listening to 'humanz' again and it's kind of crazy how many fans in the youtube comments had a lot of its themes fly right over their head. fans who have a better grasp on the lore can help me here.
but for example, songs like 'halfway to the halfway house' - i can't be the only who thinks the songs sounds...ghostly? spectral? like it's haunted? the way peven's vocal seem to float and the instrumentation is all...bouncy and wavy? it makes me think of this gif from fantasia:
Tumblr media
there has always have been themes of ghosts, demons and possession in gorillaz because of murdoc. 'rise of the ogre' and all that. but on humanz there was (at least to me) that aside the political statements and space themes on the album, the project also seemed to be revolving around those ideas again. 'saturn barz' video has them walking into a haunted house and experiencing an entity (who manifests as popcaan) and then you get songs like 'charger' where 'something' (grace jones) takes a hold of them. 'let me out' calling throughout the police brutality message with mavis staples and pusha t. and 'out of body' with kilo kish and zebra katz. 'i'm alive, i'm alive'.
am i the only one who sees this thread? it also explains why certain songs sound the way they do. so when i see people say it sounds messy, or didn't make sense, i'm just like - i think it does.
i might not be explaining myself very well. but if you know what i'm talking about, feel free to add and comment!

final project
For my final project my focus is the virtual band Gorillaz, and I’ll be asking the following question: how do sounds and aesthetic interconnect to provide an accessible sociopolitical platform for the group? I want to ask this question as the band has expressed themselves on different societal matters throughout their still ongoing carrier and that since the beginning. Their perspective and reflections on questions concerning the human nature in general is as philosophical as it is political, and sometimes perhaps even controversial. This is sometimes not obvious, and sometimes more blatant, however, I will work to argue, it is most often present as the very core of their unique aesthetics (and alongside, of course, music). A major part of their identity and unicity as a band of popular music is their processes of mediation. For that reason, I will be using Negus’ theories on mediation, as well as politics and identities. Finally, before diving into my different sources, I will add that my focus will be on the period going from the creation of the band in 1998 to 2017, with the release of their album Humanz (their most politicly charged album to date), which allows me too, to look at their evolution to answer the question with more nuance as this platform evolves to make products of their times.
Because I’m looking at sounds and aesthetics (as political means) my primary sources will naturally consist of music and images. I will be looking at albums (and so, songs), music videos and album covers.
Primary sources and methodology:
For the music videos:
Dirty harry
Dare
On Melancholy Hill
Cracker Island
Kids with guns
Hallelujah money
Under analysis in these music videos are the visual aesthetics and strategies at work. Looking, on the one hand, at the depiction and visual identities of the characters and the other, the relation between image/lyrics/sounds. I’ll be questioning if the music videos illustrate or amplify the lyrics of the song featured, or if any sounds are added to fit the story depicted (e.g., in the music video for Dirty Harry gunshots are heard, that aren’t in the recorded song). Overall conclusions will be drawn on the fictional world in which the characters evolve and that is found in most of their music videos.
For the songs:
Demon Days (2005):
Feel Good Inc.
O Green World
Kids with Guns
November has come
Dare
Last living souls
Plastic Beach (2010):
Rhinestones eyes
Some kind of nature
Sweepstakes
Humanz (2017):
Ascension
Submission
Hallelujah money
Here I will focus on the lyrics as well as the sounds and their correlation (e.g., samples of children’s choirs or laughter)
For the albums covers:
The cover for their first album Gorillaz (2001)
The cover for Plastic Beach (2010)
The cover for Humanz (2017)
Here, looking at how the aesthetics are at work to illustrate the albums and the different political statements of each of these albums.
One of my secondary sources is by Michael Larson who discusses the general aestheticism involved in the Gorillaz project. Because the band was born and seems to be a reaction and general feeling facing the dark future coming in the turn of the century, Gorillaz is a band who believes in finding a utopia in a dystopian landscape. Offering reactions to issues of the new century, their music and the universe of their characters revolves around sentiments of anxiety, yet of hope as well with touches of a somewhat dark humor. The paper offers a perspective on what served as a basis for giving political statements, that is the very concept of the group.

