It’s 11:45 PM, New Year’s Eve, fifteen minutes before the start of the new year. You leave your family gathered downstairs to head up to your room, shutting the door quietly, tapping your boyfriend’s contact on your phone screen.

Your boyfriend lets out a nervous chuckle, muttering a quick, “Happy New Year.” There’s more rustling, then sounds of steps going up stairs, ending with a gentle thud of a door closing. “Sweetie? You still there?” he asks, finally alone.

“Yeah, I’m here.” You smile into the phone, sitting at the edge of the bed. “Hi.”

“Hi,” he greets back. “It’s so nice hearing your voice.”

“I feel the same way,” you reply, falling back into the mattress, gazing up at the ceiling. “How was tonight?”

“Oh, you know, the usual: My mom cooked too much food for three people and my dad has been sneaking little jabs at me. Nothing new.”

Eren officially changed his major before the end of the semester from pre-med to education, a huge weight lifted off his shoulders while a tinier one replaces it, aka his father’s overall disapproval. Dr. Jaeger stood by his word, threatening that he would no longer support his son financially once he made the switch, to which Eren has been preparing for. He has two new on-campus jobs lined up for him at the start of the new semester, along with the weekly music session at the elementary school Erwin Smith’s dad works at. The first week of winter break, he was ready to apply for a few loans to help him throughout the rest of his term. Then, to his shock, his father approached him, informing him that he will actually continue to pay for his education, on the condition that he graduates with outstanding grades and a job guaranteed. Eren’s sure it was his mother who was behind the change in heart, to which he’ll forever be grateful for. Unfortunately, this hasn’t stopped his father from making snide remarks here and there.

You sympathize with him, saying, “I’m sorry.”

His charming grin is audible through the phone. “Don’t be. I can handle it.”

“Where’s Mikasa? And your brother?”

“Mikasa left this morning to spend the rest of break with Jean. And Zeke had to head back to prepare for some conference, so he’s actually in your neck of the woods right now,” he answers, referring to your hometown and current location: Marley. He adds, “To be honest, I wish I was there too.”

You smile, kicking your feet, belly fluttering with butterflies. “We’ll see each other in a week. Do you really miss me that much?” you tease.

“More than anything.”

Swallowing hard, sentimental words dancing on the tip of your tongue (I miss you too, I think about you every day), you remain silent, too shy to get them out. Instead, he continues speaking, changing the subject to talk about what his mom prepared and the new year traditions behind them. She decided to do a spread of German foods this time around: pork sausages for good luck, sauerkraut for more money, and lentil soup for even better luck. He tells you about his childhood, popping open apple cider to tip into everyone’s glasses, watching the fireworks light up the sky from a distance, igniting sparklers outside with Armin, Mikasa, and the other neighborhood kids on the street. You listen to him intently, imagining a young Eren with that same signature bright smile he dons as an adult; warm, genuine, full of light. It’s no wonder you fell for him, especially in a time of your life where you were shrouded in darkness from the fallout of your heartbreak, unsure when you’d ever see sunshine again.

I love you. Every time you think it, you double back, convincing yourself that it’s too soon, too much in such a short amount of time. After all, it’s only been a little over a month since the two of you officially became a couple. Wouldn’t it be crazy to express such a weighted confession?

When there’s a small pause in the conversation, finished with his stories, you start, “Eren,” ready to admit it.

“Oh, it’s already 11:59!” he interjects, excited. “How many seconds do we have left?”

You turn on the TV, switching to a local channel that’s displaying a countdown. “Ah, ten seconds!” You watch the clock, listening to Eren announce the numbers in your ear. At three, you join in. “3…2…1…Happy New Year!”

Downstairs, you hear your family cheering, clinking flutes of champagne or cider with each other. The sound of fireworks bursting can be heard faintly through your window. On the opposite end of the line, Eren says, “Happy New Year, beautiful. Wish I could kiss you right now.”

You smile. “Me too.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to join your family downstairs?” he asks.

“Positive. I want to start the new year with you.”

He laughs softly. “Me too. And you know what? For the first time in a long time, I’m actually excited about the new year. I used to dread going back, always so anxious about my new classes. All the tests and projects I had to work on during the semester. Even interacting with my classmates because it was always so competitive. Now, my new curriculum sounds interesting, and I feel good about my cohort. I just know this year is going to be a great one.” He pauses, choosing his next statement carefully. “I’m also looking forward to us. We’ve got all the time in the world now. I can’t wait to create so many more memories with you.”

Your heart beats faster, taken back by his sincerity. You decide not to confess to him tonight, not because you’re unsure, but because you mean it more. Those three words don’t seem enough to express that to him. Not yet at least. There’s no pressure to rush into anything; as he said, you’ve got all the time in the world.

