Fighting style She shifts between hard-and fast and defensive/protective as a knight. She appears reckless to the inexperienced, but she very much knows what she is doing. As a scholar, she is tactical, and very wait-watch-and-see.

Any difficulties with magical/physical disciplines? Red mage is the only magical discipline she is extremely good at, because it relies heavily on her physicality (channeling with precise rapier work) and on her personal mana pool. She is awful at drawing in external aether. Her magics as a scholar also lean heavily on her ability to work with the summoned fairy construct to do the bulk of the aether work while she performs the necessary manipulations and calculations. As a result, she was merely a middling arcanist, but is a very good scholar.

~~PERSONALITY TRAITS~~ Analytical, cunning, curious. She can be impulsive, but it is not because she is not considering the consequences, but often because she is very interested in what they will actually be. She is very self-assured in general.

Not enough to truly go after or do anything about, but people who she is, at best, cold towards if she ever has to interact with them. She gets on well with Alphinaud, as the two complement each other, his diplomacy making up for her lack of it, and her foresight making up for his frequent naivete. She snarks with Y’shtola and the two often banter like old maids. She merely has a working relationship with Thancred, but it’s not cold; it’s just not a close friendship, either. Tataru finds her vexing. Estinien and her have a deeply shared understanding that comes from both being front line participants in the dragonsong war. Krile and her do not understand one another, and tend to settle for just being cordial. She finds Urianger likeable, and gently needles him at times, and doesn’t always realise when he’s doing it back.

Any special gestures of affection they have with people in their life? She will, without fail, ask Lennier if he’s been working out, and will swoon when he performs physical feats (squats, pushups, etcetera) nearby.

~~HAVE DEALT WITH/IS DEALING WITH~~ Definitely has some PTSD. Also, her entire family has gone from lesser nobility to commoners with a status that, until recently, left a bad mark on their name (their status as a minor house was lost when the inquisition found evidence that some members of the family, cousins in relation to Zoissette, were hertetics). She keenly feels the disruption of life in Ishgard due to the end of the dragonsong war, but does not quite know how or what to feel about it.

Generally her studies started with things she thought would be helpful for the war effort; history, strategy, logistics, and tactics. Pokémon Solar Light & Lunar Dark Review

Intro:

The game starts in Soltree Town in the players room. The player is sitting in front of his/her TV and is watching a battle between two Pokémon trainers. Your mother comes in and tells you that your best friend, Rodney, is waiting for you downstairs to get your first Pokemon from Prof. Pinewood. You walk to the lab with Rodney and the Professor lets you choose one of three Pokemon. After choosing your starter, Rodney runs out of the lab. The Professor tells you about a young girl named Keira, who is getting the last Pokémon, but it seems that she has forgotten it. After finding Keira in Mossy Town her mother tells you to go back to your house, because your mother has a gift for you. Back in Soltree Town you receive the PokéCom and the Running Shoes from your parents.

From then on, the player will set off on adventures through the Rikoto region. Along the way, the player, Rodney, and Keira will battle eight Gym Leaders, while trying to complete the Pokédex. After managing to obtain all eight Badges, the player will head to the Pokémon League to battle the Elite Four and the Champion.

How to Play:

Download and extract this file to the folder of your choice. If you don’t have a program to unzip files, I recommend Peazip, which is safe and works well. Once extracted, double “Game.exe” to play.

Story:

The story progresses like a main series game’s plot. It’s notably most similar to RSE/ORAS, because there are two evil teams present: Team Solar and Team Lunar. They’re racing to find specific stones to revive and control their respective legendary of interest. Unfortunately, the climax of their role in the story is pretty disappointing to me, but I won’t say any further so not to spoil you. Aside from the villains, you have your usual tree-based professor, a few rivals, and your eight gym leaders. There’s also a mega evolution specialist, who battles in her castle, and is portrayed as unofficial gym leader. I especially liked this detail.

The characters are just okay, and dialogue can be a little jumbled at time. I like that you have three rivals rather than one, but they’re not very well fleshed out. Each has a gimmick, but not much personality past that. The gym leaders were also okay, but not overly memorable. The only honorable mention is Jax of the Elite Four, who I believe should have been the champion of the game.

There are some adult themes present in the story, but I don’t mean this in an explicit sort of way. Rather, the game addresses adult issues you’d find in the real world. For example, to use the taxi service in Rustbolt City, you need to battle their boss to convince him to pay his workers more, as they’re on strike at the time. You are also asked to steal for a robber at one point during a quest, which is pretty neat.

Overall, the plot and characters weren’t too impressive, but they weren’t terrible, either. There was a good foundation for both that was lost along the way, it seems. However, the story and characters are still serviceable and fulfill their overarching role.

Pokemon:

In this game, there are Fakemon instead of Pokemon, and this can be seen as either good or a bad. While the sprite work for the Fakemon grew on me, some are heavily based on already existing Pokemon. Also, some Pokemon don’t have the highest design quality. Lastly, many of the better Fakemon don’t evolve until they’re pretty high leveled, anywhere from the high 30s to the low 50s, kind of like in Gen 5. This can be seen either as a good or a bad thing, I suppose.

