Hey there, so I really like history as a subject, and I'm pretty good at it. The thing is, I don't know what my career options would be if I studied it, or if I would be able to make money. My parents are heavily discouraging me from taking it as a major. As a 'historian' in training' what's your take? Thank you
Hi there! Sorry for the delay, ‘tis the hectic season…
Oh man, I have so many thoughts for you. Full disclosure: this is something I have worked on a LOT over the course of my graduate career both at my uni and on a national level; most of my advice, however, comes from a PhD candidate’s perspective and may not be directly helpful to an undergraduate, and I should also emphasize that everything I can say on this is very firmly based on the U.S. market only. That being said, a lot of what I can say can be universally applied, so here we go - 
The number of history undergraduates in the U.S. has plummeted in the last decade or so, from it previously being one of the most popular majors. There are many interacting reasons for this: a changeover from older to younger, better-trained, energetic professors who draw in and retain students has been very slow to occur, partly because of a lack of a mandatory retirement age; the humanities have been systematically demonized and minimized in favor of the development of STEM subjects, to the occasional benefit of students of color and women but to the detriment of critical public discourse and historical perspective on current events; with many liberal arts colleges going under financially and the enormous expansion of academic bureaucracy everywhere, resources are definitely being diverted away from social and human studies towards fields which are perceived to pay better or perceived, as mentioned in the article above, as being more ‘practical.’ (We do need a ton more healthcare workers/specialists, but that’s a different conversation to have.) But now I feel like quoting a certain Jedi Master: everything your parents say is wrong. Let’s dive into why being a historian is a positive thing for you both as a person and as a professional - 
You will be a good reader. As you learn to decipher documents and efficiently and thoroughly read secondary literature, you will develop a particular talent for understanding what is important about any piece of writing or evidence (and this can go for visual and aural evidence as well). This will serve you well in any position in which you are collecting/collating information and reporting to colleagues or superiors, and evaluating the worth of resources. Specific example - editorial staff at publishing houses either private or academic, magazines, etc. 
You will be a good writer. This will get you a good job at tons of places; don’t underestimate it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been astonished (not in a punitive way, of course, but definitely with a sense of befuddlement) by how badly some of my Ivy-league students can write. Good writing is hard, good writing is rare, and good writing is a breath of fresh air to any employer who puts a high premium upon it in their staff. History in principle is the study of change; history in practice is presenting information in a logical, interesting, and persuasive manner. Any sort of institution which asks you to write reports, summaries, copy, etc. etc. will appreciate your skills. 
You will be a good researcher. This sounds like a given, but it’s an underappreciated and vital skill. Historians work as consultants. Historians work in government - almost every department has an Office of the Historian - and in companies, writing company histories and maintaining institutional archives. A strong research profile will also serve you well if you want to go on to work in museum studies and in libraries public or private/academic. As a historian, you will know not just where to find information, but what questions you have to ask to get to the answer of how to tackle, deconstruct, and solve a problem. This is relevant to almost any career path. 
You will provide perspective. Historians react to current events in newspapers and online - not just on politics, but culture as well (my favorite article of this week is about the historicity of The Aeronauts). Historians act as expert witnesses in court proceedings. Historians write books, good books, not just meant for academic audiences but for millions upon millions of readers who need thoughtful, intelligent respite from the present. Historians work for thinktanks, providing policy analysis and development (a colleague of mine is an expert on current events of war in Mali and works for multiple thinktanks and organizations because of it). Historians work for nonprofits or lobbying groups on issues of poverty, environmental safety, climate change, and minority and indigenous rights. In a world when Texas school textbooks push the states’ rights narrative, historians remind us that the Civil War was about slavery. Historians remind us that women and people of color have always existed. In this time and world where STEM subjects are (supposedly) flooding the job market, we need careful historical perspective more than ever. We need useful reactions to the 2016 election, to the immigration travesties on display at the southern border, to the strengthening of right-wing parties in Europe - and history classes, or thoughtfully historical classes on philosophy and political science, are one of the few places STEM and business students gain the basic ability to participate in those conversations. [One of my brightest and most wonderful students from last year, just to provide an anecdote, is an astrophysics major who complained to me in a friendly conversation this semester that she never got the chance to talk about ‘deep’ things anymore once she had passed through our uni’s centralized general curriculum, which has a heavy focus on humanities subjects.]
You will be an educator. Teaching is a profession which has myriad challenges in and of itself, but in my experience of working with educators there is a desperate need for secondary-school teachers in particular to have actual content training in history as opposed to simply being pushed into classrooms with degrees which focus only on pedagogical technique. If teaching is a vocation you are actually interested in, getting a history degree is not a bad place to start at all. And elementary/high schools aside, you will be teaching someone something in every interaction you have concerning your subject of choice. Social media is a really important venue now for historians to get their work out into the world and correct misconceptions in the public sphere, and is a place where you can hone a public and instructive voice. You could also be involved in educational policy, assessment/test development (my husband’s field, with a PhD in History from NYU), or educational activism. 
If some of this sounds kind of woolly and abstract, that’s because it is. Putting yourself out there on the job market is literally a marketing game, and it can feel really silly to take your experience of 'Two years of being a Teaching Assistant for European History 1500-1750’ and mutate it to 'Facilitated group discussions, evaluated written work from students [clients], and ran content training sessions on complex subjects.’ But this sort of translation is just another skill - one that can be learned, improved, and manipulated to whatever situation you need it to fit.
