— THE PACIFIC PREFERENCE
WHEN THEY FIND OUT YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON THEM
Characters: Eugene Sledge, Snafu Shelton, Bob Leckie, Sidney Phillips, Hoosier Smith, Hillbilly Jones + Captain “Ack-Ack” Haldane
Tags: —
A/N: *sighs* men. let me know if you guys want a part 2 with other characters from the pacific (e.g. john basilone, burgin, jay de l’eau, bill leyden, runner, chuckler etc)!!! pls enjoy and leave a like/reblog/feedback <33 ^.^ // [ko-fi] [commissions] / this was inspired by my love @littlemissvincentvega from this post <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EUGENE SLEDGE “SLEDGEHAMMER” —
He’s flustered, but he doesn’t do anything about it. Eugene’s frail and bookish, so he’s too shy to pursue you.
Whenever you walk past him, he has to get a good look of you, maybe just a crumb of your face, before keeping his head down.
Sid would tease him and never let it go.
“Give me a break, you ol’ greaser—”
“Hey, I’m just sayin’. The missus needs a friend!”
and Snafu would just make remarks about you, much to Eugene’s annoyance and a sense of motivation to make a move before someone else does.
Eugene is confident that he would get to ask you out some day, because he was raised to be kind and a gentleman. Time will tell.
Tumblr media
MERRIELL “SNAFU” SHELTON —
Learning about your crush on him boosts his ego and is way too cocky about it.
“What did I tell ya? Getting to the likes of Y/N is like discovering a goldmine. I’m gonna reel them in.”
Snafu obviously bothers you during the day by flirting with you, trying to get your attention because he likes getting attention.
He doesn’t leave pleasant remarks at first, but he goes straight down to business.
“So, doll. Dinner? Movie? Picnic under the stars? How ‘bout I take you to the back of the train and you can show me your caboose? ;)”
Snafu will eventually learn to be more respectful. But at least he’s polite when he tries to talk and hang out with you more.
Tumblr media
ROBERT “BOB” LECKIE —
This man is charming. He managed to win over Stella’s family over dinner, so he could do the same with you.
He won’t stop thinking about you. But he’ll get a bit insecure and overthink about other irrelevant things.
“I wonder what you don’t like about me?”
His friends from How Company make fun of him, reading out loud the letters you wrote to him.
He shows up to your house unexpectedly, all fresh and clean, in uniform, and he asks you out for dinner.
Deep down, he’s nervous af - he’s overthinking if it doesn’t work out if you two ever start dating.
When he takes you out you can tell he’s a nervous wreck and he doesn’t know where else to go from there, but you assure him he’s doing fine.
Tumblr media
SIDNEY “SID” PHILLIPS —
Sid is already getting along with you, so nothing really changes when he finds out you have a crush on him. If anything, it brings the two of you closer.
He likes to talk to you about anything, and he’ll eventually bring up taking you out for dinner or a picnic under the stars.
Sid will tell you all about Eugene, life in Mobile, baseball, the rotting coconuts in Pavuvu, anything to keep you around.
“Here, y/n. How about I drop you home? I can squeeze you in on my bike!”
He’s surprised that he’s not as nervous when you two become more than friends.
Sid realizes he’s falling for you hard and it’s gonna kill him once he’s sent off to fight again.
Tumblr media
BILL “HOOSIER” SMITH —
This cocky little shit
When Hoosier confronts you about it, he has a big smirk on his face.
“A lil’ bird told me you got your eyes on me.” (The lil’ bird in question was Chuckler.......)
He wastes NO time asking you out. And of course, you accept.
If you smoke, he offers you a cigarette from his pack.
Hoosier is a goofball and he never fails to make you laugh when you two are bonding together.
He’ll stuff cigarettes up his nostrils and once he finally takes you out, let’s say at a fancy restaurant, he’ll stuff the chopsticks up his nostrils. Anything to hear that laugh of yours.
Tumblr media
1ST LT. EDDIE “HILLBILLY” JONES —
He’s flattered, all right.
Even from the dungarees and dirt, he’s known for having a clean, fresh and handsome appearance, according to Sledge’s book.
Hillbilly’s a gentleman. If he were to take you out sometime, he’d make you feel like there’s no other person in his life but you.
Ack-Ack pushes him to make a move. He assures him that it wouldn’t hurt to leave some room for a little bit of bonding.
“I know I’m serious when I need to be serious, but I’m a helpless disciple saved by Christ when I found out about you.”
So of course, he’s gonna come in with his guitar and play you a song to win you over.
Tumblr media
CAPTAIN ANDREW “ACK-ACK” HALDANE —
Of course, of all people, you develop feelings for the skipper.
Since he’s a good leader who pulls everyone together during the war, you could understand why you like him. He’s also a very sweet guy.
The thing is, he already knows. You’re too shy to even confess your feelings to him in person or in letters, anonymously or not. In fact, no one even told the skipper about it and nobody needed to. He just knows. A good captain is always observant.
You two are alone for a moment, and his casual, calm and friendly tone manages to help you feel more comfortable and less nervous.
He gives you one of the blankets his dad made for everyone. He wraps it around you at night when you’re feeling cold or afraid.

hi sweetie!! ahhhhh i'm so happy that you've opened up ships :) could i get one for BoB and The Pacific please?
I'm 5'5, skinny, very pale, freckly with reddish brown hair and big brown eyes. Gryffindor, ENTP 3w4. I'm getting my masters degree in engineering and I love space facts, stargazing, and science in general. I fly planes, do archery, and write songs. I also like to read about WWII history, travel, and I also help out at the Camp Toccoa site on the weekends because my uncle runs it. I'm kind of an animal whisperer of sorts lol and I have a dog that I love more than life :) I tend to be bubbly, playful, ambitious, funny and a go-getter. On a bad day I can be overthinking and self-conscious.
Thanks!! I'm really excited about these!!
OOoooh honey this one's a bit tricky, but I will do my best.....now let's see, you would probably best be shipped with.......
Tumblr media
Eddie Jones from The Pacific!!!!
You and Eddie love nature
Literally anything in nature
Especially all the weird plants and animals
Eddie loves to take you to some pretty wild parts, both at home and all over the world
You guys have been to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida multiple times
And even got to go to Space Camp
You've seen the shuttles launch
But the place you always remember was a wildlife sanctuary in Brazil
You guys got to interact with a colony of Spix Macaws, which by the way are a seriously endangered species but are slowly rebuilding their population
You named three of them Rio, Blu and Jewel after the birds from the movie
Eddie swore up and down that you were Eliza Thornberry by the way that the birds came to you
The pictures you guys took at the rainforest were LEGENDARY!!!
When you guys got back to the states, you extensively explored the state of Georgia
You both hiked up Curahee, three miles up and three miles down without getting tired
You guys also explored the Chattahoochee Trail
And when you got to the waterfall, you weren't expecting to receive what Eddie gave you
It was a ring with a turquoise stone
And he asked you to marry him
Because he doesn't want to miss a moment with you
I hope this came out ok hon, this is my first time doing ships for the fandom. If you want one for BOB I'll be happy to do a separate one for that 🥰🥰🥰🥰🤗🤗🤗🤗

