE." Jax continues to hit buttons, going through the readings. "Apparently it tastes like...gingerbread?" The crew all look at each other, having had spend decades in cryostasis without something even close to solid or sweet and each take a slight piece from it and bite down. A flavorful waterfall cascades down their tounges as wave after wave of delicate sweetness bombards their brains and bodies with pure ecstasy. In that moment, the crew knew that they had landed on something really special and needed a form of testing a computer could not comprehend: taste testing.
Ignoring the warning signs from their computer, the crew burst out of the ship hungrily grabbing at the ground. Jax filled paw after paw in his maw, greedily gorging on gingerbread ground and gravel. Douglas sped quickly to a pond of butterscotch and drinking like it were air. The captain wasted no time heading for the peppermint poppies and porkishly pilfering every peice in his mouth.
Unbeknownst to our soon-to-be hefty heros, the computer was unable to tell them that the caloric value of the planet was 10 times as strong as that on earth. So what mightve been a simple binge would become something more. Jaxs slender sides began to slowly swell, turning from skinny to average to chunky. The butterscotch lake ballooned Douglas, his belly bloating and building bigger and bigger. And BB would live up to his title, his pecs from perky would sag as pudge is added to his frame. The cat began to notice the pudge when his crouch became harder to maintain with a belly in the way. At this point, however, he ignored his instincts and continued to ravage the earth, his belly brushing the ground as pound after pound piled on. Bigger and bigger he grew from 150 to 200 and 230 and 240. The butterscotch was not much better as blubber became bigger and bouncier as Douglas' endless gluttony took over filling his mouth with delicious sweetness, struggling to reach with a new chin that graced his face. The captain landed with a thud next to the tree, now nearly twice his size and, while grimacing, stabbing a spigot to the tree and sucking the sticky sap from its spout, his ass growing and growing with every gulp.
The porkish protagonists became unrecognizable, a hole filled with fur as Jax's suit failed to contain the fattening feline, the shoreline thinner and thinner as Douglas grew thicker and thicker, and the trees tuckered out as the captains calories soared by thousands on thousands.
Soon our hapless heros began to grow full, in a haze from their gratuitous gluttony, bellies nigh bursting, bellowing belches on belches in a cacophonous calorific chorus. Jax struggled to his side, rubbing his round stomach, barely cognizant of his binge. Douglas too needed a breather (and a belch) as butterscotch brewed in his belly slowly but surely turning to fat. And our captain nearly blew up, his stomach taut as a balloon, unable to breathe without popping.
Slowly but surely our heros would find rest on this planet and wake up hours later, hundreds of pounds heavier and ever hungrier for another stuffing session that'd rival a black hole.

Humans on Mars will need oxygen, and Mars’ atmosphere is pretty anemic when it comes to the life-sustaining element. NASA’s Perseverance rover successfully extracted oxygen from CO2 in Mars’ atmosphere, but there are other ways to acquire it. There seem to be vast amounts of water buried under the Martian surface, and oxygen in the water is just waiting to be set free from its bonds with hydrogen. On Earth, that’s no problem. Just run an electrical current through water, and you get oxygen. But Mars won’t give up its oxygen so easily. NASA’s Perseverance rover extracted oxygen from CO2 in Mars’ atmosphere, another first for the mission. It was an exciting achievement since future human visitors to Mars will need it to breathe and to create rocket fuel. But a team of Chinese scientists are developing a different approach. They’ve shared their results in a paper titled “Automated synthesis of oxygen-producing catalysts from Martian meteorites by a robotic AI chemist.” It’s published in Nature Synthesis, and the lead authors are from the Key Laboratory of Precision and Intelligent Chemistry at the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China. “Oxygen supply must be the top priority for any human activity on Mars because rocket propellants and life support systems consume substantial amounts of oxygen, which cannot be replenished from the Martian atmosphere,” the authors write. (NASA scientists might disagree with that statement.) Instead, Chinese researchers think that solar energy can be used to produce oxygen from Martian water. But it won’t be the simple electrolysis from science class. Instead, they intend to employ catalysts. Simple electrolysis involves running an electric current through water to produce oxygen and hydrogen. Image Credit: By © Nevit Dilmen, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10959462 Simple electrolysis faces barriers that limit its potential and productivity. The oxygen evolution reaction is a bottleneck in electrolysis, and scientists sometimes call electrolysis “sluggish.” On Earth, scientists know which catalysts can overcome the bottleneck. But conditions are different on Mars than they are on Earth. Scientists can’t just transpose methods that work on Earth onto Mars. The trick is finding the appropriate catalysts available on Mars. Scientists call them oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Here’s