Will you make money? That’s a question only you can answer, because only you know what you think is enough money. That being said, many of the types of careers I’ve mentioned already are not low-paying; in my experience expertise is, if you find the right workplace and the rewarding path, usually pretty well-remunerated. 
Specific advice? Hone your craft. Curate an active public presence as a historian, an expert, a patient teacher, and as as person enthusiastic about your subject. Read everything and anything. Acknowledge and insist upon complexity, and celebrate it when you can. 
And finally - will any of what I’ve said here make it easy? No, because no job search and no university experience is easy these days. It’s a crazy world and there are a lot of awful companies, bosses, and projects out there. But I do very firmly believe that you can find something, somewhere, that will suit your skills, and, hopefully, your passions too. 
Resources for you: the American Historical Association has a breakdown of their skills-based approach to the job market, reports on the job market(s) for history PhDs collectively called ‘Where Historians Work,’ and a mentorship program, Career Contacts, which could connect you with professional historians in various workplaces. There is a very active community of historians on Twitter; search for #twitterstorians. For historians who identify as female, Women Also Know History is a newer site which collates #herstorian bios and publications to make it easier for journalists to contact them for expert opinions. ImaginePhD provides career development tools and exercises for graduate students, but could probably be applied to undergrads as well. The Gilder Lehrman Institute is one of the premier nonprofits which develops and promotes historical training for secondary school teachers and classroom resources (U.S. history only). Job listings are available via the AHA, the National Council on Public History, and the IHE, as well as the usual job sites. And there’s an awful lot more out there, of course - anyone who reads or reblogs this post is welcome to add field-specific or resource-specific info.

[PT-48]—Jikook Social Media AU—Focus (On Me!) 💫AU
Jungkook’s tattoos each had a meaning.
Yep, every single one on his body had a story behind it, a person who either inspired the ink on his skin or a memory that was too good to forget so easily, Jungkook always the one to treasure the most important things in life.
The angel wings with black and white feathers on his back were there in memory of his first girlfriend, who lost her life due to losing her battle to her drug addiction, leading to her downfall at the young age of eighteen. They connected with the tattoo on his chest which was of two ravens fighting over a heart. Jungkook had gotten that done when he had released his first EP, only nineteen at the time, the royalty check enough to get him a good tattoo artist to do his former best friend and ex-girlfriend justice.
The koi fish representing Ying and Yang behind his ears were there for his parents, who balanced him out on his anger issues when he was younger almost flawlessly. He had those done on a whim in Japan, Osaka to be exact, where he had been missing his parents one night and made his way down to the nearest tattoo studio, putting up with the pain even during the concert he had the following day.
The hangul he had on the back of his nape were for his hyungs, who stood with him from the start of career and would no doubt be with him until the end of it, having stood there through all of Jungkook’s tantrums and fits of anger, even going as far as to finding him a therapist that would do one on one sessions, no matter how much it cost them. He had those done in Seoul, during his Asia tour for 88Rising when his hyungs had a soundcheck and he had some free time, the first names of his little family going down his neck vertically.
All of his tattoos were on him for a reason, Jungkook always made sure of that. He didn’t want to go and get something dumb like a skull engulfed in flames just to regret it as time went by---no, Jungkook was smart, he only got tattoos when he felt that someone or something deserved it, earned to be on his body.
Though yes, he has a lot of tattoos despite that rule, but Jungkook’s met a lot of people worthy of the privilege. He’s picky but he knows when people or when something deserve what they earn.
That’s why he had ended up calling his personal tattoo artist, Taeil, to do some work on him in the morning, eating some cereal and walking his precious dogs before he had hunkered down to get his pieces down, one on his right cheekbone and the other on his stomach.
He had to get a personal tattoo artist because every single time he walked into a shop, fans would follow, and despite the artists being fine with the attention, Jungkook almost always felt bad for making the place go wild with his fans at the door.
Taeil had been introduced to him by Yoongi, who had a couple of pieces done by him also. Jungkook had formed a friendship with the older man who seemed to be happy working with Jungkook whenever he called, which is why he responded to his abrupt call with no problems.
“Who’s it for this time?” Taeil asked as the tattoo gun buzzed, tracing the lines of art he had etched onto Jungkook. The rapper was leaning back in the seat he had especially for these appointments, looking up at the ceiling of his living room with a sigh, music playing lowly in the background.
“Thought you’d know with my business all up on the news and shit,” He mumbled, flicking his eyes down to Taeil. Jungkook’s never been through such a scandal like the one he was going through now.
After that dick Jaebum had exposed him on Twitter, he hadn’t left his house other than to walk his dogs this morning, and that’s only because they got restless. He didn’t leave with a hat and a mask to cover his face though, since people had to know who he was for getting involved with Jimin.
The man huffed, flicking his eyes to look up at Jungkook before focusing on the tattoo again, black gloves stretched over his hands.
“I do, but it’s always nice to hear from the person themselves,” Taeil sighed, stopping his gun to change the ink bottle. Jungkook had been lying there for nearly two hours, the tattoo on his right cheekbone that was only about an inch big already done and slathered in antibiotic cream.
He was almost done, he knew it, and had been nicely accommodated in his chair while Taeil hunched, tracing the design he had asked for onto his skin carefully.
Jungkook’s design was really something else, something he had never expected Taeil to do so brilliantly for him, under a constrained amount of time too. It was a pair of two, Lotus Blossoms to be exact, tinted blue and purple while in full bloom, flames underneath them and the tips of the petals charred.
There was a crooked halo above one of the blossoms, a pointy golden crown on top of the other, both highlighted with a golden glow. The one on his cheek was a small cursive ‘J’, with the top curved out into an angel wing.
