Hils Watches The King's Avatar - Ep 1
When I'm watching dramas I try to rotate countries to keep things diverse and interesting. I'm due to watch another cdrama and I've been dithering for ages about which one I wanted to watch.
Finally settled on The King's Avatar. It's been on my to watch list pretty much since I first started watching cdramas back in 2020 so I'm about due.
I don't know a huge amount about it other than loads of my friends have recced it, it's about an esports team (I think?) and Yang Yang is in it. So, let's dive in and see what's up.
Oh, I wonder who the bad guys are
Oh no Team Excellent Era (these team names are not subtle) has a lone wolf in their midst who does not follow orders and may have just cost them the game
Love the slow motion mask removal with dramatic music. All that was missing was a hair toss. Does he wear a mask because he's Too Hot
I think this is actually only the second thing I've seen Yang Yang in apart from The Lost Tomb. He def looks better without the emo hair
Ooh he kicked the lone wolf off the team. So I reckon either they're going to end up needing him and Yang Yang will have to woo him back, or the lone wolf is going to defect to the evil team
Oh no is this going to be about the evils of capitalism and how the terrible bosses only care about making money not the love of playing the game
GASP! Yang Yang has been REPLACED! I'm not even joking I did legit gasp. This isn't what I was expecting at all.
And he's walking. Ooh is he going to set up a rival team of his own? I've seen Gank Your Heart :D
I'm really distracted by the fact that this team's logo looks like the Canadian flag
I don't know why but I always thought Yang Yang was tall. He's apparently 5'9
Oh no he's sad and Yearning
And now he's standing all alone in the snow. This is very dramatic
See, this is what I thought was going to happen. I thought his teammates would leave with him and they'd form a new team. But he's apparently not allowed to play for a year because he terminated his contract and he wants her to stay for all the work they put into the team together. This is quite angsty for an opening episode!
Oh he's starting over from scratch in the game, playing in an internet cafe. I kind of love this.
Ahhh the owner of the internet cafe loves the game as much as he does. I bet she ends up on his team.
Oh no I'm getting found family feels
Of course he wants to work in the internet cafe full of people who love the game as much as he does
Well, that was surprising in a lot of ways but kind of delightful. I'll probably watch another one after dinner

I don't even know that dude's name. He's just 'that fucking guy'. Anyway he deserves to be punched again.
I can't remember the last time I wanted to hug a fictional character this badly
YAY he showed up!
Whenever there's a game section I get super invested in what's happening and forget to liveblog but yay after some hesitation An Wenyi has learned that being part of a team is nice

Hils Watches The King's Avatar - Ep 40
It doesn't feel like 5 minutes ago that I started this drama. It's so very bingeable.
It's been a real journey. None of this has been what I expected beyond the very basic concept of 'it's a drama about esports'. There have been so many wonderful surprises. There are characters that I hated that I now love, characters that I loved that I now love even more, and more ships than I ever expected to ship.
While I'm at it I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has popped up in the replies to my posts or in my asks to either answer my questions or just yell about their favourite characters. I can tell this drama (and the novel and donghua) are so well loved and liveblogging this has really felt like a community experience. Thank you for not laughing at all the stuff I got wrong and for not making fun of me for shipping everyone. It's really been so wonderful and I almost don't want to press play on the final episode because I don't want it to be over.
But I need to see what happens so let's go!
Ah, okay. I misunderstood what happened at the end of the last episode. I thought they'd lost the game but no they could still win they just didn't have enough points to win the championship.
Is there going to be some loophole like the whole 'oh the ref's watch broke so actually you won'
HAHA! I fucking knew it! They got an extra two points for beating a league record. Because apparently that is a rule that has never been mentioned until now.
Eh, whatever. There was a nice moment with the fans before the found out they'd won
Ye Xiu finally gets the hug that he's needed since episode 1
Good lord how is there 30 minutes left? What's going to happen now that they've won?
God I hope Sun Xiang punches him
Except of course he won't because he's all grown up now. Also, typically it's the coaches/managers that get fired when a team does badly. I hope he gets booted

Remember when their entire fanbase was just this guy. I'm definitely not crying at all
Look at that little half smile. He's grown so much considering they only lost on a technicality. I do think he's at least a little bit happy for Ye Xiu as the better player (for now)

LOL remember when I thought he was going to be the antagonist of the drama when I watched the first episode. How wrong I was

I have in no way been thinking about writing some King's Avatar fic with one based on the fact that Ye Xiu passes out after one drink

And finished! That was wonderful! Definitely in my top 5 dramas that I've watched this year. Might even be the number one, actually. I definitely should have watched that years ago when people first told me to give it a try. But, you know, I firmly believe you find things when you were meant to find them. Now was good.

