"Doing good again, Angel?"

Aziraphale turned to Crowley, who had just appeared beside him.

His eyes fell on the small goat the demon carried in his arms, then on the long red hair barely concealed by his shepherd's veil.

The demon nudged him on the shoulder and continued, "I bet you're responsible for the roof over their heads and keeping the straw warm." 

Aziraphale whispered back, "The poor souls, no one could house them, and she was about to give birth, I couldn't let them..."

Crowley leaned over and interrupted, whispering in his ear, "Easy, Angel, I wasn't blaming you."

Suddenly, their attention was drawn to a movement in the crowd of shepherds, and following their gaze, they saw three men arrive who were clearly not locals. Their arms laden with gifts, they came to kneel before the woman holding the baby, and the eldest said in an emotional voice, "We have followed the star to find and pay homage to the newborn, the King of the Jews."

Aziraphale whispered to Crowley, a half smile on his lips, "The star, huh? What a coincidence."

Crowley shrugged and replied, "As much of a demon as I am, I can appreciate the effort of three magi coming from so far away to pay homage to a baby."

This time it was Aziraphale who nudged him on the shoulder and said, "You're such a nice dem--"

"Shut up!"

"Shh!"

A shepherd had just turned to them and looked at them with an annoyed expression as he continued, "The little one has finally stopped crying, your bickering will wake him up."

The angel and the demon looked at each other in silence before stifling a giggle.

Aziraphale chuckled slightly at the memory as he finished placing the last of the figures in the nativity scene under the decorated and lit tree that stood in the center of the bookstore.

He stepped back and let his eyes wander over the garlands and other decorations that festively lit up the bookshop. He knew he was going a bit overboard with the Christmas ornaments, but he loved this time of year, so why deprive himself.

He turned to grab the box of outdoor lights and headed for the door.

"Mr. Fell, I hope those aren't Christmas lights you have in that box?"

Aziraphale turned sharply to Mr. Brown, who had just walked up behind him, and asked, "Why? Would that be a problem?"

Mr. Brown replied, "Didn't you read the memo?"

Aziraphale tried to remember what he was talking about, but the other man didn't wait for him to answer and continued, "The use of electric garlands is restricted for environmental and aesthetic reasons.

"But..." Aziraphale tried to protest, but was cut off by Mr. Brown, who added, "No exceptions. Have a nice day."

The annoying redhead walked away without a backward glance, and Aziraphale stood speechless outside the store door for a few moments before returning inside, his cardboard box still in his arms, but looking utterly disappointed.

Little did he know that someone else had witnessed the entire scene.

Taking one last look at the angel's silhouette, whose dejection was visible even from outside the shop, Crowley strode toward the record store. A few seconds later, he emerged with Maggie and Muriel, and the three of them headed for the coffee shop.

"Angel... wake up."

A hand gently shook his shoulder and Aziraphale opened his eyes to see that it was still dark. 

He looked at his old alarm clock on the bedside table and, seeing the time, protested, "Crowley, it's the middle of the night, why are you waking me?"

He felt the demon move next to him and his voice whispered in his ear, "Because I have a surprise for you."

The word surprise was all the angel needed to be convinced, and he immediately sat up in bed, making the demon chuckle.

Crowley planted a kiss on his cheek and said softly, "Get dressed."

"Why?"

The demon simply replied, "Wait and see."

Aziraphale turned sharply toward him and Crowley continued, "Irritating, isn't it?"

The angel replied, "Idiot."

Crowley, a satisfied smile on his lips, watched with amusement as the angel dressed, then he walked around the bed, approached him and, grabbing his hand, dragged him down the stairs. Arriving at the bottom, he paused and, turning to Aziraphale, conjured a blindfold before gently asking, "May I?"

Aziraphale nodded and turned to allow the demon to blindfold him.

Crowley placed his hands on the angel's shoulders and asked gently, "Do you trust me to lead you?"

Aziraphale leaned his head back against the demon and replied softly, "That goes without saying, my dear."

Crowley kissed the angel's hair, nudged him gently before turning him around and walking him to the door of the bookshop. Then he stopped, made Aziraphale put on his coat, and tied a scarf around his neck.

