#honestly in my opinion if the younger me saw posts saying shit like 'the aesthetic part of solarpunk is stupid and unimportant'

You know what, while I'm doing hot takes. And this one may be obvious considering I'm actively contributing to hosting the Solarpunk Aesthetic Week event but like.
Dear everyone who's constantly deriding the aesthetic portions of the solarpunk movement/genre; do you just not understand that being able to visualize the future you want is immensely important to being able to work towards it? Being able to get other people on board with it?
When I first got interested in Solarpunk, it wasn't for the hot leftist takes about the top ways to dismantle the government for the people, or top tips on how to build your own solar panel apparatuses. What brought me in? Visions of a hopeful future. I learned and began to love the rest as I dove deeper into solarpunk circles, but there is no denying that my first intro to it--and likely many people's first intro to it--was via the art and aesthetic spheres. The term 'solarpunk' was literally coined to refer to the aesthetic movement, and we've been building up from there ever since.
'When are people going to realize the aesthetic parts don't matter and what really matters is praxis--' dude, the aesthetic parts do matter. Inspiring people does matter. Showing people visions of a hopeful future is immensely important, it's why so many people join this movement. We see glimpses of what a hopeful future could look like, through beautiful art or riveting stories, we're inspired by things like stained glass and organic designs and statues and fashion concepts--and then we think to ourselves 'how can we help make this future happen?' And we learn the praxis and we work towards the goals and we share it with others because that's just how we work.
Seeing isn't always believing, but sometimes in order to believe in something with your whole heart, it helps to be able to visualize what you want. For yourself and for others.
So yes. The aesthetic parts of solarpunk do matter. Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk.

A/N: i'm gonna respond to this in sections bc it's quite long so bare with me.
Howdy y’all, 🤠 again. Yes, I didn’t in fact die. I’m sorry though that I kept getting sidetracked and couldn’t submit this until now, my boss decided to keep dumping her work into my lap. So I just wanna preface this by stating that I’m going to try and say what I want to as coherent as possible, but I have pretty severe ADHD so I’m not always as easy to understand as I think I am in my head, and I often go off on tangents, over explain things and circle back to topics randomly without realizing. Im basically going to go over their relationship over the years as I said previously (I’m not gonna go into detail about every single scandal and shitty thing Juliet did over the years, because we’d be here all year. so I figure I won’t cover them here, but rather let people ask specific questions if they want to. Remember, I was present for pretty much everything so feel free to ask.😊), but I’m also going to do kind of a mini deep dive into Andy’s behavior and actions (because although the snakes will hit you with every excuse in the book, and tell you that you’re looking too far into things and that it doesn’t matter, it does. The way a person acts in general and towards people around them is very relevant when talking about someone’s health, happiness, and well-being.) To start off, let’s take it all the way back to the time before Juliet’s reign of terror, when Andy and Scout were still together. In all honesty from what I saw of them together (and I saw pretty much everything they posted, I’m only a year younger than Andy, and I was quite into him when he was on MySpace and such, and I always watched anything with him and Scout together because they were fucking adorable lol) they had a really healthy relationship. Not once did I get weird vibes from them. The way Andy acted toward and with Scout, you could tell they really loved each other and were happy together. They had nothing to prove. It just was normal. (For any of you who are younger, or didn’t come into the picture until Andy was already post-scout and would like to see some videos of them together, you could generally search on YouTube for it, but also there’s a specific channel on there called like bring the milk tea or something that has videos of old Andy blogs and also Andy and scout on stickam and such. Worth a look if you’re curious) They weren’t constantly all over each other like possessive pack dogs *ahem Juliet ahem* and whenever Andy mentioned scout he didn’t need to shower her in compliments. They both seemed very secure in both themselves and the relationship. Super cute. Initially when they broke up it seemed quite odd. I didn’t really expect it. It got even weirder when he states that he and Juliet are together. It didn’t feel like they fit together at all (and no I’m not talking about from a fame or success perspective. At least not yet lol) As I’ve said I got bad vibes from Juliet right from the get go. Andy already seemed to be acting not like himself. (Also snakeys have argued that it’s just that he’s more mature now and that’s why he acts nervous and constantly looks Ike he wants to die. 🙄 maturity doesn’t mean losing your fucking personality and being unhappy most of the time. Jesus Christ.) it seemed like they got possessive of each other and constantly needed to show people how in love they were. Pictures, videos, and fucking public love paragraphs to show they are, in fact, in a super real relationship and they love each other. It also felt like Andy’s family was in on this whole weird charade. They (Chris honestly) started to defend her degenerate behavior and attack anyone who had even a whisper of negative things to say about her or their relationship. It was like watching a group of awkward, pretty mediocre actors put on a play about them being together. (I’ve hit the text limit now, but there will be more that I will write just after I submit this one though, fear not haha. N, you can either post this now or wait until I submit the rest, it’s up to you.) 1 / ? -🤠
A/N: i was here for a lot of it as well so i do remember some of this. although i did join the fandom shortly after him and juliet got together (i joined like around the time she was on the voice) i literally remember hoping that him and scout would get back together bc juliet just rubbed me the wrong way and i didn't know why at the time. & side note i actually do recommend people go look at old videos of andy and scout they were really adorable. there is this one video of them singing (i think a carrie underwood song lol) in the car and it's really cute. but yeah just bc he's older doesn't mean his whole entire personality changes. you can be any age and act however you want. i could even use jenna marbles & julien solomita (a youtube couple) as an example, they've been together for i think like 8 or 9 years and are about the same age as A&J (julien being around andy's age & jenna around juliet's age) & although they can have mature adult conversations and all of that, they still act like idiots and joke around together. neither of them look uncomfortable or are afraid of saying certain things like andy is around juliet. so andy aging doesn't mean shit in regards to his personality doing a 180.
