 Climb The Attic
https://lukecunningtonphotography.tumblr.com/
Climb the Attic are a four piece alternative rock band straight out of London. Founded by Hugh (vocals/guitar) and Ronnie (guitar) in 2014 while studying music, the band got its name from the guys looking for a band name that would play on the word "climax". They discovered their childhood bedrooms were up in the attic, where they used to climb to practice and escape the world. "Climatic" morphed into "climb" and Climb The Attic were born.
I got the chance to see these guys perform at The Alleycat Bar on Denmark Street and I was really impressed! There was a great drum opening section with a heavy rock feel to it, loads of energy from the drummer and a tight technique on the kick drum and with his fills.
The lead singer engaged really well with the crowd, chatting and joking around. His vocals were strong, raw and rough, using a clear and natural crying technique for adding more emotion into certain songs. I was also in awe at his beautiful vocal flips and adlibs! Absolute brilliant singer!
Although these guys had a main alternative rock vibe going on, there were some slight metal influences too such as the chords and rhythms used especially in the breakdown section of their second song of the set. The mixture between melodic rock vocals and harmonies with the metal sound really complimented each other and each breakdown section had me head banging along with the rest of the crowd!
A quick mention on the performance from every member of Climb The Attic, the bassist was really feeling the music, the vocalist was the centre of attention, the drummer was wild and the other guitarist was loving every second!
It’s nice when you go to a gig with emerging bands playing and seeing fans there singing along to every song and this is what I could see when Climb The Attic were playing. The audience were really enjoying it and I can definitely say I did too. Nice work guys, keeping gigging and I hope to see Climb The Attic play again!

EJK started off as a project “the album 1 in 7” then became much more than that. Now EJK is a fully formed band playing concerts, festivals and fundraisers. Based in Guilford but happy to travel, this band is formed of some amazing and diverse musicians.
Saturday 29th April, I got the chance to see Everyone Just Knows live at The Boileroom for the Rock 4 Refugees event, and seriously, these guys are awesome! The Boileroom itself was a great venue, with a proper VIP feel for the bands on stage with the front of stage barrier and a large area for the audience. To get through into the stage, you had to clamber through a small hatch, however when two people are loading in gear, this is actually a rather efficient way of getting gear straight into position. The venue itself had a real rock vibe to it, with all the posters from previous events plastered to the walls and ceiling!
Moving onto, with an Evanescence vibe, EJK included dark melodies and deep lyrics, with counter melody riffs between the bassist and guitarist, adding a real unique texture to their set, and some call and response techniques through their performance.
Their lead singer EJ, brings a huge female presence to the stage and her interaction with the rest of the band is touching and truly shows the meaning of being in a band.
Her strong adlibs in her falsetto range are seriously haunting, especially during their song ‘Goodbye Faith’ which had a Nothing But Thieves vibe going on. They tell most performers to open their eyes during a performance, however EJ’s performance with closed eyes throughout really added to this mysterious aesthetic that she was producing. This song opened with a magical vocal acapella section which followed an ancient Celtic sound.
Drummer Max, played with extreme tightness which complimented the feel of the set, throughout every song he maintained a perfect beat and his fills and solo skills were on point.
Alongside their originals, EJK performed a cover of ‘Drive’ by Incubus which had a naturally lazy falsetto vocal which matched perfectly to a Nirvana sort of vibe, with the guitars playing a ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ style riff.
Their song ‘With You’ had a metal influence with dirty, chunky rhythms, enough to make you head bang throughout the entire song!
I really enjoyed their set and I can definitely say I am 100% a fan and will definitely be going to see them perform again! Go ahead and check them out here!

Ciircus Street are a Reading based duo who, together, write their music with a focus on harmonising their unique vocals. Since forming in 2015, they have gigged across the country in numerous venues including the infamous Ronnie Scott’s and The Barfly in London.
I spoke to Ciircus Street to talk about their career!
Hi guys!
What is Ciircus Street about? What is your sound and concept?
For me, Ciircus Street is about making music we both love to make, that we’re both excited and passionate about, and having a good time with it. We try not to take ourselves too seriously, and to deliver music we hope people like as much as we do. The concept and the sound tie in together quite well, as the whole thing is sort of part of our style, the two lead vocalists, drawing from some of the old school music that was very vocally driven (simon and garfunkel, beach boys etc) and bringing those elements into the new, and just trying something different with it I guess. Who are your members and what do you play for Ciircus Street? I’m Jim, I play keys and I’m joint lead vocals. I also play the shaker when called upon (at the moment almost every song) . And I'm Sam, I play guitar and joint lead vocals, and don't play shaker in any songs (Currently, we'll see how it goes)
What made you want to start a band and how did you start up? That’s a long story, basically we ended up going to see Saint Raymond, and on the way to the venue in Oxford, we walked past the road sign for Circus Street, and casually agreed it would make a good band name, then, at the gig after a few (too many) beers, something made us decide to start a band, and we pretty much went from there, I think we had our first writing session the next week If you could bring back any music inspirations, who would it be and why?
