  A lot of the time I feel like western philosophy isn’t depressing because the subjects themselves are intrinsically so, but because they insist on looking at them from such a needlessly limited and depressing angle. Seeing clearly is only a curse when you focus on staring at a blank wall. Consider the limitations of language. Yes, language is a clumsy tool for expressing something as abstract as thought, and in a way it will always cage us in - there isn’t always a perfect word for what you mean, and cobbling together a sentence that tries to grasp at what you wanted to say will never perfectly define it.

 But while we are trapped by the languages we speak, isn’t it still wonderful that you have as many tools as you have languages?

 I started thinking about this concerning finnish and english again today - in english, the classifications of animals’ circadian rhythms are adjectives. One animal is nocturnal, another diurnal, and so on. In finnish, they are nouns - a nocturnal animal is yöeläin - literally “night animal”, and diurnal is päiväeläin - “day animal”. I don’t know why I find this so particularly endearing, since in finnish these are just ordinary words of animal behaviour, but I do nonetheless. So much expression and the essence of human soul is lost in translation when two languages’ words for the same thing are not an exact match, but there’s also some completely unintended poetry to be unearthed the same way.

 The finnish word for crepuscular animals is hämäräeläin. The word hämärä simply means a state of faint and dim light, not quite darkness but far from being bright. A crepuscular animal is - directly translated - “an animal of dusk and twilight”. And I think there’s something strangely wonderful about calling them that.

Veetillä on vanhempi veli ja nuorempi sisko.

Veetin veli on täydellinen lapsi ja Veetin pitäisi olla enemmän niinkuin se. Kilpaurheilija ylioppilas. Taino, niin Veetin vanhemmat sen ainakin näkevät. Ei se paikallisen tason yläpuolella ole. Vanhempien yliviedyt kehut on kasvattaneet sen egoa hieman liikaakin.

Veetin sisko on ihana kulta mussukka, äidin ja isän prinsessa. Ikinä se ei mitään väärin tee, jonkun muun syytä se oli. Kaiken se saa eikä mitään anna, onnea ja menestystä kun ensimmäiselle luokalle kohta menee. Vanhimman veljensä seuraaja.

Veeti on se mitätön, kaiken väärin tekevä. Ei malta odottaa, että joku pelastaa tästä helvetin perheestä.

Jonnella on vanhempi sisko.

Jonnen sisko lähti 15 vuotiaana. Jonne oli itse silloin 5. Ainoa hämärä muisto siskosta on, kun se oli lähdössä. Sillä oli niin kauniit mustavalkeat meikit laitettuna. Ikkunasta se taisi lähteä, eikä tullut takaisin, vaikka kuinka pitkään Jonne odotti.

Siitä ei saanut puhua. Ei edes silloin, kun se asui vielä kotona. Jonne ei tiedä siskonsa nimeä tästä syystä. Joskus joku tietämätön siitä puhui, oli nähnyt sen pääkaupunkiseudulla. Toivoa ehkä siis on.

Yks vittumaisimmista asioista rekrytointitapahtumissa (siis niiden olemassaolon ja fekkipositiivisen ilmapiirin lisäksi) on se, että yli puolilla firmoista on hämärä nimi ja sitten niiden ständin ulkoasu ei ees kerro kunnolla mitä ne tekee. Siis joo, nätti väriskaala ja kivoja kestävän kehityksen tavoitteita, mutta mitä vittuu te oikeesti teette?

olavi uusivirta on niin vitun raskas, ku sen joka toinen säe on joku vitun villi intertekstuaalinen viittaus tai muu hämärä heitto, jota et voi ymmärtää, ellet tunne kaikkien suomirokin legendojen diskografiaa viimisen 50 vuoden ajalta, alkon valikoimaa, helsinkiä, kirjallisuuden ja runouden klassikoita, vanhoja autoja, yhdysvaltojen historiallisia maanteitä, raamattua ja edes vähän latinaa.

mut mä siis rakastan olavi uusivirran musiikkia aivan täysillä, vaikka tiedän tekeväni itteni varmaan ihan naurettavaks, ku en tajuu tai edes kunnolla kuule kaikkien biisien sanoja (saisko jostain viralliset lyriikat?) mut silti laulan ja jammailen mukana minkä pystyn.

ymmärtääkö kukaan täysin, mitä kaikkea olavi uusivirta on laittanu lauluihinsa? onko sillä väliä, ettei ymmärrä kaikkia lyriikoita tai saa niistä selvää? tai tajua yhtään mitä pupun viimeisessä säkeistössä tapahtuu?
