wanted to do a physical timeline for my commander and highlight how he’s changed through the years. this is mostly for my own entertainment BUT I do enjoy seeing the same thing from other folks so I’m posting it here in the hopes that other people share my sentiment.
(I was ALSO totally inspired by @/manasurge’s hair timeline. it kicks ass. go look at it.)
elaboration/rambling below the cut!
Personal Story, LW1-2: Popped out of the pod blunt, solicitous, and already maybe a little too paranoid for someone who was born yesterday, but all those traits made him uniquely qualified for a position in military leadership.  Healthy and floral, soft aspen-bark-like skin, delicate petals. black anthers produce pollen. undergoes more fashion changes than physical transformations during this time. gets a little banged up here and there (and maybe has some lasting respiratory effects from the toxic alliance era) but overall feelin a-okay.
Heart of Thorns: it’s all gone to shit. took a spectacular headdive in both a physical and mental sense with breakneck speed. never “officially” answered mordremoth’s call, but anyone who spent time around him would notice a distinct lack of self control and logical thinking. took on a more sickly pallor, stress caused leaves to shrivel, rot, and decay. lost his lil flower top notch and ability to produce pollen. pupils narrowed to take on a more animalistic look, and enamel growth resulted in sharper, larger teeth. fingers also elongated into claws. never fully physically and mentally recovered from the hell jungle.
LW3: chopped off most of his leaves to encourage fresh growth. lots of physical healing during this time, though it takes quite a while for his complexion to fully recover. takes on the role of aurene’s champion with gusto. relatively unaffected by bloodstone, but feels the effects of mordremoth’s loose/uncontrolled magic deeply. continues to hear mordremoth’s “voice” and is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Path of Fire: still healing from HoT. continues to grow out his leaves. glow returns, as well as some of his eye color. likes the crystal desert, but finds the harsh, dry climate to be particularly challenging; he’s definitely more of a ‘temperate’ sylvari. does not handle dying well. death only adds to his paranoia and psychosis. has an increasingly hard time picking apart what is real and what is…. not.
LW4: let’s get ready to kill an undead lich!!!! absorbs even more magic after the death of joko and kralkatorrik, and it starts to show in a there-and-gone shimmery aura that takes on a similar appearance to ley lines. starts to suffer from migraine auras. flower top notch grows back, but stays closed and dormant. picks up a few nifty necromancy tricks from the elonians, and the tips of his fingers start to show signs of necrotic decay; all that death magic can’t be good for the complexion, can it?
Icebrood Saga: having another dragon in his head does not help his mental health in the slightest. braided leaves (courtesy of braham <3) to protect against frostbite. his ley “aura” gets more intense, hard to miss, and is a near constant. flower topnotch remains closed due to the cold weather conditions. after being shot by bangar, his wound is covered/healed by aurene’s brand. migraines increase in frequency, makes it difficult for him to focus. a bone deep exhaustion starts to set in, and more often than not, he catches himself thinking that a nice long nap underneath a blanket of snow doesn’t sound so terrible….
End of Dragons: back in a more agreeable climate, his topnotch finally blooms, but does not grow anthers or produce pollen. easily physically corrupted by void magic, and he feels soo-won’s pain and struggle deeply. the void corruption eventually shows up in the form of darkening leaves, and seeping out of his eyes/tearducts (it’s fine. don’t worry about it.). starts to incorporate chaos magic into his own necromancy practices. has a fucking terrible time in gyala delve. has a fucking terrible time saying goodbye to aurene.
Secrets of the Obscure: nothing feels entirely real to him anymore. still willing to help, to fight, but it’s done on autopilot at this point. this magical, floating palace in the sky looks and feels like a dream, with the kryptis acting as the encroaching, inevitable turn to a real, living nightmare. still uses a bit of leftover void in his magical practices, but most of the corruption has left his system. that respiratory illness he picked up back in kessex hills comes back to bite him in nayos. finally grows back his anthers, but instead of producing pollen, it's an outlet for void/magic energy.