The tattoo, or, the tattoos, were no doubt for Jimin, Jungkook’s only thought at the moment about his lover, or, well, ex-lover. Since the drama had started, he hadn’t been near his phone, not while all of his social media was blowing up.
He had deleted everything from Instagram to Gmail before he had touched it again, only ever responding to his hyungs. Jimin was still blocked and Jungkook tried hard to take his mind of the angelic man, trying things from working out at home to playing with his dogs only to find that there was always something that reminded him of Jimin.
His anger issues were always a stigma for the people he was around, always automatically thinking he was some kind of beast because of his temper. He hadn’t mentioned it to Jimin because he was getting better, and that wasn’t a lie, but his mandatory sessions had ended a month before they had met and even though his hyungs still wanted him to go to his therapist, Jungkook didn’t see a point in continuing the treatment any longer.
If people saw him as a regular person before his condition was revealed, then that meant that the sessions had to have been working, right? There was no need to see his therapist anymore, no need to talk about his fucking feelings over and over again anymore, right?
Maybe not, but Jungkook was shackled up in his house and he couldn’t stop thinking about Jimin, so he might’ve called his therapist and started his sessions up again through the phone.
He wouldn’t tell his hyungs just yet though, they would only make him feel worse about himself.
“My back hurts,” Jungkook complained listlessly, really only doing it to see Taeil get annoyed. Much to his penchant, Taeil rolled his eyes, which lightened his mood a little.
“Shut up, at least you’re not gonna leave here looking like the fucking hunchback,” The tattooist scowled as he capped the dark blue ink and bent down again, the gun whirring to life again and touching Jungkook’s stomach once more. The rapper laid back with a sense of relaxation he had only by getting used to the process of getting tattooed. God knows he’s done this too many times already, but that definitely wouldn’t stop him from getting more.
It felt like only five minutes had passed while another hour flew by under Jungkook’s nose. The whole time he had been humming along to the music playing, trying not to think about Jimin’s eyes or Jimin’s smile while he focused his eyes on the intricate ceiling lamp in his living room. Taeil had sighed and sat up straight, cracking his back in the process with a small groan of satisfaction leaving his lips, taking off the glasses he had on for the small details off when he was done.
“All done?” Jungkook asked, feeling Taeil’s fingers smooth on the cream onto his tattoo. The older man hummed in confirmation, snapping his gloves off of his wrists and tossing them into the small garbage bin Jungkook had brought in before they started, rolling his neck around.
“Yeah,” The artist yawned the word out, stretching his hands. Jungkook was already moving to sit up, careful with the slight sting that the tender skin on his stomach carried, “You can go check, I’ll start cleaning up.”
Jungkook nodded before he shuffled to his hallway, looking over the new piece to his collection with careful eyes.
The design had come out as beautifully as it did on paper, even the lines of the flowers carefully traced over. Jungkook couldn’t help but admire the work of art on his skin, inspired by his one and only muse. It’s been about a week since this bullshit’s gone down and Jungkook isn’t even afraid to admit that he misses his small, cherubic ball of sexy-sunshine.
Jungkook’s spent the week going through a whirl of emotions---from aggressive anger that he let out in his home gym to a drowning sadness he let his hyungs take care of, it’s been worse than a woman going through her PMS mood swings. Yeah, he did cry that day where things went to shit because Jimin was the best thing that’s ever happened to him in a long time, and that’s no exaggeration. Jungkook didn’t feel worthy of being in front of Jimin anymore, not when he had to find out about his condition through his asshole ex-boyfriend and broke their unspoken rule of no more secrets between them.
He didn’t belong in the presence of an angel, he really didn’t. Jungkook was a sinner, he knew it and he didn’t even go to church, for fuck’s sake. Jimin may not be innocent either, but in Jungkook’s world, he was as pure as the angels in the sky were, while he was one of the devil’s cronies.
Jungkook couldn’t face him, no matter what. Even if Jimin wanted to see him, it would be too embarrassing, the sense of having let the singer down too overwhelming for someone as emotionally unstable as Jungkook.
And that’s why he had gotten the tattoos done, to save him that embarrassment. If he couldn’t bring himself to see Jimin again, he would always carry pieces of him, of the best thing he’s ever had in his life, something that was his.
Although, Jimin wasn’t really his anymore, was he?
“Kook!” Taeil called for him from the living room, “Kook, yah! Come here, Namjoon is on the phone,”
Jungkook snapped out of his trace with the tattoos and blinked, his hair falling into his eyes messily. He turned around and walked back to the living room, brow raised as Taeil shoved his phone at him, lips pursed while he went back to sorting his things in the right place, Jungkook bringing his phone up to his ear slowly.
“Hyung?” The younger rapper asked tentatively.
Within a second, he was literally bombarded with the voices of his hyungs.
“Jungkook, you piece of absolute shit!” He heard Yoongi growl, tone malicious. The raven winced at the sharp voice of his hyung, not having heard that attitude in Yoongi’s voice ever since he got lost in Walmart that one time, and even then, it wasn’t as fierce as it was now,
“Where’s your phone, goddamn it, we’ve been calling and texting you for like an hour!”
Jungkook rubbed the back of his neck, “Taeil was doing some work on me,” He told them apologetically, checking the time with a glance of his eyes to his cable box.
5:50 PM, he read. Damn, they had taken a while.
“Jesus, I want to just kill you sometimes,” Hoseok muttered, annoyance lacing his tone, “Please tell us you’re at least caught up with what’s going on? Kook, please?”