Eddie ‘Hillbilly’ Headcannons
Tags: @sunflowerchuck @aselovestofly
Thank you for the request @ourmiraclealigner I hope you enjoy ☺️
Tumblr media
- You were a famous journalist who was sent to the front lines to document the horrors of war. You went through boot camp, before you left for the pacific.
- Honestly men were not really enthusiastic for you being there. But you had a duty to take care of the history that was taking place around you. Reporting to people back home about these terrors. And the hero’s that were risking their own lives for their freedom.
- When you met Eddie or ‘Hillbilly’ he was standing next to Andy talking to Eugene and Sid. As you walked by your eyes met his. They lingered probably a second longer than they should have. But you could feel your heart flutter in your chest.
- Both of you would steal glances at each other through the war. Not daring too speak to each other.
- You shared a fox hole with Burgin who was one of your best friends. You would listen to his stories as you wrote. What you didn’t know was Eddie was keeping an eye out for you. The way you crinkled your forehead in concentration. The glimmer in your eye when you had a new idea.
- But he was going to stay professional. He was a Lt and would follow the rules to a T.
- Burgin was the one that would wake you up from your nightmares. And comfort you, but as much as you appreciated his efforts. You couldn’t help but think about Eddie.
- The day he was shot your heart broke. The look of pain in his eyes, made you feel cold. You grabbed his hand in comfort, before they escorted him away from the front. You sent him a small smile which caused him to just tighten his grip. He was whisked away before you could say anything.
- Burgin stayed by your side and that night you admitted your feelings for the curly haired Lt. he smiled at you and just reassured you he would be okay.
- When the war finally ended and you were sent home. Your family saved all your letters and writings for you. As you picked through them you noticed a letter that made butterflies erupt in your chest. It was from Eddie.
- You both wrote to each other for awhile, before finally seeing each other. Both of you ended up admitting your feelings for each other.
- Who knew that you would end up finding the love of your life through your writing.

You were woken up by someone shaking your shoulder. Crossing your arms under the pillow, you buried your face a little deeper into the flat pillow they gave you. Why you thought it would make Eddie leave still doesn't have an answer. You growled loudly as you heard a little laugh and it was all it took for you to know who was trying to wake you up. Your favorite marine. Edward "Hillbilly" Jones. If possible, your determination not to get up increased almost as much as your heart's beats' speed.
"C'mon, sleepy head, it's time to get up. I want to show ya somethin'.”
“Five more minutes.” you growled into the pillow. The pressure on your shoulder went greater and you could perfectly imagine your best friend raising an eyebrow.
“You're not in the army to sleep in, Y/N.” A frown made its way on your face as you refused to open your eyes to face him.
“I have a permission, today.” You heard him sigh before your blanket was brutally taken away from you.
“Hey! What's wrong with you, Eddie?!”
“You will have wanted it, Y/N.” he said before he began to tickle you.
“No! Stop, please, Eddie, stop!” You squirmed at his hands, a joyful laugh escaping from your lips not failing to make the heart of the man of the hills' country stop.
“Are you getting up?” A smile was stuck to his face as you catch your breath.
“Yes, yes I'm coming." You muttered, panting.
“Good. I'll wait for you outside." It wasn't until Eddie turned around that you noticed it; he had his guitar on his back.
~
You were walking the streets of Melbourne in silence, simply enjoying each other's company. As you looked for gifts for Eddie's siblings, you couldn't help but find that your friend was acting strangely. As if he were nervous. He fiddled with the shoulder strap of his guitar and just nodding at what you were saying or pointing. You had known him long enough to know that there was no point in asking him directly what was wrong, so you tried to start a discussion.
"So, what do you wanted to show me?" You saw his Adam's apple go up and down as he swallowed. Never once did he look at you in the eyes.
“I... I found a park last time I came. It's pretty quiet and...”
“Wait a minute. Is Edward Allison Jones really stuttering?”! He groaned and passed a hand in his curls while his face and ears blushed.
“Please shut up, Y/N...”
“Okay, okay, I'll stop teasing you! So, where is that park?" He smiled at you before taking your hand in his in a bold gesture. Now, it was your turn to blush furiously, his calloused hand feeling like a fire onto your skin.
~
You were lying in the shade of a tree, Eddie gently scraping the strings of his guitar. You had long since closed your eyes, letting Eddie's music rock you. You could feel Eddie's gaze on you, and you started thinking quietly. You were fully aware of your feelings towards him and, even though it hurt you more than anything you'd been through, you accepted that he would never feel the same way towards you. And even if he would, he had been in the army for years and had siblings to feed. However, the army strictly forbade relations between soldiers and, if Eddie were to be taken out of the army, he would no longer be able to help his family. You couldn't do that to him. So, you buried your feelings deep inside you, contenting yourself with little moments like these. Where it was just the two of you and you almost forget that a war was raging. But part of you didn't want to lose hope. So, you found yourself saying one of the stupidest things in your life.
"Does it count as a date, Eddie?” As soon as the words crossed the barrier of your lips, you regretted them. You could only hope that Eddie would take them as a joke and not end your friendship while mentally slapping you. He looked at you with big eyes before turning his head away. You've never seen anyone go through so many shades of red in such a short time
“It depends greatly on your answer.” he whispered so low, you barely heard him. The music had stopped.
“Huh?” You tilt your head to the side, the dread in your veins being replaced despite yourself by hope. Eddie couldn't suppress a smile at your face.
“If I told you it was a date, what would you say?” At that moment, Eddie felt like he had just thrown his heart at your feet and was holding his guitar so tight that his fingers were white. You opened your mouth and then closed it like a fish outside the water. You could lie, but you were tired of hiding your feelings from Eddie. So, you took a deep breath and opened your mouth:
“If it were a date, I would be the happiest and luckiest woman in the world.” Eddie released a breath that he did not know he was holding and loosed his grip on his guitar. He smiled at you with joy, relief and love and, before you knew it, his lips were on yours. You, on the other hand, didn't understand what was going on. But when Eddie's lips were on yours, you sighed with contentment. You maybe didn't understand what was going on, but it felt right. You were both a nervous wreck nut you somehow managed to make it work and the kiss ended with you smiling softly at each other, still close enough to feel the other's breath on your face.
“You got no idea of how long I've been waiting to do this.” He muttered. You could feel his lips brushing yours as he spoke. You smirked, looking at his lips once more before looking up to his eyes.
“I think I got a pretty good idea, though.” You whispered under your breath, feeling like you were drowning in his blue eyes.
“Does that mean I can do it again?”
“As many times as you want, until the end of times.” He smiled widely at you before he leaned down again.
That day, Andrew earned 150 bucks on your backs through a bet. You were too blissful to be mad at him and all the ones who had bet.

