VegasPete and Stockholm Syndrome

Okay so….just obsessively scrolling through the KP and VP tags every Saturday I end up seeing everybody and their brothers takes. (And if not on Saturday then I will the entire rest of the week because I check that tag like checking the morning newspaper 🤪)

And seeing “Stockholm Syndrome” for the tv series (esp cause I read the VP side story lmaooo rip) really amused me for multiple reasons,,,

Lemme just start right from the bat and say that it is perfectly valid to be confused on Pete’s actions, especially as he’s been held hostage.

“Why didn’t he leave?? He should of left???”

Obv the thought process here is: Pete hates Vegas —> seen what Vegas goes through and empathized —> worries about his captor —> doesn’t leave when presented the option —> therefore he has Stockholm syndrome.

Mhm mhmmm I can understand how you could come to that conclusion. However, I firmly disagree. I saw a post that said they wanted to label Vegas and Pete’s relationship Stockholm sooooo badly but knew that wasn’t entirely it and that there was something more complex but they couldn’t understand what.

Haha let me explain to you just what that “what” is.

Having read the book, I have a bit more of a foundation when it comes to comparison, making it easier to see and understand the intent behind the way the Director and writers have adapted the novel into the series. I’m in the middle of writing an essay about these changes and why the tv show is hands down (no competition) a million times better (written) than the book.

In the book, yeah I would say Pete and Vegas have a Stockholm relationship. Hmmm maybe not even then? Because if we’re defining Stockholm as a coping mechanism of empathizing with the captor during times of stress and harm in order to help make it through a traumatic situation; then I say: So~so. See, Pete’s mindset in the book is completely different than it is in the series.

In the book there was no understanding for why Vegas is a fked up lil maniac. “Parental abuse? Tough, but people out there have had it tougher 😶✌️.”

That was Pete’s mindset.

It was really “well that sucks for you but I don’t care — cuz you’re a henious villain” thought process.

In fact Pete only started being nice to Vegas/doing what he said so that Vegas would get bored and either kill him or let him go. That’s it. That’s like 92% of their novel relationship. Pete being fake asf so Vegas would find him boring.

Even prior to being captor and captive Book!Pete could not and did not see behind Vegas’ mask. In his own thoughts during his time captive, he thinks about how he had always perceived Vegas as y’know “just some guy” even with Kinn/Tankhun’s warnings — these warnings being the only reason he knew to be wary of Vegas in the first place.

Chef’s kiss 💋 👌👌 to the show for the way they made specific and subtle changes from the source material that would greatly change the entire dynamic of all the characters and their relationships with each other. (But that’s an essay for a whole other day 👀)

Now, how did the show change Vegas and Pete’s relationship into something entirely new, even more fked up than it was in the narrative, and yet somehow a million times better?

Simple.

(1) Pete’s observation skills and ability to see through Vegas mask from the very beginning. AND his “there’s no heroes or villains” mindset

(2) Pete *choosing* to sneak in with the knowledge and preparation of his torture and death should things go wrong.

(3) The shared experience of both having abusive fathers.

(Pete being the more mature and introspective and aware one between the two, aKa giving Vegas some solid therapy and enlightenment.)

(4) The clippers that have been left in the room with Pete. These writers have been intentional to the *T* — if all these damn essays and meta aren’t proof enough to yall of that then 🤷 idk what else I could give to prove that to you.

(Listennnnnnn,,, you don’t have all these intentional choices for every little thing and then accidentally leave bolt cutters on set of an important scene. Would make no damn sense.)

(Vegas didn’t have a pet in the novel…not one I remember at least.)

(7) Vegas not initiating the Kiss

Okay. All of the above 1–7 are just a few of the changes made that have major importance for both Pete and Vegas’ relationship.

With Pete being able to see under Vegas’ mask we know that Vegas’ fake masks don’t fool him. There’s something about Vegas that Pete can see through. So when Pete chooses to sneak into the minor family compound — vocally stating before he does it that he knows the consequences— this informs the audience that he’s prepared for them. For capture, torture, death. Which is why when Vegas comes in to torture him and Pete knows he’s foiled his plans and will most likely die? Dude has nothing to lose, so he’ll be damned if he’ll let Vegas see his fear.

