Tech friends, I need your help.

I'm choosing between 2 laptops to buy. We'll call them laptop 1 and 2, for the sake of simplicity. (I'm in no hurry to buy one, mine works... just fine... but not great. It struggles when I have too many tabs open in Chrome, and is lagging as I write this post with literally only Discord open in the background. I'm sure you can imagine how it handles any heavier program. Yes I made a mistake by cheaping out when I could afford better, yes I am aware of this, yes I regret it deeply, let's move on.)

Laptop 1 is about 100 dollars/euros/1000 SEK cheaper.

They both have OLED screens with approximately the screen resolution: laptop 1 has a 15.6" display with 2880 x 1620 resolution (16:9) and laptop 2 has a 14" display with 2880 x 1800 resolution (16:10). My current laptop has a 14" display with 1920 x 1080 resolution (16:9) so either way it's a pretty big upgrade. In terms of size alone, I prefer the 15.6". (Laptop 1 weighs 1.8kg and laptop 2 weighs 1.45kg, which is not enough of a difference that it really matters to me.)

Laptop 1 has a higher refresh rate (120Hz vs 90Hz on laptop 2).

Their processors are both AMD Ryzen 7s (8 cores, 16 threads, 16GB RAM) with equal base clock speed (3.2GHz), but laptop 1 has a Ryzen 7 5800H while laptop 2 has a Ryzen 7 6800H. The two processors use different RAM types (5800H uses DDR4 RAM & 6800H uses LPDDR5 SDRAM (though it is fully possible that the 5800H also uses SDRAM and the sites I'm looking at just aren't telling me)). 5800H has a higher peak temperature (105 Celsius vs. 95 Celsius). The 6800H has a higher turbo clock speed (4.7GHz vs. 4.4GHz).

They both have the same graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050), they both ship with Windows 11, and they both have 1TB of storage space.

Ultimately, I think the main question is whether laptop 2's better processor makes a big enough difference that it negates laptop 1's comfort of a bigger display and justifies the price difference despite it being smaller... and I do not know enough about laptops to make the call there.

("Build your own PC" and "buy a desktop PC" are both advice I will not take because I do not own or have space for a desk.)

(They're both Asus Vivobook Pro OLEDs: laptop 1 is M6500QC-MA025W and laptop 2 is M6400RC-KM001W, and more specifically, they cost 15990 SEK and 16990 SEK. My current laptop is also an ASUS Vivobook but I don't even think they make it anymore because it's so bad. It has a 2-core Ryzen 3 processor and 128GB of storage space.)

Obsidian.md - A software recommendation for Fanfic Writers

Hi everyone! So I know a lot of people like Notion and google docs and all that jazz, but I'd like to recommend new-ish software that would work really good for fanfiction writers and world-builders.

It's called Obsidian and it is great!

(ID: a screenshot depicting Obsidian.md's functionality on both mobile and desktop. It looks like a writing software that has multiple folders and note taking functions, along with a graph.)

Reasons why I recommend it:

It's entirely file-based, meaning that all your content stays on your computer, or even in your cloud storage if you choose to put it in that dropbox folder. This also means that you do not have to rely on the internet for accessing your fanfics. It's also super duper fast!

There are multiple community themes and plugins to make it more accessible, aesthetically pleasing, and overall easier to use. If markdown intimidates you, why not just right click and choose the bold button? There's a plugin for that. If you're coming from Notion---there's a plugin to make it more akin to Notion, too. Want it to look like a word processor? Surprise, there's a plugin for a toolbar that will appear at the top of your screen, akin to Word or Google Ddocs.

There's a very intricate mindmapping function that lets you incorporate notes. For example, if you want to put an entire note into a mindmap that upon clicking would let you open up a new page, that's a thing it does. It's called "Canvas!" and it comes with Obsidian.

There's a Daily Note function that you can use to make whatever template you want appear upon opening the software, or upon clicking a button. For example, if you want to get into a daily morning journal habit, it'll work great.

All of this is free!!!!!

I really recommend giving it a shot!! It's my favorite software I use on a daily basis for things that involve writing. I'm currently using it for art notes, fanfiction, journals, goal setting, so forth. It's very easy to use despite how it looks at first!

How to Use a Computer, Part 5-B: Really How to Install Games from Disc Media

Last time, I explained about Microsoft refusing to recognise Safedisc and SecuROM games. I accidentally made it sound like ALL game software that was ever released on discs wouldn't work anymore. That was my error. SecuROM was already an antique by the time Microsoft got round to ending support for it, so there's actually quite a lot of games on disc that weren't affected by that. Let's quit talking about arcane technical issues and get down to the practical stuff, shall we?

There really isn't much to say about running games from disc. Like all software, it needs to install onto your computer first; the only difference is that the game uses a disc, either CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, to install the software, rather than an internet-based download service.

To begin, open your optical drive (OD) and put Disc 1 of the software you wish to install into the drive. If there is only one disc, that'll save you the step of changing out discs. Close the OD and wait for Windows to ask you what you want to do with the disc. Select "Run". It might say "Run Setup.exe", "Run AutoPlay.exe", or something else germane to running the installer contained on the disc. Whatever the "Run" option is, select it.

The Installer prompt will ask you to choose a file directory to install the software into. It will already have a selection made, so you won't have to worry about it. Really, there's no need to install software to a location other than the one given by the installer, unless you have a special hard drive or disk partition specifically for games. You probably don't so just let the installer put it where it wants to.

Let's look at the directory for second, though; because you'll probably use that to install mods. Let's take The Sims Complete Collection (EA, 2005) as an example. The directory the installer will put the game in is this...

C:/Program Files (x86)/Maxis/The Sims Complete Collection

This means the game will install on your main hard drive (drive C), into the root program files directory for 32-bit software (x86 and derivative CPUs were 32-bit processors, hence Program Files x86). In the 32-bit program files directory, it will use the folder for Maxis games (the game's original developer) and create a subfolder specifically for The Sims Complete Collection. It does this in order to prevent conflicts with any other games that might be in the Maxis folder, either now or in the future; say, if you were to install SimCity 4. Every file that TSCC's install discs put onto your computer will end up in this file directory only, with the exception of a desktop shortcut and a shortcut in your Start menu.

Some games, especially newer ones (2009-present) will also create user data folders in your Documents or User folders, apart from installing the game to C:/Program Files. In this case, mods will typically go in this user data folder instead of the root directory.

Getting back to the disc. When the installer prompts you for the next disc in the series, re-open your OD, remove the first disc and insert the second one; then shut the OD and click "OK" on the prompt. Repeat this process for disc 3, disc 4, and onwards. Once all the discs have been used, the installer will request Disc 1 again, at which point the install finalises and you can run the game.

It should be noted that REALLY OLD software-- basically, anything designed for Windows 98 or below-- will not run on modern computers. At all. But, if you're really, REALLY interested in playing something like SimHealth or Jane's Combat Simulator, you might try running those on a virtual machine with Windows 98. That's a little complicated to go into right now, but if you're interested in that, look into Virtual Box, a freeware VM from Oracle. If the game you want to play is from MS-DOS-- like Wolfenstein 3D or Jazz Jackrabbit-- Dosbox has you covered.
