You had truly learned the meaning of the word ‘exhausted.’ Everything just felt heavy, and your brain was completely clouded. You were just running on autopilot. And you still just couldn’t sleep.
Waking up while Jake continued to snooze beside you, you slipped out of bed and stood beside your daughter’s crib, watching over her nervously. She was sleeping peacefully but you still placed your finger in front of her face until you could feel her breath. But even then, you stood there, watching her to make sure that she was safe and alright.
Jake rolled over in his sleep, reaching his arm out for you. But his arm rested against the bed instead of your hip and he started to grow cold from the blankets being moved. Jake blinked awake a few moments later and sat up to see you hovering anxiously above Maisie’s crib.
Letting out a soft sigh, Jake got out of bed and slowly walked over to stand beside you. You didn’t acknowledge him, still glued to the image of your daughter. Jake gently reached out, wrapping his arm around your waist, and pressed a soft kiss to the side of your head. You still didn’t turn to acknowledge him.
“She’s fine, Honey. She’s just sleeping.”
“I thought I heard her crying,” you told him softly.
"She's safe. She's just sleeping."
"But what if she's hungry?"
“She ate,” Jake reminded you gently.
“But I don’t think that she ate enough. What if she’s not getting enough, Jake?”
“We’re going to see the pediatrician in a few days,” Jake stated calmly, rubbing his thumb in circles over your hip. “But she wouldn’t be sleeping soundly if she was hungry.” Gently giving your hip a squeeze, he added, “Come back to bed. She’s sleeping. She’s fine.”
It took about fifteen more minutes of coaxing, but Jake finally got you to climb back into bed. But you still laid awake, staring at where your daughter lay, a million different worst case-scenarios running through your mind. And when Maisie finally did cry, you were beside her crib again before Jake could pick his head up.
He watched you, a bit defeated, as you picked Maisie up and carried her back to bed, urging her to latch and feed. Jake sat up to help you, but you seemed to be in your own world.
“Come on, Maisie,” you urged, an edge of panic in your tone as your daughter didn’t immediately latch on. “Come on.”
After a bit more fuss, Maisie finally started to feed, which let you finally take a breath. You turned to Jake when he reached out and gently grabbed your hand, giving it a squeeze.
“Are you okay?” Jake asked quietly, causing you to nod and look down at your daughter.
“She’s feeding.”
“But are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” you insisted, watching your daughter. “She’s feeding.”
“I’ll get her next time.” Leaning down so that he could look up and assess your expression, Jake reached out and gently brushed your cheek with his fingers. “You need to get some sleep. You’re still recovering yourself.”
You nodded absentmindedly, not agreeing or disagreeing with him, which only made Jake more concerned. He was worried about you. And the guilt that he felt while he was stationed away from you seemed to have returned with a vengeance.
Maisie unlatched and even though you tried to get her to latch again and feed, she scrunched up her nose and turned away from you. Jake stepped in and gently took Maisie from your arms. You watched him with a defeated expression as he started to burp her.
“What’s wrong?” Jake asked you softly as Maisie whined and wiggled a bit against him.
“Do you think she got enough?”
“She didn’t want to eat anymore. She’s full. I can feel it in her belly,” Jake joked, but you didn’t laugh. Sobering and staring at you with concern, Jake added, “Go to bed. I’ll get her changed. Just get some sleep, Honey. You’ll feel better.”
He leaned over and pressed a soft kiss to the side of your head before rolling out of bed with your daughter. You watched them go, staring listlessly at the door. Slowly fixing your shirt, you laid down and rolled over. Closing your eyes, you buried your head in your pillow as tears dripped down your cheeks.
Jake, meanwhile, finished up changing Maisie’s diaper and picked her up off the changing table, pressing a series of kisses to her cheek. Maisie let out a little coo, sticking her tongue out as she kicked her feet. Jake moved to sit on the couch with her and rested her against his chest as he leaned back.
“We’re just going to stay out here for a little bit. So that your mommy can go back to sleep.”
Jake gently rubbed your daughter’s back, pressing a lingering kiss to her head. Maisie, with a full belly and fresh diaper, didn’t spend too much more time awake before she dozed off again. Jake checked his watch before slowly standing up.
Walking back into your bedroom, Jake was relieved to find you asleep. He gently set Maisie back down in her crib. Getting back into bed, Jake was careful not to disturb you. You had barely slept since you came home from the hospital and he knew that it was taking a toll on you. Taking one last glance at his whole world, Jake moved to go to bed too.
~~~~~
You and Jake sat in the waiting area of the pediatrician's office. Maisie sat in her baby carrier at Jake’s feet, content. Jake could tell that you were anxious with all of the other people in the room and gently rested his hand over your bouncing knee. You turned to him as you fiddled with your wedding band and Jake offered you a supportive smile.
“It’s okay. We’ll be in and out. Alright?”
“I know,” you replied, before going right back to your nervous fiddling.
The medical assistant eventually walked out from behind the door and called Maisie’s name. Jake picked up Maisie’s carrier and the three of you made your way back. Maisie was weighed and measured, during which you nervously fisted the back of Jake’s shirt, before you were taken to an exam room.
The pediatrician walked in a few minutes later and greeted you kindly before moving to check up on Maisie. Jake took your daughter out of the carrier and laid her down on the exam table. Your heart leapt into your throat when Maisie whined. Holding your fist to your lips, you stared at your daughter as Jake looked back at you with concern.
The pediatrician conducted her standard checkup. Jake stood behind the exam table, smiling as Maisie stuck her tongue out and waved her fists. The pediatrician listed off a few questions that you and Jake answered, before moving to chart.
“She’s still taking her time to grow,” the pediatrician stated, causing your heart to jolt.
“She’s not growing?” you asked, your blood pressure steadily rising. Jake reached for your hand, but you ignored him, stepping towards your daughter. Looking Maisie over yourself, you turned back to the pediatrician urgently. “Is she sick?”
“No, I don’t believe so. She’s still growing, just at a slower rate.”
“Should we be concerned?”
“Not yet, no. Every baby is different and grows at their own rate. And they usually catch up in their own time,” the pediatrician explained, though it did little to soothe you.
“Usually?” you repeated, feeling your stomach contract and twist.
“Yes. We’ll just monitor her, that’s all. You said that she seems to be feeding regularly?”
“Yes, but I don’t think she’s feeding enough.”
“What makes you think that she’s not getting enough?”
“Well, she’s not growing enough,” you insisted, causing the pediatrician to pause.
“She’s perfectly healthy. Just a little small, that’s all. I see plenty of small babies that grow up to be tall adults. It just takes some time for some babies.”
“Is there anything that we can do? Or anything that we should stop doing?”
“Just keep doing what you’re doing. If it would help your peace of mind, you can keep a log of your daughter’s feedings and—”
“—I already have one.”
You pulled out your phone and searched for your log as Jake watched you closely. Showing the pediatrician your feeding log, you waited anxiously as she read through it.
“She seems to be feeding normally. I think that she’s just a little small, that’s all. Nothing to be worried about. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Your daughter is healthy and happy.”
“Thank you,” Jake spoke up, moving to put Maisie back into her carrier.
“You’re sure that we can wait until the next appointment before changing anything?” you asked as Jake stood up with Maisie.
“I am,” the pediatrician assured you before opening the door.
After making Maisie’s next appointment, you and Jake headed out to the car. Getting into the back with Maisie, you missed Jake’s worried glance. He turned around to face you, watching you hover over your daughter again.
“She’s okay, Honey. You heard the doctor. It’s probably nothing. She’s just small.”
“But what if it isn't nothing, Jake?” you snapped, causing him to pause. “What if something's wrong with her?”
“Then we’ll handle it like we handled everything else that life threw at us." Jake turned around to face you, though you didn't meet his gaze. "She’s going to be fine, Honey.”
You didn’t respond to him, continuing to hover over your daughter, like you were expecting some threat to jump out of nowhere and hurt her. Jake focused on the road, but his mind was in the backseat with you and your daughter.
~~~~~
When the three of you returned home, Jake moved to give you some space. He offered to watch Maisie, but you insisted on watching her yourself. And so, Jake left you downstairs to go and paint the nursery. The two of you were slowly putting your house together and the mindless work just helped him refocus.
It took a lot to shake Jake Seresin. But you were really starting to shake him. You weren't you. And it terrified him.
Painting the final wall with the first coat of paint, Jake paused when he heard Maisie cry. He waited for you to get her, since he assumed that you were hovering over her again. But when too much time passed and Maisie only cried louder, he dropped the paint brush and hurried downstairs. Turning the corner, Jake spotted you and Maisie in the living room.
Maisie was lying safely in her bassinet, letting out shrill cries with a bright red face. And you were curled up on the floor a few feet from her, sobbing as you held your hands over your ears. Jake looked frantically between the two of you before going to Maisie first as she let out another piercing wail.
“Hey there, Maisie Baisie, it’s alright,” Jake cooed, scooping his daughter up and holding her to his chest. Patting her back and bouncing her as he watched you worriedly, Jake tried to get Maisie to stop crying. “What’s bothering you?”
After getting Maisie to stop crying after changing her diaper, Jake placed her back in her bassinet before hurrying over to you. You were still sobbing uncontrollably, curling up on yourself. Jake kneeled down in front of you and gently grabbed your wrists and tried to pull them away from your ears.
“Honey, what’s wrong?”
You sobbed out a response that Jake couldn’t piece together, so he simply pulled you into his arms and tried to get you to stop crying and shaking. Repeating over and over again that Maisie was alright, Jake rested his head on top of your own and forced himself to remain calm and focused.
“It’s my fault,” you whimpered out, causing Jake to frown.
“What are you talking about?”
“Maisie. It’s all my fault,” you sobbed, which only made Jake hug you tighter.
“Nothing’s wrong with Maisie. She’s healthy. She’s fine.”
“She’s small.”
“For now. She just needs some time to grow, that’s all,” Jake reiterated, rubbing your back as you continued to shake.
“I’m a failure,” you sobbed out. “My mom raised two kids on her own and I can’t even feed my daughter enough!”
“Honey, you’re being too hard on yourself. Maisie is safe. She’s healthy. You’ve done everything that you’re supposed to do. You’re an amazing mom to her.”
You didn’t respond, except with more tears, and Jake just held you as you cried. Resting his head against your own and forcing himself to keep his voice level and without too much emotion, he moved to speak gently but firmly.
“I’m worried about you, Honey. You’re not you.”
“I’m sorry,” you sobbed, causing Jake to squeeze you tighter.
“Don’t apologize. It’s not your fault,” Jake insisted softly. “None of this is your fault.” Gently cupping your cheeks and staring into your eyes, Jake stared at you with all of the love and support in the world. “It’s okay. It’s all going to be okay. And I’m going to be here for you and Maisie through all of it. Alright?”