Not only does this give Pete a lot more agency. (In the book it was just, wrong place, wrong time); but — as fked up as it is — it also lets the audience feel less bad when he does inevitably get caught / tortured.

It’s not that he asked for it, but at least he knew what was going to happen. An unsuspecting victim is a lot more pitiable than a suspecting victim. Especially if it’s a consequence of a choice he voluntarily made — compared to being forced to investigate via ‘boss’s order.’ So already the writers are setting us up to not hate Vegas as much as we would if Pete truly stumbled into the situation on accident.

Now one of the most important differences — that shared trauma of having an abusive father, and using it to relate to Vegas. Unlike Book!Pete, our Pete recognizes Vegas’ situation. He’s been in the same place — while having the actual affection of his grandmother to fall back on (which Vegas obv didn’t have); therefore he also understands why Vegas tortures him the way that he does — he understands that Vegas is only feeling pathetic and lousy and is taking that out on him.

But in that tender and melancholic moment when Vegas decides to be vulnerable after patching up Pete’s wounds, Pete talks to Vegas with an understanding only someone in his position (or a therapist lol) would have. Even then, objectively knowing something is different than having experienced it yourself. And it’s the fact that Pete’s *also* experienced that sh*t that lends credibility to what he’s saying — at least in Vegas’ eyes.

This is why Pete knows there’s no good or evil, hero or villain, black or white binary in this world.

Because when you get down to it: we truly are shaped by our environments and the things we experience as we grow (obv not ignoring genetics but that’s not the point). And it’s this reflective and mature/observational outlook that helps him empathize with Vegas.

More than empathize — it’s *this* outlook that helps Pete not hold lasting grudges or hate for past hurts.

It’s always easier to forgive someone when you know where they’re coming from.

And Pete never really took it personally (for the most part) considering Vegas is on an opposing side. When an enemy gets captured on the enemy’s base of course they’d get either killed or tortured, esp for information.

That’s not something special to Vegas.

Vegas refusing to kill Pete tho? Lol. That’s enough for a dislike to sour. But I don’t think it sours all that much once we put in the consideration of Pete’s observations recognizing what Vegas is — a victim of an abusive home/situation.

(Not that it excuses him, but nobody’s trying to do that here LOL.)

Now getting down to the nitty gritty.

The hedgehog, the key, and why Pete isn’t a victim of Stockholm syndrome.

First, I think the hedgehog 🦔 is very important because it gives the audience (and Pete) another reason to empathize with Vegas — humans might not mean sh*t to him, but he loves and takes care of his pets.

He loves something. He cares about something. This humanizes him.

And a small and fragile pet can often humanize a character more than a human. A real sicko kills animals. But Vegas’ care for his hedgehog 🦔 shows that he isn’t that. He’s human too—albeit a really fked up one, but human nonetheless. He’s capable of love too, but perhaps humans have hurt him so much that he knows only an animal would be something he can trust.

This kind of trust and love he can only find in animals is also a very isolating existence. It highlights just how trapped Vegas is — the Hedgehog is literally a mirror of himself and his situation.

Yes he cares for Macau — but it’s “easier” to care for a human than an animal. Easier to empathize with a human. So while yeah, his care for his brother, while subtle in the show, is important, it isn’t as important to the audience as his love for his hedgehog. Especially when it comes to convincing an audience to forgive a character’s past villainy and long list of crimes.

But here’s what’s really important — the key.

Vegas leaving the key there (intentional or not; but imo, I think it’s obv intentional. Dude is way too meticulous for that to be accidental), gives Pete the agency to either escape or stay.

This, again, helps the audience be more okay with the idea of the two of them ending up in a relationship. It’s one thing if Pete has no choice and goes along with things to survive or cope with trauma — but it’s entirely something else if he’s allowed to leave, but doesn’t.

But Pete’s reason for staying has to be rational in some sense so the suspension of disbelief doesn’t attack the audience going 900 mph on the logic freeway.

So him escaping but seeing Vegas sitting pathetically on the grass, alone in the dark, and holding his dead pet?