Spring semester of sophomore year starts off smoothly, especially for Eren. This is the only time during his collegiate career that he’s felt at ease. While he’s equally as diligent as he was before, he enjoys the material he’s learning, rather than stressing each passing day like he once was. She and him will exchange a cordial head nod, polite wave, sometimes a reminiscent smile, but nothing more. Acknowledging each other’s presence, understanding there’s no more left to their story. A fleeting moment of reminiscence about their past life together, gone as soon as it appears. During these times, Reiner will flash a serious glance at Eren. Despite his father agreeing to continue the payment of his tuition, Eren decided to work at least one part-time job this semester to supplement date nights or gifts for his girlfriend. His job is being the front desk of the school library, helping students locate resources or manage the study rooms. For the most part, his schedule is manageable. However, when the week of midterms arrives, it gets a little more complicated. The facility remains open twenty-four hours on weeks like this so students have a place to study at all times. Driven by the increased pay during the night shifts, Eren offers to work them without thinking how it’ll affect his daily routine. It’s only after the first night that he realizes he won’t be able to see his girlfriend until the week is over. With her being just as busy with group projects, there isn’t a time they have free to see each other. So, they settle for voicemails and text message spanning the next few days, which in Eren’s mind, pass by like weeks, maybe months. He misses her.

Finally, Friday comes, and exams are over. After his last class, he heads straight for his room, knocking out for a long nap. He wakes up to gentle tapping on his door. When he answers, he’s thrilled to see her, smiling brightly at him. “Hi.”

They two of you bond by baking together. You buy new cute molds and cookware together and set up entire spreads based on one theme.

Suguru was probably the first one to be in your life: I.E. the one that you agreed to date before realizing (and agreeing to) the package deal.

Red Dead Redemption 2 College AU !

I'm ignoring reqs for a bit to indulge in my own thoughts and ideas and write some hcs for my college au on what i think their majors/lives as students/professors would be like, ahem... Long post ahead. Also this isn't too well thought out as of now, just wrote down some fun thoughts. Plz tell me your own headcannons

Arthur Morgan - Fine Arts

THE MOST UNEXPECTED MAJOR FOR A GUY LIKE HIM. He's the guy who's seen around campus wearing leather jackets, riding his motorcycle, brooding over a cup of coffee while he stares off aimlessly into the sky. So imagine him walking into your visual arts class with some of the most beautiful drawings you've ever seen. Has his own apartment near campus and his roommate is Charles. Entire place is littered with sketches and art supplies and billions of projects. His hands are constantly stained with charcoal. Takes his major VERY seriously, he don't play about his drawings and paintings. Works at a college bar and constantly comes home with a new story. Frequently visits John and the others after joining the frat, especially when they have parties. Never misses out on those. Became friends with Lenny through these parties.

John Marston - Civil Engineering

Probably one of the most miserable engineering majors you'll ever see. And that's only because he doesn't stress out over his work and procrastinates like he hasn't a care in the world; seemingly forgets he's in college. That is until the deadline is 11:59 PM that night and he has to cram two weeks worth of assignments into one night. Complains about heart palpitations when the area surrounding his desk is littered with energy cans. Joined a fraternity as soon as possible and lives in the housing. Party animal, drinks on weekdays with Sean and Javier. Throws absolute ragers on the weekends. Is the guy to yell "IF YOU'RE NOT PART OF THIS FRAT, THEN GET THE FUCK OUT" before turning to you and asking if you had fun. Has missed his 9 AM several times because he either slept in or is hung over. Was probably community dick for a while. Works at McDonald's part time, people genuinely don't know how he handles the stress. 60% of his paycheck goes to liquor/alcohol.

Javier Escuella - Music Theory

PASSIONATE about his major. HE DON'T PLAY ABOUT HIS MUSIC. But I can totally see him as the type of dude to sit around on the campus lawn with a guitar as a group of girls surrounds him and listens to him play. Is in the frat with John and lives in it as well. Also plays his guitar at parties with girls surrounding him, starkly contrasting the EDM and house music in the background. Shows up to class regardless of hangovers, he is very serious about his education. As serious as he is about partying. Shows up to class fitted every single time. Probably has outfit changes between classes. Type of guy to have his fits laid out next to his bed. He does the most. Was also probably community dick. Works as a cook at a restaurant, constantly flirts with you there. Gets all giddy in the kitchen with his coworkers when he manages to make you giggle.

Charles Smith - Anthropology

It's him and his laptop against the world. He's super neat, everything in one place. Any papers he gets are all neatly kept away and categorized per class. Is hard at work on writing an ethnography and is frequently out and about for observations. If he's not out then he's at home working on assignments. Also a frat member but like I said, rooms with Arthur. Has gained the quiet serious type reputation in class but once you start talking to him discover he's very friendly and nice. Probably works on campus as a student ambassador. Is very involved with school and activities; runs an enviornmental sciences club. Dedicates several hours a night to studying/working on assignments. Amazing student all around. The way he has his life together is enviable.

Kieran Duffy - Equine Studies

LITERALLY PERFECT MAJOR FOR HIM. Literally the happiest student around, his classroom is the stables. Works at the stables as well. Just spends 99% of his time at the stables so catching him outside of there is nearly impossible. Gossips to the horses and tells them about his day. I feel like he'd fall behind in his other studies though because he'd be way too focused on the horses. Typical, struggling student. Joined a frat out of pressure, got the WORST of the hazing. I don't even want to begin to imagine what the rituals were like. Probably gets black out drunk at frat parties, ends up on the front lawn and wakes up half naked every weekend somehow.

