Been giggling at the donkey ears comment for a good while now, that's a first (I love it) They're actually just more long elf ears, it's just one of the lil features grim reapers have that separates them from humans. Since personally I think the only thing that canonically separates them from humans are their green eyes + poor eye sight is boring to me

So I added my own lil twists to make things more fun, not only do they have long pointy ears, but their internal organs, mouths, tongues and blood are purple as well (though, their blood turns green as their eyes when exposed to oxygen). It's just lil things that I think makes them more unnatural y'know, more, alienated. And yeah, ofc they can alter their appearances to make themselves more human and fit in to the crowd easily when on the job (though, they cannot change their blood color, it's the one thing they can't control when it comes to disguises). Unless you're like Undertaker and just alter yourself to look LESS human and more monstrous. RAAHH SORRY FOR THE RAMBLE, it's fun talking about how I view these silly freaks and why I add what I add to them, as a bonus heres a doodle I did because the "donkey ears" comment is so funny to me

Togata is literally the best written trans character I've seen in... Like. Ever?

Which is ESPECIALLY remarkable cause he wasn't written by a trans person. It's literally insane how well written Togata is.

Because they establish him as a character first and he's actually immensely appealing - among the other fucking weirdos that inhabit the world of Fire Punch, Togata is definitely also messed up but he's a lot more sympathetic and likeable.

And then the way his gender is revealed isn't some big joke or a gatcha or a "It's a woman that wants to be a man!!!" type bullshit. It's literally "He's lying to you, he's a man pretending to be a woman!"

Which like. Yeah. As a closeted Trans Guy that's literally what I see myself as. The fact that a literal mind reader looked at Togata and went "Yup that's a man, he's just masking as a woman" is SO fucking big brained even if that was ultimately meant to be an accusation.

And Togata himself is so scared and confused and unwilling to accept it, but he clearly understands he's a man, he clearly knows he wants to transition - he's just lost because he physically can't, and he has no idea what to do with himself.

And the scene where he tries to describe it to Agni, the anguish on his face, the constant reiteration of how painful and confusing and awful it is to be stuck in a body that doesn't fit you - that shit hit me like a ton of BRICKS. It's such a nuanced and detailed look at the trans experience and I have no idea where Fujimoto even fucking got that.

And like. I've seen a fair share of trans characters. And even when I really like them there's usually an aspect that just sticks out like a sore fucking thumb and kinda mucks the whole thing.

Like. Nate from Tiger and Bunny? Started off as a gay stereotype and only improved when the writers realized they were fucking up. Grell? An actual gay stereotype that pretty much became trans by accident. Ayukawa from Blue Period? A lot of muddy waters which isn't a bad thing but it also means it's not actually explicit. Crona? Not explicit. Saiki? Debatable and not focused on. Don't even fucking get me sTARTED on the borderline gross shit BNHA pulls, eugh.

The only other 100% good trans characters I can think of are like, Yuu (and Shou) from Stars Align and Alluka from Hunter X Hunter.

But Togata kinda takes the cake since he's a lot more integral and his struggle is more deeply explored.

Anyway Fujimoto did an incredible fucking job, is my point.

hii! honeslty just curious, I read/watched kuroshitsuji AGES ago and I don't think I've finished the manga anyway, does grell go by she/her?? I vageuly remember ppl headcanonning them as enby though iirc in canon he's a guy?

Your tags peaked my curiosity, I haven't seen any Kuro content in a hot minute, but I remember it being the absolute must watch in my peak anime watching years lol And I absolutely loved the manga's artstyle

in canon grell is a trans woman, yana toboso has said something like "grell is a man with a woman's heart" ages ago and sometimes around 2014/16 had tweeted something about wanting to be more careful with her representation of people like grell in the future, don't quote me on that thought because i only read that tweet once and only remember reading a shitty screenshot of a translation of that interview where she allegedly said that.

i can however show you this:

it's from a bonus chapter (after chapter 108) about the popularity polls (it's a very convoluted non canon chapter) but it's one of the most blatant example of her being trans.

there's also the way she constantly refers to herself as a "young maiden" ect. idk how it goes exactly in the og but in french they translated it so grell always refers to herself with feminine terms while everyone else misgender her including the narrator. she very consistently reaffirm herself as a woman through every single ones of her appearances, like it's a thing she very much does, every single time she's on screen.

i haven't watched the anime in forever (cause it's kind of a disgrace and insult to the manga lol) but if i remember properly (which i mostly likely don't) they did omit/lowkey censor some of grell explicitly going "i wish i had been born a woman/could have been able to carry children" when she first properly introduce herself as a shinigami & the other half of jack the killer. (the anime also really did lean a lot more into the pervert queer caricature whereas in the manga she's given a bit more dignity, especially the further the story goes. though that might be my own impression and maybe it didn't change that much i just love her a whole lot).

also because i have to, please forget the anime (the first two seasons that is) and read the manga first and foremost because oh boy, what a disaster the anime is (nostlagia and atmosphere wise it's entertaining, i really love the op & ed, but it just, i just cant man it doesn't even compare to the manga at all). only watch book of circus -> book of murder -> campania movie -> the new private school arc that's coming soon (idk what they called it) after reading the manga.