You know... the fact that the commander didn't see their allies and the fact that the demon made them relive their trauma in that instance-
Honestly it would he interesting to see the commander hurting someone they didn't mean to because the demon made them think it was someone else- someone more dangerous.
And imagine how fast the news would spread. The commander hurt one of their friends, maybe an innocent civilian they were supposed to protect.
Maybe its not just one person they hurt.
Maybe people become scared of them. The commander is supposed to be protecting them.
Maybe the commander is the villain for them.

I know they had Finn carry us but I’m possessed by the idea of, even in stages, the trio of Yao, Gorrik and Rama having to carry, or half drag for the larger folk, the Commander to safety. It’s dangerous, maybe Gorrik runs ahead, pistol at the ready - he’s done this before in a cell and he’ll do it a thousand times over, as long as they never have that wobble in their voice again
Rama and Yao shouldering the great hero over their shoulders, trying to ignore the soft mumbles and apologies - the whimpers, actual whimpers, of being unable to stop, unable to save, of all the wrongs they did (it’s all false, they did their best), and trying to tune out the tears falling intermittent as they focus on pulling them out of the Haze
What did we say? What secrets did we reveal? Did we cling to one more than the others? Was it like night terrors - were we seemingly wide awake, eyes open, howling in the camp, crying our heart out while no one could do anything? How long were we out? Did Gorrik huddle next to us again, did Rama chase off guards with a stare honed from years of working in a field where you must chase off the well meaning from the grieving? Did Yao have Finn try to warm us you and pull a blanket round our shoulders? Did they read to us to try and reach through the darkness?

spoilers for what lies beneath
What if the effects of the haze never fully went away for the commander?
What if every time they pass shopkeepers who sell fruit they swear they see Tybalt out of the corner of their eye. What if every time they hear a woman laughing they hear Sieran, or someone touches their shoulder they can hear him talking to them for a moment, or what if every time someone looks at them a bit too long, with a bit too much emotion they can feel Trahearne staring at them, begging them to kill him.
What if every time they pass by a statue for a moment they can hear Eir humming as she chips away.
What if in the dark of the night, when its a bit too peaceful, a bit too quiet, The Commander can still hear Almorra's taunting remarks and snickering laughter?
It never lasts more than a split second, so The Commander never tells anyone, and when their friends ask they if they're okay, they just brush it off as they didn't get enough sleep that day.
But...
What if the demon has its claws deeper in The Commander than anyone knows?

Oh man if we're gonna be exploring and using the commanders trauma can we get like a big emotional breakdown. Cause i dont think this is gonna be fun for them and i imagine they'll just wanna push through no matter what, disregarding their own thoughts and feelings....

SPOILERS FOR WHAT LIES BENEATH (and gw2 in general)
I know it won’t happen but I’m possessed by the thought of a cutscene where we get Yao or someone post battle scoffing and going “yeah, like the Commander would attack us” (because so far we haven't, we’ve attacked other things in the hallucinations, but not them), and then everything to go slow mo and you see Rama or Finn yanking them back as our main weapon slides within inches of them, cutting a lock of hair or there’s a small line of a cut. Like just 100% No noise, not a sound; a blow to remove a threat as quickly as possible.
I imagine we’d of sparred with Dragon’s Watch at times, and with Destiny’s Edge/people from earlier in the story, but they’re not here now. This isn’t playing sparring with Braham were halfway through the holding back punches turn into trying to wrestle and telling the worst jokes. This isn’t Kas throwing a shield at us mid wrestle cuz it got too rough for her liking, just to be safe. This isn’t Rytlock with a shoulder to ours when we’re getting a scolding for using 75% of that strength in a spar, only because he returned it, and he’s charr - that’s how they do, he says, a grin that’s all teeth and understanding.
This is the one who ended the Cycle of Dragons that has been ongoing since before the universe, who slayed a God, a Lich so unkillable the previous attempts resulted in entrapping them. Who died and made Death itself offer a deal out of respect. Who’s the one the world throws at it’s problems for the past decade. The living definition of the someone yelling “again” when you go down.
The unkillable god-slayer, lich-ending, ender of the dragon cycle and parent to an Elder Dragon has decided you are a threat. You are damn near alone with them. And you are a threat. Death makes no sound as it approaches in the eyes of your friend and all you have is someone on a comms unit screaming in reply to whatever it is your friend is saying
