Day 20. February 18, 2020. Havelock day rides. 100km.
Woke up to a light drizzle. Eye swelling down to near normal. 👍 This is supposed to be the last of our recent series of wet days. The cider didn't have any ill effects and we strolled across the street to the Sneaky beach cafe. I had a steak & mushroom pie but was significantly out ordered by the eggs Benedict with salmon that were delivered across from me. 👀 No chance to ride in more comfortable gear due to rain and also projected gravel/dirt encounters today. We geared up and headed south. Somehow we missed the Queen Charlotte Road turnoff right in town and instead went nearly to Blenheim before we realized we had missed it. Oh well. We were in the very heart of the Marlborough wineries north of Blenheim. Perfectly manicured rows of grapevines spread out far and wide from both sides of the roads. The countless vineyard rows were broken up by picturesque wineries and inns. Looks like a great place to have a wine tour! 🍷 We detoured a few miles south to Blenheim outskirts and rejiggered our plan. We opted to take the twisty and notable coastal roads Port Underwood ( dirt/gravel and steep with hundreds of sharp turns) and the aforementioned Queen Charlotte which was paved with similar elevation changes and twistiness. The rain ensured that Port Underwood was taken mostly in first gear. The possibly more than a dozen bays of various sizes were reluctant to yield their full beauty due to the rain, some fog, dense foliage and some being entirely private. A few had only one to three people living there and any egress was gated. However there were a few spots that rewarded with tumbling bay views, nearby islands and even a pretty good look at the North Island (first pic above) in the distance. That's about 27 miles away!
We saw one of the inter island ferries steaming towards Picton. Picton is the place on the S. Island where the ferries from Wellington (N. Island) dock. Every hour or so it seems a ferry is coming or going. Large ships loaded with trucks, buses, cars and people. Picton has a busy downtown and we parked our bikes right in front of some of the waterfront cafes. Decided to grab a table outside at the Seabreeze cafe on the corner of High St. & London Quay. We rode past four old British bikes (at least one Matchless) for the second time on our way to the water. I ordered lunch which was tiger prawns with garlic, coconut milk, chili and ginger along with toasted ciabatta. That was followed by a warmed orange and chocolate muffin. 😋 As I sat there before leaving the vintage British bikes rolled up toward the ferry. One, two, came on through the intersection. Number four had his engine die right in front of me! In fact he rolled it back to a spot right next to my bike as it was a slight uphill to the traffic circle and started checking all his wires. After a few minutes he rolled it back down the hill and onto a sidewalk with number 3 and they proceeded to try to figure out what was the problem. Love old bikes but this is why I don't ride them! Felt bad for him but he could've pushed it to the ferry if he had to from that position. We shopped a little and I bought an oilclioth supposedly crushable hat. Good for the rain as none of my baseball hats were very rain proof. From Picton we took the continuation of the dramatic road and views via Queen Charlotte counter clockwise up the coast then angled inland a bit to catch up with Havelock. Only a 100km day but the most death grips on the handlebars of the whole trip due to grade and slickness on Port Underwood. A little lie down was in order but turns out it was usurped by Boggle catch up and this very blog. That's OK, have been getting good sleep here. Still stumped by the lack of people here. We made a similar loop of the loca establishments to last night. I ordered the seafood pasta which was excellent at the Slip Inn. The Captain's Daughter was out of food due to a Lions Club meeting upstairs. The drizzle seemed to be ending by around 8. Hoping for some better light for views and pics tomorrow. Great day though! 😴

03/14/20 - Lone Pine, CA - One of the great things about being retired nomads is that we are free to be as flexible as we please with our travel schedule. As an example, right now we’re supposed to be following the coastal route to Oregon. But after looking at the 10-day weather forecast with rain everyday on the coast and snow everyday in the mountains, we decided it might be more fun to do an unplanned ski trip in the mountains. So here we are in Lone Pine, CA headed north to Lake Tahoe with the Eastern Sierras (see pic) as our companions. However, there is a big problem starting to rear it’s ugly head which might interfere with our plans: the Covid-19 pandemic which is now becoming a big deal in California. We first noticed it last night in Bakersfield, CA watching local news reports about the super market hoarding panic caused by the possibility of future shelter-in-place orders. We heard that toilet paper, hand sanitizer and bottled water were the ‘big three’ hard to find items. So I got up early this morning to see if that was true. Decided to hit the local Walmart at 7 AM before the crowds arrived. Wrong! The store, usually very quiet that early in the day, was a madhouse. Just as the news reports had said, they were out of toilet paper and hand sanitizer and down to their last few gallon jugs of bottled water. It reminded me of the scarcities we experienced in Houston in the days just before the big hurricanes hit. We did find some RV toilet paper later this morning at a Camping World. But it wasn’t shelved; instead, it was secured behind the cashiers and could only be purchased in rationed quantities if you were a Good Sam Club member which thankfully we are. Big sigh of relief there. All in all, our shopping experience this morning was a real eye-opener and hopefully not a portent of things to come. For now, we are just hoping that the Lake Tahoe ski resorts, with all the recent snowfall, remain open.