you’re the only gorillaz blog i follow so i just wanna ask to whomever wants to answer; is anyone else upset with the direction the band is going? like the cult stuff and the “social media bad” messages they’re doing rn ON social media. since plasic beach/humanz i just don’t think jamie and damon are on the same page of what the band should be/do. i love the band to pieces but its been years since i’ve been happy with the work they’ve put out. i thought after the now now and how good it was they would’ve put out better shit but ig not. i’m not mad, just disappointed and dissatisfied which may be worse. i would prefer they stop making content than do this cringe shit ngl
i just sent a long ass anon but i forgot to tell you thanks for being what keeps me up with gorillaz i love and appreciate you<3
Thank you, anon 🥹. I appreciate you too! I've been through a lot while running this blog in the background, so it'll always be special to me even as my interest in Gorillaz fluctuates. I'll open up your question to the floor, either by anon or by replies.
I honestly don't know what to expect here as anons can be fickle lmao. Hopefully everyone can be respectful to your question. I think most readers here feel similarly to you though, so you may be preaching to the choir. Personally, I'm still hoping for a twist or something unexpected the give this phase a spark. Like, maybe there's a chance they'll have some self-awareness this phase if they're going the route of the band being brainwashed in some way...maybe that's commentary on their own contradictory creative decisions over the last few years. Jamon are confused and not on the same page, so the band falls victim to the false prophets they once purported to to be against. Idk though...would they ever make fun of themselves? I think that could work! But I try not to let my expectations get too high.

who are the Gorillaz?
June is Black Music Month!
so I wanted to highlight who has made the Gorillaz what they really are...
these are not the Gorillaz:
Tumblr media
I would argue that even Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn are not the Gorillaz.
from their very inception, the Gorillaz have been made possible by those who Albarn and Hewlett collaborate with. their unique and interesting sound is the result of a multitude of musicians working together.
approximately two thirds of their collaborators have been black musicians
THESE are the Gorillaz that we love so dearly:

For those who don’t know the song ‘Hallelujah Money’, it is a song released by the band, ‘Gorillaz’ on the ‘Humanz’ album on January 17, 2017. Or more known as the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration (keep this in mind, it’s very important.). The majority of the vocals were sung by Benjamin Clementine, the rest of course, was 2-d. The lyrics can be found here, if you want to read them. The music video can be found here. I suggest watching and reading both before really looking into this.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a big music person, I only find music video interest in the Gorillaz music videos. If I say something that you do not believe or have differing opinions, great. This is just what I bring to the table all these years later. There’s plenty more where I come from.
THE VIDEO:
I’m going to explain as best as I can with both parts so bear with me. Again, it would help to watch the video to see the background and the emotions in the video as portrayed by Benjamin. So, in the music video upon opening, we see the only person who will be the center of the whole music video, Benjamin. We see him in a shiny, gold building. This hallway, in the building, is a reference to the Trump Tower and Benjamin is portraying Trump, or at the least his ideals. The background images that are used in the music video are disturbing and can sometimes set an uneasy feeling. I’m not going to go super in depth on each image or video because there’s a lot but you can find the breakdown somewhere. In the music video we see flashes for symbols or things that symbolize power, such as the pyramid with the eye on the back of the US dollar bill (which is said to represent God or the illuminati, so pick one), a cowboy, and even a creepy clown video (not really a ‘power’ in a societal sense, but they affected how we lived for a while.) While the videos and pictures are shown in the back, the lyrics are being said. The majority of the time, the video and pictures have somewhat no connotation to the lyrics being sung. The end of the video ends with a clip of Spongebob screaming and crying, this was taken from the episode called ‘Karate Choppers’ from season one. The clip is right after Mr.Krabs, his boss, tells him that he’s fired. “You’re fired.” is one of Donald Trump’s signature quotes.
THE LYRICS:
Going into the lyrics I will also tie into the things that I had talked about in the music video. The lyrics in the beginning are more of acknowledging that the US is a growing country and that everyone is allowed here, except for `The scarecrows that come from the far east”. Benjamin then sings that to keep them away “Is by building walls, Walls like unicorns In full glory and galore” making a reference to the wall Trump had promised in his campaign that he was going to build. A lot of people in the states were looking forward to this and as it states, it was going to be a big project that would be looked at by many. Benjamin at this time in the music video is calm and collected and seems to be confident in what he is saying. He is also singing his thoughts about the American Dream, and how it is only for the starving, To me, this is saying that the people who don’t have it bad in this country don’t even have to think about the American Dream because they think they are already living it. Those who are struggling to get by everyday dream about the day where they won’t have to get up and wonder what their next meal is or even if they will see next week. Those people have their own dreams about the American Dream. He then thanks the people for trusting him, a reference to the fact that he is going to get inaugurated the next day. I’m going to skip 2-d’s parts for now and skip to the next time Benjamin starts to sing. The next verse that Benjamin sings is ‘Trump’ saying that even though this is how life is, we can’t do much about it, everyone in the world just wants power. We can’t be upset over something that is bound to repeat itself. He even says, “And the whole beasts of nations desire, Power”. In some way or another we want power. Trump definitely understood this and had taken it to a whole new level.
