Meow, meow, have a cute cat Mario illustration to celebrate marioday. I been in the mood to draw Mario lately probably because i’m excited for the Mario that comes out in April and definitely reminds me my childhood when I play Mario galaxy 2 on the wii and Mario games I played on ds and 3ds growing such the Mario and Luigi RPG series.
Your probably why cat Mario? One it my favourite Mario power up and I love cats and currently favourite mario game is Super Mario 3D world plus bowser fury the controls are fun and gameplay is top notch, I just running around as cat Mario climbing and jumping all over the place.
Also I to do some experimenting on this piece by using some water pen first as a base and my regular Holbein watercolours set and added some mixed media elements as well with acrylic markers and coloured pencils to add a bit more shading and texture to this illustration.

opinions on this portrait of mary rose tudor? it just popped up on my pinterest feed and i'm intrigued about its validity.

Tumblr media
It's actually drawing by Holbein of Mary I. The other Mary Tudor.
Tumblr media
It's in Royal Collection Trust(and on their webpage it looks trooly peach...idk why) and it is very real.
Question is, are any of Holbein's sketches correctly identified? ...Well, the big labels come from centuries later. However they are based upon 16th century labels.
During 16th century a courtier who met these people personally...(I believe it was somebody of name Cheyne...but i am not certain. Don't quote me on this.) had labelled some of Holbein's sketches in his own hand. He didn't have access to all of them.
But he marked them in pencil and thus unfortunately most of them rubbed off over the centuries, though in few it is still visible!
For example Lady Rich(in that part of background I didn't colour):
Tumblr media
(Holbein also left some some writings within his sketches on occasion, and marks to know what colours to use later...)
Hence we consider these labels to be truthful...Of course we cannot rule out that somebody played with them...but we hope it is not the case.
However, Mary's sketch...is recognizably her.
Tumblr media
It matches other portraits...it's just that part of her nose and one of her brows has rubbed off-why you can't tell immediately...and even the highlighted parts(possibly done in ink) are now quite hard to spot properly.
This is engraving(that's why it's flipped) by Wenceslaus Hollar, probably based upon finished painting:
Tumblr media
(By the way he totally downplayed size of pearls on her necklace).
But gives us a clue as to the possible shape of pendant...I think it is this one:
Tumblr media
Or very similiar one. By the way at some point it seems somebody labelled it as Catherine Howard:
Tumblr media
But the fabric of gable hood twists almost exactly as in the sketch...and rest is good match to either Holbein's drawing or Hollar's engraving.
This is same drawing after I highlighted the more visible lines:
Tumblr media
However, I am not 100% certain i got the tip of upper veil(at top of head) correct, I am having trouble determining exact shape of pearls on left of the neck(upper strand).
And mainly the shape of the golden pendant in middle. Either Holbein moved it and it partially shows...or it had some edge and lines are now blurred.
...But despite all this. It's still so good, a skilled artist could recreate the portrait. You'd just need to use those engraving to look at the pattern of frontlets...and look at other portraits of Mary to look at shape of her nose and other brow...
You could do it. ...If you chose to do it without hands.
Entire lower part of drawing is very rubbed off...But I have spend considerable amount of time trying to figure out what was there...looking at it under different filters and such...
But it never ended up looking good.
My digital attempt after I gave up on hands:
Tumblr media
(back when I didn't yet realise I should highlight the lines first.)
By the way...neither Hollar nor that other engraving overexagerate the breasts...in the drawing you can definitely recognize the shape if you focus on it in closeup. But back then it wasn't considered provocative or indecent.
Royal Collection Trust thinks the drawing was done after Mary returned to her father's favour in 1537.
Well, Holbein was in England firstly in 1526/27(Mary would be 10-11 years old, hence way too young for this). And then from 1532 onward to his death in 1543. It's unlikely that Mary would be painted during Anne Boleyn's reign in 1533-1536.
However I heard recently Catherine of Aragon had some jewelry designed by Holbein in 1532. If she had authority over such things at that time...Mary could equally be painted at the time. And she'd be 16.
Hence Mary's drawing should be either from 1532 or 1537-1543.
In theory you should be able to tell from these parts of gable hood, if it is closer to 1533 or closer to 1537:
Tumblr media
(Smaller in 1537, bigger and sticking to side more in 1533). Here, i am not confident enough to say either way.Coudl be that part rubbed off...but idk.
Enough information?

