100 Days of Writing

[Day 15] Does your WIP have fairytales? Do your characters tell mythical stories to each other?

Another unique question from @the-wip-project! One of my original WIPs actually is a fairy tale!

Modern-day setting, a friendship group of very diverse characters, a mystery, and it all started from one of the most unique and captivating prompts I’ve ever seen.

I got about two pages in - not even a full chapter - and the whole thing ground to a screeching halt because my poor white, cishet heart chickened out.

See, I’m white, but I had some unique experiences growing up that shaped my worldview a little differently. I spent several formative years overseas, in countries where white people were the minority. What’s more, the few white people I did hang out with had also spent a lot of formative time in white-minority countries. Most of them spoke languages like Arabic, Farsi, Mandarin, and Greek. When I was forming my first real impressions of political and social systems, I was a white person living among and in deference to POC. By in deference, I mean that I learned their language, I didn’t expect to be catered to in English. My first boss, my teachers, nearly all authority figures, were BIPOC.

Then I moved back to Canada. My brother met and married a woman from Thailand and they had a son. My first boyfriend was Métis. My second boyfriend was Chinese. Then I married my next boyfriend, who does happen to be white. So my kids are blond haired and blue-eyed. When my parents, my kids and the two of us sit down for a Sunday dinner, we look like a Norman Rockwell painting.

We live in one of the most diverse areas of an already metropolitan kind of city… the kind where you can walk down a street and pass an Ethiopian restaurant, a Punjabi sweet shop, a British imported grocery store, and a Malaysian restaurant all in a row. My kids go to a school that is minority-white, which is rare for even this area, but we feel perfectly at home there. My daughter was the only white student in her kindergarten class, and she would come home and lament that she wished she could speak Mandarin or Cantonese or Korean or … and she would say her hair wasn’t nice… she envied the tight curls or long shiny black hair of the other girls in her class. I remember comforting her and thinking what a trip it was that she is getting this experience right here in our white-majority country. How many other little girls have cried into their pillows, wishing they looked like ‘the other girls’ in their class? Now my daughter has that empathy built in already!

We may be a mostly white family, but most of our friends from work, the kids’ school, and life-long friends are actually BIPOC.

So I didn’t think anything of it when my cast of characters for this modern-day fairy tale story showed up in my head, all excited about this discovery they’d made. They made sense to me. Each one reminds me of someone I actually was/am close to in real life. But then… I shared some of it on a forum and got absolutely blasted because I apparently have no business writing BIPOC characters if I’m white.

But it feels so illogical… I’m supposed to write from experience, right? Well, it’s literally my experience that from that age of 14 until now, if I sat down at a table in a school cafeteria, a popular coffee shop, the bus, an event at my kids’ school, I would literally be looking around at faces that don’t look anything like mine, and there would be several languages being spoken, some of which I actually understand because of exposure. That’s normal to me. I’m not making up something I’ve never seen before, this is my actual experience.

I’ve gotten the same thing about writing LGBTQIA+ characters as a cishet, straight (I guess?) woman. But I’ve been so blessed to be close to people in that community! I was close to a woman I worked with for years who was trans, I have a very young cousin who just came out as trans last year, my nephew is gay, and I’m like… so I really have to make my stories white, cishet and straight, because that’s what I am? Even if I once walked into an all-white church in Texas and couldn’t even stay for the service because it felt so unbelievably weird and uncomfortable? Even if the very first time I got to console a heartbroken niece or nephew, it was a same-sex relationship?

I get that so much of representation in fiction is actually really problematic and even toxic… but I can’t see how the answer to that is more stories that look like the cast of “Friends”, which struck me as bizarre even when it was running. I can’t see how me writing a white character who only knows white people is remotely helpful, especially since I literally would need to research what that’s like. What the hell would that be like? Ugh! Not a story I want to write, that’s for sure!

So the fairy tale I would love, love, love to write is on hiatus for a while until I figure it out. No way do I want to risk harming or offending people. But there’s also no way I can write all those teenagers as white and straight, because they just aren’t, okay?