Butterflies and Other Chatter
Most people seem to be reporting the garden feeders going quiet as birds finish their breeding season and the adults go into moult. Our feeders are still extremely busy with Blue and Great Tits, but also Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Blackbirds, House Sparrows and Starlings are here in big numbers. We’re missing our Chaffinch and haven’t seen many Dunnock of late, but Nuthatch, Goldfinch, Jackdaw and Robin are around, just spotted less frequenty. I’m sure I’m missing out loads more.
Did I say though that when we went up through the Hop Garden last week that it was strangely quiet of birdsong? not at all like it usually is. I mean I know the Swallows prefer the other side of the lane, near the water supplies and some migrants may be already making their way back, but the fields and hedges are usually full of noisy natives too. I have a few pics of that walk for my next entry here. It was a lovely day though and we saw lots of butterflies, which I’ll concentrate on today.
Tumblr media
Red Admiral  (Vanessa atalanta)
Do you know, I’m not sure I’ve ever captured a male Red Admiral, their upper stripe is true red, whereas the female has orange, which seems to be the case in all my photos.
UK Butterflies site says
This butterfly is primarily a migrant to our shores, although sightings of individuals and immature stages in the first few months of the year, especially in the south of England, mean that this butterfly is now considered resident. This resident population is considered to only be a small fraction of the population seen in the British Isles, which gets topped up every year with migrants arriving in May and June that originate in central Europe
Tumblr media
Whenever we go that way we seem to see mostly Small/Large Whites or Red Admiral butterflies, which figures as they’re one of the most common types. The Red Admirals seem to follow us and I’m never quite sure if I’m photographing the same one! Most of them look rather dusty or rain battered too, but they’re a smashing splash of colour.
The Meadow Browns are smaller and much more discretely coloured - very delicate. We’ve seen quite a number of them, although they’re usually stationary with wings folded in, no matter how long I wait, which is frustrating sometimes. I just read that’s how they always rest (wings folded in) That reminds me of being told Elephants rest by standing still and raising one leg, I wonder if that’s an origin of the saying to take the weight off (your feet)? Seems likely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meadow Brown ( Maniola jurtina)
The Meadow Brown is one of our commonest and most widespread butterflies, and a familiar sight throughout the summer months. This species can be found in all parts of the British Isles, with the exception of the most mountainous regions and Shetland. This is a highly variable species with four named subspecies found in the British Isles, although the differences between them are often subtle.
Tumblr media
Another orange and brown butterfly is the Comma, which has the very distinctive raggedy pattern to its wing edges.
Tumblr media
Comma  (Polygonia c-album)
The Comma is a fascinating butterfly. The scalloped edges and cryptic colouring of the wings conceal hibernating adults amongst dead leaves, while the larvae, flecked with brown and white markings, bear close resemblance to bird droppings.
The species has a flexible life cycle, which allows it to capitalize on favourable weather conditions. However, the most remarkable feature of the Comma has been its severe decline in the twentieth century and subsequent comeback. It is now widespread in southern Britain and its range is expanding northwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Small White  (Pieris rapae)
It has brilliant white wings, with small black tips to the forewings and one or two wing spots. The undersides are a creamy white.
The Large White is similar but larger, and has a larger spot in the tip of the forewing that extends down the wing's edge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve got a few more Butterfly pics in my folder.
Tumblr media
Holly Blue  (Celastrina argiolus)
Wings are bright blue. Females have black wing edges. Undersides pale blue with small black spots which distinguish them from Common Blue.
The Holly Blue is easily identified in early spring, as it emerges well before other blue butterflies. It tends to fly high around bushes and trees, whereas other grassland blues usually stay near ground level. It is much the commonest blue found in parks and gardens where it congregates around Holly (in spring) and Ivy (in late summer).
The Holly Blue is widespread but undergoes large fluctuations in numbers from year to year. It has expanded northwards in recent years and has colonised parts of midland and northern England.
I think that photo was in our own garden.
