i’ve been trying to get a feel for what else the nerevarine dreams about besides the canonical ones, what voryn-as-dagoth-ur would seem like, what sorts of memories-as-dreams the nerevarine would end up having. other things that i haven’t really worked out at all, like what nerevar’s childhood would like, how he actually met some of the people who became important to him, etc. past life memories/dreams are convenient because if the truth ends up being completely different, well, it was just a dream...

scraps and nonsense:

In my dream, I was a child. I was running through the woods, chasing another boy. We were both laughing. Mushrooms interspersed the trees and I could see the glimmer of water in the distance. It seemed to be spring. The sun was warm but the air was still a little chilly. The other boy’s unbound dark hair streamed out behind him as he ran. He was faster than I was. I shoved my own pale hair out of my face and tried to catch him, but my foot caught on a tree root and before I knew what was happening, I was skidding on my face in the remains of last year’s leaves. 

Hearing me cry out as I fell, he stopped immediately and came back to me, helping me sit back up again and brushing some of the leaves off of me. The sun filtered through the branches and fell on his face. He was pale and his eyes were grey with a purple tinge, like storm clouds. He hooked some of his hair behind an ear to keep it out of his face and frowned at a scrape on my chin. I didn’t know the language he spoke when I was awake, but in my dream, I did. 

“Wait,” he said, catching my hand before I touched my face with my grubby fingers. “I can try to fix it.” His eyes unfocused slightly as he concentrated and then a light began to glow near my face. The magic felt like bubbles moving against my skin underwater. It was strange but not unpleasant. After a moment, seeing my skin had knitted itself back together, he smiled.

He spoke to me in the language I had heard so many times in my dreams. Some of it had become familiar to me, but not enough. I must have looked blank. He paused, staring at me, and then repeated himself in different languages until it was one I knew. 

“Why are you here, Nerevar?”

“I don’t know where I am,” I answered honestly. “Where am I?”

“In my heart.”

“You look like yourself,” he said quietly. “You don’t always.”

“I don’t recognise my face, in mirrors or in water, and I’m not sure I ever have.”

In the distance, an ash storm swept over the land. The towering clouds obscured the horizon, and soon obscured the nearer land, as well. It was as if the winds had erased it. He leaned against his forearms, resting them on top of the stone wall. The mask looked heavy. He never seemed to notice. The length of his hair varied. Today, it was nearly down to his knees.

“Storms are common this time of year,” he said. “You should come inside.”

I smelled fire and someone screamed far away. It was a dangerous time for the herds. The doorway was dark, but the storm would scour the flesh from my bones. He held his hand out to me.

I took it.

In my dream, I am in a home I have never visited awake. A modest house. There is a forest. There is a lake. I do not have siblings, but I have many cousins. Later, I never remember their names, but in my dreams we play games. A girl, a little older than me, and her much smaller sister run through the hallway. The little one’s braids are only half-finished and she’s barely dressed, but her sister is laughing. Beads fall from her hair, scattering on the wooden floor. I have a net in my lap that I am trying to mend. We aren’t wealthy. My clothes have been patched and this net has been mended a hundred times before, but we do our best with what we have and we’re comfortable. No one goes hungry. I don’t know what a luxury this is, in my dream. I only know watching my exasperated cousin chase her sister makes me feel warm, and I am never alone.

I hunt in the river with a spear. Patient in the reeds, waiting for a fish to swim close enough that I won’t need to move beyond the downward thrust of the spear. The afternoon passes into evening and I clean and gut my dinner. I arrange them with sticks over a small fire I’ve built on the bank and lay back to watch the stars come out while it cooks. There is a noise just outside the circle of light. A girl, skinny and filthy, poised to run. I can’t tell if she’s young or just very slight. I give her most of the fish, which she devours silently. 

“What’s your name?” I finally ask, picking the last scraps of meat from my portion.

“Sula,” she mumbles. “But I hate it. Don’t call me that.”

It is the only time I hear a name in these dreams that isn’t directed at me.

Later, when I dream about her, she’s a boy. Still small, even when we’re older (the top of his head is nearly level with my chin, and I lose track of the number of times he knocks my teeth together when he hugs me), but good with a sword and we’re friends. He and the dark haired boy like each other, too, and we spend a lot of time together. I dream of the three of us sitting by a river talking about nothing but all of us happy and when I wake up, I am crying.