"Oh but that's the irony, broken people are not fragile." - c.sammy jr.
"Just calm down, it's not your fault." Y/N whispered sitting in Ack Ack's lap stroking his greasy hair gently as she looked at him with more compassion, love and understanding in her eyes than anyone had ever looked at anybody.
"I know. I just wish I could save those boys." Haldane whispered as he slowly closed his eyes melting under Y/N's tender touch. Somehow, it brought peace into his heart and mind. Her soft yet blood-stained hand caressed his face gently, brushing away all the worry, fear and stress. Even though just for a moment.
"You did all you could. You saved many others, Andy. I'm here only because of you. So is Eddie, Burgin, that sweet guy Eugene or Snafu. We all know it and you can't even imagine how grateful we all are that you're our leader." Y/N smiled as a wave of memory flashed through her mind. Andrew Haldane was the finest officer and leader K Company, 1st Marine Divison had ever had.
"You gotta stop saying things that make me want to kiss you." Ack Ack chuckled opening his eyes that immediately met with hers.
"Who says I'm not doing it just because of that?"
"What are you implying, private Y/L/N?"
"Just kiss me already goddamn it, Captain Haldane."
And he did as he was told. Their lips met for a long loving kiss and both of them felt, as strange and impossible as it sounds, safe in each others' arms. They created a new hope in the middle of war on an unknown little island called Peleliu, that lasted forever in their hearts and kept them going for the other one.
"Captain Haldane, I just want to-" Hillbilly's voice trailed off as his eyes landed on the young couple so close to each other in the muddy foxhole.
"Sorry, didn't see you there, private Y/L/N." Edward chuckled, his cheeks heating up a little bit.
"It's alright, Lieutenant. What do you need?" Andrew smirked blushing even harder than the soldier in front of him. Y/N found the situation rather hilarious than intimidating and burst out in a hearty laugh right after.
"Just w-wanted to let you know the boys are all d-dug in for the night, the p-patrols are working as usual." Hillbilly stuttered as he adjusted his M1 on his shoulder in all the sudden nervousness he found himself in.
"Thank you for the information, Lieutenant. You may go." Haldane nodded at Eddie smiling a bit to show him everything's okay.
"Well, that was awkward." Y/N stated once Hillbilly left them in the darkness to themselves.
"Kind of." Andrew laughed as he lifted himself up on his arm pulling her into his embrace. "He'll blush every single time he sees us for at least another 5 days."
"But that's a problem of our future selves. Now, where were we before Eddie interrupted us?"
"You're right, private. Let me fix that."

Vance, J. D., author. Hillbilly elegy : a memoir of a family and culture in crisis. First Harper paperback edition. "Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis--that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were "dirt poor and in love," and moved north from Kentucky's Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that this is only the short, superficial version. Vance's grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother, struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, and were never able to fully escape the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. Vance piercingly shows how he himself still carries around the demons of their chaotic family history. A deeply moving memoir with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country." -- Publisher's description.

"In the wake of yet another set of police killings of black men, Michael Eric Dyson wrote a tell-it-straight, no holds barred piece for the NYT on Sunday July 7: Death in Black and White (It was updated within a day to acknowledge the killing of police officers in Dallas). The response has been overwhelming. Beyoncé and Isabel Wilkerson tweeted it, JJ Abrams, among many other prominent people, wrote him a long fan letter. The NYT closed the comments section after 2,500 responses, and Dyson has been on NPR, BBC, and CNN non-stop since then. Fifty years ago Malcolm X told a white woman who asked what she could do for the cause: Nothing. Dyson believes he was wrong. In Tears We Cannot Stop, he responds to that question. If we are to make real racial progress, we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how black grievance has been ignored, dismissed or discounted. As Dyson writes: At birth you are given a pair of binoculars that see black life from a distance, never with the texture of intimacy. Those binoculars are privilege; they are status, regardless of your class. In fact the greatest privilege that exists is for white folk to get stopped by a cop and not end up dead...The problem is you do not want to know anything different from what you think you know...You think we have been handed everything because we fought your selfish insistence that the world, all of it--all its resources, all its riches, all its bounty, all its grace--should be yours first and foremost, and if there's anything left, why then we can have some, but only if we ask politely and behave gratefully"--Provided by publisher.

Albert Einstein's achievements are not just milestones in the history of science; decades ago they became an integral part of the twentieth-century world in which we live. Like no other modern physicist he altered and expanded our understanding of nature. Like few other scholars, he stood fully in the public eye. In a world changing with dramatic rapidity, he embodied the role of the scientist by personal example. Albrecht Folsing, relying on previously unknown sources. And letters, brings Einstein's "genius" into focus. Whereas former biographies, written in the tradition of the history of science, seem to describe a heroic Einstein who fell to earth from heaven, Folsing attempts to reconstruct Einstein's thought in the context of the state of research at the turn of the century. Thus, perhaps for the first time, Einstein's surroundings come to light.

Gay, Roxane, author. Bad feminist : essays. First edition. A collection of essays spanning politics, criticism, and feminism from one of the most-watched young cultural observers of her generation, Roxane Gay. "Pink is my favorite color. I used to say my favorite color was black to be cool, but it is pink, all shades of pink. If I have an accessory, it is probably pink. I read Vogue, and I'm not doing it ironically, though it might seem that way. I once live-tweeted the September issue." In these funny and insightful essays, Roxane Gay takes us through the journey of her evolution as a woman (Sweet Valley High) of color (The Help) while also taking readers on a ride through culture of the last few years (Girls, Django in Chains) and commenting on the state of feminism today (abortion, Chris Brown). The portrait that emerges is not only one of an incredibly insightful woman continually growing to understand herself and our society, but also one of our culture. Bad Feminist is a sharp, funny, and spot-on look at the ways in which the culture we consume becomes who we are, and an inspiring call-to-arms of all the ways we still need to do better.

Sachs, Jeffrey, author. The ages of globalization : geography, technology, and institutions. "Today's most urgent problems are fundamentally global. They require nothing less than concerted, planetwide action if we are to secure a long-term future. But humanity's story has always been on a global scale, and this history deeply informs the present. In this book, Jeffrey D. Sachs, renowned economist and expert on sustainable development, turns to world history to shed light on how we can meet the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. Sachs takes readers through a series of six distinct waves of technological and ideological change, starting with the very beginnings of our species and ending with reflections on present-day globalization. Along the way, he considers how the interplay of geography, technology, and institutions influenced the Neolithic revolution; the spread of land-based empires; the opening of sea routes from Europe to Asia and the Americas; and the industrial age. The dynamics of these past waves, Sachs contends, give us new perspective on the ongoing processes taking place in our own time-and how we should work to guide the change we need. In light of this new understanding of globalization, Sachs emphasizes the need for new methods of international governance and cooperation to achieve economic, social, and environmental objectives aligned with sustainable development. The Ages of Globalization is a vital book for all readers aiming to make sense of our rapidly changing world"--.

Brooks, Max. The Harlem Hellfighters. First edition. "From bestselling author Max Brooks, the riveting story of the highly decorated, barrier-breaking, historic black regiment--the Harlem Hellfighters. The Harlem Hellfighters is a fictionalized account of the 369th Infantry Regiment--the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. From the enlistment lines in Harlem to the training camp at Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the trenches in France, bestselling author Max Brooks tells the thrilling story of the heroic journey that these soldiers undertook for a chance to fight for America. Despite extraordinary struggles and discrimination, the 369th became one of the most successful--and least celebrated--regiments of the war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them, spent longer than any other American unit in combat and displayed extraordinary valor on the battlefield. Based on true events and featuring artwork from acclaimed illustrator Caanan White, these pages deliver an action-packed and powerful story of courage, honor, and heart"--. Browning, Christopher R., author. Ordinary men : Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the final solution in Poland. Revised edition. One morning in Józefów -- The order police -- The order police and the Final solution : Russia 1941 -- The order police and the Final solution : deportation -- Reserve Police Battalion 101 -- Arrival in Poland -- Initiation to mass muder : the Józefów massacre -- Reflections on a massacre -- Łomazy : the descent of Second Company -- The August deportations to Treblinka -- Late-September shootings -- The deportations resume -- The strange health of Captain Hoffmann -- The "Jew hunt" -- The last massacres : "Harvest festival" -- Aftermath -- Germans, Poles, and Jews -- Ordinary men. In the early hours of July 13, 1942, the men of Reserve Police Battalion 101, a unit of the German Order Police, entered the Polish Village of Jozefow. They had arrived in Poland less than three weeks before, most of them recently drafted family men too old for combat service--workers, artisans, salesmen, and clerks. By nightfall, they had rounded up Jozefow's 1,800 Jews, selected several hundred men as "work Jews," and shot the rest--that is, some 1,500 women, children, and old people. Most of these overage, rear-echelon reserve policemen had grown to maturity in the port city of Hamburg in pre-Hitler Germany and were neither committed Nazis nor racial fanatics. Nevertheless, in the sixteen months from the Jozefow massacre to the brutal Erntefest ("harvest festival") slaughter of November 1943, these average men participated in the direct shooting deaths of at least 38,000 Jews and the deportation to Treblinka's gas chambers of 45,000 more--a total body count of 83,000 for a unit of less than 500 men. Drawing on postwar interrogations of 210 former members of the battalion, Christopher Browning lets them speak for themselves about their contribution to the Final Solution--what they did, what they thought, how they rationalized their behavior (one man would shoot only infants and children, to "release" them from their misery). In a sobering conclusion, Browning suggests that these good Germans were acting less out of deference to authority or fear of punishment than from motives as insidious as they are common: careerism and peer pressure. With its unflinching reconstruction of the battalion's murderous record and its painstaking attention to the social background and actions of individual men, this unique account offers some of the most powerful and disturbing evidence to date of the ordinary human capacity for extraordinary inhumanity.