"Oh, we're going out."

"Absolutely, Angel, you really are an excellent detective."

Aziraphale shook his head with a smile, and Crowley, who had slipped on a warm jacket himself, put his hands on the Angel's shoulders again and led him out of the bookshop, walking a few yards until they were in the middle of the street, deserted at this time of night.

Then he said quietly, "Ready, Angel?"

Aziraphale nodded and Crowley continued, "1... 2... 3... Let there be light!"

He untied the blindfold and Aziraphale opened his eyes to an overwhelming display of light.

Lights everywhere, garlands adorning every shop on the street, a festival of warm, colorful lights. He turned around with a look of amazement on his face, unable to say a word because he was so stunned.

After a few moments, he turned to the demon and said, eyes shining, "Crowley... it's... it's wonderful. But how and why and Mr. Brown and..."

Crowley chuckled softly, then took the Angel's hands in his and said softly, "Easy, Angel, one question at a time. First, the why. I witnessed your conversation with Mr. Brown, and I know this time of year is important to you, so I figured there had to be something we could do, so we'll get to the how. Well, with the help of some friends..." he pointed out the coffee-shop window to Aziraphale, who could see Maggie, Nina and Muriel inside waving their hands at him, and Crowley continued, "we put our heads together, and while everyone was asleep, I miracled all those tinsel, ornaments and Christmas lights."

"But..."

Crowley kissed the tip of Aziraphale's cold reddened nose and interrupted, "My impatient angel, let me finish, will you? Maggie and Nina are the only people here who know about us and our... powers, so they helped me concoct this little lie for Mr. Brown. All these lights are powered by a revolutionary, ultra-ecological component. And with the help of some of our other friends, he won't have to say a word. Because we're going to make Wickber Street the place to be for Christmas."

The demon snapped his fingers and an illuminated Santa Claus flashed across the sky. He snapped his fingers again and a Christmas story was projected onto the front of the music store.

Crowley continued, "Justine will be offering mulled wine to all visitors, Mr. Arnold will be playing Christmas music over the loudspeakers all along the street, and of course, everyone will come to see the gorgeous Nativity scene in front of the bookstore.

He snapped his fingers again, and the bookstore window lit up to reveal an enchanting Nativity scene, similar in every way to Aziraphale's memory.

"So you see, Angel, dear Mr. Brown won't be able to say anything, anything at all, because mmfff..."

Crowley was unable to continue because Aziraphale had thrown himself into his arms and pressed his lips to his in a rather passionate kiss.

When they parted to catch their breath, Aziraphale wrapped his arms around the demon's waist and pressed himself against his chest.

As Crowley closed his arms around him, the angel murmured in an obviously emotional voice, "Thank you, my love. You have no idea how happy this makes me."

Crowley whispered into the angel's hair, "You should know by now, Angel, that all I want is to make you happy."

Aziraphale replied against his chest, "You know I am happy without all that. This year, the most beautiful of my Christmas lights is you, my love."

Crowley chuckled softly and replied, "Oh, no, the Christmas spirit makes you even sappier."

"Don't pretend you don't like it," the angel replied.

The demon merely hummed in response, and as Aziraphale snuggled closer to him, Crowley's eyes were drawn to some movement behind the coffee shop window. 

Amused, he saw their friends smiling broadly and giving him the thumbs up. 

His angel was right, with or without Christmas lights, with their life here and their friends, they were both happy here.

Lesson Half Term

For this lesson, I spent a day visiting a series of establishments to gain more experience in how to assess the physical printed image.

The first stop was to the PhotoBookCafé (pictured, above) in North London’s Shoreditch district. Its free library of photobooks and photozines offered a massive opportunity to browse through a wide range of eclectic works.

These included Lu Yang’s semi-erotica, video-game inspired self-portraits in the A4-sized King Kong zine; and the quirky realism in the 5A format zines published by Bump Books.

The informality of the photocopy-like paper used for the zines contrasted with the hard cover and thick matte paper used for images in Americans Parade by George Georgiou. His depiction of the peculiarities in ordinary Americans’ daily lives is comparable to the portrayal of the British by photographer Martin Parr.

