hyDrone is a Greek electronic music project  (Experimental, Ambient, Industrial) by Panos Kouretas from Athens. The project was founded in 2008. In 2010 hyDrone released the debut album "Material" through Fich-Art. It features a remix of Imminent (Olivier Moreau),  Last Days Of S.E.X.and Xsoz included. On April 1st, 2011 the second album "Confusion" followed via Le Petit Machiniste. It contains a remix by Asche (Andreas Schramm), 100blumen (Marcel Nickels) and Ahnst Anders. In 2012 he released the 7" "Regeneration" via the Russian label SEALT. In October 2012 hyDrone performed at the Maschinenfest in Oberhausen. In April 2014 hyDrone played at the FORMS OF HANDS festival  and released his debut "Chronos" on the Dortmund label Hands Productions. On April 28, 2017, Greek post-industrial music project Last Days Of S.E.X. released the album "Sabotage Normality" through Hands Productions. It also features a remix by hyDrone. Lethe, or oblivion, often viewed as an equivalent to death itself, brings relief from the burden of memory - however, one does not have to die in order to forget; and voluntarily choosing oblivion over the pain of memories could be a way to cope with grief, or even with the less weighty troubles of everyday. This is not necessarily a foolproof solution, though... Demo Fusion & EBM's Lethe's Betrayal & Lethe's Betrayal Nocturnes Tarot decks (January-May 2017) attempt to explore how the human mind plays games of its own through direct or indirect triggers and associations, so that memories may always resurface - find a crack in the most meticulously built facade and bring themselves back to life. This may be the most niche review I’ve done so far. “But why,” I hear you ask, “ do you talk about this, when Maroon 5 are number 1 on Billboard?” And so I say: “Because from time to time, I like to listen to some decent pop music!” (This has been your regularly scheduled reminder that Maroon 5 blows.)

Anyway, back to Ashbury Heights. This Swedish goth-pop duo has been around for about ten years, and consists of vocalist/programmer Anders Hagström (which is the most Swedish name I’ve ever heard) and a rotating cast of singers. He’s on his third now, and she actually decided to stick around for a new album, the fourth in total, which is a welcome change. 

The album kicks of with the song Headlights, a powerful cut, incorporating elements of EBM and dubstep. Follow-up Firebird (because the phoenix wasn’t enough of a lyrical cliché already) is surprisingly hopeful for a band that once unironically produced a song called Suicide Anthem (I do not that one recommend: it’s not that good). These two songs also showcase a new dynamic in Ashbury’s sound, namely the increased role of singer Tea Thimé in the band. This may be for the better, as Hagström‘s incredible Swedishness includes a thick accent. On If You’re Shooting with the Left..., things get a little political, but disappointingly vague. The song Tomorrow Is Dead to Me might be the only song on this record I truly dislike, with its EDM-incluenced non-chorus, Hagström’s strange yelping vocals and house-tinged breakdown which sounds like it was lifted straight from We No Speak Americano, while other songs like Long Lost Dead and Gone or Domino are way better. Things go back to being a little dubsteppy on the haunting Corridor, before ending only bright Journey.

The lyrics are appropriately Scandinavian, in that they’re very literary, despite or perhaps because of some head-scratchers and grammatical quirks. Just listen to Firebird. First of all: why not call it Phoenix? “Firebird” sounds stupid. And secondly, not even a Greek would pronounce Icarus with an emphasis on the A.

To get further into my criticisms, the album is too long, with just thirteen songs taking an hour. Some of these songs could have easily been cut-down, since some of them tend to drag on. You might recall the Horrors’ last album V as being one of my favourite of last year, and it was also comparatively long, but that album experimented with texture and had really intricate instrumentation. Here, however, it’s just a way too long intro and repeating the chorus to the point of tedium. The more EDM-tinged songs are predictably weak, while some of the dubstep influenced were dated when this album was written and recorded, unless it had been shelved since 2014.

But on the whole, The Victorian Wallflowers is a batch of solidly-produced pop songs with some good lyrics, but marred by its crushing length and some dodgy musical decisions.
