An update regarding inFAMOUS: Erosion
Tumblr media
Hey there! Rogue here, and I have something regarding inFAMOUS Erosion that I wish to tell you all about so as not to blindside you.
Tumblr media
(Now, stop panicking, first off lol.)
I got married in the height of the pandemic; everyone in my family has autoimmune issues (even my poor cat is asthmatic) and my then-boyfriend at the time and I wanted to cover as many bases as possible, especially since I was pregnant. So our five year plan became a five week one, and we got married. No wedding, no reception, just us on the courthouse steps with a judge (we weren't even allowed in) and then take out after. While neither of us cared about a wedding, we never got to go on a honeymoon, and that was always something we strived for down the line. COVID-19 took so much from so many of us, and my family was no exception.
Well, the parasite that was in my womb is now two years old, the oldest is becoming an adventurous spirit, and we've decided it's time to put that savings account to good use and make this a family affair. We've booked not only two separate trips, but a series of events all throughout July and August so we may 'live it up' in lieu of time and chances missed.
And I plan on going on hiatus while we do so.
I fear I won't be able to keep up with the word count and deliver a quality tale on time, and would rather make sure I don't burn myself out trying to perform on top of everything else we have planned. It's also always healthy to take a break! And I feel I have the perfect midpoint prepared to pause and give you all an 'intermission' of sorts before returning. I know it's always so so scary to hear an author is going on hiatus, because really, that's the preamble to an orphaned fic; so I want to assure you that where I will stop the story before disappearing is 104,404 — and the current fic is at 136k words. There's still passion for the project, and it will probably be worked on in the lull time of my hiatus; but that gap between where I've posted and where I am is closing, and I don't want it to get any closer. And I fear trips and concerts and museums and events and a wild summer is simply the perfect storm to be caught in — and to lose my way in the kicked up dust.
"So then...what does that mean?"
I will be posting up to Chapter Twenty, with a two-chapter 'mid-season finale' as I've been jokingly calling it on the 9th and 10th of July. After that, I will be going on hiatus until September 11th, 2023. Another Monday, per the usual. I am beyond excited for this second half; I finally feel like I can dive into the real meat of the story. Once I hit that midpoint, every piece of foreshadow and worldbuilding is on the table. The big turning point that'll propel the second half of Erosion will be revealed. I'll be moving on from whittling the wood to manipulating the marionette, and you have no idea how hyped I am to really give you the tale I'm trying to spin. The sad thing is, I've still gotta spin it, and I fear I won't be able to dedicate myself as well as I should in order to really give this idea in my head the honor it deserves. And of course, what you deserve too; I'm a freelance editor. If I put anything out there that sucks, I will off myself lol.
"Will you be disappearing too?"
Nah. Probably not. I'm chronically online and legally/medically can't drive, so I gotta do something on the car/plane rides. There are two one shots in my google docs I might push out in the meantime, an art commission planned, and of course, I will always supply memes and share other inFAMOUS pieces that my dear friends are putting out. There's so much newfound chatter in the inFAMOUS fandom that I feel confident I could step back for two months and you wouldn't even miss me! It's truly breathtaking to see this fandom returning like this. If you put things into perspective, while two months seems so goddamn long — that's 4 chapter updates. That's it!! That's all I'm gonna be gone for!!
"What if you finish Erosion while you're gone?"
God, that'd be the day, wouldn't it? I'll definitely freak the fuck out and post nonstop on Tumblr, so if I do, you'll know lol. If by some stroke of a miracle I finish Erosion while I'm gone, I will still be on hiatus until September 11th. I need a goddamn vacation. But upon returning, if I am either done or very close to done, I plan on upping my schedule to a weekly posting system. If not, biweekly until that point.
Tumblr media
So, that's my advance warning for you all: I plan on stepping away, but it will not be permanent. I can't disappear from this fandom the moment it's beginning to return! That'd truly be insane!