Luckily, there’s a lot of good things about the Fakemon too. First is the sheer amount of them: there are 358 Fakemon to choose from, which is more original Pokemon than have ever been put into a new game at once. This gives you a huge selection to choose from, so no two people will ever have the same team. The downside of this is it’s hard to keep track of them all. However, there are some great ones to choose from, whose movepools and abilities have been handpicked with care.

The original moves made for this game are also a nice touch. One that stood out to me is Thunder Strike, which is a nice middling electric move that’s more powerful than Thunder Shock, but less powerful than Thunderbolt.

I also absolutely love that your first party Pokemon walks with you. This is a feature that really should be brought back in main series games, and the fact that they took the time to draw all 358 original Fakemon (and each shiny form!) as walking companions is very impressive.

Gameplay:

In terms of difficulty, this game is very middling. It’s not too easy or hard. If you battle all the trainers and a good portion of wild Pokemon during your journey, gym leaders won’t be overly difficult. However, grinding in this game can be difficult without the presence of the speed button, so keep this in mind when you use a repel or skipping trainer battles.

One of my favorite attributes in a fan game is a lack of HMs, and I was pleasantly surprised that this game replaced HMs with key items. This opens up a fifth slot in your party; no HM slaves needed!

The gameplay in SLLD (Solar Light & Lunar Dark) is brought to life through its attention to detail in many areas. I’d say you can spend up to two hours in almost every town and its surrounding area, just doing quests, finding hidden items, and talking to NPCs without getting bored. There are so many places to explore, each with a completely different set of Pokemon.

My biggest grip in this area is the length of space between towns. The worst example of this is the journey between Waytide City and Coralite Town. In the space between them, there is Route 9, then Goopool Swamp, then Route 10A, then Rainbow Reef, then Route 10B, then finally Coralite Town. There is one single player to heal your Pokemon in this entire stretch, and if you don’t bring a ton of healing items and repels, there’s no way you’ll make it the whole way continuously. There’s also a ton of trainers on every route, too many in my opinion, and if you don’t battle them all, you’re destined to be underleveled for gym battles.

Score: 8.5/10

Art/Music:

The overworld art is well done, mostly in Gen 5 style. I haven’t seen art like this in another fan game yet, so props for that.

Original music can be found in about 80% of the game, and is generally well-composed. I rarely found myself listening to other music while playing the game. It’s very electronic, and comparable to Gen 5, but I actually like this soundtrack better than the Unova one. This brought me to wonder: why is such a common track, the wild battle music, from Sinnoh when almost all other music is original? This also goes for the Pokemon Center and a few other themes. My best guess is that composing those tracks would have taken a lot of time.

In terms of character art, most of it is solid. However, the female player character is obviously heavily inspired by Lyra from HGSS. The sprite isn’t bad per say, but it is very obvious. On the other hand, the male player character looks very original.

There are a few visual/sound errors that I would fix. First, the selection highlight isn’t apparent enough. This may seem minor, but this can be the difference between winning a battle or losing if you accidentally switch in the wrong Pokemon. Additionally, both the sound for stat rising and falling is the same- it always sounds like your stat is going up. There are also a couple of Pokemon missing their cries when sent into battle.

Score: 8.5/10

Misc:

The fan content for this game is pretty great. There’s a very active discord channel, and a pretty up-to-date, accurate wiki.

Overall:

One stand-out quality of this game is the sheer amount of content it contains. Before I mentioned the amount of Pokemon created, and this goes for the size of the map as well. There are more towns and areas of interest in this game than any individual region, and as a result you can get in a huge amount of playtime. I ended my run-through with almost 30 hours. However, the downside to inserting a massive amount of content into anything can make the issue of quality control. While the quality of most things in this game is above average, some things did suffer a bit. For example, there are so many routes and areas, it probably was impossible to compose music for all of them. As a result, the Surf and Bike theme are both the cheesy Pokemon Essentials themes.

On the topic of glitches: unfortunately, there are a handful of them. Most aren’t game breaking, but the one that stood out to me is the fishing contest one. When you are warped to the fishing contest, you’re trapped inside the building’s roof instead of in front of the building. As a result, you have to open your menu and quit the contest, automatically putting you in last place. Another is in the Subhail Icecaps towards the end of the game. The game can barely handle surfing in this area, and constantly stalls, almost crashing whenever you surf.

Overall, I would recommend this game to almost any Pokemon lover. I’d especially recommend this one for Unova lovers, as this game is a fresh new adventure quite reminiscent of that region. If you’re looking for a traditional Pokemon game with Fakemon in it, this game should be a winner for you.

The Shoe-Shop Exercise

The first draft of a writing exercise I did for class.

The Squeaky Shoe Store has seen better days. Its blemished window displays held discarded cardboard boxes, feral cats walked gleefully out of its adjoined alleyway, and the sign was smeared with dirt from old country storms.

