Announcing Guardian Bingo 2023!
Announcing Guardian Bingo 2023!!
Due to popular demand, the fest is continuing into 2023, though with a few minor changes.
Much of the fest will remain the same. Guardian Bingo will continue to be a low-stress fest with an emphasis on fun and enjoyable creation.
Whether you are new or returning from 2022, we would love to have you join us. (Returning participants have the option to keep working on their 2022 card.)
Full info about signups and other things to know are below the cut.
Cards/Signups
Participants from 2022 will have the option to sign up for a new card or choose to continue with the card they are already using. If you like your card and want to keep working toward a blackout on it, then you don’t have to lose the progress you’ve made. If the old card isn’t very inspiring or you want a fresh start, we’ll be happy to provide a new one.
New participants will obviously get a new card.
Badges
Remain the same as in 2022. The majority of participants did not claim all badges during 2022, so we’re keeping them as-is to allow more people can earn them.
Social Media Presence
In 2023, Guardian Bingo will only operate a fest account on Tumblr.
In 2022, the fest had both Tumblr and Twitter accounts, but due to Twitter’s recent chaos and tehfanglyfish’s need to have one less login to keep up with, the fest is going Tumblr-only. That’s where we’ll post announcements, reblog creations, etc.
If you are mostly active on another site, we’ll have submissions open so you can submit links to your creations on our Tumblr account and everyone is welcome to participate regardless of whether or not you’re active on social media.
Tagging
Please use #guardianbingofest as your tag on Tumblr. Or better yet, just @ us at @guardianbingo. Sometimes Tumblr tagging works in search results and sometimes it doesn’t. We don’t want to miss your creations!
Bonus Prompts
Will also continue, although there will not be a new prompt for January. Instead, that month will still serve as a time to submit missed prompts from 2022. Then a new prompt will go out in February.
Creations For Fills
The rules remain unchanged from 2022. While some information is posted below, our About/FAQ and carrd both have full details.

Rec Lists
FanARTifacts (tangible creations)
Podfics (with original author’s permission and a link back)
Translations (with original author’s permission and a link back)
Meta Analysis
If you have another idea, check in with the mods, but it very likely works.
What Are The Length Requirements?
None! This is meant to be fun, not stressful. Want to write a 100k multi-chapter epic? Sounds great! Is this the year you master the drabble? Also wonderful! The point is to make stuff, not worry over min/max requirements.
Is This Fest Novelverse or Drama?
Either or both! It’s totally up to you, though some of the prompts are more closely tied to one or the other. (If you get a card with a drama or novel specific prompt that you are unfamiliar with, let a mod know when you receive the card.)
Crossovers, Derivatives, And RPF?
All three are allowed, but please be aware that some prompts will be Guardian-specific.
What About Ships And Ratings?
All ratings and any ships (or no ships) are allowed, though works should be appropriately tagged.

For Weilan Weeks Week 3's free theme, I decided to go with the Pendant of Pining. Also a fill for the “Lollipops” square on my @guardianbingo card.
“You deserve more than a lollipop. The wrapper of a lollipop.” Zhao Yunlan grimaces. He looks at the pendant Shen Wei gave him that day in Dixing, now fallen open between them and revealing its wrinkled, chocolate-swirl heart.
There is a reason he had put off returning it.
He can’t meet Shen Wei’s eyes. “It’s just trash. You carried it all these years without even knowing what it is.”
Shen Wei reaches out, past the necklace and takes Zhao Yunlan’s hands in his. “I knew enough. I knew it was the sweetest thing I had ever tasted. It still is.”

no sweeter arrangement (Weilan, 4.1k, post-canon fluff with kittens)
Shen Wei approaches him holding a dish towel, making as if to take the menace from him. “Don’t come close,” Zhao Yunlan warns, only half-joking. He’d sworn in his wedding vows to protect him, and that promise covers the gamut of threats from self-martyrdom to tiny kittens who seem to be composed primarily of knives.
Or: Da Qing finds some kittens on a rainy night. Three millennia-old beings fuss over them.

November Bonus Prompt
This month the Guardian Bingo bonus prompt is nano inspired. (Nano as in small, not as in novel writing.) Since many participants may be busy with other fests and challenges the bonus prompt is Short and Sweet.
As with all other prompts, you’re free to interpret it as you wish. That could be a smaller work or a work inspired by something small. Master the drabble, make a quick sketch, create more tiny dragons, or go in a totally different direction. It’s entirely up to you!
You had the month of November to fill this prompt, but all missed bonus prompts can be submitted in January.

What Is A Bonus Prompt?
An extra prompt issued at the beginning of each month, starting in February. You can fill it in addition to the prompts on your card or swap it out with a square that you don’t like or is giving you trouble.
How Much Time Do I Have To Complete The Bonus Prompt?
Through the end of the month in which it’s issued. February’s prompt has to be filled in February, March’s prompt in March, etc.
Additionally, January 2023 is reserved as a month for turning in bonus prompts you weren’t able to complete during the month they were assigned.
What Do I Get For Filling Bonus Prompts?
First and foremost, whatever work the prompt inspires you to create
A way to swap out a square on your card – just be sure to keep a record of the swap
The Merit Brush badge (if you fill 5 bonus prompts)
Do I Have To Complete The Bonus Prompt?
Of course not. They’re 100% optional.
Apart From Having To Complete The Bonus Prompt Within The Month It Was Issued, Are There Any Other Changes To The Rules Regarding Fills?
Nope! Just like with your card, creations of any length and format are allowed provided that they’re not reused or plagiarized. You are also allowed the same freedom and flexibility in interpreting the bonus prompt as the squares on your card.
