Ingrid Godon
Tumblr media
In this post, Ingrid talks about her working process, and she shares stunning illustrations from some of her books, including the ‘Ik Wou’ trilogy with words by Toon Tellegen, and ‘Dantesken’ which features over 600 pages of autonomous drawings. She also shares wonderful fabric sculptures, ceramics and textile art.

Ingrid: When I was a child, I was always watching. From a distance. Who did what, and how they did it. I drew. Not what I saw, although I did store the images in my mind. One day, they would come out. Drawn. School didn’t work out, but I kept drawing. I met Rik Van den Brande, an illustrator and teacher, at the academy. He took me under his wing and I kept drawing. I soon got assignments as an illustrator. I was working! Drawing became my work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Educational publishers gave me assignments. This led to the creation of ‘Nellie & Cezar’ in 1995, which, via an educational detour, turned into a short book which remains popular with toddlers and teachers to this day. It became a success in many versions, animated movies were made from it, and Nellie & Cezar became great puppets. And I kept drawing, especially for children.
I made ‘Waiting for Sailor’ in 2000, and took the initiative for a story of my own for the first time. My dear colleague André Sollie wrote my story and I drew. That was the start of an international story. The book won many awards, and was published in English, French, German and Korean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Foreign publishers were now asking me to make books for them as well. Often the German, French, Swedish or English books were never even published in Dutch. I received more awards, and in 2020 I was longlisted for the ALMA for the fourth time.

Photography has played an important role in my life for a long time now. A series of photographs could grab me, and I could go to work with it. For instance, I became enthralled by the work of Belgian photographer Norbert Ghisoland. He made portraits of ordinary people in his studio in the Borinage, an industrial region, each of them dressed to the nines, but there is a great deal of misery behind the well-groomed facade. This became the foundation for my work which was mainly aimed at adults: IK WOU (I Wish). Toon Tellegen wrote the text for the first series of portraits for this book; 33 portraits of serious people. Dressed to the nines. I drew them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IK WOU became a trilogy, with IK DENK (I Think) and IK MOET (I Must) as parts two and three.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trilogy has been successful, not just in Belgium and The Netherlands, but also in the French and German-language regions. It also led to beautiful exhibitions, with a large exhibit in Frankfurt being the tentative highlight. In Cologne, I displayed the works from IK WOU in combination with the children’s portraits of August Sander in 2016. I WISH, the American edition of IK WOU, was published in the spring of 2020. At the end of 2020, its portraits were supposed to be in an exhibition at C.G. Boerner in New York City, but this was cancelled due to Covid-19.
2018 was an important year for me. For the first time, I made a book without a story. Unless the viewer finds a story in there, of course. DANTESKEN: over 600 pages of drawings, an explosion of what goes on in my head. For me as an artist – because that is how I finally started seeing myself as well – this was an important step. More than ever before, I realised the importance of entrusting the paper (or canvas or wood or printing press or clay or fabric) with lines and shapes. I can do no different. I keep drawing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recently, I started making little sculptures out of fabric: three-dimensional drawings, like puppets stepping out of my drawings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve also been working more and more with ceramics and textile art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My work is becoming increasingly autonomous, and diverges more and more from merely illustrating. Drawings live lives of their own, become works in their own right, sometimes with a story, sometimes starting from a story, sometimes from nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have no style; I have the Ingrid Godon style. I’m continuously looking for the right way to tell my story, rustling around in my box of materials, alternating between pencil and paint, covering it with a paint roller, cutting into wood and printing it, scribbling on photographs. I keep searching.
I mainly draw people who – like me – look in all directions and are curious about what goes on in front of them. They sometimes look away, but they are always very present. I have at times – on request – drawn landscapes. But even then, I could not resist placing a person in the landscape here and there. Looking, like I do. I search continuously, take different paths, and keep looking. Full of wonder.
In the meantime, I keep working on commissions, I take the initiative to make books, I keep searching for the right pen line or brush stroke, the images keep flowing from my head, and I keep drawing. I draw and I draw.