At that, Jungkook drew a blank, “Uh,” He mumbled, playing with the hairs on his nape. He hadn’t told his hyungs about the lack of any social media on his phone, but now was a good time than never.
“I deleted all of those apps, like, Twitter and shit?” Jungkook exhaled, rubbing his hand back and forth across his neck, “I didn’t want to see any of the hate thrown at me, so I just deleted them before I could get sucked into that, so,”
“Is he serious?” Jungkook now heard Namjoon speaking, though it was far, and he could practically see the frown on his hyung’s face from the way his voice sounded. He didn’t understand why they were mad, this is usually what they did whenever a scandal popped up for them too. “Kook, shit, you really haven’t heard of anything? Like, nothing at all? Not even a word? Have you even spoken to Hwasa?”
Jungkook frowned, “No?” He replied, earning sighs and muffled curses from the group over the line. Taeil waved to get his attention that he was leaving, Jungkook sending him a distracted wave before the door shut, leaving him alone with just his hyungs over the phone. “Guys, what’s wrong? Has the problem really gotten that bad? Is Jimin okay? Jaebum said something else?”
Yoongi sighed in frustration, “No, Kook, god---look, you need to download all those apps again and get with the fucking program because this shit has somehow taken a turn,” Shuffling was heard and Jungkook heard traffic in the background, which meant that his hyungs were probably on their way over.
Great, just great.
“Also, turn on E! like right now,” Hoseok added in from afar, though Jungkook heard it clearly.
“What’s this all about, guys, seriously,” The younger sighed, turning around to search for his TV remote, finding it rather quickly on his coffee table. Jungkook turned around and clicked his flat-screen on, turning to the desired channel that his hyungs wanted on it to see the beginning of a special Jungkook didn’t know about.
But he was interested immediately when he saw Jimin on the screen.
“Hyungs, what…” Jungkook couldn’t even finish his sentence, raising the volume on his TV as the announcer began to spoke, showing clips and pictures of the famed Jimin Park.
“...Known as the world’s sweetheart with an incredible set of vocals, Jimin Park has managed to break record after record in his time as an artist. With his face used for modeling, his voice used for singing, and his words used for acting, there isn’t one person who doesn’t know who this Korean-American legend is in America, or anywhere really,”
“Jungkook, sit down, watch it, and download those apps,” Yoongi told his once again, voice softer than before, “We’re on our way.”
“Okay,” The raven said mindlessly, phone still to his ear even when Yoongi had hung seconds ago. His eyes and ears were focused on the screen, soaking in the praises that the TV announcer was giving to Jimin like a sponge, agreeing with it all because it was true, the man really was something.
But it made no sense as to why Jungkook had to watch this though.
“...Three years ago, Jimin Park was in a relationship with the singer JB, or better yet known as, Jaebum Im,” The announcer spoke over images of the two together, smiling, laughing, and being a couple. Jungkook felt something rise in him as he took a seat, downloading all of his social media apps once again with his ears tuning out the TV.
He snapped his head up again when he heard the word overdose.
What? Jungkook scrambled for the remote and put the volume up once again, phone in his lap while he closed in on the screen, elbows resting on his knees.
“A couple of days ago, the true light of this relationship between Jimin Park and JB was exposed by Jimin Park himself in a message to jk, the same rapper JB told had anger issues. In this message on Instagram, Jimin Park posted a photo of jk and left him a heartfelt message where he also told the public of JB’s abusive nature, ranging as from sexual abuse and drug abuse,”
Jungkook blinked.
Drug abuse? Excuse me?
“...And here today at E! is the man himself, Jimin Park, to share his story with the world,” The TV finally showed Jimin, who Jungkook hadn’t seen in a week, smiling gently at the female host, hair in a sandy blonde undercut, his tresses curled and his makeup light, wearing a pale blue hoodie and some jean shorts.
“Good evening,” The man spoke up softly, hands in his lap, “Thank you for having me here on such short notice,”
The host shook her head, “It’s not a bother, we support you here at E! Jimin,” Her smile was small and sympathetic, Jungkook not bothering to glance at it another time as he focused on Jimin, who smiled back, cheeks flushed.
Beautiful, was all Jungkook could think. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
The host cut through his thoughts with a gentle question, “Is there anything you would like to say first before the interview starts?”
Jimin nodded, looking up to the camera.
“Thank you for all of your support, everyone, I appreciate it,” The blonde relayed to the camera sincerely, teeth snagging his lower lip as he glanced down to his lap then back up at the camera, looking at it harder this time.
Jungkook swore on everything that he was looking at him, for him, something.
“And, um, Jungkook---I love you so much,” Jimin stopped to suck in a shaky breath, eyes glassy and teeth still nibbling on his lower lip.
“I love you too, so much,” Jungkook spoke gently to no one, only to a TV screen that couldn't respond back.
Jimin went on, wiping away a tear that managed to fall from his eye, “Please don’t get upset if you’re watching this, I’m really okay now,”
A lie at it’s finest, Jungkook knew it very well, but he sat back and readied himself to be shocked anyway.
He wanted to see how much of a turn things took.

Free professional development program to take place at the Alper Initiative for Washington Art at the American University Museum on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19.
Applications are now open for The New York Foundation for the Arts’ (NYFA) two-day Artist as Entrepreneur Program for Visual Artists, presented in partnership with Alper Initiative for Washington Art at the American University Museum (AUM) and provided to selected participants free of charge through the support of the Stephen & Palmina Pace Foundation. 
