Do you think that in the temeraire universe carabineers get associated with lesbians because of the aerial corps? Like the corps isn't a queer safe haven, it's still Napoleonic era British military, but compared to everyone else in the empire they are very liberal where things like sex and gender roles are concerned. Add to that why some women would want to leave the expected path of marry, become a housewife and have children to a career path where they aren't expected to marry and only expected to have at least one kid if they make it to Captain (and even then, it's just until they get the kid not the rest of their life. Not to mention that if temeraire gets his way not having a captain won't be such a big problem anymore)... Well

Reinforcements, HAWK Battery
The union class dropship Wild Hunt touches down in the cleared space around the captured HAWK battery where designated by the SLDF ground forces. Once securely landed, the hatches open with the hiss of decompression.
Before long, as techs and groundcrew begin to swarm about, the mechs begin to disembark. First, two lights, a Jenner IIC and Raptor, then a pair of Mediums, a Mad Cat III and the lethal, menacing shape of a Kontio, the heavies are next, or in this case, Heavy, a single Warhammer trundles down the ramps to stand next to the mediums, The Assaults come next. A Mad Cat II, followed by a Shrike are next, then the...clearly recognizable to any Solaris VII fan Berserker on digitigrade legs with massive claws and a decidedly saurian shaped skull like head. It pauses, looking around, before being waved over by the Warhammer. Following it, come a Nightstar, a King Crab, one of the rare KGC-010's to boot, and the lumbering form of a Stone Rhino. The mechs line up, before the ground...shakes a bit. Then does it again...and again.
The new mech that emerges from the dropship is massive. 200 tons massive. It visually resembles an Orca, but possess more armor, and two fully functional arms, each equipped with a RAC-10, ER Large and Medium Laser, and claw like hands. The gapping maw of an Ultra AC20 peers from the center torso, and painted on the sides of the mech around the massive cannon is the head of an ancient Terran dinosaur, a Tyrannosaurus, and the words "Big Girl Teeth" in jagged letters. The massive mech makes its way down and takes up position at the end of the line of mechs.
The rest of Barghest Company's offensive arm had landed on Helios.

Dutch Hawker Hunter Foundation (DHHF) Terminates Operations
The Dutch Hawker Hunter Foundation (DHHF) has announced with deep regret the termination of its operations, marking the end of an era for aviation enthusiasts and the legacy of the Hawker Hunter in Europe. The foundation will also divest its prized Hawker Hunter Mk68 G-EHLW, which remains grounded at Horizon Aircraft Services Ltd. (HAS) in St Athan, Wales. The DHHF's journey with the Hawker Hunter Mk68, designated N-322/G-EHLW, began with optimism. In July 2022, after extensive maintenance and rigorous inspections in Altenrhein, Switzerland, the aircraft was ferried to St Athan under a UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Permit to Test & Ferry. The foundation anticipated that minor modifications would soon secure a Full Permit to Fly from the CAA, allowing the Hunter to soar over Dutch skies by the end of summer that year. However, the reality diverged drastically from these expectations. The UK CAA's handling of the application process proved to be protracted and unpredictable, lacking a clear timeline or assurance of a positive outcome. Nearly two years after its arrival in the UK, N-322 remains grounded without the crucial Permit to Fly, and the prospects of obtaining one remain uncertain. These delays have not only thwarted the DHHF’s operational plans but also introduced additional regulatory and logistical challenges. The uncertainty has strained the foundation's relationship with HAS, its Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization (CAMO), and disrupted the availability and proficiency of both aircrew and groundcrew essential for the aircraft's operation. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak

Illustrated Epistle Extract: Coal, Cats and Nudie Calendars on the NZ West Coast
Hey, I'm back!
Not that I really went away this summer, keeping it pretty local in Lyttelton, gardening, surfing with my sister (who has moved here to Christchurch, woop, woop!) and hanging out with her and our other sister and family over the Christmas break. Our only real trips this year have been exploring the rugged West Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
The West Coast is famous for the wild coastline of the Tasman Sea, which stretches for 2,500 miles between New Zealand and Australia, with nothing in between. It's also known for its not-so-tropical rainforest, sandflies, and unpredictable weather. What's less advertised, however, is its attachment to the past. Coal mining remains a major industry, and many homes burn the dirty stuff all year round. Despite being surrounded by breathtaking wilderness, people let their cats roam free to prey on native birds. And though we love local pubs that are rough around the edges, it’s confronting to encounter nudie calendars from two years ago proudly displayed behind the bar.
It's like stepping back in time, but not always in a good way.
So the best of the West Coast is the nature and getting into it. We went to a fantastic, dog-friendly (most of the Coast isn't) campground, called Gentle Annie's, for a few days. It's north of Granity (most famous here for the houses which are being lost to the sea) and smack dab on the beach, next to a beautiful river which Molly and I paddled up without being bitten by too many sandflies. Stunning.
Then the boyf was groundcrew as I pedalled the West Coast Wilderness bike trail from Greymouth to Ross, a total of about 150 km (just under 100 miles in old money) and almost all off-road. The second day was mostly uphill, over 50 km and it didn't stop raining, but I loved it.
More about the NZ West Coast Wilderness bike trail in the next post.
This is an extract of  my Illustrated Epistle, which goes out once a month-ish. It is a behind-the-scenes look at my cartooning life. I'd love it if you signed up at the bottom of this page, or here:

