Oh, Now I want to know your thoughts on Fledge, and maybe the other Knight Academy Students
Oh my god I love Fledge (and pretty much every NPC but especially the students). This is gonna be kind of a mix of game headcanons and TMM headcanons, because the two blend into each other since TMM is post-game.
I really enjoy Fledge as a character in canon! Even though he only participates briefly in the main storyline (basically, just reporting on what happened to Link's Crimson Loftwing), I like that he has his own arc in sidequests about wanting to get physically stronger. I think he's just sweet and adorable tbh, and I like that he doesn't really undergo a stereotypical gymbro personality change? Like, he gets buffed out as all hell but it doesn't change that he's still kind of a sensitive and soft spoken person. I like to imagine that he has relatively mellow creative hobbies like sewing or painting, and he still does that even after becoming Stronk Fledge.
In TMM he is about to participate in his Wing Ceremony and hopefully graduate into a Skyloft Knight. He's still an undergrad and is two years Link's junior (18). He looks up to Link and may or may not have a little crush on him.
For the other students, I'm going to make a lore post. Turns out as per usual, I was getting too long-winded and detailed, so I just shoved it all into its own thing.
Thank you so much for the ask!

Three: the one about the other friends
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Too-ticky is the perfect neutral-tone master of understatement. Her part is small but memorable.
Snorkmaiden is done dirty tbh. Not only is she hardly in the game, her one role is to be sad about her missing anklet. She doesn't even mention Moomintroll is missing, and she isn't given an invite to the play either! Bizarre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Snork has more to do. I honestly kinda felt like I was cheating by blocking his stick in the race. On the other hand... he kinda did make a "my johnson is bigger than yours" joke sooooo... *ahem* And gotta add Snufkin talking smack about Little My when she's not there to smack back haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS GHOST WAS THE BEST THING EVER. Def my surprise VIP of the game hahaha. He's adorable, and he gives me an excuse to torture the police officers x'D At first I thought the willing victims were gonna be Snufkin's friends and I was like ???? TBH I was worried all the park mazes would get repetitive and dull, but because they changed up how you play every time, it didn't. And sneaking up on police to lead them to the ghost was my faaaaaavorite of all
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moominpappa and mamma don't have a big role either. But Pappa at least is involved by losing his manuscript, and organizing the play. Moominmamma is involved by worrying about Moomintroll, offering to bake cookies, and coddling her husband xP
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Muskrat is... relatable, ngl
Tumblr media
Back to what I said earlier about Snufkin's theme of learning to rely on others. Snufkin never says anything like "Moominvalley only needs me." And this reprimand is just rather rich coming from the muskrat. But I guess there is a message there, as with Little My, that what people say isn't always how they really feel, and actions speak louder than words. Basically - Muskrat and Little My are both tsunderes lmao. And these tsunderes are bothered by true loners. It's fine to insult people if you secretly really like them, but for heaven's sake don't be a loner! /sarcasm
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sniff: "SaVE mE SnUFKiN DO soMETHinG SNuFKIN YOU SEem lONelY SnUFkin"
Sniff's character design is adorable though. Super super super cute
the "lonely" thing wouldn't bother me if I just got where tf it's coming from. Of course Snufkin's lonely, his best friend is missing?? Of course he's not relying on his friends, all they do is ask him to help them and then berate him for not being more of a people person bahaha. Ehhh. As a theme it's fine, but it feels more like sprinkles on the cake than the cake's actual flavor if you get what I mean.
Tumblr media
Also really appreciate that Cedric has this to say every time he "talks"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Woodies are fantastic and I love how they proliferate. Really I was running for my life trying to shake them off. And what could be more fun than trapping a horde of children behind a rock... only to realize two seconds later that actually you need their help... and then immediately running away from them again what message about learning to appreciate others more Snufkin what what??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And special runners up: Edward the Booble was all kinds of awesome. And I just wish we got more of Ninny! I think she should have had a more substantial sidequest that ended with her becoming visible. Maybe there is and I missed that one too lol

More FFXVI stuff from my ongoing playthough (next major plot point down):
4/5 mothercrystals down
And the world is not happy about it
But mostly because Bhunivelze 2.0 I mean...Ultima fucked the world
(The continued meld of XIII trilogy/XIV/FMA storywise amuses me)
I am genuinely surprised that both Joshua and Dion made it out of the story section alive...ish
Dion is a good boy :( but, like his step brothers, he has not been having a good time.
Evil mother continued to be just as great at parenting all the way to the end
Even when 2/3 of her sons/stepsons were trying to give her a chance of getting out of there alive (as...reluctant as Clive also looked)
Personally I was on Team Jill: hold a sword to her throat for disrespecting Clive
Eikon Fusion Morphing Time was interesting
I would be mad about them changing the battle mechanics MID BATTLE but they went 'and this move works like Phoenix Shift' and I was like 'OMG THANK YOU, MY MOST ABUSED MOVE'
Did not die to Bahamut. I am...almost getting good.
I am starting to feel like this is probably the time to maybe grind a little. I've been doing all the side quests as they've come up (except a couple hunts) but I feel like I could probably take some time to comb over some areas and fight some stuff on the way.
The fights are fine but the waves of groups with a tough enemy in the middle can get a bit dicey. Because I'm not good at focusing on multiple enemies
(I tend to use Flames of Rebirth to get rid of all the weaker enemies so I can focus tbh)
About to head to kanker (sp) and (I assume) get my ship
I've just realised...where is the water Eikon?
Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Earth, Light, Dark...water should be the 8th but it hasn't been mentioned in story??? And, I don't think Clive has room for it on his Eikon wheel???
But they've talked about 8 Eikons for 8 elements
They have also mentioned unaspected but that was mentioned as a secret 9th thing
Am I missing something??? Brain???
Anyway, I went to bed before hopping across to Kanver and I was happy to see that my team in the save was Clive, Torgal, Jill and Joshua
I thought I would never see it! Even though Joshua has been listed in the 'main protaganist' section of the relationship chart since it turned up
Also random moments:
Otto remembering Cid genuinely made me cry
Not a overexagerated 'I'm crying'
Actual real tears
Jill 'ahem'ing Isabelle for flirting with Clive was hilarious
Like...'in front of her salad'
Clive's awkward acting in Dalimil being just as awkward as in his presentation to his uncle
10/10 best boy
I love the continued theme of Uncle Byron being the most embarrassing member of the family but also a) genuinely on your side b) actually useful and competent c) clearly adored regardless
I can't wait to see him cry when Joshua turns up
Oh oh oh...I also love that this game isn't afraid to have all their badass characters cry
Yes...more healthy expressions of emotions, please
Even the 'grumpy old sod' got to cry
Oh, and I haven't said it in this post yet so TORGAL IS THE BEST BOY...WHO'S A GOOD BOY! YOU ARE!!!!
The sidequest 'something is wrong with the pupper' came up and it was like 'THIS IS NOW THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY...DROP EVERYTHING ELSE...MAIN QUEST IS ON HOLD'
Turned out he was just unsatisfied with his treats
But he deserves the best

First Bloodlines run - here’s how it worked out!
Didn’t get to actually finish - thanks, cutscene glitch - but I got to the last scene and I at least watched the Anarch ending on Youtube XD;; While I really do want to do at least two more runs, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to; either way, I mostly enjoyed my first run a ton!