The Artist as Entrepreneur Program offers the fundamental principles of sustainability—and ultimately profitability—in the arts. This includes topics such as strategic planning, finance, and marketing. Additional material is drawn from NYFA’s popular textbook, The Profitable Artist (Allworth Press, 2018), now in its second edition. Participants have access to flexible and dynamic entrepreneurial tools such as the “Artist’s Action Plan” and Business Model Canvas (BMC) that provide a blueprint for your practice or specific projects. The structure is a blend of formal lectures and breakout groups, designed to build community among the participants and encourage ongoing dialogue, collaborations, and support.
The program has been customized to fit the needs of artists in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, and is open to visual artists of all career stages, including students. Participants will be selected through a panel review process; please view the required application materials.

Social Media Is Ruining Photography: Keynote Debate With Allen Murabayashi And Adriana Teresa Letorney At Photo Plus Expo
Resource reviews last Friday’s keynote debate on social media’s role in photography. Prestigious photographers list pros and cons of photographer’s use of social media.
A little about the conference, PhotoPlus Expo 2018 is the largest photography and imaging show in North America. They bring together 200 different exhibitors and brands with the newest and latest technology and services for all to try, touch, and compare.
Mentioned in the event page, this panel serves as an ongoing debate on the arguments for and against the use of social media. Even if social media heightens photographer and videographer’s exposure, social media carries its burdens and costs.
The two lead panelists are Allen Murabayashi, Chairman and Co-Founder of Photoshelter and Adriana Teresa Letorney, Founder of Visura. They will be leading the argument and debates on the pros and cons of photographer’s use of social media.
Adriana Teresa Letorney took the side of the cons side with Dusty Wooddell, and Allen Murabayashi argued the pros with Rhynna Santos.
Cons: How Much Hours A Day Do You Spend On Social Media?
One of the major arguments against social media in a photographer and videographer’s career is time. Both Adriana and Dusty are not ardently against social media, they consider a better management of the tool. And it is just that, a tool where people are able to engage with each other and create more. But, they take into account the statistics.
According to them, one study suggests the average American spends roughly two hours per day across various platforms. For freelancers, understanding that time is money is key.
Dusty argues that the average hourly income in the US is just above $24. Social media requires $1320 per month by the average user. A professional, however, he believes, may invest even more time. He also considers that having an account is like having a child.
How Do We Manage it All?
The question is: how do we manage it all? They both conclude that the demand to have an online presence is now mandatory and unavoidable.
They both consider the time spent and invested in social media and the lack of return. Especially in small towns and new businesses, its a lot more dependent on word of mouth than it is transient online connections. To have a growing portfolio is also important.
Its also argued that through their own websites, emails, phone calls, or even in person, leads to more inquiries regarding jobs rather than 20% of inquiries made on Facebook and Instagram leading to a paying job.
They ask, what does this all mean for the professional photographer? It is important to remember that there are pros and cons to social media, and how one wants to go about their business really is a deciding factor. I heard others ask whether or not social media is affecting the photographer than the photography, but all in all, is it worth it?
Pros: The Internet, The Greatest Resource In The World
On the side of the pros, the infancy of the Internet and social media make it harder to determine where photography will go, and yet, it is doing so much for exposure. Even if that exposure may not be entirely there, the future of technology and the internet is the future of photography and imagery.
For Alex, the Internet has become such a significant information exchange and networking service that allowed him to create a demand for products like PhotoShelter. With the new digital frontier, new possibilities are discovered and are sublimated into different products and styles that end up helping influencers and redefining photography.
The Accessibility Of Social Media
Another point that was made is the accessibility of social media and the digital world. Where photography was once for those who could afford cameras, now cameras are affordable and are shareable in a public space. They both argue that there is a wider network that is at the disposal of the influencer and photographer, and new forms of photography and art that are coming into being.
Technology and photography refreshen one another, and they argue that this new digital platform will broaden their scope in reaching out to others. As well as making it accessible for marginalized communities and experimental film.
No matter where you draw the line, the debate goes on and on. Technology is changing the format of photography. Both panelists understand the impact of social media in a photographer’s life. To sum up, the pros focus on the accessibility and possibility with social media while the cons hone in on the possible misfortune and loss that goes into the time spent on social media. Wherever social media takes you as a photographer or just a casual user, it is important to keep both in mind as you go along your career.