Sean Macguire - Business Administration

He's just insufferable like that. Whenever people shit on his major he just finds a thousand bullshit reasons as to why his major is better and more lucrative. Complains to John how hard his homework is and when John asks to see his screen it's addition with pictures. Probably went to college to party and realized "oh shit I actually gotta do school". Googled the highest paying and easiest majors and chose it like that. Puts more thought into what beer he's going to buy at the liquor store than his studies. Hotboxes his car 24/7. His room REEKS of weed and so does he. Attempts to disguise it with ax body spray. Will always ask you if you want to wake and bake; regardless of if you do or don't accept he's showing up to class high and with sunglasses. Goes nonverbal when he greens out. Works at McDonald's with John, is constantly late and is warned he might get fired but never does. Just fucks around in the back. I can imagine he and Karen are constantly on and off but when they're off he brings a new girl home to the frat every night.

Lenny Summers - Literature Major

Joined the frat because he thought he'd make good connections (LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER). One of the youngest pledges, went easier on him with the hazing. He's incredibly focused on his studies. You'd be surprised to find out he's a party animal as well because he's constantly reading a book in his free time. Definitely joined a book club with Mary-Beth and is taking Dutch's English class. Works on campus as well as the library; prides himself on his work and education. I believe he'd dorm because there's no way he's living in that filthy frat. Super organized dorm. Became really good friends with Arthur during one of the parties, also became close with Sean. Frequently gets driven around by Sean and gets second hand high from being in his car.

Bill Williamson - Army

Out of everyone he went to the army instead of college. But he definitely still hangs with the frat when he can simply because he's friends with a few of them. Frequently buys them liquor and supplies it to the younger members. Micah Bell - Criminal Law Major

Insufferable. Need I say more. Very money centric. Definitely thinks he's better than you because he's a law student. Kisses the professors’ ass all the time. Joins study groups and acts as if he's the smartest one there, tries to lead conversations, and views it as a challenge if anyone says differently than him during said discussions. He probably has an internship at a firm. Oh my god I can just imagine how sleazy he is. Also part of the frat and several of the members do not like him. Harasses the girls that show up. I can see him cutting off people during class or talking over them. Type of guy to say "not to be devil's advocate, but..."

Pearson - Culinary Degree

Came back to school to get his culinary degree. Mostly keeps to himself but has become acquainted with a few people and is actually decent friends with some. Pretty serious about his studies but is also chill, you can just tell he's extremely passionate about what he does. Excuses himself from hangouts by saying "sorry I got a pie due at 3." Loves it when he's able to sell some of his products back to students/general public and see how people react. Dreams of opening his own restaurant so he takes the accounting/marketing aspects of his degree very seriously.

Abigail Roberts - Education Major

I CAN JUST SEE IT YK. I can totally see her being a teacher, and she's super hardworking. I feel like her schedule is jam packed so she hardly ever has time for fun. Studies, does homework, student teaching, and takes care of herself and her son. So yeah imagine how busy she is all the time. Occasionally leaves Jack with his grandparents for a night of fun but that is few and far in between. Joined a sorority for support but wouldn't live in the house. Lives in the same complex as Arthur and they get along, sometimes he offers to babysit Jack. Drops off food for her when she's real busy with her studies. NEVER late to class. And besides handling ALL THIS, she'd work as a waitress at a restaurant by campus. Talk about hard working.

Sadie Adler - Agricultural Sciences

Definitely moved to live on campus from a rural town to pursue her degree. Joined the sorority early on but dorms. Suffered a breakup and found solace in the community the girls provided. Works at a local supermarket and volunteers at a community garden nearby. Her dorm is full of potted plants. Became really good friends with Arthur through Abigail, who has her over at times. I feel like she'd be asked on dates frequently but she always turns em down because she's still struggling to accept her breakup. I'm not making it a death because this AU isn't that BRUTAL. Argues with the boys often. Pearson frequents the supermarket she works at and she always makes a comment on the strange ingredients he buys. Thus leading to a weird tense air between them that they never directly address. Enjoys her coursework and never falls behind. She's on top of that shit. Also very outspoken in class.

Karen Jones - Biological Sciences

PREMED BABYYYY. On the path to becoming a nurse. She procrastinates a lot, is often late to class, BEGS her professors for extensions. Truth is she's a party girl and she will NEVER give up that party life. Constantly at several different frat parties, gets black out drunk on Saturdays, and on Sundays she's studying for her bio exam on Monday. Complains to her sorority sisters about boys, particularly Sean, to the point where they all HATE any man she gets involved with. And the next time they see Sean in public they're all glaring DAGGERS at him. Parties aside she does her work even if she puts it off... Her grades are decent, definitely passing, but everyone tells her she's gonna need to do better if she wants to go to med school. I can see her working at a retail store like Walgreens. Most miserable cashier you'll ever see. Probably lets you walk out with your items for free if she's particularly pissed off at work that day.

