hello! i'm gira, i go by she/her, and i've been making fanart for the cod fandom for about four months now :) the majority of that time's been spent on the soapbox saga, which is sort of just what i call the very plot-ridden porn comic featuring ghost, soap and konig. and recently i've been working on the monster 141 au!

i'm here to address the reasoning behind how i assigned certain monsters to certain characters, particularly the POC characters as well as accusations of racism regarding me neglecting gaz in all my art :) whoever you are, if you're reading this in good faith, i thank you! i earnestly never intended to make anyone feel uncomfortable from my work.

The Monster AU

i won't post the blog who brought this issue up mainly because, (realistically speaking) i think people might go after them and spam them with hate so I'm paraphrasing here. but basically..."how come all the POC in the Monster AU are assigned animal-associated monsters? Comparisons to animals can be incredibly demeaning when it comes to minorities".

I completely agree! But earnestly, I think my desire to assign every character a 'monster' that was relevant to their culture overshadowed the part of my brain that would've raised red flags about this sort of thing. There's the argument here that I could've assigned these characters cooler monsters such as Price who is a dragon, and Ghost who is a wraith, but I wanted to be respectful of all the minorities in the COD cast by giving them creatures that reflected their culture and personality.

ALEJANDRO - NAGUAL

In the Monster AU, Alejandro is a nagual, which is considered a guardian spirit in Mesoamerican culture. Typically, it's said that the nagual is the shapeshifted form that powerful men can transform into in order to do evil (although that doesn't apply in this case, Ale's a heroic lad), and can come in the forms of a jaguar, deer, dog or bird. I chose a jaguar, since it seemed to be the most common form of nagual depiction in the resources I was looking at. The 'panther mode' isn't pre-established as part of nagual mythology, but since most panthers are just black jaguars, i thought the association wouldn't be unreasonable.

I chose Alejandro to be a nagual because it's so in character for him to be protective of his home. The idea of him being a literal guardian spirit for all he considers his just made sense to me :)

RODOLFO (RUDY) - CADEJOS

In this AU, Rudy is the vessel for two cadejos, which are legendary dog spirits popular in the mythology of Central America, parts of South America and Mexico. Historically, they've been known as psychopomps (guides to help humans into the afterlife following their death) but modern interpretation has shifted to depict them as the good guardian dog and the evil attacking dog respectively.

A lot of the minute information about the cadejos tends to differ depending on the source. Like whether they're actually two separate dogs, or they're the same dog just in different 'modes', or how big they are. My personal depiction of them has them sized as normal dogs (although their spirit nature means they can move into small spaces pretty easily by just becoming immaterial temporarily) and as separate spirits that have been passed down through Rudy's family generationally.

I chose the cadejo for Rudy because although I wanted to include him in the Monster AU, i still liked keeping him as a character who was a bit more 'human' than Alejandro. I think Ale needs Rudy to hold him back sometimes, and having the two cadejo definitely helps with that. Sort of like how cheetahs in zoos have therapy dogs growing up because they're so anxious all the time! I think it also does a good job of showing Rudy's two sides as well, like he's a softie who just wants to protect those he loves, but he's capable of a lot of violence too.

VALERIA - GORGON

Valeria is a gorgon which, admittedly, is not part of Mexican mythology. However, I was put in a bit of a bind here, since my research didn't really reveal to me a monster in Mexican culture that I thought would suit Valeria's vibe (manipulative, elulsive) and I just felt like a gorgon would be perfect for her. Medusa's myth has her being continuously demeaned by the men in her life and is a symbol of female empowerment, which I thought was a great reflection of the implied reason that Valeria left the army was due to internal sexism. There's also the perfect parallel of how anyone who sees El Sin Nombre's face dies, and Medusa's whole 'turn you to stone' thing.

I thought i could compromise by making Valeria a gorgon but her hair would be Mexican black kingsnakes but...turns out they're actually not that dangerous. Some people even keep them as pets! So I decided to keep the visual, but make her a pit viper, a subfamily of vipers found in the Americas as well as Eurasia.

HORANGI - HAETAE

Horangi is a haetae (해태) which is a beast in Korean mythology that typically comes in the form of a horned lion or dog. It's prevalent in a lot of cultures in East Asia actually, although it goes under different names depending on the region - kaichi for Japan, xiezhi for China. I made Horangi a tiger variant on the creature because...well...'horangi' means 'tiger' in korean. It just made sense to me to put that little twist on it.

Typically, haetae are seen as spirits of judgement, that decide on innocent and guilty parties in disputes and punish the latter. It's also considered a guardian against fire (hence the fire immunity and cloud manipulation powers I gave him).

GAZ - HARPY

Gaz is a harpy which, I won't lie, was purely inspired by the fact that he seems to keep falling out of helicopters. But it's also because...yeah, I did neglect Gaz in the soapbox saga. But I think I neglected...everyone in the soapbox saga who weren't directly involved in the main ship. I sort of just tunnel visioned on the main three, so my exclusion of characters isn't just limited to Gaz, it was included Price, Laswell, Alejandro, Rudy, Graves etc.