More detail below the cut - how Sierra turned out as protag, and her views on other characters. I’ll write a separate ‘thoughts on Bloodlines as a game and its characters’ later on, this is just for Sierra’s run specifically.
So, Sierra as a character! Usually super high humanity - most drops were due to glitches or completely accidental (glitch - had to kill Hospital Guy because it flat-out wouldn’t let him escape, danced it back. Accidental - shot one of the hostages at Hollowbrook, felt horrible for it). One non-accidental one was convincing Ash to switch clothes with a guy at the club; she hadn’t expected the hunters to kill first and ask questions later. Yeah, also felt guilty about it. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy to put her at 9 for Humanity - she tried to help everyone she could, aside from those actively trying to kill her.
Ended up a much brainier character than I was expecting, which, uh, is usually what happens with my characters tbh. Still fits her character! She’s not scholarly (was a college drop-out) and prefers actually doing things than sitting still, but she’s clever and curious. Combat was usually almost always melee, because vampires with katanas are cool. High persuasion, she’s good at defusing a situation when fighting isn’t warranted.
Most-used discipline ended up being Animalism. Never did max out Protean :( Did use it a ton in dark areas, but mostly for night vision.
Sidequests - got a lot done. Failed three - Spiritual Release (sorry, ghosts :( ), You Only Die Once A Night (actually, I started this then died with 30 seconds to go, reset, and refused to start it again XD), and Dirty Dishes.
Missed or outright avoided Drug Trip, Trick or Treatment (Heather - the whole storyline with her bugs me), Daydream Believer (Copper is sweet, dammit, don't be mean!!), Replanting a Lily (never went back to the clinic after saving Lily), Traffik, And Her Name Was Venus/Venucide, Pimpin' for Romero, A Dish Best Served Cold (alas, you can’t convince the reviewer to give it a ragingly good review just to piss off SparklingWater XD), Model Citizen/Cover Girl, Poster Session, and all the Chinatown ones (I would have done Gone Fishin' if I had found it, refused Eye Gouge Hell, didn't encounter the others).
Character interactions - ended up ride-or-die Anarch. Part of that was that her literal first impressions were of Nines saving her life and Jack guiding her through how to survive a terrifying, bewildering situation, a lot of it was that she did start out as an activist in the first place, so falling in with the Anarchs was a natural continuation of that. Adores and looks up to Nines, felt horrifically guilty at the blood hunt, and was devastated when she thought he had died at Griffith Park. She was a mess after that (also a good part to do with rotschreck and spending a good five minutes or so trying really hard not to frenzy in terror), and it was only because of Jack that she didn’t fall apart completely. Jack is like the favourite weird uncle - she doesn’t know his involvement in the whole plot and I think wouldn’t quite understand why he set it in motion, but she really likes the impression he shows. Adores Damsel, and she’s not sure what to do with Skelter’s belief in the more religious aspects of stuff but likes him a lot too.
Aside from Nines, the other character she adores the most is Beckett! Her first words to him were literally, “Holy shit how did you do that that’s so cool can you teach me to do that?!”, she finds his adventures and knowledge absolutely fascinating, and she definitely started looking up archeological and anthropological stuff both for her own curiosity and to impress him XD
Other positive relationships - Jeanette is a bit complicated because of the whole Slashterpiece and pendant thing, but damn, at least she didn’t try to kill her like Therese did; while she wanted to reconcile the sisters, she was kind of relieved when Jeanette was the one who survived. Just found her more approachable and welcoming. Also definitely got drawn in by VV. She’s weak for pretty girls XD Got on great with Merc (despite the whole... Cammy thing), Knox, the Thinblood kids (who she hung out with a bunch while still in Santa Monica), Trip, Mitnick, and Ash (who she will fight people to protect). Chunk is a precious being who must be protected at all costs; at the Tower, she advised him that LaCroix was no good and he deserved better.
Complicated situations - initially did think Strauss was okay but her views on him soured fast when she learned about gargoyles. Isaac is mostly fine but they don’t have a lot of common ground, given her preferred genre is ‘loud action movies’ XD She can see why VV looks up to him, though, and felt quite sad about everything with Ash in general. Pisha scared her but she tried really hard not to judge, basically? I mean, predators gotta eat too... The cab driver bothers her for reasons she can’t articulate. Very odd man, that one. When she learned why the Southland Slasher was doing what he was doing, she felt sorry for him, and encouraged him to join the Anarchs for direction and a more positive outlet for his emotions.
Antagonists - mostly didn’t take pleasure in killing them, but she definitely felt pretty satisfied stabbing LaCroix >.> Will have nightmares for the rest of her unlife about Andrei’s house and the sanctum at Hollowbrook, the Mandarin’s tests, and the expression on Ash’s face when he talked about how much the Society of Leopold enjoyed torturing him. Gimble freaked her the hell out. And if she ever catches Vandal Cleaver alone, she’s going to flat-out kill him if she gets the opportunity.
For the future, I’ve been trying to work out how she and Lettow supposedly know each other (he mentions the fledgling as ‘a friend of mine’), given their opposing political views. I’m thinking their common ground would be that they’re both Gangrel; I can see them meeting by chance at some point, and Sierra requesting tutoring in Protean forms, which Lettow is pretty damn good at (she might be higher generation, 8th to his 9th, but he’s a lot older and more experienced).
Beyond that, info on her and her coterie can be found here! Yes, she fully appreciates the irony of dating a Garou, haha.

current progress: finished Freeing Korok Forest as my last major story battle + completed most of the sidequest ones that are open to me
which means that I have several more playable characters, WHICH MEANS it’s time to discuss my thoughts on everybody and how their combat styles work with my own preferences!
we’ll go in order of recruitment, okay, and yes I am going to include the Divine Beasts I’ve used so far, since they don’t all fight exactly alike
Link: good, solid, dependable Link! I enjoy that he can use all the weapon types he can in BOTW, and my preferences for him match the ones I have there, lmao--enjoy the one-handed sword (especially now that I have the BLADE OF EVIL’S BANE, which is what I like calling the Master Sword, sue me), really enjoy the spear, do not like two-handed weapons. THEY’RE SLOWER AND UNWIELDY, WHAT CAN I SAY. tbh, though, I’ve ended up only using him when I absolutely have to. I fight as Link in every main Zelda game, after all, so for this I’d rather play as characters I’ve never gotten to before. also he has my least favorite Remote Bombs. YES this is something I care about, explosives are important to me!!!
Impa: YES YES GOOD. she was my favorite in the demo, but now that I have more characters, she’s slipped a little in my rankings. still a top fave, though! she’s speedy, has really fun attacks, pretty good Remote Bombs, and I love having the copies of her on the battlefield. I always have fun fighting as Impa, she kicks a LOT of ass.
Zelda: fairly fun, but not a top fave, though she DOES have my favorite Remote Bombs and it’s honestly just great to be able to play as a Zelda. I’m looking forward to her gaining her powers, though, because that looks AWESOME, judging by the trailer. so, final opinion/ranking of her is pending, really.