shake’- web platform to register as freelancer and apply to jobs – upload portfolio etc - think about your projects, what did you enjoy, what bought the most value, where does your expertise lie? -Organise your work - organise by practice, prioritise the roles where you bring the most value, think about what you want to do in the future- your portfolio should support that,make yourself hireable -Make it easy to understand, showcase the most important projects, be clear about the role you had in each project, show your process and the value you added to each project, state what type of opportunities you’re looking for or what interests you, make it easy to share -Make a website, social media professional account, or pdfs that showcase the work -Strengthen your portfolio – create proposals for your dream clients, join competitions and live briefs, collaborate with other creatives
·          2) get ready to invoice define your rate – what do you need to survive? -survival budget, income goal, taxes you will have to over your personal allowance- if you earn more than 12500, you must pay tax  What are industry standards -how much can you charge depending on level of expertise -how many projects do you have to undertake per month to reach survival budget -pricing strategy- time based pricing, project based pricing, value based pricing
·Decide your status -sole trader -simpler to register, fewer admin and tax headaches than ltd, no set up costs, smaller accountancy fees -limited company- extra workload and higher accountancy fees, tax benefits, protects your assets against company debt, separate bank accounts are mandatory

-Company employment-takes longer to earn lots of money for yourself as money goes to the employer and you have to wait for raise Freelancers-  sell their skills as a service – must be a skill that is unique to you, do work for bigger brand and create demand so that your daily fee rises, and you can charge more money for less work – very fulfilling to choose projects you want to work on , a great place to start if have no other options you can manage your own schedule, more freedom  - downside is you must be prepared to work long hours, a low fee at the beginning means you must work more jobs to earn a living, lack of structure, must be good at time management, harder to know when next pay check is coming in -working alone vs working around ppl – freelancers a more solo workers How are freelancers getting jobs? - sign up to freelancer platforms – dot unojuno, pplperhour, upwork, set up a profile, list your skills and price per hour is good place for beginners, you can ask your friends to share -freelancers must create contracts for themselves – you must list what you’re doing for the client down to smallest detail, be very specific, so they don’t ‘scope creep’ – make you do things that aren’t in your contract – always ask for payment for these extras -covid is a good time for freelance – staff redundancies to use freelancers instead. Demand for graphic designers and animators has gone up - reach out to agencies, send an email, show them your portfolio, ask if they have any freelance work to get them to add you to  their database – make sure portfolio is high quality lots of organisations like okmentor – go to non profit organisations and asked to join committee or help, build connections What makes a cv successful? -1 page, always send as pdf, be careful in introduction not to sound like everyone else – hardworking, passionate etc – be more unique – alter cv to client, show some personality, talk about why vs what- instead of saying ‘i did this’ show what this did as a result- write the results of your actions. Always ask for results for the work you provide. if applying for junior role, how what you did AND the impact you made - Reach out to people who work in places where you could do anything to add to your cv -Create your own experience – write your own brief, work for yourself – create your own projects use it as a project brief -show attention to detail and excellence – is the formatting good, no typos etc
What were your biggest struggles getting into work? -getting the job and feeling like an imposter/ incompetent -don’t underestimate the power of networking and asking for introductions -convincing people to work with her – no experience or portfolio ALWAYS TRY TO FIND THE ANSWER FIRST – THEN ASK -don’t be shy/ coy- fake confidence -always try to come with a solution, show how you’re good  at finding solutions. In interviews be a good listener -they are looking for real genuine passion and enthusiasm – come across as curious and interested - Use this time to work and upskill and expand knowledge, build portfolio, online presence -start practicing networking- it can change your career. 7X more likely to get a role if you know someone – try to start figuring out what you stand for, you won’t get hired if you don’t fit the culture - get really curious in the things you’re interested in – upskill in areas you’re passionate about -attend online events, go onto eventbrite and see what’s on – try to dm the event organisers, show your instagram, get in touch with everyone on the call
· challenges entering the industry  – make a choice, either prepare yourself to work really hard to stand out, work hard in your 20s so you can relax in your 30s – or if you want to have a work life balance- think hard about how you will stand out in competition - tips –if you go to a meeting, take notes– think of strategic ways to work smarter rather than harder – depends on the industry - its easier to get jobs in agencies than in brands for young people but you work very hard very late hours -freelancers –best thing you can do to get advantage is to make sure your online presence is up to scratch, put a lot of effort into it- employers will look – need to be blow away by what they see
tips for interviews and cover letters- if you’re applying for creative company, express your personality, opening line should be ‘hey team , really loved that campaign etc -reference their own work , compliment them , i love this because i am... -for interview- research research research – go to linked profile, company website, google the company news, ask and prep some smart questions

What to look for in an agent
The pros and cons of having an agent – and what you should look for to get the right match.
First of all do you want an Illustration agent who will get you work in a diverse range of areas or do you want an agent that will promote your work within the area of book publishing.  Most Illustration agents work within the areas of Design, Editorial and Advertising etc.. and their rate of commission is generally between 25% and 40% , most agencies vary commission fees depending on the area that it comes from eg design, advertising etc..
Literary Agents specialise in books, but some represent illustrators in the children’s publishing market. You can find a list of those that do in the Children’s Writers & Artist’s Yearbook, and you will also be able to see there what their commission is. Generally, it is between 10% and 15% for work carried out in this country.
There are as many good reasons for wanting an agent as there are for choosing to represent yourself.  There are a lot of of myths about agents, here are some things that agents are not :-
• Mandatory•Easy to come by, particularly if you’ve just graduated.• A means to avoid dealings with the business/ industry yourself• A fast track to instant success.• A guarantee of a steady flow of work
Many illustrators can, and do, benefit from having an agent. But for agencies their illustrators are a creative investment in which they want to see a return. They need to believe in you and your potential, it’s your job to make them to believe that you can deliver in the long term. That your work is interesting, inspiring and commercial and that you are capable of delivering work on time to client specifications. In short you and your agent are partners working to the mutual benefit of your career.
For this reason many agents prefer illustrators who have experience in their freelance career that already have industry experience and have established themselves professionally and styilistically with a growing profile. A good way of gaining exposure and catching the agents’ gaze is through any sort of selection process that attracts attention, such as competitions, exhibition and events and getting your work showcased in editorial and online articles in design/ Illustration magazine and blogs. This is in addition to normal marketing and promotion activities such as Instagram, Youtube, etc. Once you have identified the agent that you think will represent your work most effectively you will need to approach them, think carefully how you will do this. An informal personal introduction through a friend or industry professional is the most ideal situation. In a perfect scenario this could be informally at an industry event. However most of us aren’t that lucky and will be sending an introduction through mail or via e-mail. It is really important that this first “meeting” of you and your potential agent promotes you to your best advantage. Direct mail must be professionally produced and packaged showing examples of your most successful work that could be pitched at a commercial marketplace and whilst being original would not look out of place on their website and promotion.