Now going into 2-d’s parts he sings both bridges in the song. In both parts that he sings he is singing directly to Benjamin. He’s asking these questions that we still ask today, “When the morning come, We are still human, How will we know? How will we dream? How will we love? How will we know ?” These questions are from the people and they are asking that if the world is so corrupt, how will we ever be able to love each other if all we can do is fight and argue. The first time 2-d comes to ask these questions, all Benjamin can do is listen. 2-d sits in Benjamin’s silhouette and Benjamin stays still. The second time he sings the same lyrics, Benjamin seems uneasy and worried, scared, and fearful. Benjamin’s hands are shaking and the book he’s holding, he is weary about. The music becomes more, ‘anxiety filled’. Then not too long after 2-d is done, Benjamin goes back to normal. Symbolizing that in his campaign and unknowingly, the years to come, he was going to be questioned and under heavy watch because not only was he a public figure, but a lot of allegations and scandals came up about him. In the same moment, he starts to sing, “Hallelujah Money” and rub his hands together in a way that you would say money, with your thumb, pointer, and middle finger. This was then showing that even after all of that, he still had support and his fame, all the efforts did nothing to him. He wasn't phased by a single thing that came towards him.
MY THOUGHTS:
So what are my thoughts on this music video? Three words.
Absolutely.
Fucking.
Incredible.
This music video was not only amazingly made, but Benjamin did the entire music video in one take. But coming away from that, the message that this brings to the table about how the former president saw the American Dream? How he felt about power and wealth? I think it captured it perfectly. The imagery that was used in the back of the video is stunning. The way they used the analogies in this was so intricate, but it worked and fit so well. The way that they went into it and went, ‘Ya know what. Let’s give it to em’.’ My absolute favorite part of this was the lines used to describe the different sides of the American Dream. The way they also used the tree analogy in the beginning to describe the idea of western prosperity just really sold it for me. The way this song was produced and how it sounds like a choir is singing with Benjamin to me is just the opinions of the people who agree with Trump and his ideals and them being like, ‘yeah, for the money.’ The kind of tone that song has is kind of 'rejoiceful' but having that hint of that ‘uneasiness’ that I had mentioned earlier. It just makes you think that it’s a normal Gorillaz song. The entire song is just powerful to me and after seeing it once again and hearing the song once again, and celebrating 4 years of the album...My appreciation only grows for it.
That’s pretty much it but I would like to close out with a quote from none other than Murdoc Niccals himself:
"In these dark times, we all need someone to look up to. That's why I'm giving you this new Gorillaz song, a lighting bolt of truth in a black night. You're welcome."

Went to see Gorillaz in KC
It was so fun and amazing best night of my life so far ‼️ Damon looked like he was pumped everyone sang along to everything, we even did the Clinteast wood Del parts. I finnally got the Humanz dance party I always wanted (danicning to tw humanz album with people) sadly I did not meet Damon or Jamie like I had hoped because the band had to leave soon to go to the vegas festival but lucky I got to meet Peven Everett and a humanz choir member out of pure luck before they left. ✨ also I got a few Gfoot shirts and Noodles glasses and it was pretty great

So, we were fortunate enough to have been able to go to the Gorillaz concert in Kansas City on the 22nd, which was ridiculously good, but definitely exhausting, overall. KC seems a little greener than St Louis, with less of the red brick I'm so familiar with, but the vibe was similar. It definitely had the feeling of a midwest city. I'd driven through their only once on my way back from Seattle, and the difference was literally night and day (as well as late summer / winter), but I still recognized the road I'd taken on the way through the city. The turnaround didn't give me the same degree of whiplash I got on the Chicago trip - we were there marginally longer - but it was still really quick. We got up on the morning of the 22nd, drove out, had a heavy lunch, checked in at the hotel and had a beer, and went to the concert. Then we came back, had a drink, and went to bed. We got out in a reasonably comfortable time frame the next morning, waiting until we'd had breakfast at least, and we did get back a little later than we expected, but there was no real time for relaxation.
Our seats were actually even better than we had supposed; we were viewing from the side, but we were still able to see clearly. Also, Vince Staples and Danny Brown both opened for the main act, which was great and I hadn't realized both of them were opening until they did.