I’d love to see what Elvis Presley’s take on the current industry would be, young Elvis though, not fat old Elvis, Heartbreak Hotel Elvis.  - Jim
And I'd bring back Tupac, I feel he would still be making a big impact on the hip-hop scene, and I would love to see where he would take it. And the same with Kurt Cobain, I've always been a big Nirvana fan, and I'd love to see what they would be doing now. - Sam
What are your plans for the future? Any venues or festivals you dream of playing at?
Within the next year we’re planning on releasing our first single, maybe a tour and then releasing our EP, everything’s written and ready, we just need to get it all into the studio, and figure out a way to make it sound awesome basically. Obviously festival wise I think we’d both love to play Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds, any of the massive festivals, that would be such a good opportunity, and it would be amazing fun. We did play Ronnie Scott’s last year which was awesome. As for personal goals, there’s this festival where I’m from in Wallingford called Bunkfest, I’ve been going to it since I was a little kid, and the festival was in the back garden of a pub, and we’re hopefully finally playing this year, after asking so many times! I found out the other day it’s now the largest free folk festival in Europe, which is pretty sweet (although I did hear that down the pub)
What has been challenging about setting up this band and starting from the very beginning of your career?
The main challenge for us has been managing our time, and trying to fit in earning a living alongside pushing our music career, there are only so many jobs that will let you have days off all the time, and most of them don’t pay very well, but where we work now is pretty good, our bosses are very understanding when it comes to swapping shifts and taking time off, I guess if we ever make it big we'll have to buy them a pint.
Can you give some advice for people starting out in a band?
Our main advice, and I know this sounds corny, is just to do whatever you want, if you find an idea you like, run with it, and once people start realising it’s good, they’ll run with you, and it’ll pick up from there. Also ask your friends opinions, they’ll have your back. We almost changed our name to Diamond City about 5 months in and when I told my friends they all just laughed and said it sounded like the name of a strip club.
Any events or exciting plans coming up?
We’re shooting our first music video on the 17th of may, for our single Mouth Like That, so stay tuned! Then at the end of the month we’re planning a little 5 day tour, we’re thinking London, Reading, Maidenhead, Brighton and Southampton, or something along those lines

Eszter Mics and the Sisters’ is a brand new emerging alternative-pop band consisting of 6 dedicated female musicians, fronted by the Hungarian-born Singer-Songwriter Eszter Mics.
The members of the band came together from all around the world creating a beautiful atmospheric accompaniment for Eszter’s captivating, eclectic, playful and meaningful original songs.
Tonight, these guys headlined The Star in Guildford for their EP release and wow. Just wow. What an amazing band! With sexy rhythms and harmonies, these guys really made the night theirs and brought in a huge and captivated audience! This band consists of six extremely talented female musicians, with a strong presence and a folky/pop vibe.
Throughout their entire set, they kept on amazing me with small unique textures which really lightened up and defined the music such as a jazzy piano breakdown in their first song with some really unusual but beautiful chords, a lovely flute solo from Eszter and then throwing out bubbles to the crowd to use during their last song and recent single ‘Lemonade’.
There was also a huge range of instruments being used in this set, including a surprise saxophonist and trumpet player making an appearance in ‘Lemonade’ which really got the crowd going wild.
With complex time signatures, groove, sick fills and memorable solos from Ishara, this drummer really drove the rest of the band in time really well, and gave a great performance whilst playing.
The bassist and guitarist showed some intense performance between each other and Eszter with some chilled out solo playing and a bass tone that literally shook the room and rumbled the chairs!
I want to mention the amazing vocal ability of the two backing vocalists, who both sang some unexpected but incredible harmonies including the amazing soprano range of Nora, during each song and keeping up some true performances, constantly smiling and dancing perfectly in time, looking like they were really enjoying themselves. I especially want to mention the haunting and mesmerizing a capella section at the beginning of one of their songs where they gradually added a new harmony each time.  There was so much emotion in every single song from all members but specifically lead singer and piano player Ezster and such a strong vocal tone with attitude and conviction. You could really tell she meant every word she was saying.
I really enjoyed every song that they performed tonight from their new EP, I suggest you all go and check them out and give them a listen!

The ‘Alice in Wonderland’ of contemporary music. Ruby Duff is a Yorkshire home grown niche artist breaking London and the mainstream with her alternative pop music. Drawing from trends past and present, her music is eclectic; bringing a new sound to the scene.
I’m joined by Ruby today to ask a few questions about her career!
I’d like to ask you what is your sound and where do you get your inspiration from?
My inspiration is so eclectic (from the likes of AC/DC and Joni Mitchel to Mura Massa and FKA Twigs) hence the alternative genre I have gone for. I try to draw from trends past and present by exploring analogue features and digital punctuation to bring a new sound to the scene.
What instruments do you play for you act? Do you write your own songs?
I am the lead singer and artist, writing my own music and occasionally playing bass in the band.
What gave you the inspiration to start up as a solo musician?