The person there isn’t the dude that tortured him. Naw, that part of Vegas — is the child trapped in a cage and left isolated in the dark while anything that had ever brought him light or comfort in his life leaves him. He may be sitting on grass, but for Vegas it could’ve been the equivalent of sitting on broken glass.

It’s such a stark difference too from the versions of Vegas Pete’s used to seeing. Yeah he had that conversation about dads last episode, but even then Vegas wasn’t totally broken and left in despair.

But this Vegas?

This Vegas was someone so broken he couldn’t even cry until Pete touched him to provide comfort.

This Vegas isn’t just a sharp edge that can cut you if you get too close, now’s he’s much too broken for that — and his sharp edge has twisted inward from attacking others to attacking himself.

At this point, Pete’s beyond empathizing with his captor — esp because he isn’t a captive here. He’s not chained anymore. Vegas has no interest holding him captive. Pete at any point after he got out of those chains could have left and Vegas would do nothing to stop him.

Vegas is broken. He’s depressed. And he’s numb because it hurts too much to do anything but sit in his own despair. Pete touching him in comfort might’ve opened the floodgates of that hurt, but that doesn’t mean it changed how Vegas felt. Dude is still in despair when he heads inside.

Anyways this is getting too long so I’ll make a part two — getting more particular in the psychology of why Pete stayed, and why he kissed Vegas.

Closing words to end on:

Pete doesn’t leave because he knows what it’s like, and he’s sees the humanity and pain in Vegas and he cares. He cares because no broken and abused kid should be left isolated in the dark, not even knowing how to cry. He cares because he wants to do for Vegas what his grandmother did for him. What he wished more people would have done when he was in that pain and darkness.

He cares because he looks at Vegas and he sees himself.

Animal Liberation 1987 Industrial / Post-Punk / Synthpop / New Wave

God, this thing is just so fucking on-brand for PETA, folks. Back in 1987, the oft-ridiculed animal rights activist org teamed up with Chicago heavyweight indie label Wax Trax! Records in order to release this benefit comp that saw its royalties go straight into PETA's own coffers. And, as you might expect, like clockwork, it was made up almost entirely of pure, unadulterated cringe 🥴.

Now, to be perfectly clear, I'm definitely not here to evaluate or criticize the merits of animal liberation as an ideology itself in this post, but people have to understand that if you're trying to convert others to your own way of thinking, you're not likely to get through to them with ridiculously over-the-top, preachy propaganda that, in true PETA fashion, will leave your target scratching their head and wondering if all of this is actually just some elaborate ruse or a silly bit. What I think would've been a far more effective tack to take during this era that saw the concept of the benefit comp really flourish would've been to include maybe a song or two about animal rights, and then have the rest of the comp filled out with a bunch of other non-topical goodies.

But obviously, PETA and Wax Trax! didn't end up doing that here. What they chose to do instead was load up this album with almost nothing but ridiculous songs about animal rights and animal liberation; songs that certainly reflect Wax Trax!'s own love of self-aware irony and detachment as a bastion of the intersection between industrial, synthpop and punk and post-punk music, but are not likely to translate into swaying anyone to alter their own consumer habits in order to help lessen the plight of animals themselves. It really feels like just about everyone on here knows that what they're doing is already too on the nose to be taken seriously, and so they're just deciding to act accordingly. Like, if you were to make fun of animal rights activists through the art of musical comedy, you would probably just release this album pretty much as it already is.

The only track on here that would've kept you from using this CD as a coaster is the final one, "Assault & Battery," by Howard Jones, who wasn't even ever a Wax Trax! artist in the first place! This song, like the rest of them, is about animal rights too, but it's a bit more poetic and compelling in how it deals with the subject, rather than the vast majority of this slate, which takes the route of being very lyrically dogmatic and deliberately straight-forward to the point of being exasperatingly eyeroll-inducing 🙄. But with "Assault & Battery," a song that had previously appeared on Jones' 1985 album, Dream Into Action, he pairs his trained piano background with some synthpop and ends up delivering what is, by far, the most captivating and enjoyable song on this album.

So, an exceedingly bad and torturous release that seems par for the course when it comes to PETA's history of overly lame attempts at being provocative rather than actually being thought-provoking, but there is still one very good tune on here; it's just that Wax Trax! had to go outside of their own catalogue in order to obtain it 😆.