Tilly Jackson - Physics Major

SHE IS A SMART GIRL. One of the most hardworking on this list. Her grades are top notch and she don't play about studying. I can see her offering tutoring for math and even getting paid for it. She is not one to be underestimated when it comes to her academic abilities. Occasionally parties (aka gets dragged along by Karen) and enjoys herself, but I can't see her being a major party animal. Offers Karen lots of advice as well as helping the girls with math assignments when they need it. Joins study groups as well as math clubs. Works at a cafe on campus where Mary-Beth and Lenny visit her occasionally. Generally well organized. Has her shit together.

Mary-Beth Gaskill - Literature Major

ALWAYS has her nose in a book. Becomes extremely engaged in class discussions and has probably read every single book required for the semester already. Works at a bookstore and frequents the campus library. Is on the chiller side of partying but still accompanies the girls. She's very reserved but can be quite friendly. Writes fanfiction in the back of class while her professors think she's just passionately writing a report. Always gets extensions from Dutch, always. Even when she doesn't need em. I can see her reading a lot of philosophy books. Also an Otessa Moshfegh fan. Colleen Hoover is her guilty pleasure. Runs a blog about the books she reads. I can also imagine her being part of the school paper. Real close with Lenny as well, often hangs out with him at the cafe Tilly works at.

Molly O'Shea - Cosmetology

Shows up to her 8 AM with a BEAT face. Full face of makeup, decked head to toe in designer: designer purse where she keeps her macbook, designer shoes, outfit, accessories, etc. Probably wears brands you've never even heard of. Has a crush on Dutch, only reason she has perfect attendance in his class. Has a grudge towards Mary-Beth. Dorms for sure, even though she'd be able to afford housing nearby. The only times she's at the dorm is in the morning getting ready for class or at night to sleep. Hardly talks to her roommate either, not even a hey. Gained the stuck up rich girl reputation from her peers. Seen at cafes in between classes and is always alone. Is out of town and has been struggling to make friends. Lots of guys ask her out on dates and she only accepts when she's bored and wants a free meal. WILL make y'all go to a steakhouse, WILL order the most expensive thing on the menu.

Dutch Van Der Linde - English/Philosophy Professor

This guy definitely speaks about philosophy with a PASSION. His class is very engaging, though I do believe he'd play favorites with a few female students... This goes for both classes. Constant open ended discussions. Type of professor to ask you "but what do the blue curtains mean...?" Hardass with assignments unless you're one of those favored female students. No late assignments with him ever. You either turn it in at the deadline or you don't ever. I feel like he'd forget to take attendance frequently despite being a hardass about that too. Probably the type of professor that tries to integrate himself with the student body and try to fit in. Mildly successful.

Hosea Matthews - Theatre Professor

THE SWEETEST, KINDEST, MOST COMPASSIONATE PROFESSOR. ALWAYS excuses late assignments and very lenient, will not deduce points. His class is very fun and engaging as well! Does what Dutch tries to do and makes genuine connections with his students while keeping it professional. Tells his students they can always talk to him and come for advice. Frequently has lunch with Dutch and Susan and talks up just how great his classes are. Frequents the library and local bookstores; also goes to the cafe Tilly works at. I also feel like a lot of his relationships would have a fatherly air around them, like he's a second dad for a few of the students (we know who...).

Leopold Strauss - Business Professor

YOU CANNOT TELL ME HE WOULDN'T UGH. Probably a super boring class I'm not gonna lie. His accent would probably make it hard for some students to understand what he's saying, not to mention he probably speaks super softly and not loud enough for everyone to hear. He should've retired by now but he refuses to. There is no syllabus week with him, you got homework on the first day. But it's probably not even hard c'mon. Sean is probably the most lively thing about his class, but he's definitely falling asleep in there frequently. Always late to his own class, doesn't even say why, just gets into lecturing. NEVER seen without a cup of coffee. Sometimes there will be long moments of silence between lectures as he tries to figure out the technology. Falls asleep in his car after class.

Orville Swanson - Theology Professor

Also a super chill professor. He's probably super open to his classes about his struggles. He's able to facilitate well structured discussions and keep things civilized amongst his students. I feel like it could get boring because it's mostly lectures and slide shows but he'd still find a way to keep his students engaged, especially on discussions. I feel like he'd also be lenient about assignments, but his assignments would be rather large. Back to back papers. Type of professor to say hi to you in the halls or outside of campus and ask about your day. 10/10 guy.

Uncle - Biology Professor

How is he still working here. HOW hasn't he retired. WHY hasn't he retired. SOMEONE PLEASE make him retire. There are pros and cons. You will learn NOTHING in his class, so if you're unfortunate enough to land his class you better drop that shit as soon as possible. If you for some reason stay, you must be some sort of masochist. Probably has the best stories. As soon as you think he's about to start lecturing he goes on a tangent about a story that happened to him the other day. He has weekly tests and you might as well teach yourself the material because his ass definitely isn't doing it. Also has plenty of labs so he can leave you all to your own devices amongst each other while he sits at his desk and does who knows what. You can probably find him sleeping in a student lounge at any time of the day. Also the frat guys have definitely run into him at the liquor store.