For me there is no real story, it was something from within (like in the cheesy way I was born and meant to do this) because I remember being 4, seeing a leaflet for a music group and knowing that’s all I wanted to…and that is all I have ever done and worked towards.
If you could bring back one of your music inspirations, who would it be and why?
Judy Garland. We don’t hear enough artist’s out there now who focus on tone over image. She never let her personal life represent her music and for that I admire and adore her.
What are you plans and goals for the future? Where do you see yourself playing and what are your dream events/venues to play?
I plan to be gigging around London from June onwards to ultimately reach my fan base that can support my artistry and so that I can give back to the people who have helped me along the way. I see myself playing alternative festivals like Doune the Rabbit Hole, Green Man, All Tomorrow’s Parties, Secret Garden Party, and Board Masters. But my absolute dream would be to travel the world with my music, sharing it in the most secluded as well as populated areas…mining for rubys.
What advice could you give to someone who are looking to kickstart their dream as a solo artist?
Write your songs; know who you are and what you stand for before then approaching band members. Knowing this and what you want your sound to be, will successfully execute a creative set list.
Do you have any events or exciting plans coming up you’d like us to share for you?
As mentioned previously, I will be migrating my music towards the London area. Although I’m originally from the North (Leeds), I feel my fan base is more London based in the creative arts areas such as Camden, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, and Soho.
My next gig will be June 2nd @229 Great Portland St, London W1W 5PN. This is an alternative music night, packed with up and coming acts/music. More dates soon to be released…
I’ve noticed you tag ‘mining for rubys’ on a lot of your media and releases, what does this mean?
Mining for rubys is in some way me reach out to my fans. I believe there are so many ‘diamonds in the rough’ out there that want to listen to music like mine due to their artistically intelligent and expressive background. I want to find the underdogs, and know them and share my passion for music. However, mining for rubys is a much bigger scheme, which in the long term will offer a lot more to my fans. You’ll just have to keep hash tagging and keep an eyeout to find out more…
Thanks for today Ruby, it’s been great getting to know more about you as a solo artist!

Peter Getty is a Glasgow based singer/songwriter who has been writing and playing since childhood. Initially inspired by Peter Criss of KISS, Peter was a drummer/singer, and cut his first demo at 13 years old, singing and co writing the track “Here We Call Here We Stand”. After performing in many various bands as drummer, Peter made the decision to move to centre stage and fronted Glasgow band “Exit”. He then moved on to performing solo acoustic before taking an extended sabbatical when his first daughter was born. Returning to the stage a few years ago, Peter once again performed solo acoustic, before hooking up with Mark Robertson on guitar (initially the duo were a three piece, with a mutual friend playing bass). They still performed acoustically, but always with a view to eventually forming a full band to perform the songs the way Peter recorded them. Recruiting Declyn Emslie on drums & Richi Neville on bass, Peter & The Stone River Band, after only two rehearsals, made their live, full band debut at The ABC2, Glasgow, on Saturday 5th May 2012 Following a sudden parting of ways with Declyn, Colin Hunter rocked the drum stool for a show at Stereo, Glasgow, before John Hesford became the band's new drummer. Multi instrumentalist and multi talented Frazer Mackay joined at the same time. Peter & the band recorded their debut EP in April 2014, and with a full album due in late 2017.
I caught up with Peter about his career in the band!
Hi Peter! I’d like to start by asking you who is Peter Getty and The Stone River Band? What makes your sound and where does your inspiration come from?
Sometimes we get called hard rock, sometimes just rock, sometimes 'roots rock', but to me it is all just rock & roll. All my songs start with me and an acoustic guitar, so they are ostensibly folk and country songs. Then I play them with the band and they become loud folk and country songs!
I have been a singer/songwriter for a long time, and I write all the songs.I'm incredibly lucky to have a band that believes in my vision and my work, and that give themselves to helping me bring my work to life.
Lyrically, all my songs are stories in some fashion. Some are stories about love or loss, some are funny, and some are social and political commentary. I work hard on my songs; there is nothing more gratifying than someone telling me they relate to a particular lyric or song, or when my work is used to help causes I believe in.
I approach our live shows in the same fashion; everyone is welcome so there has to be something for everyone, and the show cannot be one dimensional. I can say what I have to say about the state of politics with 'Whose Side Are You On?" & "Soul to Save"; I can sing about relationships going wrong and hearts being broken with "Snake Eyes" and Goodbye to You"; I can give my message of hope to my hometown with "Our Town", then we can have some fun with my 100% autobiographical and true (Honest...) "(I Was A) Teenaged Lapsed Catholic"!
Even though I feel I have a message, it is important to remember that hey, it's only rock & roll! And rock & roll should be fun. In these tough times, it is important to have fun and dance!
Who are your members and what instruments do you all play in the band?
Peter Getty: Lead Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica
Mark Robertson Guitar, vocals
Richard Neville: bass
Frazer Mackay: Guitars, Harmonica,Keyboards,Mandolin
John Hesford Drums,Vocals
I am lucky to have such a great band. I wouldn't swap any of them.