Pretty much every character needs to build energy recharge to get their bursts back. Most guides will tell you ER requirements but if you want to figure things out for yourself, here's a few guidelines:

♡ higher burst cost = more ER needed

♡ characters whose skills generate particles over time will need more ER

♡ not every character bursts once per roatation. some only burst every-other rotation which can lower their ER needs

♡ on-field characters require less ER because each particle is worth more energy when caught on-field

♡ for characters whose skills generate particles immediately, using their skill right before their burst will allow the particles to be caught during the animation but after energy has already been consumed. this gives them a "head start" on their next burst while taking up less time on-field

♡ hypercarries like Itto, Cyno, and Xiao who rely on their bursts are often not built with enough ER

♡ when a character gains particles that are not corresponding to their own elemental type, they will gain less energy. However, this does not apply to white particles

♡ a "battery" is a character who supplies additional particles to a character with an expensive burst or high energy requirements

♡ the more characters of a specific element you have, the less ER each of those characters will require

♡ different enemies drop different amounts of energy when defeated

♡ favonius weapons that generate white particles can reduce the ER requirements for your whole team

For characters whose damage is dealt while in a state, the time it takes to complete certain animations can reduce the amount of attack and, therefore damage, that can be dealt. This is why people often preform "dash cancels" the cancel the excess animation after certain attacks.

A pretty common example of this is Hu Tao. The animation after her charged attack is a bit long so cancelling it increases damage by a ton (the time saved actually allows you to preform more charged attack while in the state!).

This is why her C1 is so good. At C0, charged attacking and then dash cancelling uses up a ton of stamina so you aren't able to preform more charged attacks. So C0 Hu Tao players mostly use no cancels or jump cancels

i’d love to see certain characters interact with each other in platonic ways though, like the potential for chaos, if childe and kaeya met for example, would be high (just both of them being fake-polite with veiled insults and threats during a business meeting or during battle would be entertaining enough)

✧ my favourite memories, this is a hard one… probably whenever i achieve something like finally levelling xiao to 90 or maxing out the serenitea pot; also, discovering cool places around the map, like that really high platform in jueyun kast or solving a puzzle/ mystery that i couldn’t before; obviously also playing the story and getting the characters i wished for (not a lot of that happening lately ㅠㅠ)

maybe finally understanding the game and therefore progressing a lot faster than before, like once i finally did some pulls and got some new characters and built them, that’s when the game started becoming really fun, does that count?

i don’t have any specific memories that come to mind though and i can’t say anything about playing with others because i mostly play alone ଘ(*. .)

i guess watching my friend play genshin for the first time and obliterating every enemy in his world was really funny but i’m on weird terms with him right now which taints this memory a bit

✧ i’m really exposing my weird play style today, huh? when i’m doing stuff like dailies, i just throw together whatever characters i feel like using, which is mostly xiao, childe, raiden+ random character (used to be xiangling, bennett or sayu but for quests i can get away with using whoever really; i’ve been using mona, ningguang and beidou more recently)

i do like having childe and xiangling on the same team though because they synergise well and i’m interested in trying childe, kazuha, bennett, xiangling when i finally have kazuha ଘ(੭˃ᴗ˂)੭

xiao and raiden just do crazy damage regardless, so i never really built a team especially for them which shows with raiden because i could really use an electro battery to get her burst faster and reinvest some of her energy recharge into a different stat (i’ll have to look into some team comps that feel right for me again, i have some ideas already but I’ll have to test how good they work for me and my play style)

Overview:

He is more of a Sub DPS or Nuker type of character, but he can also function as a Support depending on what artifact sets you will be going for.

You can go for Main DPS but it is not optimal due to his low atk multiplier, so dont expect him to do big numbers compared to the likes of HuTao, Xiao, and Xiangling.

Ideally, you will not be using his auto attacks. He will be a quickswap off-field damage/support so you raise his Q then E talents. 1/6+/8+ ideally

Artifacts: (Farm this at Adventurer Rank 45)

If you want his meteors to hit hard, go for 2 piece Noblesse Oblige and 2 piece Archaic Petra with an ATK or HP sands, Geo Dmg Goblet, and Crit Dmg/Rate mask depending on what you need to get a 50% crit rate and 100% crit dmg ratio (1:2)

You can also use Skyward Spine if you have it, but you're probably better off with the 4 star Battle Pass (not f2p) polearm weapon called Death Match so you can get crit rate main stat.

