Spencer's insane decision to be as horny as possible in the beginning of their post-fight conversation actually makes a lot more sense when you realize he fully intended to sex his way out of getting dumped.
He thought Trina still being pissed at him was just foreplay and the reality did not hit him until Trina was deep in her "I choose me" speech. Horny Cassadine brain had completely overtaken him while sleeping on the dorm hallway floor.

Hey, super glad to see “His Father’s Son” is back up!
I just got caught up with it tonight, and I really just wanted to say how much I’ve been enjoying it! Your word choice when describing the demons and Fallen are really amazing, and they’ve inspired me to work more on my TTRPG projects. I really can’t express how much of a help you’ve been in my creative endeavors, even unintentionally.
You’re awesome! I love you! Keep it up!
And my ask: How’s your day been?
Thank you so much!
Just so ya'll know, I read a lot of things like Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, and I've recently been very much into the Locked Tomb books. So if you want an idea of what inspires me, go read anything by those guys.
Locked Tomb especially is great, and I personally think it might be the next big YA-type-thing that's going to blow up big any day now.
Also YEAH TTRPG! I need to work on my Vampire the Masquerade game I'm thinking up.
My day has been pretty decent. This ask put a big smile on my face.

why did they include arthur saying they cant share a bed together and then had merlin awkwardly deny it and laugh it off in a nervous way that clearly indicates he is lying 😩

His Father’s Son
What happened to Arthur? He became King, but instead of fulfilling his promises, he did the opposite of what he’d said he’d do; did things he wouldn’t have done while Prince. Why did the writers regress Arthur’s character? What is it about Agravaine that makes Arthur yield to him so quickly? It is that he flatters rather than belittles Arthur? Agravaine is much more skilled at making Arthur bend to his will than Uther ever was.
Uther’s absence cast a greater shadow upon Arthur than his presence had. I guess it was easier to oppose his father when he didn’t have to make all the decisions, when he could follow his heart knowing his dad would be there to lead his people. Now, Arthur must be the one to decide upon everything, so he second guesses himself more than ever.
But that doesn’t explain why Arthur used to be able to acknowledge his father’s mistakes and now can’t. I agree that Uther was a great King in some regards, but Arthur used to have his own goals and ideals of what a good King should be. He used to dream of the day he could rule Camelot in his own way. It’s like his identity has been erased. Is this just the work of Agravaine? Arthur killed King Caerleon in cold blood. He didn’t want to, but Agravaine urged him to. I don’t understand what Arthur’s initial plan was - if he wasn’t going to kill Caerleon, then what? - but Agravaine preyed on Arthur’s insecurities well. Arthur doesn’t wish to ruin his father’s legacy - never has - or to be seen as weak and make Camelot vulnerable to attacks. Agravaine chose his words wisely:
Arthur, your father was a strong king. His enemies feared and respected that strength.
Was the thought of disappointing his father in death even worse than in life?
Arthur never wanted to be a strong King if it meant being coldhearted. He knew there was strength in showing mercy and compassion, like Merlin tried telling him. Prince Arthur would have refused to kill Caerleon; he would’ve thought it dishonorable. But King Arthur is afraid of setting a bad example. His acts of rebellion are no longer mere acts of rebellion; they decide the fate of Camelot. So I can understand his reasoning up to a point. He’s often stubborn and slow to see reason, and he’s always been afraid of making the wrong call. But this is not the Arthur we knew. This is someone else, and that is never more obvious than when he breaks up with Gwen.
Arthur waited years for Gwen. Agravaine talked him into leaving her in less than a minute. He told Arthur that a King must not do as he sees fit, but rather what is expected of him. He reminded Arthur that Uther believed this too.
While Arthur himself believed in doing what was expected of him, “matters of the heart” were an exception. Arthur was very firm on this. He turned down Elena at the altar, humiliating his father and risking his wrath, to be able to marry for love, and he only proposed to Elena with Gwen’s consent. Yet Agravaine was able to make Arthur break his promise to Gwen? He’d promised Gwen things would be different when he became King. What is Arthur if not true to his word?
My only explanation for his actions is that promises are easier to make than to keep. People often pull out of doing things they’ve always wanted out of fear. But this was the same Arthur who knighted commoners and kissed Gwen in front of everyone. He had grown. He was no longer the man who let himself be talked into marrying Elena. He was the man who would’ve run away with Gwen.