If you are sending through e-mail, it is important that you communicate in a “professional” but friendly voice. Show that you have done your homework, how did you become aware of them?
Do you have any mutual connections, or associations? Start off with who you are and any commercial experience, how long you have been working professionally ( if you have been out of University a decent amount of time) Do you have any awards or accolades that have raised your profile? Do not ask whether they are interested in representing you in the first e-mail, discuss your work in such a way that it can promote another conversation in the future. This can be followed up by invitations to follow you on social media etc.., You need to show that you are keen without coming across as desperate, or a “stalker”

In an ideal world an agent will promote you effectively to a wider client base than you might otherwise have access to yourself. A good agent will have extensive knowledge of their clients’ taste and requirements. They will be familiar with a variety of effective means to generate work for their artists and, unlike most illustrators, will have no worries about saying how fantastic you are, negotiating fees, licenses and copyright and making sure you get paid.
Your agent will accept briefs on your behalf, read the small print in contracts and challenge inappropriate or unfair working practice, protect your copyright, calm ruffled feathers, (be they yours or the client’s), and generally ensure that jobs proceed as smoothly as possible. In short, they will shoulder all the pesky minutiae that can bog an artist down so you can focus on the actual work.
Questions to research
Online research will be integral to understanding, which agents to approach and how to approach them, so get searching. You can determine a great deal about an agency from looking at their website. If possible talk to artists who have representation and try and gauge how happy they are with their agent. Ask Art Directors. They work as closely with agents as artists do so they’ll have an opinion.
Here are some points to take into consideration prior to making contact:-
• Does the agency take on less well-established illustrators? If they take on less experienced illustrators will there be a trial period?
• How big is the agency? This applies to how many illustrators the agency represents and how many staff they employ to manage them. While the staff obviously includes the reps, it also includes those who manage the agency’s finances, maintain the website, deal with general admin, and shape the agency’s long-term business strategy. Opinions differ as to the ideal staff-to-illustrator ratio, but one can safely assume that one person looking after 150 illustrators is going to struggle rather more than a team of five with 50. Much of the day-to-day running of an agency involves taking care of well-established artists and keeping clients happy.
• What kind of clients do they have? Do you long to get a foothold in the advertising world? If so, don’t sign up with an agent whose client base is predominantly comprised of educational publishers. Ideally you need to be represented by someone whose clientele is in keeping with the type of commissioner you want to work for, and who has taken you on for your suitability. It’s important that you and your agent are on the same page when it comes to your long-term career goals.
• Is there an agency specialism or house style? Say you’re a fashion illustrator. Will you be the only one on the books? Or will you be one of many, since the agency specialises in fashion illustration? Either scenario could potentially benefit your career. But what if you’re one of several fashion illustrators sharing a very similar style? When an artist becomes highly successful, there comes a point when they start turning less exciting/prestigious/lucrative jobs down and some agents will make a point of hiring stylistic doppelgangers to mop up the excess. You could say, “Who cares? It’s money.” On the other hand, you might care a lot.
• What’s their policy on submissions? Most agents have a submissions policy on their website. Make sure you abide by it – i.e. no print submissions if they stipulate digital samples. Most agents will only get in
Your first meeting with an agent
Firstly, congratulations for clearing the first hurdle. It looks as though your research paid off. If you’ve got a meeting lined up, here are some things you should be discussing with your future agent before contracts are signed or verbal agreements reached:-
• How might the agency promote me? Some agencies, regardless of size or how many years they’ve been established, may rely more on print or virtual mail-outs, a website and paid forms of advertising than face-to- face client presentations. Some maintain it’s less cost-effective to do the latter while others swear by taking time out to develop and nurture strong client relationships. It might not matter to you in theory what methods your agency uses to promote your work. A portfolio can be uploaded to a website at any time but their publicity may come out at specific times in a year. So discuss this with the agency re.when is best for you to join and “come out” and how they intend to promote your new life within the agency. Will they promote you effectively, or do they just look after the big names?
• Where will they promote me? It’s common practice for commissioners to work with illustrators in other countries. Many UK-based agents seek to increase revenue and job opportunities by establishing offices or employing freelance reps for their agency abroad. Some join forces with agencies already established in other countries to represent them. Many UK agencies expect artists to be represented by them in more than one country if they have a presence there. If you already have representation elsewhere, or intend to seek it you will need to discuss this with your UK agent.
• Will they insist that all my jobs go through the agency once they take me on? Some agencies require artists to refer all their previous clients to them. Subsequent commissions are then dealt with by the agency with commission charged accordingly. Some oblige happily since it cuts down on admin they’d rather not be doing. If, however, you’re unwilling to relinquish the client list it’s taken time and effort to build up, you’re best advised to pass or see if the agent is open to negotiation. The Society of Artist Agents (SAA) has formulated an agent to illustrator agreement which many of their members use. This contains an exclusivity clause.
• How much commission fee do they charge? Some have fixed rates; others operate a sliding scale reflective of client budgets, (e.g. charging a lower percentage on editorial than advertising commissions). Most charge anything between 25% and 35% per job. You should not pay any additional fees, or any commission upfront. This doesn’t mean, however, that you won’t have to pay some promotional costs up front.
• What about promotional costs? Although the internet provides a variety of platforms to promote yourself for free, at some point you’ll probably have to start paying for agency promotion/publicity. Whether it’s inclusion in a directory with industry clout, a website upgrade, or even competition entry fees, this will apply whether you are in an agency or not. Some agencies subsidise their artists’ promotional costs by whatever percentage they charge in commission. Some ask for money up front, whereas others deduct promo costs from your earnings by an agreed amount over a specified period of time. Avoid any unpleasant surprises by asking them what their policy is.