Tumblr media
Small Copper (Ycaena phlaeas) photographed at Standen
This little butterfly is commonly found in small numbers in a wide variety of sunny open habitats such as woodland rides, hills, commons and grassy coastal cliff tops.
Small numbers may also be attracted into gardens to nectar on a variety of flowering plants.
The males are restless, highly territorial and easily disturbed.
Both males and females are often seen basking on bare ground and nectaring on a wide variety of flowers such as knotgrass, fleabane, dandelion, buddleias and heathers.
During good summers in the British Isles there may be as many as three generations between April and October, with the last generation overwintering as a caterpillar.
Something I once found at home, which is apparently quite common, but I’ve only ever seen two, is this...
Tumblr media
Aren’t they lovely.
White Ermine Moth (Spilosoma lubricipedia)
you can read about it at the wildlife insight page if you click the bold text above.
Tumblr media
Now, above and below is a real quandary, for me at least. I’m far away from being any kind of bird or nature expert, I just live in the countryside and enjoy looking and learning. This butterfly on my camera roll has completely confounded me. It’s from an old camera back in 2019 and I’m struggling to identify it. I can’t remember taking it or where it may have been, on a local walk by the look of it, but I’ve honestly begun to wonder if I snapped it on the TV or my laptop screen, not that I can think why I’d have done that, but I can’t work it out at all, even searching for orange butterflies and moths worldwide.
Tumblr media
I’ve narrowed down for comparison below, but not found any type of Butterfly with those regular dots on the upper wing like this one. Might it be some kind of Frittillary? No idea, all I know is it has the pearl edging of the Tortoishell and the dark with white patches and some of the round, dark markings of the Painted Lady, I just can’t find a definitive match - not so far anyway.

If anyone can solve my mystery, let me know.

OTHER GARDEN NEWS:
The third nest of House Sparrows has fledged, so the side nest box has gone very quiet, however, the open fronted nest box in the porch has subtle changes in appearance most days
Tumblr media
We heard an awful lot of baby chirping this afternoon, my phone app said House Sparrows, but it was just generic chirping of nestlings I think. We watched for ages but saw no-one. It was hard to tell if the noises came from the box or the shrubbery just around the corner below. Watch this space - TBC.
WHAT MADE ME LAUGH TODAY? an excerpt in the weekly newletter from an author in France
When we first came to France, there were no gates to our garden, anyone could walk in – and they frequently did! One day Mark, my other half, was cutting the grass peacefully on our ride-on mower when a man driving past our house on a ride-on mower took a detour into our garden and started racing my totaly bemused husband. Up and down they went uttering not a word to each other. Le Mans it wasn’t, but they were both in it to win it. They raced with the speed of a pair of determined but geriatric snails, then the mysterious mower pulled away, raised a hand and disappeared back out of the gate.

In urban settings along coastlines around the world, rising seas threaten infrastructure necessary for local jobs and regional industries. Roads, bridges, subways, water supplies, oil and gas wells, power plants, sewage treatment plants, landfills— the list is practically endless — All we are as New Zealanders at risk from sea level rise. This is Wellington with an 80 meter water rise.
** Crazy opening pic of Wellington
Estimates of sea-level rise are extremely complex, but ongoing research and increased understanding is leading many researchers to believe that widely publicized estimates (such as those from IPCC reports*) are far too conservative.
** IPCC flooding pic IPCC - [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change]
Historical evidence suggests that ice sheets may respond to climate changes very rapidly, and recent data show increased rates of melting and growing instability.
** CLIMATE CHANGE
Predicting climate change is phenomenally difficult; we are now well outside the sphere of collective of human experience and expertise. Sea-level rise is happening now, and its rate will likely take us by surprise.
** ST MARKS FLOODED
As the tide draws in, I start to wonder how long it will take until we have no choice but to build over or around the ocean to adapt to the steady rise. I have found that in my past works I have connected with the ‘More than human city’ arena of practice in some of my prior works.
** A Bengalese kiosk in Venice, Italy, with the waters sitting at 156 centimeters. Photo: Nicola Zolin
I plan to delve into potential sites that are suspected to be overwhelmed with the sea levels rising within the Wellington region over the next 100 years, rather than identifying the limitations of this, I wonder how we will adapt to survive the inevitable.
** MYANMAR
Many cities such as Venice, Italy, and Amsterdam, Holland, which are heavily reliant on the water systems and canals within their city, are already redefining new buildings to accommodate
the inevitability of water levels rising due to extreme circumstances. Whereas many Asiatic countries have been preparing for extremes for hundreds of years.