Your art is gorgeous and deserves much more interaction! If it's alright to ask, what brands of paint markers and colored pencils do you use to get such vibrant colors? They give an absolutely womderful effect to your work
Oh thank you so much^^
I use posca and molotow all4one acrylic markers. Coloured pencils vary, but mostly Faber Castell Polychromos and Holbein.

#EzRepost @nollisworld with @ezrepostapp My two days work on the flower pic from the book Flora by Maria Trolle. The flowers are done in Prismacolor Premier and Holbein pencils. The background was influenced by a heart under a waterfall from Faynn (Instagram), done in other colours, but I wanted to create stripes. I used glitter watercolours first, later copic markers and at least Posca Acrylic pencils. And the last step was ironing my pic. It was a very exciting experiment with all the mixed stuff. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc3MyqXDjhi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Watercolour of a small koi I made as part of my presents for Dimelza Díaz during the #creativesantaswap created by Maria Rod.
Had fun with it! This time I used again my White Nights watercolours (mixing no more than 7 - 8 colours from both their normal and pastels colours). Just for the final details I used Prismacolor pencil colours and Holbein white gouache.

Also hi yes 3 for Napollya too (a painter, a fire, a box) because fuck yeah Napoleon as an artist au?? OR BETTER YET MAKE PERIL THE PAINTER YOOOOOOO he would have such an interesting eye no? (I enjoy art purely from an aesthetic viewpoint and maybe appreciate some symbolism or whatnot but this is all to say that I don’t actually know a ton about art but appreciate it nonetheless)
When I tell you I love both of those options…💝💝 And there is SO much to be explored. I was briefly overwhelmed with all the possibilities. Renaissance AU with a marriage proposal portrait sitting sessions?! Avant-garde artist in the 20s and nouveau riche?! In the end, I settled on the canon timeline, mostly inspired by Napoleon’s career path.
-
Art Thief and Art Forger AU
-
Unfortunately, if you want to do something extremely well, you most likely will need some help along the way. Now, that’s not the worst thing in the world. Napoleon has worked with Gaby plenty of times and she’s an absolute angel. Fantastic behind the wheel, incredible with explosives and breathtaking in a cocktail dress.
And sure, it could work with just them – Napoleon’s quick fingers and Gaby’s fast cars could run this show, no problem. But see, there’s more to a brilliant team than a thief and a getaway car.
“Ah, you brought pink panther.” Illya doesn’t turn as they enter, doesn’t even look up from his easel. The late morning sun spills light through dust-milky windows and makes his hair glow a particularly intense shade of gold.
Peeling wallpaper, dust-sticky wooden floors and bay windows. Next to Illya, a desk covered with prints and books, some magazines. Napoleon walks around the easel to look at the display, not wanting to step into Illya’s light. “Good to see you, too. I see you did your research.” A miniature museum on Holbein, exhibited in black and white on glossy pages. In between, loose paper filled with Illya’s delicate-neat handwriting in pencil and sketchbooks with paint-stiff pages.
This time, Illya does look up, leaning to the side to glare at him from around the easel. “I always do research.” Up close, Napoleon notices traces of green paint in his hair, where he must’ve run his stained fingers through it. “How about you do yours, too?”
“Of course you do, I wasn’t trying to imply anything.” Napoleon pulls one of the loose sheets closer, but he’s not terribly good at reading Cyrillic handwriting, so it’s little more than silver ornaments on paper. There are some sketches of noses on the back and he traces them with his fingertip. “And your suspicion wounds me.”
There’s a soft rustle of cloth and Napoleon looks up to find Illya facing him, faded t-shirt and dust-stained trousers. “You’re not burning down my studio again.” He indicates the room with his brush. “It’s close to the Bücherei.”
Napoleon clicks his tongue. “Now, Rubens, that was once.”
“Rubens?” Illya scoffs. “Don’t embarrass yourself, the job is in two months.” He returns his attention to the easel, elegant nose and round chin.
Napoleon hums, pulling one of the magazines closer to page through it. “I can tell the difference between Holbein and Rubens, don’t worry. I was talking about you. You know, the self-portrait with his wife?”
He can tell Illya stopped fiddling with his palette to look at him again, no doubt frowning. “Now, I admit you’re much more handsome. He does have that wine-sweet look on his face and all that, with the rosy-plump cheeks. But the golden hair, the blue eyes, the generally dreamy expression –“
“Dreamy expression?” Illya huffs. “Be quiet, I have to work.”