Mipha: THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST!!! <3 <3 <3 she was always destined to be my #1 fave playable, lbr here. I just. I REALLY LOVE MIPHA, OKAY? as both a character and as a fighter. like, WOW, her fighting style is PERFECTLY tailored to my preferences??? when it comes to directly controlling characters in action-y battles--such as in Tales games or Trials of Mana--I’ve always gravitated towards characters that are extremely agile. Mipha is the fastest character on the roster, she uses a spear, which is one of my favorite weapons ever, and she has water attacks, and water is one of my favorite magic elements to use. so, she’s perfect for me. I use her the most, obviously. <3 <3 <3 great Remote Bombs, too!
Vah Ruta: um. I mean. EPIC. I love being the one in control of this thing, it is SUPER fun to just stomp through the battlefield firing ice and lasers and blocking shots with ice blocks, y’know, the ones I had to dodge when Sidon helped me get onto it in BOTW. blowing up several Lynels with lasers is super satisfying, ngl.
Daruk: y’know what kind of characters I DON’T like using in the games I mentioned in Mipha’s paragraph? the ones that hit hard but move very slowly. Daruk is one of these characters. so, he is definitely my least fave to control because this is just not my style at all. pretty good Remote Bombs, though it takes getting used to, and making magma bombs explode is cool, just. TOO SLOW.
Vah Rudania: ALSO SUPER FUN. I love stomping with it, and firing off all the explody things. OH, and I forgot to mention, I love the music for riding these things! You get to hear bits from the approaches to them in BOTW, plus some of the music from the interior. Which means the epic emotional music from the attack on Vah Ruta, and also the excellent interior music from Vah Rudania, which I personally enjoy the most out of all the interior themes, cause it was just FUN.
Revali: SURPRISINGLY ONE OF MY FAVORITES! I’m not the biggest Revali fan around, though he’s starting to grow on me a little, and it definitely helps that the dude is a fucking BEAST in battle. he’s not as fast as Mipha, but he’s still pretty fast, and I love his aerial attacks. his animation for Stasis is hilarious, as is the “My feathers!” when you get hit with a fire attack. great Remote Bombs, too. overall, just really fun to control.
Vah Medoh: IS AWESOME. I love flying, and shooting lasers, and switching perspectives was neat, too. might’ve been my fave Divine Beast stage so far, actually.
Urbosa: also a fave!!! I knew I was gonna love controlling her, so this is no surprise. good speed, fun attacks, and LIGHTNING <3 <3 <3 Urbosa’s Fury in BOTW remains one of the most satisfying attacks I’ve ever done in a game, and lightning is my other fave magic element. so of course she is super fun to control, and I really like her Remote Bombs too.
Hestu: absolutely hilarious, the funniest possible character they could’ve made playable. on the low end of the speed spectrum, but faster than Daruk, and honestly the comedy of hearing “shimmy shimmy!” as a battle cry + summoning Koroks to help you fight, complete with “ya ha ha”s as you whack monsters with maracas is funny and adorable enough to make up for it. everything about this is amusing and delightful.
can’t wait to pilot Vah Naboris!

long ass rant abt bl3
just, so many spoilers under the readmore, things i thought the game did poorly and things i wish were changed
I should have expected it to be not great being that, borderlands was NEVER fantastic with its writing and character development. Ive been spoiled by tales from the borderlands tbh. I think borderlands three tho was like… fantastically underwhelming.
I had a blast with the beginning of the game up through the end of the first vault, where the excitement peetered off.
Firstly, i wholly believe Maya was done horribly. Compare her death to say, Roland. Even if you hadn’t played BL1, you had almost the entirety of 2 to get to know him and his character and his place in the world of borderlands. Maya’s death was INCREDIBLY early in comparison. And not only that, the characters dont get to mourn aside from a few offhand voicelines. Mordecai mourned for bloodwing in a more substantial way - you get two full side quests about it. Zer0 says one offhand voiceline for maya. They were her friend goddamn it, i wanted MORE.
ava is a good character but the fridging of maya just makes her into… what, a brat who accidentally got her killed and now has her powers? it would have been more interesting for them to develop alongside each other through the game and if maya died near the end, youd have cared a lot more about ava too. she’s just really one note right now.
Speaking of side quests, there were very few. They were sparse and honestly i dont think they added much to the plot of the game or the world.
in borderlands 2, side quests, at least in my eyes, were what forced you to explore the map. in borderlands 3 they forgo a lot of side quests in favor of the crew challenges, which were far less rewarding imo. like, build claptrap a gf with parts from dead claptraps in the world. disable COV radio towers for moxxi, kill fauna for hammerlock, people for zer0, etc, but except for zer0 and hammerlock you just get very similar voice lines in return. as well as xp. they dont add to the plot or worldbuilding or characters in any way.
the lack of side quests i think really hurt my enjoyment of the game, because in bl2 it was the sidequests that got you to know the main cast and see that they were working behind the scenes. like brick and his slabs, moxxi asking you to sabotage opportunity, ellie and scooters more jokey side quests even!! it made them feel real with motives outside the main quest. bl3 didnt really have any of that past the first vault (i say this because lorelai gave some good sidequests.) in 3, moxxi and hammerlock only give u one side quest each. marcus (who gave u a lot on bl2) didnt give you any. he was literally just there to run the ammo shop.
some of the more hyped characters dont really do shit. the b-team, mordecai/brick/tina dont really do…anything, they bust hammerlock out of jail, and then give you one side quest per person. thats really it. i hoped that, considering their roles in bl2 and their relationship to lilith, theyd have big roles here too. they didnt. they were truly forgettable.
aurelia showed up to fill a villain slot and died. maybe im a sucker for redemption, but i hoped theyd had more in store for her. and they just…didnt. just like, a whole mission of wainwright calling her a harpy while hammerlock really wants to convince her to not be evil only to get fucking shot by her, like,,,,
vaughn is a joke. they did him truly dirty. his character development tanked into a “haha look at him hes strange and naked” joke. tftbl ending vaughn would NEVER. i wish theyd acknowledge the events of tales from the borderlands AT ALL. or had vaughn and rhys SPEAK TO EACH OTHER.
rhys is another thing, i rly dislike the relationship theyre pushing w him and sasha even tho sasha literally didnt show up in the game. apparently theres echo logs of him obsessing over and searching for her (i didnt find these in my own game but like, i believe it) and her picture on his desk and god DAMN it just let it rest,
BALEX was bland and so immediately misogynistic that i hated him on principle.
so then theres this character Typhon Daleon. he is the first vault hunter, but to my knowledge the only mentions of him occur in bl3. in fact, i dont think he’s mentioned in a main quest until after you kill troy and meet him in person, you only hear of him in the typhon logs which are optional. Then in the final quest you learn troy and tyreen are his kids, then he dies. i had no attachment to this character! he should have at least been built up in borderlands 2, if not in all of the previous games to get me to at least go “huh neat!” when its revealed hes alive, his kids are the villains, etc.
tannis… they handled her being a siren poorly, my gripe isnt that i called it, its that it isnt really explained how she got her powers. i was pissed for like a good while after she reveals that she has ANGELS powers because i assumed somehow she stole or manufactured them. theres an eridian recording that KIND OF explains it, but again, those are OPTIONAL. idk if i just blanked out when she went, oh, by the way, heres why,  but to my knowledge its never explained to the player in a main or side mission, at least until you see ava get mayas powers. its infuriating.
