I commissioned this from the lovely @/Green_leaves23 on Twitter, set within my DimiClaude fic, “Princes of Silver and Gold,” specifically in the later chapters. It’s not quite spoilery (good guys win the war, how novel of me), but it’s definitely an indication of where this fic is going. But also: they’re different flavours of making people underestimate them and I like it when they go apeshit.

Thinking more thoughts about WOL!Odette...
Specifically how she's a young, naïve nun who is crafted into a god killer by a woman who loves her and who she loves in turn. How Odette had been told her whole life in the convent that she was destined to be a saint. Of course she would be 'The' Warrior of Light, of course she's Hydaelyn's chosen, of course she and Minfilia fall in love. How this means she never questions the Scion's motives or care for her. She and Minfilia work so well because they understand their roles perfectly. Not always happily but they are both women of deep faith. Faith in Menphina, faith in Hydaelyn, faith in their comrades, faith in each other. They work so well because neither can place the other and their own happiness in front of their duty, their faith. That total understanding must be so freeing for them, to be able to love as fully as they can and knowing it's enough for their partner. Odette spends most of Heavensward with a knot of grief for a heart. She tries so hard not to borrow grief from the future but it is hard not to when they just don't know about Minfilia for so long. But there is so much going on in Heavensward and without Minfilia to consistently come back to I think she's very adrift. More than ever, this expansion is when she is most like a silent protagonist. I can't even touch that scene at the end of Heavenswards. You know the one. I did already talk about Minfilia in Shadowbringers...

just your regular sibling activities..going to the beach…disenchanting your sister before she takes possession of your soul…
I think after the events of season 2 Frida is probably a disenchantment expert now so Hilda would ask for her help this time around too. she’s very amused that her girlfriend is being bothered by the tide mice again. just like old times 😌
I’m sure it’s very obvious what’s going on here but I’ll give some context under the cut bc I can lol
.

so we know that the first time this happened, David and Johanna were aware of what was going on and had to take part in the disenchantment for it to work, but this time around that’s something Hilda really, really wants to avoid, both out of not wanting to get her sister into trouble, and not wanting to admit how the spell got into Mattie’s hands in the first place...so she asks for Frida’s help instead. she’s used to it after the jorts incident and honestly, isn’t surprised by this turn of events in the slightest. together they manage to pull off the disenchantment themselves and send the tide mice on their way (properly this time) without Johanna or Kaisa being any the wiser
Mattie actually isn’t too upset about saying goodbye to her mice friends bc Hilda knows her sister and gives her this incredibly watered-down explanation about how the tide mice belong back on the beach bc that’s their home and they’ll be ‘happier’ there - Hilda’s way of trying to explain why they had to go without starting a tantrum. plus being a witch, Frida is about one of the coolest people in the world as far as Mattie’s concerned so all she has to do is be like “hey wanna do a spell with us :))” and Mattie goes along with it immediately
after they’ve done the disenchantment they decide to just. not mention it to Johanna or Kaisa. it’s not a lie so much as just avoiding the truth for a little while, no biggie. (listen I had to draw the stupid two nickels joke bc Kaisa’s luck with her kids using this spell is hilarious to me, but she doesn’t actually find out about it for A While). when the topic does come up Kaisa’s mostly just impressed that her kids managed to carry that off without her knowing. like huh. that weird few days when the witch council were nice to her and the mysterious unexplained headaches are starting to make sense..
also, I think it’s worth mentioning that Hilda never tells Mattie what would’ve happened had they not performed the disenchantment in time, not wanting to scare her or make her feel bad - she’s just a kid after all, and had even less idea of what she was doing than Hilda originally did. Hilda just disposes of the spell once and for all and assumes that’ll put an end to it, which it does. for now anyway

I can’t say Hilda is really not comically evil that you can make stuff up about, what with the fact she’s the only member of her family who LOVES the child hunts and loves lots of child murder for Loptyrs amusement. She just doesn’t want her kids to be the ones killed like any good elitist hypocrite.
In a game called "Genealogy" of the Holy War, someone playing the Genealogy angle doesn't feel that odd in the setting, even if, yes, it is hypocritical in the sense that a named character's death weights more than 55 randoms !
But yeah, what's funny with Hilda is how she's 100% behind the child hunts, as opposed to her daughter (since we will never know anything about her son!) and husband (sort of).
I once joked about it, but she's the only member of the family who supports Julius's child hunts!

