okay guys i had to rant about what i’m watching and i’ll be making relationship headcanons sometime tonight, but for right now i just had to do this
eric is an angry and manipulative person. his manipulation is usually to keep people around him and believing him because he cannot stand the thought to be alone whatsoever. his anger is something he never learned how to deal with, especially since his mother just did anything to quiet him down and gave him what he wanted when he was younger.
as the seasons go on, liane starts to shift the way she parents cartman and now he’s being given some stricter rules and sometimes he actually follows them, depending on how he feels and if he wants to get revenge later or not. this is something he will be struggling with throughout the years, if he ever learns that what he is doing is wrong. when someone thinks of themselves as the victim for so long, they will think they’re always right and are being ganged up on. this is something kyle said about cartman to heidi but this is also something i have observed from someone in my own life who has obedient defiant disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and a cortisol addiction (which means they are addicted to the hormone released when in a stressful situation)
out of all of that, however, eric is just obedient defiant. he does not go so far that he has narcissistic personality disorder, but he does have moments of narcissism. he’ll think himself to be better than he is, but that comes from his mother telling him that he is perfect for so long and also is used as a defense mechanism, because we need to remember, he will make himself out to be the victim.
when it comes to relationships with him, things get really twisted. with heidi, it started out as a lifeline. they both felt disconnected from the world and clung to each other because they were giving and receiving positive attention. he actually believed he really liked heidi, and to an extent he probably did. she was the apple of his eye because she was there when others weren’t and he depended on her attention. eric changed himself to be the person that heidi needed because she was paying attention to that and honestly loving him for the person he was. i would say “person he was pretending to be” but i think he honestly was trying to be that so he could be happy by making her happy from which she would do everything she could to make him happy. it was all because he was getting something really nice out of it, and in return she was getting what she thought she needed. but then butters came along and instilled this fear that she is capable of leaving and using him and things went downhill, though even if butters didn’t say anything he would have come to this conclusion some other way anyway. it was inevitable for cartman to realize something like this because reality likes to intervene all the time.
but once he realizes that heidi can leave him, he starts to act hostile towards her. he doesn’t want to be manipulated, he doesn’t want to be taken for granted, but he also can’t stand the thought of being without her. she is still this lifeline he had and has and if she leaves, it’s a relationship that he will be without and he can’t stand being alone in that regard. because to some extent he knows how much people can hate him, something he fights all the time and acts the victim over, and if she takes her love away from him, then he’s alone. i really do think that if he didn’t delude himself so much that people like him or need him when they really don’t, he would have tried killing himself if she seriously left him. but he acts hostile towards heidi because he doesn’t want to be fooled while at the same time clinging to her and relentlessly attacking her with pleas and crying whenever she leaves him. she is something he thinks he needs but he also thinks of her to be a ball and chain.
which is why that he would prefer to see her die than to be anywhere else. when he is with her, he is miserable because he makes himself miserable by seeing everything that irritates him instead of everything he used to love. heidi did not change but eric did in the way he viewed her. it’s how some marriages can tank after a short time. his honeymoon period was over. but even though he starts to hate her, he cannot bare the thought of her being with someone else. so better off dead than not with him.
and then we get eric physically manipulating and changing heidi. he is so set on making her what he wants that he will go out of his way to demean her, change her diet without her knowing, and just shit on everything she once was. he wants someone he can agree with because it will make him happy, but he also wants someone who will not fight him and will cling to him because she thinks the rest of the world hates her or sees her poorly, of which cartman has a major part by making her gain weight and then dumping on her weight gain very publicly. in this way, she starts to become not subservient to him but believes that he is the only one who will love her for who she is no matter how she changes, even though he’s the one changing her. she is turning into someone that eric can use and have by his side and will not leave. he has done so much to her and forced her self esteem to take such a brutal beating that she is nowhere near the same person she was, heidi even changing her personality to fit eric’s to be more compatible and for him to “appreciate” her more. it’s a very toxic relationship that is not heidi’s fault because eric is such an unrelenting manipulative asshole. this all could have possibly been avoided if eric was open about his insecurities, willing to talk, and open to even the thought of change for the better. but, of course, that takes him not believing himself to be the victim.
and that will take years of self realization, awareness, and therapy.
