Helloooo just wanted to ask a few things about the hazbin soundtrack!!
1. So, were the songs recorded with a live orchestra or was it made digitally? Because the composing on all the songs, especially the finale, was absolutely grand!
2. Who played Lucifer's fiddle solo on "Hell's greatest dad"? (I think it's a fiddle at least lol)
3. Thanks for reading and I can't wait for season 2!
Yooo, sure!
1) Most of the orchestra sounds are from digital sample libraries, which consist of real live recordings, so they’re not quite digital instruments and not quite live. All of the guitars were live, as well as a smattering of other instruments. My co-writer Andrew Underberg did all the piano himself, and he has an orchestrator who works for/with him named Keith Horn who I gotta give major kudos to, who fleshed out brass, string, and woodwind sections after we finished our demos. Keith is brilliant, and we’re trying to get him permission from Prime/A24 to post some of HIS process on his YouTube channel!
2) The fiddle was a live instrument played by one of our session musicians! In this case, the super talented Kristin Weber I believe.
3) Thanks for asking! ❤️ With all the attention the show has been getting, a lot of folks have questions so I’m more than happy to answer anything that doesn’t require me to break NDA!

Listening to Hazbin songs on shuffle is crazy. Like, you go from a song so good it's making up 89% of the jam industry

If we can get a song like “we don’t talk about Bruno” in Hazbin hotel where all of the characters sing different verses at the same time near the end that would be perfect

thinking about:
that one part in Finale at the 1 minute 57 second mark
Husk’s super low verse “new lights across the marquee”
holy shit Keith David did not have to go so hard on that verse
and right after that, the low/high harmony with Husk and Charlie/Vaggie on “sorcery” leads directly into the Vox/Val duet section of the song
ARE YOU KIDDING ME
ITS SO PERFECT
help its so hard listening to this song in public bc it always makes me cry but this part goes fucking CRAZY
it just hits different

Note
the melodies on hazbin's soundtrack are absurdly catchy, songs like poison, loser baby, the list goes on rly; do you have any advice on topline writing for musicals like this, or have a process for it? do you start with a melody first then add lyrics or vice versa? (and also do you talk more about this specifically in the online studio class?)
So I do talk about this a little in my class: studio.com/samhaft (shameless self plug!), but that’s 7 hours of content so I’ll try to condense this to a few paragraphs, sorry it’s still a lot:
The way I’ve learned to noodle melodies is by FIRST finding a vamp / chord progression / riff I’m happy with, and then either scatting over it until I’m happy, or if I have a phrase or phrases I know I want in the song, try to work THOSE into a pleasing melodic shape over some guitar chords, and go from there. Something I keep in mind with melodies like this is I want to be surprising - but in order to be surprising, I need to be familiar. In order to defy expectations, you need to create expectations. So, first off, do not try to be too melodically clever. If you’re doing something too out-there, there won’t be any expectations of where the music is going, that you can then defy to pique interest. It’s too amorphous to be hook-y and memorable! But if you’re TOTALLY conventional, you’re boring. So create a foundation of familiarity you can then use to surprise the listener. That’s fundamentally what “catchy” is - something memorable that sticks out of something conventional, like a hand-hold on a smooth rock climbing wall.
And generally, the first catchy melodic phrase I stick to tends to NOT be the chorus (which is in opposition to the ‘chorus-first’ process pop songwriters generally teach). I like making my choruses feel like conclusions to thought-processes, punchlines to setups, etc - so I always try to build out the song semi-chronologically, to arrive at the chorus in a logical way, both message-wise, and melody-wise. This also means that after finding my first catchy melody, I need to find something even catchier to anchor the chorus! It ensures my first good idea is never my best idea. In fact, in my class I actually ended up throwing a song away and restarting (sorry for the spoiler) because I outdid my original idea by so much that I had to start a new song around the new much catchier concept.
Poison, Loser Baby, More Than Anything, Whatever It Takes, Hell Is Forever, were all written in this way - ‘writing your way TO the chorus’ - which is pretty central to my class.
There ARE songs in Hazbin that start with a chorus, like It Starts With Sorry, but even then, the chorus has an internal logic that takes a setup - “it starts with sorry, that’s your foot in the door, one simple sorry, spoken straight from your core” - and brings it to its melodic and logical conclusion - “the path to forgiveness is a twisting trail of hearts, but sorry is where it starts.” That song doesn’t even have a verse! It’s chorus bridge chorus!
There are also songs WITHOUT what you’d traditionally call a chorus, such as ‘argument songs’ Hell’s Greatest Dad or Respectless, which are designed to build tension and intensity to a fever pitch before an abrupt end or interruption, or songs with MOVEMENTS instead of choruses, often in ensemble numbers, like You Didn’t Know or Finale, which have several moments that are ‘chorus-like’ but all different.