worldbuilding wise, this is a much smaller issue, but i wish there were nonhostile fauna on the other planets. pandoras whole thing, the big meme the big laff, is that everything wants to kill u there. so it wouldve been nice to like, see some fauna thats docile. runs away from the player, is chased around by the carnivorous fauna or bandits or something. maybe a hammerlocks challenge could be to use stealth to kill a docile animal or something, it just would have been nice,
i also didnt think the ending made sense, lilith,.. punched the moon and disappeared? died? also brick and mordecai DIDNT GET TO BE THERE FOR HER OR WITH HER AT ALL. after all of bl2 where its SHOWN they’re good friends who care about each other, youd think theyd get to witness her death/disappearance. on top of that it felt like the whole game was building to something with lilith and the climax was so underwhelming.
i just want to beat randy bitchford with a rolled up newspaper until he stops being a piece of human shit and borderlands can develop the characters and world.
the good parts of the game were…the graphics and the bossfights. the boss fights were all unique and interesting and FUN. katagawa jr, troy, the second vault monster, and tyreen were my faves in that order. hammerlock and wainwrights relationship was adorable and i liked the credits art of wainwright proposing. clay was a fun character but like all the others, didnt have development.
i also had a lot of glitches. my game would crash if i navigated menus too quickly, i had an issue with effects from shields staying on my screen even tho they should have ended, as well as a lot of glitching after cutscenes, most notably falling through the floor after the troy bossfight. a lot of my quest objectives glitched and wouldnt activate until i reloaded, which was frustrating.
i DID like the game. but i dont know if ill do a replay past promethea. i was just wishing itd be a whole game on the level of the Commander Lilith DLC.
TLDR i wouldn’t have minded the game being so lilith centric if the other characters got to matter at ALL.

having FINALLY reached promethea (by which i mean, the next quest item is ‘go to promethea’) here are some initial thoughts for bl3
spoilers i guess but i still haven’t surpassed anything gearbox didn’t already show lol
gearbox having shown alll of this plus it being pandora made this kind of a trudge tbh i REALLY just wanted to get sanctuary 3 and gtfo of pandora but i knew if i didn’t do the pandoran sidequests i’d be underlevelled
plus my general approach to these games is to be overlevelled for anything i even attempt to do, which is now at extreme odds with my desire to learn the story quickly so i can continue uh using the internet
i’m playing amara, i originally equipped phasecast but now i’ve switched to phase... smash.... or whatever the ground punch one is and I love it lmao i love running up to enemies like a human canon and then punching the ground and fuckin em up
the emphasis in amara’s lines on her fame and stuff is funny to me. READY FOR THE PAPARAZZI pfffttft
i’m playing on “easy” mode and the idea that stuff is usually MORE bullet spongey than this is absurd to me
bl3 vaughn is not valid
i mean i saw that coming but Wowee and Yikes he’s unbearable to listen to and not only because he’s chris hardwick although that sure doesn’t help
ellie on the other hand is a HUGE improvement over scooter, she’s adorable
i really enjoyed that as we left pandora the cut scene was lilith, ellie and tannis ... uh and i guess claptrap, whatever
tyreen is SO much fun omg. i like all the COV videos and stuff
the propaganda video about the “liarhawk” was terrible but like in the exact right way for terrible youtuber villains lmfao
the skags sounding like dogs.... :(
i feel like it’d be weirdly dissonant if i was playing fl4k
in sum i’m having a decent time but i’m mostly excited to get off pandora and see some other stuff and more characters. rhys!! what up!!

So, I managed to get my butt kicked off the servers just as I unlocked what I believe is the second-to-last duty of Shadowbringers. Now that I’m left to fervently deny the option of sleep, I instead shall take the time to ramble on about all of the characters (new and old) this new expansion has made me love, interested in, and/or just very deeply want to write about
and I’ll likely add to it as I finish sidequests...and when it isn’t almost 4 a.m.
As to be expected, this list is riddled with spoilers for the entirety of Shadowbringers, so read on at your own peril!
it’s also riddled with thirst because of course, this is me we’re talking about
Kee-Satt - A wholesome Miqo’te boy found in Amh Araeng who cares a damn lot about his community. You meet him in one of the Aethercurrent quests, but I was curious enough to keep going for a bit afterwards and I’m happy I did! He just wants to get the materials to make a really useful metal, but he’s dealing with some intense discrimination since he’s the only Miqo’te among Hrothgar in the town (the others left for Eulmore at some point). He apparently has the cold shoulder for literally everyone but the WoL/D and confides his hopes and dreams to make his town better and safer with this ore he’s trying to find and I just love him.
Kai-Shirr - You meet him early-on in the MSQ while in Eulmore and I just...he’s got a cute face, a cute voice, and damn if I almost fucking lost my shit when I thought he was going to die. He was so desperate to be with his friends and I am forever sad that he at some point had to accept the fact that those friends were dead and like, I worry for him. Does he have any family? Anyone?? Please Kai-Shirr for the love of god tell me you’re doing alright let me help you.
Moren - The historian? Librarian? of the Crystarium that you meet early in the MSQ. He is a total dork and I have a total softspot for cuties like him. 10/10 would protect at all times, 10/10 would have him recite all sorts of stories from the First just so I could hear his soft voice more. Perhaps hear his voice in more ways than one.
Quinfort / Valan - Two adorable dorks that are part of an Aethercurrent quest in the Rat’Tika Greatwoods, though there is certainly more content of them afterwards in the sidequest chain. Definitely seem like close friends, Valan is the pragmatic to Quinfort’s exuberance and tbh I’d date both of them.
Chai-Nuzz / Dulia-Chai - A married Miqo’te couple who you meet early on in the MSQ. For a while I thought I was going to loathe them since at first I thought they were going to be written super shallowly, as one might expect from how Eulmore residents were at first glance. They get a bit of growth during the MSQ and, honestly, I love them both--they have the most adorable relationship that’s pretty damn supportive of one another and!! Dulia-Chai is a fat female character that isn’t!! Played off!! Like a joke!! She’s sweet and funny and super encouraging to her husband Chai-Nuzz. 10/10 would date them and I’m not afraid to say it. Let me date these two Square Enix, I swear to god.
Lue-Reeq - He is one of the four or five role quest NPCs in Shadowbringers, specifically for ranged DPS characters. I really enjoyed learning about him, honestly--he’s the child of a rich couple of Eulmore and by god does it show. He’s a bit spoiled at the beginning of the quest and a fair bit naive, but he was never really rude--a young man who had some self-confidence issues that he hid by tossing money around to try and buy friendship from people. It certainly didn’t help that I was playing as Khalja at that point in the game (who is my only top OC to date) and I wanted so bad to just fuck this soft Miqo’te man right out in the middle of the fucking forest after I finished the last battle of the questline.