Ok so my initial theory is that this baby is Johanna (it just doesn’t look like Hilda, the hair seems too dark and the nose too big) but she’s been protected from the big fairy(?) thing for a while now, but now something has happened to break that protection? Maybe it’s something that has to be renewed?

Or maybe Johanna doesn’t even know, and it’s Astrid who’s placing some kind of protective seal. And she’s enticing Hilda and Johanna out to hers so she can renew it better, or because whatever the protection is doesn’t work so well in trollberg?

That could be what this scene is, Hilda’s been sneaking around following Astrid, because when she tries to ask her about her Father Astrid brushes her off with the ol’ “ah but he family you have right here is what’s most important” jargin, but still seems suspicious the whole time Hilda is there. When she catches her red handed, it turns out she’s actually hiding something from Johanna, who enters stage left at the last minute like excuse me what. And here could be Johanna returning, angry at Astrid for lying to her, Astrid feeling guilty, and Hilda disappointed that she’s no closer to finding her dad

Btw this scene of Hilda yelling for her missing mum is put right after the “I will come to take the girl” bit, which is also part of what’s fuelling my theory. ALSO looking at the Initial teaser with Hilda being so excited to find the fairies, it’d be really messed up if she was sooo excited but upon meeting them learned they were actually out to get her.
Anyways Johanna being born via magical means as opposed to Hilda is much more interesting to me, since Jo is for the most part just a regular dude who wants to eat cucumber sandwich and chill. It’s a fun misdirect!

Ofc this doesn’t sense anything abt Hilda’s dad, but I like the idea of him just being a normal deadbeat father in contrast to all this magic. Hilda learning that unconventional families are just as good as conventional ones, sometimes better. She desperately wants her fathers absence to be tied to some big adventure or magical reason, but it’s not.

The Primordial Ooze is a manifestation of hate that haunts Goopy Le Grande and fills him with self-doubt.
Gourdy 'O Hallow is a down on his luck bum who helps The Root Pack get back on their feet.
Nikos the Goatherd knew The Legendary Chalice and the Calix Amini hundreds of years ago.
Scylla and Charybdis, the two aunts of Cala Maria, who teach her about the world dividing men and monsters.
Nefurrtiti is an ancient deity that Djimmi The Great befriends on his travels.
The Patient is an ill-fated figure that is a passenger on The Phantom Express.
Privates Fidget and Hodgepodge are two of Werner's fellow soldiers drafted into the Inkwell fighting forces.
Sir Chaucer Canterbury is a knight who has found his own calling and befriends Grim Matchstick.
Gustavo the Gardenia, Pascal the Pansy, and Bailey the Bluebell are flowers that live in the garden with Cagney.
Vespa Flaxenjacket is a wasp from the other side of the island who has her eyes on Rumor's hive and empire.
Shep Hyde, who's determined to make his client, Sally, a star and might be a wolf in sheep's clothing.
"JugORum" Bellows, father of Ribby and Croaks, who has ties to the Moonshine Mob.

There's a few others I haven't illustrated yet, and then there will be several NPCs from the game that will be important (I'll be drawing some of them too!), as well as the Debtors/bosses themselves being the main characters! I'm really excited to start working on this AU again! Hope you like em!

"three cheers for knoll! three cheers for hilda! three cheers for eliwood!" "fear the deer!" a celebration lifting up the class heroes who'd carried them from underdog into the spotlight, and for all the deer who cleared the way valiantly to let them get there: —hip-hip hooray!

