I saw someone (I’ve forgotten who!) post a couple months ago, asking if it’s ever established in canon whether Mairon ever found out it was Finrod in Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Short answer, after perusing the relevant text: no.
My personal interpretation, for my own amusement: I think he’d figure out Beren, since his run-in with Luthien and Huan happened shortly afterwards, but had a complete Kronk moment with Finrod, years down the line. Like, you know when you’re an expert in a subject and some things totally fly under your radar, because it doesn’t occur to you that anyone would do anything that dumb? I think that, being a master of deception, he wouldn’t realize what Nereb and Dungalef stood for, not for literal ages, because who uses their real names just backwards/anagrammed when infiltrating an enemy stronghold (and arguably the most dangerous stronghold, second only to Angband), that’s just so stupid so stupid it actually worked XD
(In his defense, there was a lot going on in the First Age. A Lot.)
But.
I like to think it plagued him for years :)

Like, accidentally kidnapping someone who turns out to be the long-lost Avatar? Are you fucking serious?”

Taituk turned to her, brows furrowing. “What?”
I have discovered a new drug and it’s called “making my ocs aware of the narrative”
#elli rambles#I think taituk is aware of it the most but helpless to stop it#the only thing they can do is try to support hira the best they can#hira is aware of it to some degree I think but tries to fight it through denial#unwilling narrator and such#it does. not work btw. obviously#oc rambles#oc tag#the birates#wind in the sails#taituk#hira#ok no scratch that first part yes taituk is aware of the narrative but SITA is the most aware#but she pretends not to be#while taituk’s fourth wall breaks are mostly for comedy sita’s awareness only serves to make her character even more tragic#which makes it even more impressive that she doesn’t grow to resent hira (and speaks volumes about her character)#image a drawing here of sita looking cheerful as always but haunted with an arrow & the text ‘aware of the narrative’#ok time to unleash this from the drafts. go. you’re free now