“Okay,” you croaked out shakily.
“I love you and Maisie with everything that I have. And I’ll be here every single step of the way, alright? I’m not leaving you two.”
You nodded in return, unable to put your emotions into words. Jake pressed another kiss to your forehead and pulled you in for another hug, unable to prevent a few tears from sliding down his own cheeks.
~~~~~
You stared at the woman across from you, nervously fiddling with your hands. After a few calls, Jake got you an appointment with a psychologist who specialized in PPD. He was waiting with Maisie out in the car now, which gave you some peace of mind, but you were anything but comfortable.
“Any history of anxiety or depression?” she asked kindly.
“Both, yeah.”
“Can you tell me about those experiences?”
“It was when I was a teenager. My mom died. Cancer. And my brother left me with our godfather about a year later and I was just . . . I felt like my whole life just crumbled in an instant. They eventually diagnosed me and put me on some medication.”
“And did it work?”
“Yeah, I went off of it about two years later.”
“And have you had any other experiences with anxiety or depression since then? During your pregnancy especially?”
“I wasn’t diagnosed with anything.”
“Did you ever experience any symptoms though?"
“I had a rough first and third trimester,” you stated quietly.
“Can you elaborate?”
“My pregnancy was unexpected and there was a lot of tension at that time with telling everyone and dealing with that. I made some mistakes, and I could have handled it better." You bit down on your lip, glancing down at your shoes. "And for my third trimester, my husband was deployed unexpectedly.” Fiddling with your wedding band again, you added, “It was very difficult. Emotionally.”
"Can you describe your thought process at the time? What were your concerns at the time?"
"Jake, my husband, he had become my support system through my pregnancy. He was there for everything, helped me through anything and with anything. And then he was just gone. And I had other help, but I just wanted him."
"Was the timing the concern or the fact that he was deployed?"
"Both, I think," you admitted quietly. "I needed him. And he made it, but he almost wasn't there. And I just spent so much time angry because he wasn't there."
"At him?"
"No, no," you replied quickly, shaking your head. "At . . ." You paused, trying to put your emotions into words. "I'm just tired of people I care about being ripped away from me."
~~~~~
Outside in the car, Jake was entertaining Maisie, who was smiling and cooing as she reached out for the toy. Jake tickled her tummy when he got a phone call.
“Hey, Penny,” he answered quietly, still entertaining Maisie.
“How’s it going?”
“She’s only twenty minutes into her appointment,” Jake stated, glancing over at the clock. “She was nervous.”
“It’s not easy to admit that you need help,” Penny replied, causing Jake to nod. After a moment, she asked, “How are you holding up?”
“I’m fine. I’m just trying to do everything that I can before I go back to work next week.”
“Maverick, Sarah, and I are all ready to be there for her and Maisie. But don't think about that right now. You still have time with them,” Penny reassured him, though she knew that he was still going to be concerned. “How is Maisie?”
“She’s perfect,” Jake replied, looking down at his daughter. Tickling her again, Jake smiled as she cooed at him. “She’s still small, which her mom is worried about, but the doctors say she's healthy.”
“She just needs some time and support, that’s all. They both do."
"I know."
"You know that we're here for you too, Jake, right? Anything any of you three needs, we're here for you."
"Thanks, Penny."
~~~~~
“How do you feel about going on medication again?” the psychologist asked, causing you to look down.
“I need to go on medication?”
“I think that given your symptoms and your past success with medication, it would be a good idea for both you and your baby. I’m particularly concerned about your insomnia and how it’s affecting your recovery.”
“Would I have to stop breastfeeding?”
“Not necessarily, no. But is your ability to breastfeed a source of anxiety for you?”
“I guess it can be,” you admitted quietly, shifting in your seat.
“Well, I’ll start you on a low dose, which is safe for your daughter. But if you feel that continuing to breastfeed is a source of anxiety, then we can discuss it at your next appointment. And you can also reach out to your obstetrician or your daughter’s pediatrician to figure out a solution that works best for you and your daughter.”
Your psychologist went through a few more things with you before you booked another appointment. Walking out to the car, you slowly slid into the passenger’s seat.
“How did it go?” Jake asked you softly as you set the pamphlets and paperwork down.
“She wanted to put me on medication.”
“Are you okay with going on medication?” Jake questioned kindly.
You shrugged your shoulders, more tears forming in your eyes. Jake leaned over to wipe your tears away lovingly, which made you shudder, remembering how you yelled at him before.
“I just want to go back to normal,” you breathed out shakily. “I just want to be me again.”
“You will be. It’ll get better. And I’ll be here through it all.” You nodded slowly, letting the tears fall freely as Jake pressed a kiss to the side of your head. “I love you so much, Honey.”
“Thank you,” you croaked out., “for not leaving me.”
"I'm never leaving you. You're stuck with me, Honey." He pressed another kiss to your head. "In sickness and in health,” Jake reminded you, causing you to nod slowly.
Getting Maisie settled again into her car seat, Jake took your hand in his own and started to drive the three of you home.
A.N. I am not a medical professional nor am I an expert in postpartum depression/anxiety. This chapter was written based on stories of mothers who have gone through this and some medical research. This is not meant to be inclusive of all of the ways that PPD can present, and it is also not meant to make it seem like PPD is easy to spot, diagnose, or treat.
In this case, Honey’s demeanor in her last trimester and her past struggles already clued in Jake and others. PPD is more common in women who have previously experienced depression or who were depressed during pregnancy, both of which are true of Honey. This isn’t the last that PPD will be mentioned in this story (as that would be inaccurate) but it will be less prominently featured in future chapters if you find it triggering.
I love you, daddy.
The words have been repeating in Jake’s head ever since Josie uttered them. They’re what’s been keeping him going while mission training gets more intense. He spends every free moment with you and Josie, and he feels like you’re becoming a real family. He doesn’t think he’s ever been happier in his life. Not his first time flying a fighter jet, not when he graduated from the academy, not when he got to Top Gun the first time. This, being with you and Josie, makes him happy, gives him purpose. He didn’t know if he’d ever have kids. He’s thought about it when his first niece was born, but he didn’t have a partner, didn’t even date, so it seemed out of reach. And he thought maybe it was for the best. Little did he know he was already a father. When his eldest niece was born Josie was already a year old. And he had no idea.
So now he wants to make up for lost time. And it’s starting to take its toll. He doesn’t get much sleep, but that’s the price he’s willing to pay to spend time with his daughter. And with you.
He’s still focused at work, but it takes a lot more energy than usual.
Coming back to Top Gun and finding out about Josie has changed Jake’s life in a way he never expected it to. And it didn’t only change his plans for the future but his priorities, too. Josie’s nightmare and almost kissing you the other night was an eye opener for him. He wants to spend as much time as possible with the two of you. Wants to be a real family. And now he feels like maybe he’s got a chance. That maybe you finally trust him again and that there are still at least some feelings for him left. He’ll do everything to make you his. He’ll wait forever if he needs to.
He knows that his job will put a strain on things, that he won’t always be there when you need him. And he hates that. If it were up to him he’d never leave you and Josie out of his sight. Okay, that sounds a little creepy, but he doesn’t mean it in an overbearing way. He just doesn’t want to be without you.
He’s certain it won’t be easy for him to get the future he wants, to get the best of both worlds, but he’ll do everything in his power to make it happen. He’s already got the ball rolling on some changes. But he doesn’t know if it’ll work out.
He’s got a long day of training ahead of him, the mission drawing closer quicker than he would like to, especially because he didn’t know where he was headed when he came back. If he came back.
He shakes his head, that’s no way to think about it. This is the most dangerous mission he’ll ever fly and there’s so much at stake. And he needs to get back to you and Josie. He needs to see Josie grow up.
“Let’s go, Hangman.” Coyote’s voice pulls him out of his thoughts and he finally manages to get into his work mindset. He can’t afford to be distracted at work.
✩̿✪̿✩̿
When Jake checks his phone after a day of training the most difficult maneuver he’s ever had to do, he’s got about thirty missed calls from you. His heart drops. Something must’ve happened. You rarely call him. Let alone thirty times.
He calls you back immediately but he only reaches your voice mail. He tries again and again and again.
Nothing.
He’s beyond worried, his thoughts are filled with worst case scenarios as he messily grabs his stuff, doesn’t even change into his regular clothes and bolts out the door. The rest of his squad are eyeing him with confused expressions but he doesn’t even notice them. All he can think about is that he needs to get to you.
Since you’re still not picking up your phone he decides his best bet is driving to your house. See if you’re home.
You’re not.
Your car isn’t in the drive way and when he rings the doorbell no-one opens. All the lights are off and his only option is to wait. He keeps calling but you don’t pick up. He doesn’t know if you’re missing his calls because you don’t notice him calling or if you’re purposely not picking up the phone.
He’s a mess.
It’s almost two hours later when your car finally pulls into your driveway.
✩̿✪̿✩̿
Turns out that Josie broke her arm when she fell from the monkey bars. She doesn’t have to get surgery but they put a cast on her arm that needs to stay on for six weeks. Luckily, Josie is at that age where having a cast is cool and she wants all her friends to sign it. The whole thing might’ve been more traumatising for you than for her. Especially because of your anger towards Jake. He’s tried calling, but you were too stubborn to pick up. You wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine, show him what it’s like. Is it the most healthy thing to do? Definitely not. But you were a mess.
When you turn onto your street you can see Jake sitting on your porch steps. He’s still in his flight suit and his hair looks like he’s run his hand through it at least a million times. He must’ve sat there for a while. It makes you feel bad for a second but then you remember what you’ve gone through the past couple hours and you’re angry again.
“I called you about a hundred times!” Jake says as you step out of the car. He’s walking towards you now, his eyes scanning over your body as if he’s looking for injuries.
“Well, so did I.” You open Josie’s door and help her out of the car. When she sees Jake her eyes light up.
“Daddy, look! I’ve got a cast! They made it my favourite colour!” She shows off the green cast that’s covering her forearm. “Will you sign it?”
“Of course, I’ll sign it.” He forces a smile. “What happened?”
“I fell from the monkey bars on the playground. It hurt a lot but it’s all better now!”
“C’mon, honey let’s go inside.” You gently push against her back. Jake follows you but halts his steps before walking through the door. He looks uncertain.
“Will you stand out there all evening?” Your voice sounds irritated even to your own ears. And you are. There’s so much you wanna say to him right now but you can’t while Josie is around. Jake finally enters your house and closes the front door.
You spend so much time at the hospital that it’s already past Josie’s bedtime, so that’s what you focus on first. You go through the motions, aware that Jake is always close by, watching as you help Josie brush her teeth and read her a bedtime story.
“Now it’s time for you to sleep, honey.” You put the book on her nightstand and watch as her eyelids get heavier by the second. Seems like the adrenaline is finally wearing off.