Something actually so deeply deeply beautiful about Hilda being a show about mothers. Johanns is not just a background character and the protagonist's overprotective mom, we understand her choices, we see her struggle with raising a child but also having a deep desire to male her thrive. The show is so beautifully written that we can see the narrative show us this mom's as individuals and to highlight their love for their children, no matter if they have a traditional mother-daughter role or not.
Our first instances with trolls is seing the troll mother go into Trollburg, being implied to be one of the first trolls to cross the wall, in order to save her child,
She later on trades her child with Hilda, and we see how both she and Johanna struggle with trying to find the perfect world for their children.
David's mom joins the Trollburg watch because se is worried about the world her son will grow up in.
The big ending of season two is about the trolls and their mother, about a mother that loves not only her children, but is also willing to protect the people of the city even if it means never getting up again.
In the end, it's Astrid, who raised Johanna all her life, who is willing to make the great sacrifice to protect both her and Hilda.
Johanna and the mothers of the show consistently choose their kids, making sacrifices out of pure love, but they are also complex themselves and are tied to their own set of beliefs.

On Friday night, Y’shtola found herself alone at the only bar in town.
“Leave your books and your research in your motel room for one night,” Hilda had said outside Y’shtola’s room only an hour ago, the same thing she’d said to Y’shtola every weekend since Y’shtola had arrived in town a few weeks ago. Y’shtola had shocked them both by agreeing, and then Hilda had shocked her by abandoning her for a pretty young woman, blonde hair divided into two braids over her shoulders, the moment their drinks had arrived. She’d given Y’shtola a shrug and a wave as she followed behind Joye, carrying both their drinks.
She could have left then, could have gone back to her room where her books and her research still waited for her. But something had held her back, something that had her keeping a vaguely interested eye on the crowd as she pushed her straw around her drink. 
Part of her—a small part—had hoped Corisande would be here tonight. Not that Y’shtola thought about them often, but they’d spent the greater part of the last few weeks together, with Corisande escorting Y’shtola around the Haillenarte ranch as she ran her tests on the land. It was only natural that her thoughts might stray now and again toward the ranch hand who had practically become her coworker. It was hardly her fault that ranch hand was six feet tall, with bright green eyes and the most sincere smile Y’shtola had ever seen. That was barely an observation worth noting—a simple declaration of fact.
She pushed thoughts of Corisande from her mind with a sip of a drink. She couldn’t deny there was some kind of connection between them, friendship and understanding forming between them from their very first meeting, when Corisande had shown both interest in and knowledge of Y’shtola’s work as a geologist. But Y’shtola was here for work, and she was not here for long—there was hardly even time for friendship. 
Anything else would only be a distraction.
“Mind if I join you, miss?” a soft voice said, pitched just loud enough to hear over the music. Y’shtola looked up and found herself staring directly into those bright green eyes, that sincere smile directed her way. 
“Oh,” Y’shtola said, unable to keep the note of relief out of her voice. “You’re here.”
Corisande tilted her head. Her long hair, free of its usual braid, fell in burgundy waves over their shoulder, soft pink highlights catching the warm light. “Were you waiting for me?”
Y’shtola shrugged, and tried to recover. “I figured you would show up sooner or later. Everyone else in town seems to be here.”
“There’s not much else to do on a Friday night around here,” Corisande said, with a knowing quirk to their smile that tugged at something in her, though she could not quite decipher what.
That did not bear thinking about. She tore her gaze from their mouth, letting it fall over them on its way back to her drink. Their usual plaid top had been left unbuttoned, the tails tied together in a knot on one side, revealing a low cut black tank top beneath. 
Y’shtola took another sip of her drink, mouth suddenly dry. 
“I didn’t expect to see you here, though.” Corisande set her drink on the table, a swirling sunset-colored concoction in a tall glass, and draped her jacket over the back of a chair before sliding into it. “Especially not sitting alone.”
“I was talked into taking a break,” Y’shtola said, tilting her chin to where Hilda sat with Joye, their heads bent close together. “And promptly discarded at the door for another woman.”
Corisande glanced over their shoulder, and a smile played on their lips when they turned back. 