 But Old Fella Creed wouldn’t give up on his shop. Old Fella Creed was a slender man, bulbous nose, and squinting eyes. Not many colors could he see now, besides the brown of shoe shiner and rusted gold shelves. He would carefully set the small foot stepper down and reach up to pick up shoes long forgotten. He blew on them with a loving father’s distant kiss, and use his elbow grease still found upon his graying white sleeve to freshen them up for sale.

 As he descended down, carrying the box of classic dancing shoes down, the old bell shimmied with aged spirit.

 His winkled gaze widened to see more of the person through the hazy blur of his eyes.

 The light was too strong, better just get into position.

 He moved himself as hurriedly as his little shuffling feet could go to the cashier desk, and politely took off his small hat to solute the customer.

 Finally, the woman came into view. A stout woman, with blazing white hair that looked muddled with blonde due to Old Fella Creed’s impaired vision. She wore pink with fuzzy fur entangled around her non-existent neck like a scarf. She politely nodded to him, and pointed down to her shoes.

 Old Fella Creed took a moment before leaning over the desk to peer down towards the floor at the young lady’s shoes.

 They were pigeon-sized, a heel cracked but not broken off but that didn’t stop her from quickly tapping her feet to regain stability again.

 When he glanced back at her, she let out a small, lady-like giggle and presented him with a shiny card.

 Money!

 Excitedly, the Old Fella Creed’s eyes remembered that sort of timely glow and could faintly see the green still shining. He held up a polite finger to have the good ma’dam wait as he hurried with his scraping soles against the wooden floor.

 His breathing carried down the isles as he flung back a tarp to make his way into the back storage room, and as though a child digging through new autumn leaves, he searched for the tiniest shoe box.

A thousand times had he tried to memorize each location of every available shoe-size his shop owned, but alas, he couldn’t seem to find the right stack. “Dah…oh.” He let a defeated expression of confusion and exhaustion break his usual optimism.

 He bounced a little as his arms animatedly showed his gentle disappointment at having not been able to find the smaller shoe sizes.

 Then, at the corner of his eye, he saw something sparkle a faint pink.

 Cloudy eyes then scanned as hands reached out to waddle through the upturned and tossed boxes to find that on one shelf, the numbers matched up.

 Eagerly, he let out minor huffs of excitement, pulling the box down and opening it wide.

 But it wasn’t shoes he found in this supposedly perfect box.

 He suddenly let out a forlorn sigh.

 It was full of leather and pieces of shoes, soles, and lace that had once been used to help repair charity shoes.

 He closed his watery eyes, lowering the box as he rubbed them. All the while, memories of his daughter helping him make shoes and repair them filled the room around him. In the back, the boxes disappeared to replace a young woman hammering some nails down on a shoe, holding the sole in place as she lifted it up to admire it, then show it off to him.

 He nodded and patted her back, kissing her forehead before the memory raced to children by his daughter’s feet. She was now rushing the patchy shoe job while Old Fella Creed seemed to be cautioning her about the quality of the shoe being ruined. Frustrated by her children’s playing and his worried comments, she gripped her head and shook it. As she stormed out, Old Fella Creed tried to follow her, pleading her to not take offense, but soon the children were gone, the business turned old and forgotten…

 The vision faded as the man looked up from the vision disappearing behind him and he moved back over to the now littered table with boxes.

 He lightly moved the boxes away, letting them fall to the ground and spill out a bit as he sat down and fell back into the chair, sighing.

 He then looked at a box that had the shoes fall out.

 He raised his bushy eyebrow, leaning down with some strain. He found he couldn’t reach, so he gripped the edge of the table and tried again.

 With some difficulty, he finally was able to swipe the air enough to lower himself close to the shoe and grab one of them. With again, great exertion, he placed one elbow on the table and willed himself back upright.

 “Whooo… Ah.” He relaxed from his undertaking and studied the shoe he had recovered, then pulled out the scraps from the box, looking away as an idea formed and his hands lightly pounded the objects in the air a moment.

 “Ah!” An idea sprung in his head. He moved out of the chair and reached for the drawer where his daughter’s tools were.

 He hesitated a moment, pulling away from them.

 His fingers recoiled before forcing themselves to latch onto the knob and tug.

 He tried to shift through the pictures of his daughter and him, her and her family, and cards that he could briefly still see in their flittering flutters as he swatted them away for the tools. ‘Sorry, Dad. I’m Busy.’, ‘Maybe Christmas break, me and the kids could…’, ‘I can’t do it anymore, John says…’.

 He froze to look at one card, a card so old the drool marks were barely visible anymore. ‘To Daddy, I love my new shoes! Love Jane.’. A toddler had drawn it and his eyes suddenly cleared to see the colors of the scribbled crayon in it.

 His lips pursed and he took it with him back to the table.

 He sat heavily down on the seat and let the little chair take the fullness of his weight.

 He then looked at the compiled items in his hand.

 Placing them down, he shakily took the picture and propped it upright. It fell a few times but he straightened it out.

 He pulled away to check it stability, and once he was assured it would stay upright, he began to hammer and shine the old pink leather and other shoe into an odd creation.