Introduction : To hope rather than to fear -- The confidence of the whole people : visions of the Presidency, the ideas of progress and prosperity, and "We, the people" -- The long shadow of Appomattox : the Lost Cause, the Ku Klux Klan, and Reconstruction -- With soul of flame and temper of steel : "the melting pot," TR and his "bully pulpit," and the Progressive promise -- A new and good thing in the world : the triumph of women's suffrage, the Red Scare, and a new Klan -- The crisis of the old order : the Great Depression, Huey Long, the New Deal, and America First -- Have you no sense of decency? : "making everyone middle class," the GI Bill, McCarthyism, and modern media -- What the hell is the presidency for? : "segregation forever," King's crusade, and LBJ in the crucible -- Conclusion : The first duty of an American citizen. "We have been here before. In this timely and revealing book, ... author Jon Meacham helps us understand the present moment in American politics and life by looking back at critical times in our history when hope overcame division and fear. With clarity and purpose, Meacham explores contentious periods and how presidents and citizens came together to defeat the forces of anger, intolerance, and extremism. Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called 'the better angels of our nature' have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and Lyndon B. Johnson, and illuminating the courage of such influential citizen activists as Martin Luther King, Jr., early suffragettes Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt, civil rights pioneers Rosa Parks and John Lewis, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Army-McCarthy hearings lawyer Joseph N. Welch, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. He writes about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the birth of the Lost Cause; the backlash against immigrants in the First World War and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s; the fight for women's rights; the demagoguery of Huey Long and Father Coughlin and the isolationist work of America First in the years before World War II; the anti-Communist witch-hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy; and Lyndon Johnson's crusade against Jim Crow. Each of these dramatic hours in our national life has been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back, to assert hope over fear--a struggle that continues even now. While the American story has not always--or even often--been heroic, we have been sustained by a belief in progress even in the gloomiest of times. In this inspiring book, Meacham reassures us, "The good news is that we have come through such darkness before"--as, time and again, Lincoln's better angels have found a way to prevail."--Dust jacket.

Kidd, Sue Monk. The invention of wings. The story follows Hetty "Handful" Grimke, a Charleston slave, and Sarah, the daughter of the wealthy Grimke family. The novel begins on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership over Handful, who is to be her handmaid, and follows the next thirty-five years of their lives. Inspired in part by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke (a feminist, suffragist and, importantly, an abolitionist), the author allows herself to go beyond the record to flesh out the inner lives of all the characters, both real and imagined. -- Provided by publisher. "Hetty 'Handful' Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke's daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women. The novel is set in motion on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other's destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love. As the stories build to a riveting climax, Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love, and ostracism before leaving Charleston to find her place alongside her fearless younger sister, Angelina, as one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women's rights movements. Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, the author goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful's cunning mother, Charlotte, who courts danger in her search for something better. This novel looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved. -- Publisher's description.

Machado, Carmen Maria, author. Her body and other parties : stories. Contains short stories about the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies. "In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies. A wife refuses her husband's entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store's prom dresses. One woman's surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella 'Especially Heinous,' Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naïvely assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgängers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes. Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction." -- Publisher's description.

Quick Bits:
A Walk Through Hell #4 focuses largely on flashbacks to the case the agents were working before whatever’s currently happening happened and...I’m not really sure of anything that’s going on. I think that’s kind of the point, unsure as to how everything is supposed to connect and what any of it all adds up to. Great art from Goran Sudžuka and Ive Svorcina, though.

Beyonders #1 is off to a great start. Between this and The Lost City Explorers, it seems like AfterShock right now has pseudoarchaeology stitched up and it’s wonderful. Paul Jenkins, Wesley St. Claire, and Marshall Dillon kick this one off with a wee bit more crunch, though there’s a very interesting upheaval this issue that will make you wonder what’s going on.

Bone Parish #2 takes a deep dive in to some of the foundational moments of the Winters clan, even as they begin to deal with the fallout of one of their dealers dying from an overdose. This is great stuff. The art from Jonas Scharf and Alex Guimarães is incredible. Great detail and atmosphere, perfectly bringing to life the premise and characters from Cullen Bunn.

Brothers Dracul #5 circles back around to the beginning of the story, as we reach the end of this interesting retelling and interpretation of the intersection of both the historical and legendary story of Vlad the Impaler, from Cullen Bunn, Mirko Colak, Maria Santaolalla, and Simon Bowland. There’s an interesting twist here that certainly paints Vlad’s action in a different light, and I hope we see it followed up upon in a second series.

Cyber Force #5 is a nice change of pace as Bryan Hill, Matt Hawkins, Atilio Rojo, and Troy Peteri introduce us to another old familiar face. This incarnation of the team definitely is taking its time to be brought together, but when the storytelling is as entertaining and the artwork is as gorgeous as this, it doesn’t really matter. To note, though, this is not the kind of decompression that feels empty or padded, it’s just fleshing out characters and their lives more than what we’ve seen before.

Daredevil Annual #1 presents a standalone story of Misty Knight’s days as a detective and her first meeting with Daredevil. It’s good. It feels a bit more like a pilot for a Misty Knight series than necessarily a Daredevil tale, but, as I said, it’s good. The art from Marcio Takara and Marcelo Maiolo is nice. I really like Takara’s style which gives me hints of Phil Hester, Jim Mahfood, and Tomm Coker.

Euthanauts #2 is a thing of beauty. Nick Robles and Eva De La Cruz are seriously delivering some of the best art in comics right now with this series. Not even to mention how Tini Howard is making the weird science seamless in the dialogue. This is great.

Harbinger Wars 2 #4 is kind of the end to this, but the ramifications and fallout are all supposed to appear in the Aftermath issue. That being said, Matt Kindt, Tomás Giorello, Renato Guedes, Diego Rodriguez, and Dave Sharpe go all out for the spectacle in this final confrontation between Livewire and X-O Manowar. It is still kind of insane how Capshaw could possibly consider what GATE and OMEN have done as being “good”, especially in light of Palmer going absolutely batshit insane, but it does lead to interesting set-up for future conflicts.