I just want to make clear that my treatment of Gaz in particular isn't reflective of any inner preference against him. And to make good on that, me assigning Gaz wings of all things was to help me spend more time on him in the Monster AU! I think the contrast between Gaz being an upstart harpy, and Price being a one-winged dragon has a lot of potential as a mentor/protege relationship (and perhaps even something more) and it's why I assigned this monster to him. I really wanted to establish a connection upfront, but just making Gaz another dragon felt cheap - the harpy thing felt a little more in turn with his character :)

I really hope this cleared up any remaining frustrations with my designs for the Monster AU. I hope you can see that I never meant anything demeaning by assigning these monsters to their respective characters - in fact, I earnestly tried to go out of my way and be respectful to their backgrounds.

In any case, if you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer them - I'd just ask you to please ask politely :)

At some point last year, I came up with my design for a Giratina-Volo hybrid. I recently decided to start referring to him as Distortion Volo (I was just calling him Gira!Volo before, but that's basically the JP ship name for Giratina/Volo so I wanted to get away from it).

I'm pretty sure that Giratina is based off of centipedes, but centipedes are NOT hot to me (sorry if you like centipedes, you're still valid though) so I drew inspiration from snakes for his design. There's just something so appealing about naga Volo. <3

The idea of a Gira-Volo hybrid first came up in the volokari server. During this conversation, I doodled this rough little comic to illustrate the potential application of spooky ghost tendrils in a horror setting.

From this point on, I could not stop thinking about Distortion Volo. I quickly came up with an AU for him. I've only been able to get out a few ideas in sketches/drawings, but I have SO MANY IDEAS for this silly danger noodle.

Even though the initial doodle was more horror-themed, because I'm me, this AU eventually turned into a silly romcom about Dawn and her weird eldritch abomination bf.

I won't go into too much detail but here are the basics for this AU.

It takes place post game PLA. Volo works through his conflicting feelings for Akari/Dawn and basically goes from obsessive and jealous to obsessive and possessive. Dawn is depressed and wants to return to her original time, so Volo strikes a deal with Giratina and fuses with them, allowing him to use Gira's power to bring Dawn back to modern Sinnoh. From there it's mostly just silly hijinks with Dawn and her weird monster guy who clings to her whether she likes it or not.

Unfortunately, some of my Distortion Volo art is too spicy for tumblr so I can't share it here. But whenever I draw some sfw danger noodles, I'll be sure to share them here!

Gira is the creator of the famous monster 141 au, they’re called bluegiragi on Twitter and have a tumblr acc along with a tiktok acc

Recently someone noticed that they followed and liked an artist who creates racist art, then they made a loose attempt at apologizing which wasn’t very well received and now ppl are discovering more and more problematic things about them

I think that Gira person did get accused of being racist earlier on when her monster au was just starting to become popular. She did explain why she made the poc more animal-based monsters but it felt more on the defensive side, at least to me. I always felt iffy about her whenever her works came up in my dash, so finding out the creator was actually very weird and disturbing wasn't really a surprise.

But anyways, I hope your bones recover, man. Idk how bone marrow works but I hope you'll be good as new

Aaaah gotcha. Idk I never noticed that the poc were more animal like because the only monster without like animalistic ears or tail was Simon.

Also thanks for the love dude :Dd, my bones are doing good, back pain is slowly getting better and bone marrow regenerates in like 1-1.5 months, but the emberassment of knowing that there are now people besides my parents that know what my ass looks like will live with me for ever.

About Jäger [ENG/ESP]

Ok I am going to make a text post I can easily link to for those curious about this fiction/AU!

Jäger is a fanfiction/project I have been in since 2013 (sadly it is on a permanent hiatus right now for personal reasons). Set from 1850 to 1870 in an alternate, Steampunk Europe, the main plot followed the life of Gilbert Beilschmidt, a townsman hunter whose life is suddenly destroyed when the whole town burns to ashes during the attack of two creatures. Just before he is saved from the fire by a stranger, he swears to take vengeance on Ivan Braginski, the infamous vampire who is terrorizing the East of Europe.

And that marks the start of the long, tortuous journey that Gilbert has to walk in order to take revenge on the fallen. But he would never walk alone! Elizabeta, Ludwig, Roderich, Basch and Evangeline, Feliciano, Francis and Antonio and many others (coffcoffRameshcoffcoff) would be there with him as he searches for Ivan. 

Mixing the charm of the Victorian era with all kinds of mythological and fantastical creatures from all kinds of different countries and regions, and with big doses of desperation and drama as characters die (like, major characters I tell you) or get turned into monsters themselves, this is for sure my most ambitious piece ever!

Jäger es un fanfiction/proyecto en el que llevo trabajando desde 2013 (por desgracia, se encuentra en hiatus permanente por razones personales). ¡Mezclando el encanto de la época Victoriana con toda clase de criaturas mitológicas y fantásticas de todo tipo de países y regiones, y con grandes dosis de desesperación y drama conforme mueren personajes (y estoy hablando de personajes importantes) o son transformados en monstruos ellos mismos, considero esta mi obra más ambiciosa con diferencia!