Ardbert - This man has been through so much shit. He deserves a hug and, if it were me, more than a hug, but spectral kinky times aside I adored that I got to see so much more of his history and connections with the people of the First. The friendship that he shares with the WoL/D by the end of the MSQ is super heartwarming. I honestly think I’d have his whole team on this list if I had the time to go through the multiple role questlines that give you more insight to each of them
Solus [Emet-Selch] - Hello yes I’m too busy crying in the corner for commentary. Jk, but for real the amount of lore we got for the Ascians and their world and the new perspective of all the game’s evens we gained from that was...humbling, to say the least. It’s like, I still gotta kick your ass, but I sympathize with the heavy weight of pain and loss that you’ve been carrying with you for literal eons. A good example of a sympathetic villain. 10/10 would entertain a whole AU where somehow Emet-Selch is convinced to not do the thing, and/or maybe even indulge in a lil cliche concept of him falling in love with someone in the Source, like, for realsies, and eventually coming to terms with the fact that he will never get back the world and people he’s lost so long ago--might as well protect the people in the here and now.
Crystal Exarch [G’raha Tia] - I contemplated just putting a string of ‘aaa’ in here, but I figured it wouldn’t exactly communicate the sweet vindication I felt when I saw that hood get blown off to reveal his face in that absolutely beautiful cutscene. It was fucking cinematic, I fucking almost bawled. There is so much depth and literal years of stuff to wade through because, well, G’raha Tia is fucking alive and he’s over 100 years old and he’s been waiting all of those years for you. I watched those cutscenes, I read that dialogue, he’s so fucking in love with you and holy fuck do I absolutely reciprocate those feelings.
Innocence - I want you to take everything you know and trust about the universe and just toss it straight out of the window, because that’s what happened exactly at the second phase of the Crown of the Immaculate trial. My love for this character, whom I am considering as entirely separate from Vauthry for the sake of my own sanity, is largely based on aesthetics because....he is.....Big Sexy..... Look, I’m content with having an AU to have my attraction and writing make sense with him.
Thancred - More like Dadcred amiright? But for real, no, Thancred had a lot of emotional healing and growing through this expansion and I fucking loved it. His acceptance of Minfilia’s passing in the end, his naming of Ryne, how the two of them bonded as parent and child...it just brings a tear to my eyes. Also he is fucking hot as a gunbreaker.
Urianger - I’m not sure if it’s because Urianger really had an opportunity to shine with the Pixie quests/Il Mheg area, or if it’s because he totally rocks his new astrologian class, but he is just 10/10 in this expansion. Maybe it’s because he stopped wearing the goddamn eAR COZIES
Zenos - He has become Ultimate Yandere(tm) now. And, gods above, if that’s not one of my most guilty-pleasure Things(tm) to work with in fiction. He was in the game for maybe 10 on-screen minutes at MOST and yet he spawned so many damned ideas I can use.

ooh do James and Cvetko then??
WELL, this took a lot longer than expected
James
01. Fullname: James doesn’t have a canon full name, but it would probably be somethingof Jewish origin, even though his family wasn’t a particularly religious one.Not that it really matters, since he doesn’t use it anymore. His go-to lastname is the very-fake-sounding “McCool”.
02. Best friend: Mira!
03. Sexuality: Very pansexual, thoughit took him an ungodly long time to figure it out. He tends to be more oftenattracted to women, though tbh that’s mostly a remnant of the whole “well, I’mattracted to girls, so I must be straight, why would I be attracted to otherpeople?” mentality he had for a long time.
04. Favorite color: Red!
05. Relationship status: Very much in love with a certain adorable alien… :D
06. Ideal mate: Because James has a very short attention span and will so oftentry to do everything at the same time!!,the best romantic partners for him are people who tend to be calmer and quieter. They force him to chill and pay attention! Of course, given how he can bedangerous to humans, his partner can’t be human either. He needs someone whowill listen to him and notice when he grows insecure and starts beating himselfdown for small mistakes, and someone who won’t be fooled his self-assuredfaçade. James needs someone who makes him feel important, and who will beunderstanding when it comes to all the things he can or can’t do because he’s avampire. So… yeah, Argus is a good pick here. Mira would be too, though I likedthe idea of them staying friends (unless we’re talking about AUs, in whichyeah, that could happen! That polyamorous AU is Important™.)
07. Turn-ons : James very much likes the idea of being tied up, though I don’tthink it’s something he would enjoy all that much with Argus! Dirty talk (goodor bad) is a very quick way to get his attention, and so is lingerie. He loveswhen Argus wears more feminine clothing? TBH, James could probably get into alot of different kinks, as long as they don’t involve pain in any way. He isn’tinto pain at all.
08. Favorite food: …..well, he doesn’t get to eat food these days withoutgetting horribly sick, so that’s kind of a problem… As a human, he loved prettymuch anything sugary and brightly colored.
09. Crushes: Argus and Mira!
10. Favorite music: If you ask him: nothing but classic rock. But for real, heenjoys pretty much anything that sounds kinda upbeat and catchy. I’m making thatplaylist canon, okay.
11. Biggest fear: Hurting people. Especially the ones he loves, obviously, but really,he’s terrified of hurting anyone. James will never stop being scared that hemight snap and attack people when he is hungry or sick. It’s always a risk, even though he generally does great when it comes to controlling himself.
12. Biggest fantasy: No matter how happy he is with Argus and Mira, he’ll neverstop wondering what his life would be now if he had never become a vampire. It’snot something he feels comfortable talking about at all, but he can’t stophimself from thinking about it.
13. Bad habits: He talks way too much for his own good. He’s so eager wheneverhe meets new people, he’ll sometimes ask intrusive questions. He fidgets a lot(lots of foot tapping and playingwith his hair) and has a hard time focussing on stuff for long periods of timesunless he’s particularly interested.
14. Biggest regret: Becoming a vampire. Even though it’s not like he really hada say in the matter… He blames himself for being too trusting and naïve in thefirst place.
15. Best kept secrets: Well, he’s a vampire. And Argus is an alien. And Mira is…whatever she is. Those are pretty important secrets!
16. Last thought: as in “before dying”? Since he can’t really die from naturalcauses, if it happens it’ll either be an accident (in which case he doesn’thave much of a last thought besides “?????”) or of his own choice, in whichcase he would definitely try to focus on the people he loves.
17. Worst romantic experience: When he was a teen he tried to ask a girl outand she very loudly laughed in his face. It was a bad time.
18. Biggest insecurity: James is deeply anxious about his vampirism, andregardless of how well he handles his craving for human blood, he’s alwaysgoing to feel like he’s putting the people around him in danger. (Which… he is,simply by refusing to cut himself from all human contact.) He doesn’t deal wellwith loneliness either.
19. Weapon of choice: He’s probably use a baseball bat or something. If he diddrink human blood, he’d use his fangs and telekinesis instead!
20. Role Model: Never really thought about this…. Probably his parents? Heloved them so much, and he really misses them. They were good people.
Cvetko
01. Fullname: In-game he didn’t have a last name, but in Sidequest Cvetko has the lastname Arbeit, which is the last name given to all the kids who grew up in theorphanage he comes from!
02. Best friend: Cvetko doesn’t currently have a best friend, so he’s open tosuggestions! His previous best friend was named Cy, and my fancast is Ross O’Donovanin case you’re curious.
03. Sexuality: Probably straight? He doesn’t think about sex or romance allthat much.
04. Favorite color: Green!
05. Relationship status: Single
06. Ideal mate: Well, it’s not like he’s given much thought to it… Buthonestly, what Cvetko needs is someone who will call him out on his bullshitand force him to be less self-centered.