The Gorillaz concert was legitimately overwhelming, which I don't mean in a bad way, but there was almost literally so much going on that I couldn't take it in all at once. Vince Staples and Danny Brown both did pretty well in terms of getting an audience reaction from the crowd, and I don't know if KC is the same as St Louis in this regard, but I know in St Louis, it's tough to get participation. I've heard musicians express this sentiment before - it's tough. Not that the crowd is hostile or anything, but they're self-conscious, maybe? But Damon Albarn and the rest of the band came out and literally everyone in the stadium stood up at once and didn't sit back down at all - I've never seen anything like it. I figure that's because I get out less than a lot of people, so that's more of an expression about me than the crowd, but the crowd was hype and that hype just got bigger as the concert went on.
The Gorillaz are a band that always makes me think of this concept of the hyper-real - especially when interviews are conducted with reputable media outlets with characters themselves and, meanwhile, Damon Albarn is interviewed elsewhere, treated as a separate entity, maybe an affiliate, simultaneously "the band" and not the band. I couldn't avoid thinking about that even while I'm clapping, singing, whatever, because on the back wall, they're playing music videos that are intentionally glitching out, there are screens on the sides that are showing you the concert as it happens from a viewpoint you couldn't access otherwise, and meanwhile, you've got the choir singing, the band is playing, often dancing, definitely trying to draw your eye - you can't watch them all at once, so you pick, you alternate. There's often a singer who's not present physically - their presence replaces the animation for a time so you can see them - this is especially with the tracks from the Humanz album, where it seems especially important to have the vocalists be present in the song. At a time when the simple existence of black artists seems to be controversial to white people, it seemed important that their impact on the tracks was made explicit and literally larger than the flesh and blood Albarn himself - actually occasionally absent during these moments.
So, that was cool.
Before we checked in, we were looking for somewhere to eat lunch in town and had some time to kill. Both Jim Gaffigan and Anthony Bourdain recommended Joe's Kansas City BBQ - Bourdain calling it the best in the world - and while Bourdain is kind of an ass, I liked the idea of a place that had that kind of recommendation-overlap, so that's where we went. What I'll say is that it was good - I really enjoyed what I ate, and it was definitely worth going. What I'll also say is that I've had BBQ that was every bit as good, and I live practically down the street from the region's best BBQ place here, so what I'm actually hype about is how spoiled I am on amazing BBQ options on the daily. For the record, Joe's french fries are better, but Beast BBQ's potato salad is significantly better, if we're talking about sides.
We got to stay at The President near the arena, like a five minute walk away actually, and ate breakfast at the Walnut Room where I ordered the eggs benedict, which was pretty excellent, but I usually eat pretty light, so I kind of ended up feeling uncomfortable for a while after my two incredibly heavy meals - basically eating once per day for three days.
Anyhow, when you ask me how something was that I did, half of what I talk about is the thing and the other half is what I ate, and that is just how I live my life.

Some of the replies I’ve been getting on youtube have been ppl complaining about the amount of featured artists on Humanz and i’m like mate?? Demon Days alone features Neneh Cherry, Shaun Ryder, De La Soul, DOOM, Ike Turner, Dennis Hopper, Bootie Brown, Roots Menuva, Martina Topley-Bird, the London Community Gospel Choir... and I haven’t even started on the features on Plastic Beach like why are people shitting themselves over there being features on a Gorillaz album all of a sudden like ???

"Halleujah Money" (feat. Benjamin Clementine)
[Benjamin Clementine:] Here is our tree That primitively grows And when you go to bed Scarecrows from the far east Come to eat Its tender fruits And I thought the best way to perfect our tree Is by building walls Walls like unicorns In full glory And galore And even stronger Than the walls of Jericho But glad then my friend Out in the field we shall reap a better day What we have always dreamt of having Are now for the starving It is love, that is the root of all evil But not our tree And thank you my friend For trusting me
[Benjamin Clementine (Choir):] Hallelujah (Hallelujah) Hallelujah money (Past the chemtrails) Hallelujah money...
[2D:] How will we know? When the morning comes We are still human How will we know? How will we dream? How will we love? How will we know?
[Benjamin Clementine:] Don't worry, my friend If this be the end, then so shall it be Until we say so, nothing will move Ah, don't worry It's not against our morals It's legally tender Touch my friend While the whole world And whole beasts of nations desire Power
[2D:] When the morning comes We are still human How will we know? How will we dream? How will we love? How will we know?
[Benjamin Clementine (Choir):] (Hallelujah money) Hallelujah money (Past the chemtrails) Hallelujah money...