 It was the size she needed, but it certainly looked like a Frankenstein hybrid. Mix-matched with sparkles a child would normally wear and cowhide pattern, sowed white and thick stitching that created a rather ‘pop’ look, it wasn’t something the posh old lady would probably like.

 He moved to the tarp, practicing his presenting of the curious shoes to her, trying to bring his charisma back into his sell pitch.

 He finally took the courage to walk out, but slowed as he saw her looking around at the shop and seeming distracted by things outside.

 He lowered himself in humiliation, not having any alternative footwear for the woman but needing her money to stay afloat.

 If he could just sell it as a custom blend of a new era, a real dime-a-dozen!

 He put the box down and gestured for her to view it.

 She happily opened the box…

 Her expression was unreadable. She politely looked up to him and he rose his hat and began his pitch.

 He didn’t understand why she paid for them. Perhaps she was just being kind. Still, he gave a decent price, labor included, but worry filled him that night.

 The next morning, he opened shop as usual and tacked his daughter’s childhood drawing up by his customer desk.

 Proudly, he put his hands on his hips and admired it before jumping at the old bell tolling once more.

 He saw the woman was back, opening the door as the glare blurred her silhouette.

 He felt his whole being shrink below the desk, his nose sticking out at its edge to still see her.

 She was going to return them. He would truly lose his business. It was his only hope to find a shoe that fit her, and now…

 Then a faint shadow strode up behind the woman, just tall enough to reach her hip. Old Fella Creed rose himself up in surprise, watching the good ma’dam and the little misses point down.

 As before, he peered down from his desk, and smiled.

 The little one wore the fashioned shoes, and they looked stunning on her small little feet.

 As he looked up, his eyes cleared to see their smiling faces as well, as the woman then held up two fingers.

 Two more!?

 Old Fella Creed bounced behind the desk, his arms jumping just as much in their usual animated excitement.

 He held up a finger, saluted with his hat, and raced to the back.

 The woman held her granddaughter’s hand and squeezed it with eager enthusiasm, as the little girl excitedly danced at her side and pointed to look at the other shoes. The good ma’dam nodded and the little misses raced out of view through the isles of The Squeaky Shoes.

 The Squeaky Shoe Store has never seen better days. Time hurried along with the speed of productivity raised from the invention of the Frankenstein Shoe Line. Soon, the store could afford window-washing, then the line of displays that highlighted the unique style of the many patched together shoes. The alley cats had plenty of visitors that would willingly feed or take them home, so the area was now covered in flowers and more flower and patched quilt-style shoes. The sign was being lowered down when Jane and her family walked up to Old Fella Creed, raising his arms to tell the gentlemen to move it just a little more higher than before.

 When his now sparkling eyes saw the colors on his grandchildren’s school clothes and the beautiful face of his daughter, he placed his hands on his heart and opened his arms to them. He shuffled to them, immediately being embraced by his daughter embraced in a sweet, lasting hug.

 Her bag dipped slightly from her shoulder and her grip on his apron and graying white shirt tightened on his back.

 They all walked in together, as the sign now read, “The Squeaky Shoes Company”.

AX2001 - University - One second a week animation - My approach & 2D sections (Summer Project)

Since finishing my first year for the summer, we were set a summer assignment/ project to complete during out time off. One was to mix a character from one series and give them the art style/ design of another series. The other was to make a short, animated piece, where we had to create one second of animation each week, but each scenario was different to the last. In this post I will explain my thought process for the entire one second a week project and highlight the 2D sections of my piece.

How did I come up with each idea?

For the most part, each idea/ second of animation I created stemmed from something happening around me, or something that was going on around the time.

Some examples include big events happening during this summer period, such as the “Euros” and the “Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games”. Other ideas came from more strange scenarios, but were memorable enough for me to include, such as dreams and bizarre thoughts relating to something I was doing around the time (E.g. What if the world suddenly went black and white like an early 1930′s film).

As long as I was able to condense each idea down to a second, I would try to create each of them, within a week’s period, I understand, I could of spent longer on some of these, but I felt like I was cheating myself by not sticking to week long period (with the exception of one, but I will explain this in 3D sections post coming out in the future).

With this structure in mind, I began the project.

2D Sections Overview and development

Teeing Off (Golf/ Start)

This first animated piece was that of someone hitting a golf ball off a tee, like a standard game of golf. This idea came to me just I began the project as due to Covid-19 the local golf course and driving ranges had to close, but were able to re-open at the start of summer. In my mind I thought of this idea as two parts (More on the second part later), the animation with ball being hit and ending (the final second) with ball going in the hole.

When creating this piece, I tried to incorporate both drawn animation and Pegged animation with the golf club and person being drawn, and the ball being animated with Pegs. The tee itself had its position and rotation changed to ensure that it remained the same size throughout its cycle.

Whilst making this piece the two areas I felt I had the most difficulty in was with the person’s rotation and the arc of the golf club’s swing. After watching many clips from multiple sources of professional players, playing golf, I never really noticed any sort of bend or slack in the club, I had to try and animate the club in the same scale. The only issue with this is I felt like the club seemed a bit stiff throughout its cycle. If I were to try this again, I would try to include some sort of the stretch to emphasise more of the strength and speed of the club hitting the ball.