Also fascinating was the variety of book formats used by publishers, such as the family album look for the compilation of different photographers’ work in Momentos, published by Monaris; the sophisticated hardback inside a slipcase for People of the Mud, by Berlin-based Luis Alberto Rodriguez, who homes in on the far-from sophisticated hard grind of the lives of a working class community in Ireland.

Equally intriguing was the almost large A3 size and newspaper-supplement style of 12-8 2017, William Mebane’s photographic coverage of the controversial rallies held by US President Donald Trump in Florida.

The PhotoBookCafé visit was followed by one to London’s Photographers’ Gallery and the exhibition called For the Record: Photography & the Art of the Album Cover. This was a visual feast for music fans. It focused on the symbiotic relationship between recorded music and photographic art.

The repertoire included iconic vinyl album covers influenced by or taken by famous artists (Andy Warhol), by famous photograph artists (Lee Friedlander), and covers imitating other album covers (the Clash’s London Calling encapsulating the rebelliousness of punk by imitating the cover of Elvis Presley’s debut album displaying the raucousness of 1950s rock ‘n roll.) (pictured, above).

My next stop was to Maison Assouline, the boutique luxury bookshop in London’s Piccadilly area. The photography books and art books cost between £75 and £20,000 each (pictured, above).

The management explained that the covers of the large limited-edition A3 size coffee-table books costing about £1,000 were specifically made from silk, hand-sewn and hand-bound in Italy before being exported to the UK in customised clamshell cases.

Each book’s cover is embossed in gold, silver and other highly specialised paint. Another Assouline book on Formula One motor-racing had its cover made from recycled F1 tyres (pictured, above).

It was hard to know whether the prices indicate excess just for the sake of it, whether the luxurious covers and paper used to display the photos enhanced the photos’ storytelling; or whether the high costs amounted to good photography’s deserved financial merit and value.

But the whole day’s experience illustrated the extraordinary wide range of print-publishing formats for photography.

"Ya know, it's not every day that I see you with your hair styled," America comments.

"And what about it?" Russia questions, nervous.

"I don't know. I think I like it," America replies with a grin. Russia smiles proudly, and his cheeks turn light pink.

America's smile falls briefly, but it returns before Russia can question its absence, and their flirting continues until it's interrupted by the shrill noise of America's phone.

"I'm sorry, Russ, I gotta take this," America apologizes before answering the phone with a quick, "Hey, what's up?"

Russia listens to America curiously, trying to discern what the phone call was about. America had no problem ignoring France's phone calls earlier that evening, so Russia wonders why this was more important.

"What's going on?... Slow down. I can't understand what you're- ... okay..."

Russia sees America's face fall, and his eyebrows furrow. He can't make out what's being said on the phone, but it worries America. America stands up

"That's a lot worse than I thought it was... yeah, I'm okay... no... yeah, I'll leave now. I'll be there in a few hours. Can you wait that long?... Okay, I'll see you then. Bye," America says, hanging up the phone, and he moves to grab his jacket, and Russia spots something on the dress shirt he's wearing.

"Wait," Russia calls, and America pauses, "are you okay?"

"What are you talking about?" America asks, perplexed.

"You're bleeding," Russia remarks, standing up.

"Oh... listen, I'm fine," America says, trying to wave off Russia's concern and cover the dark red stain on his side.

"Let me at least check first," Russia insists.

"Fine, but be fast," America relents.

They walk back to the bathroom and, thankfully, found it to be empty. America pulls up his shirt to expose the wound. Russia looks at it carefully. It doesn't look like a scratch or puncture wound. It looks like a fresh gash that, had it happened normally, it would've damaged the cloth covering it.

"What happened?" he asks.

"Domestic problems. Can we hurry this up? Please?" America replies impatiently.

"Let me wrap it up, and then you can go," Russia insists.

America sighs but doesn't fight against it. Russia retrieves a roll of gauze and bandages normally saved to cover his arms, and he begins expertly wrapping America's injury. Russia forces himself to focus on dressing the wound and tries not to look elsewhere, despite the urge to explore. Being this close to America is distracting in and of itself, but he knew that he had to finish.

