3 OCTOBER 2023 || CARDIFF VISIT - GRANGE PAVILION

The Prince and Princess of Wales visted Cardiff where they met members of the Windrush Generation to celebrate the start of Black History Month.

Their first stop of the day was the Grange Pavilion where they spent time with members of of Windrush Cymru Elders, Black History Cymru 365 and the Ethnic Minority Youth Forum.

As they arrived, William and Catherine were greeted with a huge crowd of schoolchildren from schools which have included Windrush lessons in the curriculum to teach pupils about how the Windrush generation shaped society in the UK.

The Windrush Cymru Elders group was established in 2017 as part of Race Council Cymru and aims to promote the understanding of ethnic minority elders' concerns and needs whilst also celebrating the contributions of the Windrush Generation and people of African descent in Wales. During the visit, they heard about the lived experiences of the elders and the impact the generation has had in Wales since their arrival 75 years ago.

They also spent time with members of the Ethnic Minority Youth Forum which is a youth advisory panel for Race Council Cymru and consists of young people aged 11-25 who seek to be a voice of change for young people from minority ethnic groups in Wales. Finally, they met and spoke with local young people from the Somali community which forms a large portion of Grangetown. They met members of Wales Somaliland Youth Links and Cardiff Bay Warriors FC and heard about the community projects they have been involved in – from football to youth unemployment and building friendships between the young people in Cardiff and Somaliland.

On 2 January 1941 – World War II: The Cardiff Blitz.

Over 100 bombers attacked the city over a 10-hour period beginning at 6.37 pm on the night of 2 January 1941. Dropping high explosive bombs, incendiary bombs & parachute mines, the Riverside area was the first to be bombed. In Grangetown, the Hollyman Brothers bakery was hit by a parachute mine & 32 people who were using the basement as a shelter were killed.

When the raid was over 165 people had been killed & 427 more injured, while nearly 350 homes were destroyed or had to be demolished.

Chapels & the nave of Llandaff Cathedral were also damaged. Western Cardiff was the worst hit area, particularly Canton & Riverside, where 116 people were killed, an estimated 50 of which were killed in one street in Riverside, De Burgh Street.

The Cardiff Blitz (Welsh: Blitz Caerdydd); refers to the bombing of Cardiff, Wales during World War II. Between 1940 & the final raid on the city in March 1944 approximately 2,100 bombs fell, killing 355 people.

Cardiff Docks became a strategic bombing target for German Luftwaffe (the Nazi German air force) as it was one of the biggest coal ports in the world. Consequently, it & the surrounding area were heavily bombed. Llandaff Cathedral, amongst many other civilian buildings caught in the raids, was damaged by the bombing in 1941.
