Plot vs. Story: Why the Difference Matters
Tumblr media
Is there a difference between plot and story? NaNo participant Hedi Mohammed walks us through this question and talks about how knowing the difference can help you in your writing.
You may be wondering why this is a question at all. While it might not be an obvious problem, many writers tend to mash together the words “plot” and “story” and use them interchangeably. How accurate is that assumption?
It turns out that there is a notable difference between them, and knowing it gives you an edge over plot bunnies, characters acting out, and all kinds of other problems!
What is a Plot?
A plot is a collection of events that happen in a certain order in a story. More importantly, plot is what your characters respond to; it’s the combination of this action and reaction that moves a story forward. Therefore, the plot is considered a building block rather than the whole.
What is a Story?
On the other hand, a story is more than the sum of its parts; it includes the plot events, characters, worldbuilding, themes, and wording of your book. All of these different building blocks come together to form a complete, well-written recount of the story you want to tell.
Why is Knowing the Difference Important?
As you can imagine, trying to force the idea of plot, a building block, being equal to the entire story is a recipe for disaster.
By equating the plot to the whole story, you might find yourself focusing primarily on what happens in the world of your characters. This can make you accidentally compromise on other equally important parts of your story, like better characterization, without you realizing it.
Remember that plot events mean nothing without the reactions of the characters to them. There are many sides to a good story; events can be seen as heartfelt, cold, or scary depending on how characters react and how you set the scene.
How It Helps You Improve Your Writing
Simply knowing the difference between plot and story can clear up a few of the issues that writer’s block can stem from, like not knowing which direction your story is taking. Additionally, you can:
Prioritize different parts of your story. By moving away from the plot every now and then, you start to notice other areas that may need more work.
Improve the characterization of your characters. With the relationship between plot and characters in mind, you can develop your protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) alongside the events that affect them.
Explore more creative ways to make use of your worldbuilding/themes. Develop your mood in less common ways, or take advantage of simple sentences to make punchy statements.
Stay motivated and power through writer’s block. If you consider writer’s block a mystery to be solved, then you just made a breakthrough!
Here you go, a tidbit of information for your writing needs! While the misunderstanding may seem small, resolving it can have an incredible effect on your writing process.
Hedi Mohammed is an up-and-coming content writer and editor of MIST: After the Apocalypse, an Egyptian bestselling novel. Now that they have much more time to dedicate to writing, be on the lookout for fiction and poetry books of their own coming soon! Photo by Alina Vilchenko

El Hedi Ben Salem M’barek Mohammed Mustafa, star of “Fear Eats the Soul: Ali,” and among the more tragic figures swept up in and discarded by Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s creative clique, is afforded a postmortem appreciation of sorts in “My Name Is Not Ali.” Yet the subject remains a frustrating enigma in Viola Shafik’s documentary, which interviews former co-workers and North African relatives in an attempt to shed light on a figure it seems few got — or bothered — to know well.

Promoting SWANA and Arab Independent Cinema: Shasha Movies and Aflamuna
In the last two years new initiatives have emerged to showcase South-West Asian and North African (SWANA) Cinema internationally such as streaming platforms Shasha Movies and Aflamuna.