the problem: there are over three million possible catalysts on Mars. How can scientists work through all those possibilities when the communication delay between Mars and Earth can be up to 20 minutes long? It’s not practical. This is another situation where robotics and AI can solve a problem, according to the research team. “Here we demonstrate a robotic artificial-intelligence chemist for automated synthesis and intelligent optimization of catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction from Martian meteorites,” the researchers explain. “The entire process, including Martian ore pretreatment, catalyst synthesis, characterization, testing and, most importantly, the search for the optimal catalyst formula, is performed without human intervention.” China doesn’t have a functioning spacecraft on Mars that can do some of this work. Fortunately, nature has delivered samples of Mars to Earth in the form of meteorites. The researchers used small amounts of five types of Martian meteorites as feedstock in their automated system. This simple schematic from the research outlines the robotic, AI-driven system. Samples of Martian meteorites are analyzed for potential catalysts. The system then synthesizes catalysts, optimizes them and tests them. The system searches for the optimal catalyst, all without human operators. Image Credit: Zhu et al. 2023. To illustrate how effective this fully automated, robotic AI system is, the researchers calculated how long it would take for humans to complete the same tasks using typical ‘trial and error’ methods. The trial and error method is difficult because of what researchers call chemical space or material space. There are a confounding number of variables that need to be tested, and they occupy an enormous chemical space. “Designing a catalyst from a given list of elements requires the exploration of a vast chemical space,” the researchers explain, “which poses a daunting task using the conventional ‘trial-and-error’ paradigm.” With the five Martian meteorites as feedstocks, there are an estimated 3,764,376 potential catalysts. That creates lifetimes of work for human scientists. “Finding the optimal formula would require 2,000?years of human labour to finish such a screening, where each complete experiment takes 5?hours, at least,” the researchers write. Robotic chemistry has made serious advances in recent years, something the researchers say can be leveraged for use on Mars. They point to research by Cooper et al. in 2020. In that effort, a team of researchers used a mobile robot to tackle the chemical space and search for improved photocatalysts for hydrogen production from water. “The robot operated autonomously over eight days, performing 688 experiments within a ten-variable experimental space,” Cooper and his colleagues wrote in 2020. That’s 86 experiments per day. With this new research, which the researchers call a ‘proof of concept study,’ the trend for robotic/AI chemistry takes another step. It started with the AI. “Within six weeks, the AI chemist built a predictive model by learning from nearly 30,000 theoretical datasets and 243 experimental datasets,” the researchers explain. Eventually, the system delivered an exceptional catalyst made up of several metals. The material catalyzed the oxygen evolution reaction—the bottleneck in the electrolysis of oxygen from water—for 550,000 seconds (about 153 hours.) Furthermore, the catalyst was effective at -37 C, a typical surface temperature on Mars. This schematic shows the robotic/AI system in greater detail. LIBS stands for Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy. LIBS produces a small amount of plasma on the surface of the sample that aids study. While complex, simple electrolysis is still the heart of the system. Image Credit: Zhu et al. 2023. “Our study provides a demonstration that an advanced AI chemist can, without human intervention, synthesize OER catalysts on Mars from local ores,” the authors claim. This is an impressive development. The fact that it’s all done in situ is also compelling. “The established protocol and system, which are generic and adaptive, are expected to advance automated material discovery and synthesis of chemicals for the occupation and exploration of extraterrestrial planets,” they conclude. But what’s next? This map of buried water ice on Mars was made with data from three orbiters. The colours show how deep the ice is buried, with black regions being so soft a spacecraft would sink into the ground. The white polygon shows the ideal region where astronauts would be able to just dig up ice with a shovel. Image Credit: By NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASU – https://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpeg/PIA23514.jpg, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=84799085 China’s next mission to Mars could be a sample return endeavour, according to the China National Space Administration. That mission will be Tianwen 3, the third in the Tianwen line, and China hopes to beat NASA/ESA to the punch by returning a sample to Earth in 2031. It seems unlikely that China can also shoehorn a robotic/AI chemistry experiment into a sample return mission, but you never know. The CNSA is ambitious and eager to measure up to NASA’s record of success. If they can, it’ll be an extremely impressive feat and a big leap forward in Mars exploration. The post A Robotic Chemist Could Whip up the Perfect Batch of Oxygen on Mars appeared first on Universe Today.