Susan Grimshaw - History Professor/Sorority Mother

She's hard on you but only because she cares. Isn't very lenient when it comes to assignments but she's involved with her students. If she sees you struggling she'll pull you aside and ask what's up and figure out a plan to help you out in her class. Likes to remind her students she isn't their mommy but has a very motherly air surrounding her. And she is VERY on top of her girls. As a sorority mother, she makes sure they eat well, stay on top of studies, and deals with parents. Encourages the girls to keep up the general cleanliness of the house and tells them to work as a unit. Extremely proud of each of them.

FAMILY HISTORY: Sky was born in a family of farmers. He gets along with his family for the most part but it was rough when his mother died when he was very young. Being the middle child, he had it the toughest. His mother was his rock, the person in the family that paid him mind when no one did. And when she passed away, Sky felt the true meaning of being alone. He has been alone and lonely since then even with his father and siblings being around. The one thing that got him going was their father motivating them, telling them that their mother would want them to graduate college and have a bright future in spite of what they faced. Sky finished high school and worked hard to get into a well-respected college in Bangkok. His father supported their dreams, working hard to pay for college, so Sky focused and succeeded graduating with honors.

PAST LIFE: Sky was a reincarnation of a young man who lived more than 200 years ago somewhere in Europe. He was from a simple family who lost his loving mother very early on. When I say Ollie is a genius I mean that literally. He has an IQ score of 169 which is higher than people like Stephen Hawking and Einstein. He’s been a member of Mensa since he was a freshman in High School, though he doesn’t really like to talk about it too much.

He graduated High School early, and started college when he was only 17.

The first time he tried drugs he was 13, and he hasn’t been sober since he was about 14 years old. He’s not looking to get sober either, lest he have to deal with all the trauma and strain he’s put himself through (emotionally, mentally, and physically) because of his drug habits.

He is extremely good at ... people. He’s just good at getting others to like him. He is so very charismatic and disarming, and tends to be more laid back and easy going. So, he is pretty well liked. But he can be a lot to handle, loves to make things awkward, and comes across as erratic at times so probably not everyone likes him.

He sells test answers and essays to people, regularly. Some of it he does himself (what he’s able to do), some of it he hacks the answers to and such. He has both regular customers, and some who just need some help, so don’t feel afraid to ask. It can get pretty expensive depending on what you’re looking for though. A man’s gotta make a living.

He also sells drugs, but he sells drugs for Monty. So if you buy from Ollie you’re buying from Monty. Just consider him to be working the register, not running anything. He’ll just give his own drugs away if he likes you though. It’s a love language.

Ollie isn’t completely sure what he wants to do after finishing his undergrad studies. He’s planning on continuing into getting his Masters in Computer Science, but where that happens is still in the air really. He might stay at Ogden he might go to a STEM focused school, he might just burn out and not do that at all. Who knows.

GO by Isao Yukisada

The movie "GO," directed by Isao Yukisada and released in 2001, depicts the protagonist Sugihara, who is of North Korean descent in Japan, and those around him. It is easy to imagine that Japan's impression of North Korea, South Korea, and China wasn't as favorable twenty years ago as it is now. While our generation and even younger ones may have a better understanding of each other, that bias has not entirely disappeared. Even today, there are still many people, particularly among the older generations like Sakurai's father in the film, who do not hold favorable impressions solely based on someone's nationality. This sentiment is not one-sided among just the Japanese; people from those countries may also feel similarly. Whether it's Sugihara's father changing his nationality to South Korean to make life easier for his son in Japan, his estranged brother as a result, or Sakurai's reaction upon learning about Sugihara's background, the film vividly portrays the impressions and realities between Japan/Japanese people and its neighboring countries and people at the time.

As Sugihara says, people tend to label others despite nationality, race or anything not being the sole defining factor of a person. This tendency stems from a fear of the unknown and is influenced by historical backgrounds, among other factors. It often happens, both consciously and unconsciously, for people to conflate the residents of a country with its government and history due to the influence of education and media. As a Japanese living in America, I often find myself judged, positively or negatively, solely based on being Japanese or Asian. I sometimes feel the innocuous biases, discrimination, and people's indifference which I did not notice when I was part of the majority. Hence, lines of Sugihara or other characters like eliminating the national borders or the relationship between Sugihara and Sakurai, who deliberately avoid mentioning names, and the quote about the unchanged beauty of a flower despite its name changing, all resonate deeply. It is a great film that inspires me to take pride in myself regardless of name or title and to want to become stronger to the point where I can think that and interact with others with that mindset.

Also, the camera work, music, pauses, and narration give an overall impression reminiscent of anime or manga, which was very cool. Particularly, the way the opening credits were displayed and the use of colors, along with Sugihara and his father's duel scene, were incredibly stylish and gave a nice adrenaline rush. The frequent cuts during running scenes or when Sugihara speaks at length emphasized both energy and the drag of the narrative, akin to anime, which was excellent. The sudden quietness highlighting his concentration during the study, followed by the return of ambient sounds with a ringing phone, was also impactful.