07. Turn-ons: Money. Mostly money.
08. Favorite food: !!! I think in Sidequest his fave food is supposed to bechocolate pastries, but I really love the idea of him being super into baklava,or any dessert that uses honey in place of sugar?
09. Crushes: Hyacinth, eventually!
10. Favorite music: the sweet, sweet sound of gold and silver in a bag, tbh
11. Biggest fear: Cvetko has done A Lot of shitty things in the past, and so helives in constant fear of all that bullshit eventually catching up on him. Alot of people hate his guts, and it’s not like he doesn’t deserve it.
12. Biggest fantasy: ?? this??  (from to 2: 24 to 2:42, obviously, haha)
13. Bad habits: Cvets lies far too much for his own good, and even when hedoesn’t flat out lie, he’ll often bed the truth A Lot.
14. Biggest regret: Let’s just say leaving Cy behind was not his proudestmoment….
15. Best kept secrets: …..He left his best friend out to die at the pitchforks ofan angry mob. It’s Bad™.
16. Last thought: man, i got nothing here, really.
17. Worst romantic experience: Cvets never really showed much interest forromance, so i’m not sure? i’d originally planned on having be kind of awomanizer when i first created him, but it never came up in-game, and i dunno, idon’t really imagine him ever having experienced much more than a fewunimportant crushes that didn’t go anywhere.
18. Biggest insecurity: Cvets values his freedom a lot, and he always needs tofeel like he has an escape route out of any potentially bad situation.
19. Weapon of choice: He has a bow and a rapier! Mostly he prefers the bowbecause it allows him to fight from a distance.
20. Role Model:  Cvetko is his very own role model.

A, K, R!!
vidya games!
K – game you’re most looking forward to?
at the moment it’s super mario odyssey and pokemon ultra sun and moon! and, uh… my inner 12 year old is rearing her ugly head to force me to admit i’m also pretty hyped for sonic forces, oops. lOOK IT LOOKS FUN, OKAY…
i’m looking forward to fe musou too but also i’m pretty neutral on it– everything they’ve revealed has been super incredible so far and i’m looking forward to maining my birb, but i’m more interested in the confirmed fe16 and i’m looking forward to hearing more about that when the time comes.
R – most underrated game?
hmmmm… while xenoblade chronicles itself would certainly fit the bill despite shulk being a giant meme now, i think i’ll take it a step further and go on to say xenoblade chronicles x deserves a bit more love than it got–
despite the very real flaws with the game and some aspects of the story, a thing that draws me to it aside from the ‘if you can see it, you can go to it’ MASSIVE open world and setting on a foreign planet was just how human its supporting cast and even minor npcs are. the game does an excellent job of portraying raw humanity in both ends of the spectrum– where there are heroes, there are people even in man’s most desperate hour that took that second chance as an excuse to be horrible, horrible people. the encounter of alien life goes as swimmingly as you expect, with the remaining fragments of humanity split on how to deal with these new beings in their midst. some choose to try and form alliances and bonds, the others shun and fear the outsiders– many quests actually revolve around the racism in what’s supposed to be a safe haven for the aliens pledging themselves to humanity’s side. the conflict taking up the last leg of the game is one born of human grief and the sting of loss– and when you really get into the motivations behind it it’s so easy to understand why the person did what they did but also acknowledge yeah no you did bad buddy you gotta pay for it now. i just???? it’s so good????
the planet and creatures that make up the game’s setting are imaginative and beautiful, i honestly love just booting it up and wandering. sometimes it’s scary as all heck because OH GOD GIANT MONSTER OUT OF NOWHERE but also… that just adds to the immersion and feeling like you’re a tiny fish in a big, big sea… and when you’re strong enough to stand up to those monsters it’s the most satisfying thing in the world.
the musical direction is honestly up to taste- i personally adore xcx’s soundtrack, but those not a huge fan of hiroyuki sawano’s works might find it lacking. here’s a personal favourite!
point is, it’s super fun, i want to do an araceli run sometime if i can ever be arsed to go back on my wii u or it gets a switch port, and a verse would be fun to play around with… i’m not a huge jrpg person, but i really really like xcx. also, fans of matthew mercer– he’s in this one, too! he plays lao huang, one of my all time favourite characters tbh
point is it is flawed, yes, but it’s also a very solid jrpg that i had fun sinking hours into and i’d totally do so again
A – favourite game of all time?
my top fave game of all time? easy! it’s the legend of zelda: wind waker!
it wins in both nostalgia points and a critical eye as i’ve gotten older– as a little kid, it was the first game i ever actually beat all by myself! the gamecube was the first home console i ever got to own– for a while i lived with my granny, who wasn’t very big on gaming if that makes sense? and then after moving back in with my mom she got me one for christmas and a friend lent me wind waker after i tried playing it at his house and repeatedly got stuck in the forsaken fortress. the excitement of finally making it past that and seeing this big, bright, beautiful world and story unfold before me has stuck with me to this day?? idk how to explain it i just. wind waker was an important game in my childhood, and i’ve played through it a loooooot– mostly i’ve noticed it was during times of stress or particular loneliness. everyone has that one game that’s been there™ for them during times of duress, and wind waker has always been mine.
okay i’m read more-ing the rest of this because i… went on for a WHILE. which is also why i answered it last oops. tl;dr there are many reasons why i love this game and it’s still my fave even now that i’m nearly 23.
as an adult, i’ve found that from a technical standpoint the game holds up really well, too– even without the hd remake on the wii u wind waker is still a very beautiful, stylistic game; a major benefit to having taken the art in a more cartoony direction is that it prevents the game from aging too much; if you were to look at the vanilla gamecube edition now, it still holds up amazingly! (meanwhile, i find that while twilight princess is still lovely, the more realistic art direction tends to date it a little. i could look at the original and just know the era it was made in, whereas if i never saw wind waker before, i would question it.)
the textures are rather blurry, sure, but that was a product of the time– hypatia on tumblr actually produced a mod with hd textures for roms of the gamecube version– check out these comparasion shots of the then-work in progress mod versus the original textures… and then here’s a few polished shots of the mod with a few extra effects dolphin/ishiiruka can provide. in short, the original wind waker is a very, very beautiful game and age has done very little to tarnish that even with the remake’s updated graphics.
but obviously graphics don’t make or break a game, though proper presentation is important– wind waker’s story also resonates with me deeply in various aspects. as an older sister, the initial quest to set out and rescue your younger sibling in danger caught my attention and held it fast; they do a very good job of making you feel attached to aryll, and the scene where she is kidnapped always tugs at my heartstrings every time i see it. watching this young boy who lived the world’s most quiet little life on a tiny island suddenly get swept up into this grand, big adventure to rescue someone dear to him and becoming an actual hero – despite having no relation to oot link whatsoever! – is the quintessential coming of age story that most people can relate to, and watching that change as the game plays out is always really sweet???
it was nice watching link’s development through his little actions: the backing away from helmaroc king when he first storms the fortress and then confident staring it down the second time and then giving it what for– aside from ganondorf himself that’s my favourite boss in the game if only because of those moments of development. link’s not just some kid from outset in over his head anymore– he’s a hero who overcame the trials of the goddesses himself in the name of protecting his baby sister, and he will not fail again. and then, after he could easily just throw in the towel and take his sister home because he accomplished what he set out to do, link goes on and sees it through to the end anyways because restoring order to the world is the right thing to do– there’s no legacy of knights looming over his head like several of his other incarnations. there’s no grand kingdom, there are only desolate little islands. there’s a princess, but… he barely knows her. hell, she didn’t even know she was a princess until that moment.