Hillbilly: Red-Eyed Witchery From Beyond #1 begins the next adventure of the black-eyed tramp. I get a bit of a Beowulf vibe from Eric Powell’s set-up and I’m interested to see where it goes. This series sees Powell passing on the artistic duties to Simone Di Meo, Brennan Wagner, and Warren Montgomery and it’s an interesting visual shift from the washes of Powell’s own work in the original series. I quite like Di Meo’s style, which reminds me a bit of James Harren and Troy Nixey.

House Amok #1 is something I’m not sure I can describe. It’s kind of a family drama, but if that family were all collectively sharing a hallucinatory experience or delusion. Hunt for Wolverine: Dead Ends #1, like all four of the Hunt for Wolverine mini-series, is kind of a bit of treading water. I cannot say it or any of the previous series are bad, taken on their own separated from this “event”, they’re usually quite good, but as a whole it’s kind of disappointing. It’s a search for Wolverine that kind of comes up empty, acting as a prequel to the return of Wolverine, despite already having returned in Marvel Legacy and hopped across numerous different titles, before apparently being used for evil, as per throwaway bits in the fourth issues of those previously mentioned minis that didn’t necessarily connect with the plots of those minis. It feels a bit scattered and unnecessary, unfortunately, especially when it comes to comparing notes, coming up with the organization we already knew was behind it, and a bit of hand-waving mystery and grandstanding that still tells us a whole lot of nothing. It’s sound and fury. All of which is a bit of a shame because I otherwise generally enjoy the work of Charles Soule and Ramon Rosanas.

Jessica Jones #2 reaffirms that this is one of the best things that Marvel is currently publishing, with the next two chapters in this story. Kelly Thompson’s dialogue, narration, and banter throughout this issue is spot on, propulsive, and funny as hell when it needs to be, but what elevates it is that this isn’t your typical talking heads approach. The characters are doing stuff, like hunting sea monsters, instead of sitting at a desk or whatever. It’s a refreshing change that overall just makes this all the better. Not to mention Mattia De Iulis’ stunning artwork. It’s slick and polished with a line style that somewhat reminds me of Paul Gulacy and a bit of Rick Mays, and an approach to shadow and colour similar to Frazer Irving. This is a great series that really shouldn’t be missed.

Judge Dredd: Under Siege #4 wraps up this entertaining series from Mark Russell, Max Dunbar, Jose Luis Rio, and Shawn Lee. I really like Dunbar’s take on Dredd and the Russell’s idea of people creating their own law in the absence of law is an interesting philosophical counterpoint to the idea of man naturally sliding towards a state of chaos. Even the mutants striving for society is an interesting challenge to the typical idea of things falling apart.

Paradise Court #2 continues to be an entertaining horror comic from Joe Brusha, Babisu Kourtis, Leonardo Paciarotti, and Taylor Esposito. This gives us the part of the story where our protagonist is experiencing the horror and everyone else is telling her she’s just imagining it, but it’s still well told and well illustrated.

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1 is about as perfect a crossover of two properties as you can get. Morty trying to get into D&D because he thinks it will get him laid is the perfect in to the world of the game and the cartoon, perfectly blending the two for fans of both without alienating or diminishing either. Jim Zub, Patrick Rothfuss, Troy Little, Leonardo Ito, and Robbie Robbins are faithful to both and in doing so deliver a wonderful beginning to this story, that also educates along the way.

Runaways #12 is easily one of the best issues in what has already been an exemplary series. Rainbow Rowell, Kris Anka, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Carmagna focus here on forgiveness, acceptance, and second chances, with some truly beautiful character work between Gert & Victor and Nico & Karolina. If you don’t have a giant grin on your face by the end of the issue, I question your humanity.

Submerged #2 is still weird, very weird, but there’s some really good bits in here demonstrating some of the emotional manipulation that family members sometimes employ. Beautiful, ethereal artwork from Lisa Sterle and Stelladia.

Venom: First Host #1 is somewhat strange to see in light of where Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman have taken the character, but this limited series from Mike Costa, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessy, Dono Sánchez-Almara, and Clayton Cowles serves as both an interesting addendum to the symbiote’s history and as a continuation (and likely capstone) to the previous creative team’s run. It’s pretty decent.

Web of Venom: Ve’Nam #1 is a one shot fleshing out the backstory of Rex Strickland and the SHIELD experiment that bonded the early symbiotes to soldiers set loose during the Vietnam War. It’s an entertaining tale with some nice guest stars and sweet art by Donny Cates, Juanan Ramírez, Felipe Sobreiro, and Clayton Cowles. I particularly like the scratchy, faded look in the art to make it look a bit “old”.

X-23 #3 is great. Mariko Tamaki has nailed the characters and the art from Juann Cabal and Nolan Woodard is incredible. The page designs alone elevate the storytelling immensely.

The X-Files: Case Files - Hoot Goes There? #2 concludes the second of this new approach of a series of mini-series and it’s...weird? Funny, but weird. Definitely taking a page out of some of the more outlandish episodes of the series, where you question whether or not what you saw happened actually happened. Still, it’s entertaining, which is all that really matters. Fun from Joe and Keith Lansdale, Silvia Califano, Valentina Pinto, and Shawn Lee.

X-Men Blue #34 looks like it largely serves as a capstone to Cullen Bunn’s work with Magneto over the past four years or so, as he winds down his run here and continues to tidy the characters up a bit before he’s done and hands the reins off to the next band of storytellers. It feels like there’s a lot more here that he would have like to have told, but what we get here is still excellent. The hints at the next stage for Magneto and mutantkind are intriguing. Great art from Marcus To and Matt Milla.

X-O Manowar #18 gives an interesting transition from this flashback of Aric’s pre-Shanhara life to his return to Earth, focusing on how ideas, people, and culture keeps changing. Matt Kindt delivers a pretty chilling reaction to it. All with some nice artwork from Trevor Hairsine, Brian Thies, and Diego Rodriguez.

What They Get You For Christmas.
CHARACTERS: Eugene Sledge, Bob Leckie, Andrew “Ack Ack” Haldance, Eddie “Hillbilly” Jones
ANONYMOUS SAID: hi there! could i get some xmas preferences for eugene/leckie/ack ack/eddie from the pacific and what they would get their s/o for xmas?
TAGS: mentions of war, drinking
AUTHOR’S NOTE: merry xmas and enjoy! <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
( EUGENE SLEDGE ) He came home for Christmas this year, and was able to reach out to you and spend the holidays with you. Eugene surprises you with a ring and a locket with a photograph of you and him together framed inside. That way. he’s always there in your heart no matter where he is.
__
Tumblr media
( BOB LECKIE ) Bob’s Christmas gift for you would be last minute, but he put in the thought and effort to surprise you when he comes home from Peleliu. He shows up at your door in the evening, greets you and takes you on a date, gifting you flowers and a book you’ve been wanting to read (he remembers the little things!)
__
Tumblr media
( ANDREW “ACK ACK” HALDANE ) This guy is experienced with his love life. He knows the right thing and is very charming and leading, those traits are what attracted you. Ack Ack gets you a new record player, with records of music you like. He plays one and you two slow dance in the living room on Christmas Eve.
__
Tumblr media
( EDWARD “HILLBILLY” JONES ) He knows you so well. Eddie definitely remembers things you are interested in, but he would definitely gifts you clothes. He would get you what you saw on a mannequin on display while strolling past the department store. It was sort of pricey, but Hillbilly would do anything to make sure you’re happy.