9/10 after like 50 plays over the past few weeks it’s still great
strobelite
oh this is a cute intro. very bouncy
sounds like a hip and trendy remix of the seinfeld intro. im digging it
this is the type of song you go swaggering down the street to wearing ur fancy new 70s disco duds
just had a mental image of murdoc dancing disco to this
i feel like this is gonna grow on me in the coming weeks
noodle’s falsetto is so cute she’s going so hard i love her
7/10 i like how happy it was
saturnz barz
honestly after how joyful strobelite was this tempered the album really nicely
i still can’t listen to this song without thinking about murdoc’s dick. minus one point
honestly i’m only four songs deep and the album already has got a really strong electronic pulsing haunting vibe going and i love how well it all goes together
death by 2d. those vocals? WHACK and by whack i mean i want to cry it’s so beautiful

honestly the fact that this is in a major key makes it like. really psychedelic party hard i can see people headbanging and on hella drugs listening to this
i think i liked the intro part more than when it got all dreamy at the end
7/10 kind of petered off at the end but the intro was really amazing
interlude: the non-conformist oath
i promise not to repeat things other people say lmao
4/10 obligatory weird shit from damon
submission

all the choir backings make me think of the whole band just singing quietly together in the back and. idk it’s such a good image of them all being so deep into their music and jamming together and on the same wavelength
what the hell kind of noise is 2d making in the background of this
i feel like this is gonna get stuck in my head in the next week
HOLY SHIT THE RAP i like his rap style very erratic
the choral vocals behind the jumpy rap is so good

so deep and ethereal i feel like i’m sitting on a roof staring up at the stars about to fall into space
I CAN’T GET BACK WITHOUT YOU
this is another love song on par with to binge or on melancholy hill
murdoc niccals or stuart pot or SOMEONE IN THIS BAND is in LOVE WITH SOMEONE and it’s BREAKING THEM APART
THE BACKING VOCALS oh noooo oh noo oh no
fuck i’m really actually tearing up i [note: i had to stop here because my breathing was getting funny and i was tearing up and my rommate is asleep so i had to calm down]
he sounds like a lost little child looking at the stars through his window
the deep bass sounds and the minor chords and the gentle snapping. im floating
THE SLIDING NOISES this is what it feels like to be in space my heart is so cold and empty but so full
the ending satellite. the gentle rain noises. the setting down of the music. goodbye i am dead tell damon albarn that he has killed a person on this day
10/10 this song is one of those rare ones that catches me by the heart and reminds me of dark blue and stars. thenks damon albarn for my life and someone please comfort 2d
interlude: talk radio
why are there so many interludes in this damn album
wtf
uhhhhhhhh
is this guy okay
2/10 what the fuck
carnival
what the fuck
oh okay that opening beat was cool
is someone knocking on a door. let them in
the keyboard in the back is cool i guess
someone please let whoever’s knocking in
very bobby womack-y vibe. pretty intense between the dark instrumentals and the KNOCKING WHICH DOES NOT END
hyeAUp
3/10 i didn’t really like it. very spinny tho and it goes well with the rest of the album as like a filler song
let me out
MAMA MAVIS OH MAMA THEY TRY MY PATIENCE
OH OH OH IT’S GONE WHO IS LEFT TO SAVE US
OH OH OH WE MOURN IM PRAYIN FOR MY NEIGHBORS
THEY SAY THE DEVIL’S AT WORK AND oh IS CALLIN FAVORS
honestly the little electronic oh oh oh’s in the beginning are what i live for
plus they bleep out trump which is hilarious drag him damon
let me out let me out let me out it’s DEL LET HIM OUT
fuck this was my favorite out of all the singles i listened to it 15 times today
2d’s vocals are adorable yeah yeah yeah
the whispering gets me SO MCFREAKING PUMPED im ready to OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT
the build up gives me legitimate shivers. the whispering and the choral vocals ugH i love it
you gotta die a little if you wanna live
the ending is so haunting
let me out
