a LONG overdue an ax book. he has significantly fewer than everyone else. i wonder why??

tobias panicking and screaming I'D LIKE A COKE at the lawyer's office is the funniest thing i have read in days
the eternal sense of surveillance in these books feels very modern.
tobias it's okay!! rachel doesn't care that you eat roadkill! or if she does, she'll get over it. i feel so sad that it makes him feel so crummy. my poor bird son.
i didn't remember tobias having such angst about being a hawk this late in the series. not to brush off his very real trauma. my heart just hurts for him.

well. this is it.
i'd been spoiled for Rachel's death about 20 years ago on fanfiction.net of all places, which is a funny thing when you think about it, but it doesn't hurt any fucking less now. I can't believe it. i hoped so badly it wasn't real.
i cannot believe that tom is gone. we never even knew him. just like Jake said. it was all for the hope of trying to keep him alive. I guess that was as foolish as thinking all the animorphs would get out alive.

holy shit we are just. off to the races fucking up that status quo huh.
i know i keep saying it and i know i'm 1) a broken record and 2) this is just the nature of being at the end of such a long series, but it feels seriously bizarre to have so many things changing in the fabric of the story. so much of what's been true for so long just *isn't* anymore. i absolutely flipped out with the blood sample stuff because like. there's no coming back from that. they've got their number now.
tobias' MOM is still around?! i 100% assumed she'd been killed.

animorphs book 47.5 (the ellimist chronicles) #thoughts
i guess all my reviews will be spoilered from now on, huh
wow. just wow.
i read this one (and the next two) on the plane a few days ago and i can't stop thinking about them. i knew this book was going to be vast and strange, but as usual with KA applegate, i really had no idea just how true both of those things would be.
KA applegate does NOT work in half-measures. the ellimist's species is so unique and strange. every other species that features in the books, too, really. the flying creatures suspending a crystal! who comes up with that? it reminded me a bit of the broken earth trilogy, actually.
i felt such profound grief for him :( the pointless loss of life. the arrogance that lead to it! the lonely journey across space, just to lose everyone he loved all over again. more proof that war and conflict uniquely target the young :(
that giant squid creature that wrapped around the entire planet? that he defeated with music?? gah! my heart!
the ellimist treating species like trees that he's planting and reseeding to stop the crayak. i teared up.
what an incredible book. i can't stop thinking about it.

animorphs book 35.5 (visser) #thoughts
i have no idea what to expect here. i am so excited.
oh wow, i just assumed that this would be about visser three based on the title.
holy shit classic sci fi courtroom drama with flashbacks. fuck YES!!
i never expected to get visser one's backstory tbh - this is a huge shock.
honestly the rest feels like a huuuuge spoiler so under the cut just in case!
is visser one female? i know she's had mostly female host bodies. obviously it doesn't matter except for the fact that the yeerk from book #19 (blanking on the name) was explicitly referred to with she/her pronouns and also had a female host. do yeerks even have gender? i feel like they do. which is odd. anyway.
i love all the callbacks to previous events aaaa
that fucking call to marco holy shit!!!
i don't know what to feel about the reveal that visser one had human children with another yeerk. on the one hand it's fully contextualized in the book and makes sense -- so far from home, she made a connection, both with the other yeerk and with humans in general. it feels poignant and meaningful and earned. and god, the scene where her human controller son is trying to get her to shoot his host body, jesus fuck.
on the other hand, this feels like pretty well-trod trope for female villains: a change of heart after pregnancy or becoming a mother/mother figure. i'm not a huge fan of it as a trope. but it mostly works for me here, i think. idk. i'm still sitting with it for now.
jesus god THIS IS SO PAINFUL. i wasn't sure we'd ever get a conversation between marco and his mom, wow.
has ANYONE suffered as eva lastname has suffered. all that just for visser one to go girlboss somewhere else. ugh. great book, though.