One of the findings in research, published in April last year in leading scientific journal ‘Natural Hazards and Earth Science Systems’, in the article “Spatial and temporal analysis of extreme storm-tide and skew-surge events around the coastline of New Zealand” in which NIWA researchers describe how small increases in sea level rise are likely to drive huge increases in the frequency of coastal flooding in the next 20–30 years.
**
Kraanspoor by OTH Architecten, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Dr Stephens says; “Small sea-level rise increments of 20cm predicted to happen around the New Zealand coast in the next 20 years will drive big increases in the number of times coastal areas are likely to flood. 100 Years from now, there is a one meter rise in sea water if we continue with the same carbon emissions. If we increase these emissions this process is accelerated.
** Climate change implications for New Zealand - April 2016 Te  Aparangi
“Dr Stephens also says it points to the fact that sea-level rise will not necessarily manifest itself as large catastrophic events but will bring more “nuisance” flooding more often,”.
If this continues at this rate however, flash-flooding will destroy the land, then eventually become reclaimed by the ocean.
Subsequently, by 2090 this will likely result in the following;
Higher temperatures may force people to stay indoors, with greater demands for air conditioning, ergo using more electricity during summer.
** TEMPERATURE CARBON EMMISIONS
Denser populations within confined spaces due to water reclaiming the land, further pressuring room for civilians. Despite the exponential growth in population, and decrease in space. Population map **Increase in temperatures, rising sea levels, more extreme weather events and an increase in winter rainfall.
**
More frequent intense winter rainfalls are expected to increase the likelihood of rivers/estuaries nuisance/flash flooding.
Sea levels rising to reclaim the land will put pressure on the space we are able to occupy, cultivate, and power. Resource depletion would eventually stand as a barrier to travel and live within coastal cities such as Wellington, unless we adapt and overcome the inevitably of environmental consequence.
 **
Upon reading ‘Joel Sanders’ Human Nature Landscape/Architecture Divide. I found that there are references to the disregard in forward progression in adapting to the way that the ‘wilderness/nature’ interacts with space. Which is summarized later on in the text as a blatant disregard for the environmental changes occurring around us due to architectural hubris.
The global environmental crisis underscores the imperative for design professionals— architects and landscape architects—to join forces to create integrated designs that address ecological issues.
However, Architecture and landscape architecture have been professionally segregated since at least the late nineteenth century.
The historian William Cronon writes, “If we allow ourselves to believe that nature, to be true, must also be wild, then our very presence in nature represents its fall. The place where we are is the place where nature is not” (Cronon 1996: 80–1)
**
By positing that the human is entirely outside the natural, wilderness presents a fundamental paradox.  As the consequences of our environmental disregard catch up to us, it is important for us to think about how nature will influence our architecture in the near future.
Through Frederick Law Olmsted’s work he betrays the paradoxes at the heart of wilderness thinking. Olmsted fully embraced making nature accessible to urban citizens. Only thirty years later, however, a new generation of landscape architects had lost its way, its efforts stymied by the supposed incompatibility of nature and design.
This intrigues me however, as these works were designed for harmonious purposes rather than necessity. It poses the hypothetical that had we as westerners harnessed the relationship between nature and interior earlier, rather than focusing on the segregation of the two, perhaps we would be in a different circumstance now. Sanders states
**
“sustainable design unwittingly reinforces one root of the problem: the dualistic paradigm of the building as a discrete object spatially, socially, and ecologically divorced from its site. As a consequence, this American ideal—itself derived from wilderness thinking—inhibits designers and manufacturers from treating buildings and landscapes holistically as reciprocal systems that together impact the environment.”
**
McHarg, writing 1969, said Olmsted’s worst predictions had been realized—rapacious capitalism aided by remarkable technological advances had tipped the precarious balance between nature and civilization, resulting in environmental casualties in America’s polluted, slum-ridden cities. McHarg compared city dwellers to “patients in mental hospitals” consigned to live in “God’s Junkyard” (McHarg 1969: 20, 23)
In summation, Sanders remarks: “Relinquishing wilderness values will allow designers to adopt the more complicated viewpoint advanced by progressive scholars and scientists: a recognition that nature and civilization, although not the same, have always been intertwined and are becoming more so. Climate change reveals that there is not a square inch of the planet that does not in some way bear the imprint of humans.”
Through this project I hope to visualize the preparations for environmental extremes in regards to long term environmental changes.

