Colton is easygoing and laidback, a true California kid, yet is intensely competitive. Participant (rumored to be the mastermind) in several of the infamous Indy 500 bus lot pranks in recent years, he somehow eludes any true blame falling upon him. He’s well-liked within the paddock, most recently sort of adopted by the Bus Bros and nicknamed “Swolton.” He is also close friends with Alex Rossi, often staying with his former teammate when he needs to be in Indy. He doesn’t make a lot of waves off-track, one of the quietest drivers on social media, but makes up for it on-track with fantastic saves and crashes in equal measure. Just 23 years old in 2023 has 7 wins, 11 podiums and 9 poles in his young life.

F1 discussions.

In late summer 2022, it was announced that F1 team AlphaTauri had an interest in Colton for the 2024 F1 season. Colton, already signed to McLaren F1 as a test driver in addition to his Andretti contract in Indycar, was not eligible for a Super License, a requirement to drive in F1, but this could be addressed with an exception by the FIA. At one point it was announced that this was a done deal but it was not and Red Bull (AlphaTauri’s parent team) soon abandoned all efforts to acquire Colton as a driver.

The Super License system is a convoluted thing that I will not explain here other than to say that Indycar is vastly underrated in points assigned and if not for this discrepancy, Colton would have had more than enough points. But as it is, Colton had 32 points out of a needed 40. Other drivers in similar situations have raced in various lower tier FIA sanctioned series to make up the points and Colton was willing to do this over the winter of 2022-23 but this was also not allowed by the FIA.

But seeing Colton in F1 is still a possibility, should he do well enough in Indycar to earn the points needed and should Michael Andretti eventually succeed in buying an existing F1 team or convincing F1 to allow him to enter a new team. After the end of the 2022 Indycar season, Colton signed a multi-year contract extension with Andretti that includes the ability to switch to an Andretti owned F1 team.

Panoz Esperante GTLM GT2

Georgia's finest got to hang with the giants from Italy and Germany in a magical 2006 sportscar season.

Whether it was by sheer pace at the 12 Hours of Sebring or enduring attrition at a tough 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Esperante GTLM was able to shine through as a venerable contestant in the close quarters of the GT2 category.

First tested in 2004, it went to have it's first competitive season in 2005. Poor results would befall the Panoz Racing Team unfortunately, having to spend the winter improving their car.

Multimatic would come back with a vengeance. The #50 team put the car on pole for the half a day endurance, putting on a blinding performance and holding back a determined Flying Lizard 911 and a blazing Risi F430 for the class win after all was said and done.

Team LNT would bring the Panoz crew a victory later in June, overcoming a race filled with attrition for the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans class win.

At it's heart is a Ford-Elan powered naturally aspirated 5 liter V8 engine, paired with a Hewland 6-speed driving the wheels at the rear. Whilst the power was second to none, the handling was rather questionable with Richard Dean and Tommy Milner both sharing their woes with the car at the limit. The aluminum chassis also made it a rather toasty cabin to sit in. Despite all the short comings, the trusty Esperante still managed to look like a dream.

The success wouldn't last for long, as 2007 was a poor year for the aging chassis. The car took home zero wins and was clearly not up to challenge the new 997 and the oncoming of multiple F430 privateer efforts.

Even if it were just for a single year however, Braselton was able to find their own sports car prestige.

Called “The Iceman” for the way he stays calm and collected under almost any circumstances, Scott Dixon is a methodical driver, knowm to be able to extract the most fuel mileage from his car. A Six-time series Champion, he has earned 52 wins, 130 podiums and 32 poles in his long career. One of the older drivers in the field, he shows no signs of slowing down. He is as competitive as ever, an elder statesman bestowing his wisdom on his teammates.

Off track, he is said to be one of the nicest guys around, family focused but still able to find time for fun with his friends. But early in his career he wasn’t quite as straight-laced as he appears now, known for committing pranks and getting into mischief with Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan. Both remain close friends all these years later.

I’ve avoided mentioning wives and girlfriends for the most part in these Lore posts, but one cannot discuss Scott without mentioning his wife, Emma. Outspoken and sometimes brash, Emma has no problem calling out the series and other drivers when she sees what she perceives as an injustice being done to her husband. But she is also very friendly, taking new drivers’ wives and girlfriends under her wing. Her Instagram (especially her comments on other drivers’ posts) can be very entertaining at times.