9/10 i love this song so much please let del out. my only problem with it is that i sound dumb when i try and sing the first lines with the electronic oh’s
interlude: penthouse
REALLY ANOTHER ONE
damn someone’s goin hard
ding
5/10 sounds like one of those audio posts where people do some song but heard through the wall
sex murder party
just looking at the title i know murdoc wrote this
oohhhhh nice beat
this is like going to a cool underground house party with lots of smoke and colored strobe lights somewhere in germany
is someone playing the kazoo
idk i don’t think 2d’s sleepy sad vocals really go with this it sounds like he’s mourning while walking down a runway
on that note: model 2d walking down a runway. he would fall off the stage almost immediately
this sounds like something that would play in forever 21
the deep voice has some cool lyrics
why are they whimpering the words sex murder party
the kazoo is back
murder murder murder muuurder
4/10 didn’t love it but it was better than carnival and it had a kazoo
she’s my collar
ohHHH i like this very punk pop
oH SHIT damn stu those vocals tho
wait what is he talking about a collar
DID HE JUST SAY SHE’S MY FURSONA
i likE IT IT’S VERY DARK AND BOUNCY AND ETHEREAL BUT UHHHHH IS THIS A REFERENCE TO ALL THE BDSM AND FURRY SHIT GOING ON THIS PHASE
the panting .. . . mmmmmm
2d’s tryna get some
KALI DAAAAAAAMN
this is a really sexual song but i really love it
i really love when 2d speaks quickly and semi-raps
kali’s vocals are gorgeous. also her snapchats were great
she’s my collar she’s the one i’m running with
im jammin out this is gonna be my new jam
FUCk the panting came back i. wasn’t expecting this
9/10 2d’s into some kinky shit but i’d still let him fuck me
WAIT THE PANTING IS A REFERNECE TO DOGS FUCKING SHIT IT’S A PUPPY PLAY REFERENCE WITH ALL THE 2D DOG STUFF THIS PHASE FU ck
i am. kinkshaming. minus one point for making me suffer through this realization
interlude: the elephant
COME THE FUCK ON THEY’RE NOT INTERLUDES ANYMORE IF THEY TAKE UP THREE QUARTERS OF THE GOTDAMN ALBUM
uhhhhh again. what the fuck
2/10 these are getting annoying
hallelujah money
so unsettling and weird but that’s what it’s going for i guess
ben clementine’s voice is so good and it sounds like a sermon esp with the choir in the back i love it
idk it makes me sad because it reminds me of the night of the election and how everyone cried and was so scared
i love the chord progressions
haaaaaaallelujah moneeeeeeey
again 2d’s vocals kill me i have been slain thrice
we are still humans, how will we know, how will we dream, how will we love
what fantastic lyrics. the crux of the album tbh i feel like i’m being told a story
this song terrifies and creeps me out but makes me feel warm and strong like i can face the scary things it brings up??  i don’t like it as a song per se but as a piece of art with a message it’s absolutely amazing
HALLELUJAH MONEY
where is my spongebob scream
8/10 i never loved this song but i appreciated the chord progressions a lot this time around and it adds a lot to the message of the album. also it fuckin destroys donald trump lmao damon what is ur damage i love it
we got the power
honestly it’s upbeat and i like that but it’s a little bit too cheesy for me
the claps in the back remind me of that shitpost where it’s like the people in the 80s doing that weird dance yoga
this is a good song to do jazzercise to. imagine murdoc doing jazzercise
 never mind don’t do that
“on the m1″ is that a reference to m1a1?
oh oh oh stu ur so cute
the backing instrumentals are so powerful i feel like i am being propelled through the stratosphere on russel’s back
5/10 it’s cute and happy but i never really ever got into it even after having had time to
interlude: new world
P L E A S E N O M O R E I N T E R L U D E S
this sounds like an electronic soap opera intro theme song
the elevator? ? i guess the elevator is the new thing this album
oh fuck this is creepy
yikes yikes YIKES
honestly it has an actual uhhhh music ish thing going on so?? ? i guess there’s that
i just wanted to be close to you BITCH NO GET THE FUCK AWAY
2/10 because i don’t want to be close to whatever’s whisperin in my ear and also because apparently damon albarn does not understand what an interlude is
the apprentice
so great. so jazzy. so cool and suave.
