Im of the full (possibly delusional) belief that Durge is not the species that they physically appear to be.

You’re telling me this being crafted from nothing but bhaal’s flesh and his blood - this demigod - is actually a dragonborn/tiefling/human/elf/etc.

No. This thing is bhaal’s flesh and it just happens to look like that. They’re an imitation of a species, they’re not truly a (full)mortal being, they have no heritage aside from bhaal.

As a result I’m sure there’s some…oddities.

For example, a demigod child, not fully mortal. I doubt they adhere to the lifespan of whatever species they look like. Looking younger than they should. (less so perhaps with long lived races like elfs and half-elves where that is par for the course).

A dragonborn durge that by all accounts looks like a blue dragonborn but their breathweapon is acid. A tiefling durge that seems to be a Mephistopheles tiefling but they cannot cast mage hand, instead smiting like a zariel bloodline tiefling.

An elf or tiefling durge that doesn’t read as fey or infernal trough identification spells. Because they aren’t either of those things. Perhaps they could read as divine but not quite.

Members of a race that durge is supposed to be looking at them and sometimes when making eye contact they read as wrong. And some kind of uncanny effect triggers in their brain.

Give me more freaky durge who isn’t really what they appear to be at all. Just a little murder demigod crafted from dead god flesh to be the shape of something else.

i think i struggle to picture this because being a college professor & being a high school teacher (like he was in gof) are such different skillsets... i always want to see him as an elementary school teacher.

i truly believe barty would be the wildly unprofessional but deeply beloved 4th grade teacher with a snake in his classroom, or perhaps a ferret, who wears band shirts to school and STRUGGLES not to say "fuck yeah!!!" every twenty minutes

Have I said this already but reading Wolf Hall and watching it, I think making it a miniseries does it a huge disservice. Who decided to squish it all into what, 8 episodes? I don't understand the thought process behind that because there is so much in the first book alone that could have easily spanned to like, two seasons. The show feels so contained and what I hate the most is that these are AMAZING actors, like the fact that a show that was only 8 episodes is still hailed in higher regard over the Tudor's for its actor portrayals and historical accuracy says a lot.

But why just 8 episodes, I feel that is such a fumble that I'm so hurt about.

Ok so. my running theory is that Bhaal only took back his blood. because that is what you see leaving their body. But the Dark Urge is made from Bhaal's flesh too - and that still means that any of your spawn will still be fundamentally bhaalspawn. That means that they are still fundamentally bhaalspawn, just that Bhaal cannot directly control them anymore. Bhaal's flesh freed from his blood with its own soul.

my other running theory - which might be true but I cannot fact check in game documents at the moment - is that the Dark Urge was not supposed to be his 'most perfect spawn' but an avatar. An attempt at resurrection. (either from Bhaal's intent or that of his worshippers).

The web 'game' Blood in Baldur's Gate shows us that Durge was canonically active during 1477 DR. This is 15 years before the events of the game in 1492 DR and 5 years before Bhaal is resurrected.

Bhaal is resurrected in 1482 DR as of the adventure module Murder in Baldur's gate where it claims that the last bhaalspawn die, thus freeing enough of his blood for Bhaal to return. But we know that this isn't every bhaalspawn because Durge, Orin, Saravok are around still.

The point being that Bhaal is very much still dead long before the conception of the Dark Urge. We know that durge was a child and as shown in Blood in Baldur's Gate they are depicted as an adult (and could at the least be a teenager, hard to tell with dragonborn I suppose). So they were made and existed long before Bhaal returned and were likely made around a century post-his death in the second sundering (around 1358 DR).

Which thus leads me to believe the Dark Urge isn't supposed to be daddy's perfect little spawn but Bhaal's new body. A body that became obsolete upon his proper resurrection, so it was given a different purpose.

It does bring into question the creation of Sceleritas Fel - supposedly made by Bhaal to guide them. Hard to do so from death and powerless. Perhaps a subconscious thing by Durge? Knowing they needed help - and as a demi-god the closest thing to Bhaal's will that was left?

I was trying to see if it was ever explicitly stated that Maria was just a caretaker of the patients at the research hall or if she was like. Also participating in the experiments. Perhaps even in charge of the place?

Not that her hands are exactly clean either way - she couldn't stand to use her Rakuyo anymore, but she stuck around to see what came of what they found in the fishing hamlet, didn't she? And either way, the patients were clearly not treated well. In particular there's a lot of guilt among them, fear of abandonment, that they're failures, etc.

Idk just something I'm suddenly curious about.