The saddest part was the death of Sugihara's friend from his Korean school days, Jeong-il. Despite expecting his death from his lines hinting at wanting to talk next time or having something to say, it was heartbreaking because he was a nice guy. However, his last scene when his steadfast sense of justice, kindness, and strength, are shown by protecting a female Korean student and the scene when Sugihara made a decision not to resort to violence to avenge, deeply touched my heart.

Moreover, I love that the film beautifully captures the atmosphere of Japan from the early to mid-Heisei era. Not only the landscapes, characters' clothing, hairstyles, and makeup, but also the way they exchange contact information with paper or converse using a landline, sneaking into school at night, or walking only on the white lines—all of these elements made me nostalgic for my childhood. Being born in the Heisei era, I have a deep affection for it, but seeing these films and those who spent their youth during that time made me even more envious. The atmosphere and stories of Heisei are truly the best. And above all, Yosuke Kubozuka, who plays Sugihara, is just too cool. Kingggggggg. Kou Shibasaki, who plays Sakurai, is adorable too, and there are many other talented actors still active today, making the film exciting. While there are many humorous elements, the film delivers a solid message, making it one of my favorite movies.

This movie hit me right in the feels, and I would watch it again and again because venturing out of my comfort zone to see the wider world and grasp what truly matters, friendship and love transcend nationality or titles, acknowledge and take pride in oneself as is, and love important people for who they are, these are the beliefs that I have held for the past few years and I just rethought and reaffirmed.

Artificial Intelligence Story in Art: Denny Ja and New Painting Andy Warhol

Art is always a thing that always attracts public attention. There are many types of art, ranging from paintings, statues, literature, music, to films. However, in this article, we will discuss the painting that is now increasingly sophisticated. Artist Denny JA and his latest work that uses artificial intelligence technology to create new paintings Andy Warhol. Denny JA is a painting artist who has an technical education background. However, after a few years working as an engineer, he decided to focus on painting. Denny JA has created various works of art, including paintings, installations, and collages. However, his latest work that gets a lot of attention is a pop art -themed painting that is made with the help of artificial intelligence. This painting was inspired by Andy Warhol's famous by his unique painting style. Andy Warhol is a major artist from the United States who is widely known for his work focused on the theme of pop culture in the 1960s. His famous works are painting series especially Portrait Marilyn Monroe, Silkscreens from the Brillo Supply box, Coca Cola bottles and Campbell Soup Cans. Denny Ja uses artificial intelligence to study Warhol's works and develop painting techniques that are imitated very accurately by machines. He took a few examples of Warhol's work, scanned the pictures and put them in artificial intelligence software. Denny said that the artificial intelligence technology of a top data science company is able to produce a painting that is very similar to the original. He only sets a few parameters such as the basic color, image size, and type of brush to be used. When the software is finished processing the image and determines the color and brush to be used, the programmed machine starts to paint on the canvas. The machine uses a digital brush that is operated through a system that has been previously programmed so that it makes paintings with a very minimum error rate. The paintings produced by this machine are very similar to Warhol's original work. Denny said that artificial intelligence technology greatly helped him to imitate Warhol's painting style very accurately. This makes art work in more numbers than if he paints himself. On the other hand, artificial intelligence technology also helps Denny in terms of efficiency. The process of making paintings that usually takes weeks can now be completed within a few days. Denny said that this technology also allowed him to create art at another time, when he was not ready to paint by hand. However, the use of artificial intelligence in art also reaps pros and cons. Some artists oppose the use of the technology in art, because it is considered to damage the essence of art itself. However, Denny feels that artificial intelligence technology does not reduce the creativity of artists, but only helps an artist to create new works faster and more efficiently. In addition, artificial intelligence technology can also help artists to create more realistic works. In some cases, the programmed machine can process visual data using an algorithm so as to produce images that are very similar to the original. This of course helps artists to create more complex and realistic works. Overall, the use of artificial intelligence in Denny Ja's painting proves that this technology can improve the quality of art and efficiency in creating new work. I was struck by the description of Crowley in the latest Major Arcana chapter as the mage who had designed the entire 20th century - which I’m sure he would have found gratifying. Outside of fiction, do you think there is a serious case to be made for his direct influence as more than an articulation of the general spiritual flight inwards following the death of God and the advent of modernity?

I swiped the sentiment on behalf of Simon Magnus from the Art of Darkness podcast episode on Crowley, still my main source of Crowley information, along with Colin Wilson's The Occult: A History and Douglas Rushkoff's Aleister & Adolf graphic novel, though I did read The Book of the Law three times in the last month to write (or rather revise) that chapter. I think one of the pod hosts said, "It's Crowley's world, we're just living in it."

Crowley's worldview in general has gradually triumphed, all the more because it's been shorn by now of its gothic and "wicked" trappings and now presents itself to us as a sunny and cheerful matter of personal liberation, even at this point by medical professionals. You're right, though—and I'm not totally sure he'd object, since he did theorize the turning over of the Aeon even as he aggrandized himself—that this is part of a more general modernization process including figures either more prominent or more respectable than Crowley. Emerson or Mill or Nietzsche or Wilde or Jung or any number of others represent more superficially secular (or just less hokey) forms of the same radicalizing metaphysical individualism he did. The case for his direct design of later history, if a little conspiratorial, would rest on his putative assistance as both spy and meme warrior to the British state in the two World Wars, thus helping liberal capitalism to triumph over its collectivist enemies, and then, in continuity with this, his postwar influence on the Dionysian revels of popular music in the '60s and '70s, with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and more, which altered, among other things, the very way we live in our bodies.