‘Pairs portraits with poetry to articulate wrenching individualism, yearning, humour, desires, and pathos. This probing psychological journey makes for an exciting exploration in empathy.’ —Kirkus Reviews

Eurovision 1972 my top 18
Tumblr media
Hello!!! And welcome to another episode of this series about the ESC, and we go until March 25th 1972 where the 17th edition was held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom after Monaco declined to host the contest because they didn’t had a suitable venue. 18 countries took part, no one debuted and no one withdrew and the voting system was kept. The winner of this edition was Luxembourg with Vicky Leandros and the song Après toi, making this their 3rd ever win. And now let’s review all the songs.
1st Place: LUXEMBOURG/Vicky Leandros-Après toi (Real Placing: 1st-128 points)
This is such a wonderful song!!! My heart belongs a lot to this one, the music is amazing, and Vicky’s voice is perfect, such a worthy winner and what a song!! I LOVE YOU VICKY.
2nd Place: THE NETHERLANDS/Sandra & Andres-Als het om de liefde gaat (Real Placing: 4th-106 points)
Their clothes, so shocking green. This song is very uplifting and bouncy that makes me dance with it, Sandra’s voice is amazing and also Andres is a good singer, I love this one so much.
3rd Place: GERMANY/Mary Roos-Nur die Liebe läßt uns lieben (Real Placing: 3rd-107 points)
This is so cute!!! What a voice does she has and the music makes me so happy, the rhythm here is amazing and the song overall is pretty nice, what an entry.
4th Place: PORTUGAL/Carlos Mendes-A festa da vida (Real Placing: 7th-90 points)
Another great song from Portugal, the music is excellent and his voice is amazing, my Portugal was very robbed many times, such a superb song this one.
5th Place: AUSTRIA/Milestones-Falter im Wind (Real Placing: 5th-100 points)
Also this one is amazing, such a groovy entry and this is something I would hear in 1972, the music here is very nice and their voices are very good. Such a pleasant song this one.
6th Place: YUGOSLAVIA/Tereza Kesovija-Muzika i ti (Real Placing: 9th-87 points)
THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING SONG!!! I LOVE IT, the music, the lyrics (I saw the translation and they are lovely and her redeemed herself after her song in 1966, her voice is stunning and this is one of my favorite Yugoslav entries ever.
7th Place: UNITED KINGDOM/The New Seekers-Beg, steal or borrow (Real Placing: 2nd-114 points)
This one is very early 70′s and I love it, has nice music, the lyrics are good and they are a nice group, such a nice runner-up and if this won, I would’ve been happy with it.
8th Place: IRELAND/Sandie Jones-Ceol an Ghrá (Real Placing: 15th-72 points)
A SONG IN IRISH!! I LOVE THIS ONE. So cute, lovely and what a voice does she has, the Irish language is one of my favorites ever and this song has a soft spot in my heart. Please Ireland, send more songs in Irish in the future and not only in JESC.
9th Place: FRANCE/Betty Mars-Comé-comédie (Real Placing: 11th-81 points)
An Edith Piaff kind of song, Betty’s voice is very chansony and the song is very French, this is something I would hear while walking in Paris, a nice entry and quite underrated IMO.
10th Place: SPAIN/Jaime Morey-Amanece (Real Place: 10th-83 points)
This song has an amazing vibe to it, lovely music and the lyrics are good, his voice is okay and may have been forgettable in a quite good field. A nice entry from Spain here.
11th Place: FINLAND/Päivi Paunu & Kim Floor-Muistathan (Real Placing: 12th-78 points)
This one is a good song, their voices are so good and the music is catchy, the Finnish language here is lovely and the la la la at the end is enjoyable, what a nice entry.
12th Place: SWEDEN/The Family Four-Härliga sommardag (Real Placing: 13th-75 points)
Their song in 1971 was miles better than this one, the music is lovely and they are amazing, but the song is quite flat and quite boring, but enjoyable anyway.
13th Place: MALTA/Helen & Joseph-L’imhabba (Real Placing: 18th-48 points/last)
This entry makes me feel happy and the music here is very good, their voices sound good and their clothes are lovely, another nice entry from Malta and the last time to date they would sing on Maltese.
14th Place: ITALY/Nicola di Bari-I giorni dell’arcobaleno (Real Placing: 6th-92 points)
I must admit I love his voice, but the song doesn’t say anything to me, also fails to impress me at some point, I expected more from this one.
15th Place: SWITZERLAND/Véronique Müller-C’est la chanson de mon amour (Real Placing: 8th-88 points)
The music here is very good, but her voice isn’t my cup of tea and after many listenings I found it quite boring at some point. An average entry IMO.
16th Place: NORWAY/Grethe Kausland & Benny Borg-Småting (Real Placing: 14th-73 points)
Another cute song from Norway, but unfortunately this is quite boring and the verses make me feel sleepy, and the chorus is great. Also her voice is wonderful.
17th Place: MONACO/Anne-Marie Godart & Peter McLane-Come on s’aime (Real Placing: 16th-65 points)
Another duet with a dull song, the verses are okay but the chorus is awful, I don’t like this one as well.
18th Place: BELGIUM/Serge & Christine Ghisoland-À la folie ou pas du tout (Real Placing: 17th-55 points)
This makes me feel sleepy and bored throughout the song, their voices are good but nope, the song isn’t good.