🤠okay, so part two here we go. (Also I apologize if I get the chronological order of anything I talk about incorrect, I’m a bit scattered sometimes and the next ask I make will be the one where I talk about the domestic abuse and I tend to get quite heated, which only makes my brain function worse lol) so the point at which Andy was trying to get fans to go vote for/ support Juliet when she was on the voice seemed really fishy. I’m all for supporting the work of the people you love, but it’s kinda strange how hard Andy was pushing this at the time. Too hard in my opinion. I’m obviously aware that it was helpful in the end and he more or less got what he was asking for. But it was like he absolutely needed people to vote for her. As if he would get in trouble if they didn’t. So around 2012 or 2013 it felt like things really went down the shitter from there and just got progressively worse. (I never knew why for the longest time, but after they revealed that Vegas wedding that happened in about that time frame, it made a lot of sense.) Andy’s behavior began to change towards his fans. There are a lot of accounts of this happening from fans themselves and a lot of people said that 1. It was worse with Juliet around, and 2. a lot of the time it would happen towards females especially. ( I think more towards the “pretty” fans but don’t count me on that, I don’t know for sure.) This was completely night and day. Especially coming from the same man who used to always defend his fans and once stated something along the lines of he would never have a crazy or awkward fan story because he loves and is grateful for all of his fans and he won’t get upset if they’re just really excited. I would understand if these fans crossed the line in some way (like the later incident of fans finding his address and harassing them, which is unacceptable no matter who the people are) but from most if not all of the fan stories I’ve heard, they didn’t. They were being respectful and didn’t do anything to warrant this happening to them besides showing up. Which brings me to my next point, a lot of these negative experiences were caused by Juliet. Either she was the one being mean to people, she was causing Andy to be mean to people on her behalf, or her presence was upsetting Andy to the point that he was angry and started being rude and irritable. What scares me the most are the accounts of Andy having a whole Jekyll and Hyde thing, depending on weather or not Juliet was present. Happy when he’s free of her and miserable when he isn’t. In videos of him where Juliet is behind the camera he always seems nervous and strange. Like he’s afraid to mess up. That’s fucking alarming to say the least. You would think that the last thing one would want to do if another person brings them this much anger, stress, and anxiety, the LAST thing they would want to do is fucking marry them. Right? He literally started barely smiling at one point and really doesn’t anymore. I mean for Christ’s sake look at his wedding photos. What’s suppose to be one of the happiest moments of your life and to quote another anon with a different ask, he looks like he’s being dragged to the gallows. (And I get really fucking Angry honestly when snakeys tries to pass it off as “oh he’s awkward he doesn’t know how to smile” or “omg he’s being dramatic for the aesthetics” in some pictures, yes. But why the fuck would you look like that in pictures with the “love of your life” who you now regularly write cringy paragraphs publicly professing your love and complete adoration for? Andy knows how to smile genuinely. Ffs he used to. He smiled genuinely when he was a kid, he smiled genuinely with scout, and he smiled genuinely when Juliet wasn’t around. He doesn’t smile when she is there, and if he does, it is pretty much always visibly fake.) So I may backtrack a little later, but right now I want to talk about the fact that Juliet IS an abuser. More specifically, the plane incident. (Word limit. TBC.) 2 / ? -🤠
A/N: yes. 100%. when it comes to the wedding photos i will never understand people (specifically snakeys) writing off his behavior as him "just being dramatic for the aesthetics". is that something he would do in photoshoots? yeah. is it something he may do on stage? sure. something he would do in an interview? maybe. but candid shots of him on one of the "happiest days of his life"? wtf no. & idk why people think that.
🤠 Just before I start, again, with the pictures, I really don’t think that Andy is enough of a self absorbed egotistical dick that he would actually sit there and put on the whole “miserable tough guy” act in every fucking photo he takes. Ah yes, the infamous plane incident. So straight up, Juliet exposed herself as an abuser, and brought out every bullshit excuse in the book (and made Andy go along with them) to try to cover it up. 1. She was drunk. Honestly this is total bullshit. I say this same thing when people defend cheating or any other degenerate behavior with the excuse of intoxication and I will say it now. Being drunk does not make you a different fucking person. It does not change the thoughts in your head. What it does do is impair your ability to make decisions and judgement skills in general. It’s the same reason why people drive drunk. It’s routine. Its what they would normally do. And because they’re drunk, they can’t see any reason why they shouldn’t do that. Juliet gets drunk, she and Andy fight, she wants to hit him, and because she’s drunk she doesn’t think that she shouldn’t fucking put her hands on him. 2. She hit him in “self defense” and he broke her ribs.(There’s several points I have debunking this) first of all let’s get this out of the way, no one on that plane (including the very real witness who just so happened to be an adult film actress (I think?) who you so love to discount because of it) saw him strike her or even touch her at any time. Two, you are in fucking airplane seats sitting right the fuck next to each other with an armrest in between. It would be pretty fucking hard to break your ribs unless they were made of actual glass, or Andy’s real name is Bruce fucking banner. Bones are surprisingly strong and I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that it’d be damn near impossible for him to do that to you, which brings me to three, if he had broken your ribs you would not be fucking standing up, thrashing around, whining like a little bitch, and oh by the way, continuing to abuse your husband for the second time on that flight. Four, you had a miscarriage. (When I was trying to conceive with my husband it was very difficult. I had two miscarriages before I finally had my son. I’m fully aware of how devastating having one is.) which is why if you are not lying (which I fully believe that Juliet would stoop that low just to get sympathy, especially with this big of a scandal. But I don’t actually have proof of this so I will say that it is just speculation on my part) I don’t fucking care. I am not unsympathetic to her if this did actually happen as I said, however, You do not get to make any excuse for putting your hands on another person out of anger. Ever. I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what kind of stress you are under, I don’t care if you are inebriated in any way and I sure as hell don’t care what the fuck you have between your legs. You do not hurt anyone. Point blank period. Five. You are a woman, you can’t hurt him. This one, actually enrages me. We all know your crusty ass pulled this one out (and threw around trump supporters a few times for good measure) because you know damn well how society and the media views and deals with abusive women. Women can abuse. Women who are shorter or weaker than their target can abuse. The fact that there are people who either don’t know that or don’t agree with that is absolutely baffling. Six. The same (I believe) porn actress. Literally saw you beating your own face with the restraints you had to be put in (which by the way flight attendants only ever use restraints as an absolute last resort when someone becomes a danger to the others on board, so she had to be acting absolutely deranged) to give yourself a bloody nose to claim Andy hit you. Then you proceed to act like a child and tell Andy to call your fucking dad. (Which kinda proves that whole Scientology thing honestly) what in the hell. I stg as long as I am breathing I will never let this go. This is actual fucking domestic abuse. (Word limit TBC.) 3 / ? -🤠
A/N: yeah her hitting him "bc she was drunk" was never a good excuse not only for the reasons you mentioned but, also bc let's be real at no point are you ever going to get served enough alcohol on a plane to make you that drunk i don't care what anyone says. also when it comes to the excuse of him "breaking her ribs" does she forget that andy actually did break his ribs a while ago? i think she even visited him when he was recovering so she should know what kind of pain he was in. & if he actually broke her ribs, there's no way she would have even been able to stand bc i know andy sure wasn't able to. he said it was one of the most painful things he's experienced. (i don't think i need to comment on the rest of this. it would just be redundant. you hit the nail on the head with that.)