While I am gone, check out @conduiitz'/@kraftledare's Shattered, a comic of a Glass Conduit looking for his best friend in a post-apocalyptic wasteland; @codenamehazard's No Man's Land, an Evil Karma Cole MacGrath AU that follows the Beast as he explores the Wildlands of the Great Plains and the society Conduits have created in it; and @cedar990's Equilibrium, where Light Conduit — and DUP Agent — Ezra Sims tries to throttle the plans of the rising Dust Men in Nova City.
And keep an eye out when you read; you might catch a certain pair of Conduit twins playing around in the backgrounds of these stories! They need a break too, after all.
I want to thank you for your understanding and for all the time you've dedicated so far to hearing me tell this story. I've truly enjoyed every second of it, and cannot wait for more. Tsiikohtaahsi'tsihp amohk aohkanoo'p — which in my tribe's language means I'm so happy we've all gathered here; it's given me a chance to tell a tale I never thought anyone would care about, and to watch the embers of this grand video game franchise be fanned enough to reignite. I love this community and will be itching to return the moment I declare official hiatus status, I just know it.
But until then, let's finish the first half of inFAMOUS: Erosion!

so the new post editor is an abomination and trying to answer asks feels like I’ve time traveled into the tumblr hell that was 2012
Tumblr media
the funny thing is, right after the beta option came out, I tried it
multiple times
and then I sat down and I did exactly what the @staff asked us to do, which is to give them constructive feedback
I pointed out the difficulty in having the post/close buttons reversed for those of us who have been using xkit since its inception (something that is, in fact, not so difficult to fix) and how unbelievably frustrating it is to keep automatically clicking the “close” button by mistake
I pointed out the lack of quick tag bundles. again, something that content creators (you know, the people who keep tumblr running via providing content), need to have
also say goodbye to frequent tag memory. the new post editor doesn’t remember approximately 90% of tags you use daily
it also does not remember any tags that use columns, hyphens, exclamation marks, or asterisks; in other words, just fuck people who create content altogether I guess
there is no option to uncheck the full-size gifs box when adding gifs to text posts (each gif addition is automatically 540px in the new post editor, even gifs which are 268px, which makes the gif unsightly, and the text post itself large and cumbersome)
still no outbox, which xkit managed to keep through years of useless tumblr updates
NO AUTOMATED POST TAGGING so say goodbye to your queue tag at the very least, and for the rest of us, say goodbye to automated tags for answered asks, or basically any preset tagging you had in place to keep track of the TYPE of posts you have on your blog
god forbid you click on the video or audio buttons by mistake when trying to answer an ask, because exiting out of them means you don’t get the other options back. you need to close that ask, click on the answer button again, then start from the beginning
blocking anonymous asks was broken for hours today (the staff claims they fixed that problem but I haven’t had an opportunity to check)
In other words, instead of saying, hey guys, this FUCKING SUCKS please STOP making this website less functional by the day
I said hey, this stuff is really inconvenient/unnecessary/frustrating to use, and here is a list of things we’ve all been depending on since the dawn of time to make the website functional and ACCESSIBLE
and I got an answer back basically going “Thank you! We’re working on it! We’re constantly improving! We’re going to fix many, if not all of those things!” That was back in March
It is now nearly June, the “new inbox” has been basically forced on us, and it has all the issues they asked be reported ahead of time, and none of the improvements they said they were working on
and the thing is, I’ve lived through all the bullshit updates on this site. updates that have made me frustrated and angry, updates that gave me frequent migraines, updates that have fucked with my blacklist, and my blocked posts, and my list of blocked users, updates that have subjected me to every possible inconvenience, updates that have flagged every single fashion post on my 28k-follower fashion blog as fucking explicit (and forced me to appeal each one of them individually), updates that have both rearranged and erased my queue, updates that have subjected me to every type of content I had taken extensive steps to avoid via every tool and extension I could possibly find and I am so goddamn done
I’m not going to manually type in 12 tags for every fucking post
the day the new post editor goes in effect and we lose all the tagging options I’m just gonna stop making and reblogging things because I’m old, I’m tired, and I’m done

929.
Do you ever actually enjoy going to "common" places like the supermarket, the post office, etc? If so, which of these "common" places do you typically enjoy visiting? >> I don’t think so. Most of these kinds of trips are predictable and tedious. I enjoy them more when I’m in an okay mood, but otherwise it’s just... work.