The writers wanted Arthur to behave out of character. He broke up with Gwen as quickly as he got back together with her, and Queen Annis also forgave Arthur rather quickly considering Caerleon wanted Camelot for himself. The writers didn’t wish to deal with the fallout of Arthur’s decisions. They only wanted Arthur to prove himself, and also to show how strong Agravaine’s hold on Arthur was.
Once again, the writers sacrificed Arthur, Gwen, and Arwen’s characterization to prove a point. Even he didn’t believe his own bullshit.
A: My only duty is to the people of this land. I'll be judged by my actions. Who I'm seen with. G: You're ashamed to be seen with me? A: No. No. But now that I'm king, it's not appropriate. G: I'm not appropriate? A: It seems not.
I’m grateful the writers at least didn’t forget the kind of person Arthur was.
I felt really bad for Gwen. She didn’t even cry. She just reminded Arthur of who he was and forgave him when he came to his senses. She deserved to be angrier, tbh. But I guess she remembered that Arthur had always refused to let go of her. He was only overwhelmed, and love is putting the other person first.
In the end, it was Gwen who saved the day. She was able to break the hold Agravaine had on Arthur, as she did with Uther before him.
By the time Arthur and his men were ready to face Annis, Arthur had already seen the error of his ways. It’s very true to character that Arthur always sees reason where his men are concerned. He would never callously sacrifice their lives. He admitted his wrongdoings to Merlin, but Merlin, as always, was too understanding. Instead of denying Arthur’s mistakes, he should’ve reminded him that his first mistake was listening to Agravaine.
M: No one could care more for their men that you do. To send them into battle is not a decision that you would make lightly, and they know that. A: But was it the right decision? M: If there was any other way out of this situation, you would take it. But you must defend Camelot. You have no choice. A: I had a choice...to let Caerleon live or die. I made the wrong decision. And now I've brought this war upon Camelot myself. M: Arthur...no one is prepared to sacrifice more for the sake of this kingdom than you. Your decision was made in the best interests of Camelot. A: Maybe. Now my men must pay for it with their lives.
Arthur already knew he was wrong. To make amends he went to Queen Annis and proposed a risky deal, which brings me to my initial point. Guinevere.
Agravaine told Arthur what a good King should be like:
You didn't want to kill Caerleon, I know that. But you were strong. You didn't let those emotions cloud your judgement. You rule with your head like a strong king must.
Which opposed Gwen’s (and Arthur’s) beliefs:
Don't let anyone tell you what to do. You said you are your own man. You have a good heart. Be true to it. Only then will you be the king you want to be.
It’s clear who won this battle of wills.
Gwen told Arthur to be true to his heart. By doing something his father never would’ve done -  gambling his life and half of Camelot to save his men - Arthur became the kind of King he wished to be - a King who puts his people ahead of his pride and owns up to his mistakes. As he told Merlin:
I don't know what will happen. But for the first time since I became king, I know in my heart I've made the right decision.
Some credit here should also be given to Queen Annis, who is one hell of a lady. She’s like Arthur, fair and compassionate, whereas Morgana’s like Uther. Her scenes with Morgana were some of my favorite evil Morgana scenes. Even if I can’t understand why she made peace with Arthur when Caerleon had been seeking to take Camelot for himself - I guess she didn’t want the same - I liked her a lot. The actress did a great job with the character. I liked her and Arthur's friendship. They were well matched.
The writers did a pretty good job with Morgana this episode. They revealed the human inside of her. She really did become Uther: bitter, angry, hateful, and driven mad because of magic. She told Annis what Uther often told Arthur: that they were weak for choosing peace.
If only I understood how Morgana became Uther.
I would also like to quickly point out the irony of Arthur thinking he was ruling “alone”. He was listening to Agravaine and practically letting his uncle run the Kingdom for him, but he really thought he was ruling alone? Friendless, perhaps, but definitely not alone.
To wrap things up, Merlin didn’t get to do very much in this episode. He saved Arthur from Morgana’s magic, but every decision Arthur made was free of Merlin’s influence, which I appreciated. I understand what the writers wished to accomplish with the episode. It wasn’t out of character for Arthur to obey his father’s wishes when he knew it was wrong. In The Witchfinder, for example, Arthur would’ve let Gaius burn at the stake if Gwen hadn’t intervened. But that was season 2. This is season 4. Arthur no longer needed to be told to do the right thing, especially if it concerned his character and honor.