As for the person hitting ball, this issue came more down to drawing a fast turnaround, I initially only had two frames for the legs, being the player facing forward, and the player facing the side. Whilst viewing the clips for the golf club I also noted that a lot of players seem to swing so hard they sometimes end up on their toes, so when making the two frames and watching the footage back, the feet seemed to snap into place, causing it to look quite rough in execution. To fix this I added one more drawing of the feet mid turn, this improved the transition between feet positions but, when slowed down the difference between the feet becomes very noticeable.

One final lesson I learned from this piece was the speed of Pegging animation and drawn animation. I was reminded through trial and error, that pegged animation works in singles (1 frame at a time), whereas my drawn animation was made in twos. At this point I was running out of time, so I made the golf ball pattern move in singles so there is no delay between the ball and its pattern in its movement (other pegged animation such as the clouds were un-altered in these final stages).

The Foodture (Plane flying through doughnut)

This animated piece, featured an airplane flying through the centre of an enormous doughnut rotating in the sky. This idea came to me after inviting some friends over to my house, one of which brought a box of doughnuts. During this time, I had shoved a kabab stick through the centre ring and held it sideways, whilst staring at this, the TV in background had a city visible on it and that's where this idea was born.

In comparison to the previous 2D piece, I animated this piece entirely with Pegs, the plane, doughnuts, icing, sprinkles, and clouds where all animated with pegs. But this wasn’t all easy breezy, as this brought new issues of which I had to address and try and fix.

The most experimental aspect of the animation was the plane flying through the centre doughnut. At first, the plane would fly over/ on top of the doughnut layer making it appear that the doughnuts where in the background and not he fore ground. I tried to change around the order of the layers to achieve what I was aiming to do, but this either caused the plane to disappear or not become visible, due to hiding behind the doughnuts. To fix this, I placed the airplane layer above the doughnut layer and erased sections of the plane frame by frame to create the look of it flying through the centre of the doughnut.

As everything was animated with Pegs, the hardest thing for me to achieve this time, was the sprinkle’s rotating around the doughnut. To overcome this issue, I had to be careful as to where I placed the start and final key frames for the sprinkles movement. The re-occurring issue was that the sprinkles, float off the doughnut, or would overlap resulting in the sprinkles merging with things. After trying to fix this for a few days, I figured out a method of preventing this issue from happening, by not only adjusting the position of the sprinkles, but also the scale/ size of them seemed to reduce this issue. So, at the start of the animation the sprinkles at their usual size, but by the end the size of them have increased slightly. By tweaking this bit by bit I was able to keep the sprinkles from leaving the doughnut and thus it was finished. I then included to more doughnuts above and below the original with the same method for their sprinkles and for the most part, this method (at least to me) appeared to work again each time.

After all the tweaks were made cotton candy clouds, an ice cream Sunday skyscraper and hill made of cake were added to emphasise the food theme of the piece.

High Five! (Live action and animation)

This animated piece was probably my most experimental piece out of everything included in this project. This idea came to me after the masses of advertisements made of the Warner Brothers animated film “Space Jam A New Legacy”. Advertising for this film for a time was everywhere, that it got to the point of me wondering, would such a piece be possible? I do not own a green screen, or a tripod so it defiantly would not be professional, but as a prototype, could this concept work? So, I decided to give it a try.

The first thing I did when creating this piece was not animating but planning. Within the the first frame I made a rough plane as to where everything would need to be, such as borders for how both me and the animated character could move in frame and where the contact needs to be made. After a few attempts of planning, I began animating my character.

For this piece, I did not want to create a character to complex as I did not want to overly complicate the making process. So, I made my character with a head body and only the top half of his legs. The reason for only having the top half of his legs was, I wanted him to be roughly in frame and at the same height as me, but this also allowed me to position the character without him exiting off screen, this made things a lot easier to judge/ adjust after the live action segment was filmed.

Now I understand this post is about animation, so I won’t dwell too much on the live action section. All I’ll say is it took 17 attempts to get the best shot you see in the final piece and the camera used was with the same camera I used for stop-motion work/ sections. This segment was not done picture by picture with the camera and was recorded.

After all this, the hardest part of this animation was creating the contact between our hands. The animated character used his arm further away from the camera, as I wanted to add facial expressions as he twists for the high five, whereas if he was the other way, you would only see the back of his head. So, I had to use my hand closest to the camera, the issue was my hand would have to cover his hand. At first, I tried using “Adobe Photoshop” and “Adobe After effects” to blur out the hand making it more convincing, but the only results I got from this was a smudge on the frame which didn't look good.

With time running out the best I could do was place the original animation in “Adobe Premier Pro” overlay it onto the live action section then make notes as to which frame numbers included the impact, open the original animation “Toon Boom” and erase sections of the hand frame by frame. Overall, this animation isn’t the best in line up of the other pieces I made, but I left it in as I felt it showed experimentation with something I had little knowledge on prior and that I was willing to try something new.