the story also touches on themes of death and the ends of eras… but also ends on a note of hope and new beginnings– clinging to the past only leads to ruin, and we must create opportunities for ourselves and the world to grow. hyrule is actually completely washed away by the end, and ganondorf goes with it– unless we assume breath of the wild is in the adult timeline, that’s it. he’s gone FOREVER in the subsequent games, with bellum and malledeus taking his place as the main villain. the kingdom link and tetra found is called new hyrule, but that’s all they share in significance– it’s their own land, just like the king said. that final scene of wind waker with the king always got to me– that message of hope is so poignant and powerful, i just. i don’t know how to put it into words, but it’s a scene i love dearly.
then there’s the music and cast of characters, and even quests and gameplay? i know the sailing could get tedious but i always liked it; it was relaxing to me just watching the virtual waves and listening to that beautiful score?? the characters are all bright and unique and fun– they’ve got their own little lives and you can impact them in so many different ways and things definitely change once you do?? like starting windfall vs windfall after you do a few sidequests or even turn on the ferris wheel and lighthouse again feel so different? it’s a neat little detail i’ve always found!!
…i really need to stop rambling about wind waker now i actually dozed off a bit typing this post, oops.

Spoilers through the rescue mission, plus some nexus stuff.
Tumblr media
So first off, first major crash of the game was right after Jaal joined up. The cutscene ended and the game went into an infinite load. Ended up having to reload and skipped through the dialogue and it got past it fine that time. So that was fun.
Tumblr media
I would LOVE to know how my crew would’ve handled meeting with the new species differently. I think I did pretty damn well, considering! Maybe just chill okay. (She also totally handled the scary rock alien guy stopping their ship with professionalism and no mocking at all, nope.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went to the jungle planet first, to get some more scientists. It’s my favorite so far with how pretty it is.
Jaal met me at the place we were going and then was snarky about offering help and getting turned down. My dude. I did not turn you down. I just keep forgetting to go through all of the tabs before confirming my loadout when going on missions and got who was there last time.
I wish there was at least a tiny bit more reaction about possibly finding the turian ark? They noticed Vetra was with me when they were describing the aliens, but Vetra just seemed surprised for half a second. (I was tempted to bring her to the ice planet to see if she was as big a baby as Garrus was about the cold, but I also didn’t want to kill my future girlfriend so I took Drax instead. Who mocked the squishies for need a heat lamp, because he’s a jerk.)
Tumblr media
I could’ve taken this whole scene so much more seriously if Gizmo wasn’t hanging out in the background through the whole thing. (Also Cora announced that he was apparently hiding in her helmet which is pretty damn impressive considering he’s freaking huge!)
Tumblr media
So apparently we’re doing banshees and marauders and human reapers oh my again? I liked the entire mission and the slow reveal from searching through the rooms, even if it does seem a repeat of the reapers’ general method with some religion thrown in.
Tumblr media
I rescued the important lady, who is not best pleased with me because I chose to get people out over destroying the base. I know in game logic it’s probably going to be a terrible idea, but in real life logic I agree with Jaal. You can blow the base up later, you can’t unkill a bunch of people. I did however take my first interrupt and killed whatsherface because there’s zero reason Ryder would’ve let her go after everything.
I did die like four times in the cardinal fight though. It’s much easier in multiplayer when everyone knows you’re supposed to shoot the ball thingy. The evacuation fight was much easier, though likely just because it evaced right as the other two giant thingies were about to attack.
Other random things:
Tumblr media
Suvi is adorable. Since the options seemed to be agree or mock, I’ve decided my Ryder is at least a little religious as well, though the details are vague. If nothing else, it’s a change from Lalla Shepard who wasn’t religious as all, she just enjoyed hearing other people talk about theirs. I like that she has comments on the previous missions, even if I feel like I accidentally kill her optimism a lot.
Tumblr media
Almost all of Kallo’s conversations have been fighting with Gil. If the two of them don’t make out soon, or whatever salarians do, I am going to toss them out an airlock. Either that or I’m gonna try hooking him and the annoying dude on the nexus up.
Tumblr media
The top secret Normandy plans are apparently the worst kept secret in the entire universe.
The cultural center was hysterical tbh. So much bullshit, so little time. Yes, white dude, please tell me all about the cultural diversity of Earth that is totally celebrated peacefully. Yes salarians, tell me how great it is when you help lesser species evolve. Yes, world’s wussiest krogan, rationalize how scary looking your species is to people who might be horrifying abominations for all you know. I made the pathfinder AI give career advice, which made Ryder sarcastically ask how to be a pathfinder which was pretty great.
I am shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that there was a virus on that flash drive! Who could have predicted? I’m also super shocked that there’s people who aren’t on board with the illegal AI running everything. Also finding out from Drax’s conversation, it sounds like dad working on AI fucked over Ryder’s career. No wonder she’s not super thrilled with him. I unlocked another memory but having gotten back to the Nexus to view it yet.
Cora seems to like me again, so I think after we drop off important lady, I’ll go to her loyalty mission and catch up on some sidequests while we’re there.

17, 25, 42, 49?
17. Your favorite theme song from the seriesaaaaah there’s TOO many! i love most of the songs from the series! so i’m gonna mention one from a game that’s honestly underrated in my opinion, which is the Spirit Tracks Realm Overworld theme i just adored traveling on my train and listening to that song, it’s so nice! spirit tracks needs more love
25. What is your favorite & least favorite sidequest? let’s start with LEAST favorite: collecting those god damn poes in twilight princess like UGH and the reward you get isn’t that great either? idk i thought it was a waste of my time tbh lmao i did it once and i’ve never done it again, seriously fuck those poes and fuck that dude who got turned into gold fuck himand now FAVORITE: i loved doing the gratitude crystal ones in skyward sword!!! they were all so unique and i felt SO GOOD afterwards! like i legit felt like a good person after completing one ;; it was so nice! i can’t remember the demon guy’s name since it’s been a while since i played SS but helping him made me so happy, he was so nice! and getting link’s friends together was also A+
42. Your favorite in-game quote?lmao there’s so many, don’t do this to me... but i suppose my favorite is:“"While it's true that I am Hylia reborn, I'm still my father's daughter and your friend...I'm still your Zelda.”