🤠 I don’t care if it happened just that one time ore more likely is an everyday occurrence. Abuse is abuse and should never be tolerated. Kind of getting away from the plane thing. Andy always seems, as it’s been said on here before, afraid to mess up. Like he might mess up, and make her mad. A common behavioral pattern in abuse victims. He also at this point and for a decent amount of time before, doesn’t seem like he loves her anymore. Like he keeps up appearances and pretends, but it’s like it’s a job he’s forced to do. He’s tired and burnt out but was probably manipulated into staying and juliet is probably clinging for dear life. Also I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this, but I swear, the veganism and sobering up was just a cover up, most likely formed by either Juliet herself or her fucked up family, after the plane incident to hide their tracks and regain some public favor (because you know, if you advocate for animal rights then you can’t abuse your husband 🙃) Andy never gave a shit before though. Even though it was unhealthy he loved to drink and smoke and was very outspoken about that. And he used to never give a fuck about eating meat or consuming animal products like leather. I mean they’re still selling leather goods ffs. I would get having minor fuck ups because you don’t know any better, but it’s fucking leather. And now Andy is unhealthy and miserable as ever, but the culprit is malnourishment and Juliet rather than cigs, alcohol, and Juliet. My final thoughts: I do definitely believe in the Scientology theory, but if not that than I definitely believe that Andy was and is being manipulated for his fame. On several occasions it really looked like they broke up, including the time when they did, and then said it was a joke. It really doesn’t feel normal. Also, Juliet doesn’t really care about Andy that much. She never wears her wedding ring, she sells all their shit, including sentimental items, and now that she’s gained more popularity from being with him, suddenly doesn’t want to put him in her bio or write him the same creepy ass paragraphs or anything. It’s fucked up how shes so keen to say she did it all herself when really she’s been riding dick for fame since before she even met Andy. It also always kinda seemed to me that Amy was kind of uncomfortable around Juliet. We all know that Chris loves to kiss her ass night and day (most likely to do with the Scientology thing “if” it’s true), but Juliet and Amy always seemed to have a weird relationship like it was tense and forced. Also I just want to mention the time that Juliet talked about screaming at the woman over what I believe was a game night and brushed it off as being competitive and no one gave damn. Fucked up. To finish off this already way too long little series, I think Andy is a very vulnerable insecure person who got manipulated by several people (not just Juliet) some of whom he probably really trusted, and they helped to get him in Juliet’s (equally if not more insecure) hands so she could hurt him as she pleases. I truly hope that even now both he, and his parents (even though Chris really grinds my gears) can get out of this whole shit show, relatively unscathed. I know this is probably pretty unlikely, but hope springs eternal I guess. As I said feel free to ask any questions you may have and I will try to answer them best I can. Thank you for reading. 4 / 4 -🤠
A/N: yet again you hit the nail on the head with this part so i don't need to comment too much. other than the fact that i do agree that juliet and amy's relationship does seem weird.

for the ship ask game: morticia/gomez, and/or joker/harley!
Hmm... I’ll do both :)
Gomez/Morticia
Tumblr media
1. What made you ship it? Well I saw Values when i was a kid (pre-baby bat stage) and thought “wow, they look so cool...” and then my mum showed me the 1960s sitcom and I thought “wow, they’re so in love with each other!” So it was a combination of the aesthetic and the pure love.
2. What are your favourite things about the ship? I love how devoted they are to each other. And they’re so supportive. Also they are really great parents. And yeah they are Goth Goals.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I think there should be more variety in the different portrayals. I love John/Carolyn, Raul/Anjelica and Nathan/Bebe. My one issue with Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron’s version was that I think they were directed to do a Raul/Anjelica impression. Which wasn’t necessarily bad (I thought they did a great job - oh and they clearly told Chloe Grace Moretz to just do Christina Ricci, but that’s an annoying subject for another post) but... I would have preferred it if they did their own take. Also cast non-conventionally-sexy people as this pairing! I dare you! I say as my number one fancast is Pedro Pascal and Ruth Negga... yeah I’m a hypocrite
Joker/Harley
Tumblr media
1. What made you ship it? Honestly, I just found it very fascinating. When I was a lot younger and watching BTAS, I never really understood just how messed up it was, but I do remember really engaging with Harley’s story. And then SS came along and I was like “holy shit, this is a really unique take on this dynamic! It’s clearly dysfunctional and not healthy but it’s also not grossly violent therefore extremely uncomfortable to watch! I can’t wait to see what they do with it!” ...I am boo-boo the fool.
2. What are your favourite things about the ship? The fandom :) And when it’s written well, this ship is just very fascinating. The way I see it, the best portrayals are the ones that make me feel something. I can only really think of one that made me go “aww I hope it works out for them” but feeling “oh my god, I feel so bad for her...” is so much better than “...I don’t care". I should not not care about a character who is in Harley’s position. But shitty writing can make me not care.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? That saying that you’re “so fucking over” your ex, not shutting the fuck up about your ex (despite never giving any detail as to why your ex was an asshole, and when details are given, it’s played more like he forgot her birthday as opposed to he brainwashed her, used and abused her, then threw her out!), and wearing clothes that still reference your ex... is not good character growth AT ALL?! And yeah... THAT is an unpopular opinion, apparently!