Have you ever made your own bumper sticker? If so, what did it say/portray? If you haven't made your own bumper sticker, what would you want it to say/portray if you did? >> I’ve never made a bumper sticker and I don’t want to make one.
How often do you "sort through" your Xanga subscriptions? Are you more of a person who often unsubscribes from people because you follow too many blogs or are you more of a person who does not often unsubscribe from people because you only follow certain blogs, usually only the ones that you really like? >> I don’t follow survey blogs on tumblr, typically, although I had to follow one recently because tumblr had stopped showing his posts in the tags (for me, anyway). Most everyone else I can find in the tags, so it’s fine.
Now often do you notice sexual references in songs that aren't necessarily direct, such as the emphasis that is put on "everybody knows I'm hung..." in Hot Chelle Ray's "Hung Up"? >> To be honest, it seems like most sexual references in songs nowadays are pretty goddamn overt. Like, WAP just came out...
If you do not smoke marijuana, how do you feel about the legalization of it? Maybe you are so sick of hearing about this that you do not even think about it enough to have an opinion? To guard against leaving anyone out, if you do smoke marijuana, how often do you smoke? >> The reason I don’t smoke it is because it causes adverse effects for me. I support its decriminalisation and I wish its legalisation didn’t immediately result in a fucking monopoly in this country but, you know, capitalism. Still, can you imagine telling someone from like 1980 that “Big Marijuana” was going to be a problem in 2020? It’d be like 12 Monkeys, immediate loony bin for you.
Do you currently live in one of the states that has legalized same-sex marriage? If so, which state are you in? Keep in mind, Delaware has recently joined this group! >> Well, it’s federally legal now.
In terms of the biggest news stories right now, how aware would you say that you are of what is going on in the world? You can judge this by your knowledge of the "Tebow Bill", the case of the Texas cheerleaders that were criticized for their religious banners, the guilty verdict that was handed to Jodi Arias on terms of the 1st degree murder of Travis Alexander, and the rescue of the missing girls in Cleveland who were held captive for a decade. >> (This survey is... uh, a few years old. In case you haven’t already noticed.) I’m relatively aware of the biggest news stories in the United States right now because they’re kind of everywhere (and also because I get daily emails from The Flip Side). Even people in other countries can’t avoid knowing about what’s going on in the US, unfortunately. Also, I should add that one of the biggest continuously-updating news points right now is a global pandemic, so, you know. Kind of hard not to know about that.
Obviously hypothetically speaking, your child is charged with a crime and could receive the death penalty punishment. Your child asks you not to testify for life in prison instead because he/she would rather die fairly soon rather than to live the rest of his/her life in prison. As a parent, do you think that you could obey their wishes in good conscience and not attempt to spare your child's life? >> If I couldn’t, I’d be really fucking disappointed in myself. I’m going to allow for the variable that I might feel differently about a child if I actually had one (since parents are always talking about how us childless people “just don’t get it”), but I really can’t see my values changing that much, and one of my values is respecting other people’s right to die.
Be honest, when you ask questions like "how are you?" do you actually expect a true, possibly elaborate, response or do you expect the typical "fine" or "okay" answer in which you are mostly just asking to be polite? Perhaps it depends on the situation? >> If I ask, it’s because I actually want to know what’s going on in the person’s life -- like, they’re a friend or something and we haven’t talked for a while. I don’t ask this out of obligation or weird social rules or anything.
Do you wash your hair every single day when you shower? Do you really believe that skipping a wash every now and then is better for the hair? >> First of all, I don’t shower every single day either. Also, I’m not white, so my hair texture demands more time between washing if I don’t want it to be dry and brittle.
Would you rather have long, damaged hair or short, healthy hair? In other words, which is more important to you, the length or the health of your hair? >> Who the fuck wants damaged hair? *thinks about all the white people with “dreadlocks”* Wait, never mind, don’t answer that.
