A gritty modern thriller about a woman trying desperately – perhaps a bit unhinged by worry – to get her teenage daughter out of a cult whose leader killed her husband
And then you realize partway through that it’s a retelling of The Magic Flute

Do you think one could attain decent-ish ability to read Japanese just by studying kanji? Specifically asking because the kanji learnin' service "wanikani" is the single Japanese resource that works best with my brain, but then there are separate resources for grammar and vocab and and and.....
You will get REAAAALLLLLYYY far knowing only the kanji but you're going to have to know hiragana and katakana at some point too. Tofugu, the company that did Wanikani, has two mnemonics-based guides for the kana that are basically Wanikani Lite. They're how I learned the kana and I swear by them.
Here's hiragana: https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/
And katakana: https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-katakana/
Hiragana are especially vital to learning kanji; you won't be able to use 99% of Japanese-English dictionaries without them. BUT they're pretty easy and the rules for using them are consistent. You won't have to remember any irregular exceptions for any of them.
I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard really good things about the Crystal Hunters manga series as a fun/low stress way to learning Japanese vocab and grammar. It eases the reader into new concepts and then repeats them throughout the chapter so you remember them. There are free vocab and study guides/lists for each chapter too. Might be worth checking out once you get some kanji and the kana under your belt? The first book is also free.

Good luck!!

I’ve seen a number of posts lately referring to holi as “a south asian holiday” and it is AGGRAVATING because no!! no it’s not!!!
it has its roots in hinduism and yeah, it’s celebrated by other dharmic religions other than hinduism as well, but that does NOT mean it’s south asian!!
and it always stems from a place of ignorance or erasure. always always always. either from people being unaware (which. wikipedia exists fam. they’ve got it right. go look it up. I’m so tired of excusing ignorance too, it’s literally in the first sentence of the article) or from people trying to erase the hindu origins of the festival. hell I’ve seen it happen to diwali too and guess what!! SAME SITUATION!!
you wouldn’t call eid anything other than a muslim holiday, you wouldn’t call easter anything other than a christian holiday, you wouldn’t call yom kippur anything other than a jewish holiday.
treat us the same way. let us have our holidays.

Everyone's talking about Wish right now.... The only thing I can say about WISH.......let's hope it's like a Frozen 1 type thing. Where the trailers were ABSOLUTE ASS but then the film turned out really good. TT0TT
I mean.....there is a difference between the two. While the west got weird trailers that didn't matter for Frozen (Olaf vs Sven carrot thing), JPN and other countries got trailers that actually showcased the plot and drama in an interesting way.... And Wish.....well...... Wish at least gives us a villain and a part of an argument.....and I can't see that argument leading anywhere.....great tbh. So maybe not the best comparisons but let's hope for the Frozen 1 vibe!
Anyway I'm not liking what I'm seeing so far, but I'm hoping its better than the ass disaster Frozen 2 and Ralph 2 were. ;w;

excuse me for this post but i have been waiting in the airport all afternoon after a 6 hour flight and it's wearing on me. so speaking of the Holy Prepuce i think it's interesting to consider the existence of such a relic because that would ostensibly be the only physical artifact of jesus's body left after he ascended, so it makes sense that it would attract devotees despite being a foreskin. and of course there's the implications of that being the only body part left to us. you could theoretically touch the actual body of christ (eucharist aside) but only his dick. idk i'm just saying i can empathize with catherine of siena

Yep, Maia Arson Crimew, the person who brought us the no fly list and the brain-tickling phrase “holy fucking bingle”, is also a prodigious creator of tracks. This is my favourite, with the next probably being this one.
What a wonderful world we live in...
Oh, and there’s a Wikipedia article, because of course there is. Turns out it’s famous!
