I’m so happy that Maisie and “History Of Man” are being recognized, but I really hope that the people who are just discovering it are actually listening to The Good Witch in full because part of the brilliance and beauty of that song is how it parallels and counters other songs on the album and if they’re just listening to it without that context they’re missing out on so much of what makes the song great.

there's something so interesting about how in history of man by maisie peters, she says "and sampson blamed delilah, but given half the chance i would've made him weaker too." i know that something the christian faith is pretty well-known for (obviously not every church or religious leader does this but a lot do) is teaching young girls which women not to be like from the bible - eve, delilah, anyone but mary basically - and it's always women who were seen as "rebellious" and "failed to do their duty" as women in some way. and this is just part of the larger societal setup where women are told exactly how to be and exactly what kind of woman not to be - loud, courageous, bold, independent. the subliminal messaging of that is almost inescapable. and here, she takes this woman, delilah, who is like a poster Woman To Not Be Like, and she goes "actually no, fuck that. i would've made him weaker too." she takes back the power from these institutions (which are just one part of a much larger message that society sends to girls) that have used this woman as a projection of everything not to be and she's loudly and proudly proclaimed that not only was delilah undeserving of that reputation but that she herself would've done the same and she's not going to be ashamed about it