“So you had no choice but to sulk at a table alone all night instead of, I don’t know, dancing,” they teased, gesturing toward the crowd on the dance floor that Y’shtola had kept an eye on all night—just for something to do, certainly not on the lookout for any pink tipped ears standing above the crowd. 
“I’m not sulking. I stayed to finish my drink,” Y’shtola said, swirling her glass in their direction. “Besides, I’m not much of a dancer.”
Corisande rested her chin in the palm of one hand as she sipped her drink, looking at Y’shtola with a glint in her eye that concerned her. There was an embarrassing swoop in Y’shtola’s stomach when Corisande smiled. She ignored it.
“Dance with me,” they said, tilting their head again so that Y’shtola had no choice but to follow the fall of their hair.
It took her a moment to realize what they’d said. She gave a short, incredulous laugh in response. Hadn’t she just said she was not much of a dancer? She opened her mouth to protest, but a voice boomed from the stage before she could speak. 
“Alright folks, you know what time it is! Who’s ready for some good old-fashioned line-dancing?”
Corisande’s lips parted, her eyes growing wide in excitement. She reached across the table and grabbed Y’shtola’s hand, pulling her to her feet and halfway to the dance floor before Y’shtola came to her senses with a shake of her head. 
“No, no, I don’t think that’s a good idea,” she said, though she could not quite get herself to pull her hand from Corisande’s, their callused fingers warm against hers. 
“As your appointed guide, I can’t in good conscience let you skip out on a line dance,” Corisande answered, reaching to take Y’shtola’s other hand as well. 
“You’re only my guide at the ranch,” Y’shtola said, still not stepping back. 
“Consider this an anthropological extension of your research, then,” Corisande said, squeezing her hands. “You’ll have fun, I promise. We can stand at the back, and if you get lost you can just watch me.”
Their lips curled into a sly grin then. “You look like a quick study.”
Y’shtola did not like the way her heart skipped a beat at their words. Music started up again on stage, and Y’shtola’s protests died in her throat when Corisande moved their hips in time with it. They tugged on her hands with each slow swivel, and Y’shtola could not stop her gaze from following the long line of their legs, from where their dark jeans tucked into their tall brown boots to where they clung tightly to the curve of their ass. 
“Please?” Corisande asked. “Just one song.”
“One song,” Y’shtola relented. Corisande beamed down at her, and Y’shtola could not help but smile back. 
She let herself be pulled into line at the back of the crowd. The dance had already begun, and Corisande fell easily into the steps beside her, while Y’shtola watched the woman leading and did her best to follow the callouts. 
After a moment, Corisande caught her eye, her lips already quirked into the teasing grin Y’shtola was quickly becoming familiar with. “Good, but I know you can give it more than that,” she teased.
Y’shtola kept her eyes carefully away from where Corisande’s fingers framed her silver belt buckle, her hips swaying. Instead she followed the next step, sliding to the left and punctuating it with a quick shuffle and spin, finding her rhythm easily as she picked up the steps. When she met their eyes again, their grin had grown wider. 
“As you said,” Y’shtola said, a smirk playing at the corners of her lips. “I’m a quick study.”
Corisande’s head tipped back with her laughter, a sweet sound that warmed Y’shtola more than any drink this place could serve. 
When the lines turned and Y’shtola found herself behind Corisande, it was difficult not to watch her. She leaned into each movement, her long wine-colored hair swaying, a carefree ease and rhythm to each step that somehow made Y’shtola more comfortable in her own movements. 
They turned again, facing the front of the bar, and together they clapped and stomped and stepped in place with the others. Y’shtola’s skirt swung and swirled about her knees as she kicked and glided. She slid to the right, just a bit too far, and Corisande caught her with one arm around her shoulders and spun them both around. They leaned in and, just loud enough for her to hear them over the music, said, “I knew you weren’t one to do things halfway.”
Now it was Y’shtola’s turn to laugh, bubbling breathlessly out of her as they released her. The lines turned, and she felt their eyes on her from behind. She cast a glance over her shoulder, and they met her gaze with a warm smile, one that felt inexplicably secret and knowing between them despite the crowd around them. 
They caught each other’s gaze more often than not for the rest of the dance, smiling and laughing as they stepped and clapped. Each glance set off a spark in Y’shtola’s chest, leaving her warm from more than just exertion.
Corisande’s dark blue pickup rolled to a stop outside of the motel. They’d passed the short drive in a companionable kind of quiet, Corisande with one hand on the wheel and Y’shtola watching the night pass by outside the window, settled in the jacket they had slung over her shoulders. Every so often their gazes met across the cab for a moment, until Corisande’s kind smile made Y’shtola’s cheeks heat and she had to turn away. 