If you have neither of those, you can use 4 star weapons like Favonius Lance and Prototype Starglitter. Artifacts matter more than weapons in the grand scheme of things and if you’re new, you’re better off rolling for new units to get two teams for Abyss.

Living in Costa Rica - A First Week of Adventures and Shopping

I’m writing this to update everyone on what is going on with me as I am sure many will be concerned. I hurt myself at work last night by doing something I normally can do without problem. I will have this post tagged and likely under a read more as it may get lengthy.

Nonetheless, he stepped up to the plate and handle the multitasking beautifully while i retreated to the office to call in my ASM. She eventually got back to me and came in to close so I could go home. My mother came and got me and brought me home.

Fast forward to today, I woke up screaming in pain from trying to get up because of stiffness. I called work an told them what was going on. I also retrieved paperwork for work comp from work as my mom had to go down and pick up my truck since I left it in the parking lot. Once that was done, I took a trip to the ER to be looked over to cover my ass. I got xrays taken and waited to hear what to do. I was given medication and slips of paperwork saying I cannot bend, twist, or turn or do any heavy lifting or lifting in general for work if I go back to work. I am to be on very light duty and I will have to see a work comp doc an go from there.

I’ve never gone through this before and to say it was stressful is an understatement. I’m not good with asking for help or dealing with things. Maybe this is a step in the right direction though. You guys today we're going over their new cordless aw. It'S been rumored, it's been around they've been in Europe. Other brands make them. You know they're all in there, but for actually two watt, which is one of the king of miter, saw in my opinion, you got. The DWS 780 grid saw a great saw. Great. All around construction site saw, you know, true, solid, build, you know and a lot of construction guys like that saw, and they want to stick with that brand and a lot of construction guys have 20 volt mm-hmm. So they come out with this 20 boys and seven and a quarter yep seven and a quarter 20 volts on now. First thing, you're saying and a lot of people that I talk to forget that that's right, yeah we're going to the default the wall to vent. It'S not useless. I'M gon na tell you right now. This is gon na handle 90 % of all your cuts. Yes, especially because other way for the two, it's six yeah. Well, that's your framer! You know, if you're doing a frame of your frame of the house that you're doing six by sixes it'll cut a six by six yeah, but you got Turner earning, but that and portability guys even for the regular homeowner. Just to have this, you don't have to unwrap it power I mean weighs like 30-something pounds. What does it weigh? Ah, let me look that up there, for you 31 pounds so, and they really put two handles in the side, so you can carry it like this. I know when I did a flooring job recently at Paul's house and we took the DWS 780. Third, oh my god, that's insane! It was just hard heavy big and we just didn't need that big capacity saw no, that would've been perfect for us yeah. All we were doing was cutting flooring and a little bit of trim. Now I know what other people are saying: oh the battery's not gon na last. You guys you're gon na get up to over a hundred and 275 cuts through three and a quarter pine baseboard. 183 cuts by regular pine 2x4. So you know you could always have a battery on charger. You always have an extra few batteries. Ajanta thing already three cuts out of just two by fours I mean that's, that's good yeah! It'S pretty good! It'S about five volt battery! Um, I don't you know what Eric I don't know won't spoil it down. I want to say it came to the fore. I was a little bit shocked. I wanted to say, came with a four oh reader way. It doesn't just says 20 volt back DC. Look up DC b2 or it's okay, yeah! That'S, alright! We'Re good either way. You know, you're gon na need more than one battery for this most likely, but it does come with a battery and it does come with a charge. Doesn'T it you can get mad as a bear or you can get them with the battery charger? So you can get the kit, which is the m1 or you can get the bear tool? Gotcha. Okay, um! You guys just shoot a form with dEWALT's big bad D. Degree or 780 even has the expirience laser system on it. Um laser system, it's not as good as the XPS. I don't think yeah, which is weird cuz they're, both a light they're both got that nice line right when you pull it down to the wood. You see it I mean yeah. Obviously, though, if you're a bright light, it's I