Hils Watches The King's Avatar - Ep 38
This is probably going to be the last one I watch today and then I'll finish it tomorrow. Unless this one ends on a cliffhanger...
I don't know if he's lying but he seems genuinely delighted that Yifan has done something in the game and no one knows how he did it
I really thought Yifan had won that one and I legit gasped when Xiao Shiqin managed to take him out as he was dying. The game sequences in this drama are so good!
If they didn't both already have boyfriends I would ship them. Yifan deserves all the boyfriends who love and respect him.
His former captain is proud of him. I'm fine I'm not crying at all.
And his other boyfriend is proud of him too
All I've wanted is for someone to hug Yifan and amazingly it's An Wenyi who has stepped up
HEY! Why don't the girls get to be in the team huddle? This is bullshit.
I was so sure it was going to be Sun Xiang but I suppose Ye Xiu has to defeat his son before he can defeat his son's new dad

I don't like it but pro sports players do shit like this all the time. At the end of any season you find out players were playing with broken bones and all sorts of awful stuff. One guy a few years back was getting hooked up to an IV every night while his team was in the final so he could play through a really bad fever.
Oh so he's letting her play now. Honestly, fuck this guy for fucking everyone around. The sooner she gets out of this toxic environment the better
I love that Xiao Shiqin hates him too

Uh...you can't just change the league rules right before the final. That's something you do between seasons. Yes, I know I need to stop acting like this is real sports
I love that they all immediately turn to their maths expert to tell them how this will impact their game. Luo Ji really is the unsung hero of this drama
I really love their dynamic. I wish we had time for more of this
They're like a little dysfunctional family. Like most of the teams in this drama
That's none of your fucking business, my dude
I knew he was going to bench her. What a dick. Well, that's your loss. She's one of your best players.
So he's told her she's not allowed to play in the final but he's happy for her to lead strategy meetings. Make it make sense.
Personal growth
It's funny because the game is called Glory. Also, wasn't Yang Yang in a drama called You Are My Glory?
I love this. First Chang Xian gave a Ye Xiu fan sign to Ye Xiu's dad and now he's given some of those inflatable noodle things (seriously what are those) to Ye Xiu's on/off boyfriend. Ooh but if Wenqing is there does that mean the other captains are there too? GIVE ME SOME BLUE RAIN HUSBANDS

Wait, I'm confused. I thought the game Team Happy lost mean they didn't qualify for the final. If they did why was everyone acting like the game was so important to the point where they broke up because they lost. What happened to the team that beat them? Is it just a points system so Happy qualified because they won all their other games? I do not understand how this league works at all
Okay, I know this is fiction and I should not be applying logic but surely if your team has disbanded you have to inform the league. You can't just let people find out for themselves when you just don't show up to a league final press conference

I see Sun Xiang smiling at Ye Xiu's beautiful speech about how esports bring people together from all walks of life

I'm trying not to think about how few episodes I have left
Wait, I thought that WAS the official verdict. I'm assuming that because this dude has been sitting here gloating for like an hour that it's going to be overturned somehow.
I love that this is a gathering all all the team captains plus Wenzhou's husband
Still unclear what he did to warrant a lifetime ban.
Okay now I want Shaotian to lead a revolution where no one will play because there's no point if their most worthy competitor has been banned.
Yes! Lead them into a strike! Also, this is my 700th screenshot of this drama. Nothing else I have liveblogged (or livetweeted as I used to do) has come anywhere near this amount and I've watched stuff WAY longer than this. Well, maybe my Lost Tomb Reboot rewatch but nothing else!
Wenqing is like 'I'm not sure 'friends' is the word I'd use for what we are'

