Plant of the Day
Saturday 3 June 2023
Growing in a tropical glasshouse this Heliconia rostrata (false bird of paradise, hanging lobster claw) was putting on a show. This large, evergreen perennial has leaves up to 2m long and produces hanging inflorescences made up of bright red bracts, each tipped with yellow and green, with small yellowish-white flowers which in the Americas are pollinated by humming birds.

Wings of Fire designs #7, Heliconia.
And we're going straight into obscurity now.
The only description given about her appearance is that she's "an ugly shade of pink", and I wasn't quite sure what that meant considering it came from Winter. He doesn't strike me as the type to like the color pink (0/10 character immediately awful cancel Winter asap as possible), so I just kinda tried to make her a little odd-looking. I also threw in some green due to her namesake.
Characters being designed to look more similar to their namesake will become a common theme amongst this series. I have several "first draft" designs (all the designs I'm posting are second or even third drafts, which is what takes me so long with them), the majority of them are influenced by their namesake to varying degrees. Consider it a personal taste of mine.

Heliconia rostrata
The name's Heliconia rostrata. I read it came from south America, then emigrated in many tropical places, including the Philippines Islands.
It's quite large, and so brightly colored one can think it's made from plastic.
It's a generous plant, storing both water and nectar for birds and insects.
I waited for hummingbirds to come but they never shown.