Fernando Pessoa’s The Complete Works of Alberto Caeiro Bilingual Edition Review
Tumblr media
I started with Fernando Pessoa’s The Complete Works of Alberto Caeiro Bilingual Edition. His pseudonyms were not just that they were actual characters, OC’s, apart from him with different thoughts & believes. He gave them dates of births and lives then wrote as them. He had like two trunks and 30k papers found that is still being delved through with over 70 characters he did this with. His main character and most prolific is the one I started with.
I found myself more intellectually moved than emotionally. And it led me to wonder if Caeiro’s poetry any less because he is a fictious character of Pessoa’s imagination. Are the emotions a flat facsimile. They are pretty in their own way. And expertly tailored for the character. But a character he was.
Yet do I not feel with a fictional character in a novel as I walk alongside during their trials in magical or mundane worlds. So why did I not find myself falling into this characters head but instead intellectualizing, analyzing what it says about the Pessoa instead.
This character is no less than one in a novel, except his world is viewed through the poetry he writes as he experiences. Maybe it is because I could not see the experiences that begat the poetry as I see the experiences in a novel.
And yet I don’t see the experiences of any poet that have breathed & I still become wrapped around their words instead of intentions. I think all of our characters have pieces of us in them & Caeiro’s character is so wrapped around the state of nothing as only someone whose head is intimately entangled in chaos & wishes for simplicity could write him.
If you write a song about something you experienced it is all you. If you write a poem about something you experienced it is all you. If you write a character who writes a poem on his experience experiencing how much is it you. In parts I think he created this character then deemed this creation his poetical master because this is who he wanted to learn to be. To see without searching. To look without wondering. To be. Yet the marvels he would not have created were his head not so full he had to create to empty it.
Caeiro fictional work of art obsessed with everything being nothingness fell in love in the middle of this book. His poetry have become ode to the state of feeling for this other fictional character. And this is was interesting because if love is anything it is everything. You can’t bring the state of nothing to something that is everything. And a transformation we did start to see but then intriguing as it was Caeiro’s the keeper of the sheep portion has finished. It seemed by the end of it he was starting to find the everything in nothing. Don’t you just love a good growth arc. It does make you wonder if he Pessoa made Caeiro fall in love because he himself was similarly was and wanted to explore it or because he hadn’t and still wanted to explore it.
In the uncollected poems portion I found if Caeiro were real and not a carefully constructed fictional entity I would likely find him rather annoying with his perpetual condemnation of poets who personify everything. As is I found him fascinating. Like an interesting lab experiment.
There is a wonder if Caeiro while fictional does in fact exist and by that I mean his way of thinking. To see just with eyes and there be no meaning in anything, no significance. And in a world where anything could be it must be. But it is foreign to me whose mind sees in duality. I can look at the stars and know they are hydrogen & helium & gravity. But I can also look at the stars and wonder if they yearned until the yearning burned so hot they consumed everything to travel eons and fall upon the earth until they grew lungs to breathe with and feet to dance with and lips to melt onto another’s.
