HAMARI PAHCHAN: A Real-Life Fight For Food

Introduction 

“The war against hunger is truly mankind's war of liberation.” – John F. Kennedy. Poverty and hunger are some of the deep-rooted issues that our society has been dealing with for quite some time now. Approximately 190 million Indians go to bed hungry every day! In last year’s global hunger index, India ranked 101st out of 116 countries, lower than before. The current scenario gives us little hope of improvement, in fact as per the studies we might as well slip amongst the worst performers concerning food security. Hamari Pahchan is a Delhi-based NGO that works towards providing a platform to underprivileged children, women, and men using which they can unleash their inner potential. One of the causes for which the NGO has been working diligently is the eradication of malnutrition. ‘ Two meals in a Day ’ is an essential element of human life but still, some are unable to have it.  Hamari Pahchan works towards providing these essential elements, especially to the children because it is widespread amongst them.

Understanding of Malnutrition term

Malnutrition/Micronutrient deficiencies are a lack of vitamins and minerals that are essential for body functions such as producing enzymes, hormones, and other substances needed for growth and development.

Malnutrition encompasses both undernutrition and overnutrition. While undernutrition affects those lacking adequate food and essential nutrients, overnutrition occurs when people consume excessive unhealthy food leading to obesity and related health issues. Both ends of this spectrum carry severe consequences.

Stunting and Impaired Growth: Undernutrition, particularly in the early years of life, stunts growth and impairs physical and cognitive development. Children who experience chronic malnutrition are more likely to suffer from physical and mental health issues, leading to a perpetuation of poverty and reduced opportunities in adulthood. 

Impacts of Malnutrition

Health Complications: Malnutrition weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to diseases and infections. Pregnant women suffering from malnutrition are at a higher risk of complications, affecting both their health and the health of their unborn children. The cycle of Poverty: Malnutrition traps individuals and communities in a vicious cycle of poverty. Impaired physical and cognitive development reduces the potential to escape poverty, leading to diminished economic productivity and perpetuating the problem across generations.  Some of the key factors contributing to this global issue include;

 Food Insecurity: A lack of access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food is a primary cause of undernutrition. Poverty, conflict, climate change, and social inequalities exacerbate the problem.

Lack of Awareness and Education: Many people, especially in marginalized communities, lack awareness about proper nutrition and the importance of a balanced diet. Education plays a pivotal role in empowering individuals to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. 

Unhealthy Food Environment: The prevalence of unhealthy, processed, and cheap food makes it challenging for individuals to adopt a balanced diet. Marketing junk food, especially to children, further compounds the issue. Inadequate Health Infrastructure: Limited access to healthcare services, especially in rural areas, hinders early detection and treatment of malnutrition. 

Hamari Pahchan Initiatives towards Malnutrition

The Hamari pahchanNGO is trying a multi-faceted approach that addresses its root causes. Here are some key steps that Hamari Pahchan NGO is taking that are leading us to our goal:

 Implementing nutrition education programs in slums can raise awareness about the importance of a balanced diet. Empowering women with knowledge of proper nutrition during pregnancy and breastfeeding is crucial for the health of future generations. Investing in food security initiatives that can ensure a stable supply of nutritious food. Hamari Pahchan NGO establishes social safety nets to support vulnerable populations during times of crisis, ensuring they have access to adequate food and nutrition. We are improving access to healthcare facilities, especially in rural and underserved areas, which is enabling early detection and treatment of malnutrition-related health issues. 

Conclusion

According to a report by the International Food Policy Research Institute, it has been predicted that the Food Production of India could drop by 16% as a consequence of which hunger may increase by 23% by the year 2023. Hence, we must do something right away! We at Hamari Pahchan have been working for this cause relentlessly. We aspire to reach our goal of ‘complete eradication of hunger’ with your humble support. We have a few main projects like Project Drishti, Project Sukhad wherein women are educated about menstrual hygiene, and Skill Development Project where the underprivileged are provided with the opportunity to earn skills which will get them to earn a decent livelihood including some other projects.