Ask me about ships!

Could you do eqg villians scale please? Maybe with such criteria as design, motivation, charisma etc...which ones are poorly written in your opinion? Perhaps some villains got the redemtion arc undeservedly? What do you think?
WHEW THANK GOD OKAY. This is going to be LONG so I’ll put it in a read more. TLDR at the end.
EVERYONE saw this coming but-- Wallflower Blush is the WORST villain in terms of.... the entire criteria you want me to rate them on.
Her design is bland and boring, which I understand is the point bc she’s supposed to blend into the background and not stand out (which I mean, arguably gets her some points for the fact her design works for what it was intended for), but she’s just.... so boring to look at.
Motivation was HORSE shit. I’ve talked about this from heaven to earth and back again. @mlprarepairartsies made a really good post about her motivations which you can find here. I just think she’s selfish and likes to blame others. I definitely don’t think she deserved the “redemption” she got considering she didn’t really apologise for what she put Sunset through. Like, yes okay maybe she apologised for using the stone but like........ you tore away all of Sunset’s hard work, forcing her to be and feel completely alone despite all of the hardships she had already faced and the countless times she put herself in danger to save the school. She completely disregarded all of the good Sunset did because she didn’t reach out to HER specifically? Bitch I’ll floor it
----
Juniper Montage isn’t the best villain, but she’s still better and (arguably) more justified than Wallflower. Her motivations were shallow-- but at least she saw the GROUP at fault for what happened to her.
Her design is cute. I really loved her little film-reel hair ties! They were so cute. I also really love her personality. She has a little bit of attitude, which is something I REALLY love in a character. Even before the girls got her fired, she still had her attitude when talking about how her uncle wouldn’t give her a chance at the role she wanted. Not even at her uncle though! Just the situation as a whole. It shows she clearly has things she wants and gets mad when things don’t work out for her.
Her apology seemed genuine too. She’s genuinely just.... a girl who finds it hard to make friends and thought that in order to make friends she had to be able to impress them-- and what better way than through fame? What makes her endearing is that she felt like she didn’t deserve forgiveness after what she’d done, too! She genuinely did feel guilty about everything!
She was just really fun to watch.
-----
Vignette McFucking Valencia. THIS bitch.
In terms of her design? I think she’s probably the most aesthetic-- but that’s the whole point, isnt it? So that gives her more points
she’s just a CLASS A dumbass and honestly I think its really brave how she didnt even give a shit about being called out ayusdifhjkndf she was just consistently an asshole and didn’t give a shit. she didn’t really get a redemption which I really liked because it wouldn’t really have made sense with her personality for her to just be like “damn... youre right”
she’s a narcissist and I’m here for it. she’s not a likeable character, which is why I love her so much as a villain because..... theres people just like her in the real world
------
SPEAKING OF PEOPLE JUST LIKE HER IN THE REAL WORLD
Cinch. What a fucking asshole. What a great villain. A person in a position of power who uses her influence to blackmail and manipulate people into doing what she wants. How absolutely mouthwatering is that as a villain trope.
Her design just radiates big bitch energy. It really fits with her personality. She just LOOKS like an asshole.
She was an asshole through and through, too !! She didn’t get a redemption! She even LOST her position of power!! So thats MAD s*xy
She’s the kind of villain that you see on the screen and you just yell BOO, so I think she does her job very well
(also im not gonna count Twilight as a villain bc... she was LITERALLY the victim of this movie)
-------
okay so the top 3!!!
GLORIOSA. DAISY.
Her design is so pretty. She looks like someone I could have a cup of hot cocoa with. Someone I can trust.
Her motivation was really noble, honestly. She just wanted to save the camp she was raised on. One of the last things she has left of her parents. How the hell can you fault her for that?
From the little glimpse of the real her you see outside of her “camp counsellor” act, she just seems like a really chilled out and normal person. She puts others first, works hard to ensure peoples happiness, and she just allowed magic to take advantage of her weakness (her desperation to save her camp) and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that! She’s a character you can sympathise and empathise with. Someone who was in a bad situation and just wanted so desperately to fix it without stressing out her younger brother. She didn’t want to make him worry (which she did in the end but she tried her best!!!)
I just really love Gloriosa and I don’t talk about her enough
--------
bada bing bada boom everyone saw this coming. THE DAZZLINGS.
Look. They do evil well. They had one goal and they stuck to it. They wanted power and at the first opportunity they got? They JUMPED on it. The DEDICATION. Was their motivation dumb? Not really. They’re evil and “wanting to take over the world” seems pretty evil to me?
Their designs are really nice (except aria what the FUCK are you wearing sweetie). They’re so fucking charismatic that I’m actually MAD they lost the battle of the bands!! Recount the votes!!! they deserved the win !!!
on top of that, they had literally the best soundtrack for their movie.
They each have such distinct personalities and their dynamic with each other as well as how they interact with other characters and the world around them is just..... so entertaining to watch. Adagio is snarky as hell and sarcasm drips off of her. Aria is just this loser who likes fashion and has an attitude. I can vibe. Sonata is just.... Sonata. I needn’t say more. Absolute dumbasses are my type.
Even after they lose their powers they just... decided they actually really liked singing. And even then, they still have a fucking attitude!! They didn’t thank sunset and the girls for “opening their eyes” to life without magic or thank them for making them think introspectively. They literally tell sunset to get a life and drive off in a fucking van. That’s SO funny. Literally no other villain is doing it like them.
--------
idk if this is a shock but... Sunset Shimmer is my favorite EQG villain.
Her goal was power, but to me, I don’t think it was power that she ever really wanted. She just wanted to prove to Celestia that she was great and wanted Celestia to appreciate her for the talent she had. She just wanted to feel wanted and appreciated.
She was ambitious and selfish, self-serving and mean, yes! She was! But she always knew what to do to achieve her goals. She was manipulative, and so so smart with how she went about things. The students and even the teachers were fully aware of the kind of person Sunset was, but still she “ruled the school”. The POWER she has.