Rays of Sunshine
Like most children, I too am trapped inside the body of someone no longer able to identify as a child. It does mean however, that I still want to climb trees, stick my tongue out and screw up my face after eating disgusting grown up foods like mushrooms or oysters (to be fair I won’t actually go near either), and have a favourite animal. Well, on that last point I have several. Obviously dogs. Especially ones from my past, present and future, as well as every single one I will never meet, and all their canid cousins. Secondly, reptiles. Again this is not restrictive, though if an adult were to ask then I’d say snakes and then fine if pushed, pythons. OK, if you’re really interested, let me get my book of Australian reptiles and I can show you all the ones I’ve seen in the wild since I’ve been ticking them off since I got here. Lastly, rays though specifically this time, the stingray family.
Fortunately, I was spending holidays just after New Year’s at some friends’ house in south-west Western Australia. A stunning property sitting atop 30 acres with an olive grove, fruit trees, a small dam, and enough potential to create quite the permaculture retreat, it’s also nestled just a short drive from each of the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Blackwood River. Two of these supposedly contain at least four species of our stingray family which, in turn, could make me one happy little traveller.
On January 1st, 2005, I landed in Perth, WA, with a mate as we set off on an Australasian adventure from our homes back in Bristol, UK. Our very first week on Aussie soil saw us take a drive into the south-west corner of WA, including a night in Bunbury where we were able to handfeed the resident dolphins. Further down the coast, and following some Lonely Planet advice, we rocked up at a beach called Hamelin Bay. Here, we were advised, one would often see stingrays humbugging the returning fisherman for scraps as the caught haul were prepared in the shadows of what remained of a decaying wooden jetty, once used to service timber milling operations.
In 2005, we were not disappointed. My memory of the entire five week trip largely following the urban coastal part of this isle is somewhat hazy. Not through any drink or drug induced haze but merely through my own inability to remember anything other than that which may crop up during a round of Jeopardy. However, my one crystal clear memory is of stroking these huge cartilaginous cousins of sharks in the lapping shoreline of the tranquil Indian Ocean (pic below).
Tumblr media
It was another thirteen years until I saw another in the wild. This was during a free diving adventure off the coast of Bali, involved the largest of the stingray family, the manta ray, and can be read about in a previous blog ‘Among the Fields of Bali’. Three years further along and I’m back at Hamelin Bay, just a ten minute drive from my friends’ house and almost just as I remember it.
The friends have an eleven month old son and it was he we were entertaining with an evening dip at the beach. I spent the appropriate amount of time pretending not to be excited about being back at Stingray City before getting unnecessarily excited about being back at Stingray City. To mask my inner stan, I casually sauntered towards the boat ramp and beyond, the dilapidated pillars of the jetty to find… nothing. Nada, zilch, squat. Natch. Uh oh. Upon my return to my friends I was informed that some rays had been brutally butchered by a few callous locals a few years ago. Unprotected as they were, they were fair game for a ‘catch’ and the laws insufficient for those actions to be classed as illegal. Now, the shoreline is a protected zone for the rays however, it seemed that they had not yet returned. I left deflated.
A day or two later I was in the township of Augusta which sits just up from the estuary of the Blackwood River before it empties into the Southern Ocean and is also just a ten minute drive from my holiday basecamp. Along the riverbank sit numerous cleaning stations. These are small, wooden structures utilised for the cleaning and filleting of caught fish before they’re thrown onto a barbecue at the campground behind for the freshest of feeds. The resident rays are wise to the process and loiter when someone is nearby. Here I was able to amble among eagle rays and spotted rays. If no scraps are on offer, the rays will nudge into you like a hungry puppy and loiter at your feet expectantly. I spent too many hours across a few days paddling with, and photographing these rays. In the absence of the Indian Ocean mob, I was delighted to be entertained by half a dozen or so of these wee fellas, but it wasn’t the same.
Tumblr media
A week later, I returned alone to Hamelin Bay and trundled down to the shore to reminisce. It was sixteen years to the day when I was there earlier this trip. Now, these seven days on, I was enjoying the twilight views and a cooling ocean breeze in ankle deep water. From the corner of one eye, a dark shadow caught my attention. Watching carefully, is it a rock? Are the gentle undulations of the tide suggesting underwater movement where none exists? Perhaps it’s just a mass of seaweed. And then, a turn! A tail flicks behind it as the shadow nears. A ray is back! It turns out they didn’t disappear. My attendance earlier just unfortunate timing. On this occasion I counted a dozen or so patrolling the shoreline, a mix of black and silky stingrays. As more onlookers arrived, the rays approached, seeking the scraps they are so often presented. Considerably larger than their freshwater brethren, they are just as demanding nudging the calves and resting above feet awaiting their feed. They are rewarded often enough though are unable to distinguish between the mass of legs as to who may be a provider. It can be a surreal thirty seconds or so feeling the sand move between the toes as a result of the ray drawing water through its mouth an inch from your foot and out through the gills where gas exchange occurs, before the ray loses patience and moves onto the next grounded limb.