And that’s my rant for the day… if you read the whole thing, you’re a sweetheart and I love you.

We were wondering whether to have breakfast in the hotel or go to Vishal’s, at 10 am we decided to go towards his place but he met us in between and all of us walked down.

Vishal had messaged me last night that there was a surprise for us. So I asked him but he was just smiling. We started walking down towards Dharamsala, Bhim and I were like as long as it’s a descent its fine with us. We were exhausted by now with the long journey we had these past few weeks.

Vishal, Bhim and I were waiting near a point for a bus. He pointed out to one old temple that was hundreds of years old and said we could trek there today. We were very tired but we also thought why not? I asked Vishal when is the bus coming as it seemed like a bus stand. After some time right in front of us, a big car stopped.This was the surprise! Vishal booked the car for an entire day for sightseeing Dharamsala! This was his gift!

We were completely taken aback by his generosity! The driver was his friend but am sure he paid for the entire day. Bhim and I were like Vishal what did you do?? Why did you spend so much money? Vishal said Listen just accept this gift of mine. I wanted you to enjoy Dharamsala without having to walk or take buses. We were overwhelmed.

We three sat comfortably in the car while Vishal told the guy to take us first to Tibetan Library Archives. This was a big complex by itself and impressive. The Dalai Lama when he made that great escape from Tibet, carried ancient manuscripts, books with him, the Tibetan people too procured as much as they could while escaping because this was their culture and history, they had to save it. The Chinese destroyed everything else.

The archives was impressive with a short tour of the museum. Every monastery if you look at it was constructed as a ‘ Mandala’. The altar was ‘ Nirvana’- Enlightment or as we know it, ‘Moksha’ and to reach that, a human had to resist and overcome many obstacles, all within us. Temptation, greed, anger, attachments. Bhim explainer this to us and commented how similar it was to Hinduism.

There was constant restoration work happening preserving the old manuscripts written thousands of years ago. Right from clothes to different tribes, to their way of living before China’s invasion was depicted in miniatures. The educational institution was here. One of the staff members said they were building a massive complex- a learning centre with arts and aesthetics outside Bangalore. Dharamsala was too small to host programs for students coming from all over the world.

It was a beautiful drizzly afternoon with mist when we walked into the monastery in the complex. Serene and quiet. How devastating it will be if we were told one day that your language, your way of life, your religion must not exist and it’s only our way you should follow and that’s exactly what China did.

It was lunch time and we were famished, Vishal took us to a nice Punjabi Dhaba, more like a small restaurant. We hogged on Parathas and Paneer. Vishal seemed quiet and lost in thoughts on and off.

Then he took us to this old temple. It was a Shiva temple but patronised by an old saint whose photo was in the main temple. Up in the hills, one could even trek to this place. It was still drizzling and the path to it was lush green blooming with wild flowers. He showed us the original old temple that stood serene in its isolation. One could get a vantage view of Dharamsala, Bhim pointed out to the massive sports stadium. It stood out.

There was a beautiful silence to the place. We saw an old dog sitting and staring at the main altar with Shiva Linga. It was a beautiful moment.

Bhim was wandering about while I walked with Vishal. He softly told me that he became quiet suddenly thinking of his father. That pang, that loss came in spurts, that void, that memory. My eyes welled up when he said ‘Aap samaj sakte ho na, aapke maata pitha ki bahut yaad aati hogi’( You understand this, you think of your mother and father a lot right?) How could I not? I had that rare circumstance of being an only child and losing both my parents when I was young.

The old dog was whining with hunger, he seemed to belong to the temple and Vishal packed Roti and vegetables so we gave it to the old guy. Even here no one seemed to mind a dog inside the temple, it was as natural as it should be. We are all created as one, aren’t we?

We made our way out and as I looked back I saw the dog looking at us, regal with that stare. I am sure we crossed paths in our previous lives..

The drive was beautiful with the rains. Bhim was sitting in the front with the driver while Vishal and I sat at the back chatting. Old hindi songs were playing in the car and we were singing out loud.