don't care I've, never seen a laser, don't yeah bright way, didn't work right, but the reason I I'm not like saying wow, it's awesome, because the XPS is awesome because you don't have to adjust it. It'S just a shadow where that shadow is, is your exact cut? It'S just. You can't really see it till you're, almost right on the work yeah, you know and, like Eric said, daylight conditions. You know you probably want to use it inside what else we got on this thing. Eric it's got me. It'S got your to everything that you'd see in a regular saw. It'S got the bevel card. It'S got all my me, giggles bevel single yeah, that's true! So it's got that it's got the miter cuts with the details so who tighten this oh come on. I didn't tighten that yeah. You did on tighten it right there. So there you got your Bible, you guys! You got your slide as far as the slide goes. I would say, and what is it look like it's 49 degrees for the bevel? 45? No clothes, hair 11:45. No, it doesn't here's what those it's 45 and the slide feels pretty quality quality. It'S got a nice wide. It feels good, you know, comes with your standard dust collection bag, but you can go ahead and plug it into a dust management system personally these bags suck, but you do need them because if we were cutting right now be shooting all over this TV. So you do need something I think the Bell was like 49 or something now it's 45, it's centered on it. 45. I don't know you're right Eric's right, I'm sorry! It is 49. You are right. Yeah! I cannot see. Oh no show up. I did screw up. Well, you better go to tool guide, um! You guys right here, you got your positive detents. You know fine they're, common ones, twenty-two and a half, and all that yep twenty-two and a half 25 45, and it goes a little more than 449 okay. So I don't know man I I like, because you know what I don't, especially if you're just gon na cut a piece here there too I mean yes, you can do a lot of cuts that go same with the pine and all that. Well, there's a lot of times where it's just sitting over there. We want oh quick cut. You can just pop it right on the back of your truck pop it on the ground sawhorse, but you're gon na move around yeah. But here's what I tell everybody - everybody man, you know small cut - think of when you're using your 73 cartridge. So how many times you've been like man. I wish this thing had a miter. I wish I could make straight cuts or perfect angles with this. Without you know, jigging something up here, it is mm-hmm. You know thank you for the 7 3/4, like you said, 7, 3/4. Yes, seven and a quarter. Oh they say free quarters. Yeah. I just flip flip flip man. We should well. Don'T worry, you guys will edit and redo all that, so we come off as professionals. You know know if you want professionals go elsewhere, but professionals do you love us? Why? Because we're a couple of crazy ass guys stay alive. What'S that woody? What is love? Those guys are come: oh yeah, oh geez overnight that bad now, crazy, guys, uh Barbara Bach right on the front, got your tool here to change your blade. You know, I can't really say enough, you guys do your warranty and I know everybody thinks I'm with the Walt fan. I am a dwarf and I do like to walk and I really think this is a good stop. I love this thing. I did you know what the price suit is 399 euros. It is it 399 or 48. I seen him at Home Depot, I want to say they might even be $ 2.99. What are they at Home Depot check it out? I was checking Amazon well, no Home Depot's got better prices in Amazon for big black yeah, but they got free shipping on let's 390 nice free shipping, but you guys can get it at home people they have stacks of them if you're looking for any minor. This is the one to get. I mean yeah, 12-inch, minors are nice. You can cut a lot more bigger material with a cam but they're heavier they're bulkier I mean yeah. You don't need them that much unless you're building a house or something huge you know. So definitely you guys take a look at this thing. Let us know what you think, I'm gon na go out on a limb. I'M just telling you this is, if I only had to have one miter saw forever it'd be this I'd borrow 12 from Erik or someone else yeah I mean it is a lot of the stuff you cut in our 2x4 or 2x6 is stuff like that. I, for the most part you know, yeah I mean my under starts: take up space dude, okay, especially with stands where it understands yeah. I mean look at storing this thing, yeah compared to just storing your own and that one folds up nicely, but still I mean, even if you have it on your bench, it takes up a lot of room yeah. This is nice because you know what you can do. You can throw this right underneath your bench when you're not using it. It'S not, and you know once it's on top of your bed.