Now that they’d arrived outside Y’shtola’s room, she found herself reluctant to end the night so soon. But she supposed there was no use in staving off the inevitable. 
“Thank you for the ride,” she said, forcing herself to unlock the door and reach for the handle, though she did not open it just yet. “And for the dance. I had far more fun than I expected tonight.”
She could just make out Corisande’s gentle smile in the dark. They leaned back and stretched their arm across the back of the seat. “Better than a night spent with your data?”
“Yes,” Y’shtola admitted with a small laugh, and their smile grew. “I think I needed the break—I’ve been so caught up in my work I’ve hardly let myself have one since I got here. It’s good to be reminded every once in a while.”
“Happy to help,” Corisande said, the sincerity of their tone causing an embarrassing flutter in Y’shtola’s chest. Before she could get out of the truck to avoid any further flustering sentiment, Corisande’s eyes darted to the radio, which had been playing at a gentle hum in the background since they’d left the bar. “In fact…”
They shifted toward Y’shtola. She froze, her breath caught in her chest as they leaned in, until they bypassed her in favor of the window crank. Y’shtola watched them roll down her window, and then hop out of the truck and come around to the passenger side. They opened her door and helped her out of the truck with one hand, before ducking back into the truck, leaning across the seat. 
“What are you doing?” Y’shtola asked, watching them. The volume on the radio climbed and a soft, slow song emanated from the truck’s speakers, a woman’s gentle twang carrying toward her. Corisande straightened and faced her, shutting the door behind them, but it wasn’t until Corisande held their hand out, palm up, that she understood what they intended.
“You haven’t had enough dancing?” she teased, but she took their hand. She hesitated a moment, and then rested her other hand on their waist.
They moved closer without pause, putting their arm around her shoulders. “One more dance, before you get back to work.”
“I wasn’t planning on doing any work tonight.”
“Sure you weren’t,” Corisande said, beginning to turn them in small, slow circles.
“Well,” Y’shtola said, a bit sheepishly. She looked up at Corisande, who smiled teasingly down at her. “I may have wanted to go over one set of results—but only one.”
“Of course, only one,” they agreed, in a tone that indicated they definitely did not believe her. “And then another, and another, until it’s four in the morning and you’ve scattered papers all over your room.”
They lifted their arm, leading her into a twirl as she laughed before pulling her back in, somehow closer than before.  
“You may have a point,” Y’shtola said, surprisingly pleased at the way they seemed to know her so well already. Corisande only hummed, and they fell back into the same comfortable silence they’d had in the truck. Y’shtola found herself leaning in, her head resting on their chest as they turned. She tried to remember the last time she’d felt this relaxed, but nothing came to mind. And yet it hardly seemed strange at all that she should find some kind of peace in their arms, a sweet distraction from her duties here, though she had only known them a few weeks. 
When the song ended, Corisande stopped turning them. They held Y’shtola for a moment longer, and then released her, stepping back. The cold night air rushed into the space between them, making her shiver.
“I suppose I will see you Monday,” Y’shtola said. It suddenly seemed an eternity between now and then, though in reality it was only a few days.
“I suppose so,” Corisande said, her smile small but warm. She squeezed Y’shtola’s hand before letting go. “If you need a break before then, you know where to find me.”
“The ranch? Or line-dancing at the bar?” Y’shtola teased, pleased when she was rewarded with Corisande’s laugh as they turned away, heading for the other side of the truck.
“Definitely line-dancing,” they called as they climbed into the truck, reaching over to turn down the volume on the radio.
Y’shtola got the feeling that Corisande would not drive away until she was inside her room, so she bid them goodnight and went inside. It wasn’t until their headlights had completely disappeared that she realized she was still wearing their jacket. She slipped her arms into the sleeves and pulled it close for a moment, letting the peppery scent that lingered on it take her back to the moment Corisande had held her close, her head against their chest as they spun. 
She shook her head clear of the memory, slipping the jacket off and hanging it over the back of a chair. Though she had planned to do some work, it seemed it would be a largely useless endeavor with the way her thoughts kept drifting toward Corisande.
Instead she readied herself for bed, and fell asleep to thoughts of Corisande’s hand in hers, and the sweet sound of their laugh.