I see the stars & I see the stars & I know their heat can mean life. But I see the stars & I see the stars & I know their heat must mean life. That the ichor in my veins comes from the very core of them. So if I can yearn w/ such intensity it must be their remanent that allows it. Because when I see one thing I don’t just see one thing. I see a thousand possibilities alongside it. Everything it is, along with everything it could be, and everything it might be, and everything it would be. And my brain is never just seeing to just see. A flower is not just a flower. It is a scent, it is a taste, it is a longing, it is a memory, it is a possibility, it is a remanent, it is kin to the me that blooms when watered and wilts in droughts and came from the earth, it is a tapestry, and a dozen other things. And so is everything else I lay eyes on. But it must be peaceful to see and just see the input from your eyes to your brain and your brain to your eyes and a thousand possibilities never springing like wildflowers unbidden.
By the Interviews section I was sure the Ego Pessoa gave him is as big as the earth Caeiro proclaims to not see with anything but his eyes. I have wondered since reading this Caeiro’s complete works if I have ever seen just to see. I have lived my life in many different state of minds. If it were possible I’d have earned a doctorate in ennui before I left high school. And still even when seeing was a blur I could not see just to see.
And I look at my computer screen in contemplation trying to emulate a foreign frame of mind. A computer is a computer, Caeiro would say. And yes a computer is a computer but my brain connects constellations and manifests Hermes. Humanity’s perpetually attempting to pull the Gods to the mortal world. Quintessential messenger, mischievous and clever as the hands that fall on its keyboard. Humans go to it sometimes as an emissary, sometimes in hopes for luck in trade and wealth, and in it lays the Tower of Babel connecting us all. And as I am more awake than I have ever been before in my life I wonder why I would want to see just to see when seeing multifacetedly births so many interesting things.
I found it kind of hilarious how Pessoa has his other OCs gush about his main OCs poetry and also kind of brilliant from a marketing standpoint because they’re gushing in like lit journals therefore creating more hype for his works. And liked how Pessoa wrote articles about Caeiro like the ultimate author storyboarding their character and trying to delve into their brain and gushing about their OC to anyone would listen for five seconds.
When done with the book I think in parts some of the reason he created so prolifically so many characters who in turn created in their own style. An exploration of these style and thought streams without potential inevitability of another drowning in that ocean. A mind making a multitude of connections to everything like a computer that’s always on and working on a never ending task.
And I do wonder if perhaps his prolific creation of fictional authors and their works which number so vastly they still haven’t finished combing through those trunks was a self regulating method for that ocean, for the ocean sometimes needs to be a stream sometimes for the sake of others, sometimes for its own. And I find it very interesting he would go on discussions with his own characters that he’d type out as himself in as such then sifting his own thoughts & beliefs while getting to know his characters.
All in all I find Pessoa and his processes fascinating and can’t wait to continue reading his works.

The traditional symptoms of breathing distress are nasal flaring, grunting, as well as retractions. Nasal flaring and moderate grunting are common in the immediate postnatal period, yet in the healthy newborn they should solve within 15 to 20 minutes after birth. The respiratory price normally reduces as the job or effort of breathing increases, as shown by the advancement of groaning and also boosting retractions. When breathing distress is mild, recurring groaning at a slower breathing rate might alternating with periods of moderate tachypnea.
Oxygen is used to build the fundamental foundation of life, such as carbs, lipids, and also nucleic acids.
During all elements of the analysis, observe for tiredness or discomfort.
Retractions need a powerful inspiratory initiative as well as decreased lung conformity, as well as they might be absent or less noticeable than expected in a baby with neuromuscular clinical depression.
Unsatisfactory- No physical assessment documentation or no treatment strategy.
Chest development to be symetrical with respiration.
This study will give the possibility to carefully analyze lung noises throughout the checkup. Make sure to appropriately record your searchings for making use of proper clinical terminology. As a household registered nurse practitioner, you need to possess superb physical analysis abilities.

Breathing troubles are not likely to be discovered in a newborn who is centrally pink as well as breathing pleasantly at a typical rate. On respiratory system assessment, he has actually lowered air entry as well as dullness at the right lung base. If another condition is triggering pulmonary hypertension, the underlying condition needs to be dealt with first. This can often stop the pulmonary arteries being completely damaged.
