Shiga Prefecture is truly an underrated place. It’s located just outside of Kyoto. I went to Hikone on my previous trip instead of heading to the crowded Kyoto one day. It was a nice change of scenery where there’s hardly any tourist around.
Hikone Castle
If you want an authentic castle experience that is not as crowded as Osaka Castle, you can visit Hikone Castle. The difference is that Osaka Castle is more like a museum where there are a lot of historical information and displays while Hikone Castle is well, more of a Castle, it’s preserved just the way it was. And you got a view of Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan!
There’s also a mascot of a Cat called Hikonyan, which I remembered was swarmed by locals for photos. Legend has it that the Castle Lord, Ii Naotaka was saved from a lightning strike when a white cat beckoned him to a nearby shelter at a temple. Since then the Cat became a symbol of good omen for House Ii so the mascot wears the iconic Samurai helmet of House Ii today.
Minakai
At the time I wasn’t aware there was a confectionary store nearby but according to this article, there is a western-style confectionery called, Minakai, located at Yumekyobashi Castle Road, which runs beside Hikone Castle. A place where you can chill after walking around the Castle, eating cakes and drinking juice!
You can find out more hidden gems in Shiga Prefecture like this at the link above or here.

Day #25 - Shiga: Hikonyan
A mascot from Hikone City. Their helmet is based on a samurai helmet that is on display at the Hikone Castle Museum. Staffs and the official blog refers to them as "Mochi".

Dandan Dawn" Episode 4 - Hikonyan no Koka
This was "Dandawn" Episode 4 - "Ooku no Insertion".
*Spoiler alert!
Atsuhime's face was silhouetted last week, but it appeared this time.
She was a princess with cute eyebrows.
Ikujima came out to the education staff and said, "Yes, I know Ikujima! I know the Ejima case!" but when I looked him up, he was a different person. The characters are different in the Ejima-Ikushima case, and the Ikushima in this case was a man named Shingoro Ikushima.
The 2006 movie "Ooku" was about the Ejima-Ikushima Incident.
Kawaji, Saigo, and Princess Atsuhime go out on the town to see Edo before they are accepted into the Ooku Palace. While enjoying a walk around Edo, Kawaji discovers a suspicious figure. This was Ii Naosuke.
The Hikone Clan, famous for its "red armor," is also called "Ii no Akaoni," or "Ii's Red Devil.
This is that one, isn't it? That's Hikonyan, isn't it? He is a cute character with a red helmet.
From Wikipedia
The president of my former company told me that Hikonyan was modeled after Ii Naosuke, but that was a lie. The correct model is the white cat that saved Ii Naosuke from lightning. It is important not to believe what you hear from others, but to do your own research.
The two political rivals came across each other and the situation was at a crossroads, but Atsuhime's quick thinking brought the situation under control. Atsuhime, as expected, has a strong spirit.
I thought Atsuhime would play a more active role in the drama, but she easily got married and left the scene. I guess they are in the phase of bringing out more and more main characters since there are only 4 episodes left.
Still, I learn something from each episode. I don't think Saigodon has played an active role yet.
Wait until next week!

One of my best days so far! Fleeing from the crowds of Kyoto to Hikone was a great idea. I met my lord and saviour Hikonyan, ate Hikonyan ice cream and bought tons of souveniers. Luckily at Hikone Castle there was a Sakura Festival as well, so I could enjoy this as well. Great day. I definitely wanna come back to Hikone and generally to Shiga prefecture. Lake Biwa is absolutely stunning!