The Faratok Tree - sorta ep analysis, sorta rambling discussion of themes
Okay, I want to talk about 'The Faratok Tree'. This is one of the more serious eps of the series. Or at least it seemed pretty intense. A lot of this is down to Hilda's intensity - like she's so desperate to get the giants to stay. This is the girl that stopped Trolberg being destroyed, and enabled the peace between Trolls and humans. You'd think she's done enough. But no. It's not even her world. But a part of Hilda seems to understand that if she can get people to not see the giants as monsters now, that this is going to thread through 'history' (this worlds future), and perhaps mean that the humans won't chase the Troll's away when they finally settle Trolberg. That they'll make peace, and the events at the wall, people like Edmond Ahlberg, and Erik, simply won't become what they were.
Maybe she did accomplish that at least.
Woodman as the voice of reason somehow weirdly worked. (I have to admit when I saw a screenshot of Woodman on the flaming wood pile I suspected this was something he had gotten them into and Hilda was saving his arse.). And what I absolutely love the best about this episode, is the theme that changing things takes time. Our actions may not have an effect for a very long time. People aren't just going to change like that. It takes time.
Honestly, whilst this maybe wasn't my fav ep, as there were other episodes I laughed more at... I think this is actually the best episode of the third season. It gets right to the core of who Hilda herself is. This kid, magical part fae or not, is so bloody persisitant the actions she chooses to take are going to ripple throughout time (look at how much Trolberg has changed. Trolls coming to nighttime events? Not posssible without Hilda). Imagine what this child would be capable of as an adult? But one thing's she's going to have to come to realise is that those changes aren't always going to come right away.
I can't really fault it in and of itself. But what I would've loved to see?
That theme of change to have carried through to the rest of the season. 'The Faratok Tree' was a powerful enough ep to set that up and to push it through.
This does also tie in 'damn there should have been more eps' because that's what this would have needed to happen properly. But I would've liked to have seen that theme carry through such as:
Have a marra ep. They've aged up to. How have they changed? Are they better behaved?
More eps with Louise. I really love this kid. Would've liked to see more of her hanging out with the freaky friends, and how this changed thier dynamic.
Safety Patrol. Hell, there should've been a safety patrol ep, with Gerda and Alfur. How are elves and humans interacting now its more official? Also, how are people responding to how Safety Patrol has changed. Gerda's in charge, and the direction is very clearly making contact with the magical creatures and forging alliances. And as bad as Ahlberg was, organisations do not like change. Show safety patrol officers not really wanting to change things and being a pain. Show the public not liking the change and protesting. 'Things were better under Ahlberg!' Show how the city is responding to the changes Hilda enabled through Safety Patrol, because you know they (ie: GERDA) would be driving this.
Victoria Van Gale. This was an arc that actually did get realised, though I would've liked if they'd linked it up to the change takes time theme (and obviously, though Victoria has changed, there are certain things that she cannot change). This might have worked good as its own episode, rather than tied up in the rest of the finale. (I frikkin love her but she does kinda steal the show as things played out).
And yeah, you know I was coming to it, but if you're going to have the season theme change taking time you absolutely cannot leave out Erik Ahlberg. I know he's a pain in the arse, and not a nice person, but the movie handled him really well. And one thing that got across was this man scared the absolute shit out of himself enough that he has plenty of motive change. But he's going to have to practically change his personality, and that's not going to happen in the the year (2 years?) between the movie and the last season. Have Hilda run into him in an ep, and having him trying and doing an absolutely terrible job of it. He's still much the same guy, but he has changed enough that instead of being destructive to those around him, he's beating himself up everytime he fails. Have Hilda tell him it's okay, change takes time, he's still accomplishing something even if it doesn't feel like anythings changed.
And, finally, that theme should be linked the the series final. Hilda ends up in a world where things are 'perfect' but they also don't change. And no change means no growth. I've got to be honest (and I know there probably weren't enough eps for this) but I would've put Victoria's arc in another episode. Which probably would have meant Astrid had to sacrifice herself... but... well... that would actually have worked and sometimes change does suck. Pretty much the Faratok Tree's themes would have tied really well to the series final - they just weren't quite connected as well as it could've been.