As soon as he backs up, America drops his shirt and throws on his jacket to cover the bloodstain.

"Thank you. Listen, I'm sorry, but I have to go," America says, exiting the bathroom with Russia on his heels.

"Okay. Go, it seems important. Will you be back for tomorrow's meeting?" Russia replies.

"Yes, but I might be late," America sighs, "but it's the best I can do right now. Bye, I'll see you tomorrow."

"Goodbye. Good luck," Russia says, waving. He does feel disappointed that their evening had been cut short, but wasn't going to force America to stay. He sits back down at the table alone and wonders if the injury and the phone call were somehow related.

He returns to his hotel room later that night, trying to keep his worry at bay. 'America can handle himself,' he thinks, reassuring himself as best he can.

When he goes to the meeting the next day, he doesn't see America. Just before the meeting begins, Russia informs UN that America is currently dealing with a domestic issue. UN nods and the frustrated expression he had worn fades into one of understanding.

UK looks pleased that America had not yet arrived, but Canada looks worried. Russia returns to his seat and finds himself watching the door more than listening to the meeting.

About two hours after the meeting started, America arrives, exhausted. He falls into the empty seat next to Russia with a mumbled "hi."

Russia nods in acknowledgment.

"Finally, the brat arrives!" UK mumbles sarcastically. Russia narrows his eyes, and America ignores the comment.

"He was dealing with a domestic issue. His tardiness has been excused," UN announces, looking at UK in particular.

UK rolls his eyes and glares at America. America slumps in his chair and sighs. Russia was positive that had it not been for the sunglasses; he would see large bags marred under America's eyes from another sleepless night.

"Are you okay?" Russia whispers.

America looks up before smiling softly. "Yeah, I'm okay. Just tired, you know? Didn't get any sleep last night and forgot to grab coffee on the way here," he replies quietly, shaking his head, "'sides, I don't think I'll be able to go and get any with UK here."

"I could get it for you," Russia offers, and America stares at him like he's some superhero.

"Really?" America asks, his tone hopeful. Russia nods.

"Do you care about what's in it?" Russia asks.

"Not really. I like cream and sugar, but at this point, as long as it's caffeinated, it's fine," America answers.

Russia nods and stands. UK looks up at him, suspicious of the exchange he had seen. Russia gives him a glare in return before leaving the room. He returns shortly after with a disposable cup and sits back down, handing it to America.

America takes it as if it's full of gold. Russia smiles, but his smile falls when he turns back and sees UK scowling at him.

'It was going to be a long day,' he decides.

k this probably borrows from the characterizations of “sita’s sister” but since the focus isnt on sita and rama we can brush off their whole emotional arc and say it happened while they were getting to know each other, probably on some online forum for sherlock holmes fans or something. i’ve never actually written urmilla or lakshmana before, so you’ll have to tell me if the characterization works!! i think they’d mellow out after a bit, and bond over their shared slightly wicked senses of humor and protective instincts when said instincts arent leading them to clash with each other lol. thank you for the super fun prompt, i hope you like it!!!

Urmilla frowns. “These books don’t belong here!” 

Technically, neither does Urmilla -- it’s her sister Sita who’s supposed to be meeting her internet friend/potential lover at the cafe attached to Sita’s favorite bookstore today, the only day Rama is apparently in Bombay before he has to fly back to America where he’s finishing up his MBA. 

“I’m just saying it’s suspicious,” Urmilla had said, watching from her perch on Sita’s bed as Sita tried to find a pair of earrings that would suit the color top she was wearing. She reached for a pair of gold ones, but put them back when Urmilla wrinkled her nose and picked up a pair of silver jhumkas. 

“It’s not suspicious at all,” Sita had responded. “He was only here a week, and spent those days with his family in Ayodhya. I’m just lucky we were able to find the time to meet at all after all these years.” 

“That’s my point! You’ve known each other for years, and you expect me to believe that the first time he manages to find the time to see you in person is for a few hours on the way out? If he really loved you--”  

“Urmilla!” Sita shrieked, dropping the jhumka she had been trying to thread through her left earlobe. “We’re just friends!” 