“Will you sign my cast now, daddy?” She yawns and even though you’re not looking at him you know there’s a small smile on his face.
“Of course.” Then you hear Jake moving through the room to get a pen from her desk. Josie reaches out her arm and when Jake crouches down next to you. He’s entirely too close, so you get up and take three steps back.
Once he’s done he caps the pen, gives Josie a kiss on the forehead and tells her good night one more time. Then the two of you leave the room.
You can feel the tension rising as you make your way to the living room. You’re too wired up to sit down so you just stand there in the middle of the room, looking at him.
“I was worried sick!” Jake presses out. “You call me thirty times and then don’t pick up? Are you serious?”
“Well, you weren’t picking up your phone either.” You cross your arms in front of your chest.
“I was at work and I didn’t have my phone with me.”
You shrug your shoulders. For some reason you wanna be mad at him. You want to channel all your frustrations and nerves and let it out on him. Maybe because you’re mad at yourself for wishing he’d been there with you. Or maybe because he’s the only person here right now. You’re full of emotions that you don’t know how to deal with.
“And I was at the hospital with your daughter while she was in pain!” You feel tears brimming your eyes. “And you weren’t there! You weren’t there and I wanted you there and I hate it! I hate it, Jake! You came waltzing into our lives out of nowhere and now I need you to be there? It’s unfair! We were fine before you came along.”
You can see the hurt in his eyes and it makes you want to shove the words back into your mouth. But that’s not how it works.
“You don’t need me, sweetheart. I know that. You’re the strongest person I know. Raising our girl on your own … And as much as I wanna be there for you every second of every day, I can’t.”
He’s speaking with so much honesty, it makes you deflate. He cares so much about Josie, he didn’t answer his phone because he couldn’t not because he didn’t want to.
“You should’ve heard her scream, Jake. It was horrible.” The tears you’ve been holding in finally roll down your cheeks and within seconds Jake is there, wrapping his arms around you, soothingly rubbing your back.
“I’m sorry I lashed out at you I know you didn’t have a choice. But I was just—“
“It’s okay. C’mere.” He holds you closer and you let yourself relax against his strong body. It’s been so long since you just let go. So that’s what you do, not caring what he thinks while you’re sobbing, no doubt leaving wet stains on his flight suit.
“Why can’t you have a regular office job?” You murmur against his chest and Jake chuckles softly.
“But then we would’ve never met.”
“True.” You let out a sigh. “Still sucks though.”
It’s quiet for a couple moments while Jake softly sways you from side to side. You’ve never felt so safe. Then he clears his throat.
“I’m leaving for the mission soon.” That makes you look at him. “I can’t tell you anything about it, but … it’s dangerous.”
You stiffen, “How dangerous?”
Jake presses his lips together, looking at the ceiling before his eyes find yours again. “The most dangerous I’ve ever been a part of.”
“Jake …”
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. You know I’m the best.” The shakiness in his voice betrays his words but you choose to ignore it.
“How much longer until you leave?”
“I can’t really say. But I’ll come over to say goodbye before I leave… I wouldn’t leave without seeing you guys one more time.” There was so much meaning in him saying one more time, but you choose to ignore that as well. “And then when I’m back … I applied for an instructor position at Top Gun. It’s not an office job but I won’t be deployed as much and I’d be close to you guys.”
“What?” This is the first time you’re hearing about him even thinking about choosing a different career path.
“If everything goes to plan I’ll be moving to San Diego soon.” The corners of his mouth tick up.
“But… but you love flying.”
“I love Josie more. And I’ll still be flying, just not for the same reasons. And I’m not going to lie and tell you this is a completely safe position. It’s still dangerous and things happen. But I don’t wanna miss any more than I’ve already missed when it comes to Josie’s life. I wanna be there for all the important milestones.”
Now you’re crying again but for a whole different reason.
“Jake.”
“When you told me about her my priorities just shifted. For a really long time flying was the only thing I had. The only thing that gave me purpose. But now that I know about Josie … she’s biggest and most important purpose of all.”
You really don’t know what to say, so you don’t say anything and just hold him closer and rest your head against his shoulder.
I Don’t Believe in Coincidences - Glen Powell Imagine
Tumblr media
A/N: I have been working on this one for a few days! Let me know your thoughts and if you want me to continue this one.
When I got the call that I had been hired to work on the new Top Gun movie, I was both terrified and excited. This meant working with a big name like Tom Cruise so I had to be on my A-game. As time went on, I met more of the cast and crew, becoming close friends with a lot of them, especially Monica. Her and I had become so close that most of my days off I came to set anyway to bring her coffee, snacks, and just watch her film. One morning I had brought her coffee and sat in the hair and makeup trailer with her when Glen walked in shortly after. He was late and seemed to be a bit flustered. Monica stood up from the chair, letting him sit before even saying hi. “Morning Glen, what’s got you so frustrated this morning?” She handed him her coffee and he took a long swig before shaking his head. “Emma’s kindergarten is closed today so she has to be here on set, but I can’t really keep an eye on her when I’m in a jet, so I don’t know what to do.” My eyebrows shot to my hairline as I waited for Monica’s response. I had no clue that he was a father. Let alone to a child that old. “Where is she now?” She asked, leaning against the makeup vanity to look him in the eyes. “In my trailer, asleep, since it’s an early call day. I packed all of her stuff but who knows if I’ll be here when she wakes up.” I could tell he seemed frustrated and I wanted to help, but I wasn’t sure how yet. “Can one of your friends or family watch her for the day?” He shook his head, running a hand through his hair and over the back of his neck. “No, unfortunately. So I’ll talk to Tom and get something figured out.” I shared a look with Monica before clearing my throat. “It’s my day off, I’m just here hanging out if you want me to watch her? I have nieces and cousins that age so if you trust me I will gladly watch her today.” Glen turned to face me and he smiled. “That would be…amazing! Wow, thank you.” I just shrug it off and look at him. “Of course! When you’re done with hair and makeup, walk me to your trailer and we can go over what you need me to do and all that!” He nods, seemingly less stressed as he takes another sip of Monica’s coffee before handing it back to her when she makes her way over to me. Glen finished up hair and makeup and Monica made her way to the wardrobe trailer.
I followed Glen back to his trailer and he walked over to the couch to wake up Emma. “‘Em, baby girl, can you wake up for a minute? I need to show you something!” I watched as he softly rubbed her back, kneeling to her level and kissing her on the forehead. Emma picked her head up slightly, rubbing her bright hazel eyes. “Daddy?” He smiled, looking over his shoulder at me and signaling with his head for me to come closer. “Sweetheart, this is Y//N, she’s going to stay with you while daddy works, okay? I’ll come check in whenever I have a break, but listen to her.” She nodded and rubbed her eyes, laying her head back down. Glen stood and turned to me, “There are some of her favorite snacks in the cabinet, and some water in the fridge. My cell number is on the fridge and I’ll leave my card so you guys can get lunch. Thanks again! Make yourself comfortable!” He took his card out of his wallet, left it on the counter and walked out the door to go to wardrobe and get changed. I walked over to the refrigerator and grabbed some water, sitting on the couch, pulling out my phone and saving Glen’s number, just in case we needed it. I sat down near where Emma was sleeping and scrolled on my phone until she stirred, beginning to wake up. I slowly sat my phone down and leaned forward so as not to startle her. “Hey, princess. Good morning, would you like some breakfast? She rubbed her eyes, nodding her head. She said she was going to the bathroom so I got up and got her some fruit snacks and a waffle. I put it on a plate and sat it on the table with a cup of water for her. She came out of the bathroom and sat down to eat her breakfast. “After breakfast, do you want to go watch your dad work for a little bit?” Her eyes got big and she nodded her head excitedly while I ate a protein bar that I keep in my purse. She finished her breakfast and we got her dressed. I braided her hair for her before we went to find Glen. She held my hand as we walked toward the camera setup. We saw Tom sitting with some of the camera men and discussing what they were watching on the screens. I walked up to Tom, scooping Emma up in my arms and letting him know that we were there to see Glen. He pointed to a screen that showed him in the jet. Emma’s eyes got big. “Whoa. My dad is cool!” She. Said, pointing at the screen. We all laughed and I nodded, switching the hip that Emma sat on. “They’re gonna land in five. Wanna take Emma to get her dad some water from craft services?” I nodded, walking toward craft services with Emma. “Can we go see daddy?” She asked. “Yes sweetheart, we will. We are gonna get him a drink, okay? Do you want a snack while we are here?” She nodded her head and we made our way through, picking what she wanted. “What’s your dad’s favorite snack Emma? Should we get him something too?” She nodded, leading me to the snacks and grabbing a bag of popcorn. We got snacks and drinks and made our way back to Tom just as the cast was walking toward us. I put Emma down and she took off running to Glen. “Daddy! We got you snacks!” Glen’s eyes lit up when he knelt down, scooping her up and plopping Emma on his hip. “Well thank you!” he turned to me, “has she been okay this morning? I know this isn’t your job so I really appreciate it.” I just brushed him off. “She’s been amazing! She’s a sweet little girl and she adores you that’s for sure.” I watched as a blush spread across his face, walking to Tom to discuss something about the scene before making his way over to a table with Emma. Emma hopped down off his lap, running over to where I was standing. “Come sit with us, Y/N!” I just knelt down, shaking my head. “It’s okay sweet girl, go spend some time with your dad. I’ll be right here.” She pouted at me, giving me practiced puppy dog eyes that I’m confident she got from her dad. “Pppllleeeaassee?” I giggled and nodded. She took my hand, leading me over to have a seat across from Glen at the table and crawling up beside me.
“She must really like you, she doesn’t attach to people like this very often. She’s usually pretty shy around new people.” I was going to respond until Emma cut in. “She’s fun! And she’s pretty,daddy! Can we keep her?” I tried to cover the giggle that escaped with my hand, but Glen smirked slightly at it before seeing the genuine look in his daughter’s eyes. “She’s not like a pet, baby, you can’t just keep a person. But maybe she’ll join us for dinner tonight as repayment for babysitting?” he asked, gaze moving to look at me. Emma’s head whipped to me with the biggest smile. “Please, Y/N, please?” I just laughed and nodded. “Of course Princess! Now, let’s let your dad work and I think I saw some coloring books in your backpack, wanna go back to the trailer and color?” She beamed at me, hopping down to give her dad a hug. “Bye daddy! I’m gonna go color!” I got up to follow her and waved at Glen as I walked away.
Heart Of Glass-Rooster Bradshaw
Chapter Four.
  Mazy furrowed her eyebrows as she got a text from her dad and Phoenix came around the corner holding her phone.
"Get the text too?" Phoenix held out her phone for Storm.
"Yep," Storm nodded, "I think I know what this is about but we'll see."
The pair of girls got down to the beach by the hard deck climbing out of Phoenix's car and walking down the beach.