clap clap clap cla-cla-clap i love the beat
I AM A BROKEN SCREEN I’M A MAP ROUTINE
this is also going to get stuck in my head isn’t it
I’M INSIDE YOUR HEAD ya u are
oooohhh the electronics are so bubbly
THE FEMALE SINGER’S VOICE? ? ? SO SMOOTH SO GOOD so gorgeous im dead
this song reminds me of a lava lamp
YO NEW BLACK KING NEW YORK DREAM
IM THE FIRST BLACK PRINCE OF A NEW WHITE KING
god this rap is so great
normally i don’t like slower songs but this one just. takes its time and jams out and knows exactly what it’s doing. what a bop
8/10 a solid addition to the album and holds its own really well
halfway to the halfway house
this album is so long but i’m not complaining. actually i am a little because i have a writing sample due in an hour and a half and my computer is dying but this is more important
nice spaceship sounds
2d’s really jamming out on those bloopy keyboard sounds isn’t he
it’s like floating in a pool of static kinda
i like the chorus esp since everyone in the band is singing together which i still think is so cute
everyone singing on it has really good voices but idk the fact that there’s no real melody kinda distracts from that
it sounds like a congregation or a gospel choir which is super cool
3.5/10 it was pretty cool but a little too aimless for me
out of body
pipe down pipe down
tHIS IS CREEPIN ME OUT
oh SHIT WAIT THIS IS SO COOL DAMN
i don’t know who’s rapping right now but i love her and her voice
THIS GOES OFF DAMN
i love it. i love this song this is so bouncy and cool and it’s so cute too with the lyrics telling you how to dance
noodle wrote this. noodle 100% wrote this
i feel so cool listening to this
this is definitely going to be in a commercial for like. fashion or makeup or something
this is the new runway song
this is something you listen to right before going out to some fancy european club with like models and weird plastic architecture
oH SHIT OH SHIT 2D’S RAPPING IM SCREAMIGN
FUCK
FUCK IM YELLING his voice is so high im screeching
they made this fucking dork into a suave motherfucker
9/10 i was briefly transformed into a european model and stuart “two-dents” pot makes his debut as a falsetto rapper and also establishes himself as the coolest baddest hippest raddest mofo out there despite not being able to tie his shoes
ticker tape
it’s almost over :(
very dreamlike and chill
awwww the way he sings ticker tape is so cute
the whistling!
okay this one’s cute it’s like. very dreamy and sweet
cauterized and beautiful wow i like those words
i can see stu or russ singing this gently under their breath while just doing work. what a cute and sweet song
it’s about healing? maybe they’re healing their relationships with each other. i hope so
a sudden draft and quick chill, a single snowflake falls and that is all damon your imagery is fantastic as always
ohh the acapella is so nice. this means murdoc had to go buh buh buh in the back which is cute
the sudden stops are so quirky
again i love the crackling of vinyl at the ends of some of these
7/10 super cute and not what i expected at all from such a dark album
circle of friendz
the final song? ?? i hope it’s good i wanna give it a 10
ohhhh what’s gonna happen with this buildup
who’s breaking shit
aw these lyrics are cute even though they’re a little juvenile
a circle of friends :))))))
the growing instrumentals in the back are so sweet
stu and noodle singing my circle of friends as the last thing in the album rotted my teeth and gave me diabetes
a cute ending!!!! even though it didn’t wow me it made me smile
7/10 they are a happy family
faves: ascension, saturnz barz, momentz, submission, andromeda, busted and blue, let me out, the apprentice, out of body
overall: not going to give it a numerical rating because i would just give it a 10 because i was so excited for it. honestly i think it was a pretty solid album there weren't any breakout hits like feel good inc. or whatever but they did a really solid job on it in total. thenks damon albarn for my life please tell 2d and noodle and russel and murdoc i love them

You are now tuned into the tomb of Jehova
Play my tunes loud enough to shake the room, what's the hold up?
Heard the world is ending soon I assumed that they told ya
They tryna dinosaur us so now it's time to go up
[Vince Staples & The Humanz Choir]
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
[Vince Staples]
The roof is on fire
She wet like Barbra Streisand
Police everywhere
It's like a nigga killed a white man
I just wanna find a baby mama 'fore the night end
So don't be coming 'round Vince
On that batter ram shit
On that 911 shit
Need a misses brown as Missy
I can have some fun with
Them slave bones make Grace Jones
Don't stop, bitch, stay focused
They hated on us since days of Moses
Let my people go crazy
Them stars falling, don't chase 'em
[Vince Staples & The Humanz]
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
[2D]
Attack on Iraq
It's on a line
Typing it fast
Then it's slipping my mind
Oh, when I'm drunk
I'm spirited back
I fall in a fire then I save myself
Then I get advantage
'Cause the feeling's so raw
In these times of sedition
Well, nothing is dull
And I'm moving into stillness
And recalling it all
And I’m a lover, just a lover, just a lover, just a lover, just a-
[Vince Staples & The Humanz]
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)
[Vince Staples]
All these liberated women sitting in my lap
I'm finna catch a body like I got a gun and badge
I'm finna turn Obama to my partner 'fore he dash
Pull up to the pad, wipe my ass with the flag
I'm just playing, baby, this the land of the free
Where you can get a Glock and a gram for the cheap
Where you can live your dreams long as you don't look like me
Be a puppet on a string, hanging from a fucking tree
(Aghh!)