litearlly anything for Chuckler from tp, i love that man too much and ik you'll do him justice
Oooooh anything you say?? Oh honey ya'll have made me a most excellent offer lol
Tumblr media
Chuckler's eyes snapped open, gasping as the air flew into his lungs. He was alive......how was he alive?
He looked over his shoulder, the once stone figures of his friends standing stiff as the rain began to fall and thunder boomed overhead. The stone flew away to reveal his friends, Leckie, Runner, Hoosier......everyone that the Druun had turned to stone was coming back.
Leckie gasped as he awoke, his eyes wide in disbelief as he stared first at his hands then at Chuckler and the others as a sudden wave of emotion came over them all.
You were the last to awaken as Chuckler caught you in his arms, the both of you dripping wet with the rain. You looked up at him, overwhelmed that you had come back after drowning in a sea of Druun. You were here and so was Chuckler.
He kissed you as though you two had been separated forever, unable to tell if there were even tears or rain on his face. "I didn't think I was gonna see you again," he sobbed.
"It doesn't matter now," you told him. "We're alive."
You could hear the others cheering and dancing in the rain as you reveled in feeling Chuckler's arms around you again. You lifted your head when you heard something in the distance, something you had never heard before. Chuckler and the others looked to the huge waterfall that spilled into the lake and river below, the very one that had supplied Fang with water all these years.
One by one, bright blurs of shapeless colors bounded over the edge of the waterfall, one after another, each one different than the last. They came closer, taking a different shape, the serpentine creatures running on the mist and raindrops in the bright sunlight, leaping over their heads.
Everyone was in complete awe as they ran over their heads and yours, swirling and spiraling around you protectively. It didn't hit you, Chuckler and the others until they came close to you that you realized what they were.
Dragons.
After all this time, dragons had finally returned to Kumandra, bringing water, rain and restoring the sun parched lands to what they once were. Ferns, palms and grasses sprang from the grounds, the rice fields, once barren, were now teeming with brand new green shoots. Flowers bloomed on the walls and drooped down into the lake, brushing against the glassy surface.
"I don't believe this!" Leckie murmured.
The great beasts roared and unleashed a torrent of rain, drenching everyone below. You all laughed, smiled and danced, sticking your tongues out to catch the cool drops. Hoosier, Sledge, Leckie, Hillbilly, Tatum and Evanson shook out their hair, hollering with joy while others cupped their hands and splashed a handful of water onto their faces.
You and Chuckler watched happily as the dragons ran circles into the sky. After all this time.....life had once again come to Kumandra.

What We're Reading and the Best Books We've Read
A group of us got together to share what we're reading and what are some of our favorites that we've read in the past year. I thought I'd share the books that were mentioned with all of you.
The Nix by Nathan Hill, it's been compared to The Goldfinch, John Irving and Jonathan Franzen.
Accidental Superpower: The Next Generation of American Preeminence and the Coming Global Disorder by Peter Zeihan, interesting take on the United States and it's place in the world and how it got there.
The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson (as of this writing this is $1.99 on kindle) a lighthearted satirical novel.
Barkskins by Annie Proulx, many of us agreed on the recommendation of this one. an epic tale with the world's forests as the primary character. It's a big book but well worth the read.
Two books dealing with women in paintings; The Woman on the Stairs by Bernhard Schlink, the author of The Reader, and A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline, a fictional tale of the women who inspired Andrew Wyeth, and his painting Christina's World
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, another one that many of us recommended and also another big book. This sparked a discussion of whether a book is depressing or hopeful.
Catherine: Inside the Heart and Mind of a Great Monarch by Sigrid Weidenweber, historical fiction about Catherine the Great
Secrecy by Rupert Thomson, historical fiction in late seventeenth-century Florence
The Little Disturbances of Man by Grace Paley, short stories
Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner, historical fiction WWII
There were quite a few books that seemed relevant in our current political climate such as,
White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide by Carol Anderson,
The End of White Christian America by Robert P. Jones,
White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America by Nancy Isenberg,
Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi.
Also, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance, this one got us into a discussion about Appalachia and the problems in that area
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, this one we read in book club and was my absolute favorite book from last year.
The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by Rinker Buck, present day travel along the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami, quiet, spare novel about a japanese man (said to be reminiscent of Murakami's earlier works)
Commonwealth by Ann Patchett
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli, another one from book club that many of us highly recommended. This lead us into a discussion of other books about Vietnam such as
The Book of Salt by Monique Truong,
The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen
The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen
Then there was Isabel Allende's novels The House of the Spirits  and The Japanese Lover we agreed the former is the much better book of the two.
Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders (don't be scared away by the strange format, I feel it's definitely worth sticking with. You might even consider the audiobook with several well known actors narrating.) We did agree that George Saunders is a little quirky and not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, a memoir, was suggested as a good idea for book club
The World Between Two Covers: Reading the Globe by Ann Morgan, reading a book from every country
Two of Ann Patchett's novels were mentioned Commonwealth (which had mixed reviews) and State of Wonder
Also two of Dennis Lehane's novels, Mystic River and The Given Day (which we read in book club and agreed the movie about this series was not worth your time)
These last two books have local connections, both set in Oceanside with authors from Oceanside, although a century apart. Rain of Gold by Victor Villaseñor and The Mothers by Brit Bennett, (this is one some of us had read for book club and enjoyed quite a bit.)
I hope you find some books that interest you. Next month we'll be discussing our favorite authors and I'll be sure to post here and let you know who we like.
Happy Reading!

Edward “Hillbilly” Jones Fluff Alphabet
Tumblr media
A/N : I've never seen any The Pacific Fluff Alphabet so here I go! Hillbilly's one of my favorite characters and his death broke my heart into pieces so, please let me write something in which he didn't die, like Ack Ack. Hope you'll like it and don't forget that the requests are open for both Band of Brothers and The Pacific! If you want to be added to a tag list, please send me an ask (please specify if want to be added to the tag list of The Pacific and/or to the tag list of Band of Brothers).
Tag list : @wexhappyxfew