The Colour Switch (Black and White to Colour)

This piece takes place in an office building within a city, everything is drawn with black lines, but everything else is white, someone presses a red button what says colour, turning the colour back, revealing he isn’t wearing cloths. As mentioned in briefly in “How did I come up with each idea?” section, this idea came from the thought of what if everything was black and white. But more specifically this idea came to me as I was creating my first character for the character mash-up section of the project (more on that in a future post).

With this animated piece I want to create a characterised piece, as so far most of my other animated pieces were straight to the point or did not really involve too much interaction (I guess with the exception of “High Five!”). I began by drawing the office and the main character, I originally planned for the main character to face forward and turn to the button, but I felt this would take longer than a one second and not include the punch line of the piece. The process of creating this piece was a bit simpler than the others, as I animated everything in two’s and once the main character presses the button, I then added colour to the piece once the animation was done.

With the lessons learned from “Teeing Off” I used any Peg animations for minor aspects of the animation, so it did not appear too rough in comparison to everything else on screen. So a background car, the first half of the man with his coffee walking and the coffee the man spits out, where made using Pegs. Little things such as both characters having a reaction to the man pressing the button, I thought helped give a sense of comedy and character within the piece, even if you don’t quite catch it first time around.

Oddly enough, the hardest part of this piece was making sure I didn’t have too much going on, a lesson I had learned from the “Medals” piece. So, I had to resist the urge to have people walking outside or birds. From a making point of view, I found it a little difficult at first to judge how far the man who spits out his coffee should bend down, as I felt that it seemed like his body was collapsing in on himself sometimes, but felt like I did an OK job for the final piece.

Angry Planets (The Sun & Moon)

This animated piece features and mischievous Sun, who is running away from an angry Moon, around the surface of the Earth. This idea came to me in a dream I had where I looked up at the sky and saw the sun and moon rotate around the earth so fast that night and day happened every two seconds. This dream was so bizarre that I decided to make this piece but try to characterise the two planets.

The main aspect I wanted to focus on this time around was the planets walk/ run cycle and how to adapt it to a none flat surface. To begin with I created the Earth and made the Sun and Moon on each side of it, I then gave both the Sun and Moon facial features. I wanted to try and make the sun look young and cheery and make the moon old and cranky. To achieve this look I gave the moon grey bushy eyebrows and a grey moustache to show maturity for the moon, whereas the Sun lacks these features, but has a goofy smile on his face representing someone jolly and silly/ mischievous.

I referred to my past work as a guide for how to make the walk/ run cycle, I tried to exaggerate some frames of legs bending and springing upwards to emphasise that these planets were running. For the Sun tried to give his arms fast wide arcs to give off a running effect, whereas for the Moon his arms slightly bounce up and down with each footstep he takes.

The hardest part of this project was pulling off the running effect on a none flat surface. I had created the two planets’ animations upright and next to the planet, but when creating their orbiting run cycle, pieces of each character would sometimes fly off and not follow the character. To fix this issue, I would go through each of their loops roughly four to five times for each moving feature (E.g. Their eyes, Mouths, the Moons moustache, the suns triangles, etc.) to make sure nothing popped off. Once everything was fixed, I then reviewed the animation back to make sure the two were running around in a clear circle. At first, I had them clipping into the Earth a little too much, but after a bit more tweaking in double checking everything was in place, I felt I had managed to achieve this effect.

Medals (The Olympic Games)

This piece features three athletes winning their bronze, silver, and gold medals with a backdrop of Tokyo in the background. This idea came from the “Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games”, which took place over this summer and although I had already featured two sports already being Golf and Football, I wanted to focus on a different moment from the games being the award ceremony.

As previously mentioned, my main focus was the award ceremony, but after realising how quickly I was able to animate this piece, most of my time came from Japanese landmarks and culture. To start the animation was of each athlete holding up their medals to celebrate their victories, these were created in singles, although each athlete raises their medals at slightly different times, their animation cycles are not 25 frames long but 12 frames long. Other animated aspects of this piece include clouds and a blimp with the Olympic rings on it, which animated using pegs.

The most time-consuming feature of this piece was creating the background, this was kind of my own undoing, but I really wanted to add as many features and land marks as possible in this piece. These include a shop advertising Sushi, a Pagoda tower on top of a small hill, Tokyo Tower in the distance, the “Shibuya Crossing” and shop with a Tanuki wearing a hat (The writing below both the Tanuki Shop and Sushi Shop say “Tanuki House” and Sushi” in Japanese, if I wrote/ drew it correctly (I don’t really know Japanese, so this was like a small lesson of sorts)).

Although quite simple from an animation perspective, Id say this piece was quite a fun one to do, especially around the time when the Olympics were on and I can safely say I’ve learned a thing or two outside of animation on this occasion.

It turns out that this is due to a sloppy implementation – or rather, education – of a feature newly added to this release: The Kiwami Heat action.