I dream of a war. My armour digs into barely healed wounds. We are all tired, bloody, muddy, hungry. How long have we been here? The enemy’s reinforcements are pouring down the mountainside towards us and the situation is grim. I can’t shout above the sounds of battle happening all around us, so I raise my sword like a banner to rally my men. I am afraid, but we will all die if I don’t try.

* It is night, late on a warm summer evening. The moons wander slowly across the sky. I both wish I could see his eyes through his mask and feel grateful that I cannot. The wind stirs his hair gently. He smells like sandalwood but something isn’t right about it, and instead of comforting me, it unsettles me. I am always unsettled when I see him. 

“We’re dead,” I observe, a little startled.

“Yes,” he says evenly.

I have nerevoryn brainworms that torment me day and night, so I answered this ask game under the cut (I did this for myself not for anyone else, pls be nice and ignore it if u don’t like something you see here!)

(A lil clarification: I headcanon Voryn as nonbinary and I use they/them pronouns for them, also they’re ace and afab in my hc, pls look away if that makes u uncomfy) • How did they first meet? They met when Nerevar was hopping from House to House to ask to be supported as Hortator, he just kinda showed up at Voryn's home outta nowhere and was met with 38237 identical serious Dagoth siblings. I can’t think about it without laughing dgsfh

• What was their first impression of each other? Voryn thought Nerevar a fool at first, for coming all the way to Kogoruhn just to ask for political support and to justify /why/ he should be politically supported However, Voryn saw almost instantly that Nerevar was genuine and driven and had strong ambitions for Resdayn, and they ended up agreeing on a lot of things. Meanwhile, Nerevar's first impression of Voryn was...kinda non-existent? He didn't pay much attention to them and didn't differentiate much between Voryn and their siblings. They were all just a bunch of polite goths to him, so he liked them from the beginning 😹