When the autopilot is on, the Flight Director is what controls where your plane goes. Write down or remember your V2 speed as we will need this number in a moment These are speeds used to determine if and when you takeoff from the runway. You can also use flaps 10, but it will take longer for you to get airborne. Flaps 20 is the standard flaps setting for takeoffs in the 747. Click the RTE button to move to the ROUTE page.Įnter 20 into the scratchpad and then click LSK 1L to set the Takeoff Flap setting. The POS INIT page should still be displayed. Let's now continue to program the rest of our flight information into the FMC. The APU has now taken over the job of power source from the battery, which we must leave switched on! As soon as AVAIL is displayed on the APU GEN witches, set them to ON (once again this will take a while). The switch will rotate back to ON and the APU will be started (this will take several seconds). Rotate the APU switch to START (click twice). Wing anti-ice should only be enabled after takeoff. Nacelle anti-ice should only be enabled after the engines are started. This will distribute fuel between the main fuel tanks (there are four of them on a 747).ĭisable NACELLE and WING ANTI-ICE.
Tumblr media
Set all fuel XFEED (crossfeed) switches to ON. Press the CLR button in the lower right of the FMC to clear any messages that may be currently displayed. The POS INIT page of the FMC allows you to determine and input your aircraft's current position. Ensure that the FMC is reporting accurate information about your current aircraft. Click the FMC button located at LSK (Line Select Key) 1L (this means the first button down on the left). We now move over to the FMC/ CDU (you will find three of those at the pedestal, pick the one that is the easiest to control from your position). Meaning flaps are UP, gear handle in DOWN position. Logo and wing lights are optional, but prefered at night.Įnsure that all flight controls are centered and/or in their idle positions. So turn ON the NAV LIGHTS, which can be found in the lower right part of the overhead panel. It can take a couple of seconds till the EXT PWR switches to ON.Īny time the aircraft is powered, nav lights should be enabled, to alert the groundcrew that the aircraft is powered and under control. External power is only available when you are on the ground and the parking brake is set. You will find the switches on the electrical panel on the overhead. Turn ON EXT PWR 1 and, if available, EXT PWR 2. Using external power is "cheap", as it does not require the aircraft to burn any fuel. Without any engine or APU running, the best way of obtaining longterm power is through external power sources, usually provided by the groundstaff at the airport. It is perfectly normal for the OFF lights to be lit at thi time, it just indicates that the generators are not being used at the moment (engines are off), but that they will be used once the engines are started. Set the GEN CONT switches to ON, to allow our engines' generators to provide power to the systems. This will allow power to flow propertly through all electrical systems. The battery should remain on at all time, as it acts as a backup for some vital avionics, so let us close it after setting it to ON. You will notice that it has a protective cover, click it to open/close it.
Tumblr media
With the battery alone, we will be provided with basic power for about 30 minutes, which should be enough for us to set up a better power source. As we will need some extra time to get confident with the flightdeck, we will use the battery. In order to start our preflight checks, we need some power.

Singapore and Malaysia Air Forces Conclude Bilateral Search and Rescue Exercise 2023
The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) successfully conducted the fifth edition of the bilateral Search-And-Rescue Exercise (SAREX) MALSING from 6 to 10 November 2023 at Sembawang Air Base, Singapore. This year's edition saw the participation of both the RSAF's H225M and RMAF's EC725 helicopters, together with their Search-And-Rescue (SAR) aircrew and groundcrew. During the five-day exercise, exercise participants planned and executed a joint aerial SAR operation in response to a simulated aerial mishap off the southern coast of Singapore. During the exercise, the SAR teams conducted aerial searches for survivors, and expeditiously evacuated simulated casualties for immediate medical attention.