However, I think the key difference between Agravaine and Uther is that Aggravaine was kind. Uther was inflexible and cold, and it made Arthur oppose him all the more at times. But Agravaine pretended to be Arthur’s friend, to have his best interests at heart. Uther couldn’t understand why Arthur would marry a servant and wished for Arthur’s marriage to strengthen the kingdom. Agravaine, however, had no issue with Gwen being a servant - she was “beautiful” and possessed “many fine qualities”. It was the people of Camelot who took issue with Gwen being a servant.
You must do what is expected of you. You must present yourself in an appropriate manner. The people...your people do not wish to see their king with the daughter of a blacksmith.
So, it was less about appearances and more about serving his people. He had to set aside his personal feelings for the good of his kingdom.
It’s a subtle difference, but Arthur cares for his people more than anything, more than power. His father was prejudiced and cold so Arthur dismissed his words easily, but Agravaine was much more reasonable, and thus harder to ignore.
In the end, though, Arthur put Gwen and his men first, like he always does. I guess I can forgive and understand his characterization. The main issue was lack of time. Arthur made two uncharacteristic decisions in a very short amount of time, and both situations got resolved rather quickly too. But I very much enjoyed the episode after the first ten minutes or so. I felt proud of Arthur so I understand what the writers did.
However, their go-to routine of regressing Arthur’s character, usually by feeding him bad advice from a trusted source, in order to test Arthur and show what’s in his heart, made it so Arthur never truly progressed past his season 3 arc. The only thing the writers succeeded in doing was proving Annis right:
There is something about you, Arthur Pendragon. Something which gives me hope for us all.
I don’t doubt that Arthur is The Once and Future King, but we didn’t see him become him.
Bonus Arwen: Arthur giving Merlin his ring alongside an apology for Gwen. Also, it’s cute that he was waiting up for Gwen and had picked flowers for her. But Gwen shouldn’t have hidden her pain and worries from Arthur. She forgave him because she understood him, but she was wrong about not needing an apology. She did deserve one, and Arthur should’ve done a better job apologizing. It’s like he knew she would take him back so he didn’t even try. He just acted like he hadn’t broken up with her at all, like it was his choice alone to get back together. As cute as playful Arwen were, and as gorgeous as their kiss was, Arthur’s attitude bothered me.

There's something to say about the symbolism of Gwen and Arthur wearing the same colors/cloaks from the day they began their relationship to when they temporarily broke up. Not only do the colors pay a homage to their individual characterizations Arthur's light blue could represent hope, new love, nobility and Gwen's purple could represent humility, romance and strength), the wedding phrase 'something borrowed, something blue' immediately comes to mind. The full phrase being 'Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue' all of which are represented in the two episodes, perhaps foreshadowing the eventual marriage?
Recently noticed this parallel between Gwen and Arthur's first kiss and their first break-up, and I was kind of floored by the implications.
First, the episode titles:
"Once and Future Queen" is the episode where Gwen and Arthur form the very foundation of their relationship and get to see each other as love interests, even before sharing a very adorable first kiss.
The title "His Father's Son" is more of a reference to the past rather than the future, a throwback, and a clear comparison between the similarities and differences of Arthur's ruling and Uther's.
The title "His Father's Son" is more of a reference to the past rather than the future, a throwback, and a clear comparison between the similarities and differences of Arthur's ruling and Uther's.
It's all the more a juxtapostion, on the titles alone, of Arthur making a positive decision in favor of his future in "Once and Future Queen" and going back steps in "His Father's Son."
Now why is that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the door of Gwen's home, and at the 'door' of their relationship is where it all begins and ends. Very fitting that Arthur leaves almost immediately after he changes their relationship in some way!
On the surface level, you can clearly see the parallels:
Arthur in his ‘disguised’ blue cloak and Gwen in her customary, and favorite purple.
In ‘Once and Future Queen’, Gwen intiates some awkward conversation before gifting Arthur with her favor, showing him that he is the ‘better man’, a worthy man of respect and he should give himself more credit for the way his character has grown.
Moved, Arthur leans in for a searing kiss, and then makes his way out with a heart-felt backward glance, both of them surprised by the sudden outpouring of feelings.