Storm tugged off her shirt revealing her black sports bra. Her dark brown hair in two braids a pair of aviator sunglasses balanced on her nose. Phoenix followed taking her shirt off too.
Rooster whistled and wrapped his arms around Storm picking her up.
"Hey!" Storm squirmed giggling in Roosters grip.
"You're so cute," Rooster cooed kissing her bare shoulder and setting her down. Storm blushed and smacked Roosters shoulder.
"Shut up Roos." Storm giggled of embarrassment as the other pilots watched them.
"Don't you ever get sick of them Phoenix?" Payback looked over at her.
"Well uh sometimes but they're pretty adorable." Phoenix shrugged.
Then Maverick and Hondo came down the beach from the Hard Deck. Hondo was carrying two footballs and Mav set up a lawn chair before walking over to the group.
"So now that I know you can all fly I want to do some team building. What better way of team building than to play beach dog fight football. Offense and defense at the same time, Hondo is our ref." Mav smirked at the group and decided teams.
"You better watch out Bradshaw," Phoenix pointed at him as Storm and Mav put their balls together.
"You better watch out for the Mitchell's actually." Hondo laughed. He was also a key part of Mazy’s upbringing he knew how scrappy she is and how scrappy Mav is.
Rooster pointed back at Phoenix and laughed.
"All right all right!" Hangman laughed. Hondo blew his whistle and Mazy shot her ball to Hangman while Mavs to Rooster. The group laughed as they all ran at each other Hangman tossing the ball to Phoenix and Fanboy tackling her.
They went back and forth all of them laughing and having an over all wonderful time.
Storm laughed as Rooster and Coyote chest bumped. The game going on, Storm couldn't help but see the way Mav and Penny were making eyes at each other.
As they started the football up again Hangman tossed the ball to Storm and she ran down the beach but Rooster swooped her up.
"Not so fast!" He chuckled.
"Hey!" Storm laughed trying to squirm out of his grip, "He's cheating!"
Mav came over and took the ball from her running and making a touch down.
"This is unfair!" Storm laughed as Rooster set her down. Storm ran tackling her dad as the group laughed. This is really what they needed.
All of them were equally covered in sand and smiles. They all booed Mav in good fun as he walked up the beach taking a seat in his chair.
"Did you see the way he's looking at Penny." Rooster walked over to Storm.
"Yep," she looked up at him, "Might do him some good."
Rooster nodded in agreement as they started the football game back up. Hangman threw to Storm and she caught it making a touch down everyone was cheering and Rooster swooped her up hauling her onto his shoulders everyone gathering around. They weren't even keeping score it was just for fun now.
Mav watched with a smile as he was getting some where.
"Sir? What is this?" Cyclone looked down at Mav as he had found the group on the beach.
"This is dog fight football. Offense and defense at the same time." Mav smiled proudly.
"Who's winning?" Cyclone asked putting his hands on his hips watching them.
"I think they stopped keeping score awhile ago." Mav shrugged.
"This attachment still has some training to complete. Captain. Every available minute matters."
"Yes, sir." Mav nodded.
"Then why are we out here playing games?" Cyclone fired back.
"You said to create a team, sir. There's your team." Mav pointed at the group.
They all chanted Storm as she held the football up in the air. Rooster helped her down and hugged her. "Hey!" She whined as he had been basically rolling in the sand due to being tackled.
"I'm gonna get my sand flees all over you Mazy." Rooster laughed and kissed her head.
"So nasty," Fanboy giggled.
"That can't be good." Phoenix nodded towards where Cyclone stood.
"Whatever," Storm shrugged, "We needed this."
They all lined up again to play and Payback threw the ball and Hondo caught it and they all looked at each other and tackled Hondo the laughs contagious.
Mazy and Bradley road back to their house in Bradley's beloved Bronco. They were both so tired and so dirty.
"So you think it helped?" Mazy broke the silence. She laid her hand on top of Bradley's as it laid on her thigh.
"I think it's a start," Bradley looked over at her and then back at the road.
"I can agree," Mazy nodded, "I think I might try talking to Mav I'm not sure."
"Yeah? I promise I'll support your decision no matter what Mazy." Bradley smoothly turned into their driveway with one hand turning Mazy on a little bit more.
"That means a lot to me Bradley." Mazy re grabbed his free hand and brought it up higher on her thigh.
"Ooo," Bradley smirked as he put the bronco in park snd turned it off in the garage hitting the garage door close button. Mazy bit her lip and unbuckled. They hadn't had sex since before Rooster was called off on a mission before they were called back.
Both were itching. Both had been wanking off to the thought of the other.
"Meet me in the bedroom in ten." Mazy squirmed out of the Bronco and inside up to the shower.
Mazy had quickly rinsed off the sand and salt water. She dried herself off and let her shortish brown hair down from its braids. She dug through her closet before finding Bradley's favorite set of black lingerie. She slid on the panties and bra she grabbed her lighter off the dresser and lit the candle.
The candle that smelt like pure sex it turned them both on.
Mazy looked in the mirror shaking her hair out a bit, it was slightly crimped from being in braids. Mazy sat on the bed and called for Bradley.
"This is so cliché," Bradley snickered.
"Shut up and come here," Mazy sat up on her knees and pulled him in by the collar of his floral button down.
They locked their lips together not even taking a moment to think. Mazy kept her lips locked in as she began to unbutton the shirt. Bradley brought his hands to her hips and gently squeezed them. Mazy blushed her cheeks heating up and turning red.
She has been with him for so long but so many things turned her on and made her blush like it was their first time.
Mazy got the buttons undone and Bradley shrugged off the shirt. She pulled away taking in his toned chest and his chest tattoo.
A fighter jet with his dads birthday under it.
"Come here," Bradley smiled and they laid down on the bed Mazy cradling his face as they locked lips again. Their tongues probed each others and then Bradley pulled away kissing down her jaw.
"Come on," Mazy smiled just wanting him inside her.
Bradley nibbled on her collarbone and wrapped his lips around a portion of skin sucking a hickey into her.
Bradley brought his hands behind her back and unhooked her lace bra taking them off.
"Fuck, you get hotter every time I see you," Bradley breathed out and held her small chest and kissed around her nipples and sucking at them.
Mazy moaned lulling her head back as Bradley poked all the right buttons. She ran her free hand through his hair holding him closer.
"Fuck. Bradley please." Mazy was dripping and wanted him. Bradley hooked his thumbs around the lace panties sliding them down her legs.
"God I missed this." Bradley smiled.
"If I'm naked you got to be too," Mazy snickered and pulled his boxers down exposing his hard cock, pre cum seeping out.
Bradley sat on the bed and Mazy crawled on top of him sinking herself down onto him. She let out a whine and brought her hands around him as she began to ride him.
"Fuck. Baby girl." Bradley moaned into her gently. Bradley bucked his hips to meet her advances as they both were inching closer from being so desperate for months.
"I hate when I can't have you." Mazy moaned scratching his back as he hit just the right spots on her.
"I hate being away from you," Bradley gripped her hips tighter.
"Bradley I'm so close." Mazy whined she leaned forward into him speeding up her hip movements.
"Me too," he grunted as he sped up his thrusting before releasing inside her a loud gasp coming out of him.
"Fuckin' A." Mazy collapsed fully onto him as she squeezed around him riding out the after shock.
"You're so gorgeous," Bradley cooed as she circled her hips a few times and rolled off of him, “I missed my cowgirl.”
“Lord,” Mazy laughed as her heart raced from the work out.
“I can’t wait to marry you,” Bradley laid on his side twirling Mazy’s brown hair; Although, Mazy would deny it she looked just like her father.
The same piercing green eyes, dark, cocoa hair. It was an undeniable fact. Freckles sprinkled her fare skin, Bradley could sit and stare at her for forever. She was the uttermost gorgeous person he had ever seen.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Master List
Tumblr media
“You’re not doing anything with Dove today?” Coyote asked Jake as they jogged their normal route.
“No, she said that Phoenix was taking her out.”
“What’re they doing?”
“I don’t know. Dove didn’t say,” Jake stated, shrugging his shoulders.
~~~~~
# 44 - Gotten a Pedicure
“So, what are we doing next?” Dove asked Phoenix.
They sat side by side at a nail salon, getting a pedicure together. And Dove, even though salons usually gave her anxiety, was enjoying herself. It helped to have Phoenix with her.
“I thought we’d start small and work our way up,” Phoenix replied, turning to Dove.
“Like what?”
“We’ll just have a girls day. Do stuff that you wouldn’t do if Hangman was with you,” Phoenix stated, causing Dove to nod. “Maybe stuff that you’ve wanted to do for a while, but just never got around to doing.”
“I can think of a few things.”
~~~~~
# 45 - Bought Fishnet Stockings
“I don’t know what I’ll wear these with,” Dove admitted as she picked out a pair of fishnet stockings from the rack. “But I’ve always wanted a pair.”
“And that’s why we’re doing this,” Phoenix stated, steering Dove towards the cashier.
~~~~~
# 46 - Gone Wedding Dress Shopping
“Nat, I feel bad,” Dove whispered to Phoenix as they looked through the racks of dresses. “There’s actual brides here.”
“So what? Just pick some dresses. You’re not hurting anyone.”
As Dove continued to browse through the dresses, a consultant approached them. She greeted them kindly and Dove tried to not sweat when she was confronted with the fact that she was not engaged and she was here with a fake engagement ring and a made up fiance.
“So, you’re the bride to be?” the consultant asked Dove, who smiled sheepishly.
“Yes, I am.”
“When’s your wedding?”
“Next summer,” Dove stated noncommittally.
“Oh, so you have time. Tell me what you’re looking for.”
Dove listed off some details that she had considered for her actual wedding dress. With those details in mind, the consultant led Dove and Phoenix around the store, picking out some dresses and asking Dove about her fake wedding. Phoenix was calm beside her but Dove was not similarly relaxed.
“So, tell me about your groom,” the consultant stated, causing Dove to sweat some more. “Do you have any pictures of the two of you?”
“Uh, yeah, of course, I do,” Dove laughed nervously.
Shooting Phoenix a look, Dove pulled out her phone. The photo of her and Jake from when they were stuck up on the ferris wheel together the night before popped up first and Dove showed it to the consultant to get it over with.
“Oh, you two are adorable together.”
“Thank you.”
“What’s his name?”
“Jake,” Dove answered honestly. Because it was Jake in the photo.
“And how’d you two meet?”
“We work together.”
“And how long have you been together for?”
“Eight months,” Dove lied easily.
Dove had been at her position at NAS North Island for eight months. It had been eight months since she had been assigned to the Dagger Squad.
“I know it seems rushed, but—” Dove started to over-explain.
“—When you know, you know,” the consultant assured Dove, smiling kindly. She lifted up the wedding dresses that they had already picked out. “I’ll go put these in a dressing room. Come back after you’ve done your last look through.”