• Did any of their friends or family want them to get together? Voryn's family was neutral and maybe a lil cautious, but ultimately didn't interfere at all and they quickly accepted Nerevar as part of their family Nerevar has no family, though I consider Vivec to be his family in some way. But no, Vivec didn't really want them to get together :') (he didn't like Voryn very much in the beginning, he thought they're boring, too serious, and has no sense of humor LOL but he warms up to them after a while.. he won’t stop messing with them tho, bc they’re rly easy to tease and that’s fun) • Who felt romantic feelings first? Voryn did. Nerevar's feelings only started ages later, he's not really the type to sit down and analyze/reflect on his feelings, so he didn't realize he had romantic feelings until they hit him full force LOL • Did either of them try to resist their feelings? Voryn tried, but gave up and opted for hiding their feelings instead of suppressing them 😔 • If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think? They would believe it. Nerevar wouldn't immediately assume it means "romantic soulmate" though, he already sees Voryn as a very close friend so the news that they're soulmates makes perfect sense to him. On the other hand, Voryn wouldn't be surprised to find out they're soulmates, but they'd feel like it's a cruel thing to do to them both, since they can't be together openly and in the way that they want to be. It would be heartbreaking to them :’/ • What would their lives be like if they had never met? Voryn's life would've remained quiet and uneventful, most likely. And they wouldn’t have ended up the way they did in canon.  Nerevar is an unpredictable mystery though so I have no idea, maybe he'd go down a different path and take some impulsive bad decisions in his life 🤔 oh wait he already does that nvm • Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go? Nerevar initiated it. Voryn has had feelings for him for a very long time, but at first they didn't want to be in a relationship with Nerevar due to how complicated it would be, but yeah...they couldn't ignore their heart's call, and definitely couldn't refuse Nerevar when he started returning the feelings :') • Did they have an official first date? If so, what was it like? YEAH!! I have no idea though! It would've been secret but very nice and romantic :'D • What was their first kiss like? It was intimate, and heavy. It was packed full of years of suppressed feelings and wishes. Voryn may have teared up a bit lmao • Were they each other’s first anything (kiss, relationship, etc.)? Nerevar has already had relationships (though nothing long-term) and has had...experience with ppl, in all meanings Nerevar WAS Voryn's first everything though! Mainly because Voryn has never had much interest in ppl before, and just the thought of kissing grosses them out, unless it’s with the right person ofc uwu • What’s their height difference? Age difference? Nerevar is 6'1 and Voryn is 5′6-5'7, they're the same age though! • What’s their relationship with each other’s families? Nerevar likes the dagoths. They don’t pry into his business (ahem, affair*) with Voryn and they always welcome him to Kogoruhn with no problem (aka they tolerate his out-of-nowhere appearances and occassional odd behavior). He finds it a bit unsettling that Voryn has so many siblings but he doesn’t question it. Voryn tries to get along with Vivec, even tho the younger makes it difficult. Voryn is an older sibling, so they have the patience to deal with a younger moodier mer who’s hellbent on disliking them for no reason LOL • Who takes the lead in social situations? Nerevar does, Voryn is really awkward at socializing and hates doing it too 😹 • Who gets jealous easier? They both do, but their jealousy manifests in different ways. Having time to spend together is rare for them, so they treasure every little moment they have. They both prefer spending time completely alone with one another, somewhere far and secluded where they can’t see or hear any other people. Nerevar needs moments of quietness to recharge after dealing with so many ppl in his daily affairs, so he really appreciates Voryn’s company bc their energy is very calming and they’re just quiet and pleasant in general.... they’re the type to sit in comfortable silence and just lean on one another as the world fades around them :’) • Who’s better at comforting the other? They know each other very well, so they're both amazing at comforting each other, except it's a lot easier for Voryn to comfort Nerevar solely because Voryn isn't as open about their emotions as he is, and doesn't want to worry Nerevar with anything, so they keep their emotions/pain private much more than Nerevar does. Nere's more open about things that bother him and spills his soul out to Voryn often lol • Who’s more protective? Oh gosh they are both overprotective of one another, they live dangerous lives after all. However, Voryn's the type to get physically sick by worrying over Nerevar's well-being... Nerevar doesn't handle it any better tho, he would become very spooky and destructive if anything happened to Voryn 👀 • Do they prefer verbal or physical affection? Nerevar prefers verbal affection from Voryn, because he knows Voryn’s words are always truthful. Voryn prefers physical affection from Nerevar though, because they know he uses verbal affection with a lot of people, so the physical kind feels more personal and genuine to them u_u • What are some songs that apply to their relationship, in-universe or otherwise? ... Though it's not a typical proposal, because their relationship isn't typical either. They simply propose that they both should undergo a ritual to bring them (more specifically, their souls) closer together... It’s the same ritual that Voryn’s mother did to their father, and they learned it from her before she disappeared/passed • What’s the wedding like? Who attends? It's a secret one, so no one attends it besides the two. It's not a wedding though, it's more like a romantic ritual conducted by Voryn themself, where they link their souls/hearts together :') it happens at nighttime in a secluded place, probably a cave with an open sky... somewhere in nature far away from any civilization • How many kids do they have, if any? Ok so I'm OBSESSED with the idea of Nerevar being adopted by the dagoths ;_; maybe not officially, bc he's already adopted into House Indoril, but he's Literally adopted as part of the dagoth /family/ 😭👊 they welcome him warmly anytime he visits and he has his own room at kogoruhn n stuff. He gets along well with all of voryn's siblings, even the more rude ones :]

As for a Voryn hc...they're a middle child but they act as if they're older tbh, they're very responsible and attentive with all of their siblings' emotional and material needs and makes sure they're all well cared for. Yes even the adult ones. Voryn is Caring, but stern when necessary 😤 all their siblings cherish them tho and they'd protect Voryn with their life if needed. Also, voryn's siblings have nicknamed them 'Ryn 👊😭💞

Voryn is emotionally invested in anything that has to do with the earth, the physical world itself, such as gardening, alchemy, caring for their animals (and bugs) back at home, etc.

Nerevar loves to wander??? Like camping, hiking, and just going into the open world alone (he sometimes drags voryn outdoors with him). He's the type who would climb the top of a mountain just to feel closer to the skies and the heavens. He likes reading too, and he tries to write but he finds it impossible to express his ideas with written words 😔

♒ - cooking/food headcanon

You wouldn't think a king and a noble would be good at cooking, would u? haha, unless.....😳 they kind of are!! Nerevar had to feed himself (and vivec) as a youth so he can definitely make sorta Edible food, and voryn has 481382 siblings!? Personally I think voryn would enjoy baking more than cooking, and I can bet they'd spend a good chunk of time decorating the baked goods as well 🎂🍰 it brings voryn great joy and a feeling of fulfilment to see their family enjoying something they've made themselves :']

☼ - appearance headcanon

They're both VERY pretty but in very different ways. Nerevar looks ethereal and untouchable and ??? somehow never has bad hair days (he has a Full head of hair in my interpretation, very long n flowy, also wavy), he also just looks good in anything?? Not bc he suits any outfit, but bc he has the attitude to pull anything off lol (bonus: he has a very punchable face), he's also a pretty Big Lad, specifically 186cm in my hc (I think that's like..6'1 and a half?? I don't know!!) he's pretty beefy btw 💪