Who was the last person in your life to have "car problems" and what happened? >> I mean, the only person really in my life is Sparrow and the last car problem she had was when she had that flat and tried to drive to Meijer on it and the whole fuckin thing just disintegrated, lmao. That was an Adventure.
When you text someone until you are about to go to sleep, do you usually send that person a goodnight/goodbye text, just reply to their message when you wake up, or does it vary? >> Depends on the nature of the conversation. If it’s really casual I’ll just let it taper off. If it’s more focused or serious, then I’ll warn them that it’s almost my bedtime so if they have anything pressing to add, add it now. Otherwise we can just pick it back up again in the morning (or let it end, whatever). ...This is also all hypothetical, since who the fuck am I texting.
What do you want the most right now? >> Nothing.
Are/were your parents/guardians more strict or easy going? >> Very strict.
How many items are currently in the recycling bin on your computer? >> Oh god. Like ~1100 files, because of that goddamn OneDrive fiasco a couple of months ago. I forgot to empty it, but I just emptied it now, so thanks for reminding me.
When was the last time you ate spaghetti? >> I don’t remember.
Does it bother you when surveys you've copied and pasted into an entry are formatted? For instance, the previous survey taker may have used Tahoma font in the entry or aligned the survey to the center. >> This isn’t a problem on tumblr. Usually the problem is that new!dashboard just jacks up formatting so when I copy from dash and paste into the editor, the spacing is all wrong. I solve that problem by copying from the permalink instead... which is an extra step and kind of annoying, but whatcha gonna do.
Do you actually find comedians with a style like Will Ferrell and Steve Carell funny or are they more annoying and moronic to you? >> Steve Carell can be funny sometimes, I guess. I don’t like most Will Ferrell movies. It’s just not my sense of humour, I’m not going to fucking insult it just because it’s not my thing.

SNK #107 Recap
Tumblr media
Not a prediction. A spoiler.
I’m going to get the criticism portion of this post out of the way first. This is mostly gonna be writer’s mumbo-jumbo until we get to the cut, so if you want to know my thoughts on THAT panel, click the link now. Everyone else...shall we?
It’s easy to tell when and how much editors are involved in a certain update. Turns out, they like exposition even less than some of you all do. Makes sense; exposition is quite hard, but in so many ways I felt like this chapter was what 91 should have been.
It’s a reset. A needed one. I’m telling you now as a scribe myself - after running for our lives for a full volume, we need a moment to stop, save the game, check our inventory, etc. I’m glad Isayama at least gave us one more chapter before launching into the next (and likely final) story arc.
Reiner should have opened the chapter. I say that purely based on how these last few chapters have been structured. Every shot is framed like a movie still. The movie buff in me is incredibly pleased by this, but the movie reviewer in me isn’t far behind, either.
A big problem with Suicide Squad - besides, well, everything - is that there isn’t any natural flow. The editing is terrible. I won’t call 107 terrible in that regard, but it is very sloppy. Reiner should start this chapter, because if we’re only going to Marley long enough to see Reiner check the plumbing, we should get it out of the way, and then cut to the kids, because he asked for them.
-Reiner wakes up, Porco offers booze, Reiner asks for Gabi and Falco -Gabi murks the guard, escapes with Falco from prison -Cut to Big Boss Eren, who is also in prison
It’s just basic sequencing. I get that 106 ended with Eren, so you’d like to see 107 start with him, but cold opens are a thing, and they don’t take that long. I actually start most of my own stories this way.
Paradis Island has three options presented to them that give them the best chance of being not-dead. Given that one of those options includes the End of the World, I can’t say they chose the worst option necessarily but, damn did they come close. It’s a really bad idea.
I’ll stop here and keep all the serious talk under the cut. It gets personal and some of you might not agree with what’s said, but I feel I need to say it, so I’ll give you the option of stopping here. I like this chapter overall, even if I didn’t like everything that happened.
Stray Thoughts
-Eren is still totally not cool for going AWOL and killing everyone in Liberio but...just what did Paradis plan to do as Zeke’s term wound down? How were they going to get to him?
-Keep your eye on Gabi. She’s going to have a heap of development shortly and it will be very satisfying.