Urmilla, noting the sky-blue kurta Sita had chosen to wear -- the one everyone had always told Sita made her complexion look particularly lovely -- had rolled her eyes. As always, Sita was too soft for this cold, cruel world and so it fell to Urmilla, her intrepid younger sister to stand watch against all those who would try to break her elder sister’s heart. Sita had told her that under no circumstances was Urmilla to observe her “meeting” with Rama, but Urmilla had only kissed Sita’s cheek goodbye and, a few minutes later, changed her top, put on her glasses, and rode her scooter to the bookshop. 

“And how would you know?” a male voice asks in response to Urmilla’s earlier exclamation. He’s tall, Urmilla notes immediately, and handsome too -- but the expression on his face is slightly incredulous, as if he doesn’t believe that Urmilla could understand the mysteries of the library arts, and Urmilla feels the first tingling of rage at the base of her spine. She’s using a gap between books, the one she supposes the books he’s carrying are meant to fill, in order to spy on Rama and Sita sitting at the cafe table near the register, but, confident that Rama seems in no rush to do anything but stare across his coffee and smile at Sita like a dope, Urmilla turns to face her new adversary. 

“Do you work here or something?” Why else would he be carrying the books, she thinks, but still she’s learning to verify her assumptions before flying off the handle. 

He takes a step forward, setting the books on the edge of a random shelf. “And if I do?” 

Urmilla huffs. “These books are sorted alphabetically, rather than first being grouped by genre.”  

The man crosses his arms. “Genre can be subjective! And what if an author dabbles in more than one -- should I be spreading their work out throughout the store?” 

“Yes,” Urmilla insists, plucking out a romance from next to a robot-fantasy. “I know it’s the thought that counts, but this doesn’t even look like you thought about it! When someone’s browsing for another romantic comedy after enjoying their last one so much, should they just be wandering the store reading spines and hoping for a title that speaks to them?” 

The book leaves Urmilla’s hand, as the man flips it over and reads the back description. “Yes,” he says in return.  

“If you really believe that,” Urmilla says, somehow even more aggravated when this handsome, stupid stranger’s attention is diverted, “then you’re shit at your job and you should probably be looking for a new career.” 

For a moment, she wonders if she’s gone too far: the man looms tall, and briefly seems like he might be genuinely upset. Urmilla, like her sister, is of an average height for South Asian women and is at quite the disadvantage. Her left hand slips into her pocket where she keeps her keys, and the pocket knife attached. 

Almost like he knows what she’s thinking, the anger fades from his expression and he takes a step back. Urmilla exhales, relaxing her grip. 

“I don’t,” he admits sheepishly, “work here, I mean.” He hands her back the book. “I’ve spent the last few hours pretending I do so that I can keep an eye on my elder brother. He’s on a first date, but all of us brothers swear he’s been in love with the girl for years.” 

Intrigued, Urmilla raises an eyebrow. The cafe is a famous spot for first dates amongst a particular set, so it’s not exactly extraordinary that there might be another younger sibling hidden in the stacks. “Friends from college?” 

He snorts. “I wish. He’s never actually met the girl, but they’ve been chatting over the internet for god knows how long. At all hours of day and night too, smiling like an idiot while he types on his phone.” 

Urmilla blinks. It can’t be... “Why haven’t they met?” 

He shrugs. “As far as he’s told me, it’s partially because of her schedule and partially because of his. I think she was abroad when they first met, and then by the time she came back he got the offer to do his MBA in America. During the holidays, they’re both either working or with their families.” 

Sita was in the UK two years ago, Urmilla thinks. And she was working in Calcutta all last summer, so busy that she couldn’t even spare time for Urmilla to come and visit for a day. 

“Oh,” she says, realizing that this might be a golden opportunity. “And what type of man is your older brother? Has he had many girlfriends before this? Would he let his wife work after marriage? Does he watch porn from websites that don’t verify that the actors have safe working conditions?” 

“What,” the man splutters, and yes the last question was probably a little too much. But still, Urmilla thinks, all of these are questions of vital importance when scoping out Sita’s potential boyfriend -- who thinks this is a date! Just friends, Urmilla’s ass! 