• When will I be paid? Again this varies. Many clients have a policy of paying within 28 days so cash flow can be a contentious topic. Some agents will pay you as soon as, (or at some time during the month), the client has paid them; other agencies will pay within a specified timeframe, regardless of whether they’ve been paid or not. Others can keep you waiting much longer..
• Does the agency have a written contract? You should always have a written contract.   AOI agent members, and SAA agent members often have a similar contract, which contains AOI contract notes to help explain it. Ensure you question anything that seems unreasonable or unclear. It’s important to understand what may be set in place in the termination clause, if either you or the agent decide to part company. You may find they’re willing to negotiate over a questionable clause.
• Will we get along? In many ways this is one of the most important questions of all. While you don’t have to be best mates with your agent-to-be, you need to believe they’re honest, approachable and supportive. You need your agent to fight your corner when jobs go wrong; clients go bust or make unreasonable demands. Keep in touch with your agent, let them know what your aims are long term, keep them updated with new work and projects. Its also important to discuss the direction you see your work going and how this will impact on your clients/work. If the agency fails to inspire the necessary confidence and trust for you to feel you can do that with ease, keep looking.

I would say that it also depends on the geographical territory and the markets they are representing your work within. For instance – my US agent didn’t represent me for work outside the US, so I represented myself in the UK and that was nothing to do with them. I’m going to direct this more to younger musicians who have left high school and are contemplating full-time music playing or full-time music studies at a college followed by full-time music playing.
But first some info about me. I started music studies at the age of 8 at a specialized music school. Training included mandatory weekly classical piano lessons, classical guitar lessons, vocal lessons, and weekly choral singing. Throughout my 11 years at the school I participated in concerts, tours, festival events, private and public functions, professional recordings and RCM piano, theory and history exams.
By the time I graduated I knew that I was not good enough to be a classical concert pianist but I knew that I wanted to pursue music at the college level at some point in the future. I enrolled in a language B.A. program at university while participating in personal music projects on the side (rock bands, folk and pop bands).  I started listening to jazz near the end of my university studies and after completing my B.A. degree, got various day work in the city doing office admin jobs while continuing to play in rock/pop bands. This happened throughout the 1990’s. 
By the end of the 1990’s I gave up on the rock and roll dream and decided to enroll in jazz piano studies at a small college. I had a great time being surrounded by musicians again and throughout the 5 years pursuing a B.Mus jazz degree, I gigged throughout the city, playing restaurants, private parties, weddings, hotels, college events, and any gig that offered some kind of pay. 
Unfortunately I did not like the jazz scene as I felt I was always trying to hustle for good pay, deal with crappy bar managers, and irresponsible musicians showing up to gigs late or cutting out for other gigs at the last moment. I also did not like the late hours and came to realize that I did not want to live the life of a poor musician. I also valued personal relationships deeply and did not want to see myself alone at 45 living with my parents, room mates or having my rent paid by a girlfriend. 
As luck would have it I met up with some local jazz musicians who had been happily gigging and making a decent living working as supply teachers. They told me that the pay was great ($200 a day) and that it increased every time they completed a full school year of days. They could take days off when they needed and even book weeks off for touring. They were selective about gigs as their decision to do them was not based on financial need. They had income to travel, attend shows, do recordings, buy great gear, and have stable loving relationships. 
I took their advice and completed an Education degree. I did not mind supply teaching (its not for everyone) and my thoughts became about buying new gear and thinking about what kinds of musical projects I wanted to be involved in. I set some goals and now find myself happily working as a supply teacher, in a loving and stable long-term relationship, playing in three bands, gigging when I want to, travelling, recording, and enjoying life.
So here are my suggestions:
1) Know how good you are. Music at the college level is a great place to find this out and even if you are not the greatest player or have killer chops, you can meet some kindred spirits (fellow students and teachers) who may take you on a musical path that will fit with your playing ability and who will help you with your aspirations and goals.
2) If you can’t attend music school or feel that it’s something you don’t need then immerse yourself in your music community and find out how to maximize your earnings (gigs, teaching privately, connecting with other arts communities - theater, T.V. , film, dance, art galleries, ). Meet other musicians at shows, jams, concerts, festivals. Get a private teacher to continue your musical growth. They may also be able to give you gigs if your are committed and show enthusiasm. Find a way to pay into a pension. You will need it in the future.
3) If you are a natural bandleader then form a band in music school or put an ad out on social media. Make expectations clear from the start ( rehearsal commitments, subbing, creative process, being late, etc…).
4) Pay attention to a musician’s behavior and decide whether it fits with your standards of professionalism. Write down your standards if you don’t have any and stick to them.
5) Pay attention to how you interact with others. People prefer to book musicians who are pleasant, on time, prepared, reliable, communicate clearly, are respectful, and don’t engage in unwanted sarcasm. 
6) Avoid bar managers/owners who have difficulty communicating relevant information or who have difficulty communicating in general. Don’t agree to anything right away and always get gig info sent to you by email ( gig date, band fee, sound check, etc…). 
7) Be aware of the current social environment regarding live music. Most youngsters are attending large Electronic Dance Music events so it may be a good idea to have a sense of this scene and see if there might be an outlet for live music. You could hook up with a DJ who employs musicians either at a private event or public concert. This could result in a very fat pay check for just one gig.