She’s just so very... human, and I think that’s ultimately why I love Sunset so much. She finds out the one person she wanted validation from the most actually replaced her-- took her destiny from her. Of course she’d be hurt! Of course she’d feel even worse about herself. All she cared about was Celestia and Celestia’s validation, and to Sunset, wouldn’t it appear that the princess-- someone she has spent every moment of her life thinking about-- didn’t even spare her a second thought? Imagine how that would feel
She bluffs, and lies, and does all she can to keep up this facade of unshakeable confidence; but in all actually, Sunset is just so insecure. She thinks so little of herself. And despite all of her hardwork, she’s still defeated. She’s proven that there are things more powerful than ambition and talent. And the first opportunity she receives in order to right her wrongs? She takes it. She jumps on every chance she gets to be a better person. She works hard to be better and do better.
And that’s what makes her such a likeable character; because even after she’s redeemed, her personality doesn’t completely change. She’s just using that energy towards other things-- better things. And it pays off for her.
You love watching her grow into the person she is at the end of the show. Seeing her grow into herself without worrying about impressing others or proving herself. You just feel so proud of how far she’s come. That’s what makes her such a good villain.
-------
so this was LONG as hell but TLDR;
The scale (from worst to best) goes Wallflower  —> Juniper  —> Vignette  —> Cinch  —> Gloriosa  —> The dazzlings  —> Sunset

Spoilers
yesterday I saw the new dracula show on netflix, and i feel like i have a lot of things to say
Let's begin by saying that yes, i know the last episode wasn't what we all expected, but i don't think that it ruined the show. The very last scene (spoiler: dracula and zoe dead """in the sun""") reminds me A LOT of Hannibal's last scene. Hannibal: a show that i also LOVE. And i know that hannibal's last chapter was also a little bit weird, but it also didn't mess un completely with the series.
In case you don't follow me or in case you don't know, I'm a BIG sherlock bbc fan. And it is a show that was also very criticised because of the last season, a season that i loved too. I was SO HAPPY with the cinematic parallels™ between Sherlock and Dracula. I read some minutes ago a post that said something like "this show (dracula) was exactly what gatiss and moffat are. They did what they always do, the show was awesome. It was witty, funny, but also dark". I AGREE. It was gory. I love gore sm.
I believe that Dracula is a show that lets you see exactly what they (Mofftis) always do. It was awesome. I genuinely enjoyed a lot.
Ok, so, after expressing the LOVE i have for this production, I'm gonna go in order with the events that shook me the most. (I red Dracula by Bram Stoker years ago, so I don't remember a lot of canon stuff)
》 I read on an interview that people thought that Dracula and Jonathan had had sex... i never got it that way lol. I feel that they (the producers) decided to show it that way (yk when jonathan was dreaming with mina, his fiancee, but in reality he was being blood-drained by dracula) (also when sister agatha asks him explicitly if he had sex with the vampire) just for fun.
》 The fact that Dracula was so old in the beggining and after one (1) sip of blood he looked 25 years younger... boy i wanna know what kind of eternal life potion was that. Joke. Sorry, I'll continue.
》 WHAT THE HECK WERE ALL THOSE BOXES WITH VAMPIRES ON THE INSIDE???? I was shooketh and disgASTED
Tumblr media
》 The baby vampire???
Tumblr media
》 As i said before, the Cinematic Parallels between this show and sherlock HAD ME QUAKING. You know, I really felt at some moment, in the beggining, when Agatha was interrogating Jonathan, that she was John Watson. She was helping Jonathan to put all of the pieces together. She was helping him to built the story. I also felt that at the same time she was Sherlock. She was really smart and she was asking the right questions. She never tried to sound nice, she wanted answers. She also made fun of dracula and that shit was funny af. Anyways, this might be just an illusion because I'm completely blind by that show (sherlock) and i see it everywhere.
》 "I know a very good detective in England" I cried
》 DRACULA COMING OUT OF A WOLF WHILE OPENING HIM IN HALF. An aesthetic, honestly.
》 Sister Agatha was so smart and dumb at the same time... I mean, i completely adore her but she bullied dracula so bad i was afraid he would rip her in half at any minute. Still... witty af. We stan.
》 Agatha finally found God, even though she had been a nun for ages.
》 When I saw Anderson was the captain of the ship... yaaaaaassss
》 WHY THE HECK DID THEY NEED TO HAVE BOXES OF SOIL IN THAT SHIP????
》 I LOVED the scene where they (agatha and dracula) played chess.
》 Jesus Christ can you believe the AUDACITY??? Everyone on board realized there was a killer among them... there was this guy... really creepy... dark... never eats... his eyes turn red when he sees blood... no one believes, even for 1 second that maybe HE IS THE KILLER.
》 Piotr... sweetie I'm so sorry you didn't deserve to see all that shit
》 "A vampire's kiss is an opioid" well i've never done drugs but sign me tf up im sorry
》 I really enjoyed the 2nd chapter. It was so good to see dracula making conversation and being in contact with other people. I genuinely felt that dracula was some sort of moriarty villain (omg that sherlock shit again????yes). He was so funny, i genuinely feel that Claes deserved that role.
》 Ok so talking about the last chapter... when dracula comes out of the water at the beach and an helicopter flies over him... i had several war flashbacks i assure you.
Tumblr media
》 So... Zoe (Agatha's descendant) had 123 years to catch him... and he escaped??????? While mocking them with that camera?????? Sorry but I had to laugh
》 The fact that he made himself so comfortable in the xxi century... same honestly. When he admired the sun on the telly i felt that.
Yes i know that all i say is same yass felt that and I'm so sorry i just can't help it
》 I feel that they did Lucy dirty. Yes, she was a bitch. A bitch who had gotten 3 marriage proposals on the same night. But she deserved better. I'm sorry I don't make the rules.
》 THE ENDING????? WTFFFFF i feel that it could have been so much better, and maybe so much more realistic; Dracula "died" willingly, he surrended. It was weird to say the least.