How does the story of your band being born go? What gave you the idea to start up as a rock influenced band?
As far as The Stone River Band goes, I had been playing solo for years, then Mark and I started performing as a duo. All the demos we were cutting were always full band rock tracks though, and having a band was always the goal.
The good people at PM Music booked us to open a four act bill in the O2 ABC2 in Glasgow and Lisa from PM said "why dont you guys put together a band for it?" So Mark called a drummer friend of his (Declyn Elmslie) and we found Richi through a mutual friend, and we played the first Stone River Band with that line up.
We had that line up for a while and played some great, great shows. John and Frazer then joined us and we got even better. Then one day short of the band's second anniversary, we were back at the O2 ABC2, but this time as headliners.
My brother Punky was always my main inspiration. He introduced me to KISS and Bruce Springsteen. The first gig I ver saw was Heavy Pettin' in the Barrowlands, Glasgow. When i saw the crowd go nuts, I knew exactly what i wanted to do. I recorded my first demo that year in our home studio. That was many moons and many bands ago!
If you could bring back one of your music influences, who would it be?
Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici of the E Street Band
What are you plans for the future? Where do you see yourself playing and what are your dream events/venues to play?
Really, my only goal is for each show to be the best we can deliver, to leave the audience feeling like they have been part of something special. I've played all sorts of places and I give it my best whether it is a little bar or the ABC2 or the beautiful Recital Rooms. Of course it would be awesome to play huge arenas, and I really want to play the Hard Rock Cafe, but you gimme a guitar and an audience and I'm happy! I'd play a pay toilet and use my own change!
What have been the biggest challenges about setting up a band and starting from the very beginning of your career? What advice could you give to someone who are looking to pursue their band dream?
Money first and foremost. Guitars and drums and equipment costs money. Rehearsal studios and recording studios cost money. Travelling to and from gigs costs money. As the song says, it is a long way to the top if you wanna rock & roll!
I was lucky that I had a brother that was in a signed, touring band, workng with Brian May, KISS, Motley Crue, Ozzy etc,so I had an inside view to the business part of the music business. Folks think that you get signed, get a big advance and off you go, but it is al money that has to be paid back.
Being a performing musician is incredibly hard word, but creating  music and performing music is what makes the rest of it worthwhile. That is why it is called 'playing'!
If there is anyone out there that wants to start a band, I'd say "forget dreams of mansions and sports cars; learn your craft, work hard and just do it! It is a hoot!"
Do you have any events or exciting plans coming up you’d like us to share for you?
We have a show coming up on May 17th in Ivory Black's, Oswald Street,Glasgow (tickets £6, which can be reserved by messaging us at our Facebook page!) which will be the start of a run of shows for us, as we get back to it after a period off.
We will have a new album coming out soon, our first full length album, and in the buildup to that, we'll be doing a lot of shows, a well as sharing some acoustic videos on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/PeterGettyTheStoneRiverBand)
We have a lot of overseas fans, especially in the USA,via our Reverb Nation page (www.reverbnation.com/petergetty) so we are planning to broadcast some shows via Facebook Live and other streaming services.
Thank you so much for joining me today! It’s been lovely getting to know you guys.
Thanks for inviting us to talk to ya!

EJK started off as a project “the album 1 in 7” then became much more than that. Now EJK is a fully formed band playing concerts, festivals and fundraisers. Based in Guilford but happy to travel, this band is formed of some amazing and diverse musicians. Lead singer, EJ kindly answered our questions for today’s feature!
I’d like to start by asking you what is EJK bout? Where do you get your inspiration from?
I guess there’s not one specific answer for the question. We all listen to such a variety of musicians and genres.
Max (drummer)  inspired by Guns n' Roses, Cream, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the Killers
EJ (vocalist) is inspired by artist’s and bands such as Queen, Sixx A.M., Evanescence,  Joan Jett, Stone Sour, Pink, Foo Fighters, Halestorm, Madonna, Tina Turner.
Jake (guitarist) inspired by a number of artists and styles ranging from Motley Crue, Guns n Roses and Sixx AM through to BB King and blues styles.
Ben (bassist) idolising bassists such as Steve Harris (Jamiroquai), Dirk Lance (Incubus) as well as Flea (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and Fieldy (Korn)
Who are your members and what instruments do you all play in the band?
EJ Kempson: Vocalist, Guitarist
Jake Hodgson: Guitarist
Ben Harris: Bass
Max Crook: Drums
How did EJK come to be?
EJK started off as a project “the album 1 in 7” then became much more than that. EJ and Jake are the original two members, their old drummer suggested they do some gigs, so they found Ben through contacts on Facebook. Everyone got on like a house on fire, but the old drummer Reiss had to leave. Max was EJ’s drum tutor and she recommended him to come to one of their rehearsals and all the pieces just kind of came together.
If you could bring back one of your music inspirations, who would it be and why?
We all would bring back someone completely different, it’s kind of a hard question. Unfortunately the truth is much as we miss or wish we could see our heroes, but the sad truth is that if they hadn’t have past on, then there wouldn’t have been room for some of our modern heroes.