(Novelists shouldn't explicate their own fiction, but that line, leaving aside its cogency as cultural criticism, has two purposes within the narrative. Psychologically, it reveals that Simon Magnus secretly feels inferior to the educated and tasteful Ellen Chandler, despite SM's coming from the superior class background to hers. Sociologically, it hints at another revolution than the one Crowley effected: the mid-to-late-20th-century rise of the educated class represented by Ellen Chandler over the old money elite to which SM belongs by blood. Just as Crowley's will-to-power helped to inspire English working-class artists thematically and aesthetically adjacent to my fictional Simon Magnus, such as The Beatles and Alan Moore, I figured he could also be made the ideological accomplice to the rise within popular culture of an out-caste member of the old and culturally dispossessed American elite. [I may have had Pynchon, with his Puritan background and occult interests, in mind.] Plus, aligning Crowley with SM's New England heritage in this way suggests the wicked mage's kinship with the radical cultural movements our own Puritanism inadvertently spawned, from Transcendentalism to the American Gothic, cf. Crowley's own background as the scion of wealthy merchants who were also Protestant fundamentalists.)

What is the Future of Film Criticism?

The lights dim. A quiet hush falls over the audience. Sodas swish, snacks crinkle, and you lean into the cool soft seat behind you. And then the intro music starts, as you are slowly lured into another world. It ends, you get up and leave, your mind swirling with thoughts, theories, ideas and lessons. You need to understand, you need to share this so others know what you know. That’s what being a film critic is about.

When movies first began to be widely shown in the early twentieth century, film critics did not look the same. We did not see what we consider to be formal film criticism until Frank E. Wood began to consistently publish his work in The New York Dramatic Mirror. After this, more and more joined the cause, like Andrew Sarris, Robert Ebert, and Judith Crist. Once we got to the nineteen thirties we began to see the idea of formal, trained and classical critics that reviewed for major newspapers take hold over other forms of review. This continued for decades until very recently with the birth of the internet allowing informal and online criticism to explode. After that, nothing was the same. Everyone was a critic, literally. People from any and every background and interest, education level and age, began to upload film reviews taking as long as five minutes and five hours. But this brings to mind the questions, if everyone's a critic, can anyone really be a good critic? And what does a good critic even mean any more? That is the hot debate happening all across the world of media entertainment.

You may be wondering, why does any of this matter? A study on YouGov.com says that movie watching is the second most popular social activity among all genders and ages. It ranks second only to listening to music. It’s a valued pastime in everyday life, and it touches every part of it. Many find their spouses and best friends through common interests that come from movies. Film and entertainment have brought people together as long as it has been around. And as with many things so important, there are those whose job it is to critically analyze it. We see this in politics, science, sports, and more. But lately, the way we critique films has changed quickly. Film critics are also incredibly important to the success of a film. More than most people realize. A study called ‘The Influence of Film Critics on Movie Outcomes’ supports this, saying “based on our results it appears that film critics serve as both influencers and predictors to some extent“. And this still works whether it be good reviews or bad. Film specifically will be my focus today, because the topic has never been more important than now. Whether this change is good or bad, we can try to find out.

According to an interview with Kynan Dias, a visiting lecturer at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who’s studies specialize in film studio system economics, grew up with classical film critics and witnessed the birth of the internet, we can view it from a kind perspective. “The audience is also creating things that take criticism to a whole new direction because it had been that in order to be a film reviewer you had to be someone with some kind of cache to them, usually a white man who would work their way up a newspaper”, he said. And indeed they are, with a quick YouTube search for film reviews showing thousands of works, merely in the past few months.

Many of these videos are getting hundreds of thousands to millions of views. The article ‘How YouTube and podcasts spurred the golden age of film criticism’ discusses this and says this “the rise of YouTube — along with the growing popularity of podcasts — has ushered in a golden age of film criticism, one that’s both broadened the audience for such criticism while also allowing critics to dive deeper into film than they ever have before” This sentiment is reiterated in another article called ‘The Film Critic in the Internet Era’. “Now, festival reports and reviews are common coin, especially online—and the buzz that movies generate at festivals far in advance of release (or even a distribution deal) is news in itself … the critics who are on hand to review the films at the festivals are helping to set the agenda”. We are seeing how critics are continuing to do their jobs in the fast paced modern world and have begun to take on a similar but new role in this world.