See, this is why I love them. Shaotian is loud and passionate, Wenzhou is quiet and rational. They balance each other perfectly and they love each other so much
I love that during his whole speech Wenzhou has his hand on Shaotian's shoulder. Probably to stop Shaotian from launching himself across the table and fighting the chairman of the league
It's a good thing Shiqin is there as the Excellent Era vice captain because Sun Xiang would never admit this even if he knows it's true
Not me crying because, for the first time, Shaotian decided to be tactful and stay quiet but his husband is there to encourage him to speak
So this dude said 'I can only overturn the ban if you give me a good reason', the captains gave him several good reasons, and the response was just 'cool but you have to respect the decision to ban him'. Well, that was a waste of 5 minutes (apart from letting me see the Blue Rain husbands who I have missed)
Okay, next we need the fans to protest I guess? If the pros and the fans all protest you don't have a league anymore
It seems weird to me that the captains of the other teams know Ye Xiu has been banned but his own team doesn't. Anyway, they've made him a sub which I hope means he's going to get unbanned in time to show up and help them win
That is not a good tactic. What if he doesn't show up? Also, you told Mo Fan to stall for time and he got a yellow card
Oh I hope she ends up having to fight three of them by herself and wipes them all out like she said she was going to do. Fighting!
Nope she got killed again. So much for getting to redeem herself.
Okay, I'm glad they rescinded the ban. But how do you even enforce this? Didn't he win them the championship a bunch of times? Are they going to take that back and give it to another team?
Sucks to be this guy though. And hi Blue Rain husbands in the background. I can't believe they've decided all of this in less time than it takes for Team Happy to finish a tournament. If this was real life there would be months, maybe even years of meeting with lawyers and league board members etc
I choose to believe Shaotian and Wenzhou are holding hands just out of frame
They could at least have given him a ride back to the game that they pulled him out of instead of making him try and find a taxi
He has friends who were in that meeting even if the league weren't prepared to drive him back to the game. Does no one in this universe own a car?
YAY! I have no idea how he got there so fast given he was hailing a cab like a minute ago but let's just go with it
I love her! Plays for another team but just walks on stage and sits with Team Happy in front of everyone after dropping off Ye Xiu

My son won his first one on one game! I am so proud of him!
LOL Baozi's game was over in like 2 minutes. This is all going too well considering Ye Xiu isn't there. I am worried about Tang Rou

I think they need to stop listening to Wei Chen's advice. I am tickled that esports apparently has a yellow card/red card system like football (soccer for the Amercians) does
Okay, this is bullshit. They pulled Ye Xiu right before a game. They know time is critical. But they've just left him waiting in a room. Like if you think his ID is fake you pull him, verify it, and send him back. Surely it doesn't take this long?
Why the fuck have they sent this guy to tell him? He has nothing to do with Ye Xiu or his team.
Oh what the fuck! Right, I'm confused about what caused this. Is it because he was using his brother's ID when he was playing for Excellent Era?
Uh...what relationship? Also I'm pretty sure you're the one who got him banned and I don't see how it gets worse than that
So Ye Xiu is banned and if Tang Rou loses she's going to retire. EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE

I am really glad Tumblr upped it's image limit per post from 10 to 30. Otherwise each episode would take about 3 posts for me to liveblog
ANYWAY
I still hate his dad but I am very much enjoying this One Excited Fan telling him how much his son means to people
Yes please do keep roasting Wei Chen for being old
I love him, but every time I look at him and I can't help but think of how @lynne-monstr described him as 'deadbeat gamer dad who went out to buy coke and never came back'. It's so perfect!
And his dad left as soon as they won. And now Ye Xiu is making the sad puppy face again. STOP MAKING HIM SAD.
If you wanted to tell your son that he's now welcome at home you could have actually talked to him instead of giving a house key to some random fan you met at the game. YOU MADE YE XIU SAD AGAIN.

Hils Watches The King's Avatar - Ep 29
Due to unforseen circumstances my babysitting has been cancelled tonight so I'm going to watch a couple more episodes. I should be finished some time next week and I'm not ready for it to be over even though I have loads of other dramas on my to watch list
Okay, I said this in the replies of the previous episode's post but I'm going to say it here too. Apparently this storyline isn't in the book. Why is it here? Was this added just to provide some extra drama? Ye Xiu's best friend died they really don't need to add parental angst as well.
I am really not a fan of the message that you should forgive your family just because they're your family. Ye Xiu has a family that loves him, they're just not his biological family. He doesn't need the approval of his abusive dad. His dad hasn't apologised for kicking him out when he was still a teenager and clearly isn't going to now.
You didn't need to make him this sad just because everyone else on the team has a sad backstory. His dead best friend IS his sad backstory.

I swear if his dad shows up to watch him play and that's considered enough I will throw my laptop out the window

I didn't think Mo Fan was going to join the team just like that. But did Ye Xiu just give him a tour and then go to bed in the middle of the day? (Yes I know this is probably a test). Also, Ye Xiu, you wouldn't have to sleep with your arm over your eyes like that if you closed the curtains in your room
