The mental image of Hirugami surprising his child with a puppy has me in a chokehold 😞
PLEASE IM HAVING A STROKE 😩 hirugami holding a little puppy in his big hands oh god i am unwell—

“what did you do this time?” you ask, eyeing hirugami warily as he presents you a pretty arrangement of flowers.
“hey, i can be spontaneously romantic,” he argues with a grin that only makes you more suspicious.
you take the flowers from him, but lean back when he tries to lean in for a kiss. “i’m serious. are you working overtime again on friday? i swear—”
a bark from just outside the front door cuts you off.
your eyes widen. “you didn’t.”
“i did,” he confirms excitedly, pushing the door open and bending down to scoop the little chocolate lab out of its kennel. “it’s a rescue.”
oh, he’s so sneaky for bringing the wiggling pup here before asking. you’d had the pet conversation, sure, as life was starting to even out a bit and your daughter was turning five soon. but you’d never agreed. not yet.
(however, seeing that little puppy in your husband’s arms was almost enough to tip you into compliance. it was just so cute.)
“she’s not ready for a puppy yet,” you try to argue, because as responsible as your little four year old was, puppies were on a different level. a six year old’s level, maybe. “and we’re not home enough to take care of it.”
“i’ll take him to work with me,” he shrugs, hefting the pup up against his shoulder, where it rests his little head and floppy ears. “and she’s ready, babe. i’ll make sure she helps with feeding, plays with him in the yard, and gives him lots and lots of love.”
your resolve is crumbling faster than a nature valley bar.
but you’re not going to let this go without one last show of authority, so you cross your arms over your chest and look him dead in the eye. “if he has an accident on my floor, you’re cleaning it up.”
his grin widens as he strokes the puppy’s smooth brown fur. “yes, dear.”
“if he rips at my furniture, i get to pick the new pieces.”
“wouldn’t have it any other way.” both the dog and your husband are giving you puppy dog eyes now, causing your heart to clench in your chest.
“when he barks to be let out at five in the morning, you’re the one getting up.”
“as if you would ever,” he snorts. “you sleep like the dead.”
“sachiro.”
“alright, alright,” he laughs, pulling you in to press a kiss to your temple. “yes, i’ll wake up to let him out. let you get your beauty sleep.”
“okay, fine.” you relent with a sigh. “now let me hold this little guy before our daughter gets home and refuses to let him go.”
he hands you the sleepy puppy, who already has a little blue bow wrapped around its collar. your heart melts into a puddle when he yawns, snuggling into your chest. “you’re lucky you’re so cute.”
“i know, thanks babe,” your husband chirps, already heaving a bag of dog food over his shoulder.
“i could not have been more clearly talking to the dog, sachiro.”
-
the look on her little face is priceless when sachiro kneels in front of her, holding the pup in his hands.
“a puppy?” she sniffles, tears welling up in her eyes when her daddy drops the new puppy into her lap. it’s wiggling around, tail wagging rapidly as it laps at her face. “he’s so cute…”
she’s sobbing now, weeping tears of joy as she presses her wet cheek to the pup’s body. “thank you, daddy, i love him so much!”
you and your husband exchange a surprised look before he pulls them both into his lap. he presses a kiss atop her head before wiping away her tears. “he’s gonna need a name, sweetheart.”
and yes, before he was housebroken, peanut butter the puppy repeatedly had accidents on your floor, chewed on your furniture, and woke the two of you up with his barking in the early hours of dawn.
but it was worth it— not only because you got the new sectional you’d been eyeing. but because those four little paws made your family complete.