[Vince Staples & The Humanz]
The sky's falling, baby
Drop that ass 'fore it crash (higher)

Listening To Humanz
LET’S JUST GET INTO THIS BECAUSE THIS IS ORIGINAL SHUSH YOU.. (I go in more in depth the farther I get into the album... Mainly for the new songs okie)
Ascension - Catchy as hell, lyrics true as fuck. TOO RAEL. 8/10
Strobelite - Too groovy for me. Give me more. Like literally straight out of the 70’s. It’s actually really catchy though okay? 7/10
Saturnz Barz - Still super dope. I love the rap even though I understand like .02%. 11/10
Momentz - THIS ONE IS LIKE SO SUPER CATCHY AND I LOVE IT YO. It’s so absurd and weird just like everything in Gorillaz. :D (Also are the female vocals actually Noodle cUZ GURL) 13/10
The Non-Conformist Oath - ALSO THIS INTERLUDE IS MY DAMN FAVE
Submission - Still not sure how to feel about this one. The female vocals are sexy af tho, it’s just so… like? POP? It’s pretty good though idk just very unlike most of Gorillaz things. The rap is certainly different though (THAT VOICE EEEHHH) 4/10
Charger - YAS YAS YAS YAS I LOVE THIS ONE SO DAMN MUCH ITS SO BADASS AND JUST CATCHY AND 120% YESSD 20/10
Andromeda - This one is pretty damn chill. Gotta admit I sort of liked some of the remixes more though, but it’s a hella good song :D 8/10
Busted And Blue - This one is my favorite out of the entire album. So much 2D. So much feels. This one is just so soft and precious and just… Oh man my heart. Just listening to the emotion!!! Liek iff u crie evur tiem 100000/10
Carnival - This one.. Is weird and doesn’t stand out to me too much? It’s not bad. I like the instrumentals and stuff. But like Submission it just doesn’t feel right? MEH. 5/10
Let Me Out - This is my 2nd favorite song in the album. Kinda tied with She’s My Collar. IT IS SO GOOD THOUGH. I loved the meaning and I was so hyped when I first listened to this one. 50/10
Sex Murder Party - This one is real catchy. Also real weird and real mature ;) It’s a good one tho I mean (plus 2d vocals are gud af) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 9/10
She’s My Collar - THIS ONE IS SO SEXY AND SO GOOOOODDD??? Like holy shit dude this song has me like sweatin’. TIED UP WITH LET ME OUT. 50/10
Hallelujah Money - A lot of people didn’t like this first time listening? I FELL IN LOVE IN THE FIRST FEW SECONDS. This is one of my faves for sure, it’s so GOOD. And meaningful sooo  (but where is spongebab??) 25/10
We Got The Power - This isn’t the best song, but it’s the best way to end this album. It’s fuckin uplifting and I need that shit in my life… Especially after the roller coaster that was this album.
BONUS TRACKS
No thanks to that interlude
The Apprentice - Such a good song tbh?? The vocals all blend in so well together and I love that. I LOVE 2D JUST SINGING “It’s Cold” (I’m a nerd for 2D <3) It’s so fuckin good though seriously 3RD FAVE 49/10
Halfway To The Halfway House - This one is funky, it’s cool but like what’s going on with the actual melody? IDK. I like the choir a lot, this is JUST SO WEIRD WHAT DOE IT MEAN. Anywho, 8/10 because original af
Out Of Body - I LEGIT THOUGHT POPPY WAS TALKING TO ME IN A GORILLAZ SONG?? AND THEN SHE STARTED TALKIN ABOUT CULTS UUHHH NO THANKS?? It isn’t Poppy but I swear to butts, OKAY BUT THIS SONG IS AWESOME AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH. (also 2D at the end my hEART)  9/10
Ticker Tape - This song is so gorgeous and so surreal and I love it so much? So chill and just yes man. Ticker-Tape is fun to say though. SO MUCH 2D TOO WOOT!!! Other vocals were fantastic too though! 10/10
Circle Of Friends - This song is so pure??? LIKE???? I love this so much it makes me so giddy? ITS SO CHEEZY BUT YA KNOW. 10/10 good way to end the deluxe album. After all that scary shit, it was good as fuck.
My ratings are whack, but holy shit I loved this album. I AM SO HAPPY AND EXCITED FOR WHAT ELSE THEY WILL DO WITH GORILLAZ.