“Thank you.”
The consultant walked away, leaving Dove and Phoenix alone for a moment. Dove could feel Phoenix’s gaze on her, but didn’t meet her stare.
“Freudian slip?” Phoenix suggested to Dove.
“Shut up.”
~~~~~
# 47 - Gone into a Lingerie Store
“I already hate this and we’re only in the parking lot,” Dove sighed, staring up at the store.
“Why?”
“Because the women who work in these stores are the most judgmental, aggressive, and condescending salespeople on the planet,” Dove huffed, turning to Phoenix with an annoyed expression. “Why do you think I stay away from these places?”
“If they act that way, we’re going to tell them to mind their business. Now, come on.”
Dove sighed, but got out of the car anyway. She followed Phoenix into the store and was relieved to find that it was not overrun with judgy salespeople. Then again it was midday on a weekday and there appeared to only be two salespeople in the entire store.
“You’ll be fine,” Phoenix repeated, before dragging Dove deeper into the store.
~~~~~
Jake sat around with the other Daggers—minus Phoenix—for a lazy afternoon, floating around ideas for that night. Jake, bored with the conversation already, pulled out his phone and looked at Dove’s list for any updates.
Pedicure . . . fishnets . . . wedding dress . . . lingerie?
Quickly setting his phone back down, Jake turned back to the conversation, trying and failing at looking casual. And to not let his mind wander too far.
~~~~~
# 48 - Bought Lingerie
“Buy for yourself, not for anyone else. Buy something that makes you feel good.”
“I’m just looking for something that I can actually get into at this point,” Dove replied, grimacing as she picked up another set. “I mean, what is the point of all of these ribbons? I feel like I’m going to trip and slam my head into the wall trying to get into this thing.”
“Just find something that works for you. Don’t worry about all of this extra crap.”
Dove looked through what felt like half a store’s worth of options before she settled on a simpler set. Nothing too crazy, but the lace pattern was appealing and it was surprisingly soft. And the look of the bra alone made her feel confident about herself.
If only she had something or someone to wear it for.
~~~~~
# 49  - Gone to an Adult Shop
“Come on, it’s no big deal,” Phoenix stated, pulling Dove into the store. “You already bought lingerie. This is just another step in that process.”
Dove winced when she saw some of the items that were up on the wall. She turned back to Phoenix, practically clutching her metaphorical pearls.
“Where the hell is that supposed to go?” Dove glanced down at her pelvis before turning back to Phoenix with a slightly terrified expression. “I don’t have space for that! No one has space for that. Where the hell are your organs supposed to go?”
“We’re not going for anything crazy,” Phoenix stated reassuringly. “Just trying to introduce you to some stuff to, uh, help you out a little.”
~~~~~
# 50 - Bought an Adult Toy
“This one has plenty of different settings, so you can play around with it and see what works for you and what doesn’t,” the attendant explained, causing Dove to nod. “Everyone is different, so there’s no shame in finding what works for you.”
“Thank you.”
“See that wasn’t so bad,” Phoenix stated, walking with Dove after she picked up a box.
“No, it actually wasn’t.”
Dove was about to turn for the register when she caught sight of some handcuffs. The dainty, fluffy pink fur didn’t spark any interest in her. But when she found a more industrial pair, Dove couldn’t help but pick up a pair to inspect. She completely missed the look on Phoenix’s face at her choice.
“Well, I guess it’s on sale,” Dove reasoned to herself.
After a few more moments of quiet deliberation, Dove shrugged her shoulders and walked towards the counter with the handcuffs in hand. Phoenix stood there for a moment, still shocked at Dove’s choice.
“It’s always the quiet ones.”
After Dove paid for her items, they made their way back out to the car. Looking down at what she had already purchased that day, Dove quietly had a discussion with herself before turning back to Phoenix.
“I have an idea. For what to do next.”
“Of course. What is it?”
~~~~~
# 51 - Gotten a Tattoo
Phoenix pulled her phone out as Dove laid on her side, talking casually with the tattoo artist. When she saw that Jake was calling her, Phoenix excused herself from Dove’s side. Walking out to the parking lot, Phoenix answered the call.
“Yes?”
“What the hell are you doing, Trace!?”
“Start over, Bagman,” Phoenix warned him.
“You’re making her get a tattoo?” Jake rephrased, though the tension was clear in his tone.
“I didn’t make her get a tattoo. This was her idea.”
“You think that I believe you?”
“I don’t care what you believe. It’s the truth. She said that she’s floated the idea of getting one for a while and she decided to finally do it.”
“And you let her?”
“She is an adult. She can make her own choices about her own body. And no one has the right to tell her that she can’t,” Phoenix warned him. “Including you, Bagman.”
“What if she regrets it?”
“She can get it lasered off. And we all know that Dove doesn’t do anything without going through the consequences a thousand times.” Glancing back at the tattoo parlor, Phoenix added, “And when she tells you about it—and this goes for all of you idiots—you’re going to tell her that it’s great. Got it?”
Dove stepped out into the light as Phoenix wrapped up her phone call. Phoenix spotted her and hung up the phone without so much as a goodbye.
“How do you feel?”
“It stings,” Dove admitted honestly, pulling her shorts down a little to show Phoenix the bandage, “but I feel . . . I don’t know how to describe it. Just . . . free.”
“You are,” Phoenix stated, smiling proudly. “You’re in charge of your life. No one else.”
“Yeah, I am,” Dove agreed, nodding with a wide smile.
~~~~~
# 52 - Sang Karaoke in Front of Strangers
“And girls! They wanna have fu-un! Oh, girls just wanna have—that’s all the really wa-ah-an-ah-an-ah-ant! Some fu-uh-uh-uh-un! When the working day is done, oh girls, they wanna have fun!”
Phoenix and Dove shared a laugh as the song finished up. The bar where they were standing was pretty much empty, but the one bartender on duty clapped for them. Dove laughed and waved to them as she hopped off the small stage.
~~~~~
# 53 - Sunbathed Topless
“I need to get softer beach towels,” Dove commented, causing Phoenix to pick her head up and look over at her.
“Are you planning on doing this more often?”
The two of them were out in Penny’s backyard to sunbathe in the afternoon. Dove shrugged her shoulders as she laid on her stomach, calm and relaxed.
“Maybe. If I find safe spots to do it.”

# 54 - Dyed Your Hair
Putting a trash bag over Dove’s torso just in case, Phoenix started lightly spraying the dye onto her hair. Dove closed her eyes and just let Phoenix work, and missed Phoenix’s concerned look as she finished up the spray.
“Alright, how does that look? I think I’ll open the window.”
Dove stood up from the tub and walked over to the mirror to stare at her new reflection and instantly grimaced. The red hair color was fairly bright. It wasn’t quite a fire engine red, nor was it orange, it was some other odd reddish color that Dove was going to immediately wash out of her hair.
“Well, that’s off the list. Forever.”
~~~~~
# 55 - Drank Pickle Juice
“Do you normally do this?” Dove asked Phoenix, sitting at her kitchen table with an old towel wrapped around her freshly washed hair.
The spray on hair dye had come out easily, but she was going to have to scrub her shower later. Phoenix placed a glass in front of her and Dove picked it up to inspect it. Taking a small sip, Dove wrinkled her nose and slowly set it back down.
“I think I’ve had enough of the food challenges,” Dove admitted, slowly opening her eyes.
“You’ll have to tell everyone else that. They want to go to a new bar tonight,” Phoenix stated, showing Dove her texts with Bob.
“A cowboy bar?” Dove read, looking up at Phoenix. “They finally let Jake have his way?”
“Apparently.”
~~~~~
# 56 - Ridden a Mechanical Bull
Jake and Coyote walked into the cowboy bar together and started their search for the other Daggers, who had all apparently arrived before them.
“Found ‘em,” Coyote stated, nudging Jake in the side.
Jake turned his head and recognized the woman climbing up on the back of the mechanical bull. And even if he didn’t, the fact that Phoenix, Bob, and Rooster were standing around the area and cheering her on would have cleared it up.
Dove focused on the task at hand, locking her legs around the bull and prepared to move her body in time with the bull. Jake and Javy made their way over to the area as the mechanical bull started to move.
“Yeah, Dove!” Phoenix cheered for her.
“She can really move her hips well,” Rooster commented, staring down Jake as he spoke. “Don’t you agree, Hangman?”
Jake glared straight into Bradley’s soul before turning back to Dove. She managed to hold on for longer than anyone expected, but with a quiet giggle, Dove dropped onto the mat. Rolling onto her knees, Dove crawled to get off the mat.
Jake offered her a hand and she took it without hesitation. Hopping down from the mat, she moved to pull her boots on again as Bob climbed up onto the mat to go next. Dove stood up slowly, offering him a smile that seemed to make time slow around them.
“Long time no see,” Dove stated teasingly. “Did you miss me?”
“Well, my day was a lot less entertaining without you in it,” Jake commented, causing Dove to raise an eyebrow.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You make life . . . interesting,” Jake replied, missing the side eye that Coyote and Rooster shared behind him.
“Interesting?” Dove repeated, causing Jake to wince. Laughing, she nudged him again. “I’m just teasing, Jake. Lighten up. Relax. Have a drink.”
She walked past him, practically serene, and over to where Phoenix was standing, cheering on Bob, who was still hanging on. Coyote wrapped an arm around Jake’s shoulder and Jake promptly ignored his shit-eating grin.
“You know, of all the words you could have used to describe her, you chose ‘interesting’?”
“Shut up, Javy.”
“To think I took advice from you. No wonder I don’t have a girlfriend.”
~~~~~
# 57 - Given a Fake Name
Dove stood at the bar with Phoenix, waiting to order another drink. The other Daggers were waiting at their table, which they could see from the bar. Folding her arms on the bar, Dove glanced to her right as a man took the spot next to her.
“Have you been waiting a while?” he asked, causing Dove and Phoenix to turn to him.
“Yeah, but they’re clearly understaffed, so we don’t mind,” Dove returned politely.
“Have you been here before?” the man continued.
“No, it was recommended by one of our friends,” Dove explained calmly. She shared a look with Phoenix, who subtly shrugged her shoulders.
“And what do you think about it so far?”
“The mechanical bull is a unique touch.”
“Have you been on it yet?” the man asked, leaning on the bar with a smile.
“Yeah, earlier.”
“How’d you do?”
“I think they said nine seconds.”
“That’s amazing for your first time up on one.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m Jared,” he introduced, offering his hand for her to shake.
Dove quickly came up with a fake name and introduced herself back to him. Shaking his hand in return, she turned back to the bartender. She and Phoenix shared a side glance before Jared asked her another question.