49. What art style has been your favorite or you would like to see in future games?forever a fan of wind waker’s art style! specially how it looks in the wind waker HD remake! skyward sword’s was also very nice? i love how botw is kind of a mixture of the two so i was sold on it the moment i saw it omfg i just love bright colors lmao i loved twilight princess but so much shadows and darkness was kinda too much for me tbh

so I actually finished fe echoes shadows of valentia after *checks back through blog* about one and a half years. or rather, I got totally fed up on my first playthrough and restarted a few days ago bc I was sick of having it semi-complete. I have Thoughts so... under the cut
might as well get the technical stuff out the way.
loved the artstyle. but the ui fucking sucked. all the important numbers and stuff is WAAAAAY too small to make room for character portraits and the layout of a lot of options is just... weird. oh and there’s no way to look at a zoomed out map and it’s a pain in the arse when I just wanna check where the fucking enemies are.
combat system is... definitely interesting for a fire emblem game. I enjoyed it overall, but it felt a bit lopsided. no weapon durability (yay), no weapon triangle (eh), magic users learn spells in character specific orders (hm), 90% of bow using enemies can’t do shit against fliers (wtf?), absurdly high crit rates (ugh)... lance users ended up near useless by endgame. I had a single one who could hit hard enough to take down an act 5 enemy, and he was too slow to chase them. meanwhile I could keep my archers back way out of enemies’ range and crit them, or field my many mages who could do massive damage AND heal each other constantly. srsly, all hail our lady and saviour delthea, who by the final boss had 30 atk and could oneshot almost every enemy with her lowest level spell. she is the best, and I love her very much.
there was a lot of other fidgety stuff especially on the overworld that really got on my nerves after a while. I’ve never been fond of the point hopping system that’s fairly common in tactical rpgs, but echoes has the infuriating variation that forces u to fight every respawning enemy u cross. fuck those graveyards. fuck them to hell. especially fuck them when I have to pass them so often to complete sidequests in the villages and such. but at least dungeon exploring is still fun. well, I say that, and it leads into another bother.
fates, the previous fe game, did a lot to improve the experience of casual players such as myself. the protagonist being allowed to fall in battle without an insta game over, for example. phoenix mode was nice for replays too, tho since echoes was preeeeetty linear that’s a moot point for me. echoes decides no, actually, fuck that, and also fuck the battle saves introduced in awakening. ur gonna work through duma’s tower for an hour with no way to save and reload and if one of the ten million enemies in there knocks down celica ur losing all ur progress without even a chance to use the in-universe save scum device. bc fuck u.
incidentally, duma’s tower is where I quit during my first playthrough.
buuuuuuuut there’s more to games than mechanics. there’s story too! and... hoo boy. there’s two major sticking points for me that ultimately make it a disappointment. spoilers ahead for literally the entire game.
number one: the broken aesop of alm’s arc. ie, fernand was right.
so, fire emblem games have a lot of birth destiny and divine rights to rule and all that jazz. while it can be just a background fact of life (awakening and imo path of radiance fell into this) or a major problem that causes protagonist centred morality out the whazoo (Y HALLO THAR FATES’ CONQUEST ROUTE), echoes tries to go a different route, especially in the first act. alm butts up against those who don’t think he should be allowed to be a knight, let alone lead an army bc he’s of common birth. even those on his side (*cough*clive) struggle to hold noble and common life of equal worth. but here’s alm, the poster child of destiny caring not for trivialities such as parentage. he’s a good fighter and a good leader, and proves that even a commoner can become a hero!
except they can’t. alm isn’t a commoner. he’s a prince. he could never vanquish duma if he hadn’t noble blood in his veins, bc the falchion is locked in a vault only royals can enter, and is a sword only he can wield. were he truly a commoner, he would have failed. and all this would’ve been easily forgotten fridge logic if the characters hadn’t kept bringing the even a commoner bs all the way with them until he found out who his dad was! fernand, the primary voice for this shit, doesn’t die until after seeing alm revealed!
frankly, alm being a lost prince was purely a detriment to the story. oh no, he killed his dad? who fucking cares. blood is the only thing they share. I’ve seen this dude like twice before I cheesed his ass by warping my best units up to his section of wall and zapping him. half his dialogue is only available post-patricide. alm had more of a connection to Asshole Cousin Berkut that to him. also, his plan for preparing for the end of the world as is stood was one of the worst I’ve ever seen.
but there’s also a more fun point. number two: the straight agenda!
ugggggh. listen. on my first round through, I joked a lot abt all the unrequited love going around. and honestly there’s quite a lot of interactions that I found genuinely nice. faye and leon being open about their feelings and accepting they aren’t requited, and alm and valbar being honest and comfortable with that. or delthea mentioning her crush on clive to his sister and having mathilda immediately pointed out. or like, clive and mathilda’s entire relationship during the game. I like me a lovey dovey battle couple.
but then the epilogue slides hit. why the fuck would mathilda become a Good Housewife(TM) after marrying a man who encouraged her as they fought alongside each other. delthea gets the same treatment and settles down with an unnamed husband and becomes “normal” in her slide. then u have mae and boey who get married and have children and argue AND THAT IS IT. like guys, I like me some rivals to lovers as much as the next lesbian, but u can’t be said to have kids that give u more reasons to fight and have me believe this is any way healthy. please find a replacement for celica bc u do NOT work together on ur own. *sigh* at least clair and gray have a nice marriage where they’re both free to be themselves. in my game anyway, idk if she hooks up with tobin if they get higher support, but when he’s an archer and she’s a frontline fighter, they never had a chance.
and then there’s alm and celica.
I could’ve liked alm. I really could. while his base is still Default Fantasy Hero, I like his comments when u examine things, I like that he has the nerve to stand up to clive when he’s on his bullshit. but dude. u met ur fake cousin celica briefly when u were kids, got along well, then obsessed abt her for like a decade. get. over. it.
same to u celica. u were fucked in my eyes from the beginning bc I find devout characters actively dull, but come on. u made a friend who had a birthmark like urs. as far as ur concerned, that’s all. stop reading the script and try learning the politics of running that kingdom ur set to inherit.
beyond the “alm...” “celica...” wistful calls, and the forces of destiny/the writers, I could not tell u what draws these characters together. the one time they’re not staring into the middle distance at each other, they’re in a petty fight that makes celica look like a spoiled child (and keeps her there until after she sells her fucking soul to the shadiest guy in the fucking universe? celica. celica cmon.) like why do these people like each other. with as much as destiny pulled them together rather than human connection, they may as well have been siblings instead.
on my first run, I genuinely thought that was where they were headed. I got given “alm can lift royal sword” and “celica ‘lost’ brother in fire” and put together that OH! they’re brother and sister! like mila and duma! bc it’s history repeating itself! and then conrad showed up and I was confused. also, iirc alm genuinely believed celica was a cousin of his while they were interacting as kids and didn’t learn she was just in Fantasy Witness Protection until later, so for that to turn into poorly telegraphed romance is just... ew.
anyway. at least most of the characters were good. can’t even pick a favourite tbh. I like clair a lot, and tobin and gray. mae and delthea are both fun and adorable. the valbar/leon/kamui trio are great and chill dudes. I even like silque despite being the nun type, bc she just tries so hard and I appreciate that. oh and sonya’s very lovely with genny and DESERVED BETTER THAN BECOMING A LITERAL SOULLESS HUSK IN THE EPILOGUE AS SHE TRIES TO HELP OTHERS, FUCK U ECHOES.
also there are definite immersion hiccups. oh, the land’s barren and we’re facing famine, huh? *stares at trees full of oranges* *stares at wells full of water* *stares at baskets full of fish* *stares at inventory full of meat and vegetables* *stares at knife that can produce food if I kill an enemy with it...*
wait. I turned a lot of enemies into food with that knife. like my inventory for celica’s army filled up with it. was... was I eating people the whole time?! D:
anyway, fe15, 7.5/10 too much swamp