-Armin is sulking in a dungeon; Eren is fuming in a cell; Mikasa is crying on a grave.
-Kiyomi greeting Mikasa with comments on how “healthy” she looked gave me major Get Out vibes. I don’t think she’s evil, but I doubt she’s genuine.
-Sadly, not even Zeke and Levi’s hike into the Forest of Big Ass Trees was enough to distract me from how very screwed everything is; but, it was still very cute.
Part of what makes fiction difficult is the reaction. We project so many things onto whatever it is we’ve consumed; that’s what we’re supposed to do, after all. But the author is, usually, an autonomous human being that creates of their own volition which always leads to feelings of some sort. Hurt feelings, happy feelings, outraged feelings.
I say that to say this: it’s okay to stop.
I say this earnestly as a friend and with zero snark. The best you can hope for from this story now is a bittersweet ending. It will not be happy. Not in the classic storytelling sense. I don’t like seeing people in any fandom struggle through a piece of work that clearly makes them uncomfortable. I like, even less, people hate-read something or feel like, they’re near the end so they might as well. Not so!
Historia’s fate is very distressing. Her complacency with this awful idea just because the Survey Corps couldn’t be assed to come up with one goddamn plan is upsetting to put it lightly. No one is happy and the story presents it that way. Which is good because-
Tumblr media
I think I should get this one off my chest. I feel like it’s warranted, as well, since SnK joins the X-Men as the other most famous racism allegory. The discourse I’ve seen floating in the tag, while not incorrect, is overlooking a key undertone in this series (which wouldn’t be a first for this site ayy).
In Ferguson, MO and Baltimore, MD: two young, unarmed African-Americans were betrayed by the people sworn to protect them. In one case, a man died in police custody after egregious abuse. In the other, a teenager was murdered by an officer in broad daylight. Both cities burned for days on end.
And then I see people talk about how we should change the way we dress and talk and how we should be civil and I laugh and laugh. Because literally the only thing we want to know is: How many more of our people have to DIE before we can be seen as human?
Tumblr media
The answer in Real Life and Fake Life is: I DON’T KNOW.
Fuck.
Any followers of mine have no doubt seen my comparisons of this story to Metal Gear Solid. (I don’t just write about SnK, it’s just what everyone reads.) It feels weird because a) Hideo Kojima is a much better writer than Hajime Isayama and b) the stories themselves are very different. However...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How could I not?
You see, Jack was the world’s finest soldier, but his mentor defected to Russia and nearly plunged the world into nuclear war, leaving Jack as the only one who could stop her.
Only NOT. Joy was undercover and was compromised, but sacrificed herself and died in infamy to protect Uncle Sam from taking the heat for a horrific war crime (because our record is squeaky clean as we all know).
This breaks Jack and he spends the next four decades trying to fulfill The Boss’ Will, not realizing that his unending anger and unchecked PTSD has warped this ideal to suit his need for blood and violence.
Kojima-san has a relatively hopeful view of the human condition despite the suffering that occurs throughout his series. Metal Gear Solid ends with two lives converging on one another as they reach their apex. Jack finally gets revenge on his oldest enemy and dies alone on the grave of his mentor. His son, David, walks away from the battle and lives a quiet life with his otaku husband and their adopted daughter.
Kojima’s message is clear: you aren’t where you’re from. The theme comes up often. As Logan bleeds out in his daughter Laura’s arms, he tells her not to be the weapon they made her. Going by the recent updates, it seems that SnK is just a tad more cynical. And that’s fine.
I saw Ant-Man and the Wasp recently. Compared to the sheer density of Avengers 3, this was a light and airy jaunt. It had a happy ending. A very happy ending. And I did not like it. The movie was fine, but the resolution to the conflict (no spoilers) was so rushed and involved a deus ex moment that would make Steven Moffat blush. I don’t need a happy ending (I’ll still take one), I need a satisfying one. Now, what does that mean?
The best chance Shingeki no Kyojin has at a happy(ish) ending is for Reiner Braun (Solid Snake) to infiltrate Paradis (Outer Heaven), track down Eren Jaeger (Big Boss) and beat the shit out of him until he wakes from his living nightmare and says, “This is a terrible idea! Why didn’t anyone tell me?” wherein everyone responds, “We DID!!!”