What are you plans and goals for the future? Where do you see yourself playing and what are your dream events/venues to play?
Continuing what we love, being able to make our lives through music. Dream events would probably be some of the big Festivals like Download. Dream Venue would be Wembley Stadium.
What is the most challenging thing about being in an emerging rock band? Any advice for musicians who dream to be in a rock band?
The most challenging thing so far has been people not taking us seriously, not listening to our music or watching our videos and just shutting the door in our face. The advice I’d like to give to bands just starting out, is no question is stupid and if you don’t ask you won’t get. Some doors may close, some people may be mean but there are others doors and nicer people and eventually the more successful you become the doors you tried to open to start with will be begging you to come through.
Do you have any exciting plans or gigs coming up you’d like us to shout about?
We have quite a few events coming up and some big news to announce soon. At the moment the only ones I can tell you about are the 6th of July at the Star Guildford with bands such as Shard and Aetheza. Also the 15th of July at the White Hart in Basingstoke.

OVER-SCORE are a UK based, fist-pumping, head-banging, relentless Hard-Rock band with a taste for good beer and loud music! The word ‘compromise’ doesn’t exist to these four lads with no agenda but pounding riffs, an energetic performance, megaphone solos, and not a promoter in the world who can come between them, their audience, and their show the way they want it to be.
I caught up with Joe Boult (lead vocalist/guitarist) to ask him a few questions on OVER-SCORE’s career and goals for the future.
Hi Joe!
Alright, ‘Lisha?
I’d like to start by asking you what is OVER-SCORE about? What is your sound and where do you get your inspiration from?
Well for us it’s all about having a good time. You’ve seen our stage-show with the megaphone, the wireless kit, running around like a idiot, bullying our bass-player Chris. We’re doing this to entertain ourselves just as much, believe me! Our sound, I’m not sure how to best put it. I mean we have songs that are miles apart! Go listen to Mind’s Eye, which is track 1 on the Warrior EP, right? Then go listen to Get Used to That on track 4. In terms of inspiration, we’re all rockers at heart. I heard ‘Appetite for Destruction’ from Guns N’ Roses and I wanted to be Axl, I wanted to be Slash, but there’s also a love of… weirder music in the band. There’s some heavy Frank Zappa influence, Steve Vai, Dream Theater, it all pops up when we’re writing.
Who are your members and what instruments do you all play in the band?
So I’m Joe, and I’m the most important guy in the band -Laughs- I’m the lead vocalist and guitarist, on the drums we have Mr. Oliver Demko, and on bass is Chris. Just Chris. No-one knows his last name, not even Chris.
We’re actually between lead guitarists now - we’re holding auditions next month so anyone near Guildford should get in touch at [email protected], so I’m basically the lead guitarist for the time being as well. It’s a hard life, this music thingy, intit?
What gave you the inspiration to start up as a heavy rock band? How does the story of OVER-SCORE being born go?
I’ve been in bands since I was 13, and they came and went as bands do. Then I basically rediscovered hard rock, bands like Rose Tattoo, Airbourne, Rhino Bucket. The live shows, the energy, the drinking, nothing’s resonated with me like that, since I discovered Iron Maiden. So when I moved to Guildford to start the Academy of Contemporary Music, the first thing I did was start a band.
My buddy Gabriel Demko joined on lead guitar, and that’s how we met Oli; he’s Gabriel’s brother and we needed a drummer. Then we met Matt Ball who stayed with us on bass for a long time, and we started gigging and did recorded our debut EP. Then Matt and Gabriel left due to time-commitment issues, and we found and auditioned Chris to play bass for us. We also had a brief stint with our mate Ollie Miles on lead guitar, who also left from commitment issues.I’m beginning to think we smell funny.
If you could bring back one of your music inspirations, who would it be and why?
Lemmy without a doubt. I’d be tempted to bring back Hendrix, but Lemmy embodied Rock N’ Roll. He wore what he wanted, he drank what he wanted, he even smoked what he wanted. He did his own thing, and there’s nothing more Rock N’ Roll than that. I remember when I bought Ace of Spades, just that bassline in the intro, you know what you’re getting yourself into. By the time you get to ‘Live to Win’, at 12 years old? You’re headbanging, jumping around the room, you’re off your face on fizzy pop, it was a good time.
I’m not one for seeking approval from other people, but nothing would mean more than knowing what Lemmy would have thought of Over-Score.
What are you plans and goals for the future? Where do you see yourself playing and what are your dream events/venues to play?
Well at the minute, it’s downtime while we’re hunting for a new lead guitarist, but we’re trying to do the rounds for now, just reaching as many venues and people all around the UK as we can. Chris is from Czech Republic and he’s trying to get us some shows there, and we’re debating some cheap flights over to Europe and trying to gain some international recognition, so just hammer through until we get people’s attention, really!