Voryn is like... they appear down to earth and grounded and serious, but if you look closely you'll find they get a dreamy look in their eyes when they're lost in thought, all their emotions show in their eyes rather than anywhere else on their face. In my interpretation they don't like standing out at all, so they're just a shadow wearing lots of long & loose robes/cloaks/etc. They take good care of their hair, although they do have bad hair days sometimes and it looks absolutely Spectacular when that happens. When they're actually feeling themself (mostly in private, when they're with family n such) they will dress up nicely in fine dagoth clothing and do their hair nice n stuff, they'll be unrecognizable from what they look like when they're at "work" on the mainland 😔 they're of pretty average size, just 168cm (yes it's the same numbers as Nerevar's height but inversed, I want these losers to match!!) And yes they do paint their toenails as well as their fingernails. Voryn is just a perfect elf imo 😔💖

5: first headcanon that pops into my head Oh I have so many..... I think I read about this on wiki and I’m not sure if it’s canon or not, but I hc that at the battle of red mountain, Voryn did die and he lost his original body but gained a new one with the heart’s power (I mean he’s like 3 meters tall in the game, that couldn’t have been normal in his life as a mortal...?) Nerevar’s an orphan (not born in any house but was raised into house Mora, and later adopted into house Indoril when marrying Almalexia), he has no family of his own other than Vivec (who he sees as a younger sibling of sorts) but he feels very at home with Voryn’s family, aka 29328328 overly polite dagoth brothers that all look the same I think most of my hcs about these 2 are unpopular, but here we go. I see Voryn as nb afab, he’s a middle child and had a very quiet childhood. He and his younger sibling Araynys have a different mother than the rest of their siblings, and she died when Voryn was still a child, but it’s alright. No sad here it’s okay I promise╭( ･ㅂ･)و ̑̑） I hc that if Nerevar hadn’t come along to drag him out of his home-basement, Voryn would have probably never left Kogoruhn to venture out there and partake in politics (he likes his quiet farm life). He doesn’t really enjoy his work as high councilor, but he’s good at it and he’s responsible (and he doesn’t want to disappoint his hortator), so he does his job properly and well ∠( ᐛ 」∠)＿ Nerevar is the love of my life a SLY king. He’s good at manipulating ppl to get them to see his pov and get them on his side, he’s just overall smart at handling ppl (especially Rich people) in a discussion. He can get paranoid and have moments when he doesn’t trust anyone around him (except for Alandro Sul and Voryn), he’s pretty obsessive about his ideas and overly ambitious goals, he’s just driven by a desire to Do More...... also he likes sweets. I hc that Voryn wears 938238 layers of clothing and Nerevar wears like. none I think the contrast between them is rly fun. Voryn’s home is nice and warm since it’s so close to the volcano, so he’s not used to cold weather and straight up freezes as soon as he has to deal with it. Nerevar handles all kinds of weather much better tho! Also?? Voryn being shorter than Nerevar is a really fun headcanon and I love it a lot! All heights are good for him but I think I just like the contrast of Nerevar being the big one here, or at least them both being around the same height, hmmm... They’re both very pretty looking btw

6: one way in which I relate to this character I mean...... Voryn is basically my self insert ｡ﾟ･（>﹏<）･ﾟ｡ I project on him a lot, and I think that’s great and fun and I’m not ashamed of it! (๑•̀ω•́ ๑) I also vibe with how polite and romantic he is in canon (tho I have a completely different voice headcanon for him because yeah _(・ω・｣ ∠)_ As for Nerevar... he has moments where he does things impulsively and acts based on his instincts instead, and that’s what I always tend to do too.

7: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character I feel second hand embarrassment every time I imagine Nerevar visiting the Dagoth family, and him sticking out like a sore thumb in a sea of somber serious-looking goths. I compare nerevar to a christmas tree decorations a lot, he’s a shiny golden eyesore The only embarrassing thing about Voryn that I can think of, has to be his actual feelings. In private, he can say really cheesy things in complete seriousness, he’s the type to make very cliche declarations of love and write sappy love letters. He’s sincere about his feels, bless(´;ω;｀) 8: cinnamon roll or problematic fave? I wanna say they’re both cinnamon rolls, but truthfully Nerevar really borders on problematic fave. I will die defending Voryn no matter what, he’s babey(●´ω｀●)ゞ