I feel like only half of that is going to happen. Eren’s mind is fractured and the world continues with it’s awful machinations. And whenever I feel I should even half-heartedly dispute the idea that everyone sucks forever, I remember that the “Land of the Free” is currently holding toddlers in cages and...welp. I got nothing.
Then, I think about my younger siblings and my goddaughter and how I love them all so much - more than I love myself. I just want them to find a happy life somehow, someway in this crazy world and I know I can’t give up, because they’re watching.
That’s why I still write my stories the way I do. I may be emotionally busted, but I still believe in the message, and just need someone to take the baton. The message, in almost every story I write, is that you need your fucking friends, because finding another human being (or multiple!) that can stand your presence for more than thirty seconds at a time is a gift that must be treasured.
Chances are slim of this happening in the world of SnK, and that may not be the worst thing. A satisfying end for me is one that makes sense. The gymnastics required to get to an ending where one of the main characters doesn’t die a horrible, cursed death would be worse than the gymnastics that got us here to begin with. No two writers work the same.
The official mood for the latter part of this series is EMA facing the ocean in Ch 90. Eren asks if they’ll have to kill everyone on the other side of the water and his two mates each have an expression that says, “Shit, man, we thought maybe we’d build sand castles instead.”

A livejournal-style bandom post because I’d kind of like it to be 2008 again
mood: drunk
music: The Academy Is... “Sleeping With Giants”
So, I spent quite a few hours this week backreading my livejournal. It all started innocently, I wanted to reread my initial capslock thoughts about Deathly Hallows in honor of HP’s 20th anniversary but then it turned into my rereading the many, many, many posts about dumb band boys, so I got all nostalgic for their music and put on my Just Beautiful playlist for the next few days.
It has prompted Thoughts.
It’s weird because more than half of this music I still listen to somewhat regularly. I have over 80 playlists and many of them include songs or albums by those bands, so it’s not like I never listen to them anymore. But I don’t tend to listen to the full albums or certain songs that much, and I don’t listen to all of these bands at once very much, so the deep concentration of bandom music all at once has been quite the throwback. It’s also been very enlightening as to why only one of these bands has survived.
Caveat: I cannot and will not ever be objective about Empires and their music so they’re not apart of this discussion. They’re still too close to me. (after all this time? always)
Anyway, so! Let’s get this out of the way:
Wow, Panic!’s albums have aged super weirdly. Like, Fever was always a goofy weird album but listening to in 2017 is so strange! I don’t know what to make of it! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the hell out of it still, but it just sounds so of the moment from 2006 that I can’t really think of anything else when I listen to it.
Pretty. Odd. is also odd, (ha) and I found myself liking it less than I used to. “Northern Downpour” is still my fav ever and I don’t hate it or anything but I found myself not wanting to listen to those songs as much? Also, my car stereo is much better than my old laptop’s and those goddamn “doots” on “Mad as Rabbits” are fucking loud.
But this is all very weird to me because I still generally really like and even love a bunch of the songs of The Young Veins’ album. But I’ve also gotten into ‘60s pop a ton more since 2010 so maybe that’s why. (I...I do not care for Vices & Virtues almost at all. Positive note: I do really like the newest album! good for you Brendon!)
Also aging strangely, to me, is The Black Parade. “Famous Last Words” is a forever jam and still my favorite MCR song but I approached that album as a whole so differently a decade later (fuck I am so old). I didn’t like “Mama” as much as I used to but I liked “Teenagers” more. I do not love “I Don’t Love You” or “Cancer” at all. Many of the songs run together in my head. But “Sleep”, a song I had few feelings about in 2006 really stuck out to me as one of the best songs on it now.
Three Cheers, however, has aged pretty excellently. So has Danger Days. Bullets, not so much, at least for me. I still cannot believe that Gerard Way is a respected comics writer and editor of a DC imprint, btw.