Dream events to play, erm. Download fest is right up there, can’t miss a chance to play such holy grounds as the infamous Castle Donington. We’d love to play Sonisphere if it ever came back. Wembley’s a big one for me, I’ve seen Alice Cooper there, KISS, Megadeth, Motley Crue. But, y’know, that’s ages down the pipeline, we’re just happy to get in front of even just 10 people, because we make damn sure those 10 people have a good time. We’re entertainers, after all.
What has been challenging about setting up a band and starting from the very beginning of your career? What advice could you give to someone who are looking to kickstart their band dream?
Like I say, we seem to be plagued by line-up changes. But the biggest challenge was getting that first gig, getting people to notice you. You want to have your own sound, you need that first gig to showcase and start building an audience and no-one seems to want to give you one, it’s frustrating as ought. Best advice I can give is perseverance. If you’re looking to get noticed over-night and catapult into stardom, wrong industry. It’s going to be long hours, it’s going to be hard to get people to notice you, you need to learn to market yourself effectively. Learn the basics on how the music industry works, there’s a lot more people looking to shaft you then you might think. “It won’t happen to me” doesn’t apply, it happens to everyone.
And for the love of God, don’t pay to play, that stuff needs to leave the industry.
But most importantly, enjoy yourself! Live the dream, and good luck to anyone whose heart goes into it every night.
Do you have any events or exciting plans coming up you’d like us to share for you?
Well we’re back at writing, we’re working on our first full-length album, so I’m expecting a fair few shouting matches. We’re preparing to film a music video for Mind’s Eye, and of course hunting for a new lead guitarist, and we’re working hard on a marketing plan for the album. We’re working with our mates in Aetheza, who we’re getting gigs for and from, and our management, Lioness, is currently weighing up the cost of a UK tour, and I’m wondering how big an overdraft I can get. It’s all good times. An album review from you guys would be nice though!
Thank you so much for joining me today! It’s been amazing getting to know OVER-SCORE!
Cheers for having me on, I love having the opportunity to talk about myself!

Female led heavy alternative rock band Salvation Jayne from Kent, released their EP ‘Moves That Make The Record Skip’ in June. On this EP, there was one track that really stood out for me. I am completely addicted to ‘Burn It Down’! This band is seriously worth checking out!
I saw these guys headlining at The New Cross Inn and I was blown away. The line up was awesome, but these guys truly made the night. Performance and energy levels were extremely high, I had to purchase one of their EPs! Hearing ‘Burn It Down’ live was even more amazing, Chess can really hit those high notes, and being a singer myself, this was a complete eargasm!
The song starts off with a heavy guitar riff and some crashy call and response drums.
During the verses, the mix allows room for the soft style vocals to shine through to add some intense emotion, almost like whispering the lyrics. The repetitive guitar riff throughout this section really adds some texture and supports the vocals really nicely.
The chorus is extremely powerful, with some experimental chords and amazing belting vocals, with some natural growl. It gave me shivers just hearing those top notes!
There is an ambient guitar solo, which I felt was really subtle and was an interesting approach by bringing down the energy of the song then kick starting straight back in for the bridge. I felt like I wanted the bridge to come in straight away with the crash style drums to keep up the energy and strength within the song, but the guitar solo does also work really well and gives the song a slight breather.
After the bridge, we are introduced to a double chorus, with some instrumental breaks with some short a cappella on the lyric ‘burn it down’ which enhanced the tone of these impressive vocals.
I am obsessed with this track right now! Please keep up the good work Salvation Jayne! Can’t wait to hear more from you!

I spoke to the members of DITR to get an insight into what they’re up to!
I’d like to start by asking you what is DITR about? What is your sound and where do you get your inspiration from?
We are about addressing the issues which  aren't often talked about in mainstream news and media, whilst combining genres within modern rock music into a fresh new sound. Our sound is a collection of the technicality of hard rock amalgamated with the raw emotion of alternative rock; whilst also laying the foundations for elements of progressive rock. Our inspirations lie with our favourite bands like Tool, Iron Maiden, System of a down and Muse; and also the current system of society
Who are your members and what instruments do you all play in the band?
Jamie Donkin - Lead Vocals/Guitar
Peter Bristow - Guitar
Charlie Strong - Bass
Sabrina Gaertner - Drums
What gave you the inspiration to start up as a rock band? How does the story of DITR being born go?
Whilst me (Jamie) and Peter were playing guitar we came to the realisation of attempting to be like one of our favourite bands, as well as being inspired by the vast talent at acm within our first weeks here in Guildford. We then trialled Charlie on bass and immediately made a great connection musically and personally. Then after months of trying to find the right drummer Charlie recommended Sabrina - or "Beanie" as we call her amongst the band - and it was another instant connection made. From there we constantly practiced and wrote material for our first EP "Dosage" and are already setting sights for our next project.
If you could bring back one of your music inspirations, who would it be and why?
For Jamie, he would love to bring back Johnny Cash. His sincerity and songwriting are what drove Jamie when he first started writing songs, focusing on quality rather than quantity.
For Peter it would be David Bowie, not for his songs, but for the meaning behind the lyrics and his outward thinking within his own music.