Tumblr media
Shasha Movies is an independent streaming service for SWANA Cinema. It is one of the projects led by Assyrian Iraqi-Irish film curator and programmer Róisín Tapponi, founder of the Habibi Collective platform. Shasha Movies offers carefully curated programmes every two months showcasing the works of independent filmmakers of the SWANA region. Those programmes are eclectic and amongst the films you can currently watch on the platform is the 2011 documentary My Name is not Ali by Viola Shafik. Through the use of archive material and interviews, Shafik’s uncovers the story behind German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder anti-racist film Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. This 1973 movie by Fassbinder was groundbreaking in exposing West German post-war racism. In her documentary, My Name is not Ali, the director focuses on El Hedi ben Salem who starred as the lead role in the movie and was also Fassbinder’s lover at the time. By telling Ben Salem’s story, Shafik shows the insensibility and orientalist ways of Fassbinder and his crew towards the actor. Yet, Shasha Movies does not only feature documentary or film archives but also contemporary works of fiction. You can currently watch on demand Memory Box, a 2022 drama directed by Lebanese duo Hadjithomas & Joreige, for an additional £4.99. Unfortunately this offer is only available in the UK.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aflamuna (أفلامنا) means “Our Films'' in Arabic. It is also the name of a nonprofit streaming platform made by Beirut DC, an organisation that was founded over 20 years ago and is now an internationally established organisation empowering filmmakers from every corner of the Arab world. Its streaming platform Aflamuna was launched 2 years ago with the aim of honouring Arab Cinema by increasing access to the best productions of Independent Arab Cinema. Every month, viewers have access for free to a new programme of films made by Arab Independent filmmakers. The films are hand-picked by a different curator every month, and include both fiction and documentary.  Currently showing are a series of 15 films that were funded by the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) in the last 15 years, to celebrate AFAC’s 15 years anniversary. The curator of this selection, Mohamed Soueid, says he has chosen films that were less noticed when they first came out and that he deems worthy of attention by the general public. Amongst this selection you can find Waves’ 98, a short animated movie directed by Ely Dagher, a film focusing on late 1990s youth in Beirut. Ely Dagher’s film was awarded the Short Film Palme d’Or at 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Waves’ 98 is available to stream until this Wednesday 11 p.m.. Available next week is a 2016 documentary Tadmor, sharing the testimonies of a group of former Lebanese detainees about their time spent in one of Assad regime’s most dreadful prisons: Tadmor (Palmyra). Partners of the Aflamuna project include institutions such as the AFAC but also foundations such as the Sundance Institute or the Eye Film Museum in the Netherlands.
Tumblr media
Aflamuna and Shasha movies are platforms that allow viewers across the world that might not be familiar with the Arab and SWANA region film scene to discover the diversity of its independent cinema made by both emerging and classical filmmakers. It gives filmmakers of the region the opportunity to have their work seen around the world. Those platforms are also spaces for interrogating social, political, or cultural developments in the region through the lens of program curators.
You can watch Aflamuna programs for free on the platform website.
A subscription to Shasha movies is £9.99 monthly or £99.99 for the yearly subscription.

Fawzia Fuad of Egypt (1921-2013).
Egyptian royal.
.
Princess Fawzia was the daughter of Fuad I, the seventh son of Ismail the Magnificent. She descended from the Muhammad Ali Dynasty.
.
In 1939, she married Iran’s Crown Prince Mohamed Reza Pahlavi. They saw each other only once before marriage, and it seems it was a political and religious union rather than a love match. The marriage was planned by the latter's father, Rezā Shāh. A declassified CIA report in May 1972 described the union as a political move. The marriage was also significant in that it united a Sunni royal, the Princess, and a Shia royal, the Crown Prince.
.
Her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law were jealous of her and Mohammed Reza was unfaithful. The marriage was short-lived, life in Teheran was very different than the one she led in the palace of her parents and following depressive episodes and anorexia crisis, Fawzia moved back to Cairo in 1945, leaving her daughter in Iran.
.
She remarried in 1949 with Colonel Ismail Chirine, and this time, the marriage would last until the end of their lives. Sources mention that it was a true love story and Fawzia found her balance and fulfilment in this union. She had two daughters with him.
She had two children with him.
.
After the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, her royal titles were no longer recognized by the Egyptian government.
.
Princess Fawzia was educated in Switzerland and was fluent in English and French in addition to her native Arabic.
.
Fawzia was considered a beauty of her time. Her beauty was often compared to that of film stars Hedy Lamarr and Vivien Leigh. Fawzia as a young woman was as a "supremely naive, over-protected, cellophane-wrapped gift packaged little girl" who lived in "bucolic surroundings, mobbed by adoring servants, aunts, and ladies in waiting".
.
In 1942, Fawzia appeared on the cover of the magazine Life. Photographer Cecil Beaton, described her as an "Asian Venus" with "a perfect heart-shaped face and strangely pale but piercing blue eyes."
She led the newly founded Association for the Protection of Pregnant Women and Children (APPWC) in Iran.

Plastic Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery
Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery refers to a variety of operations performed in order to repair or restore body parts to look normal, or to change a body part to look better. These types of surgery are highly specialized and performed by surgeons trained to precise cutting and suturing techniques, and by care taken to minimize scarring. Recent advances in the development of miniaturized instruments, new materials for artificial limbs and body parts, and improved surgical techniques have expanded the range of plastic surgery procedures that can be performed.