Anyways, feel free to tell me your opinion and to point out anything i might have forgotten about.
Ps: sorry if I can't make myself clear but english is not my first language

Hello yes I literally cannot sleep right now because I’m upset as hell, why am I upset? Because Erik fucking deserved better.
“Ah but he’s a serial killer that lied to and manipulated a young girl” yes, this is technically true, but sit the fuck down, buckle up, and let me rant.
Now, of course all of this varies from movie to play to book but for the sake of my argument we’re gonna go with my unpopular opinion fave i.e. the 2004 adaptation of the movie (which will likely be where a lot of people will have seen it so SHUSH).
Now, the movie boops around in time a lot but for arguments sake we’re gonna follow Erik’s life chronologically.
Let’s start off with we little bb Erik, shall we? Now, a lot of his history is only hinted at, and I’m going to try to keep my own headcanons out of this as much as I can manage, but how about how his own mother couldn’t bear to look at him.
“A face which earned a mother’s fear and loathing, a Mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing”
Would it be wrong to assume that that means that even before momma Destler changes her infant son’s diaper she has to cover his face because she’s too disgusted to look at him. Or how about the fact it’s likely he came from an impoverished family (let’s be real those weren’t the best of times okay it’s a safe assumption he wasn’t a one percenter), and he likely didn’t have any real clothes (ahem, his burlap sack pants in the Gypsy scene?) but his mother hated his face so much she was willing to buy him a mask just to cover it? And how did he wind up with the gypsies in the first place, hmmmmm???
The movie really doesn’t say that so we’re gonna leave you to figure that out, NO HEADCANONS FROM ME TODAY FRIEND (I have so many. About this whole movie. Please come talk to me I’m very lonely.)
Now, onto the gypsy’s themselves. Can we just. Erik was what, seven? Eight? In that scene? Maybe younger? And they were brutally beating him while hundreds (Thousands, it’s not like this is the only show he’s been used as an attraction at) of people laughed at his pain. I mean. Is it hard to see why he has such a fucked up sense of morality when he spent his childhood seeing all those people laugh at his agony. And the MONKEY TOY I WANNA DIE. Okay okay. Anyway. They appear to be using a long tail bull whip which HURT okay? Those are not for people (or anything but this isn’t the post for that). Those will rip you to shreds. Now, I’m not a whip expert so I DON’T WANT ANYONE COMIN’ UP IN HERE LIKE NO ITS ___ WHIP AND ITS ____ BITCH THEY’RE W H I P P I N G A YOUNG C H I L D I DON’T CARE IF IT’S MADE OF COTTON CANDY AND RAINBOWS. Like honestly are we gonna blame him for murdering that piece of shit? For real I would have killed him for the creepy tongue thing alone and Erik suffered years of abuse at his hand, keep in mind, we only saw ONE part of ONE show, WHERE HE WASN’T EVEN STRUGGLING REALLY, we have no idea what they did to that poor boy at other shows, behind the scenes, etc. And again. That monkey toy. I wanna die.
Now, on to his living situation (here’s where we’re gonna boop around a little, we’re gonna ignore Christine’s existence a little longer). He lived, by himself, in the sewers (call them catacombs if you want they’re fucking sad gross places either way I don’t care). He was a kid, locked away from anyone else. So let’s think about this. He learned that he’s so terrible even his mother can’t love him just because of his face, he was beaten to shit and laughed at to make money because he’s so terrible, just because of his face, he watched a shit load of people laugh at his pain without trying to help (until Giry and even she only helped after he did the hard part), and then he’s locked away, alone, in a creepyass, wet, dongeon. I mean. Would you be holding it together? I sure as fuck wouldn’t. And yeah I’m sure Giry visited him and whatever but how often do you really think she went down there? She was studying to be a ballerina at a world famous opera house, she didn’t have free time, and still that’s only one person making face to face contact with him for what? 15 years? A long ass time regardless.
And now we boop to Christine. Again this part isn’t really shown, but with “whenever I’d come down here alone, to light a candle for my father”, are you willing to agree that when young Erik saw her, by herself, having little to no experience of kindness out of other people, really reached out to be malicious? He was probably scared out of his fucking mind, but he saw this little girl grieving as he’d grieved his own life, and he decided to try to comfort her. She was probably the one that came up with the Angel Of Music thing (I say probably because it’s never explicitly said, but come on, there’s no way he would have randomly come up with that, you can also listen to Emmy talk about her “latching on” because she wanted so desperately for it to be a Thing and that they really were good friends etc but I’m just gonna stick to stuff you can get directly from the movie) and he went with it. Now, there are a ton of reasons he could have gone with it (“Learn to see to find the man behind the monster this repulsive carcass who seems a beast but secretly yearns for heaven secretly, secretly dreams of beauty”..........) but none are directly stated so I’ll fuck off and let you decide.
Now, he taught her to sing. Ask any artist ever and they’ll tell you if they’re sharing their work with you they’re sharing a very intimate part of themselves with you. It doesn’t matter the style, art is personal, and he cared enough about this girl to not only show her his art but to teach it to her.* I cannot fathom that love okay and all of this from a creature who was born into a world of hate and darkness and here he is creating beauty and sharing his work I love him okay. And yes, he falls in love with her. I’m not gonna share my thoughts on that love (She was the first person to treat him like a human, to be his friend and never once did she judge him for his looks, just keep that in mind.) but he falls in love with her, more on that in a little bit.
* No One Would Listen isn’t technically in the movie so I’m not saying anything about it, but a lot of my opinions are solidified in it, so if you Haven’t heard it you need to it’s a beautiful song sung to the tune of Learn to be Lonely which Minnie SLAYS jesus shit *aggressively heart eyes* but it directly says that he wanted to share his art and teach the wold but she was the only one who listened
As for torturing Carlotta……………. I mean, me too, I can’t fault him for that……
THEIR MEETING. TIME OUT. THE MIRROR SCENE. THE CHOREOGRAPHY. THE SMOKE. THE CHANGE FROM ANGEL TO PHANTOM. THIS SCENE IS ENTIRELY MY AESTHETIC. Okay I’m good sorry. So. They go down to his home. He takes this girl. Into his HOME. He’s been mistreated his whole life and he willingly leads this girl down into his sanctuary. Think about that for a minute.