We used to know what this role was. Cut and clear, it was an educated white man who watched high class films in the theater and wrote out his thoughts in a newspaper sidebar. This is proven by the USAToday study, saying, “male reviewers outnumber female reviewers in every job title category” and “73% of male reviewers are white, 18% are men of color”. But that’s the past. And that past is long gone. Like Dias said “ legacy media outlets are declining with their ratings and readership but actually film criticism as we would say in the academic sense of analyzing films, putting things together from different aspects of film, putting things into context, reevaluating historical film and historical movements, that is really really taking off because of the power of the internet.” But the key to this explosion has been the kind of reviews we have seen, and the people who make them. The internet has given everyone the power of accessibility, credibility, and visibility. People of all backgrounds have a place for their reviews to be seen and be treated as equal. Of this change Dias says, “the internet is destroying the old legacy media but opening up criticism for everybody. So groups who hadn't been that before. Women, queer people, disabled and differently-abled people.” This rise in diverse reviews has also raised the moral standard for what is deemed acceptable in today’s films. Now we actually have the people who have repeatedly been hurt by Hollywood’s racism, sexism, homophobia and ableism speaking up and calling out films and filmmakers. Wonderful examples of that are Angelique Roche, Jaleesa Lashey, Michael Klemm, and Jenny Nicholson. “ The audience now has someone who is writing specifically for those communities.” Not only that, but the lack of formal training often found in these reviews can be its greatest strength. We see a humanity to these reviews that didn’t use to be there. Without the constraints of years of university and training in a newspaper, we are allowed to see a beautiful array of unique writing styles. In an article called ‘Movie critics: Pros and cons’ Jim Emerson said “I find these days that I'm more likely to find lively writing and original viewpoints on blogs than in print outlets”. Reviews can come from someone who has never written before. Mothers, teens, lifelong nerds, book writers and painters. It’s not just the diverse people like POC and disabled we are seeing. Those with every background are reviewing films with completely different perspectives. A good example is the YouTube channel by Bernadette Banner. She’s a historical seamstress who occasionally reviews films and shows on the clothes historical accuracy. That is all she does, consider the accuracy of the clothing. The Wired and GQ channels bring in doctors, archeologists, stunt men, artists and more to give their personal insight into reviewing films. This is what the modern era of criticism is all about. This is what makes it beautiful and what will continue to drive film criticism until the end of time.

But for all the good changes happening to film criticism, there is also bad. Notably, the amount of professional, classically trained film critics has massively decreased. This quickly changing landscape of voices is a good thing, but it is also a double edged sword. And this is something Dias and other film viewers like those on the subreddit ‘r/TrueFilm’ , a discussion thread on popular question and answer website Reddit.com have noticed in many YouTube reviews. “Every once in a while I'll watch a new filmmaker and they don't have the correct vocabulary. They mistake things, they'll say this is a pan when they mean it’s a tilt, things like that. That can throw me off and make me not want to listen to what they have to say” Dias says. Many in the industry have noticed this as well. Older more experienced critics like Charles Taylor in his article ‘The Problem with Film Criticism’ have mentioned their distaste for newer forms of criticism. You could call this a bitterness toward a perceived push to irrelevancy, but it’s not so simple. An article called ‘Binge and Purge: The Rise of Extreme Film Criticism’ notes this, saying, “The work of extreme film critics often appears in diary form, but it hardly reflects film culture as a personal vision. It is a frantic reaction to a changing status quo, dictated not by the idiosyncrasies of the critic but the oppressive sameness of our film culture” But even more so than this lack of polish, what I’m sure everyone has noticed is the intense politicization towards something that didn’t previously have that. Books, music, art and culture are constantly in discussion to see what is or isn’t politically correct. From a liberal standpoint, this is a mark of great progress. From a less literal view, it is not allowing anyone to enjoy things. From a filmmaking standpoint Dias says, “ people are criticizing ideology more than actual criticism…a lot of film criticism is now caught up in this really toxic ecosystem.” Now even art must be held to the highest of moral standards. This is something that has only increased with the newest generation, and will likely continue. Ignoring any flaws, some believe film criticism is simply no longer relevent. There are a variety of resources claiming this, like this collection of thoughts from Variety called ‘Are film critics really needed anymore?’ and a reddit thread dedicated to discussing this topic with not a lot of good things to say. “The popularity of review-aggregate sites Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic has devalued the long-form review, as has the “pivot-to-video” strategy adopted by so many mainstream media companies”

So, is this truly the golden age of film criticism? Only time can say. Film and its critics have always been reflective of the current climate. Now, we are more focused on change and progress than ever. Movements like Me Too, Black Lives Matter, March for Our Lives, and ACAB are influencing the world around us and thus the media we consume. Films themselves have exploded in creativity in the past decades with films like Avengers: Endgame, Boyhood, Get Out, Ready Player One, even animated films like Encanto and Into the Spiderverse. Theaters are dying, but streaming services are more popular than ever. Everyday a new piece of media comes out that is dissected, displayed and reviewed by hundreds of thousands. So here's what we know for sure. Film criticism is here to stay, in whatever form that may take. What is seen as ok won’t always be ok. Writers will write. Directors will direct. And the world will never stop making good movies.

At the moment, I'm gearing up to play on the spider at Glstonbury on the Arcadia stage and this is giving me so much inspiration right now just being like, finishing loads of tunes I'm playing back to back with Dimensions as well, so we're planning some specials for that.
