Brest Ch R2: Gilles Simon def. Matteo Arnaldi [6] 6-2, 6-2 mid-match stats (2nd set)
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
G. Simon was that solid from start to finish. Almost flawless, but mostly it was a combination of keeping his intensity in the rallies and the strong service game that followed. From there, he was able to break down Arnaldi's defenses, slowly but steadily. And here was how this unfolded.
Although Arnaldi scored 3 aces, it was not enough to counter G. Simon's first serves solidity, since the latter won 79% of his points from there. Furthermore, although it looked like "nobody got second serves," Arnaldi's second serves were the most vulnerable by committing 2 double faults, hence he only won only 21% of his points from there.
Or, it was a result of the solid return games G. Simon played. By controlling the rallies from the baseline alone, he created 9 chances to break, and he managed to convert 4 of them (and won some good points from there, an example is a forehand winner exactly from the middle of the court). These conversions from defense to offense were played nicely until it drove Arnaldi to err his shots to close the points at most times. Arnaldi, however, had his chances: he had 2 break points earlier and some additional ones (around 2 more) before this match ended; but, G. Simon could come in a clutch, thanks to his service games), hence he could not convert any of them.

With this loss, Arnaldi did not qualify for the NextGen Finals. The 8 qualifiers are now set, which are:
🇮🇹 Lorenzo Musetti
🇩🇰 Holger Rune
🇬🇧 Jack Draper
🇺🇸 Brandon Nakashima
🇨🇿 Jiri Lehecka
(TPE) Chun-Hsin Tseng
🇮🇹 Francesco Passaro
🇨🇭 Dominic Stricker (he just pulled out of Roanne Challenger as well, which coincided with the NextGen Finals).
On the other hand, G. Simon will face Gregoire Barrere, who earlier defeated Beibit Zhukayev 6-2, 6-4. Looking at the state of this match, this would be really interesting. Another generation clash (but not too far this time) and simultaneously a derby. Always interested to see how this turned out, but highly encouraged to tune in to savor the moment before G. Simon retires next week.

I’m happy Gilles is doing much better, but I’m afraid that if they go into a third set they’ll both collapse on court. They are clearly at the end of their rope.