Tumblr media
I returned one further time, on my last evening in the region, to wander among these graceful beauties. Sitting on the beach after my final frolic and staring out across the Western Australian horizon, I was a pretty content human. The inner child had been allowed out to play for a fortnight and is delighted to announce that his favourite animal is now the stingray. Well, at least until someone lets me pet their dog.

Seven Things You Most Likely Didn’t Know About Seascape Art | seascape art
Sunday, 17th May 2020, 6:01 pm
In January, the Crinan-based artisan and sailor Ross Ryan acquaint a video on YouTube advantaged “Another Windy Day.” First, it shows him angry a actual large, actual adjustable allotment of lath beyond a asphalt bank in a bawl gale, the wind about abduction the ambitious canvas out of his easily as he nears the water’s edge. Then, afterwards he’s managed to get the lath beneath control, we see him adequate a bleared cup of coffee while after-effects backfire adjoin adjacent rocks, and flecks of cream aerated up by the sea draft beyond his completed painting like so abounding hailstones.
Anyone who bent Ryan’s aftermost exhibition at the Scottish Arcade in Edinburgh in 2018 will be acquainted of his charge to creating assignment in the accessible air, no amount how atoning the conditions. Displayed alongside the paintings in The Logbook – A Abandoned Winter Voyage, there was a atramentous and white photograph of the artisan at assignment on the accouter of his board 1940s herring baiter Sgarbh, braced, anticipation by the crazy angles, for some austere casting and rolling. Abundant of the assignment in the appearance bore traces of accepting been credible to the elements, too. Painters of seascapes about chafe or scumble their assignment to accord the consequence of abundant weather, but if one of Ryan’s canvases looks as if it’s been aged by a Force 9, affairs are it apparently has.
This ages Ryan was declared to accept addition abandoned appearance at the Scottish Gallery, this one advantaged The Logbook Vol.2 – Batten Bottomward the Hatches. Thanks to Covid-19, however, hatches accept now been battened bottomward all about the apple and the arcade has been affected to abutting for the aboriginal time in its 178 year history, so the exhibition is abandoned accessible to appearance online. There is still affluence of evidence, however, that he has been continuing his access-all-elements access to painting on his best contempo west bank voyages. The description in the exhibition archive of his campaign to acrylic the Stevenson Light on Dubh Artach, off the north-western tip of Colonsay, gives a acceptable adumbration of the lengths he’s able to go to in adjustment to actualize assignment in the moment:
“With the cool rolling us excessively, anchoring was out of the question, as was authoritative a landing. Soon it became credible that the abandoned way to accumulate her abiding was to beef boring

Previous Minute Canal Boat Holidays, Discount Narrowboat Hire
Munich-based mostly, luxurious magazine Käfer - Die Zeitung” describes how RAND Boats combines sustainable materials, elegant design and high usability.
Tumblr media
We own and operate the largest and most fashionable fleet of self-drive cruisers on Europe's waterways. Glorious standards of customer support, help and cleanliness include all of Le Boat's canal cruisers. My children tend to get seasick if they keep below after we are crusing, so mostly they play within the cockpit. With the kind of sailing I do (largely day sails, the occasional weekend trip) nobody wants to must cook dinner and clear up on the boat. With the age of your children, one of you'll most certainly be watching the youngsters, and the other can be sailing the boat. Anyway, here are my particular comemnts relating to a boat appropriate for family cruising: My family and I started sailing in the summer of 2003. All this put collectively (together with the above quotations ) if it falls inside the finances, I'd say that the new Najad 38 or the new Halberg-Rassy 37 are obvious selections as (small) family boats. http://allaboutkim.com/category/information/ .g. a mainsheet traveller bisecting & spanning the cockpit, typically discovered on boats set up to race, is just an impediment and tripping hazard to young kids desirous to spread out their toys." "Today virtually the smallest boats have strain water and so the water tankage must be fairly massive." They are very slick boats, fairly quick in accordance with the Yachtmasters that supervise the novice crews, and with flexible rigs. You're basically going to be coastal cruisers so you may tolerate a wider range of construct quality. The term ''easy'' is a little misleading because it sometimes takes extra difficult sail handling gear to make a boat easy to handle. At the moment almost the smallest boats have stress water and so the water tankage must be fairly massive. Family cruisers bring along thier personal set of compromises. What makes a very good family cruiser boat? This 45-foot ketch (two masts, aft mast in entrance of rudder) is a modern interpretation of a traditional design by legendary sailboat designers Sparkman & Stephens, rendered with fashionable supplies. To recap, the optimum boat has less than 19 feet of overhead clearance, lower than 6 ft of draft beneath and a cruising vary of 500 miles. For that cause, sailboats usually are not optimum Loop boats, although many sailors drop their masts and either carry them onboard or ship them to be picked up down the best way. The beautiful Fleming 65, with a cruising speed of 15 knots, has three staterooms and three heads, an enclosed pilothouse and an open flybridge. So consensus didn't come simply, but after a heated discussion and some more beers, we agreed that few skilled cruising sailboaters would argue against the following requirements: Such tiresome vessels, despite every other fantastic attributes they could have, are the antithesis of good cruising boats. Poor sail trim contributes enormously to poor dealing with in fact, however some sailboats defy all makes an attempt to get them to handle in an acceptable method.