The next stop was the Aghanjar Mahadev – Shiva temple. It was said that Arjuna- one of the Pandava brothers did a penance right here and Lord Shiva gave him the most powerful Astra( Weapon) – ‘Mahapasupatha Astra’. The temple domes were a beautiful bauxite red in colour and the rains added a magnificence to it. It was so quiet again we felt blessed.

Bhim had gone down, slippery steps down where the gushing river was flowing and right below was the small cave, where the old Shiva linga was worshipped. The cave was very narrow so one had to go flat and slide inside it with great difficulty.

We sat there on the rocks looking at it all. This was sheer bliss. The gushing flowing water that was light blue. There was a small bridge up ahead with lush greenery, it was magical. I closed my eyes and listened in. As we were about to walk out, Bhim splashed water hard on my face and ran laughing! We started playing around. By the way my turn is still pending, to do that to him and it will happen on our next travel! 😈

It was time for Chai and pakodas so right outside the temple, we stopped at a small chai shop. Sitting under the trees, a slight drizzle we had hot delicious pakodas and chai! This was sheer pampering. We fed the remaining tiffin Vishal carried to a cute friendly dog hanging out with us. She was an adorable girl.

We visited the Gyuto Tantric Monastery temple. This one primarily focused on Tantric studies. Before anyone comes to a conclusion, let me tell you Tantra is a vast subject and there are different schools. Tantra in Buddhism and Hinduism is completely different unfortunately the Western school of thought took only one aspect of it, the erotic part and completely twisted it. I remembered coming here in 2017 and attending morning prayers thanks to a senior Lama I had met, Geshe Lobsang.

The last stop was the famous Norbulingka temple. You would think you were in some exotic place in the far east. Architecturally very beautiful filled with lush greenery, koi pond with fish, very Zen energy. It was 5.30 pm so the temple was closed with very few visitors.

The colours of green red and gold beautifully combined in their architecture. There was a wood workshop with young Tibetans carving idols,mandalas out of wood. Each one very engrossed with their work playing their own music in the background. From hard rock music to new Bollywood songs 😊

We were going back towards Mcleodganj and it was an eventful day and I felt truly special for what Vishal did today. How often do we get that genuine care and attention? This was a gift I would cherish for a long time to come.

On the way Vishal saw a guy walking up with groceries and he stopped to give him a ride. A young saintly looking guy, he was from Calcutta and was living in Mcleodganj for almost 8 months now sometimes working as a massage therapist. Soft spoken, gentle with a lilting voice.

We finally reached Vishal’s shop, ‘ Shankar Chaat Bhandar’ and our man washes his hands and directly gets to work. We spent time there eating our dinner while his big brother regaled us stories about his last trip to Pune to visit his son and how he hated the food there😊

It was time to call it a night. Vishal would stay until the shop closed around 9.30 pm. We told him we would meet him before we left. Tomorrow we would be out of Dharamsala..

When I think of it now, what Vishal did for us was priceless, more than any gift we would have got even from our own family. He gave us his time, affection and he took care of us, who does that nowadays.

It was back to the room and the lights of Mcleodganj hills. To be continued..

After my long train ride and the hella bumpy ride to my first location my neck has been too stiff to look down, or side to side. It was getting better, and each day I can move a little more.

This morning I was out the door by 6:30 and went to a 24 hour Punjabi restaurant and ordered something they were out of so I took the first thing on the menu. It’s on the Hooghly river, and boasts that it is a part of the Ganges. I looked at the map and it looks like the Ganges ends and this is an off shoot of it. There are people doing full prostrations and people mumbling prayers and bells ringing. I find a spot on the rug and sit there with my eyes closed for about 30 minutes until I hear them close the doors on RK’s window. After that I tour the campus and look into the preserved room where Vivekananda stayed. There are a few more places to check out here, and then another ghat around the corner so I walk there barefoot and come back to the gift shop. After buying a book I get my sandals and pay 1 rupee to use the urinal. Then my Uber arrives and he doesn’t know how to get to my hotel or speak english so he pulls over every 10 mins to ask people. Eventually when I know where we are I tell him how to get there, and eventually I give up and walk the rest of the way.