Basically, during the course of a boss battle, you build up your Heat Climax meter, and when the boss gets winded, they’ll glow with a colored aura that corresponds with one of your fighting styles as they regenerate health. When you’re in that style, you can perform an extra-special damaging move that halts the process and makes the battle a lot easier.

Unfortunately, without getting into too much detail, they decide to introduce this concept before effectively stripping you of it without really telling you. Getting it back is simply a matter of applying experience points to the appropriate leveling-up chart, but you’re not informed of this in any way, thus leading to some confusion (and YouTube videos explaining what to do) I’ve witnessed around online.

Oh, and on the note of leveling up: Since making fat stacks of cash was more of an 80’s theme in the original, it doesn’t play into “buying” moves and levels as it did in Yakuza 0, and enemies don’t have cash flying when beaten. Instead, leveling up is done in an altogether more traditional fashion. It’s understandable, but slightly disappointing after the thrill of mad money flying everywhere.

Speaking of difficulty, another new feature in Yakuza Kiwami is the “Majima Everywhere.” Early on in the game, you meet up with Yakuza 0’s other playable character, Goro Majima, and he pretty much wipes the floor with you, setting up the idea of him attacking you at random to help restore the Dragon of Dojima to his former glory. I was worried that these battles would prove cumbersome to deal with, but relieved to find out that would not be the case.

Instead, Majima Everywhere is a true highlight of the game – you really can’t be sure where he’ll come from, and he goes to some crazily absurd lengths to draw the attention of “Kiryu-chan.” There came one point where his attacks became relentless and were actively preventing me from progressing in the story, but he soon backed off and allowed me some time to do what I needed to do. That brief period aside, Majima is a delight to encounter, save for the occasions you simply run into him while roaming, as he sadly has only one script for every such encounter. Those are still fun, mind, but feels like they’d have been better had Majima been given more to say.

Sadly, one disappointing thing about Majima is that he doesn’t really feel much like the same character we met and played as in Yakuza 0. Maybe there’s room for a “Yakuza 0.5” to tell the rest of his story?

The Kamurocho area feels much like Yakuza 0 as well, but with some 17 years of change applied to it, allowing the map to feel both familiar yet fresh at the same time. Of course, without Sōtenbori to run around in as well, the play area of the game is only about half the size of its prequel. Even so, some different things have been done to freshen things up, such as the locker keys and game cards which now litter the streets, replacing the phone cards from before.

Incidentally, another carryover from Yakuza 0 is that when you come across someone being victimized, it seems the goons and Kazuma’s dialogue is lifted straight from that game.

In terms of story, Yakuza Kiwami comes from a kind of weird place, as it remakes a game that did not have a predecessor behind it. As such, you don’t really have to have played Yakuza 0 to follow along in Kiwami. It’s beneficial, to be sure, as there are indeed various references dropped throughout, and even an entire side-story which calls back to the prequel, but for the most part, you’re given all the context you need to follow along with what’s happening in the here and now without having played the first one.

Even so, I really do recommend playing Yakuza 0 first. For one reason, it’s just a great game, but for another, it will help to enlighten you to some of the main characters, their relationships, and their hardships in this game. In fact, in some ways, Yakuza Kiwami on its own feels less like Kazuma’s story than it does his friend Akira Nishikiyama, which unfolds throughout the course of the game. But playing Yakuza 0 beforehand helps reinforce the bond the two have, helping make Kiryu’s tie to everything feel that much stronger.

Beyond that, a word of warning worth heeding is that the story can be fairly confusing at first, presenting the player with a number of flashbacks (and I think even some flashbacks within flashbacks) that can be a little much to take in. Fortunately, it’s not long before things straighten out a bit and everything makes more sense as it runs smoothly, so I encourage you to stick with it if you’re trying to get a grasp on things and it feels like a bit much.

Yakuza Kiwami is a bit of an odd one, a game that feels as much like a sequel as it is a remake, which makes sense as it is both. In some ways, one could also say it feels like a sort of second episode or expansion to Yakuza 0, as it’s a shorter game that focuses on half the main characters and settings of that title. As a remake of a game that’s 12 years old and had plenty of time to see numerous refinements and growth, there is only so much one can be expected to do to bring it up to modern standards.

Still, just as I loved Yakuza 0, I love Yakuza Kiwami. It has its quirks and foibles, sure, and I might even like its recent prequel just a little more, but damn if I didn’t enjoy every moment I played (and will continue playing, as there are still plenty of sidequests left to handle). I can’t say the game is without faults, but none of them were ever enough to bring me down in the face of all the goodness it has to offer.

Yakuza 0 set a new standard for the series as the best place to start, but if the lower-price is more of a draw, then you’ll of course still do well by jumping in with Yakuza Kiwami. And if you’ve already played Yakuza 0, then this soft reboot is a great way to keep the good times rolling.

The show’s combination of thoughtful character drama, thrilling performance sequences, and goofy comedy made it a deserved breakout hit. Will there be more? Maybe, but it won’t be for a long time yet. So what can all of us do to occupy ourselves in the meantime? Watch more anime, of course!