Napoleon looks up, but Illya’s turning as far away from him as possible under the pretence of observing the canvas. Still, Napoleon can make out the faintest hint of a blush on the back of his neck. He lets the magazine fall closed and straightens. “Alright, I’ll leave you to it.”
With that, he rounds the easel again on his way to the door. By the doorway, he stops and turns. “Ah, just one last thing –“ Now, he rearranges the jacket he’s slung over his arm and his overnight bag a little to open the zipper and pull out a tin. “I picked up some tea in Leningrad. I’ll put it in the kitchen for you, yeah?”
Illya’s shoulders are a tense line and he’s very intently staring at his palette. The tips of his ears are pink. “No need. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Napoleon says, smile audible in his voice, and closes the door on his way out. In the kitchen, he first puts down the tin, then pulls a sketchbook out of his open bag.
The spine is broken and the edges rounded, the fabric thin with use. It’s too risky to flip through it here, with the danger of Gaby slipping in and interrupting him, but he can already tell that it’s going to be interesting. Bold strokes and bold colours, much bolder than what Illya has to paint now, and much bolder than what he usually says.
Napoleon may not be able to read Cyrillic, but he can read art. And other than some criminally inclined young soviet masters, he knows how to take a compliment.
 -
I strayed a bit from the whole box/fire things but I hope it still counts… Also I put way more thought into this than I could express in such a short scene but basically: They’re in Germany to steal a specific painting and exchange it for a forgery. I was thinking of Holbein’s Portrait of Simon George of Cornwall – no clue if it was in Germany at the time, but it is now, and I love it a lot. Originally, I was thinking of having Illya paint a portrait of Napoleon in a renaissance au, which I would’ve based on that painting. But well. I love the idea of Illya as a modern, cubist type of artist but alas, he’s talented and thus has to paint the old masters. But his sketchbook is definitely crammed full of little Napoleon portraits <3<3<3
Ok that’s it. Thank you so much for the prompt!!! I hope you liked it! 💝

Unknown lady in purple-part 3
Check the part 1: Unknown lady from Kunsthistorisches Museum-who is this? and part two Unknown lady in purple-part 2, before reading part 3.
The most probable sitter turned out to be Catherine Howard. Hence I’ve decided to compare lady in purple gown to other alleged depictions of Catherine Howard.  Excluding those which turned out to be Anne of Cleves. Check the post about her and Toledo portrait. Or read this post and see which depiction I skipped.
The drawing of unidentfiied woman by Holbein:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we colour it same way, the outfit could certainly be same, just french hood more simple.  But Catherine of Aragon also had some portraits of herself in much simpler dress than some of her sumptuous outfits .
(But parlet is narrower so this sketch is prior to portrait of lady in the purple.)
There was some foliage pinned pinned to chest and round brooch probably with some text beneath, which is kind of typical of english at some point(many of Holbein’s sketches have this).
Tumblr media
But more importantly the eyes are sketched to very light colour which can be light blue or light grey, matching lady in purple.
The nostrils are prolongated, the chin slightly up(which brings nose tip up too) and different angle might account for seemingly different shape of nose. The eyebrows might have been nearly invisible in finished painting, but their shape is pretty similiar. Both have rather round face, very similiar proportions, likely same mouth. The french hood is set in cca same spot on top of head, hair arranged in similiar manner. The weight of sitters is different(it happens) and might account for thicker neck.
Tumblr media
Based upon features I cannot exclude the possibility of it being same sitter. They look slightly different true. But given it is a sketch and not finished painting, I have to allow bigger margin of difference. Because Holbein could have adressed these differences later on during making of the finished painting.
But how come this drawing is thought to be Catherine Howard, when there is no inscription, and nothing which would give sitter’s identity as royal? Or Howard, nothing! And old photo might hold clue:
Tumblr media
Big letter texts on Holbein’s drawings are not from 16th century. But in 16th century a courtier has labelled the drawings-those he knew identity off.
And it seems to me like there in corner was his label. But since it was in pencil, it could have later rubbed off. Yet by that time, people already thought of this drawing as of Catherine Howard.
But on other hand, this part of drawing could also be sketch of chest jewel and could depict male figure. It certainly looks as if it could be-male head, hat, two eyes, shoulder. Catherine Howard’s inventory if I recall correctly had among it jewel depicting Henry VIII.
Tumblr media
It’s possible either text or jewel one could have been used to then assume it was Catherine Howard. Or possibly that the courtier wrote across the faded sketch of jewel of male. Holbein did details on side of sketches a lot. Not in every sketch and not always in strong hand.
