Grass Valley iconic Art Deco Del Oro Theater is on the selling block the owners of Grass Valley’s Sierra Theaters publicly announced. Grass Valley Sierra Theaters owns both Del Oro Theater and Sutton Cinemas but have provided assurances to the public that both are not closing and will continue to screen films until a buyer is found that continue to bring the movie-going experience to Nevada County at the Del Oro Theater. The Del Oro Theater opened by United Artist in 1942, was renovated in the 1970’s into a triplex expanding to a total of 845 seats, but in the process substantial Art Deco designs and artwork mural were either covered or removed. Still the beautiful old movie house has it’s nostalgia of an era gone by, but like so many businesses, the post pandemic world has proven to be difficult to the families that run the Sierra Theaters group. On foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range, while there is fall color, let’s face it is not as easy to spot or photograph as in the Northeast where I lived most of my life, but fall foliage can be found amongst the 100 foot tall pines if one takes the time to find it. Always been fascinated by aging signage as it points to vestiges of the past. This sign which at one point was a Packard Automobile Dealership sign in downtown Grass Valley and today has been repurposed as the placard for a flooring retailer. At blue hour the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building on Auburn Street that was built in 1931 before President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Work Projects Administration program began at the behest of the Hague-Thomas-Hegarty Post 130 of the American Legion who proctored the constructing of the a veteran’s building in Grass Valley. Beautiful Art Deco exterior of the building seen in this image is beautifully lit. The Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building was dedicated in April of 1932.