Today was the first time a young woman beggar with her baby and little kid harassed me for some time. they followed me down the street as she tugged on my shirt putting hand to mouth and pointing to the kid.

The last couple of days I’ve done a lot of touristy stuff. Visiting the Victoria Memorial was probably the most impressive. Lots of paintings from the 1700’s and 1800’s by Thomas Daniell. And a second story that circles the whole place, all made of marble. No photographs allowed just like the RK temple. (I snuck one at each) There were photographs of Kolkata from the 1800’s and it really looks like India hasn’t changed much since. Any old part of this city has decaying buildings and ancient doorways. Most of which have tree roots growing all over them. Without any maintenance nature is swallowing this old city whole, even if they continue to battle back with burning coals.

On almost every street here there is a well where you can wash your feet, brush your teeth, fill up jugs or even take a bath. That didn’t happen in Mumbai. Also I’ve noticed some crafty ways of lighting cigarettes. In Mumbai there was either a lighter on a string or even a coil with a light switch next to the guy that sells single smokes. You turn it on and put your face to it. Here I saw a burning rope like a fuse that people light their cigarettes from!

At this point I’m pretty tired of walking. I get some tasty street food and sit on a bench among 50 other guys and girls. Then check out some sunglasses for sale. The guy at the stall couldn’t communicate so someone helped us out. Then invited me to see his shop. I’d heard horror stories about this kind of offer but I went anyway. We walked a while along the same street and talked about Kolkata and Canada. After we went down a narrow ally full of shops he opened the door of his place. His name is Shak and he collects antiques. Some beautiful compasses and carved ivory elephants and all the usual stuff you’d imagine to find in India. We went up stairs to look at kurtas and had a nice conversation. I asked where to find white underwear since they seem to be unavailable. And my dark blue undies stick out under my white clothes. He took the liberty of showing me his own white underwear very carefully undoing his belt and asking me if that kind is what I was looking for…Strange but true. After that I paid the foreigner fee for the Indian Museum of 500 rupees. Indians pay 20 I think. It has a courtyard in the middle and all sorts of exhibits. A big Buddhist exhibit and an Egypt one stood out to me, they had two real mummies. On to Gallery 88 where I saw an Indian photographers work. And two visits to the post office. The second time I went to send post cards I told them I had put the first batch in a bin outside and they said I shouldn’t have done that and the postcards may or may not arrive…

LMAO, if anything, everything sounds EVEN MORE EXTRA in Kannada? Kannada just sounds like a very dramatic language to me. (like Telugu and Punjabi. Everything seems x100 in these languages to me.)

I really like the actor they chose for Om’s character - he seems to have that soft and gentle artist vibe down pat.

To a lesser extent, the Shivaay actor. He doesn’t seem to exude the menace and terror that Nakuul did as SSO. He’s waaaaaay less intense. But that could be a good thing, considering how annoying and extra Shivaay is at the start of the show. Overall, still like him; he made a good first impression on me.

I don’t like the Rudra actor. He looks the same age, if not older than the other guys? Meh.

The chemistry between the three brothers has to be the biggest draw of the show, like it is for IB. Wonder if they will manage to accomplish it. Hard to tell from that 2 second snippet at the end of Promo 1.

I do nottttttttt like the Anika/Ishta actress AT ALL. Something about her is just rubbing me the wrong way. Surbhi has set veryyyyyy high standards for this character in my mind, and… this girl isn’t cutting it.

Production values seem relatively high. But then, promos can be misleading. The promos before launch for IB have a decidedly different feel from what the show actually turned out to be, about 50 episodes in.

What I’m reallllllly interested in: how they’ll approach the things they messed up in IB - the Ishaana track, the Sumo track, Roop Bua/Gayatri plot, DBO divergence etc. Will the remake learn from the mistakes of the original and actually do a better job of addressing those plot points?