Cobra Starship’s stuff sounds exactly like I remember it, for better or worse. They just wanted to give us a party and it all would still sound great at a party. (I wish This is Ivy League had given us more twee as fuck sad pop songs though)
Gym Class Heroes has mostly aged well, with a some exceptions. Mostly just “Cupid’s Chokehold” because all I can think of when I listen to it is that this song is about Katy Perry and how fucking weird that is.
I still follow and adore Greta’s music (Springtime Carnivore is her current band and it’s incredible) so I still really enjoy The Hush Sound but her voice also sounds so young that it throws me a little.
Periphery bands are all over the place. I still listen to The Like all the time so I still love their stuff. The Cab sure was a thing. It’s very weird to listen to a Hey Monday song when I remember that Cassadee Pope won a season of The Voice as a country artist. 504 Plan is the best pre-bandom band don’t @  me.
So that leaves me with Fall Out Boy and The Academy Is...
Fall Out Boy’s stuff, with only a scant few exceptions, has aged very well. It also sounds the least “of that time”, at least, in comparison to everything else. Like yeah, “Sugar We’re Goin’ Down” takes me back to 2005 but it’s not so 2005.
They are also the only band left standing as a full group, give or take whatever the status of GCH is.
I feel like this can’t be a coincidence.
It’s also really astounding to realize that they’ve never changed members (well, if you don’t count Evening Out With Your Girlfriend, which you shouldn’t). Like, holy shit, that’s so impressive! They took their big break but came back with one of their best albums ever. Elton John is on that album! That’s fucking bonkers! But it really shows how good of a band they are and how well those 4 dudes work together. Look at everyone they’ve left in their wake. Even a contemporary who is still going strong, Paramore, has had more member turnover than Taking Back Sunday (Which, don’t get me started). It makes me respect those guys in a whole new light.
So, when I say that TAI has the best debut album of all the bandom bands, I really, truly, somewhat non-objectively mean it.
Seriously, Almost Here has aged wonderfully. I can listen to every song on there and not get caught up in mid-2000s nostalgia. I mean, I do, but not in the way Panic’s music does. And while Santi is still my favorite album of theirs, I still don’t like a couple of the songs on it (ugh “Seed”) but I really enjoy every song on Almost Here. Maybe because it’s slightly less depressing than their other stuff (which 40% of is about how they’re almost gonna make it, they’re just on the cusp of making it big, this is gonna be the time! and welp, it didn’t really happen. it’s obviously a big part of Almost Here but it’s much less desperate when Bill Beckett is only like 21 singing about it) I’m also less emotionally compromised it, which is why Santi remains my favorite btw, so I think that’s allowed it to age so well, at least for me.
“But!” you cry. “Take This To Your Grave exists!” oh my child, yes, it does. And while “Saturday” still is great and so is a lot of that album, the screamo, my child, is not. Also not? “Grenade Jumper” because the second-hand embarrassment is strong. Stronger than it even was in 2008.
And the rest: Fever’s weird, Bullets is unpolished as hell, Cobra’s is fun but they would do better, GCH’s has scrappy charm but I don’t listen to it much, The Hush Sound’s is just okay (remember it’s not Like Vines). Almost Here beats them all, at least for me.
It’s so good and fun and it was their best chance and I’m still so depressed they’re gone and I don’t know what any of them are doing, besides Sisky playing bass for Carly Rae Jepsen, and I miss them. I miss them and Empires so much. I miss refreshing FriendsOrEnemies or blogspots all the time for band updates and I miss trying to figure out complicated timelines and I miss staying up late to wait for a new song to drop at midnight and I miss TAI TV and I miss saving every photo I could of Tom Conrad and I miss the complete and utter joyous shock of those two going on an acoustic tour together and how thankful I am to have seen that, even if Sean was half-dead from the flu and I miss Bill’s terrible earnestness and I just... I miss them.
I get it, life happens, things don’t work out, it’s for the best, people need to find their own happiness their own way, not everyone makes it. Not everyone is supposed to make it. Fall Out Boy is a one in a million for a reason. And I love them. I love their music, still. I’m so happy for them and I love that they are left standing.
But sometimes, I’d give anything for TAI or Empires to have their spot.