Introducing – Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition, Now in Steel (Live Pics & Price)
The figures speak for themselves: over the last 30 years, scientists calculate that 50% of the world’s coral reefs have died and without direct action could be extinct in 80 years. Coral reefs are now the most endangered ecosystems on the planet and their extinction would mark the first time humanity has faced the loss of an entire ecosystem. The upside of these gloomy facts is that coral can be saved. Oris has taken a special interest in different foundations that are restoring the life of coral reefs by allocating a percentage of sales generated with these limited edition watches. Last year, Oris supported the Reef Restoration Foundation with the Great Barrier Reef watch. The partnership with Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) dates back to 2014. This year, Oris renews its commitment to CRF and in January 2020 released the Carysfort Reef Limited Edition, the brand’s first watch in solid gold. Today, a second Carysfort Reed model is released in stainless steel. The watch is a limited edition of 2,000 pieces and, like the gold model, is based on the robust Aquis GMT diver with specific design features to celebrate its commitment to CRF.
Oris and the ocean
With its reputation for practical underwater tool watches, Oris has embarked on a mission to raise funds and create awareness for different environmental projects related to our oceans and freshwater lakes. In the past year alone we’ve seen editions like the Oris Ocean Trilogy, the “Clean Ocean” Edition to support the removal of plastic from the sea and even the Lake Baikal model to improve the health of the world’s largest freshwater lake on Earth.
Coral reefs
Coral reefs have been around for 500 million years but they could disappear by the end of this century. Currently the most threatened habitat on Earth, coral reefs are the backbone of life in the oceans. Corals are sometimes mistaken as rocks or as plants. However, corals are classified as animals and use their small tentacles to capture their food from the water although they also obtain energy from photosynthesis – which explains why they live in shallow waters. Corals are made up of millions of tiny soft-bodied polyps that secrete a hard outer skeleton of limestone and attach themselves to the seabed. Coral reefs are not just vital ecosystems, they protect coastal areas by reducing the power of waves and provide habitats and support for 25% of all marine fish species. When corals are stressed by rising ocean temperatures and acidification, they turn white. This phenomenon is known as coral bleaching and can kill entire coral reefs. Not only does this affect the life of marine species, it affects all of us because corals keep oceans healthy and oceans produce 70% of the world’s oxygen.
The prospect of seeing yet another species go the way of the dinosaur prompted the creation of Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF). Based in Key Largo, Florida, CRF’s mission is to reverse the damage done to the Florida Reef Tract. The foundation grows corals in an offshore nursery and then ‘outplants’ them in selected sites. One reef in particular, the Carysfort reef, has been singled out for the latest Oris watch. According to  Martha Roesler, chief development officer at CRF, Carysfort reef was a popular spot for the early recreational dive industry and is where the world’s first underwater colour photograph was taken.  To date, the CRF has repopulated the Carysfort reef with 25,000 corals and should reach 30,000 by the end of 2020.
The Carysfort Reef watch
The Oris Carysfort Reef is based on the Aquis GMT, a robust diver for travellers introduced in 2019 and the first Aquis to appear with a GMT complication that can track up to three different time zones. The regular Aquis GMT collection has a predominantly black and blue colour scheme; the Craysfort Reef is also black and blue, but with a lighter blue dial and a two-tone bezel.
The steel case has a diameter of 43.5mm (50mm lug-to-lug and 14mm thick) and features brushed and polished finishes. The notched two-tone black and blue ceramic insert on the bezel, first seen on the gold model released in January, has a laser-engraved 24-hour scale filled in white. Like a day/night indicator, the black corresponds to night-time hours and the blue for daytime.