Masterlist Taglist Prompts
A = Admiring (What do they admire about each other?) Every day, you admire his devotion to his family. In Melbourne, he didn't buy anything for himself. That was all for his brothers and sisters. He was saving all his Marine money to send it to his mother for Christmas. You admire his devotion to his men. You admire his loyalty to Andy. You admire the man he is simply. He admires your kindness and generosity. There is not a day that goes by without you giving something to men. Whether it's a reassuring smile or ration bars, you always do everything you can to make them feel good. A sentence you said to him perfectly represented what you were doing: "Our home is far away, we don't know if we'll ever see it again, so we might as well make this place and these people a part of our home." You made them feel like they were at home. You made him feel like he was at home. And he admire you for it.
B = Baby (Do they want a family? Why/Why not?) Before the war, he would have said yes without hesitation. After all, he was the eldest of a big brother and, as a result, had learned to care for young children as a child. He loved children and children loved him. But after the war, he could not look a child in the eye without seeing the boys he had not been able to save. In particular, this boy from the patrol. He is still traumatized by the silence that followed. He had never forgiven himself, no matter what you had done. So no, he didn't want children anymore. When he's afraid you'll leave him to have a family of your own, you always reassure him that you'll both make great uncle (s) / and aunt, even godfather(s) /and godmother maybe. C = Comfort (How would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?) He hates to see you sad. As soon as he hears a noise that he doesn't like, whether it's a sob or a sniff, he'll run towards you and take you in his arms, gently cradling you. Having many brothers and sisters younger than himself, he is used to giving comfort and reassurance. As he rocks you, he hums in your hair because he knows that you find it soothing had you like to hear the vibments in his chest. On the other hand, when you have a panic attack, he changes his method. In some way, seeing you trapped in what you saw hurts him more than taking that bullet from Peleliu because he feels like he's let you down. He feels like he couldn't protect you. When he enters your house and finds you in the fetal position in a corner of your room, his heart breaks into a thousand pieces, but he does his best to fight the tears that come to his eyes and gently but firmly forces you to put your head against his heart because he knows that most of your panic attacks are related to him and Peleliu, making him feel even more guilty. In general, he will gently tell you about the good times he spent with you, how you met, when he fell for you and other anecdotes until you felt better. After, he will make tea for both of you and you settle into your bed, sometimes he takes his guitar or sometimes you just cuddle. D = Date (What are dates with them like?) Let me tell you one thing. He's doing everything he can in a time of war. Hell, he even stole food from the kitchen for you. And even if you always reassure him, he always apologizes because he thinks you deserve much more than a walk in a park in Australia, a breakfast on the beach in Pavuvu or a race on the beach. The only date he considers a date to your height is when he took you dancing in Melbourne. And even that night was ruined by the MP. But he's trying. Because you're his Queen. And that according to him, you deserve the whole world. E = Everything (You are my ____ (e.g. my life, my world…)
You're my muse. F = Feelings (When did they know they were in love?) They were at war. This was not the time to find a soul mate. What you had was pure friendship. He had forgotten how many times he had repeated this sentence. You were a great friend. That's all. It doesn't matter how tingling he felt every time you touched, the heat in his chest every time you talked to him, or the ferocious rage he felt every time a man came too close to you. You were just a friend. At first, Andy thought it was quite funny. He even bet with the boys to find out when you were finally going out together. But at one point, he got tired of seeing his two best friends turn around and blush as soon as they saw each other as teenagers. So, he took matters into his own hands. No one but Hillbilly and he doesn't know what they said to each other, but the fact is Eddie offered to take you to town the next day. Of course, you accepted with joy. He took you to a park where you sat against a tree. You spoke, even sang, and when the sun set you fell asleep on his shoulder. Looking at your peaceful face, far from worry, Eddie knew there was nothing he could do, no matter what he said to himself. He was in love with you. G = Gratitude (How grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?) Since he was a child, he has sacrificed things for his brothers and sisters. Don't get me wrong, he's happy to make them happy even if it means he hasn't finished high school or he doesn't buy new clothes every day. It's just that when he sees you looking at that necklace in Melbourne, and he knows he can't buy it for you, he really feels guilty, even if you smile and tell him it didn't matter. He is extremely grateful for your patience and, well, for being you in general. So, he's fully aware of what you're doing for him and he's sure he's never been so grateful in his life. H = Honesty (Do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?) He hates to hide things from you, but he knows you do too, even if he doesn't like it. There are things you can't talk about. Things that hurt too bad to mention. Perhaps, later, you will take a moment to confide your deepest and darkest thoughts, but now it was too early. Now you're still getting used to not having a sky exploding above you. I = Inspiration (Did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? Like trying out new things or helped them overcome personal problems?) In general, he thinks you have made him a better man or at least the desire to be the best he can be for you. And even if he doesn't admit it, when you're around, he's less rough in his trainings which the boys are grateful for. When you met him, you were pretty insecure about your body as a woman. Especially in Melbourne, seeing all those girls your age in gorgeous dresses made your uniform tight. Walking the streets of Melbourne, you've heard derogatory remarks that you knew shouldn't be taken seriously, but it still hurts. Eddie made you more confident with your body, not wasting an opportunity to compliment you. Besides, he'll fight anyone who makes you sad. J = Jealousy (Do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?) He doesn't get jealous easily but when he is, he makes you feel it. He's not the type to start a fight in public but he certainly has a good memory when it's about you. If it's a boy he has under his command, that poor guy will blow up at all the trainings until Eddie thinks he's learned his lesson. Otherwise, well, let's say Eddie can be very persuasive when he wants but also very scary. Once, you must have forced him out of the bar before the kid got his pants in his pants. Afterwards, Hillbilly hugs you and kisses you passionately until your knees tremble. Oh, and, last thing, you're his. Just in case, you forgot. K = Kiss (How do they kiss? What was the first kiss like?) He kisses you like if you could disappear at any moment. Passionately, desperately and full of love. Yet he always manages to keep the kiss tender and sweet. Well, that's until you make a noise that particularly pleases his ears. Even if he loves to kiss you, in public he will be content with a kiss on the forehead or on the nose. What he particularly loves is the Eskimo kiss. The first kiss was clumsy and nervous but perfect at the same time. You were running through the streets of Melbourne, the MP at your errands. The adrenaline was pouring through your veins as you ran like you had a horde of Japanese chasing you. You hid behind a wall, your laughter constantly trying to get through the barrier of your lips. Your eyes shone with amusement and the light of the moonlight was reflected in your hair, he couldn't help it. But, oh my..., was he nervous...
Tumblr media
L = Love (Who says ‘I love you’ first?) You're the one who said "I love you" first, but you didn't do it on purpose. On Pavuvu, you contracted paludism like many other people, and it was Eddie who took care of you because you didn't want to stay in bed. He sang to you and everything that goes with it. And with the fever, you said without realizing that you loved him. Fortunately, you were already dating but that didn't stop him from feeling like he had found the Grail. When you heard what you said, you were completely mortified while Andy was making fun of you (he's still doing fun of you, almost 15 years after). M = Memory (What’s their favorite memory together?) On your wedding day. You decided to get married next to Eddie's family home to prevent his siblings from driving too far. You wanted to keep it rather private, but one invitation leads to another and you ended up with almost every K company's men in the room. Andy was his best man and you had all her sisters to help you with your hairstyle and your dress. Eddie would be lying if he said he didn't have a few tears in his eyes when he saw you walking down the aisle. You were gorgeous in your dress and Eddie always wonders how lucky he was. When you danced your first dance as a husband and wife was the first moment when he felt at peace with himself since the end of the war. N = Nickel (Do they spoil? Do they buy the person they love everything?) Eddie saves all his money for his family so when it's about gift, he's trying to do his best for Christmas or your birthday. As I said before, when it's about you, he has an excellent memory, so expect to find some jewelry you were watching on a date with him at the beginning of the year. O = Orange (What colour reminds them of their other half?) You remind him of the color of a sunset. A warm color that seems to wrap him in a cocoon of heat. It reminds him of the warmth he feels in his chest every time you're with him. P = Pet names (What pet names do they use?) He usually calls you by your name because well, he had been in the army since seven years so pet names aren't his strong suit but he sometimes calls you my Queen cause, well you are his queen and he would do everything for you. Q = Quaint (what are they non-modern favorite thing?) His guitar of course. During the war, he took her almost everywhere. But one of the reasons he takes her everywhere is because he knows that when he plays it, you feel soothed. (Yeah, his guitar is a person and he named her Melody) R = Romance (How romantic are they? What would they do to make their s/o happy? Cliché or rather creative?) This guy is a hopeless romantic. He even came to play the guitar under your window once. He is totally in the cliché because he doesn't know what else to do. When he was a teenager, he rarely went out to have fun so to go on dates... But he tries all the time to do everything he can to make you happy. S =Support (Are they helping their s/o achieve their goals? Do they believe in them?) He thinks it's in his role as a lover to support you no matter what you do. Every time you want to try something new, he will be there to encourage you. Unless it puts you in danger. Then, he will categorically refuse to let you do it. T = Talking (What do they like to talk about?) During the war, he talked a lot about the boys, how they were, what they did and, if you asked him to, he will talk a lot about his siblings. Now the war's over, he talks about the future, kids, music and all that stuff. He prefers listening to your voice though. U = Unencumbered (What helps them relax?) He's not relaxing. Even if he is exhausted, he will continue to do his job, whether it's taking care of the boys or working in the city. So you take matters into your own hands and prepare with Andy's help something that will force him to relax. When Eddie comes home, his favorite meal is ready with a hot bath. Then you give him a massage before going to bed and putting your hand in his hair until he fell asleep. V = Vaunt (What do they like to show off? What are they proud of?) Eddie is a very reserved person and he is very humble. He is not one to brag about something he has done. In Pavuvu, he was talking about the progress of his little sister, whom he had not seen in years. After Andy's daughter is born, and you're appointed godfather and godmother, he's definitely going to talk a lot about it. When he's drunk, though, he'll only talk about you. How perfect you are, how smart you are and all that. Andy can testify to that. W = Wedding (When, how, where do they propose?) Unofficially, he asked you to marry him on Pavuvu beach, shortly before landing on Peleliu. You walked hand in hand along the beach, enjoying a moment of peace. The wind was sweeping your hair and the light of the setting sun lit you up. You were just mind-blowing. He did not take his gaze from you, observing your features and memorizing them as best he could. Feeling his gaze on you, you turned your head to him before smiling happily, as if he had offered you the world. "When this is all over, do you... Will you agree to marry me?" At that moment, he was a blushing mess. Officially, he asked you as soon as you set foot off the train. He had sent money to his parents to send him a ring that matched his description of what he imagined. The second you set foot on the floor of West Virginia, he got to one knee and proposed you to the rules of the art under the hisses and the cheers of the boys.
Tumblr media
X = Xylophone (What’s their go-to song for karaoke?) Sinners ~ Lauren Aquilina (here) Y = Yearning (How will they cope when they're missing their partner?) Honestly? Every time you're away for more than half a day, he looks more like a stray puppy than to the first lieutenant everyone knows. He doesn't talk, just vaguely nods, looks all around him whenever he hears a noise hoping it's you. The first time Andy had the misfortune to send you on patrol, he felt like his best friend was going to collapse. Needless to say, Andy never separated you again. Z = Zebra (If they wanted a pet, what would they get?) Definitely not a rat or a crab. There were already enough of them on Pavuvu, none of you wanted to see them again in your life. So, to avoid mice, you get a cat. You get a Carthusian that you call Ack Ack, much to Andy's delight, because you found that was fitting the cat well. Eddie didn't stop laughing when you proposed that name. Of course, you get him when he's still a kitten. He always brings you dead mice, to your delight of course. His favorite place in the house is either under your bed or on the piano don't ask me why.