~~~~~
# 58 - Been Bought a Drink
Jake glared at the back of Jared’s head, watching the interaction between Dove and the stranger intently. It was a bar and Jared was a random man who walked up to Dove and Phoenix. Jake had every right to be concerned, he reasoned to himself.
“I’m going up there,” Jake stated gruffly.
“Did he do something?” Payback asked, turning around to look at the bar.
“He’s loitering.”
“It looks like they’re just talking. Dove doesn’t even look anxious.”
“No, he’s bad news,” Jake insisted.
“Because he’s doing something wrong or because he’s flirting with Dove?” Coyote questioned, turning to his best friend. “Would you react the same way if he was showing more of an interest in Phoenix?”
“I’m going up there,” Jake insisted, ignoring Javy’s question.
Meanwhile, at the bar, Dove and Jared had finally waved over the bartender. Dove ordered her drink, but before she could hand over her card, Jared offered to put it on his tab. And even though Dove insisted that she could pay for her own drinks, Jared insisted.
“My treat. And besides, it’s your first time here. I have to make sure that you have a good time, so you’ll come back again.”
“Thank you,” Dove replied quietly, quickly moving into unfamiliar territory.
While they waited for their drinks to be made, Jared continued to ask Dove perfectly normal surface level questions. Dove was analytical by nature and Jared didn’t seem to ask her anything that was a blatant red flag. But she was still cautious. The bartender handed over their drinks before Dove turned back to Jared.
“Thank you for the drink, but we really should get back to our friends,” Dove stated politely, offering Jared a small smile.
“Before you go,” Jared stated, causing Dove to pause, “do you think that I could get your number? Or maybe, at least, a dance?”
“Um,” Dove began, trying to find the right words.
“She has a boyfriend,” Phoenix interjected, causing Jared’s face to fall.
“Oh.”
“Sorry, I was trying to tell you before you bought the drink,” Dove replied, half-lying, half-telling the truth. She did tell him that she wanted to pay for her own drink.
“Do you guys need help?” Jake asked, appearing from the crowd.
Phoenix rolled her eyes at the subtle territorial display—or not so subtle, depending on who you asked—that Jake put on. Jared, quickly assessing the fact that Jake was built enough to kick his ass if he really wanted to—and Jake looked like he wanted to—slipped away, leaving Dove and Phoenix at the bar with Jake.
“Are you alright?” Jake asked Dove, who nodded in return.
“Yeah, he seemed harmless. We’re fine.”
“You’re sure?”
“I’m fine, Jake.”
“I’ll take a tequila shot,” Phoenix told the bartender, who nodded and moved to pour one for her.

# 59 - Danced with Someone at a Bar
“I love this song!” Phoenix yelled, getting to her feet.
The Dagger Squad had settled around their table, enjoying their drinks and catching up, but Phoenix was itching to move. Phoenix reached over and grabbed Bob’s arm, practically pulling him straight out of his seat.
“Let’s go dance!”
Jake watched Phoenix drag Bob off her before turning to look at Dove, who was already staring back at him. Turning so that his whole body was facing her, Jake leaned in closer to her so that he didn’t need to scream over the music.
“Do you want to dance too?”
“Do you want me to make your night more interesting?” Dove quipped back, though she looked unsure of herself. “You know that I have two left feet, Jake.”
“I’ll lead.”
“If I fall on my face—”
“—I won’t let you fall,” Jake promised, causing Dove to pause as her cheeks warmed.
“Alright.”
Jake and Dove left the Dagger table and walked out onto the crowded dance floor. Dove reached out and kept a tight hold on Jake’s hand, worried about losing him in the swarm. Jake managed to find a space for them before turning back to Dove. She released his hand and smiled anxiously.
“Just follow me,” Jake called over the music.
Dove nodded and just sort of swayed to the music. The crowd shifted around them and pushed them closer together. Jake put his hands on Dove’s waist to keep her steady on her feet. And Dove, either subconsciously or consciously leaned against him too, letting Jake wrap an arm around her.
They swayed together to the music as Jake reached for Dove’s hand. Twirling her around gently, Jake wasn’t aware that he was giving her the most genuinely joyful smile and that his eyes never once deviated from her.
From the way that her nose crinkled as she laughed to the soft look in her eye as she turned back around, he was entirely and completely captivated by her.
Dove spun around again and laughed as she leaned against Jake, still a bit clumsy. Jake wrapped an arm around her waist, not just to steady her this time. But to unabashedly keep her close to him. And Dove didn’t push away from him.
From across the room, Coyote, Rooster, and Payback sat together, all quietly watching the interaction between Jake and Dove. Coyote appeared tired, not from the night or the alcohol. But from watching Hangman and Dove continue to tiptoe around each other.
“Have we tried just pushing their heads together yet?” Payback asked, taking a sip of his beer.
“I’m really considering it,” Coyote replied, shaking his head.
“I can flirt with Dove some more,” Rooster offered, causing Payback and Coyote to turn to him.
“I’m honestly worried he’ll rip your head off at this point,” Coyote stated, turning to Rooster. “He turns almost feral.”
“I know. But I’m really enjoying pissing him off.”

# 60 - Shown Someone Else Your Tattoo
Standing outside the bar beside Jake’s truck, Dove turned around. She had to unbutton her jean shorts to do it, but she pulled the waistband of her shorts and her underwear down a little to show Jake her tattoo. She had placed a protective clear patch over it for her shower and just decided to wear it to the bar as well.
“It’s not very large, but I’ve wanted it for a while,” she explained, causing Jake to nod.
“What made you pick that one?”
“I was always drawing stars when I was anxious when I was in college,” Dove admitted, glancing back at her tattoo. “And this was just a group of them.”
“It looks good,” Jake complimented Dove, causing her to smile.
“Thank you. I’m really glad that I got it, actually.”
“It suits you.”
Pulling her shorts up and buttoning them once again, Dove turned around to face Jake. She leaned back against his truck, folding her hands behind her back.
“Are you excited for the team trip?”
“I guess.”
“You’re the one who voted for the lake house,” Dove reminded him.
“I just didn’t want to go to Vegas.” Shifting his weight on his feet, Jake met Dove’s gaze once again. “But I was thinking . . .”
“Yeah?” Dove asked softly.
“Did you want to leave maybe two days before everyone else? There’s a few more things I think that we can knock off the list if we do.”
“Just the two of us?”
“I mean . . . yeah.”
“I’m just teasing you, Jake,” Dove mused, pushing off of his truck. “Just tell me when I need to be ready to leave, and I’ll be ready.” Offering him a soft smile and letting her touch on his arm linger, Dove added, “Goodnight, Jake.”
“Night, Dove.”
Jake turned and watched Dove walk over to her car. He stood there until Dove got into her car and drove home, trying to keep his mind focused. But that was becoming more and more difficult around Dove these days.

“Wake up!” An unfamiliar voice startled you. “Wake uuup!” The voice was squeaky and accompanied by a bell-like giggle. “Uncle Jake, why isn’t she waking up! Maybe you should wake her up like Snow White!” You could hear your boyfriend’s laugh through the sleepy haze you were beginning to surface from.
“Nah, Sophie. Let’s just wake her up gently. The both of us.” You felt your shoulder warm with the touch of Jake’s large hand and much smaller one underneath it. Your eyes fluttered open and you stretched. “Hey there princess.” The small girl next to Jake giggled again.
“Why didn’t you wake me up?” Your voice was scratchy with sleep. The last thing you remember was sitting on the couch. Your legs had been tangled with his, your head on his firm chest.  A Christmas Story was on the TV and the last thing you remembered was Ralphie Parker getting a boot to the forehead.
“You just looked so cute.” Sophie laughed at her uncle’s words and you couldn’t help but join in. She was an adorable girl with strawberry blonde hair and green eyes similar to those of her uncle. “Anytime you aren’t snoring is pretty cute.” His comment, which was so typical, made you roll your eyes. You knew he probably had a point. You did snore sometimes.
“You must be Sophie!” Your attention was now on Jake’s niece. Her head was moving up and down in an enthusiastic nod. Her smile was wide enough for you to see that two teeth were missing. You scooted into a sitting position.
“Yeah!” Without warning the girl threw herself in your lap.
“Woah!” Jake placed his hand on your back to keep you from toppling over. You let him know you were good  and positioned the girl to make both of you more comfortable. “A little warning next time, Soph!”
“She’s okay. You’re just excited, aren’t you Sophie?” She was nodding once again. “Who wouldn’t be with Santa coming tomorrow?!” The mention of Santa and Christmas Eve had Sophie wiggling with joy. You were still trying to fully wake up, but her childlike wonderment was infectious as she talked about Christmas Eve. Both you and Jake let her ramble for a few moments. After she talked about all the different cookies she wanted to leave Santa, Jake plucked the girl from your lap and told her to go find one of her brothers. Once she was gone, you looked at him. His eyes were roaming over your face. “Do I have sleep lines?” You started feeling around your temple. “Oh my God, did I drool?” Jake laughed.
“You’re good darlin’.” He stood up and held a hand out for you. You took it, looking down at your clothes, running a hand over some wrinkles. “I said you were good.” His tone was light, but had an edge of bossiness that was typical of him. “Come on, there are people I want you to meet.”
You let him tug you towards the kitchen, nerves gripping you. You weren’t quite sure why you were nervous considering how well things went with his parents. They really made you feel as though you’d always been one of them. That morning you and Vicki drove down to the feed store to pick up an order that had come in. As you loaded large bags into the bed of the truck you’d been in, the two of you joked around like people who knew each other for years would. It left you feeling like you were in a dream and you weren’t sure you wanted to wake up.
“There they are!” Thomas yelled out loudly. You smiled shyly, fighting the urge to raise your hand in an awkward wave. There were multiple pizza boxes sitting on the kitchen island, which several people were standing around. Vicki and Thomas you knew, as well as Julie, who was standing next to a man that held baby Lily. There was another man to his left and as you took him in you noticed several features that Vicki also had. That must have been Jackson. A short woman, with red hair, stood in front of him. The only people that were missing were Jennifer and her family, and June. Both of them would be in from out of town the next day.
“Yeah, here we are.” Jake’s hands were on your shoulders, he was standing at your back. The heat coming off of his body was comforting. “I don’t know about y’all, but I’m ready to eat!”
Jake filled you in earlier in the day. On the twenty-third there were always carolers in the small downtown you’d been driven through the day before. Hot chocolate was typically sold by the high school band as a fundraiser. There was also a local couple that dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus and walked around entertaining little children. He explained it as a low-key affair that had a lot of heart. It had been going on as long as Jake could remember and had become a family tradition. They’d always eat pizza, drive around to look at lights, and then end up downtown to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
“Yeah, Nana! We’re hungry!” A young teenage boy echoed, walking in. Sophie was at one elbow and another young boy was at the other.
“Come here, squirt!” Jake growled, throwing his arm around his oldest nephew, Will, drawing him into a headlock.