Unlike the regular Aquis GMT models in the collection, the Craysfort Reef has an orange triangle at 12 o’clock to house the luminous dot, a colour scheme that is echoed on other details of the dial. Protected with crown guards, the crown is screwed down and the caseback sealed to offer water-resistance of 300 metres.
The dial is also different from regular Aquis GMT and flaunts a blue gradient dial evoking the shallow waters that are home to Florida’s coral. Another difference is the slightly recessed and snailed 24-hour GMT scale, which is now represented with a combination of white (19-5) and orange (7-18) numerals to match the central orange GMT hand and the GMT inscription on the dial. Plenty of luminescent material, painted on all the four central hands (hours, minutes, GMT and seconds) and on the indices, makes reading the watch underwater or at night a cinch.
The three possible time zones readings function as follows: local time can be set using the standard hour hand; home time using the central GMT hand with the orange tip; and a third time zone using the bidirectional GMT bezel in combination with the GMT hand. There is also a date window at 3 o’clock.
Oris Calibre 798
The screwed caseback is decorated with an engraving of coral specimens found in Carysfort Reef along with the limited edition number 0000/2000. Inside is calibre 798, an automatic movement beating at 28,8000vph with a 42-hour power reserve based on the well-known Sellita SW 330-1.
Price and availability
The Oris Craysfort Reef is limited to 2,000 pieces and comes in special box made from sustainable algae. The watch can be ordered with a stainless steel bracelet or an orange rubber strap, both with a steel security folding clasp with an extension system. The watch is now available and retail prices are as follows: CHF 2,700 for the model with a steel bracelet, CHF 2,500 with a rubber strap.

After flirting with touching the East Coast for nearly four days, Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the United States at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on Friday morning as a Category 1 hurricane.Landfall came around 8:35 a.m., EDT, Friday with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and a minimum central pressure of 28.23 inches of Mercury (956 millibars). This is a far cry from when it made landfall in the Bahamas as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph and a minimum pressure of 26.87 inches of Mercury (910 millibars).Despite being a shell of its former self, Dorian still brought damaging winds and inundating storm surge along the coast, particularly along the Outer Banks in North Carolina."There is significant concern about hundreds of people trapped on Okracoke Island," North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced in a press conference on Friday morning.Unconfirmed totals place the number of people trapped on Ocracoke Island at around 800, according to the Charlotte Observer. There was a rapid spike in the water level on Ocracoke Island as storm surge piled up off the Pamlico Sound. The water level on the sound jumped over six feet in less than two hours on Friday morning, prompting a flash flood emergency. This was the second highest water level on record at the Pamlico Sound, behind water levels during Hurricane Michael in 2016. This left Ocracoke only accessible only by boat or by air."This latest development shows that we cannot let our guard down," Cooper said. "For the Outer Banks and northeastern North Carolina, continue to shelter in a safe place, keep off the roads and stay alert."Power outages surged in coastal areas as Dorian pelted the coast of the Carolinas with wind-whipped rain. The number of power outages across the Carolinas on Thursday evening approached 300,000 but have since gone down. However, Ocracoke Island remains without power, according to Cooper. As of Saturday morning, 63,000 people were still without power, mostly in North Carolina. "The storm has left behind destruction. Storm surge inundated Ocracoke Island," Cooper said. "Currently, the island has no electricity and many homes and buildings are still underwater. Communications experts, law enforcement and a medical strike team have been transported there and a search and rescue team is on the way."> Ocracoke Island now. Crews were transporting residents to a nearby storm shelter until conditions improve and they can return home. The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced on Friday that NC12 was closed due to the flooding and that travel on Ocracoke and Hatteras was "extremely dangerous at this point."The top U.S. wind gust reports came from the coasts of the Carolinas. At Cape Lookout, North Carolina, one of the possible areas meteorologists had thought Dorian could make landfall, wind gusts were measured at 94 mph. As of Friday afternoon, there have been five Dorian-related deaths on U.S. soil, three in Florida and two in North Carolina. All five died while preparing for the storm. In North Carolina, an 85-year-old man fell off a ladder while preparing his house for the storm, and the Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis said the second North Carolina victim had had a heart attack while pulling his boat out of the water, according to WITN.Areas impacted by the historic hurricane can expect dry, settled weather in the wake of Dorian, allowing flood waters to recede and cleanup efforts to begin. However, some areas could experience record-challenging heat. This may become an issue for those still left without power in the wake of the storm.Meanwhile, those in Atlantic Canada are bracing for a direct hit by Dorian as it races northward.