In ‘His Father’s Son’, Gwen makes conversation with him warmly, until Arthur stumbles out his words, ‘we’re over, let’s breakup.’ What follows is Gwen’s insistent plea that, no matter what, he should remember their first meeting and ‘be his own man’; if not for her, but for the kingdom.
He insists that he still is, but they both know the truth. And he makes his exit soon after, but not before giving Gwen one last broken-hearted look at the door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to read too closely into it, but I like how their positions/distance changed depending on what happened in each scene.
Both episodes had a few common themes: maturity/growing up, self-esteem vs sense of self and living up to expectations.
In both episodes, Arthur has a ‘relapse’ to his supercilious, pride-full ways with a corresponding step back in his relationship with Gwen, and then a spurt of character development later on that brings him forward.
Both episodes involved themes of underlying strength, humility and self-worth that were meaningful to Gwen.
Tumblr media
Gwen giving Arthur her favor, and them clasping hands as a continued visual for viewers to understand the solidarity of their union, and then rulership.
I think these episodes are all the more important because they feature Arwen, and not the other way around.
Arwen is not a relationship confined within itself, instead, the love blossoming between them has long-standing effects on the health of the kingdom, and whether many traditions and policies begin or end.
In my previous post I talked about how, for Arthur, Kingship and being a good man for Gwen are near interchangeable, and a second arc of his character development is really learning the difference between the two, while balancing both.
This really comes to a climax in ‘Lancelot du Lac’ where Arthur makes a very harsh decision in banishing Gwen, something more akin to a King and his subject rather than a scorned fiancé.
Truthfully, Gwen sometimes overlaps the two as well, Arthur’s future ruling and their relationship, which led to her slightly pessimistic view that their relationship would always come second to the Kingdom, from s2-s3.
However, by the finale of season 4, the two of them have matured in the light of their own mistakes, enchantments and other forces trying to break them apart, as well as a shared goal for the future.
Gwen had always advocated for Arthur’s future as ‘his own man’ for the kingdom, reminding him to love the Kingdom with the same repeat and adoration he gave her; and Arthur had learned the difference.
In turn, he made steps to positively affirm the strength of their relationship, despite breaking up twice, and that, even besides the Kingdom, Gwen would always come first in his heart. Something Gwen came to accept and later grieve when she came to inherit the Queendom alone.
The inherent symbolism of the start and breaking up of their relationship happening at Gwen’s home and at Gwen’s door, is very beautiful.
Not only does it refer to Arthur’s new-found humility while being with Gwen, and/or the reference to his people, it really points to the eventual hearth of Camelot where Arthur makes his ‘home’: Gwen.
She is the fire that keeps burning long after image of King Arthur is gone, she truly represents the legend and myth of all that will come to pass, the true golden age of Albion under her rule, with Arthur leaving the kingdom in her capable hands.
He once said that he would give up his entitlement to the throne, everything that a Crown Prince of Camelot stood for, the wealth, the nobility and lineage of the Pendragons. And that he would do it again.
This is very true, and an unfortunately tragic in foresight, because eventually, he does leave his Kingship at Gwen’s door, entrusting her to safeguard and prosper it in his absence.
And so she does! With a maturity and presence that had been foreshadowed in their romance all along, something Arthur had fallen in love with first, before the rest of Camelot fell too.
Tumblr media
A last backwards glance of love, before Arthur sets off on his journey to Albion, and Gwen builds 'heaven on earth' in his absence.

HI IVE NEVER TALKED TO YOU BEFORE AND IM SO SORRY BUT I REALLY HAVE TO KNOW
What happened yo “His Father’s Son”? It’s not on your page on Ao3 anymore, and I was in the middle of reading it :(
I hope everything’s alright!
HI THATS OKAY I LIKE TALKING TO PEOPLE.
So I did a thing with my fic where I would try to promote people asking for commissions in my authors notes. I thought it was a nice way to shout out artists I liked and wanted to get more eyes on.
Turned out, Ao3 didn't like that and hid the fic. Which I get, they're a non-profit.
Right now I'm working to get it unhidden, and I went through and basically wiped any references to links or commissions or whatever.
So hopefully the fic will be back soon!
Also in terms of chapters I'm writing new ones, my goal is to get this next chapter done then when the fic comes back, a big ol' update is a-coming.