“I’m not a squirt!” The boy replied, his voice cracking in that familiar pubescent way. He squirmed away from his uncle.
“No, you aren’t, but he is!” Jake bent down to pick up Cole. You remember in the weeks leading up to this time with his family, you made Jake quiz you on who was who. Names were not hard for you, so you were able to pick up on all the members quickly. Cole was laughing as his uncle attacked him with tickles. Sophie was jumping up and down, adding to the chaos. You could only imagine the energy that would be in the air once the rest of the Seresin family arrived.
“Come on, knuckleheads,”  Jackson spoke up, opening some of the pizza boxes. “Let’s eat.” And, as if his words were magic, the kids (and Jake) straightened up and got in line.
“They are always such a rowdy bunch.” The redheaded woman spoke as you walked over to grab a plate. “Hi, I’m Claire.”  You introduced yourself to her in return. “Whenever Jake comes to town, the kids are extra crazy.”
“Yeah, I’m picking up on that.” You laughed.
The kitchen was filled with noise as everyone moved around and began eating. Outside the window the sun was setting, which meant that soon you would all be perusing toward town, taking in the magic of different lights.
After grabbing a couple of slices of pizza, you found yourself squished in between Jake and Sophie. Claire tried to pull her daughter away, reminding her of her manners, but you let her know it was okay. Throughout dinner you listened, with one ear, to Jake entertain Sophie, Cole, and Will with stories about his most recent mission. Details were exaggerated and sound effects were incorporated. While he did that, you engaged in conversation with Claire about a show you heard her mention while you were each up grabbing your food.
Once dinner and conversation were done (and cowboy hats grabbed) you all divided up amongst two different vehicles. Jake, you, Julie, her fiance Luke, and Lily piled in their mid-sized SUV, while Vicki and Thomas squeezed into Claire and Jackson’s Suburban. That forced the three kids in the back seat. Jake and Jackson both had walkie-talkies clipped to their jackets. Jake explained that it was so both vehicles could talk while looking at lights, without interrupting any music. The Seresin’s were all about feeling the spirit of Christmas.
Lily sat between you and Jake, buckled tightly into her carseat. Julie said they could pull up the back seats to make things more comfortable, but you told her it was fine. It gave you an up close look at just how soft Jake could be. You were enjoying this new side to him. He sang to her when a particularly good song would come on. While he didn’t have the best voice, the slightly accented twang he added made you melt. The man would also tell jokes to the other kids over the walkie-talkie.
“Soph’, what does Santa call a reindeer with no eyes?” He asked as your caravan pulled in front of a house that had a yard littered with glowing reindeer.
“I don’t know, Uncle J!” Came Sophie’s sassy reply. You snickered. Her attitude reminded you so much of the one her uncle usually displayed. You locked eyes with Julie who nodded, having picked up on your line of thought.
“I have no eye deer!” As he delivered the punchline he looked over at you, his smile so wide it practically took over his face. Luke snorted which made Julie laugh. Lily cooed from her carseat. You turned your attention to her, brushing her forehead with the pad of your thumb.
“Your uncle is so silly, isn’t he? Isn’t he?” She cooed again and you laughed, looking at Jake pointedly.
“Uncle J, that was so bad!” Will’s voice came over the walkie-talkie. It was impossible to miss Sophie laughing in the background.
“Some would say it’s so bad, I’m on the naughty list right?” You, Julie, and Luke all groaned at the same time. Before you really knew what you were doing, you reached over the carseat and grabbed the walkie-talkie from Jake’s hand. He looked at you, bewildered.
“Someone come get this man!” You said into the receiver after pressing the orange button on the side. There was silence for a minute before Jackson’s voice filled the car.
“Sorry darlin’,” If Jake wasn’t sitting right in front of you, you would have sworn he was the one speaking. “We’ve been dealing with him for over three-decades. It’s your turn now.”
More taunts, bad jokes, and laughs were exchanged as you all continued to look at lights that decorated homes that were a part of Jake’s past. Jake would tell you some random fact from his childhood as you passed by the different houses. Julie would chime in occasionally, adding to the stories he told. You learned about his friends and the shenanigans they got up to, especially while in high school. There were pranks and hijinks of all kinds thought up in the houses that were being driven by.
Eventually the car turned down a street where vehicles were parked on both sides. It took a minute to find a spot, but eventually two were found not that far from each other. Together, as a family, you all walked up the sidewalk, towards the warm light radiating from the busy part of town. Sophie, Claire, and Julie were singing about Frosty the Snowman. As you kept walking the crowd seemed to be growing.
While the downtown area looked charming during the day, there was something magical about it at night. The lights mixed with the music from the carol singers mixed with the fake snow floating through the air created an energy and excitement that you had not experienced since you were a young child. You were so enchanted by everything around you, you didn’t realize you’d stopped walking.
“Darlin’?” Jake called out. He was looking over his shoulder, his family still walking ahead. You were trying to find the words to explain how you felt. “You okay?” You nodded as he walked to you.
“It just…” The words weren’t coming to you, but he waited patiently. “Thank you for bringing me.” His smile was dazzling and dangerous. You tucked one arm around under his denim jacket, and wrapped it around his waist. You lifted the other, using your hand to tip his sand colored Stetson up. It would get in the way of your goal. Without mentioning this goal, Jake understood and pressed his lips against yours. As you pulled apart you could hear Cole behind the man in your arms.
“Come one guys!” There were strangers moving around you, smiling as Cole brought attention to the obvious fact that you were not with the family who was stopped at the hot chocolate booth.
Jake moved your arm out from underneath his jacket, but didn’t let go of your hand. His palm was warm against yours and it grounded you. He pulled you towards the booth and somehow managed to take a few dollar bills from his wallet with one hand. He handed it to the high schooler behind the table and you both grabbed a cup. You never thought that being in Texas with Jake and his family would feel as right as it did. It was nothing like you expected, but in the best way possible…And there were still three days left and more family to meet.

Jake walked out of the maternity ward, causing your extended family to quickly get to their feet. He let out an incredulous laugh as everyone moved to gather around him, still not fully believing that he was officially a father now. There were a handful of questions thrown at him, but Jake was still lost in his own world.
He was a dad. He had a little girl waiting for him.
“How are they?” Penny asked, her hand on his shoulder bringing him out of his stupor.
“They’re both healthy. She did great and there weren’t any complications. Baby Girl came out kicking and screaming. She’s six pounds, three ounces. And she's sixteen inches long.”
“And her name?” Maverick asked softly.
“She wanted to tell everyone all together,” Jake replied with a wide smile. And it was going to be near impossible to remove the smile from his face. That awestruck, completely in love smile was practically permanent at this point. “So, she told me to come and bring you all back.”
The group left the waiting room, starting the short trip down the hall to visit you and your baby. Coyote quickly pulled Jake into a bear hug, squeezing the life out of his best friend. Releasing him, Coyote smacked Jake supportively on the back.
“I knew you’d make back it in time,” Coyote replied with a grin.
You were cuddling with your daughter on the hospital bed when there was a light knock on the door. You looked up and smiled softly when you saw your family. And even though you were clearly exhausted, you were absolutely radiating joy. And with the beautiful baby girl in your arms, it wasn’t hard to figure out why.
“Hi, everyone.”
“How are you feeling?” Penny asked, moving to sit beside your bed.
“Tired. But she’s finally here.”
You smiled contentedly as you rested your head on top of your daughter’s, still soaking it all in. Sitting up more, you shifted your hold on your daughter, gently rolling towards your family so that they could all see her. You shared a smile with Jake before staring down at your daughter.
“Everyone, meet Sara Seresin.”
“Sarah . . . Seresin?” Maverick repeated slowly, seemingly wincing as he did so.
“After Sarah Kazansky?” Emma asked kindly.
“No, there’s no ‘h.’”
“Well, that makes a huge difference,” Coyote replied, bobbing his head up and down as he shared a side-eye look with his wife.
“Sara Seresin,” Phoenix stated, staring at you like you had grown two heads in the process.
“That’s . . . a beautiful name,” Penny assured you, pinching Maverick in the side.
Jake snapped a picture of everyone’s reaction before turning back to you and your daughter. You tried to fight the laugh at your simple prank, but soon enough, a giggle escaped your lips. Ignoring everyone’s incredulous stares, you adjusted your daughter’s hat.
“We didn’t name her that,” Jake told everyone, earning a series of sighs of relief.
“Oh thank god,” Maverick stated, holding a hand to his heart. Patting your brother on the back, he added, “No offense, Bradley.”
Your brother shot Maverick a look as Jake leaned down to pick up your daughter. Jake carefully took your daughter into his arms, holding her gently against his chest as he turned to the crowd. Everyone seemed to hold their breaths as Jake slowly moved his gaze from his daughter’s face to them.
“We named her Maisie.”
"Maisie Caroline," you added softly.
“Oh, that’s so beautiful,” Penny cooed, squeezing you into her side.
“Much better than Sara Seresin,” Coyote stated under his breath, earning a side-eye look from Bradley. “What?”
“Who wants to hold her?” Jake asked, looking around the room.
Maverick urged Bradley forward and stepped to the side, eyes already brimming with happy tears. Bradley held out his arms and Jake carefully placed your daughter into them. Bradley gently cradled your daughter against his chest, staring down at her with wide eyes as he felt her wiggle.
“I was expecting her to be bigger,” Bradley admitted quietly, turning back to you.
“I’m glad that she wasn’t,” you replied, earning a round of quiet laughs.
“She’s so beautiful,” Emma praised, looking over Bradley’s arm at your daughter.
You and Jake shared a look before you smiled and nodded, reaching out to gently nudge your husband forward. Jake turned back to your brother as Bradley adjusted your daughter’s blanket. He stared down at your daughter as he came to stand beside Bradley.
“Meet your goddaughter,” Jake stated quietly, causing Bradley to turn to him with shock.
“You’re serious?”
“If you don’t want to be—”
“—Thank you,” Bradley interjected instead before Jake could retract his statement. Glancing down at his niece, who was peacefully snuggling into her blanket, Bradley turned back to Jake. “Really, thank you. I know that I wasn’t very supportive of your relationship in the beginning.”
“That might be an understatement,” Jake deadpanned.
“And we didn’t get along for a long time.”
“Since we met.”
“And I stand by it.”
“As do I,” Jake agreed, ignoring the fact that you were rolling your eyes at them.
“But Emma and I are here for you guys if you need anything. Babysitting. Deployments. Anything. Really. You’re a part of our family now. Forever, actually, because of Maisie.”
Jake nodded in appreciation before Bradley turned to give your daughter to Maverick. Although Jake trusted both men with his life—and already had—he couldn’t help but hover during the transfer. His hands were practically itching to cradle your daughter as Maverick carefully took her into his arms.