SONG ANALYSIS PART 1
I re-watched Hazbin hotel and the nuances are crazy !!!!
Respectless
Velvet isn’t just beefing with Carmela. She is also the representative of Social Media. Social media is crazy, irate, and rude. Like Velvet in this song.
Plus all the other overlords represent old industries(industries that were established before SM)
Carmela=Arm sales
Alastor and Rosie=Radio and gossip (word of mouth to pass information)
(I don’t know the rest of the overlords names sry 🫠)
Loser, Baby
This is not jay about angel and husk troubles. But also how society sees addiction(s), mainly how the person is a loser/sucker for falling into the industry.
It’s kinda sad when u think about it.
Hell is forever
Adam isn’t just being a douche to Charlie about her idea. He is also expressing the views of Christianity. This is how a lot of Christians view the judgement of Heaven and Hell.
Poison
I have said this before,
It’s about abuse that angel and people like him go through in the p0rn industry. This normally leads to drug abuse, sexual assault, and exploitation.
PLEASE DONT SEXUALIZE THE SONG!!! AND DONT SEXUALIZE ANGEL IN THIS SITUATION!!!
Hells Greatest dad
This is a dick measuring contest between Alastor and Lucifer. Mainly about who has been there for Charlie’s ideas.
This also goes into More than Anything when Lucifer accepts that he really hasn’t be there for Charlie. But he still loves her regardless. (Which is nice)

There was a video called “‘Poison’ But It’s Honest”, and it had the absolute worst takes I’ve ever seen in my life (and the worst meter I’ve ever heard).
Now, I’m not going up to bat for Vivzie or anything. It’s more about how people want more complex story telling until it gets uncomfortable or unfamiliar, and then they claim it’s a fetish, or that it’s offensive.
Warning, I’m not a singer or an editor, just an English student with a love for cartoons and a hate for a lack of reading comprehension (who also happened to have a hyperfixation on making song parodies when they were younger).
Enjoy! Or don’t, I’m not your mom.

Ranking s1 Hazbin songs
16. Welcome to Heaven - The most bland, basic bubblegum pop. A huge disappointment to Heaven’s intro. I was more or so expecting a song that’s more orchestral and choir-y with sinister undertones. This song is a huge let down.
15. Whatever it Takes- The more I hear it, the more I hate it. Carmilla’s voice is just not doing it here and clashes with Vaggie’s voice rather than meshing. Even musically wise it’s not very good.
14. It Starts With Sorry- The actual music is great and Sir Pentious is amazing. It is LEAGUES ahead of Welcome to Heaven, but it’s too cheesy and.. goofy instead of emotional
13. Out for Love- Carmilla’s voice actress is a great singer, but she’s just not doing it for me 2 out of 3 times :(. Musically wise, it’s great. An absolute bop. But the singing isn’t.. my favorite. And don’t even get me started on the lyrics. It pisses me off that this song is implying that Vaggie has always only been out for vengeance but never truly out for love, despite the fact that that’s her whole thing. Her entire relationship with Charlie is about fighting for love.
12. The Show Must Go On- It’s sweet to see everyone supporting Charlie and all, but.. eh. The only reason it’s not lower is because of the Vs and Alastor absolutely KILLING their parts.
11. More Than Anything (Reprise)- Their vocals were phenomenal. They hit those high notes. But it’s too short.
10. Ready for this- It’s giving revolution, which I love. We’re getting to the really good stuff, so don’t take this being low as it being bad. There’s just some really good shit in this soundtrack. I love Alastor and Rosie’s part and them being so proud of Charlie.
9. Happy Day In Hell- Charlie’s voice actress was clearly having the time of her life. It’s so fun and broadway.
8. You Didn’t Know- It starts off eh, but once Lute gets her hardcore solo, things went up. Charlie and Emily singing together was just.. chef’s kiss.
7. More Than Anything- If we were going off of pure vocals and how good the scene was, this would be too 3, easily. But this is based off my own musical preferences. So while the song is definitely S tier, it’s not something I really listen to just to listen to it. But just because it’s at 7th doesn’t mean it’s mid. Farrrrr from it.
6. Poison- I really wish I could put this one higher. But it really goes to show how great this soundtrack is! Poison slaps. There’s not much to say about this song that so many people could articulate better than I ever could.
5. Respectless- Carmilla killed this. The classic and more traditional Spanish guitar contrasted with Velvette’s poppy and newer techno music really shows not only their personalities, but also a more difference in generations and what’s new. It gives huge Six vibes as well.
4. Hell Is Forever- I’ve listened to this song more than I’m willing to admit. It’s so good and the guitar solo genuinely slaps. Adam is such a little douche, but he’s a fun douche.
3. Stayed Gone- Who let Vox cook?! The beat is so fun and the beginning and end paralleling each other makes me go feral. Vox is such a boy loser, I want to squish his brains out.
2. Loser, Baby- Husk’s voice is so smooth and sultry, I really hope he gets to sing jazz in season 2. But he’s so sweet in this song and the song has such a sweet message in it. The part where he and Angel start singing about an undesirable thing they’ve done “I’ve got no more holes left to deflower.” “I sold my soul to save my power.”, is SO FUCKING GOOD.
Hell’s Greatest Dad- I’ve lost count on how many times I have listened to this damn song. It is so catchy and has one of, if not the best beat out of all the songs in this soundtrack. Lucifer being the only person who can get under Alastor’s skin is hilarious, I just know Vox is fuming. It just sucks that Mimzy ruined it. But this song is so good that despite that, it still manages to be my number 1.