Apply progressed practice nursing expertise to gathering health and wellness background details as well as health examination findings for different patient populations. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a medical condition where the pancreas fails to produce enough digestive enzymes to digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the intestine. EPI can be caused by various conditions, such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and pancreatic cancer. Therapeutics for EPI involve using pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), which provides the necessary digestive enzymes that the pancreas is not producing. PERT is usually taken with meals and snacks to help break down food and absorb nutrients properly; several PERT products are available, such as pancrelipase, pancreatin, and lipase.
Diagnostics for EPI may involve blood tests to measure the levels of digestive enzymes in the blood, fecal elastase test to check the level of pancreatic elastase in the stool, and imaging tests, such as CT scans, MRI, or endoscopic ultrasound to visualize the pancreas and detect any abnormalities. Additionally, breath tests can measure the levels of hydrogen and methane in the breath, indicating EPI.

Super terraformers

The halocarbons are described as ''super- greenhouse gases,'' which, upon arriving in the Martian atmosphere, block the infrared thermal emission to space and significantly warm this chilly world. Small numbers of these solid-fuel rockets are strapped together, and payloads of halocarbons and microorganisms are launched to Mars. Mars is made habitable essentially through the use of such strategic missiles as the American Minuteman 3, the Soviet SS-18 and others, abruptly unemployed because of the effectiveness of popular protest against the nuclear arms race and a certain welcome outbreak of reason in Washington and Moscow.

Lovelock's Mars, humans are not confined inside bulky space suits or domed cities but are free to wander about the breathtaking Martian landscape in warm clothing with simple oxygen masks, while great hydrogen-filled airships transport explorers and colonists over the equatorial latitudes of the planet. Lovelock believes that Mars can be made habitable, or ''terraformed.'' On Mr. Its central theme is an elaboration of the means by which Mr. The book purports to have been written in the year 2245, when Mars supports a self-sustaining and culturally independent human civilization. There are useful discussions of timekeeping and calendrical conventions on Mars, of weightlessness, of how much oxygen it takes to breathe or to light a fire, of the design of interplanetary spacecraft and of the origin of species, to name only a few topics raised. Lovelock and the British science writer Michael Allaby, is a work of popular science attractively disguised as science fiction. He is an inventor of distinction, and his tinkering cast of mind is in evidence throughout this book. Lovelock has contributed significantly to the design of miniaturized gas chromatographs, two of which flew to Mars on the Viking landers in 1976 to analyze the Martian atmosphere and surface. He is an expert on life at low temperatures and on halocarbons, such as the Freons used in refrigerators and aerosol spray cans. James Lovelock is an extraordinary British scientist who has done much of his research in a private laboratory in a thatched cottage on Salisbury Plain. After a century of vague imaginings, and two decades of preliminary exploration, the time may be ripe to begin thinking seriously about sending humans to Mars. Senate Joint Resolution 236, signed by the President in the fall of 1984, expresses the sense of Congress that such a mission would be a useful alternative to a perilous and much more costly arms race in space. Such a mission, occupying years, its progress televised daily back to earth, would have a very real chance of capturing the global imagination. In a microcosm of the circumstances on earth, the American and Soviet crew members would be mutually dependent for their very lives. But a new factor has recently emerged - the possibility that a joint United States- Soviet manned mission to Mars might provide a dramatic opportunity for the two nations to undertake something promising on behalf of the human species. It would be hard to justify such an expedition on purely scientific grounds, because missions with human crews are so much more expensive than missions with their robot counterparts. Today, thanks to spacecraft exploration, we know another Mars: a world of immense volcanic mountains, seasonal dust storms and polar snows, intricately branched river valley networks in which water flowed a billion years ago a world with a vast chasm into one of whose minor tributaries the Grand Canyon would fit, pink skies, white clouds, a thin atmosphere, chilly weather and, so far as we can tell, not a trace of life. Miles away - is Mars, in many respects the mostĬlement extraterrestrial environment we know.Įarlier in this century it was the setting for a celebrated scientific fable about an antique (and thirsty) canal-building civilization, perhaps casting envious eyes on our own waterlogged planet. JUST next door - occasionally a mere 25 million THE GREENING OF MARSīy James Lovelock and Michael Allaby. His first novel, ''Contact,'' will be published this year. Carl Sagan is the director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University and the president of the Planetary Society.
