#honestly the way studio orange combines 2d and 3d animation is pretty clever a lot of the time

furious that there is ONE hand-drawn frame of wolfwood, and it’s the best his character design looks in the entire show, and it’s right after meryl hit him with a truck

Okay
so Space Jam 2 is pretty much "Space Jam" meets "Ready Player One"
And it's EXACTLY as painful and cringy as one might have expected. Which is not to say that the movie is completely awful.
The core idea, expanded from the original, is in fact kinda clever, and is a commentary on the absorbing and dehumanising nature of the technology, as well as careers. It could, potentially work... had it not been immersed in a movie made to just sell tons and tons and TONS of product placement and cameos of every single WB property in the world.
Tumblr media
And yeah, you are seeing right, those are the droogs from Clockwork Orange, literal rapists, standing next to Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo. Ruh-roh.
The animation was... mixed. As I have predicted from the trailers, the first third, when LeBron exists in the tune world, and is animated in 2d style, is pretty good. Dare I say, looney even.
Tumblr media
The first third, where Bugs and James are "getting the band back together" is kinda funny... as long as they stick to WB animated properties. Then they throw in Matrix, Game of Thrones, or Mad Max, and it starts to steer away into cringe territory.
(Also, side note, they put Granny instead of Trinity in the Matrix parody, and she says "Can't a lady check her twitter?", and she pulls out... Speedy Gonzales. If only Granny famously had an animal companion, whose name would be more appropriate. I'm sorry, I had to talk about this, this joke was weeeird)
Then, half-way through the movie goes full 3d, and... it's visually awful. And I'm not talking just about the Looney Tunes, since they are honestly fine, and you can get used to them
Tumblr media
I'm talking about the whole composition of wider shots. Look, almost every shot of the game looks like that
Tumblr media
Can you honesty get what's going on? There is SO MUCH CG, colours, special effects and TONS of cameo characters in the background, always moving and cheering, that it is nauseating! (Though, speaking of cameos, there is one that is genuinely hilarious, and I'm not gonna spoil it).
I couldn't help but think of movies like "Wreck-It Ralph", or the legendary Roger Rabbit, and how elegantly they have managed to combine intellectual properties, from different studios, mind you. Those are all WB ones, and they were just thrown into one blender to create this colourful soup of visual nonsense.
There is a good movie hidden somewhere in Space Jam 2, but it takes a lot of digging through it to find it.