Although these three types of surgery share some common techniques and approaches, they have somewhat different emphases. Plastic surgery is usually performed to treat birth defects and to remove skin blemishes such as warts, acne scars, or birthmarks. Cosmetic surgery procedures are performed to make persons look younger or enhance their appearance in other ways. Reconstructive surgery is used to reattach body parts severed in combat or accidents, to perform skin grafts after severe burns, or to reconstruct parts of person’s body that were missing at birth or removed by surgery.
Most cosmetic surgery is done on the face. It is intended either to correct disfigurement or to enhance a person’s features. The most common cosmetic procedure for children is correction of a cleft lip or palate. In adults, the reshaping of the nose (rhinoplasty), removing of excess skin around the eyes (blepharoplasty), face lifts (rhytidectomy), reshaping and adjusting the size of the breast (mammoplasty). In our modern time where more emphasis is put on our looks it become more acceptable for men to request facelifts and eyelid surgery, hair transplants and tummy tucks. Reconstructive surgery is often performed on burn and accident victims. It may involve the rebuilding of severely fractured bones and skin grafting, the reattachment of an amputated finger or toe, or implanting a prosthesis. How to proceed? After a meticulous research is done and making sure the surgeon has the right qualifications a first consultative meeting will be arranged. If everything was well explained and understood at the end of the visit or at a next visit (never rush to a conclusion unless you feel complete confident in the procedure and the surgeon) and as soon the appointment for surgery has been scheduled, the count down starts, not only for you, but also for the surgeon who has just made an agreement with you. The quality of the final result will depend on your mutual agreement. You must not undergo this operation passively. Your part is the most essential. You should establish a new mode of behavior, as does the surgeon, so that on the day of the surgery, all should be at the best of their forms, since the success of the operation is resulting from the fruitful work performed by a team, and you are the center of this team. Preparation for plastic surgery includes the surgeon’s detailed assessment. A physical examination followed by blood and urine tests, and other tests to make sure that they do not have any previously undetected health problems or blood clotting disorders. The skin has to be well prepared. Dietetic guidelines have to be followed as accurately as possible. Do not take any aspirin 7 days before and 8 days after the surgery. Plastic, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgeries have an important psychological dimension because of the high value placed on outward appearance in Western society. Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgical procedures are performed by surgeons with specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Depending on the complexity of the procedures, they may be performed in hospitals as an inpatient, in outpatient facilities, or in private professional offices.

Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid (Somali: Imaan Maxamed Cabdimajiid, Arabic: ايمان محمد عبد المجيد‎; born 25 July 1955), professionally known as Iman ("faith" in Arabic), is a Somali-American fashion model, actress and entrepreneur. A pioneer in the field of ethnic cosmetics, she is also noted for her charitable work. She is married to David Bowie.
Early life and education
Iman was born in Mogadishu, Trust Territory of Somaliland. She is the daughter of Marian and Mohamed Abdulmajid. Her father was a diplomat and a former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and her mother was a gynecologist. She has four siblings: two brothers, Elias and Feisal, and two younger sisters, Idil and Nadia.
For her education, Iman attended high school in Egypt and later lived in Kenya, where she studied political science at the University of Nairobi.
Iman is Muslim, and fluent in five languages: Somali, Arabic, Italian, French and English.
Career
Modeling
While still at university, Iman was discovered by American photographer Peter Beard, and subsequently moved to the United States to begin a modeling career. Her first modeling assignment was for Vogue a year later in 1976. She soon landed some of the most prestigious magazine covers, establishing herself as a supermodel.
With her long neck, tall stature, slender figure, fine features, copper-toned skin, and exotic accent, Iman was an instant success in the fashion world, though she herself insists that her looks are merely or typically Somali. She became a muse for many prominent designers, including Halston, Gianni Versace, Calvin Klein, Issey Miyake and Donna Karan. A favorite of Yves Saint-Laurent, he once described her as his "dream woman".
During her 14 years as a high fashion model, Iman also worked with many notable photographers, including Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz.