For Charlie, he would bring back Jimi Hendrix for his amazing musicianship and the fact that his life ended so soon into his career. He would have loved to hear what great music he could have potentially created.
And Sabrina would bring back John Bonham. She loved his passion and skill set within music and his impact on how drummers took to playing after his time.
What are you plans and goals for the future? Where do you see yourself playing and what are your dream events/venues to play?
One main goal of ours is to inspire a generation of people to take on music as a skill and potential career choice - sharing our love for it. We also want to inspire them in a way so they do not have to settle for what is given to them but to do and be daring in whatever they wish to do. Another plan of ours is more current, which is to keep making, releasing and performing our music - our sole passion.
In the near future, we see ourselves playing around the Surrey county and branching to London too, as we do not want to stick to just Guildford and nearby cities. But a larger goal for us would be to play nationwide but not necessarily in big venues, but regularly enough to be a household name.
Dream venues include: Redrocks, Download festival, Glastonbury festival, Reading and Leeds festival, The Royal Albert Hall and Wembley
What has been challenging about setting up a band and starting from the very beginning of your career? What advice could you give to someone who are looking to kickstart their band dream?
The first hurdle we overcome was what our sound was and what felt right to play, as opposed to a lot of mainstream bands who we personally feel sell themselves out to commercial status as opposed to the music. Then the next obstacle was finding a stable drummer. We ended up trialling 3 drummers who did not stick due to their conflicting schedules and other commitments. We then finally secured Sabrina and it was like the band went into overdrive on writing and practicing after clicking immediately.
Advice we would give to a band starting out would be it not settle with people you do not click with nor a song or idea you are not happy with just because of majority vote. It is ok to have conflicting ideas and difference of opinions, just do not let the music suffer as a result. Definitely do not let personal issues like relationships, drug or alcohol abuse etc. get in the way of the creativity. A band is about music, let your issues be your subject or talk with your band members as if they were your brothers or sisters, because that is what being a band is about. And one last note, if you feel you are losing hope with the band, it may just be bad timing or a bad situation that is stopping the band from growing: always give it your all before you feel it really isn't working out. And another last note: always show up on time and be prepared.
Do you have any events or exciting plans coming up you’d like us to share for you?
We're excited to announce our debut EP "Dosage" is in the works and is being recorded and produced at the moment for a future release. We have a potential performance slot at ACM's summer live and whilst our first EP is being recorded, we are already working on our first album: Chapters. This will be a mammoth undertaking after doing just one EP, but it is a concept album we are passionate writing and performing about. The concept is that of man's evolution throughout history and our potential as a race to evolve into something more than just humans. Within this, we will also be challenging the issues of society, warfare and technology, amongst other things.
Thank you so much for joining me today! It’s been amazing getting to know DITR!

The Alleycat - Part 1 - The Great Wen
I had the opportunity to visit The Alleycat on Denmark Street to see three awesome rock bands. The entrance to the venue was really cool, with steps that went underneath a music shop to reveal an underground club. Inside the venue, it was a very small and intimate space, decorated with themed tables, chandeliers and vinyls hung up on the walls, with a wooden shack type of bar which followed a Hollywood style, making the venue homely and welcoming. The music was at the perfect volume for the size of the venue, with a large crowd for all the bands both seated and standing up. The mood lighting was set during the whole night to a red and green laser with a smoke machine which gave of a real rocky atmosphere.
The stage was quite small but it made the bands look closer to each other and there was a large logo on the back wall for the Alleycat bar which was perfect for branding. I really enjoyed watching the bands at this venue and it was nice to meet people all passionate of the same music.
I am going to start talking about our first band The Great Wen. Big riffs, electrifying solos and raw, gritty lyrics make up the sounds of The Great Wen. Their music is built from a fusion of musical styles. With untameable Blues influence at their core and a nonconforming approach to writing originals the band have created a unique and expressive sound.
These guys had a rock/blues sound with nice grooves and stripped back instrumentation. It began with some smooth lead guitar, with some clean solos and decoration. With the stripped back sound, this really made the guitar sound pop out and become the main focus for most of the set, and really suited the chilled bluesy vibe they were going for.
Looking into the vocal sound, there was a lot of metal influence, with some natural screams and a raw growl. The high falsetto screams were very impressive and really added some emotion to the songs. The lead singer showed some seductive and intimate performance, with a closed eye technique and a Kurt Cobain influence regarding vocal tone and lyrics. I would have liked to see more frontwards performance from the lead singer as I feel it would have engaged with the audience more, however the way he was engaging with the rest of the band, especially the guitarist during his solos showed a real closeness between them as friends.
The drummer’s technique when playing the quieter sections was perfect and I felt he was the main focus during these parts. Despite being the quietest instrument, his hi hat sound really pierced through the rest of the band sound. Great performance from him throughout the entire set, you know you’ve done a good job when you’re soaked through with sweat! Well done, man!
There was a real tightness between the whole band during some stab sections, which added a lot of suspense to the performance, and a half time breakdown with a metal style which made me want to seriously head bang! Think Highly Suspect ‘Mom’. That’s what they sounded like. And it was awesome.