Okay. Anyway, yes the wedding dress is hella creepy but LISTEN. He wasn’t raised with people. He’s stuck in the opera house, he doesn’t see real relationships and even if he does he only sees bits and pieces of them out of the people WHILE THEY’RE THERE he’s never seen or heard about or learned about a real proposal, he’s only seen countless operas, and you know what the fuck happens in romantic plays/operas/movies/musicals/books/stories/literally anything? They move fast, they skip time, they’re over the top. People don’t watch shit that’s real life, no one would want to see that, but that’S ALL HE KNOWS. I’ll let you think of it what you will, but I think he was genuinely trying to woo her as best he knew how.
Mask off scene. Okay. Now. Aside from the fact Gerard grabs the wrong side of his face at one point, (seriously, go rewatch it) Erik does shove Christine, which is not okay buuuuut he’s fucking terrified, and I’m not convinced he meant to shove her, more get her away from him before she saw his face. (we also get some insight on his view of himself and I. Want. To. Die.) but I’ll leave you to take what you will from that scene.
*sigh* killing Joseph is the next thing I want to touch on and this is the one where I want to boop his deformed little nose a little but… I mean… I have a couple points still.
One: the dude was a creep
two: he went looking for him
three: ERIK WARNED THEM IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS “A disaster beyond your imagination will occur” (can we talk about the dolls. Erik. Fucking nerd.)
Four: Joseph openly mocked and taunted Erik (you think he didn’t hear that no nose comment *sassy finger snap*)
Five: He grew up only knowing violence. People laughed at his pain. Again his only real knowledge is opera and again people kill in those to get what they want? He’s just a wee potato trying his best.
Now let me bash my son for a moment, he was getting what he wanted, Christine was gonna play the countess, but instead we got All I Ask of You and I died inside (There may be another rant on my utter hatred of Raoul to come but this is already 1.5k words and I’m only like halfway through the movie so MOVING ON)
Alright, so All I Ask of You Reprise is technically the next place where Erik says/does anything but let’s talk about what’s happening right in front of him right now. He’s in love with this woman. He has tried his fucking hardest, he’s made her famous, he’s tried to woo her, he’s been there for YEARS, then this rich boy with a pretty face comes in and she’s falling into his arms in no time? Like yes it’s a bit fuckboi of him but also take into account what she said about him before the actual song. (“His eyes will find us there those eyes that burn” “I can’t escape from him I never will” “his world of unending night to the world where the daylight dissolves into darkness” “Can I ever escape from that face so distorted deformed it was hardly a face”) I mean… I’d be fucking hurt and pissed… So yeah the “you will curse the day you did not do all that the phantom asked of you” is a bit much but… HE’S PISSED and hurt and heartbroken.
Why So Silent and the ring I’m going to leave at he’s fucking hurt but yes I want to boop his nose for that one too… like Erik stop being a creep no one’s chains are yours.
As well as Journey to the Cemetery and Wandering Child like here he’s wrong and I have no argument against him being wrong, my only comment is that he could have killed the taxi driver but he just knocked him out so like… Yay?
Don Juan… Okay come on he knew it was a trap so he had to have just trusted she wouldn’t go through with it but… *Sigh* SON STOP KILLING PEOPLE. AND NO KIDNAPPING TEENAGE GIRLS.
Okay but Down Once More we get to see a lot of the stuff I’ve already mentioned (his mom, how he feels about himself, etc) and he’s furious and scared and hurt and embarrassed and he’s a cornered animal at this point. His home is gone, he knows that, he has to leave and this is his last chance to get the only person who’s ever heard him, who’s ever been a friend to him and shared his love of music, to come with him. Point of No Return Reprise is another thing I want to boop him for, but he does let them go, and he does give up and let her choose what she wants to be happy with one last ditch effort of just being honest (“Christine I love you”) and then he watches them go. The only person he has in the world, leaving him back in his world of darkness.
So, in conclusion, ERIK IS A SMOL PRECIOUS BEAN WHO DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER AND YES HE MADE MISTAKES BUT HE’S DOING HIS BEST AND PEOPLE ARE FAR TOO MEAN TO HIM I HOPE HE KNOWS HOW MUCH I LOVE HIM

Navigating my complicated relationships with Beyonce and Michelle Obama

Navigating my complicated relationships with Beyonce and Michelle Obama
Even my Superheroes have weaknesses…
I remember the first time I saw Destiny’s Child on TV. I’m an 80s baby so girl groups weren’t new to me but there was something different about Destiny’s Child. They embodied the soulful voices of girl groups of yesteryear while appealing to mainstream media as En Vogue had done—plus they were young. They weren’t a niche girl group that was attached to a specific music trend, they were setting the trends.
Destiny’s Child unapologetically became part of American’s English lexicon with words like bugaboo and bootylicious. Even with the changing of the group members and their internal drama, Beyoncé handled herself like a true professional and that’s nothing short than admirable.
But isn’t that typical of Black women? When we are put under pressure we make diamonds? You can rightfully argue it’s a hurtful cliché used negatively against us that sets us up for seemingly unattainable goals that nobody else has to abide by. But that ruthless, passionate work ethic is what I and many others love about Beyoncé. She consistently beats the odds as a Black woman and she’s that chick.
That’s why my relationship with her is so complicated and it’s not just with her, it’s the former First Lady Michelle Obama, too. Two international renowned Black women who undoubtedly will go down in history for their achievements and both who have been criticized unfairly by whiteness and racist pundits are not without their flaws.
But I don’t like talking about my heroes’ flaws under a white gaze because their flaws aren’t up for them to analyze because their criticism can’t be racially unbiased. For me, my criticisms( at least, I think) seem to be layered. It’s hard for me not to want to mention them when I discuss their husbands’ actions because, in my heart, I don’t feel they are unaware of their husbands’ plans. I refuse to believe these smart and successful businesswomen aren’t protecting their families’ interests when their men make these questionable and in some instances, regressive declarations.