Iman credits the nurturing she received from various designers with having given her the confidence to succeed in an era when individuality was valued and model-muses were often an integral part of the creative process.
She is signed to TESS Management in London.
BusinessIman Cosmetics
After almost two decades of modeling, Iman started her own cosmetics firm in 1994, focusing on difficult-to-find shades for women. Based on her years of experience mixing her own formulations for make-up artists to use on her, she had a personal hand in the final product and also acted as the commercial face of the company.
As of 2010, Iman Cosmetics is a $25-million-a-year business. It is centered on $14.99 foundations in 4 formulations and 14 shades, and is among the top-selling foundation brands on Walgreens' website.
In spring 2012, Iman signed fellow Somali designers Ayaan and Idyl Mohallim, founders of the Mataano fashion company, as brand ambassadors for her cosmetics line.
Global Chic
Due to her marketability and high profile, Iman was approached in 2007 by the CEO of the Home Shopping Network (HSN) to create a clothing design line. Inspired by her childhood in Egypt and modeling time with Halston, Iman's first collection introduced embroidered, one-size-fits-all caftans. Today, her Global Chic collection is one of four best-selling items among more than 200 fashion and jewelry brands on HSN, having evolved into a line of affordable accessories.
CinemaTelevision
Iman twice appeared in Miami Vice, playing Dakota in Back in the World (1985) and Lois Blyth in Love At First Sight (1988). Also in 1988, she appeared as Marie Babineaux on an episode of In the Heat of the Night.
In the mid-2000s, Iman spent two years as the host of Bravo TV's fashion-themed show, Project Runway Canada. In November 2010, she along with friend and colleague, designer Isaac Mizrahi, also began hosting the second season of The Fashion Show, a series Bravo started to replace its former hit Project Runway that now moved to the Lifetime network.
Film
An occasional actress, Iman first featured in the 1979 British film The Human Factor, and appeared in the 1985 Oscar-winning film Out of Africa alongside Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. She then portrayed Nina Beka in the 1987 thriller No Way Out with Kevin Costner, Hedy in the Michael Caine comedy Surrender the same year, and later played a shapeshifting alien named Martia in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). Iman also dabbled in some comedic roles, appearing in The Linguini Incident in 1991 opposite her husband David Bowie, as well as the 1994 comedy/romance film Exit to Eden.
Video games
Iman makes a cameo alongside her husband David Bowie in the 1999 Windows 9x and Dreamcast 3D adventure game, Omikron: The Nomad Soul, developed by the video game company Quantic Dream. She appears as one of the numerous Omikronian citizens the player can "reincarnate" into.
Philanthropy
In addition to running her global beauty company, Iman is also actively involved in a number of charitable endeavors. She is currently a spokesperson for the Keep a Child Alive program, and works closely with, among others, the Children's Defense Fund. She also serves as an Ambassador for Save the Children, and has been active in raising awareness of their relief services in the greater East Africa region. Additionally, Iman works with the Enough Project to end the global trade in conflict minerals, having played a key part in the public campaign against blood diamonds through her termination of her contract with the diamonds conglomerate De Beers over a conflict of ethics.
Awards
Over the course of her long modelling and philanthropic career, Iman has received many awards. On 7 June 2010, she received aFashion Icon lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), a special prize reserved for "an individual whose signature style has had a profound influence on fashion". Iman selected her friend, actress and former model Isabella Rossellini, to present the award. Wearing a gown designed by Giambattista Valli with four giant diamond bracelets on each arm, Iman thanked her parents "for giving me a neck longer than any other girl on any go-see anywhere in the world".
Personal life
Iman first got married at the age of eighteen to a young Somali man with whom she had fallen in love. The marriage ended a few years later when she moved to the United States to pursue a modeling career. In 1977, she married American basketball player Spencer Haywood. Their daughter, Zulekha Haywood, was born in 1978. The two divorced in February 1987. On 24 April 1992, Iman married British rock musician David Bowie in a private ceremony in Lausanne. The wedding was later solemnized on 6 June in Florence. They have one daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, born 15 August 2000. Iman is also stepmother to Bowie's son from a previous marriage, Duncan Jones. Both children bear Bowie's legal surname. Iman and her family reside primarily in Manhattan and London.