ok i have quite the backlog of these because i kept forgetting to post them to tumblr!
opening the book with marco sending jake a love letter as a "joke." i see. marcojake #real once again
omg we're getting on the INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY!! yes!!
whole lotta poop in this one, huh
jake getting smashed and ripped in half in fly morph is another memory of this series absolutely seared into my mind @_@
genuinely surprising to see marco take the side that morphing humans is violating their consent. it's interesting to see how the characters' views shift and what lines they will and won't cross.
THAT BEING SAID i'm with rachel and ax. i wouldn't consider morphing a random human briefly to gain access to a crucial location (in the middle of a secret alien invasion!!) to be a violation on the level that they seem to think it is. like y’all there is a WAR ON!!!!!!!
this AOL break-in is SUCH a delight.

animorphs book 37 (the weakness) #thoughts
morphing cheetahs for a mission reminds me of david's dream of morphing them and robbing jewelry stores, lol. king of subtlety.
omg i LOVE this inspector. smash cut to an it's always sunny title card that just says "visser three gets audited."
i get what this book is trying to do. but it's sort of agonizing to read. rachel is a bad candidate for a leader - we knew this. it's difficult to endure a whole book of it. maybe that's the point? but eugh. watching her constantly demand approval and all but ask the rest of the crew "do you like me? am i good?" makes me want to eject my skeleton from my body. she feels too much like her mean self from the starfish book. there's no nuance.
i know i just said that the kidnapping plot from #31 was insanely sloppy but THIS was even worse. at least that was by necessity. but why was anyone agreeing to this half-cocked very public serious of attacks? i can accept that rachel proposed it but why would someone like, say, cassie agree? i just can't see it.
actually i hate to say it but. huge dee from iasip vibes from rachel here LOL
okay, it's nice to see rachel trying something more balanced when her feet are held to the fire. though "stealing a plane for the vine" is a new one for the animorphs.
i just can't stop thinking about how mad jake's gonna be when he gets back, lol
i love the garatron. for some reason he reminds me of peridot from steven universe. i was sad to see him go!!!!
no WAY would jake let rachel off this easy. no way. i can buy the plane crash and the highly visible attacks but i cannot buy this. they scrapped HARD over david. they've fought worse over less. absolutely no way. bad. wrong.

animorphs book 29 (the sickness) #thoughts
“every time we try to do something nice and normal, it ends up turning out nasty and weird.” thesis of the books, tbh. very buffy.
it’s so sweet that tobias got to come to the dance with them :’) but i just realized something… if he acquired a morph of himself at age 12, will he ever get older? if he lives 50 years as a hawk, will his morph only ever be himself as a tween? oof.
this book has like 3 different extremely stressful plots happening at once.
i know the ax fever subplot is a little contrived but tbh, i love it. it reminds me of the atla episode where aang has to find the frozen toads for sokka and katara. and i love ax whump, which is like half this entire book.
cassie and the NEVERENDING STRESSFUL DAY!! jesus christ!! can someone please help this child!!
ok. if you’ll indulge a nitpicky complaint: i just can’t believe that erek is useless here when it comes to surgery. he’s like sorry none of the robo dogs in my family are doctors. guess i’ll just project a hologram for the whole book. you’re telling me you’ve been alive for thousands of years and you don’t even have a rudimentary knowledge of surgery? enough to stand over cassie’s shoulder to guide her, if you can’t actually make the cut? i know the chee can do no harm or whatever but surely something like this wouldn’t count?
that being said – ugh <3 what a book. i really, really loved this one. it’s always good to see cassie shine and have to make hard choices. she was so brave!! the return of aftran was a very welcome surprise. i got sniffly and choked up over that last scene with her in whale morph. really beautiful and touching. adding this one to the favorites list!

xander harris wishes he was marco. tbh.
the fan audiobook i'm listening to on youtube has some honestly very impressive sound design. morphing is always underscored by a disgusting squishing sound in the background. incredible foley work.
marco: ax, you could be either a really pretty guy, or a kind of unattractive girl