But Patriarchy?
Yeah, patriarchy. Patriarchy is trash. I’ve toyed with the concept that for Beyoncé, patriarchy is a major hindrance to her personally and professionally. For the sake of argument, let’s say Jay-Z did initially engage with Beyoncé when she was 18-years-old, he was already about 30 and no matter how successful she was at the time it’s never a good combination for older men to date younger women. Their intentions are usually rooted in grooming young women; molding them and having the ability to manipulate them emotionally and mentally (which to some extent he did when he admitted he cheated on her) paired with the fact she’s witnessed her own mother sacrifice and tolerates similar behaviors from her father. I’ve taken all this into consideration when it comes to analyzing Beyonce from a Black womanist lens but none of that can really explain her branding aesthetic of social justice.
If she didn’t use social justice in her work, yall would call her a coon!
Not necessarily. During the Civil Rights Era, a lot of artists used news and politics as a motivator and backdrop for their art. You can listen to many Black artists between the 60s and 70s and find numerous records that became the soundtrack for what we know identify as the soulful sound of liberation. Not every artist was an activist and that’s ok and my point. You can make music for the people if you wish but it’s a different ballgame when you believe you are the voice of said people.
I don’t hate Beyonce because she’s a multi-millionaire. I believe she’s worked extremely hard to be where she is in her life and I hope she’s happy. However, as a millionaire, it’s impossible for her as a brand to fundamentally be “for the people”. Wealthy people are never for the (poor or working-class) people and have no real interest in liberation because liberation, especially Black liberation involves eating the rich. As the poor, marginalized and working-class culture shifts, so does the identity of what is socially responsible and what is not. The wealthy need the poor to exist for them to remain wealthy. Without the poor and working-class, who would attend Beyonce’s concerts? Who would buy her merchandise? When was the last time you seen wealthy influencers rocking Ivy Park? That’s no shade at all but it is the truth.
I wish for Beyonce to use her position and power and flip shit upside-down. Now that’s she’s secured her seat at the table I want her to flip that muthafucka over and open the doors for everyone else and not just a select few. When powerful women marry and are involved with powerful men who have questionable actions as they relate to marginalized people, you have to ask yourself, are these women complicit or are they putting the batteries in their men’s back?
I love what Beyoncé represents for Black girls in media. I love how she embraces hood aesthetics, social media conversations and creates art in a visual and musical form we can amp ourselves up with. My biggest (and honestly, probably my only complaint) is Beyonce’s tendency to use social media activism as a branding tool. Yes, I’m aware the Carters have donated money ( as they should) to Black Lives Matter and other families who’ve been victims to state sanction violence. I’m aware they’ve donated more money than I’ve ever made in a year ( and again, they should) but the idea that Beyoncé is a spokesperson for the poor or working-class Black woman or can relate to everyday struggles is, in my opinion, far-fetched and disingenuous. As long as the Black wealthy push the pull-up-your-own-bootstraps and coddle whiteness, they can never truly represent me.
However, the difference between Beyoncé and the former First Lady and even Oprah is that Beyonce is more likely to evolve— maybe. I always say that Black people are fundamentally conservative. White supremacy is ingrained into our DNA generations deep. Like many of you, I was proud to vote for Obama, twice! In his eight years in office, I saw the Obamas get treated with disrespect, endure racism domestically and nationally and be judged by standards they wouldn’t give the current joker in the office now if their lives depended on it. Michelle Obama was easily my favorite of the couple; she’s smarter than her husband, tall, beautiful and confident. I watched politicians, pundits and white feminists try to break her spirit and all she did was flip her perfect-coiffed hair at them. Who could have asked for a better first lady?
But as racial tensions steadily rose and the opportunity to stand for the working class and marginalized presented itself, Obama didn’t always take it. In all fairness, he had constant pushback from republicans in congress and they threatened him with impeachment every day. For a while, I reasoned with their lack of actions on certain issues. Let’s face it, you can’t be a left-leaning president and you definitely can’t be a left-leaning Black president, so he picked and chose his battles. But I started to feel the excuses I was making for the Obamas were biting me in the ass when Obama would get on TV and say certain things using certain lingo and speech patterns to essentially talk-down to poor Black people. When Obama told Black folks to call their cousin Pookie to go out and vote, he basically reiterated what white liberals do to Black voters; put the results of voting on the marginalized population in the country.
Ok, but what does this have to do with Michelle? When Michelle released her now New York Times Bestselling memoir, everybody and their mama went to buy the book and if they were lucky enough, they were able to see her in-person on her book tour. Some of the passages from her memoir come straight from Black respectability playbook of middle-class Blacks who feel they work harder than poor Blacks without acknowledging their access to resources. Michelle stated that racism and racial inequality are psychological and we have to help others overcome. That’s bullshit.
It’s bullshit because Black people didn’t invent racism; just like women didn’t invent sexism. It’s not up to the marginalized party to help the oppressor overcome their bigotry. In the United States, Black people have been writing about racial equality since they could write and the path to ending racism lies within white people. However, when Black people achieve certain access to privileges, they assume all Black people can do the same. For all transparency reasons, I grew up in a middle class household. Both are my parents are college-educated and my father had access to generational wealth. My experiences growing up looks different from others who did not have the resources I had. It took me being financially vulnerable as an adult to understand how the system treats poor people even when you are trying to help yourself. When you grow up in middle-class Black America you are reminded daily that you aren’t like other Blacks and anti-Black rhetoric is a foundation of distinguishing yourself from others.
If you are still here reading, thank you because I went in on a rant, but if you are still here reading I want to make it clear that I can appreciate these women for what they mean to Black people as far as representation goes. But we can’t be satisfied with the surface-level representation. We have to do more than root for everyone who is Black. We have to encourage and bring wealthy Black people to task beyond the aesthetic of Black liberation. Wearing berets and quoting our historical leaders in a bop isn’t enough. We are facing dark and dangerous times and if our Black wealthy won’t condemn all forms of white supremacy, they might as well take a picture with them. You know, like Mrs. Obama does with former President Bush.