If you like Shinichiro Watanabe’s style of episodic adventures (Champloo, Cowboy Bebop), but feel they could probably use a badass heroine topping the bill, it’s very worth a look. Yamamoto herself has described this one as a show she hoped women could come home to after a day of work, cracking a beer and enjoying the show.

  2) The Woman Called Fujiko Mine

Four years after directing Michiko & Hatchin, Yamamoto returned with The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. Though this show takes place in the general Lupin III, master thief universe, it’s both relatively self-contained and very unique in its focus. As the title says, this show turns its eye to Lupin’s eternal femme fatale Fujiko, who is given her own rich story in Yamamoto’s capable hands. Couple that with the show’s gorgeous art design, and you’ve got another series that’s definitely worth checking out.

Before I move on from Yamamoto, I should mention that her highlights aren’t just limited to the full series she’s directed. Yamamoto preceded Yuri!!! On ICE with the clear stylistic predecessor Endless Night, a beautiful skating-focused short from the Animator Expo program. She’s also renowned for her work on show ending songs, having directed the endings for shows like Attack on Titan, Space Dandy, and Rage of Bahamut: Genesis. Yuri!!! On ICE’s tight schedule and breakneck pacing didn’t even necessarily allow all of Yamamoto’s strengths to shine, so I’d definitely give her other work a chance.

    But of course, shows are more than just their creators. While Yamamoto has directed some very exciting productions, if you’re looking for something that feels like Yuri!!! On ICE, you might have to look elsewhere. The thrill of competition, the camaraderie of a broad cast, the fundamental optimism of pushing beyond yourself to succeed—all of those things are fundamental to sports dramas like Yuri!!! On ICE. And fortunately, Yuri!!! On ICE actually hits us during something of a sports anime renaissance, where we have a wide variety of recent sports hits to choose from. As far as those go, check out the next recommendations (in no particular order).

  3) Haikyuu!!

Starting off our sports roundup, Haikyuu!! offers a satisfying and reasonably grounded take on high school volleyball. Featuring some terrific animation and a wide, likeable cast, it just recently finished up its third season. It’s light, fun, and brimming with energy. Even if Yuri!!! On ICE made you fall in love with figure skating, you might want to leave a little time in your schedule for volleyball after this one.

  4) Cross Game

Cross Game sadly isn’t available streaming, but is still widely in manga form. As a personal fan, I had to include this one in my list - a story about grief, family, and the competitions that bring us together, it’s one of my absolute favorite manga. Focusing on a pitching prodigy and the team that rises around him, Cross Game offers a more sensitive and character-focused approach to sports stories, following its cast as they grow from children into young adults.

5) Kuroko’s Basketball

At the more sports-as-superpowers end of the genre, there’s the intense and often beautifully directed Kuroko’s Basketball. There are no overt romantic relationships in this one, but Kuroko’s Basketball is still deeply invested in the internal worlds of its characters, and the relationships that form between them. Plus, who doesn’t like shows about characters with basketball teleportation magic?

  6) Ping Pong the Animation

Finally, the tremendous Ping Pong the Animation brings a unique visual sensibility and terrific character writing together to offer one of the strongest shows in any genre. Starring a dynamic cast of young talents, it both celebrates what makes them unique and also examines the fundamental nature of competition. Every competitor has their own style and reasons for playing, and Ping Pong brings all of its heroes to life.

7) Free!

I’d frankly be negligent in my duties if I moved on from sports shows without mentioning Free! Free! is actually a less dedicated sports drama than those picks above, and more of a slice of life/drama blend, but it’s still funny and beautifully animated and full of cute boys. Definitely worth a look if you’re seeking something a little lighter.

Of course, Yuri!!! On ICE wasn’t just a thrilling sports show - it was also a mature and satisfying romance, a queer drama with a very thoughtful approach to its cast. If you’re looking for more shows like that, I’ve got a few picks that are just the thing!

8) Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Focusing on a few artists practicing Japanese theater across the twentieth century, Rakugo presents a striking story of passion, legacy, and awakening to your own sexuality. Performers find identity and redemption on the stage, all while weathering a Shakespearian hurricane of tragedy and personal sacrifice. It’s sensitively written and beautifully directed, and its second season is airing right now.

9) Wandering Son

Wandering Son tends to show up on any list of LGBT-focused anime, and for good reason. The show is a beautifully intimate story of two adolescents coming to terms with their gender identities. Featuring another great ensemble cast and a warm, almost watercolor-styled visual aesthetic, it’s a sensitive and often heartwarming production. Wandering Son embraces the complexity and validity of our sometimes contradictory feelings, celebrating the value of every member of its charming cast.

  10) Yurikuma Arashi

If you know Kunihiko Ikuhara, this one’s probably not surprising - he directed the standout adolescent drama Revolutionary Girl Utena, and all of his works are rich in visual metaphor and social commentary. His latest show is actually his most direct, though that doesn’t make it any less exciting. Yurikuma Arashi tackles the realities of same-sex oppression, portraying not just the difficulty of being yourself in a hostile society, but also the various ways we all become servants of such systems. And it does this all through the wonderful framing device of... predatory lesbian bears.