Portrait of a Young Woman  Met Museum:
Tumblr media
And many of you would say the lips immediately rule it out.
Tumblr media
But Met Museum lists on their webpage a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t trust what you see!
Met museum says the painting has been abraded and extensively restored.
(That is nice way to say somebody altered heck out of it! and at one time entire face was overpainted.)
Retouching of the mouth may contribute to the exaggerated pout(the huge upper lip), the background was originally blue, and the gilded inscription has been damaged and reinforced with paint. (And could have been altered too.)
It’s much better to look at painting under infra-red light(it reveals hidden layers):
Tumblr media
And then compare:
Tumblr media
Overall when compared to infra-light version, the features are good match.
It shows upper lip much smaller, and hair much more straight(yet twisted in way closer to later in 1540s), the chin is slightly different too. The nose is more curved. Overall all features look more alike to lady in purple than they did before.
It’s also obvious the eyes are same shape.
The hands look similiar to me even under normal light, although I cannot rule out if they were altered also. Unfortunately under infra-light there is too much underdrawing revealed and you cannot really make their shape.
Tumblr media
Also note she doesn’t seem to be much into wearing rings. Rather odd in Tudor period. I wonder if there is some contemporary description of her jewels.
(Although she could own many and not wear them.)
Tumblr media
This time i see no explanation in the painting as to how it was identified as Catherine Howard, but it is possible it was done based upon that sketch and good likeness to it.
Imo, we are probably looking at same sitter.  Not 100% sure, but I think it likely. If so, there are 3 portraits of same sitter by Holbein’s workshop, hence it is likely to be royal and indeed Henry’s Queen.
Tumblr media
I’d be very interested if somebody used all 3 depictions to recreate her face.
(Without the pout.) It’s kind of funny that from side she looks more atractive than from front, and Anne fo Cleves was exact oposite.
I know the lady in purple doesn’t look as atractive as you’d wish Catherine Howard to be. But which one of us doesn’t have days we look poorly sometimes?
I hope you’ve enjoyed it and please be polite in comments.
Afterthought:
In all 3 depictions the sitter seems as short girl. In two of them as young, pretty, hopeful. Yet expression lady in purple is full of sadness, imo.
Which makes me wonder if she by that point was already surrounded by snakes and suspected something was wrong. Or possibly if there is any true to speculation about her being pregnant early on in her marriage.
(which could also explain why she wouldn’t wear rings, pregnancy often causes limbs to swell.)
If you’re interested, there is good article about the topic and brings many interesting points in the favour of pregnancy:
https://adventuresofatudornerd.com/2020/10/17/guest-post-was-katherine-howard-pregnant-by-henry-viii-in-1540-by-sylvia-barbara-soberston/
Frankly I was shocked reading it, because we have less evidence for some of the pregnancies of Catherine of Aragon! Yet they are thought to be accurate and almost nobody questions them!
Imo these reports are deliberately overlooked, to portray Catherine Howard as scheming, not deserving any sympathy from us.
But if this article is to believed, it’s likely Catherine lost child in 3rd trimester in April or May 1514(and could have been full term!), and ambasador’s words which were wondering about due date and how it could shift time of coronation, were twisted to question pregnancy itself. Even though he described her as big(visibly pregnant) in December 1540(3 months prior wondering about due date. That he’d be still unsure would be pretty strange.)
Possible pregnancy also makes accusations about her so much worse, and way less likely! Because part of them was that she was copulating with Culpeper in spring-when she’d be heavily pregnant! Thus endagering her own child! And that would further enrage Henry, even if by that point he still belived he was child’s father and not Catherine’s alleged lover. He would have been made to believe she killed their baby, that her sin of adultery made them lose it.
For portion of alleged affair, she’d be either pregnant or possibly recovering from birth depending on how badly it went.
You know, some of Catherine’s behaviour in months before imprisoment can be explained as her mourning her child. She might have been grief-striken and wish to be kept alone in her room, because she felt depressed. And that got used against her!
Imo Catherine Howard was framed, and not guilty of adultery. Easy target due to past sexual abuse upon her, easily swayed paranoid king, easily altered letter, witness which probably caved once before during framing of another Queen.
(I can elaborte if you wish me to, although I believe I wrote about it once before.)
I dislike those who admire and praise Catherine Howard for supposedly cheating upon Henry VIII. That’s assuming the worst of her.