animorphs book 35 (the proposal) #thoughts
it's sort of a relief to have a marco book that just has the normal high stakes and angst instead of him grappling with maybe needing to kill his mother.
omg, lobster morph! that hasn't shown up since what, book 3? 4? throwback!
i think it's possible that my 30 year old self is simply too soft and weak to read animorphs. i thought i was going to hurl when the human controller was trying to kill marco in cockatiel morph. he's JUST a little GUY!!!!! a little birb!! ;_;
i will never tire of ax in human morph causing problems. i could read about it in every single book. yes, he's going to start eating things and going crazy. yes, i'm going to laugh every single time.
this is a weird one. i get that this is just a plot gimmick for a filler book in a children's book series, but i find it hard to believe that if a stress response could fuck up morphing like this, it wouldn't have happened already. marco's under a lot of stress, sure. but certainly not more stress than tobias in the torture chamber. or jake having to try to stop tom from killing his dad. or even the animorphs' average encounter with visser three. i think i'd buy the premise more if it was earlier in the series when this was all still so new to them, but it doesn't for me work this late.
this conversation with marco & cassie is nice, but like a lot of reviews i was reading, i wish this role didn't fall to her so often. she is the eternal therapist and deserves a break! it would've been funnier to see rachel do it, and it would also make more sense, now that i think of it - she's had a very similar experience, after all. let me write fanfic of this series in media res.
i enjoy that jake was the one to finally get through to marco by parroting his usual tough love back to him. that feels right.
let marco create a new star trek series. i am SO serious.
did marco's dad fully get engaged and married within two weeks?!? the most unbelievable detail of this whole thing so far. wtf. hello?

animorphs book 34 (the prophecy) #thoughts
i thought i was fully in uncharted territory (according to goodreads, i left off on book 33, probably because i was so utterly traumatized) but i dimly remember this book. maybe i read part of it, or read it as a child.
i actually find the recap at the beginning every book very soothing. i know it's repetitive but it feels nice to me, like greeting an old friend.
i thought the premise of this one was cool -- aldrea katra! -- and i do like seeing more of her and the hork-bajir world of course, but i kind of hate when a beloved historical figure or old character is revisited only for them to clash with or mistrust the main characters. i know it's realistic for there to be tension but imo it's not very fun or interesting to read about, at least for me. and it's telegraphed so obviously that aldrea is going to try to steal her body and i just. ugh.
and i HATE how bitchy ax is being here. i know he's full of himself and this is a contentious and infamous figure in his peoples' history but it's also not fun to see sweet, funny ax just being a dick.
it was nice to revisit the hork-bajir home planet. i like the hope for the future that a new batch of hork-bajir represents. otherwise, i didn't love this one.

animorphs book 33 (the illusion) #thoughts
god. what to say about this book. where do i even start.
i cried a lot during this one. i had to keep taking breaks because it was just so intense and awful. but beautiful, too - not just the writing, which i thought was unusually good. but the memories. the flickers of boy and hawk. the desperation and the hopelessness and then, finally, the hope.
tobias finding meaning in andalite rituals was just so impactful to me. his realization that above everything else, the andalites are optimists who've been forced to tamp down their joy to fight a war they never wanted.... god.
when elfangor appeared to tobias in a vision i really lost it. how can one body hold so much pain?
i don't have much insightful to say about this that it didn't already say on its own. i love tobias. i love these books. i have to believe in hope!

i was so startled and put-off by what i thought was an exceptionally terrible ghostwritten rachel until i remembered which book this was, HA. oh, this'll be fun.

i'm saying this as someone who enjoys the rachel/marco banter: marco genuinely asking out nice rachel is SO WEIRD TO ME!!
also so OOC to me because i feel like underneath all the teasing and the bluster, marco respects and even shares rachel's ruthlessness (to a degree). that's their common ground. marco is the person to say what no one else wants to voice and rachel's the one to do what everyone else is too squeamish to do. yes, they clash, but i feel like he wouldn't actually like this toothless rachel because they have more in common than not. like yes the real rachel scares him but it's more complicated than that. WEIRD!!!
alpha chad rachel is so ridiculous lol
i get what they're going for, but "cowardly rachel is scared of morphing" grated on me in megamorphs #1 and it's grating on me now too. there's only so long we can dwell there.
honestly maybe they SHOULD just try morphing tiny things and burrowing into visser three and demorphing to try to just explode him. they can't ALL die right
i know it's technically a correct usage of the word but i laugh every time they call nice rachel "simp"