En español podéis disfrutar de los 8 primeros capítulos de Jäger sin ningún tipo de problema. Mi intención es conseguir continuar la historia algún día, así que saber que tengo lectores más allá de mis amigos cercanos me ayudaría muchísimo a encontrar motivación para ello así que, ¡no os cortéis! ¡Mandadme un DM si la habéis leído y os ha interesado!

TO ALL THE MONSTERS I’VE LOVED BEFORE

La Universidad Nacional de Seúl es conocida por ser una de las más prestigiosas de todo el país y a nivel mundial. Con un programa de intercambio que permite que sus estudiantes puedan ingresar a universidades extranjeras como Harvard, Yale y Stanford, es reconocida a nivel internacional.

Sin embargo, una vez que entras, descubres que hay más cosas de las que te habías enterado al momento de matricularte. Y una de estas cosas es que... no todos los estudiantes son lo que parecen.

Misteriosas historias de fantasmas circulan por los pasillos, estudiantes que afirman haber visto sangre en los ascensores, otros que oyen gritos de auxilio por las noches y algunos que aseguran haber visto estudiantes que hacia años se graduaron.

Y es que una cosa que no te dicen cuando ingresas a la SNU es que... algunos estudiantes son monstruos. Y lo que ellos no saben es que hay cazadores al acecho.

                       ¿Preparado para este Halloween? Se sentirá más real que otros años.

INFORMACIÓN OOC.

¿En qué consiste la actividad? En un AU donde los estudiantes son monstruos. La trama de esta actividad gira en torno a estos seres sobrenaturales que ocultan su naturaleza, pero también hay cazadores dentro de la universidad que intentan eliminarlos y los humanos que no saben qué sucede.

¿Todos los personajes deben ser monstruos? No. Si quieren que su personaje continúe como humano, puede seguir siéndolo sin ningún problema. Si quieren que su personaje sea un ser sobrenatural, podrán añadirlo en las descripciones de sus blogs para que todos puedan verlo (lo mismo si es cazador). Ahora, si quieren hacer una mini biografía o con datos importantes sobre el personaje como monstruo, puede publicarlas en #monsterbefore (puede publicar aesthetics también).

¿Cómo se roleará? ¿Afectará las relaciones que tienen los personajes? Sí y no. Si dos personajes son amigos, y uno es humano y otro un vampiro, por ejemplo, afectará su dinámica en el caso de que el vampiro se lo confiese al humano o que este lo descubra bebiendo sangre. Sin embargo, una vez terminado el AU eso jamás habrá sucedido en la trama principal. Pueden hacer lo que quieran con sus personajes en lo que dure la actividad, todo volverá a la normalidad en noviembre.

¿Cuánto durará? Desde este miércoles 18 de octubre hasta el 31 de octubre.

okay, first of all, absolutely goddamn feral about you, your art, writing, ideas and aus i am chewing on the bars of my cage and foaming at the mouth and screeching incoherent and rolling around on the floor and- ough... anyway

i do have a very self indulgent question, particularly about Monster AU Ghost and Price, but also extending towards the rest of 141 with their involvement

at one point you mentioned that wraiths were rare, and ghost would likely feel pity towards another one

what would happen if they did come across another wraith? especially someone fairly fresh, maybe even young, younger than any of them. is there anything anyone could do to help them? would they help? price seems to know how to handle ghost well enough, and seems like hes been around since ghost's transformation, but how would ghost himself handle seeing someone else go through something like what he did? if he had to, what advice would he give them that he never got?

this!! is!! such a good question, anon!!!! I think there's a lot of sides to that kind of situation, especially if it’s a younger person since I hc Ghost as having a massive soft spot for kids.

I think if it was just Ghost and the newly-born wraith, he'd try to mercy-kill it. The circumstances that lead to the creation of a wraith are truly harrowing, and while Simon understands the desire for revenge that burns at the core of every freshly made wraith, he also believes their plight is a kind of torture. In his mind, it would be kind to put one out of their misery. He wouldn't take any pleasure in it - I think overall, it would be a miserable affair for all parties involved.

If Price or any of the others were around, I think they’d try to convince him to take them under his wing so to speak. But while Ghost currently operates decently with his support system, he’s extremely lucky and should be considered the exception to the trend. Price was instrumental in his recovery - years of working under him solidified Price in his subconscious as an authority figure he could trust. When Ghost lost control, he could still rely on instinct - even with his mind fracturing, Price never changed. But not everyone has this kind of person immediately available to them, and it was crucial that Price got to him as soon as he did. What Ghost is now is not what a wraith commonly looks like. Price dragged him back from a brink.

New wraiths are sort of like rabid dogs, with no sense of self preservation. They’d approach every confrontation with the kind of frenzy you’d see in someone fighting for their life. They’d also be basically impossible to immobilize - you’ve seen how Simon goes wispy at times, imagine trying to handcuff a cloud of smoke. If it came down to a situation where any of the 141 were in danger, Ghost wouldn’t hold back. He’d put the other wraith down.

But if Ghost met another wraith who’d survived that first explosion of fury and managed to calm down, AND the 141 were with him, I think he’d try to help. They bring out the best in him.