“Would he let his wife work after marriage,” Urmilla tries again, deciding for now that she can save the question about his porn habits to ask Rama directly. Now that she thinks about it, Sita had mentioned that he had younger brothers. Pity that Urmilla had never asked Sita about their names. 

“All three of our mothers work!” Rama’s brother exclaims, and Urmilla’s eyes widen in simultaneous shock, horror, and delight. 

“Is your father a polygamist?!” she shrieks, probably smiling in the way Sita always says makes her look deranged. Urmilla just knew there was something wrong with Rama, who Sita always speaks about as if he could thread the constellations if he wanted. Oh, this is too good to keep on the inside. “I knew it!” 

“No!” Rama’s brother bellows back, “Why would you say that?” Too late, Urmilla realizes that bookstores are supposed to be quiet places, where people don’t loudly question other people’s marital habits. When she turns to look back through the gap. Rama and Sita are gone. 

“He wasn’t married to them all at once,” another man’s voice answers, and when Urmilla turns it is Rama who’s speaking, Sita at his side. Her face is flush as a beet, lips trying valiantly to turn down in a frown, but when Urmilla looks at her hand it is tangled up in Rama’s so Sita can’t possibly be that upset. Though there’s still the question of the father. Rama shrugs at Urmilla’s raised eyebrow. “He was just...unlucky in love, for a bit. But he’s been happily married for the last 20 years or so.” 

“Third time’s the charm?” Urmilla never did get an answer about Rama’s previous relationships. 

Rama smiles. “The second, actually. They broke up for about a year, and Father was....not quite at his best, perhaps.” 

Urmilla scoffs, but when presented with an acceptable answer she has no choice but to concede. Sita’s presence prevents her from re-asking some of the more ...necessary but perhaps socially crass questions on Urmilla’s mind. 

“Brother,” Rama’s brother demands, “why on earth are you even entertaining the accusations of this --” Before Urmilla can respond, Rama raises his hand, and immediately, miraculously, his brother falls silent. Point to Rama. 

“For the same reason that you’ve been here hiding away from me since, I assume, the moment you dropped me off at 10 am.” 

“Wait,” Sita interjects, “weren’t we supposed to meet at 12?” Rama blushes as Sita’s smile grows. “Were you really waiting for me all this time?” 

“Yes, yes, he’s very sweet and was worried that he would be caught up in traffic,” Rama’s brother responds, brushing away Sita’s delight in favor of turning to Urmilla and glaring. “But that doesn’t answer my question. I was being a good brother and trying to make sure that your date went as planned.” 

“And that required you poorly impersonate a shop assistant? Think about the amount of work you’ve created for the people who actually work here!” 

“I didn’t want to be kicked out!” 

“No one gets kicked out of a bookstore, you piece of--”

“Urmilla!” 

Now it’s Rama’s brother’s turn to blink as if something has just occurred to him. “Brother,” he says slowly, “didn’t you say she had a sister? Ur-something.”

at eighteen she’d graduated highschool salutatorian with offers from university of pennsylvania & brown university . in all honesty she didn’t wnat to go to college , she saw it as a complete waste of her time . it wasn’t like she was going to do anything with the degree anyways . it would simply be a point of bragging for her parents at events & at this point she really could care less about them being able to brag to their friends . she knew she had to play along though , because this was the same year she was going to receive her first half of her trust fund ( a whoopin 500m , yes her trust fund in total will be 1b her parents are grossly wealthy guys ) so she bamboozled ? her parents , promising she’d committed to attending penn just so they’d allow for the money to be released to her account . she moved out of the house , literally moving into a house of her own a couple blocks from her parents house & claimed she was living in pennsylvania for college . we stan a sneaky binch .

two months later her parents were at her front door , though , ready to give her an ear full . her mother basically disowned her at this point . telling her how every year jalissa found a new way to be a bigger disappointment . her dad kind of played good cop , like he normally would because her mother often dug into her pretty deeply . to the point where any insecurity ( even though with the way she carries herself you’d never think she has any ) she has stems from something her mother has said / called her in the past . if henry berkowitz had a soft spot , it was certainly jalissa , it that had only grown clearly with the harsher austen became on the girl .