“He’s already not letting her out of his sight,” Penny whispered to you, amused.
“Not if he can help it,” you agreed with a smile. “She’s got him wrapped around her tiny little finger.”
Maverick cradled Maisie against his chest, holding her protectively. Bradley walked over to give you a hug as Maverick took in the fact that he was holding Goose and Carole’s first grandchild. Goose was a grandpa. Carole was a grandma. To the most beautiful little girl that Maverick had seen since you were born.
“She’s so beautiful,” Maverick croaked out, sniffling as he tried to not let his tears drop down onto your daughter. Turning to you, he added, “Your parents are so proud of you, sweetheart. And they’re here.”
“I know, Mav,” you returned, trying and failing at not crying at his words. Bradley hugged you tighter as you dried your tears.
Turning to Jake, Maverick offered your daughter. Jake quickly accepted your daughter back into his arms and immediately smiled wider as he held his daughter once again. Jake greeted your daughter softly, as if he had been parted from her for too long. Maverick nodded to himself, very proud and thankful that Jake was ecstatic to be a dad to your daughter.
That little girl was going to be loved, that much was certain.
“Congratulations,” Maverick told Jake, giving his arm a gentle squeeze.
“Thank you,” Jake returned softly.
Maverick walked over to check on you and Jake walked over to where Javy and Nat were standing, waiting patiently for their turn. Javy squeezed Jake’s shoulder supportively, staring down at Maisie with a wide smile.
“She’s beautiful, Jake,” Javy replied, giving his wingman a side hug.
“She gets it from her mom.” Jake shifted his hold on your daughter as he turned back to Javy. “Do you want to hold her?”
“Of course, I want to hold her.”
Jake maneuvered your daughter safely into her Uncle Javy’s arms. Javy had plenty of nieces and nephews, so he wasn’t a stranger to the move. Javy smiled down at Maisie and cooed softly, watching her nose wrinkle as she wiggled in her pink blanket. She stuck her tongue out, causing Javy to laugh.
“Yeah, she’s your daughter alright.”
Phoenix walked over to your hospital bed with a paper take out bag. Holding it out to you, she offered a supportive smile as you shot her a questioning look.
“Your post-baby meal. As promised.”
“You’re amazing,” you breathed out, happily taking the bag from her.
“And whenever you stop breastfeeding, I’ll drop off some wine. You’re going to need it raising Hangman’s kid.”
Everyone stayed for a little bit longer, but no one wanted to intrude on your and Jake’s time with your daughter. You fell asleep not long after Penny and Mav left, leaving Jake and Maisie alone in the hospital room for the first time.
Jake laid down on the couch and rested your daughter against his bare chest again, taking the nurse’s advice on skin-to-skin contact. Maisie’s little head had a surprising amount of hair and Jake slowly ran his finger through it to keep her soothed. Smiling down at his daughter, Jake looked over to see you still peacefully sleeping.
“You scared your mom earlier today, coming early like that. And me too. I thought that I had time to surprise your mom. I was going to get her some nice flowers, set up your nursery, and the rest of the house. But nothing went according to plan with our entire relationship, so I should have expected that you would pull something like this.”
Your daughter wiggled around against Jake’s chest, curling into his body warmth as he continued to brush her hair and back softly.
“And you’re the best welcome home present that I’ve ever received, sweetheart,” Jake added, unable to stop smiling. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head before leaning back again. “I’m always going to be here for you, okay? Don’t you ever forget that. I love you. I love your mom. And I’ll do anything to protect the both of you, alright? From anything.”
Jake laid there with your daughter, content to simply watch her, until she started to get fussy. Wiggling and feeling around, Maisie started to try to feed on him. Jake gently rolled to sit up and held Maisie in his arms. Trying to placate her, Jake hoped that you’d be able to sleep for a little longer.
But then Maisie started to cry even louder, and Jake could hear you shift on your bed.
“Jake,” you called, cracking open your eyes.
“I think she’s hungry,” Jake stated, getting up and walking to you.
Nodding tiredly, you sat up and pulled your hospital gown down. Jake handed over your daughter and you tried to get her settled. After some time, Maisie latched and started to feed, allowing you to lean back and close your eyes, still half-asleep.
Jake kept a supportive arm under yours, knowing that you were exhausted. Staring down at Maisie as she suckled, Jake pressed a kiss to the side of your head. You hummed, but Jake could tell that you were tired. Actually, tired was an understatement.
When Maisie finally had her fill, Jake took her into his arms again. Holding your daughter with one arm, Jake readjusted your hospital gown and pulled the blanket up further.
“Go back to sleep. I’ve got her,” Jake told you softly, gently brushing your hair out of your face. “I love you.”
“Love you too,” you mumbled back tiredly.
~~~~~
Your time in the hospital flew by and before you knew it, you were being released. Jake helped you into the back of your car, where your daughter was already safely strapped in. You were still exhausted, but glad to go home to your own bed. You wanted to finally settle into your home with your husband and your daughter.
Jake gently closed the door to the driver’s seat, not wanting to startle your daughter, and looked back at the two of you over his shoulder. He glanced up at the little mirror attached to the head rest that you had been gifted at your baby shower, which allowed him to look down at your sleeping daughter.
“How’re you doing?” he asked you, causing you to smile softly.
“I’m ready to go home."
“Me too,” Jake agreed, returning your smile.
Starting the car, Jake backed up out of the parking spot and began to drive home. You kept a close eye on your daughter, but Maisie was content and slept through the short ride. Well, it would have been short, but Jake insisted on taking the backroads, driving the speed limit, and yielding to just about everyone or everything. But the three of you eventually made your way home.
“Welcome home, Maisie. Welcome home, Jake,” you stated with a small grin.
Jake got out of the car first and walked around to grab your daughter's car seat. And then the three of you walked into the house together as a family for the first time ever.
Jake quietly noted the boxes that were still piled up around the place but didn't comment about it. Breaking away from Jake’s side, you slowly made your way over to the kitchen and picked up the note that someone left for you.
Your fridge and freezer are full of meals for the two of you. Enjoy this time with your daughter and don’t worry about cooking. Just focus on your family. And you know that you can always call me if you need help. With Love, Sarah.
“I should call her,” you stated, showing Jake the note. He picked it up and noted the writing on the back.
“And don’t worry about calling me, I know you’re thankful,” Jake read aloud, causing you to laugh to yourself.
“I wonder when my mom-senses are actually going to kick in,” you mused, looking down at your daughter.
“They’re already there,” Jake insisted, setting your daughter’s car seat on the ground gently. “Now, what did you want to do while she’s still sleeping?”
“We should probably put her crib together.”
Jake found the box among the stack and pulled it out. You sat on the couch, keeping an eye on your sleeping daughter. Jake opened up the box and handed you the instructions before he started to lay out all of the different pieces.
“Did you want me to read them to you?” you asked, flipping through the instructions.
“I can figure it out,” Jake insisted, causing you to look up and raise an eyebrow at your husband.
“You’re just going to figure it out?” you repeated slowly.
“How hard can a crib be to put together?”
Twenty minutes later, you were sorting through all of the baby clothes that you had been gifted to pull out the size that fit your daughter as Jake quietly muttered to himself. Knowing that he would stubbornly refuse to admit that he was struggling without the directions, you decided to try and shift his focus.
“Now that I think about it, did you want to set up the bassinet first?” you suggested.
“Which box is that?” he agreed, standing up.
“The one sticking out on the right side,” you stated, trying not to laugh at your husband.
Jake, however, could hear the smile in your voice and turned back to you. Walking over to you, he leaned down so that you were eye level.
“I will figure out the crib,” he insisted softly.
“I know you will,” you assured him, running your hand down his cheek. Pressing a soft kiss to his lips, you added, “You’ll look at the directions while I’m asleep, won't you?”
“I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.”
Jake pecked your lips again before straightening up and moving to grab the box with the bassinet in it. You smiled to yourself before looking down at your daughter. You leaned down a little bit, placing your finger in her curled fist.
“Your dad is really stubborn. Please tell me that you didn’t get that trait from him.”
“I can hear you.”
“Shh, this is a private conversation,” you teased, causing Jake to smile and shake his head.
~~~~~
Jake set Maisie down in her crib, which he built while you took a nap. If he used the directions or not, he would never admit it aloud. Not unless you gave him a pout, anyways. You walked into your bedroom, having put away some milk for Jake to grab in the night for Maisie, and smiled tiredly when you saw Jake hovering over your daughter.
“How is she?”
“She’s asleep.” Turning to you, Jake walked over and grabbed your hands. “Now, it’s time to take care of you.”
You and Jake stepped into the adjacent bathroom. After you anxiously rambled to Jake about leaving Maisie alone, he very gently pulled her crib over to be next to the door—but not blocking it to avoid steam and just in case there was an emergency—and placed a baby monitor receiver on the towel rack beside the shower, just in case you couldn’t hear her.
Jake gently undressed you before undressing himself. Testing the temperature of the water, Jake stepped in first before offering you a hand. You couldn’t help the sigh of relief that escaped as the hot water hit your sore body. Leaning against your husband, you curled your head into his chest.
Being very gentle with you, Jake lathered your hair with shampoo before washing it out for you. Rubbing his hands together with body soap, Jake carefully washed your skin, knowing that the residual hospital smell was bothering you.
“I could get used to this,” you murmured, running your hand through his hair.
After applying conditioner to your hair, Jake held you in his arms as you leaned against his chest. He rubbed your back as the water rained down on the two of you. Pressing a kiss to your head, Jake rested his head against your own.
He didn’t want to bring it up with you yet, not until he could assess the situation himself. But he was worried about you.
When he would check in with Coyote and Phoenix while he was deployed, they mentioned that you weren’t like yourself in the last few weeks of your pregnancy. And Penny confirmed that for him, when he had a moment to talk to her privately at the hospital.
And he hoped that it was just part of your pregnancy and was now nothing to worry about, but he wasn’t just going to dismiss it.
You were his wife. You just had your baby girl two days ago after finishing up your third trimester without him. You moved into this house without him. You had your baby shower without him. You did a thousand things without him because you were forced to just deal with what life threw at you.
And he wasn’t going to let anything happen to you or Maisie. The past nine months, you had been doing the heavy lifting. And now it was his turn to do that.
Turning off the water, Jake stepped out to grab a towel. He dried you off and after helping you into some pajamas and pulling on some shorts, Jake led you back to your bed. He helped dry your hair as you applied some moisturizer.
“How do you feel now?” Jake asked, causing you to smile up at him.
“Better, thank you.”
You leaned over and pressed a kiss to his lips that Jake was happy to return. Jake put the TV on and the two of you cuddled in bed as you quickly started to fall asleep. Jake held you into his side, rubbing his thumb on your hip.
“I love you,” he told you softly, causing you to hum.
“I love you too, Jake.”