Charlie (Bill "Hoosier" Smith)
Requested by: @meteora-fc
Summary: You're a corpsman in the 1st Marine Divison and you have your dog with you there. During the shelling on Guadalcanal it gets lost but fortunately one charming soldier takes care of it.
Author's Note: This was such a beautiful request but I have mixed feelings about it. Thank you for reading.

Charlie.
Her dear Charlie got lost during the horrifying shelling on Guadalcanal and he was nowhere to find. Y/N ran from soldier to soldier asking for her closest friend. No one had seen him in the last two or three hours.
Her heart was shattered by the events, her hands still bloody from the nasty job she was supposed to do, a drop of sweat rolled down her temple.
"Hey, any chance you've seen a dog here, private?" Y/N approached a tall soldier walking somewhere with a pack of crackers in his hand. The man looked at her curiously and then, all of a sudden, he burst out laughing.
"Yeah," he managed to say out loud, "yeah I have. My friend kind of adopted it."
"Really?" Y/N's face brightened up instantly. Her cheeks blushed, her lips formed into a contagious smile and her Y/E/C eyes sparkled like some little kid's.
"Come with me. My name's Chuckler by the way." the soldier smiled kindly and Y/N thought that she saw something fraternal in his innocent eyes.
"I'm Y/N. You really made my day with those news, Chuck."
"It's Chuckler but you'll get the hang of it." he laughed nugging her side like an old friend.
"Chuck or Chuckler, who cares here?" Y/N pointed out ironically with a cheeky smirk on her face.
"Oh, Hoosier's gonna like you."
•••
When they arrived to Chuckler's 'place' with another three soldiers sitting around, the so called Hoosier was nowhere to find. And that meant Charlie too. Her smile faded a bit, and her heart sunk even deeper into the dark abyss of the war.
"You can wait here if you want. I'm sure they just ran off somewhere." Chuckler tried to reassure her with a calming smile but both of them knew that where possibly could they ran off in this hell?
"Thanks, Chuck, but the duty calls. See you around." Y/N winked at him sadly, waved at the other worn out soldiers and walked away toward her castle of blood, fatigue and calvary.

Y/N wiped her dirty hands into an army apron of some sort and crushed on a near wooden chair. Her head fell into her hands and she allowed herself to close her eyes for a moment. It was all getting to her, slowly but surely.
Then, as if by the God's will, a real loud bark echoed through the first aid tent. Y/N didn't know if she's dreaming or not. She jumped on her feet with new energy and ran toward her dog. Her Charlie.
He licked her mouth, nose, cheeks, chin, hands and this huge happy smile appeared on her face. Charlie brought her long lost will to live again, a new sense and reason for her life.
"Hey! Johnny! Wait!" a strange voice filled her ears and when a tall soldier with a cigarette in his hand approached them, Y/N finally understood.
"You must be Hoosier." she tried to keep her posture firm but she just wasn't able to hide all the newborn happiness in her heart. She was exactly like a sun.
"And you must be my future wife." Bill smirked looking at the female corpsman in front of him with a strong curiosity and something that almost seemed like a shyness. Hoosier had never felt something so deep towards a stranger, a person he had never met before. Until now.
Maybe it was the dog that connected them, he didn't know. But at this exact moment, in this very minute, Bill Smith felt safe.
Y/N blushed slightly at his sudden comment but didn't make any objections. Only if she knew that she'll agree to marry this sarcastic soldier after the war.
"Thanks for taking care of my dog," Y/N smiled kindly offering Hoosier a pack of cigarettes, "and his name's Charlie by the way."
The soldier took the "reward" hesitantly, his eyes still fixated on hers. Their fingers brushed slightly, it could be almost compared to a touch of feather, but to the duo it meant something so intimate, like a passionate kiss.
"That explains why he never listened when I called him Johnny." Bill laughed as he hid the pack in his pocket, very carefully so he'd have a proof that this conversation isn't just a dream.
As much as Y/N enjoyed talking to Hoosier, she had to go. There still was war going on and more wounded innocent people to take care of.
"Again, thanks for saving Charlie, Hoosier. Hope I'll see you around." Y/N smiled blushing a little bit - her mind took an inappropriate turn for a moment when her look wandered from his eyes to his lips.
"You won't get rid of me that easily,-"
"My name's Y/N."
Bill laughed taking a drag from his cigarette taking one look at the mysterious woman with a smile so contagious that he finally realized how his cheeks hurt from smirking all the time without him even knowing.
"Y/N," Hoosier mumbled to himself as it was some kind of his lucky mantra.
And it was. Bill kept trying for her and Y/N kept trying for him.