These guys were an amazing opening act, and really got the crowd going ready for the rest of the night!

Achieving runner up position for songwriting in the 2014 Song of the Year competition and recognition as a Semi-Finalist in the 2014 UK songwriting contest has inspired Bisola to continue writing and recording catchy yet thought provoking music.
Her single ‘Million Miles’ released in January 2017 achieved the no.1 spot on a US radio chart show shortly after it’s release. Her new EP 'Lessons My Mama Taught Me' is out now and is available on all digital music platforms
Hi Bisola!
I’d like to ask you what is your sound and where do you get your inspiration from?
My sound is a mix of Soul and Pop with a touch of R&B. My 'thing' is about doing uplifting and thought provoking music. I listen to just about any genre of music pop, EDM, Soul, gospel which is great cos I get ideas for new songs or get inspired to mix things up - the last thing I want is to sound the same all the time.
What instruments do you play for your act? Do you write your own songs?
I play guitar but usually I get someone else to play for me when performing so I can focus on my singing and get the crowd engaged.
I write my own songs and draw inspiration from people's lives, my life, stuff happening in the world.....basically if it means something to me or I think it'll mean something to someone else, then it's worth writing about.
What gave you the inspiration to start up as a solo musician?
Good question, I think it's been a mix of different things over the years. I've always loved singing and everything about music since I can remember. I think once I started getting good feedback about the songs I was writing that gave me the confidence to start pursuing this professionally. What also gave me a big push was understanding the purpose for doing this in the first place - there's so much people go through in life and sometimes it just helps knowing someone else has gone through the same or can articulate how you feel and point you to something greater. That for me is why I write and sing these songs
If you could bring back one of your music inspirations, who would it be and why?
It'd be Whitney Houston! Amazing singer and just so naturally gifted. Of course it was sad it all ended tragically for her but when she was in her prime I loved attempting to sing like her. She made hitting those high notes sound so effortless. She was truly special.
What are you plans and goals for the future? Where do you see yourself playing and what are your dream events/venues to play?
I'd love to get new more music out there....and get a break out hit in the mainstream charts (one day soon!) Also it'd be great to get a full album out. I've just released my second EP which is great and was a lot of investment of time and resources - it really makes you appreciate the hard work and time it takes to do a full album.
I'd love to play some really big venues - maybe the 02 or Wembley Arena for starters ha, ha.
Also it'd be awesome to perform at festivals. It just seems like such an awesome experience getting to perform at something like that.
What advice could you give to someone who are looking to kickstart their dream as a solo artist?
I think first thing is to decide if you really have a passion for this and if you're really willing to put in the hard work and sacrifice. Yes talent is important, but there are so many talented people that never really made it. Second thing is identify your strengths or try doing a number of things to help you identify your strengths e.g. do Open Mics, upload your stuff on You Tube these are easy things you can do that won't cost you anything but your time. The feedback or the confidence you get from using these platforms can really help propel you forward cos people will tell you they like your song, your voice, lyrics, whatever and then you'll know what you need to build on or need to improve. Either way keep finding opportunities to do your music and over time you'll get better, build a following and even get that hit everyone dreams of having!
Do you have any events or exciting plans coming up you’d like us to share for you?
Yeah I'm doing a few gigs to promote my recently released EP titled 'Lessons My Mama Taught Me'. I'm at Proud in Camden on 19th June, then at Kensington Park Hotel on the 16th. I've also got some radio interviews lined up and towards the end of summer I should be doing some performances in the States should be fun - if all goes to plan!
Thank you so much for joining me today! It’s been amazing getting to know Bisola!

The Monarch in Camden - Part 2 - The Shantics
From the moment I saw these guys, I thought, long hair, tshirts and blazers? Yeah they’re in a band! Little did I know this was our second act of the night, The Shantics!
They walked on stage and introduced themselves and first thing I notice is...the drummer has short hair! However, during their performance, as he was placed central to the others, this actually worked rather well.
This band had groove throughout their whole set, with an indie rock style of sound, the audience were loving The Shantics. So much energy on stage and that hair was ‘casually’ flung about effortlessly!
Strong vocals from lead and backing vocalists, their voices sounded perfect together and filled out a great range that sat perfectly with the main melody of the songs.
The large crowd was dancing and cheering along to the great music of The Shantics, they engaged well with the audience, talking in between songs and telling jokes! Pun rating. 8/10.
Their facial expressions were true and enthusiastic, especially from the lead vocalist, you could clearly see that they were loving being on stage and putting on a real show.
Great enthusiasm and energy from the drummer, with tight playing and crash hits really defining the main melody, really making the lead vocals stand out and showed off more of the guitar tone and rhythm.
The one highlight of the night for me personally, was through their song Mind Pop, this was definitely my favourite song! So alive with some awesome chords, great beats with a Nothing But Thieves/Catfish and the Bottlemen influence. I’m sure the audience would agree with me, but I couldn’t stop dancing along!
They ended their set with a dramatic and memorable finish. Well done guys, keep up the good work!
